By Rick DeBruyne Over 1250 people who live or work in Pomona hit the streets on Saturday, May 10, 8:00 AM12:00 PM for Pomona’s annual Beautification Day. Participants picked up litter, cleaned vacant lots, and removed signs and tape from utility poles. They helped elderly homeowners with yard work, planted gardens, and painted out graffiti. They worked with Pomona YMCA and Boys and Girls Club on major projects, picked up around city parks, and

spruced up schools. At the end of the morning each worker received a wristband for a free lunch and two vouchers for fair tickets for opening weekend. Following their hard work, participants met at Pomona Fairplex for a Community BBQ. The Philadelphia Girl Scouts opened the festivities with the Pledge of Allegiance and Girl Scout Oath. Following comments by Mayor Rothman, City Council members, and Assembly Member Norma Torres,

Fairplex provided a free burger or hotdog, chips and a beverage for each worker. Pomona School of Arts and Enterprise and Barfield Elementary students entertained the crowd. Western University conducted a free health fair and numerous agencies and organizations had resource tables and exhibits. Each year Fairplex, Pomona Trash Companies, and the City of Pomona Public Works Department have been major sponsors. This year Fairplex donated all

the food, personnel, and space for the BBQ. The Fairplex also gave each worker two fair tickets for the fair’s opening weekend. Athens, Burrtec, Mission Recycling, Waste Management, and Valley Vista each donated a forty yard dumpster and dump fees. The City of Pomona Public Works provided supervisory help, a truck to paint out graffiti, and two trucks to haul trash. Continued On Page 3

Passing The Passion For Fashion By Staff Writer The Stephanie Johnson Fashionplate Scholarship Fund Foundation was formed in honor of Stephanie Johnson. Stephanie Johnson was a dynamic, innovative young woman with a passion for the fashion industry whose life was cut short by an untimely death. Stephanie was attending courses studying fashion design while also working alongside her former employer and dear friend, Ms.

Helen SmithDraper at Ms. Smith's XcessoriesNThings in Pomona, California. Stephanie's nickname was, "glue gun" because she was often known to spontaneously redesign her friend's outfits with sparkles and jewels using her famous glue gun. Ms. Draper and a host of other supporters developed this foundation to honor the life of Stephanie Johnson and to encourage other dedicated young

people to pursue their dreams to become part of the fashion industry. Mr. Ezra Lee, owner of "The New Bond", a highend men's apparel store for over 30 years, heard about the foundation and very generously, upon retiring, has donated his entire stock of Men Clothing to the

Stephanie Johnson Fashionplate Fund Foundation. Mr. Ezra Lee's contribution to this foundation is sure to make an impact in the life of some young men or women who also have a desire to become part of the fashion industry.
