YWCA IS ON A MISSION YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear's MISSION is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear's VISIONÂ is to create a more caring community. The YWCA plays a leadership and collaborative role as it works to achieve positive change in the lives of individuals and in the community.

In 1914, the YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear was FOUNDED with the vision of bringing out the individual strengths of women and youth, and to foster resilience and self-sufficiency.

Over the past 105 years, programs have evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of women, children, and families in crisis. We provide critical services across five pillars: RACIAL JUSTICE & CIVIL RIGHTS, ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT OF WOMEN, EARLY EDUCATION & YOUTH ENRICHMENT, FAMILY SUPPORT & EMPOWERMENT, and HEALTH & SAFETY.

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear is in the heart of Wilmington at 2815 S. College Road. Our SERVICE AREA covers Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Carol Kennedy

The year 2019 will be remembered for the change and growth that the YWCA and Board experienced. Our new CEO, Velva Jenkins, stepped into her role in August and has done a remarkable job and continues to outdo our expectations every single day. Velva placed several new key staff in positions where they have flourished and added to the strong team dynamics of the YWCA family. Our Board grew to capacity with 21 members in a full range of diversity bringing new voices and insights into the meetings.

YWCA IS ON A MISSION together across four counties to provide our services and expand our mission.

Women of Achievement saw our largest attendance to date as well as the most nominees ever. With YWCA USA CEO Alejandra Y. Castillo as our keynote speaker, we filled the convention center to capacity. Next year will be something to look forward to as well, as the Board has the Reverend Naomi Tutu in the books to deliver the keynote. Please mark the date of March 4th, 2021 now and plan to attend. It is sure to be a memorable night!

Community participation in our Advocacy and Racial Justice events continues to increase thanks to the ongoing passion from the leaders of that committee, longstanding Board members: Evelyn Bryant, Suprena Hickman, and Lynne Jones.

The 1914 Society advisory group has been formally organized and discussed the needs of the YWCA programs and facilities as we move towards the future.

A visioning survey will be conducted gathering input from all our members and community partners. The needs of our community regarding use of space, programming, the pool, etc. will be explored and will be addressed in the planning of improvements to the current buildings, pool structure, and programs. There are exciting ideas for a new pool enclosure and improvements to all the interior, which the numerous swimmers will be happy to see.

Our community outreach programs Grandparent Support Network, REACH, and What’s Wrong With Different? were expanded into Pender County and new partnerships were developed in Brunswick County, thanks to Velva Jenkins and her strong community relationships. We are proud and delighted to work

RACIAL JUSTICE & CIVIL RIGHTS promoting peace, justice, freedom & dignity for all

STAND AGAINST RACISM

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear's Stand Against Racism is a signature campaign of YWCA USA to build community among those who work for racial justice and to raise awareness about the negative impact of institutional racism in our communities. This campaign is part of our larger national strategy to fulfill our mission of eliminating racism.

NO HATE. NO FEAR. The national theme for 2019 was "No Hate. No Fear.

Immigrant Justice is Racial Justice" with an emphasis on standing in solidarity with immigrants and communities of color. The YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear's 9th Annual Stand Against Racism united over 300 members of our community in a march from 1898 Memorial Park through Downtown Wilmington.

POTLUCK FOR PEACE

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear is committed to impact peaceful change in the community through our quarterly Potlucks for Peace. We unite the community through food, fellowship, and enriching dialogue. By combining a wide variety of community members we hope to create a powerful conversation about change, acceptance, and awareness.

In 2019, YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear held two Potlucks with over 350 community members in attendance throughout the year. In April and October we combined our potluck with Stand Against Racism and the Domestic Violence Shelter & Services Rally to support during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear is committed to boldly demonstrate a clear message: we are on a mission to eliminate racism.

ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENTÂ OF WOMEN empowering women

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear works to empower young women, eliminate barriers, and provide resources that allow women to become full participants in the economic mainstream of our community. We believe that when women are empowered to achieve economic self-sufficiency, communities thrive.

NEW CHOICES ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTÂ

New Choices supports women who are taking steps towards financial independence and self-sufficiency.

Since 1985, the New Choices program has supported women in the Cape Fear area; participants include survivors of domestic violence, mothers with low incomes, and single mothers re-entering the workforce.

In 2019, we served over 60 women in our area with career, home, and educational resources; fostering individual strength and resiliency by providing skills and confidence needed to succeed. Six of the participants received tuition assistance for local degree programs, and were assisted in finding gainful employment.

MISSION IMPACT Without New Choices, women like Cherelle Miller would not have the resources, skills, and confidence to succeed. A single mother of two, Cherelle came to the New Choices program in 2018. While working 40 hours a week, she took night and weekend classes to complete a nursing program at Brunswick Community College. With support and resources from New Choices Cherelle is on her way to a career in Internal Medicine.

EARLY EDUCATION & YOUTH ENRICHMENT building a future

EARLY LEARNING ACADEMY

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear's EARLY LEARNING ACADEMY provides a safe, nurturing environment for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. In 2019, 120 students were engaged in an inclusive space for kids from all socio-economic backgrounds and cultures.

The program focuses on social, emotional, and physical skills to develop positive concepts and problem-solving skills.

YOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Our YOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM provides academic support for students ages 5 to 12 years old.

The program offers academic tutoring, swim lessons, and age appropriate activities. In 2019, 105 students participated in the program.

YWCA SUMMER CAMP

Throughout the summer months, the YWCA provides fun and enriching activities for 115 students at the Main YWCA Campus and Wesley UMC locations. The program offers students an opportunity to participate in summer swim sessions, learn about various cultures, visit local attractions, museums, parks, and engage in educational, hands-on activities.

EMPOWERING GIRLS - REACH PROGRAM REACH After School Empowerment program served 130 elementary and middle school-aged girls at GLOW Academy and in the YWCA Youth Enrichment program.

REACH helps girls discover, develop, and use their voices to overcome challenges and celebrate their achievements.

MISSION IMPACT "The YWCA of Lower Cape Fear has truly been a blessing for our family! The teachers are so caring, respectful, and communicate very well with me and my sons. My oldest son comes home talking about how much fun he had in school, and my youngest always has a smile on his face. All thanks to the teachers and staff of the YWCA. FAMILY SUPPORT & EMPOWERMENT helping families

GRANDPARENT SUPPORT NETWORK

YWCA's Grandparent Support Network (GSN) is a peer support group for grandparents providing full-time care for their grandchildren. Grandparents have access to case management, mentoring, and on-the-go assistance to create a continuum of care for these children and families from birth to college.

In 2019, we served 49 grandparents and 91 children, with a 100% high school graduation rate.

We partnered with NC Nourish, Alpha Phi Alpha, Working Narratives, UNCW, Kids Making It, and UNCW Women in Schience and Technology to assist and provide resources like Christmas stockings, college fairs, science and technology education, mindfulness workshops, and potlucks.

MISSION IMPACT "I've been a member of the Grandparent Support Network for two years. Having a peer group of other grandparents who can provide emotional support, as well as advice, when raising my two grandchildren has been life-changing. GSN also provides much needed respite, especially because we are not as young as we once were!" - Diana G., YWCA's GSN Participant

EARLY PARENTHOOD PROGRAM In its second year, Early Parenthood Program of Columbus County provided 17 pregnant and parenting teens with direct services and one-on-one support.

Supported through grants from Smart Start and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI). This program works with a Community Advisory Council comprising of Columbus Co. Partnership for Children (Smart Start), Columbus County Schools, Dream Center, Health Department, Whiteville City Schools, Columbus Co. Regional Health Care, Columbus County Department of Social Services, and Southeastern Community College.

HEALTH & SAFETY living well

AQUATICS HIGHLIGHTS

YWCA of the Lower Cape Fear offers a variety of aquatics programs to promote water safety, water skills, and access to affordable and fun exercise. The YWCA Pool is open year-round, with open-air swimming in the spring and summer, and covered by our "Pool Bubble" in the fall and winter months.

In 2019, more than 700 children gained basic water skills through group and private lessons. Over 520 children participated in the Barracuda Swim Team Program, and our summer league had the most participants ever with 200 children.

The Barracudas claimed the Wilmington Swim League Championship for the 5th time in six years!

YWCA's water aerobics program had over 115 participants.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The YWCA Aquatics facility provides a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all members of our community. We offer pool use and various aquatics programming to: Cape Fear Enrichment City of Wilmington Special Olympics New Hanover County Schools New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Dive Team North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Wilmington Fire Department

GRANT PROGRAMS

Supported by Cape Fear Memorial Foundation Flow Motion, founded in 2013, serves 21 breast cancer champions to specifically target areas of the body most affected by breast cancer surgeries and treatments. No Fish Left Behind, in its first year, provided swim lessons to 151 children in the community, including participants in YWCA's Youth Enrichment Program, Grandparent Support Network, New Hanover County Schools, and members of the Latinx community shared by UNCW Professor Amanda Boomershine.

SPECIAL INITIATIVES furthering our mission

WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS The YWCA Lower Cape Fear Women of Achievement Awards, presented by James E. Moore Insurance Agency, raises key support for the YWCA's programs and services that promote racial justice and gender equity for thousands of women and their families in southeastern North Carolina.

The 34th Annual Women of Achievement Awards were held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. Over 600 guests joined us to honor, recognize, and celebrate the accomplishments of 71 incredible local women and young leaders as nominees from Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties. Ten women were selected as recipients of the Awards.
