Feliciana Explorer 9-10-2024 Pigskin Preview

Page 1

EXPLORER EXPLORER

The pageantry of high school football — marching bands blasting the fight song, cheerleaders imploring fans to get louder, pads popping as a linebacker tackles a running back — returns Friday night as our teams kick off the 2024 season.

Zachary High looks to get back to the State Championship, while upstarts Silliman, Slaughter, East Feliciana, West Feliciana and Central Private seek to climb to the top and taste glory on the fields.

During the next few

months, players will compete in at least 10 games with the goal of reaching the state playoffs. They, along with their coaches, will spend hours practicing on the field and studying film in hopes of winning as many games as possible.

The players’ journey through the arduous season is often filled with peaks and valleys. Joining them for that journey are friends, family members, teachers, mentors and fans who will experience the euphoria of victory and the disappointment of losing.

We would be remiss if we didn’t recognize the countless others who are involved in making Friday night football such a special event in Louisiana. The marching band members, the band directors, the cheerleaders, the cheer coaches, the parents who volunteer at the concession stands, the maintenance crews that keep the fields looking pristine, the volunteers who clean stadiums after a game, the sports writers and photographers who document it all, and many, many others.

We wish nothing but

good luck to our local teams in Zachary and the Felicianas. There’s no cheering in the press box, but we always enjoy watching the teams we cover in these pages perform well.

We hope you will hold onto your “2024 Pigskin Preview” throughout the season to follow schedules and rosters and help supplement the coverage the Zachary Post and Feliciana Explorer will be providing.

We’re ready to tee the pigskin up for the opening kickoff of 2024, How about you?

Zachary Looks to Get Back to State Championship

The Zachary Broncos are starting over to some degree after reaching the state championship game a year ago. Only four starters return for the Broncos, two on each side of the ball. Zachary High School graduated 17 starters from last year’s state runnerup team and now, they’ll have to rely on a lot of new faces in 2024.

Zachary will also work to figure out who their starting quarterback will be once the season starts this fall. Caleb Gonzales and Henry Green are competing for that starting role, with Gonzales having played a number of starters snaps last year backing up Hudson Spangler.

Coach David Brewerton is once again planning for a deep playoff run, that after losing to Ruston in the 5A state title game a year ago, but he knows that he’s going to have to get some back-up players from last year’s team to emerge if they want to make it back to the Superdome in December.

Head Coach: David Brewerton (11th year)

2023 Record: 12-2

2023 Playoffs: Runner Up in Class 5A. Lost to Ruston HS 31-17.

2024 Playoffs: Non-Select

Key Players Graduated: LB Ethan Veal (ULL), WR/FS Luke Wisham (ULL), TE/WR Trey’dez Green (LSU), OT Kavion Broussard (Ole Miss), CB Dave Peterson, LB Kameron Peterson, RB Kameron Thomas (Arkansas State), QB Hudson Spangler, DB Dillan Durand, WR Tyson

Senior Quarterback Caleb Gonzales, Senior Safety Camorie Mcknight, Senior Defensive Lineman Sean Hamilton and Senior Offensive Lineman Clifton Webb will be our 4 captains this year!

George (Grambling State), LB Stetson Bell.

‍Team Outlook: The Zachary program in the last 10 years is one of the best in the South playing in 5 State Title games, winning 4 out of the 5, and averaging over 11 wins a year for the last 10 years. The staff and community in Zachary work hard and have special people in place to support their program. I had a chance to see the team in Spring and they look like a program that is not going anywhere and have a chance

to play for a 5th State Title in 2024 and their 6th appearance in 11 years. The program beat some great teams in 2023 ST. Augustine, West Monroe, Central, Barbe, Salmen, Destrehan, and Dutchtown and only lost 2 games won in overtime to Catholic HS BR 35-28 and State Title game against Ruston HS.

‍The Offense will have a new QB and in the lead for the job going into the fall will be Caleb Gonzales, who has lettered and seen time in games and knows the system. The run will
