Reviving the Rust Belt Project Type: Civic Commons Thesis Project Date: Spring 2020 Revit Photoshop InDesign AutoCAD Architectural Research

Project Information: Syracuse has had a decline in its economy since the shift of globalization; factories that used to be vibrant are now abandoned, the city’s current biggest income is from the hospitals and medical centers. This shift in the environment has hit the region with job decline, and thus the majority of students that come to visit Syracuse for school will not stay. This has created a cycle of that citizens found themselves in, the lack of job opportunities, impacts the lack of talent for job market, which leads to the lack of consumers, and then back to lack of business to support the cities infrastructures. How can an interior design project be able to take the economical conditions into consideration, and create something that can further establish a sense of belonging for communities?

Site Choice Explanation: The Galleries of Syracuse is an iconic part of the downtown city skyline. The building is closely integrated with Downtown Syracuse and is an essential part of the business community. The Galleries creates a professional atmosphere in Downtown Syracuse that is extremely beneficial to the economic development of the city.

Since the site has such an active history, with the canal’s purpose quieting down, a “moving” sculpture in the form of a fountain that not only let the activeness of the area live on but also continues in the same form of element as water. Not only does the fountain effectively fills the space without cluttering, it also makes a significant contribution to the “animation of the Square, to provide texture, sound and a source of passive enjoyment” (The Academy of Urbanism, 2018).

The canal-side basin area that used to be where the horses that pull the boats on the canals would rest, is now made into a public “park” that features a turf seating surface that make up an amphitheater for the public to enjoy the canal.

Downtown Syracuse is the center of most local entertainment and activities, with many restaurants, bars, and event centers to offer.

Adjacently located is the neighborhood with a higher crime rate on N. Salina Street.

With this in mind, the goal of the project is to bring together both sides of Syracuse, and help lower crime rate by keeping people active around these streets.

Design Decision: The Hydroponic Community Garden is located on the backside of the auditorium steps. This is the side that will receive more sunlight, and with the architecture, more surface area is available for planting.

The plants also softens the geometric shape of the auditorium, bringing nature inside. This creates a dramatic visual interest, especially on the harshest winter day.

Auditorium sits in the darkest corner of the floor plan. This allows minimal glares in the LED screen, and more control for artificial stage lighting.

An auditorium without the traditional “chair seats”, unassigned seating allows more flexibility for what the space is capable of hosting.

It also allows for easier seating arrangements for families or larger gatherings.

Flexible space for artist market set up. This allows for early morning flea markets, farmers markets, or even weekend events. No permanent installation means that the space is open to allow the workers to continue to use this entrance without disruption.

Project Type: Workplace Design Date: Fall 2018 Revit Photoshop InDesign Enscape Brand Strategy

Project Information: In the design brief given by Steelcase, information regarding the chosen site and client’s needs are given. The proposed client of this project is “Next”, a real estate global firm looking to design a new office location in Denver, Colorado.

The goal of this design is to have flexible seating options for the employees, to represent both the firm’s global culture and Denver’s local culture, and to attract younger generations and stay fresh with their clients.

Site is 1445 Market St., 12,550 sf.

Concept Statement: The design of the space is intended to facilitate a sense of community between individuals, creating a place that is warm and engaging for all its occupants through the openness within the floor plan and carefully curated materials. The dynamics within the space are designed to help people flow through naturally while doing their daily tasks. The efficient spatial and lighting design not only satisfies occupants’ wellbeing, but also sets a high standard representing what the clients may expect from Next. The company’s human-centered culture is displayed by designating a space for educational use that showcases the artwork of local artists in Denver, both to the employees and to the public.

Project Information: In the neighborhood of North Syracuse, the demographic has changed drastically in the recent years due to immigration. This project aims to revitalize a central area of the neighborhood by inviting all families and communities to come together in a modern, international styled cafe & restaurant. This is a collaboration project between four students.

Concept Statement: This design promotes a welcoming cafe with an unpolished and rustic feel. The materials integrated explore texture and natural colors while embodying modern and traditional design elements. The space emphasizes bringing the outside in and incorporating biophilia. The layout proposes a wide variety of seating that are composed of neutral materials with subtle and soft color to allow users to feel calm and comfortable throughout the space.

TV Broadcast Set Design Proposal Project Type: Set Design/Workplace Photoshop InDesign AutoCAD Cinema4D FF+E

Project Information: TV broadcast set design project that transforms an office space in Dubai into an ultra-modern, sophisticated workspace that is suitable for broadcast. Collaborating with senior designers, I was able to contribute to ideation, FF+E selection, graphics and rendering touch-up in Photoshop, as well as designing presentations for client meetings.

Halt Homelessness Project Type: Shelter re-design Photoshop InDesign Revit

Project Information: A collaboration project that involved senior leaders within Gensler, as well as the class of interns. We targeted San Francisco’s major homelessness issue, visited several local shelters, and completed a design proposal as part of an initiative to bring more attention and efforts to possible solutions. I was responsible for the design, drafting, and rendering of one of the iterations in the final design.
