“You’ll Wish that Summer Could Always be Here" The Felicianas Celebrate Memorial Day
By Patricia Stallmann
Watching their little ones play on Lake Rosemound’s sandy shore, even the very young expertly launching their kick boards, the adults must have hoped that summer would take its time, stretch out and last forever in their children’s minds…like those “lazy, hazy” summer days of Nat King Cole’s 1963 hit:
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
You'll wish that summer could always be here
In 1965, a few years after “Crazy Days of Summer” made the charts, the United States deployed combat troops to Vietnam.
And on Saturday, May 25, 2024, almost 60 years later, the Lake Rosemound community north of Saint Francisville, like families and faith groups and civic clubs throughout the states, continued its practice of hosting a picnic on Memorial Day to honor those whose service protects and prolongs the innocence of childhood: the security that we are safe forever in the arms of our family
On that crazy-hot early evening at the lake, among the celebrants were grandparents in their late seventies to early eighties. Perhaps some of them served during the Vietnam era. Anyone that age, however, remembers the stances for and against that war and the service, through it all, of those who took the oath to protect our freedom to embrace whatever stance we chose.
In the Afton Villa Baptist
Church graveyard, not far from the lake, in the peaceful shade of very old trees, one grave bears the Vietnam War plaque and the name of a then-very-young man, one of 58,000 Americans who died so long ago in combat in the blisteringly hot landscapes of that distant country. Those who survive him can hope that his own memories of a secure and happy childhood sustained him.
“May his Positive Example Inspire Us”
At Afton Villa Baptist Church
in Bains, the grave of Henry Jones, Jr., 21 at the time of his death in Bien Hoa province, Vietnam, lies at the tree-lined eastern boundary of the churchyard. The head stone describes a young man who served with honor in the United States Army.
His rank, Specialist Four, is immediately under Sargent; his specialty: Light Weapons Infantry. Michael Frenzel of Woodville, Mississippi, and Baton Rouge, a

Among other officials, present at today’s announcement was Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan, whose city received the largest grant of $20 million to replace 27.3 miles of pre-existing natural gas infrastructure. Since his election, Mayor Sullivan has made it a priority to replace his city’s aging pipes, which is happening due to Cassidy’s infrastructure law.
“Revising the NGDISM gas
line improvement grant from Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is a pivotal moment for the City of Donaldsonville,” said Mayor Sullivan. “Senator Cassidy was instrumental in helping us secure this funding and we are deeply grateful for his unwavering support. This project is an investment in the future of our city and positions our community for continued growth.”

“The Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC) is an appurtenance worn on a medal or ribbon to indicate a repeated award in the Army and Air Force. The Army restricts oak leaf clusters to awards for merit or valor.

A company (CO), Frenzel explains, “has anywhere from a few dozen to 200 soldiers. It's a tactical-sized unit that can perform a

Henry Jones, Jr., was a member of Company B, the 26th Infantry Regiment (26 INF), 1st Infantry Division (1INF DIV). Information from the Army notes that he “is honored on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C…. his name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 42w, Line 56.”

Eric Mendel of Bains Elementary: Louisiana’s “2024 Outstanding School Support Employee”
SuBmitted By WeSt Feliciana PuBlic SchoolS
On Thursday, May 2, Bains Elementary held a pep rally to celebrate student success during state testing. Little did the students and staff know that Principal Brittney Rosenbach had also called the pep rally for a surprise announcement! Guests from the Louisiana Department of Education, Joni Lacy and Dana Dauzat, recognized Paraprofessional Mr. Eric Mendel as Louisiana's Outstanding School Support Employee of 2024!
This program acknowledges those exceptional support staff employees—including teacher aides, paraprofessionals, school bus drivers, food service workers, clerical workers, and custodial and maintenance workers— who play an integral role in school and student success.
From the 700 nominations the Department received, it selected approximately 50 final applications and then 10 finalists. Mr. Mendel, Bains Elementary paraprofessional, emerged as the Overall State Winner!
The Bains Elementary administration describes Eric Mendel as “an approachable and caring paraprofessional” who teaches a leadership class and a Spanish class, who “goes above and beyond in his teaching by providing resources to students, bringing animals for lessons, sharing photographs and stories from his personal travels, and making the curriculum come to life.” Outside of the classroom, “he takes every opportunity possible to instill respect and manners in all of the students at Bains Elementary.”
And because of the many ways that he models service on a daily basis, there is no better person to teach service than Mr. Mendel.
In an effort to help even more, Mr. Mendel earned his commercial driver’s license so that he could drive bus routes, drive field trips, and assist with field day transportation. Every morning, he drives a bus route before class, and in the afternoons, he drives a bus route after his classes. He sets up for school events, removes any animals or critters from unwanted places and relocates them appropriately, as he is an animal lover, and he helps the various grade levels with projects. He even dressed up as Sasquatch to bring the first-grade curriculum to life as students read Big Foot Cinderella!
Students love the challenge of learning a foreign language because Mr. Mendel makes the class interesting and engaging. He has also integrated teaching third grade students cursive writing during his free periods to lift the load off of homeroom teachers
who are trying to devote every minute of class time to academics.
All of these contributions fall well outside of Mr. Mendel’s job description and require hours of planning outside of his classroom duties.
Beyond the classroom, he has also served as a Boy Scout leader in West Feliciana for many years.
He uses all of his experiences to build relationships with students and shares his adventures with them when that is relevant.
Finally, Mr. Mendel meets every challenge he faces with a calm, professional response.
He is truly the model for an Outstanding School Support Employee!
