1. How does the referencing system in your office work? The referencing system in our office is to our architect‟s personal preference.

B376 -01-01 ‘Botha’

Project number, in numerical order of projects.

Page number.

Drawing type: 01 – Existing / site information 02 – Sketch plans / first draught 03 – blank / reserved 04 – Council submission drawings 05 – Tender documentation 06 – Layout drawings 07 – Detail drawings 08 – Schedules 09 Drawing register

Each project has a file on the system, as well as a physical file (labeled with this referencing system, plus the project title which is generally the address) with notes, sketches and any hardcopy and/or printed information. When doing a project, we collect the physical file from the architect‟s office as a reference. Then we access the project files from our workstations:

Desktop\ Shortcut to CAD projects 10.0

G:\CAD projects 10.0

G:\CAD projects 10.0\B376 Physical address

The hierarchy of information: G: (Data (D) on „noel‟ (G:))

Network drive

Workstations BOTHA1 BOTHA2

BOTHA3

This file access system means that only one person can work on a particular file at a time. Others may view the file as a (read only) and can make changes which can be transferred at a later stage. The workstations are connected to a UPS which keeps the computers running even when the electricity has been cut, providing precious time needed to save any work.

2. How does your office find work on a substantial basis? Our architect is one of the main architects of the Claremont area, with many residential buildings, complexes and industrial buildings behind his name. From my experience, work generally comes to him, with his architect‟s board up on the sites he is involved in and by word of mouth. Recently, our architect has been pro-active and has taken interest in a particular site. He gathered and compiled all of the site information and zoning requirements for the site, and drew up a set of conceptual sketch plans. With these proposed sketch plans he approached several individuals/developers who took immediate interest in the proposed scheme(s) and went as far as to get QS‟s and engineers involved who are now requesting more detailed layout drawings. If this project happens, our architect will supervise the entire job, and this will become the number one priority on out project planning schedule, along with the many more “1‟s” which we are busy with at present. 3. Analyze your office environment: a.

How many people are there? There are three people in my office: Noel A. Botha – our architect, Rukiya Abrahams – a fellow student from my 1st year class at CPUT, Yusuf Sampson, (me) – a student draughtsman and 2nd year student at CPUT.

b. What are their respective responsibilities? Noel: as the architect, and the only architect in his firm; he does everything. He handles all of the clients, all of the paperwork, all of the phone calls and everything else. He gives us work to do and teaches us valuable lessons daily through talking to us about projects, making many rough sketches accurately expressing his ideas without fault, and through involving us in his design process as well us resolving technology. Myself & Rukiya: we are both students, and are both working for Noel as „contract draughtsman‟. We draw up and tweak whatever is required, and are often put to the test of designing layouts and schemes as idea generating exercises, after which our architect resolves our ideas or elaborates on the idea he had in mind so that we can clearly understand what is required of us. Recently, I have been drawing up proposed new apartment flats and alterations to residential dwellings. As for tea duties; every man for himself. c. How does communication work in the office? As we work in separate offices (Noel in his own and myself and Rukiya in our own), we go to Noel‟s office in the morning for a debrief on the previous day‟s work, and for a briefing / planning meeting for the work of the day ahead. If we have questions about the work, or have completed the work, we ask for assistance or ask if there is anything more that we can help with. If Noel has his hands full or needs us to do some work for him, he will come to our office with what he needs done or he will call us to his office to show us what he needs done.

d. How are new projects tackled – who gets involved in what stages of the projects? New projects always start with our architect. Noel sets up the drawings for us; he accurately draws up the site from the SG diagrams and then hands it over to us from there. From there we draw up plans and sections of either new or existing structures, explore with new layouts etc. Ongoing projects are dealt with differently. With these types of projects, long and detailed discussions of the history and progression of the projects are explained and it is required of us to make required changes and tweaks to these projects, often taking weeks as when one drawing changes, all of the drawings change.

CPUT 2nd year architectural technology

B367 Kenridge, Durbanville -02-01 This drawing was prepared for submission to the local authorities (council), with the intent of receiving permission to build the additions and alterations as proposed in the drawing. Should the drawing be approved by council, it will serve as a legal document. This drawing is for the Client, who requested architectural drawings for a new carport and kitchen alterations. The drawings should not be presented in any other way, minor changes like the layout may change, but the scale of the drawings and the specific information on the page should be presented as shown: Each component of the drawing must be titled clearly and appropriately, with a drawing name and scale. The scale should only be shown on one drawing component if all of the components on the page are the same scale, to avoid unnecessary repetition. The orientation must be indicated by a clear north point, and should be relative to a site or floor plan. All new work on plan view drawings must be fully dimensioned and annotated; existing work which is not relative need not be dimensioned. The site plan must always have fully dimensioned boundaries, and new work shall be clearly distinguishable from existing, as well as have dimensions from the boundaries for the purpose of checking that it falls within regulations and for when setting out. Sections should only have vertical dimensions, be fully annotated (may refer to a legend if the annotations clutter the drawing and make it illegible) and show the key structural components and how the structure is put together. Elevations should not contain dimensions and annotations unless necessary. They should show the façade with all of its finishes and fenestration and openings. They should indicate the boundary lines where applicable. A set of notes/specifications which cover all basic construction requirements/methods should be present on at least one drawing in a set, and a legend with reference to the drawings should cover the more specific construction requirements. The title block must contain: o The project title and description of the project, including the correct ERF number and address. A project number relative to the architect’s referencing system should also be present in the title block, o A description of the drawing components on the page, o The correct date, scale, who the drawing was drawn by, the registration number of the professional responsible for the drawing and the logo of the architect/firm. o Space for the signatures of the owner and architect, and the date of when the drawing is to be signed. Once the drawing is signed by owner, architect and is approved by council, it becomes a legal document.

The specific components that make up this drawing are: o Site & floor plan, o Carport roof plan, o Sections and a o Street elevation. Site & ground floor plan: The site and ground floor plan are combined as the structure takes up most of the site, showing all of the boundaries. The site and proposed new carport are dimensioned and boundaries are annotated. The existing dwelling is not dimensioned, however dotted lines indicate where existing walls are to be demolished, and the plan is annotated with reference to the legend, telling the correct procedure and methods for work to be carried out. Carport roof plan: In this drawing a part of the roof covering is removed to show the roof structure. The drawing is annotated to a legend, which gives the specifications for the size of the members and other structural components and the centers they fall at etc. Sections: The sections on this drawing show relevant cross-sectional and longitudinal cuts through the carport. All of the structural components are clearly shown: the footings and their sizes, the composite posts, bearers, rafters, purlins and roof sheeting. From the section it is clear as to how the structure will be assembled. Street elevation: A streetscape shows the visual impact of the new work from the street. This indicates how much effect it will have on the neighbors and whether the structure fits into the context etc.

-02-02 This drawing is a continuation of the first drawing of the set, as all of the drawing components could not fit on one page. The specific components that make up this drawing are: o Sections, o Elevations. Sections: These sections are taken through the existing structure and show the detailing and impact of the new work on the existing structure. They show the new openings in the interior walls and the new kitchen unit, as well as the new windows and doors in the background. Elevations: The south elevation shows the new openings and fenestration on the façade, accompanied by annotations to the legend, annotations which would not have been clear in section. The other elevations show views of the new carport, and the impact it has on the existing dwelling.

o CPUT 2nd year architectural technology

B273 Miller Road, Claremont -05-01 The drawings were prepared to serve as documents for tenders, with the intent of providing sufficient detailed information suitable for accurate costing and construction of the proposed work. These drawings are for the Client, but more importantly for the tenders, who will provide quotations for the required work as shown by the drawings. The architect would then select the most appropriate quote(s), and present a total figure of the building cost to the Client. This specific drawing is a reference drawing: a drawing which gives an overview of the project and is selected from the council submission plans. The drawing should not be presented in any other way, minor changes like the layout may change, but the scale of the drawings and the specific information on the page should be presented as shown: Each component of the drawing must be titled clearly and appropriately, with a drawing name and scale. The scale should only be shown on one drawing component if all of the components on the page are the same scale, to avoid unnecessary repetition. For tender drawings, a scale of 1:50 is most suitable, as it shows more detail than the 1:100 drawings required for council, which results in more accurate costing with less hidden costs. The orientation must be indicated by a clear north point, and should be relative to a site or floor plan. All new work on plan view drawings must be fully dimensioned and annotated. The site plan must always have fully dimensioned boundaries and have dimensions between the structure and the boundaries/building lines for the purpose of checking that it falls within regulations and for when setting out.

Space for the signatures of the owner and architect, and the date of when the drawing is to be signed. Once the drawing is signed by owner, architect and is approved by council, it becomes a legal document.

The specific components that make up this drawing are: o Site plan, o Ground floor plan, o Elevations. Site plan: The site plan shows the specific unit in question on a sub-divided plot, which was divided into 4 separate ervin. It shows that the garage roof is shared with the neighboring unit, and it shows the position of the new combined-private-sewer and carriageway crossing. It shows all the structures of the adjoining ervin, and shows the streets as well as the distance to the next drainage cover. Ground floor plan: Shows the general dimensions of the structure and the organization of the spaces within. It also shows the drainage and storm water, existing boundary walls of adjoining ervin and existing trees which are to be protected. Elevations: Give a general picture as to what the completed structure would look like, with annotations to boundary lines and existing walls.

-05-02 Ground and first floor plan: These drawings show accurate dimensions of the entire new structure, indicate all the waste and soil pipes, as well as specify where they are required to be encased in concrete, and the storm water channel and pipes to outlet. Arrows on stairs always go up, and the numbers in the section lines refer to page numbers for the related drawings. Windows and doors are numbered in a way that each window or door can be easily related to in the window and door schedule. At 1:50 every component, fixture and fitting in the structure is clearly shown and it was made sure that nothing was left out.

-05-03 Roof and ceiling plan: Portions of the roof are removed to reveal and explain the structure. Annotations to a specific legend make the drawing clear. The garage roof has a separate drawing to show the waterproofing and downpipes in more detail, as the main drawing was becoming cluttered. The mirrored ceiling plans indicate where ceilings will be installed and where the cornice will follow.

-05-04 Sections: The most important drawing next the floor plans, the sections very clearly show how the structure gets put together. They also indicate the floor to floor levels of the structure and have specific details circled for a more detailed view on following drawings. The list of detailed specifications is also on this drawing, making it a key drawing in the set.

CPUT 2nd year architectural technology

-05-05 Elevations: The elevations show a detailed façade; from the Juliette balcony, fenestration as per catalogue, air bricks, up to the flashing on the roof, every line serves its purpose and indicates the desired finished product. The codes below the windows refer to the Alpha Omega catalogue and dotted lines show the structure behind the walls.

-05-06 Foundation and boundary wall plan: The size and position of each footing and foundation wall are clearly shown, illustrating the desired structure and allowing for an accurate costing of materials to be made. The existing and new common/adjoining footings that must be considered are also shown, as well as drainage so that when the structure gets built, the builders know where to lay the pipes and cast around existing footings beforehand. Details for the boundary wall construction are clear, so the boundary wall can be included in the tender’s costing, and not be left out becoming a hidden cost at the end of the day.

-05-07 Patio plans, sections and elevations: Separate drawings were made for the patio so that they could be sent off to specific tenders for quotes on the timber required of the pergola and the materials for the braai.

-05-08 Handrail details: The handrail drawings are at a scale of 1:25. They serve to accurately show the size and shape of the desired handrail, which can then be quoted for and manufactured to spec without question.

-05-09 Details: The 1:10 detail drawings show the specific details circled in the sections drawing; 1:100 copies of the sections are at the bottom of the page as a reference to the area which the detail in question relates to. The annotations to the details are numbered as to keep the drawings clutter free, and the details indicate how the structure should be built very specifically. The detail drawings are more for the builder than for the tenders.

-05-10 Bathroom layouts and elevations: The 1:25 bathroom layouts show the position of sanitary fixtures and the desired tiling layout with the setting out points. The 1:50 elevations are sufficient to show the position of fixtures and tiling layouts for the walls. The shaded shapes are the combination of tile areas on each wall; this was

drawn because the drawing program we use calculates the area of any single shape, so a total tiled area figure was acquired without tedious calculation.

-05-11 Kitchen layout and elevations: The 1:25 layout clearly shows all of the desired fixtures and appliances, while dotted lines indicate structure below the countertops. The drainage is also shown on this drawing, making it clear as to what the waste pipes are servicing. The elevations are also at a scale of 1:25, allowing detailed joinery of the built in cupboards to be clearly visible.

-05-12 Paving layout: The paved and tiled areas are annotated, with the direction of the fall indicated. The fall usually falls away from the building, but in this case it falls towards the building so that water can run into the storm water channel and drain to the outlet in the road. The paving is also shown to be paved a set distance around the existing tree which is to be protected.

-05-13 Door & window schedule: An elevation of each door/window is shown, fully dimensioned, with the respective codes relating to the Alpha Omega catalogue, number relating to the floor plans, descriptions and amounts required. The hatch to the store is the only door that needs to be custom made, whereas the sliding and pedestrian gate have to be made up by Oriental Arts.

CPUT 2nd year architectural technology

B376 Wesley Road, Claremont -02-01 This drawing was prepared for submission to the local authorities (council), with the intent of receiving permission to build the additions and alterations as proposed in the drawing. Should the drawing be approved by council, it will serve as a legal document. This drawing is for the Client, who requested architectural drawings for a new first floor addition/alteration to an existing house he had recently purchased. The drawings should be presented as shown, minor changes like the layout may change, but the scale of the drawings and the specific information on the page should remain as is: Each component of the drawing must be titled clearly and appropriately, with a drawing name and scale.

The specific components that make up this drawing are: o First and ground floor plans, o Sections and o Elevations. First and ground floor plans: The first floor plan shows the total area of the proposed new addition, and also shows where the existing first floor and structure (dotted) are. The thin walls represent lightweight timber stud frame walls, and the new drainage from the first floor connects to the existing drainage below. Annotations referring to a legend indicate specific detailing/requirements, and a dash-dot line shows the new roof covering. The ground floor plan shows the existing dwelling which we measured on site, and dotted line represents the existing walls, where a new opening is to be formed, and RC staircase to be removed. The line of the building above is clearly indicated in thick dotted line. Sections: The many sections each show key structural components which must be considered for the new first floor addition. Thick dotted lines show where the very low existing roof is to be removed. Each section shows the timber construction of the new first floor, lightweight walls and handrails. The annotations to the legend are very specific as the new structure has to meet the SANS requirements. Elevations: The elevations show the detailed façades of the new lightweight first floor addition; the Nutec boarding is shown on the drawing, the new drainage and downpipes and detailed fenestration with codes referencing to the Alpha Omega catalogue.

-02-02 This drawing is a continuation of the first drawing of the set, as all of the drawing components could not fit on one page. The specific components that make up this drawing are: o Site plan, o Roof plan and o a section. Site plan: The site plan shows the area covered by the new addition. The coverage of the dwelling doesn’t change but the bulk does as there is now more floor area inside the dwelling. All of the site dimensions to the oddly shaped site ate also shown, as well as the distance to the nearest crossroad. Roof plan: Portions of the roof are removed to reveal and explain the structure. Annotations to a specific legend make the drawing clear. Sections: This section is more of a sectional elevation, as it cuts through the existing structure and shows the new structure in elevation. Structure behind the walls in elevation is shown in dotted line.

The specific components that make up this drawing are: o First and ground floor & site plans, o Sections and o Elevations. First and ground floor plans: The ground floor plan shows a base drawing of the existing structure, and is combined with the site plan as the site is small and the structure covers most of the site, an additional site plan is not required. Dotted line on the plan indices a new beam above and access hatch in the ceiling with a pull-down loft ladder. The first floor plan shows the new lightweight timber stud frame walls as well as the brick party wall, with full dimensions required for the structure. Dash-dot lines show the new roof and dormer windows. Sections: The sections show key structural components which must be considered for the new first floor addition. Thick dotted lines show where the existing roof is to be removed. Each section shows the timber construction of the new first floor, lightweight walls and handrails. The RC floor slab and ‘I’ beam which catches the timber floor joists are shown in the cross section. The annotations to the legend are very specific as the new structure is very intertwined with the existing. Elevations: The elevations show the detailed façades of the new lightweight first floor addition; the Nutec boarding is shown on the drawing and detailed fenestration with customized dormer windows.

CPUT 2 year architectural technology

B357 21 Princes Road, Claremont -02-01 This drawing was prepared for submission to the local authorities (council), with the intent of receiving permission to build the additions and alterations as proposed in the drawing. Should the drawing be approved by council, it will serve as a legal document. This drawing is for the Client, who requested architectural drawings for a new first floor addition/alteration to an existing house. The drawings should be presented as shown, minor changes like the layout may change, but the scale of the drawings and the specific information on the page should remain as is: Each component of the drawing must be titled clearly and appropriately, with a drawing name and scale.

A new timber staircase is shown, with the arrow leading up, and the beams above are indicated in dotted line. Elevations: The elevations show the detailed façades of the new lightweight first floor addition; the Nutec boarding is shown on the drawing and detailed fenestration with customized dormer windows.

o o CPUT 2nd year architectural technology

B315 Princes Road, Claremont -04-01 b This drawing was prepared for re-submission to the local authorities (council) as a rider plan to the approved plan, with the intent of receiving permission to build two additional units as proposed in the drawing. Should the drawing be approved by council, it will serve as a legal document. This drawing is for the Client, who requested changes to the architectural drawings with gaining more units for the development in mind. The drawings should be presented as shown, all changes should be indicated and the drawings and the specific information on the page should remain as is: Each component of the drawing must be titled clearly and appropriately, with a drawing name and scale. The scale should only be shown on one drawing component if all of the components on the page are the same scale, to avoid unnecessary repetition. For this drawing, a set of grid lines was essential as they indicate where the structure rests. The grid was not labeled at first, and the structural engineer assumed that they did not exist, and thereafter drew his own grid lines which were completely unrelated to the structure. After the problems caused by that the grid lines were clearly marked. A project number relative to the architect’s referencing system should also be present in the title block, o A description of the drawing components on the page,

The correct date, scale, who the drawing was drawn by, the registration number of the professional responsible for the drawing and the logo of the architect/firm. Space for the signatures of the owner and architect, and the date of when the drawing is to be signed. Once the drawing is signed by owner, architect and is approved by council, it becomes a legal document.

Site plan: The site plan is at a scale of 1:200, and clearly shows the proposed new work against the approved plan. The retaining wall on the parking level had moved and is indicated on the site plan by a dotted line. Parking layout: The parking layout had changed significantly after the engineer went off on a tangent with regards to the structure. The columns supporting the building above were too close together to allow for sufficient parking space, and support walls also obstructed the parking bays. These problems were fixed and the changes against the approved plan are marked by ‘bubbles’.

-04-02 b Ground floor plan: The ground floor plan shows the two additional units added, and as the units’ structure falls on the grid lines, they are not dimensioned individually, as the dimensions are on the grid lines and the units’ layouts are repetitive. Sections: Importantly, the sections also show the respective grid lines, making it clear that the structure lies on the grid. They show vertical dimensions and the change from timber to concrete for the attic floors.

-04-03 b First floor plan: In addition to the introduction of the extra units, the first floor plan had changes to all the units’ layouts, and were annotated accordingly. Attic floor plan: In addition to the introduction of the extra units and the changing of all the units’ layouts, the dormer windows had also moved slightly. The structure below the attic floor is shown in dotted line.

-04-04 b Roof plan & drainage: Now that the dormer windows had moved, the roof structure also changed slightly. The drainage sections also had the two additional unit’s drainage added on.

-04-05 b Elevations: The elevations show the proposed addition, however, the grid lines were removed from this drawing to avoid confusion and having to make additional unnecessary changes.
