KEYS OF HOPE WOMEN’S PROGRAM The Keys of Hope Women’s Program at the YWCA Downtown Center serves as a home, safe space and fresh start for women in need. Using a trauma-informed care approach, Keys of Hope provides valuable services to help women identify and implement solutions such as finding healthcare, beginning mental health treatment, and obtaining employment. Whatever the reason for a woman’s stay – escaping domestic violence, recovering from substance abuse or rebuilding a life devastated by loss – the program’s goal is to provide transitional housing in a safe environment with supportive services that promote self-sufficiency.

VICTIM ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT YWCA’s Victim Advocacy Program serves victims of domestic violence in Knox, Anderson, Roane, Loudon, Blount and Sevier counties, and offers services in English, Spanish, French and Arabic. YWCA advocates can assist clients in navigating the complex legal system, finding a support group, completing safety planning, locating housing and referring victims to other community resources. YWCA’s Freedom Inside program works with women in the Knox County Detention Facility who have experienced domestic violence. Freedom Inside provides individualized therapy and case management, while offering financial, job, mental health and housing assistance after they are released.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT A staple of the East Knoxville community, the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Community Center works tirelessly to provide youth with the tools necessary to overcome obstacles and to succeed in school and beyond. Summer Kids in Play and the After-School Enrichment Program offer tutoring, cooking classes, reading classes and much more. The Reach Program offers high schoolers incentivized programming and job skills training.

Supporting Youth Experiencing Trauma provides youth with coping skills for trauma they may have experienced during childhood.

GAMECHANGERS Conceived by YWCA Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley, GameChangers teaches middle school boys about healthy and unhealthy relationships, violence in relationships, skills for speaking out when they witness violence against women and more. GameChangers sets itself apart by using a hands-on, group mentoring model to pair small groups of middle school boys with adult male mentors. By focusing on topics discussed less often, such as healthy masculinity, victim blaming and bystander intervention skills, GameChangers offers a well-rounded and thorough 14-week curriculum. Through strategic partnerships with schools, after-school programs, and youth-serving organizations, GameChangers provides boys and young men opportunities to learn lifelong skills, connect with peers, build positive relationships and form bonds with role models in their communities.

YWCA’S SIX-COUNTY SERVICE AREA Victims of domestic violence residing in Knox, Anderson, Roane, Loudon, Blount and Sevier counties are encouraged to access YWCA’s victim advocacy services and scattered-site transitional housing options. YWCA’s brick-and-mortar presence in Oak Ridge is evident at the newly-renovated YWCA building at 1660 Oak Ridge Turnpike. In summer 2019, YWCA received funding to expand its victim advocacy services to families with a history of domestic violence and who work with Department of Children’s Services East Region (DCS) in Anderson, Loudon and Roane counties.

ARTS AND CULTURE HONOREE

Jackie Holloway Executive Director Canvas Can Do Miracles

Jacqueline Holloway is the Founder and Executive Director of Canvas Can Do Miracles (CCDM), a local nonprofit that provides free art classes and nutritious meals to disadvantaged members of the community.

Jacqueline is a multimedia artist with a deep love for nature and a belief in the healing power of artistic creation. She grew up in rural Tennessee in the '60s and learned to use driftwood, roots, and tree bark to create art, redefine the objects’ character, and cope with her experiences of racism and prejudice in her early life. Holloway advocates for at-risk women, domestic violence survivors, disadvantaged youth, and other vulnerable populations. The positive and motivational environment of CCDM uses art to give hope and support to underprivileged community members. Jackie is passionately devoted to helping class participants overcome barriers, establish self-sufficiency, and improve their overall wellbeing. In addition to her role as Executive Director of CCDM, Jackie has also illustrated and self-produced three coloring books for children and is an aspiring author.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY HONOREE

Keira Wyatt Executive Director C.O.N.N.E.C.T. Ministries

Keira Wyatt was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, and has deep roots in the Burlington Community. Since 2008, Keira has been the Executive Director and Co-Founder of C.O.N.N.E.C.T (Community Organizations Networking Neighborhoods Encouraging Change Together) Ministries. For over 15 years, C.O.N.N.E.C.T.—a hands-on community networking resource center—has offered a wide variety of programming, including housing support, re-entry programming, and continued support for those needing a second chance in life. Through this organization, Wyatt ministers to “the least, the last, and the lost." Keira has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Tennessee and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Leadership and Ethics at Johnson University. Wyatt is also a licensed clergywoman at Greater Warner A.M.E. Zion Church, whose mission is “to serve God by serving our community.” She is devoted to her business, education, and family, and she is tireless in her commitment to serving and ministering to her community.

COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT HONOREE

Imani Mfalme-Shúla Director, Community Defense of East Tennessee National Participatory Defense Trainer, De-Bug Silicon Valley

Imani Mfalme Shúla is the Director of the Community Defense of East Tennessee (CDET) Participatory Defense hub. She is also a National Participatory Defense Network Trainer and Organizer on staff at De-bug Silicon Valley, a nationwide community organizing model. Imani is a member of The Imperial Court (an auxiliary of female family members of Prince Hall Shriners) and the Eastern Star Jericho Chapter Seven. In 2020, she was the Illustrious “Commandress” for Tyre Court 82 Desert of Indiana of Jeffersonville, she is an active member of T.O.P.S. (Tennessee Organizing for Power Statewide), and presently she is a Loyal Lady of Malta 75. Through her local and national connections, Imani encourages and empowers individuals facing criminal charges (along with their families and their communities) to impact the outcomes of legal cases. She is devoted to transforming the landscape of power in the court systems. As the representative for CDET, Imani attends City Council meetings, attends budget meetings, and sends representatives to school board meetings to share the perspectives and experiences of CDET members. Imani is also active in community politics, collaborates with other community organizations, develops social media campaigns to educate communities of color, and recruits others--especially those directly impacted--to speak out against racism and other forms of injustice. Aside from her role as a community leader, organizer, and advocate, she is also a breast cancer survivor, mother, artist, writer, and builder.

EDUCATION HONOREE

Rosalind Martin Director of Education Knoxville Museum of Art

Rosalind R. Martin joined the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) in 1993 and became the Director of Education in 2008. She is a Knoxville native and grew up in the Burlington Community. She joined the United States Air Force shortly after graduating high school, and her work as an Audio-visual Media Specialist continued to inspire her interest in visual arts. As a member of the Museum's Senior Management team, Martin is responsible for the Educational Programs, Pre-K-12 Outreach, Adult Programs, and Visitor Services. She oversees the development and implementation of all programs, events, and activities that educate and involve community members, school groups, and the public. Martin was selected by the Tennessee Art Education Association (TAEA) as Art Museum Educator of the Year in 2005. In 2014, Martin was honored as Tennessee Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Educators Association. As an esteemed educator in the community, Martin was the first non-classroom instructor to be awarded this title. Martin presently serves on the Board of the Southeastern Museums Conference as a Council Director.

EMERGING LEADER HONOREE

Kirby Deal Executive Director Girls Inc. of TN Valley

Kirby Deal currently serves as the Executive Director for Girls Inc. of TN Valley, a local nonprofit with a mission to inspire young girls to be smart, strong, and bold. Kirby originally began her work with Girls Inc. in 2014 as the Middle School Program Instructor for the Oak Ridge center; this role developed her dedication to nonprofit work and bolstered her devotion to empowering women and girls. As a young woman finding her own strength as a leader, Kirby is passionate about inspiring others to see, appreciate, and cultivate their internal sense of strength and power. Over the past five years, Kirby has worked to diversify fundraising and create new revenue streams through nurturing valuable community partnerships and relationships. She has helped grow the organization from a smaller local nonprofit, serving two counties, to a regional organization that serves over 1,300 girls annually through a variety of programs across Anderson, Blount, and Knox counties in East Tennessee.

RACIAL & SOCIAL JUSTICE HONOREE

Gwen Mc Kenzie Executive Director Legecy Housing Foundation

Gwen McKenzie was born in South Carolina and relocated to Knoxville in 1968. She is the Executive Director of Legacy Housing Foundation, whose mission is to provide innovative programs, life-enhancing services, and affordable housing communities for everyone in need.

McKenzie considers this her “dream job” and is grateful for the opportunity to do what she loves on a daily basis: help other people. In 2017, McKenzie was elected to Knoxville City Council representing the 6th District and became the first African American woman to serve on City Council. McKenzie introduced the African American Equity Restoration Resolution to identify gaps and strategic solutions to provide opportunity and access to move and build people from generational poverty to generational wealth. She volunteers at several local nonprofits, including C.O.N.N.E.C.T. Ministries and Voice of the Voiceless. In addition to her role at Legacy Housing Foundation, as a political figure, and as a community volunteer, Gwen also serves on the board for Knoxville Area Urban League, Zoo Knoxville, World United Ministries, and several other local associations.

SCIENCE, TECH. & ENVIRONMENT HONOREE

Dr. Amy Elliott 3D Printing Scientist Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Dr. Amy Elliott is a scientist by day, science TV personality by night, and even has a 3D printed, life-sized statue of herself in Dallas as a part of her AAAS IF/Then ambassadorship role. Elliott grew up in middle Tennessee, close to the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama (also known as “Rocket City”). In Highschool, she began her work in robotics, received an internship at NASA, and started her journey as a scientist. As a Research Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Dr. Elliott does cutting-edge research on 3D printing technology, meets with industry leaders from around the country to consult on proper uses of this technology, and holds several patents. Elliott advocates for women working in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) career field, serves as a mentor for female STEM majors, and hopes to see males and females equally represented in the STEM field. In recent years, Amy has seen an increase in the number of women pursuing careers in STEM, and she expects to see this growth continue. As a TV personality, Elliott was featured on the engineering reality show “The Big Brain Theory” on The Discovery Channel. She was later recruited as a science host by The Science Channel for 7 seasons of The Science Channel’s “Outrageous Acts of Science” (which airs frequently on Cable TV).

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT HONOREE

Dr. Martha Buchanan Director and Public Health Officer Knox County Health Department

Dr. Martha Buchanan received her undergraduate degree in biology from Carson Newman College, and her medical degree from the East Tennessee State University James H. Quillen College of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of North Dakota Family Practice Residency Program in Minot, ND. Dr. Buchanan joined the Knox County Health Department in 2004 as assistant public health officer and was later promoted to health officer.

She was appointed director in 2009 and still maintains her role as public health officer. Under her leadership, the Knox County Health Department has partnered with the University of Tennessee to form Tennessee’s first academic health department and recently became the first health department in the state to be accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board.

A graduate of Leadership Knoxville, she sits on the board of the Community Health Council, Metro Drug Coalition and YWCA. She currently is working with community leaders to address access to mental health care and how to relieve the impact of mental health on the justice system. She also serves on the Naloxone Community Collaborative and various community coalitions aimed at addressing the opioid epidemic.

Since 1899, YWCA Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley has been a leading force in community change. With a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, YWCA offers transitional housing and supportive services to women who would other be homeless; advocacy, outreach, support groups, counseling and prevention services for victims of domestic violence, youth and family development services; and afterschool programming.

As one of the older organizations in East Tennessee, YWCA has improved the lives of women and their families for generations. In 1900, fifteen girls alone in the city found sanctuary at the YWCA’s humble doors. By 1934, nearly 200 women lived on the top two floors of the bustling facility, assessing training and work opportunities with other women in need.

Today, YWCA continues to provide life-saving and timely programs for more than 10,000 women, children, and families annually through a variety of high-quality programs at three sites, including downtown Knoxville, East Knoxville, and Oak Ridge. YWCA’s service area includes Knox, Anderson, Roane, Loudon, Blount, and Sevier counties.
