Personal Experimental Design The Story of Me // Academic project. Individual work Year : April 2019
Turn patterns into abstraction patterns
This work was one of the design topics in my freshman year. By selecting the memory fragments that were important to me personally, I formed 27 scenes and transformed the stories from concrete memories into abstract emotional spaces, summarising them into four story paragraphs. After that, I connected them to my personal-story experience field through circulation.

The memory fragments are organised within a framework of a nine-square grid. The design idea is as follows:
Memory picture (single word)
Organise the memory (sentence)
Combine the chapters (paragraph)
Construct the story(article)
Translate the plain image into a threedimensional situation and classify the memory fragments into four categories: happy, sad, natural and artificial.

Fang-Yi, Sheu
- born in Yilan, Taiwan
- famous modern dancer in Taiwan
- former principal dancer of 'Martha Graham Dance Company'
- founded 'LAFA & Artists Dance Company'
- won the National Award for Arts in 2007
Design Concept
Disassembling and staggering the floor as if it was a dancing movement, such as jumping or rotating, and making the building become a part of the dance performance.
The site is located in an alley in the Zhongshan district of Taipei, near the MRT Zhongshan station, because of the environment and planning around it, which have attracted many artists and cultural industries to the area. Moreover, at the rear of the site is the Tsai Jui-yueh Dance Research Institute, which is now a ballet dance studio for children. I therefore chose Fang-Yi Sheu as the owner in order to develop an integrated residential dance studio to echo the ballet classroom. The main function of the studio is teaching physical development courses to young children.

This design is based on the library of my university as the design theme, and the site is the location of the university’s current library. The way I imagine the future library of my university is that the quantity of books should no longer be the main point. Nowadays, students go to the library to read their own books rather than the library’s books. This is vastly different from how libraries were used in the past. Perhaps libraries will in future become a new venue for communication rather than a quiet and serious space.
Design Criteria
- Preserve the trees at the entrance
- Flexible use of space
- Outdoor terrace on each floor
- Glass facade - reduce the boundary between the interior and exterior of the building
Design Concept
Creating a field makes people feel like being in a forest, where they can read, communicate and relax.

Site Condition
Through the renovation of the campus library, I plan to create a new public space with ‘communication, relaxation and learning’ at its heart. Space is returned to the users for them to define it, so that it can be used flexibly. The library will not be as rigid or strict as other libraries, and greenery will be introduced into the building, so that people can feel that they are in a forest and are wandering through nature in order to find a quiet place to read or just relax.

This design is based on Qingpu in Taoyuan. We are planning a social housing complex with young people as the customer group. This decision was based on the local population structure and the urban planning in this area. There are many educational and entertainment facilities around the area, and it is also a very convenient place from which to travel to Taipei. We are planning to combine the complex with the public function of a kindergarten so that it can solve the problem of insufficient childcare in this area.
Design Process
This design adopts a gradual retreat method, and introduces greenery into the building in a way that optimises the surrounding landscape and allows the residents to have a lovely living environment. The courtyard of the community can be used by the residents, neighbours and children of the kindergarten, and it also connects with the children’s park next to it, thus ensuring a cosy environment.

Design Concept
“All phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble and a shadow, like dew and lightning. Thus should you meditate upon them.” This verse is from the Diamond Sutra, which expresses the thought that everything in the world is created by causation and combination. Nothing is permanent, everything is temporary like a bubble, like the morning dew, and as fleeting as lightning, are just like a dream, and the master of all thoughts lies in our heart, which also represents a key concept in Buddhism, --impermanence.

Design Process
#worship hall
The main concept is to bring all the Buddhist temples together in one field, initially with a number of separate spatial units like in an art gallery, but then to integrate them more systematically into a circular shape. In order to reflect the Buddhist idea of ‘emptiness’, the volume is sunk down, leaving only a pavilion in the middle and creating a sense of hierarchy with the variety and density of plants.
Programme
Number of people:
The structure is based on basic Buddhist principles – Precept, Meditation and Wisdom – to form three main axes. These axes are a complementary and gradual process, and are planned as Precept - Four Heavenly Kings, Meditation - Worship Hall, Wisdom - Zen Hall, to form a sequence of space and a moving experience. Public spaces:
1. Long-term monks: 44
2. Short-term monks: 18
3. Officers: 12
4. Worshippers: 150

Worship hall
The plan for the Worship Hall is to dig the whole body down, leaving only a semi-outdoor pavilion on the ground floor. ‘Meditation’ is the main axis whereby people’s hearts can be calmed through a space where they can communicate with themselves, buddhas, bodhisattvas, etc. No matter how you walk, you can reach the final destination, which is the Buddha Hall, and through the surrounding halls layer by layer, people walk in it as if they are practising around the temple.
