achary’s Story This is the fourth year we’ve put out this magazine and we think it’s the best one yet. The magazine is our opportunity to share a little bit more about ourselves, so you never feel like you are shopping with a stranger. I’m always very proud of our team, but was recently reminded of this when my youngest niece, Katherine, worked for us this summer. She was guided by smart, strong women and men who care deeply about what they do every day and have a passion for taking care of the people we are grateful to call our customers. The magazine is also a chance for us to highlight trends we’ve noticed, and this year the trend we’ve seen most is dressed down elegance. Whether powering through a workout, picking up the kids from school, or enjoying a glass of wine at the end of the day, we’re inspired by the women coming into our store who effortlessly combine casual style with stunning jewelry. My sister Daphne, the buyer for both of our stores, and my niece, Marisa, exemplify style in the fashion spread, “Around Town Chic.” In “Working Out the Zachary’s Way,” you’ll meet our lead custom designer, Erica; the newest member of the Zachary’s family, Jillian; and my wife and partner in life, Challie. Jewelry has always been important to the women in my life, especially my mother, who imparted a passion for it in me at a young age. Over the years, I’ve watched my sisters delight in the few remaining pieces of my mother’s jewelry collection, and my nieces’ eyes always light up upon receiving their first piece of jewelry from “Uncle Stephen.” I can tell you from experience that jewelry means something different to everyone but it often means the most when it means family. We’re excited to share some of these stories of jewelry being passed down from generation to generation in “Like Mother, Like Daughter.” So, as you flip though the following pages, we hope you feel like you are a part of our family, because you are. You’re the reason we get out of bed every morning and go to work and love what we do. Thank you for being a loyal customer. We hope you enjoy the issue.

n May 10, 2018, Zachary’s Jewelers hosted internationally renowned jewelry designer Marco Bicego at its flagship store in downtown Annapolis. Fans of the designer gathered to celebrate Italian craftsmanship, meet the man behind their favorite designs, take photos and have their one-of-a-kind pieces autographed. The winners of Zachary’s Annual Mother’s Day Contest also attended the event and had a chance to talk with Bicego. He talked about what inspires him, his favorite places in Italy, and even invited attendees to visit his studio in Vicenza. After genuinely enjoying his time with the Annapolitans gathered and realizing the single most successful personal appearance and sales event in the history of the brand, Mr. Bicego has vowed to visit the beautiful city of Annapolis again.

ince the launch of his eponymous jewelry line in 2000, Marco Bicego has redefined the phrase “everyday luxury” with sensuous, extraordinarily beautiful pieces that blend old-world Italian craftsmanship with tradition, passion, and imagination. His uniquely crafted pieces are exceptional enough to make a statement, yet personal enough to wear every day.
Bicego began his training as a gold artisan at his father’s fiftyyear-old atelier in the Veneto region of Italy. His instincts were refined at the workbench and led him to create unique, multitextured items that were both beautiful and unexpected. In the following pages, we profile several mothers and daughters to understand what jewelry means to them—when jewelry means family.
E VA N G E L I N E Jewelry has always held a special place in Evangeline’s heart. And while there are many beautiful pieces in her collection, there’s one that stands out—a ring that was passed down from her grandmother that she plans to give to her daughter, Katherine, one day. She hasn’t parted with the ring yet, but she recently gave Katherine something else—pierced ears. “I imagine her Uncle Stephen will give her her first pair of earrings this Christmas!” She says. JENNIFER Jennifer’s daughter, Emma, may not know what jewelry is yet—she’s only nine months old—but that doesn’t stop her from admiring Jennifer’s earrings. And while Jennifer hasn’t given Emma any jewelry yet, she plans to give her a diamond for her first birthday. Start them early, she says!

In fact, Paige was so inspired by the collection that she started her own jewelry business. And it didn’t take Paige’s daughter, Maddie, long to follow. Today, Maddie crafts and sells her own jewelry, continuing the family tradition.

NICKI Nicki knows a thing or two about keeping jewelry in the family. Her grandmother left each of her girls a “special ring” and she holds on to them for safe keeping. “The rings they picked from Yaya live in my jewelry box until they are old enough to take care of them on their own,” Nicki says. “I ask permission to wear them and the girls really love that.” As for her own jewelry style, Nicki says she tries to accessorize like a 5 year old. It makes life more interesting. Sometimes more is more.
C H E RY L With both daughters in college, Cheryl has had plenty of time to think about what jewelry means to her and her family. “Jewelry has always been very special to me,” says Cheryl. “When I was younger, my grandmother gave me beautiful sapphires that I still have today and I want the same thing for my girls—for my special things to become their special things. Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll be passed down to my granddaughters!” With this in mind, Cheryl has picked out jewelry for each of her daughters—a pair of diamond heart earrings for Alexandra and an emerald ring for Madison. And in this way, Cheryl hopes to give what she holds most dear to those she holds dearest.

Jewelry can be a great activewear accessory from low impact barre class to high intensity triathlon training. A little sweat never hurt anyone’s diamonds. However, depending on the type of exercise and the intensity of the workout, certain types of jewelry may be better suited than others. We put together a few dos and don’ts, so you can break a sweat without sacrificing your style.
Studs are great for almost any activity! Being small and out of the way, they are perfect for just about anything other than kick-boxing. Be sure your backs are snug or better yet, have your favorite studs modified to screwbacks you’re ready for action.
Rings are very stylish, but aren’t always the best if you’re lifting weights, swimming, or rowing. Feel free to wear your rings to spin or to hike a local trail.

ERICA “I started doing yoga in college and it’s been a great outlet for me ever since. It’s nice to know that whatever is going on in my life, I can take a half hour and find some balance. The Nutcracker
at ZACHARY’S
Every year—on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving—for the past 20 years, Zachary’s has invited the Chesapeake Ballet Company to perform “The Nutcracker” in front of its Main Street store for the annual Annapolis tree lighting. Spectators stand around sipping hot cocoa, watching the ballet company perform this holiday favorite. And while it’s a great way to kick off the holiday season, it’s so much more—a venue for these amazing young dancers to display their athleticism and feel empowered. Since its inception, the Chesapeake Ballet Company has provided an outlet for young dancers in the Chesapeake Bay region to perform in professionally-staged productions, producing two full-length ballets each year, including “The Nutcracker.” Dedicated to nurturing and inspiring artistic development, it provides a positive space that fosters friendship, commitment, teamwork and self-esteem.

Ryan and Lindsey “Ryan and I have been together six years and treat ourselves to a Disney trip each year—it’s our favorite place! Little did I know he was going to propose on our last trip. It happened in the morning at Magic Kingdom. We were posing for photos in front of Cinderella Castle when Ryan got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. hat is it all about? Is it about making a customer smile when they first walk in the door? Is it about doing good work and building relationships? For us, it’s about all of these things and more. It’s about what they add up to: having fun every day and making the most of each moment. “When a customer walks into our store, they’re genuinely glad to see us,” says Steve Samaras, Zachary’s owner. “Because they know we’re going to take care of them, whether that means replacing a small diamond that’s fallen out of a setting at no cost or giving a treat to their dog. And beyond that, we have fun.
