thesis, it is an Equestrian Complex the Chekka coast. This project nature, humans, and architecture, horses.

TRANSCENDANCE THROUGH HARMONY

AN ARCHITECTURAL EXPLORATION OF OUR INTERACTION WITH NATURE THROUGH EQUESTRIANISM

MArch Second Year | Final Year Project

Under the direction of advisors: Rachid Feghaly and Rana Dubeissy And acknowledgements to : Ghassan Abou Haydar, Antoine Charbel, Nada Chbat, Rim Zgheib, Divina Abou Jaoude, Amin Iskandar, Hiami El Rahi

THE THEME

The human experience has always been in partnership with horses In warfare, for mobility, for hunting, and for entertainment.

This extensive history has brought us closer to horses and has enabled us to communicate with them through a flow of emotions.

The recognition of their beauty, coupled with our unique connection to this animal, created the art of equestrianism.

To create architecture that shapes the connection of man to earth through the experience of a horse ’s emotions as the embodiment of the oneness of the world.

THE SITE - HAMAT, ON THE COAST OF EL-HERI

WHERE NATURE CONVERGES the intersection of land, sea, and sky. TOPOGRAPHY,

1- URBANITY

An organic urban fabric with stable but non repetitive character.

3- MIX

Site offers recreational facade to a natural equestrian escape, at the intersection of 3 zones: Leisure, Residential, Agricultural.

2- CONNECTIVITY

Between two global roads (national connectivity): This encourages flow, which attracts functions that need flow, and in turn attracts more flow.

4- DENSITY

Low built density area making it feel calm and secluded

INTERFACE

Section 1 “Through Movement” Visual and spatial access is limited ⇒ Strong directionality

Public/Private Interface: -The cliff constrains spatial access to private attraction => limited permeability -directs vision to the sea and to attractions

Section 2 “To Movement” Topography levels out suddenly after previous impermeability

⇒ visual and spatial access is encouraged

The site is accessible and has porosity The sudden change in permeability creates a monopoly towards the site

CONCEPT

Horses are the soul of the earth. Their wild discipline connects to us through a celestial flow of emotion.

=> Separation is an illusion

We are part of nature, and the natural is within us, all we need is access to it.

The separation of the 4 elements is an illusion. Hamat embodies this harmony as the intersection of sky, land, and sea. => Hamat is the representation of this convergence, the portal into the natural realm.

With our evolution, humans have lost themselves, and are in need of healing. To heal through our reconnection to our higher self by manifesting our bond with nature through physical contact with another living being, the horse.

Merging of the above ideas: Equestrian Complex in Hamat; Escape from the mundane and transcendence into our own soul, through physical connection to horses, the embodiment of nature; at the conversion point of the 4 elements.

TRANSCENDANCE THROUGH HARMONY - THE PROCESS

THE PROJECT

As the ground level increases and the project rides up the hill, the same plan recedes away from the road and into the topography, seamlessly integrating into the shape of the site and its topographic lines.

SITE ANALYSIS

1- EVOLUTION OF THE URBAN FABRIC

A symbiotic growth between port and city, beginning as a defense harbor and developing into the commercial/industrial port.

2- RELATION TO THE CITY: ACCESS VS. RUPTURE

Rupture is mainly caused by the international highway blocking physical access from city to port, and access is primarily only visual through secondary roads and staircases connecting a the primary road to the highway.

CONCEPT

1- TO STITCH

A promenade along the coast of Beirut through its landmarks, stitching city and port.

REHABILITATION OF THE PORT

2- IN VS. OUT

The double-curved coastal morphology of the port is reinterpreted into the functional division of the port; Private area along a centrifugal arc (port to the world), Public area along a centripetal arc (city to the port).

3- CHALLENGE: PORT/CITY DIVISION - SOLUTION: PHYSICAL ACCESS

There are 4 main rupture points: 1- Water separating biel and port; 2- Cliff isolates Karantina; 3- Highway prevents access from Gemayze; 4- Highway divides Karantina and Mar Mikhael. The port is restitched to the city by creating 4 points of physical access where there was previously division.

The main axes extend from Beirut’s urban fabric and intersect with the directional arcs.

4- MAIN AXES
1- Bridge connecting breakwater to port.
3- Staircase through C.H. Station.
2- Urban balcony from along Karantina cliff.
4- Road redirection to allow pedestrian bridge.

PRIVATE OPERATIONAL PORT AREA |

SAMPLE PROJECTS

The operational port area is a functional space, and it is connected to the public area. The main cartesian grid thus reflects functionality, and switches to a curved grid when

2- ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK

The administrative block is an urban balcony as a green buffer and extension to Karan

tina. It integrates into the cliff in a curved extroverted block connecting by a ramp to the public area through the free zone.

TRAIN STATION by Yvette MANSOUR

CONCEPT

2- Parking of the Charles El-Helou Station; 3- Paths towards cultural port zone.

PLANS

Visual access into the interior of the station as well as to to the trains through: 1- Void; 2- Glass plane

Green areas as sound and city buffer zones as well as social and relaxation spaces.

The third project is focused on spaces in the luxurious setting the contextual advantages in a

TOWER

the creation of pleasant living of Horsh Tabet, by maximizing private residential tower.

+ TOWER

BArch Third year

Under the direction of : Hiami El-Rahi, Samar Sayah, Camille El-Helou, Grace Rihane

CONCEPT

1- PLACEMENT

The placement of the tower at 1/3 of the site to enable the landscaping of the remaining 2/3.

3- THE AXES

The orientation of 2 perpendicular axes allowing: - the advantage of 2 views: west to the sea and east to the mountains - a well oriented and sunlit south facade.

5- BLOCKS

The division of quadrant-resulting volumes, thus creating proportionally better-integrated forms into the built context.

2- ORIENTATION

Main view to the west towards the sea as well as advantageous east and south orientations.

4- ZONING

The distribution of zones into the resulting quadrants, connected at the intersection of both axes where lies the core circulation. Day areas to the west (sea view), night area to the south and east (mountain view).

6- RESULT

Well-oriented and outlined interior spaces. Landscape includes water and greenery (serenity) and sunken terraces (privacy).

BArch Third year

Under the direction of : Hiami El-Rahi, Samar Sayah, Camille El-Helou, Grace Rihane

CONCEPT

1- URBAN HEIGHT INTEGRATION

Integrating height to built context to avoid suffocation in the already dense context.

3- ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRATION

Metalic structure + material tectonics

=> sharp volumetric shape as an architectural integration by rupture.

5- SOCIETAL INTEGRATION

The mall is socially integrated by being easily accessible for pedestrians, connecting the building to its social context.

2- URBAN CARVING

Carving the volume at the crossroad - urban accessibility magnets.
