WEAVING OF LIGHT GARDEN
OUTDOOR DINING, COURTYARD
Weaving from interior to exterior, the light and tulle invites both the guests and Sofitel’s employees to the nature. Inspired by the Chinese landscape philosophy, the garden is where internal and external exchanges take place, leading the occupants to a new realm and enriching a forward-looking interpretation of the French concept joie de vivre.

COURTYARD, Daytime and Nighttime
SOFITEL’s debut Shanghai hotel seamlessly merges French elegance and forward-looking concept of “Joie de Vivre” with local heritage to mark the brand’s 60th anniversary.
Nestled in the French Concession, the design combines Chinese lantern art with Sofitel’s signature candle ritual and French architectural elements, delivering a contemporary experience tailored to Gen Z’s aesthetic across lighting, materials, space planning and experience. Utilized Sofitel’s brand connections with florals to create a sustainable design that brings our guests closer to nature, the overall design creates a distinctive and inviting stay, making it a timeless, memorable, and unique landmark hotel for all aesthetics seekers and visitors from various culture backgrounds in the future.

02 LAYERING OF TIME
“Place is never completely effaced.” —Marc Augé
Layering, as a verb, transcends mere erasure but builds new layers upon it, acknowledging the past transitions, and contemplating its potential permanence. The thesis aims to create an architectural response to translate the meaning behind the rebirth and transformation of material, and the emotion beyond blank temporal spaces.

and Existing
Brick and fabric are the symbols of both past and ongoing existence for a fading industrial building formerly used for dying fabric and producing hats during the 1800s in Beacon, NY. The project suggests that these two materials will be permanently integrated and replaced by the users themselves, who embody the emotions and essence of the site, thus perpetuating the building's ongoing transformation.

An echo in time— resonates with the past, embraces the present, and leave reflections to the future.
The space is a living reflection of the Bowery’s transformation of time, where the stories and memories of the area are echoed in the design, art, and community interactions.
The project’s mission is to celebrate the transformation of time, showcase the Bowery history, and to promote community gatherings and interactions. Specifically, the project will utilize upcycling and creativity to rebuild the sense of belonging on the Bowery which comes from personal feelings of a lack of interaction walking in the region. Derived from the elevated railroad track on the Bowery during 1800s, the tracks are not only utilized as functional structure for transporting abandoned materials,, but also a bridge that connects the eliminated past and present.

In addition to serving the needs of this Brooklyn neighborhood, the subject of “banned books” and the freedom to read will drive the reimagination of the Arlington branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. The project’s muse and conceptual driver is the 1966 film Fahrenheit 451. The feeling of hiding the deep desire to read books despite the attempt of the authorities to subdue this desire is translated into the visual perception and experience of being in this library.
In order to incorporate the banned books as the priority in the library, the shelves with banned books are utilized not only as the container of knowledge but also as the divider and bridge that connects all of the programming in the library.

The Living Futures Institute works to educate the public and the building industry in particular about sustainability and wellness issues, while their mission statement is to reconcile humanity’s relationship with the natural world. While bookstore, exhibition space and digital display introduce the company culture and their understanding of nature to the public, Material Lab and Fabrication Lab provide opportunities to experience and understand the process. Wayfinding is provided for the public to guide occupants through the 3 communities.
