One of the main objectives of the project was to recreate the links that the highway destroyed in the ‘70s between monuments like the Casa de Campo and Palacio Real. thematic parks
MADRID RIO Avenida de Portugal, one of the most important Salón de Pinos, designed as a linear green space, which will link the existing and newly designed roads into the centre of Madrid, relocated in a tunurban spaces with each other along the Manzanares River, located almost entirely on top of the monel and providing underground parking, converting the torway tunnel, with a”choreography” of the 8.000-fold pine tree planting with a repertoire of cuts. space into a garden, benefitting the local residents in particular with cherry.
Historic and socio-cultural background The river of Manzanares is a prime example of a “forgotten river“, in which river banks were mainly used for the M-30 highway, leaving the banks to be purely industrial in character. Such high traffic flow along the river bank removes the immediate access of the public to the waterfront and subsequently leads to a distance between the two historic parks: La Casa de Campo and el Campo del Moro.
cycling route
The highway itself brings about various negative externalities as well, undermining the urban quality of life with its acoustic and atmojspheric contamination arising from traffic and congestion. The river itself has also suffered the consequences of the underdesigned drainage system, in which in events of floods, unfiltered water would overflow into the water body. All these serves to explain the lack of importance given to the river which was a key source of livelihood in the past.

vision The vision of the project was to ntegrate the Mannares River into a new urban scenary,to improve the urban quality of the neighbourhoods adjoining the site and to establish a new mobility and accessibility system.
idea the idea was to remodel the existing river banks, creating an artifical landscape, whereby the highway is now channeled underneath the urban park surface. the adaptation of the manzanares river banks resulted in a public park, continuous green belt that stretches along the shoreline. In order to interconnect adjoining neighborhoods, 33 bridges have been established. Among them, three historic bridges have been restored and new ones have been designed by well known international firms, seeking to create new urban landmarks.
Critique of the park in the design aspect, although parks seemingly showcase literal patterns of flora and fauna, it refers back to the french garden parterre, in which certain elements can not be recognised on the street level but are instead revealed from above. multitude of compositional design strategies are employed to achieve the variations especially inportant in the design of a linear park, creating a sequence of episodes for the visitor. Perhaps a big question lies in the decision to submerge the infamously congested Madrid traffic through 43 km of new underground tunnels, creating great inconvenience which required immense persuation of the stakeholders. in ecological terms, the river has now become even more so artificial, with concretized canals and artificial banks. and though Real estate prices have doubled almost twice in value, but this has caused social dislocation and gentrification. however, after seven years of construction and 6 million euros, madrid rio has done the unimaginable, bringing the river back to life and enriching the quality of urban space for all to enjoy. Now everyone, local and foreigners, can enjoy this space that will help to generate a new relationship between neighbours and the Manzanares River, previously only a large ditch running through in the city
