‘COLLECTION ZERO’

2013

BEFORE WE GO TO THE PRINT The story started in spring 2012. The city I lived in got suddenly swamped by people interested in skateboarding. It was most likely the outcome of the longboarding trend that was big at the time. This fact probably isn’t taken too kindly by the true skaters. At last something was going on. A lot of friends I knew and would never expect to ride, started, despite the rather later age than its normal to begin. Although most of the new users initially used the longboard or cruiser as a means of transport to work or to school, more and more of them began to be more interested in it as a sport and started to spend a lot more time riding. Go for a ride after work with a bunch of friends, watch the sunset with a bottle of beer and get away from the daily routine. This is what got to us the most and made us a lot closer friends. Those who rode more began to move in different directions which changed their board preferences. A large group of people began to slide and grind urethane on the local hills, downhill got popular. Despite the traffic, people started hitting most of the hills in the city. Some

people got more interested in slaloming through cones, or riding street and doing actual skate tricks on a classic skateboard. At this time we started reflecting on this community and realizing this is starting to be a culture that is widely spread out. If anyone until then thought that the current skate community will forever remain the domain of boys in baggy pants and a hat put on sideways, he had to admit that it is only a particular point of view far more complex. Which actually is not linked with fashion and really rather describes what might be called a lifestyle. At the time we were putting together the concept of our brand, we both had more than 5 years of experience working in the sk8/snb environment, so we did not have much of a delusion that we’d come up with a groundbreaking company. These companies have a huge community of loyal customers, which brings a burden with big responsibility where they can’t let these customers down. We wanted to make shirts. In a way that we could quickly react to things that we thought were cool at the moment. T-shirts mainly for us and our friends with whom we go ride, also for those with whom

we meet regularly at music concerts, regardless of genre, for those with whom we agree at the bar when we discuss our opinions on things that appeal to us. I consider our selves very lucky that we’ve started with a bunch of guys who were there when skateboarding started in Czech in the 80’s. From their stories, we could imagine what it was like to skate during communism. How everything changed in the 90s with the boom of skate brand and with the retrospective of someone who’s been in the Czech skate environment since the very beginning till now. At the same time it’s about people who love bikes this is also a significant part of the story.

At the beginning there were a lot of obstacles, but we do not want to annoy anyone by talking about that. The fact that we made it and you are holding this catalog in your hands gives us a sense of personal victory, behind which is the convoluted way that we had to go through. Also thanks to all sorts of internet profiles where we could watch how the catalog is little by little being put together. Regarding our own production that we would like to introduce to you on the following pages. We carefully select each

individual artwork. Each contains a piece of us and those which get published are those, that we ourselves get pumped to wear and ride in. It sounds obvious, and so it should be. This however, is the main reason why we believe that what we do, we do well. We know that our products won’t appeal to everyone and therefore we do not try to be a particular “style” or fad. You cannot really say for whom is our product exclusively designed. Our products are simply for those who like it. On the following pages we will introduce each product, and with that a bunch of great people who helped us make our dreams come true. Big personalities who impressed us with their unique approaches to life that made us very happy, because they agreed to cooperate with us on “collection zero”. Without them, maybe just our passion for the company might not of been enough, and these pages would have never been written. By doing this, we will try to move, even if only slightly, this culture a little further. If we manage to pass our excitement along to a few people from the same thing that got us excited, it will mean for us that what we do is worth it. (yv)

MARTIN VAGNER - BOWL SKATER This kid we met at the beginning of our efforts and Martin for me was the proof that birds of a feather flock together. It was during our visit of the bowl in Strašnice, after a short ride on the concrete waves, our attention was caught by a young kid. When this kid got in the pool all the older experienced guys got out of the way. We shortly saw the reason why, this

34

“young gun” surfed through the whole bowl with such aggression and style, we stood stunned. It was immediately clear that this skinny fifteen year old kid will bring something much bigger and at that moment I knew that Martin must be the first member of the Cult. It was people like him we wanted on the team, guys we could support and at the same time get inspiration from.

And so it happened. There are not many young guys that do not go with the trends and find interest in the old days, when all you’d do was ride concrete waves over and over and the music was about two guitars, bass, drums and a pissed of guy behind the microphone. This one we shared with Martin.. (LUBA)

JAKOB VON ROSENSTEIN - MUSICIAN I will never forget the day I found at home a vinyl with a guy who had a wild wave-like hairstyle and a red shirt. It was called Best of Elvis Presley, in that moment my world changed. The song I liked the most was Heartbreak Hotel, the mood, the stopwatch, the text of a broken heart, and ultimately to wailing guitar solo and the rainy piano follow-up, like nothing I’ve heard

before. Many years later I discovered that it was a simple blues twelve and that’s when began another musical change of my life, I’ve discovered blues - easy to play hard to feel. Blues opened my way from classic rock n roll, to punk to metal, blues licks were doing a great job. It does not matter if he sings and plays alone about a night full of alcohol and the

woman who left him or a band that sings about the engine and wildness, it is always the blues. Blues is also a way, a way after the party when you were animals, a way of life when you have nothing certain, just a long road that does not stop. We’re it’s supporters..

TOMAS ‘KESSON’ NOSEK - STREET SKATER When you get caught by skateboarding, it grabs you and doesn’t let go. In my life I haven’t felt anything as beautiful as skateboarding. The feeling when you ride through the city and people are just turning around and looking confused is priceless. It gave me a different view on everything around me, it has changed me in many different ways. The music I listen to, the clothes I wear and the way I think. The essential part that gives you the great feeling while

skateboarding are friends, I couldn’t ride alone. Skateboarding is all about your approach to it, which reflects the character of the person, you’re not good if you don’t practice, but never forget to enjoy it. Another reason why I kept skateboarding for so long is probably because I played hockey for a long time. Even though I enjoyed it, you had to strictly follow the rules and listen to the coach or referee, and you had the feeling that you are forced to do

everything or sometimes too restricted. This on the other side taught me that if you do not try properly, you wont succeed. This is how skateboarding got to me, it’s a way of self-realization that I probably could not find elsewhere. I do not ride with any big ambitions, I just ride as long as you can and as long as I will be healthy and have time for it. I want to spend time with people that I like and enjoy it.

ALES MORAVEC - MOTORCYCLE DOG Since I was a little kid I was interested in cars. I must say that I was always interested in something a little different than my friends. Everyone my age wanted the fastest BMW or some other high-end sports car, I was more interested at that age in American motor products. When I bought my first American car (‘91 Pontiac Firebird) it completely changed my world and I my childhood dreams started to come to life... I was mesmerized. After a while I traded the Firebird for a Mustang and began planning what will be my next “toy”. I’ve always wanted to ride a motorcycle, even though cars were at the time my

40

true passion. Not much time passed by and I was in the process of getting my bike license, ready to fulfill another childhood dream. During the course, I was thinking hard about what bike to get. After many restless nights and endless abuse of Google search, I have come to a decision. Buying something “for now” is just stupid and thus clear choice was the Harley-Davidson. After that I didn’t waist one minute and stopped by a local Harley-Davidson dealer and ordered something I’ve wanted since I was a kid. After a month and a half the phone finally rang and it Michal from H-D letting me know that the beauty from

Milwaukee has at last arrived. The day I got on the beast and took it for the first ride I will never forget! It was amazing to find out what feeling you have from just driving around on a bike, something I could never experience in a car. The feeling when you can just hop on the bike after work, on a weekend or any and every other free time you have and just ride... anywhere, just go and experience the landscape differently than you would in a car. There is no need to go fast, yeah sometimes it’s fun, but the main thing is the driving feel that is so hard to describe. All these little things are what makes my CULT OF THE ROAD...

MICHAELA LOVE - ART NAILATOR I’m Michaela. In life I stand behind one important thing that became my life project, I call it “Make Love” = do things you love with love. Emotions are essential part of life therefor I put

them into everything I do. Anytime I do something I try to put a part of me into it, do it with love. I make trendy hands (Nails with love), I bake sweet pink cakes (Cupcakes with Love).

For my friends together with photographs we create photos with depth, souls and emotions. For me that is what connects with Cult of the Road, honest, friendly and love making brand. MICHAELA LOVE
