LA Night Jam set for June 8 - Public is Invited to International Event

LA Night Jam, a night time professional water sports competition and festival, makes its return for the third season in a row on Saturday night June 8th at TriLakes - the home of Bennett’s Water Ski and Wakeboard School.

Once again the event continues to attract the world’s top water ski jumping talent who will fly under stadium lighting for substantial cash prizes and points on the season-long Water Ski Pro Tour. Among those competitors is Hanna Straltsova, an athlete formerly from the nation of Belarus and who has called Zachary home for the past 6 years. She will be looking to defend her title here from the previous season - a season that included wins in every major event and two world championship titles. Her main objective this season is to remain undefeated on her way to also breaking the 200

foot barrier and the world women’s jumping record.

The men’s field will also include athletes who have won every major accolade in the world - None more so than former world champion and record holder Freddy Krueger. By far the most experienced competitor in the field, this Florida resident learnt most of his craft here at TriLakes and registered his first-ever professional victory in this state way back in 1995. His Louisiana connections are further cemented by the fact that he also earned his MBA while studying in LSU. Truely a dedicated athlete whom we welcome back annually to great support here in Zachary.

This event enjoys support from many great local entities - including our title sponsor Tides Medical, Louisiana’s Office of Tourism, Visit Baton Rouge and The Zachary Chamber of Commerce among many

May is “Brain Tumor Awareness Month” in Zachary

A Very Hard Month

Only two days after Mother’s Day, Zachary Councilwoman Brandy Westmoreland honored her mother and all who have fought and are fighting a brain tumor’s “devastating impacts.” The proclamation she read listed “loss of memory, sight, balance, coordination, taste, hearing, and the ability to drive, work, and go to school.”

At Zachary’s May 14 city council meeting, Westmoreland commented: “May has been a very hard month.”

Her mother, Elaine Hughes, received the diagnosis in May 2022 and “passed exactly one year later,” on

Joining Mayor David McDavid, center, and Councilwoman Brandy Westmoreland, who is holding the Brain Tumor Month proclamation, are members of the Rafe Cupit, Elaine Hughes, and Jeff Reynolds families. Also honoring those those who have fought and are fighting the disease, and the family members and friends who support them, are Councilpersons John LeBlanc and Ambre DeVirgilio at left and James Graves and Jennifer Boyd at right. As Westmoreland named persons from Zachary—or with ties to Zachary—who have passed due to brain cancer, family members and friends in the audience stood to remember and honor their “great determination, adaptability, and courage”: Muriel Regan (1985), Marty Massey (2017), Kyra Stanley (2019), Rafe Cupit (2020), Casey Peltier (2021), Larry Bellard (2016), Brad Vince (2021), Bryant Doiron (2023), Elaine Hughes (2023), Laura Hopewell Murchison (2023), Jeff Reynolds (2024), and Angela Richardson (2024).

Survivors

Springtime, often a synonym for rebirth and hope, appropriately celebrates not only those now free of their struggle but those whose fight lives on; therefore, pledging the support of the City of Zachary, Westmoreland also

of East Baton Rouge and the Feliciana Parishes, Scott and his father, Neal Haynes take

recognized “patients and survivors”: Kimberlyn Kirkland, Zara Mach, Glenn Overfield, Emma Rogillio, Khloe Sanders, and Anthony Scott. Following their diagnosis, some have already lived a few months, some a few years, and one a decade…and counting.

Brain Tumor Facts

The document proclaiming May “Brain Tumor Awareness Month” notes that “brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in adults under the age of 85 and…the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children in the United States.”

Louisiana, in fact, “ranks second in the nation.”

For the “one million Americans… living with a brain tumor…the survival rate is less than 35 percent…. In 2024, over 20,000 will die.”

And in 2024, 100,000 persons in the United States “will receive a primary brain tumor diagnosis.”

Focus on a Cure

Fewer than 30 “FDA-approved drugs and devices” exist to treat the “120 different types of primary brain tumors,” Zachary’s proclamation reads, “despite the numbers and the devastating impacts.”

The Zachary City Council, taking its cue from the courage of those fighting the disease in the Zachary community, joins them in its determination to raise awareness of brain tumor diagnoses in Zachary and “to support brain tumor patients and the research efforts of scientists and physicians as they work toward improved, less toxic treatments and an eventual cure.”

Kimberly Meiners, MD, Receives United Hero Award

Lane Family Practice congratulates Dr. Kimberly Meiners for receiving the UnitedHealthcare Hero Award!

Each year, the United Hero program recognizes physicians and advanced practice providers for delivering highly-rated patient experiences.

Selection for the United Hero Awards is driven by extraordinary achievement on patient-experience surveys. This means that award winners are ultimately chosen by the people we serve — and the honor recognizes the high-quality care these providers deliver to their patients and to the community.

To win a United Hero Award, providers must hit specific targets on their patient-experience scorecards over the course of the year, with each target covering a critical area of the patient experience.

In 2023, the targets fell into three categories:

• Getting needed care, for which providers had to achieve a 92% or higher score to win

• Care coordination, for which providers had to achieve an 88% or higher score to win

• Doctor-patient conversations, for which providers had to achieve a 58% or higher score to win

Congratulations to Dr. Meiners for this outstanding accomplishment!

The council “salutes” the patients and their families and all who advocate and provide support for those fighting the disease.

Online Support

While area hospitals do not offer support groups for those fighting brain cancer, Sarah Dulaney, Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge, notes that persons may explore the programs and services available through her office by visiting https://cancerservices. org/. Among the informational online sites she provides is CancerCare: https://www.cancercare.org/support_ groups/100-brain_tumor_caregiver_ support_group.

The coordinator for the online support group program at CancerCare explains that following COVID, “a lot of in-person cancer support groups moved to Zoom,” as those fighting cancer may have a weakened immune system due to their illness or treatment regimen.

She reports that while CancerCare offers brain tumor online support groups only for caregivers, Zoom groups the Zachary community may find helpful include:

- National Brain Tumor Society (monthly): https://braintumor.org/support-services/support-groups/braintumor-support-conversations/

- Glioblastoma Foundation (biweekly): https://glioblastomafoundation.org/patients/glioblastoma-patientand-caregiver-support-groups

- American Brain Tumor Association: https://www.abta.org/abta-connections/

Upcoming Event: A Walk

Brandy Westmoreland looks forward to future awareness events—for example, in Clinton, on the first Saturday in October, the second annual brain tumor awareness walk, which recognizes the courage of those who are fighting the disease and the family members and friends who support them.
