Spring/Summer 2013

It has been a very busy and eventful first year as a Councillor for the Ward but also very rewarding. I have been involved in several campaigns locally from Saving our Sorting Office which drew strong support from local organisations and community councils from Bridgeton – Dalmarnock – Calton and Dennistoun unfortunately the Royal Mail were determined to press ahead with the closure and we lost the Cubie Street sorting office. Another campaign saw us attempt to prevent the closure of the Royal Bank of Scotland branch on London Road – although they too decided on closure the campaigns brought out the best in our communities. Local people came together to fight these unjust decisions and I am confident that we can build upon that and ensure that vital services are protected for local people in the Ward. Although these decisions were disappointing, it hasn’t all been doom and gloom. The Ward, over the past 12 months, has seen some really impressive projects delivered from the reopening of the Olympia at Bridgeton Cross to the opening of the Community Safety Services buildings at London Road not to forget the Emirates Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome all this as well as securing millions of pounds in investment for the whole ward. Calton I was delighted when it was announced that the Calton would benefit from a massive £3.5 million pounds investment from Glasgow City Council and the possibility of an additional £2.8 million could also follow. I would also like to thank our MP Anas Sarwar for his support in securing this investment at a time when the Council was announcing huge cuts due to the budget settlement from the Scottish Government.

There also must be praise given to the local community who were the driving force in highlighting the issues in the area and the Calton Area Association have played a huge part in bringing this investment to the area and who also played a huge part in designing the master plan and matrix for the area.
