A Paradigm Retreat Project

Unit 212.2 Architecture BA2 A Retreat: Paradigm Project The project seeks to apply the principles identified from the paradigm study to a personal design, thereby, begining to establish a design approah or method. It is important to explore the use of carefully composed analytical diagrams as part of a design method. To understand how to analyse a site in order to produce a responsive and appropriate architecture. To engage with design on a sloping site and to produce a sectionally responsive architecture. To engage in pursuit of an integrated and cohesive architecture.

The chosen site to desgin a Retreat project is situated on a beautiful wooded site near Romsey. Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is an arboretum comprising 72 hectares accommodating over 42,000 trees and shrubs in about 12,000 taxa, notably a collection of oaks, camelia, magnolia and rhododendron. This design will demonstrate the understanding of an architectural approach to designing a building within a particular slope landscape. This project is to find a solution that responds precisely to the activity that is to be undertaken at the chosen site, and which fulfills all the requirements, as well as showing a clear architectural intent and rigour, and is inspirational. It is to introduce to an acknowledged way of carrying out the design of all the subsequent architectural projects, in order to develop a cosistent working design method.

The place gives an impact for a Retreat project, where visitors could get a short holiday within Hamsphire or from the nearby big cities.

It is a place where people comes to enjoy the beautiful gardens and as well as pamper themselves to the proposed Retreat project.

This could not only attract more locals and tourist, it could create new job opportunites around the area and an interesting venue for weddings and gatherings.

Since it is surrounded by beautiful trees in the landscape, a strong concept to tie up the Retreat is to introduce a tea ceremonial space.

Where United Kingdom is well known for its tea. A place to celebrate it in the Retreat it is just like a hidden gem, where people would go there for sharing ideas and knowledge about teas from local to all around the world. From there, it is a place to go for customers relax or reflect from their busy life.

A Boatyard Design

Unit 202.2 Architecture BA2 A Boatyard The project seeks to address the issues outlined above by providing a boatyard with viewing gallery, a learning centre, a cafeteria and shop which will attract visitors and contribute to the regeneration of the Camber Harbour area. The new project will be a much needed and prominent focus on the site and it is viewed by the client, the City of Portsmouth, as a public building. It must also satisfy many functional requirements and the following issues will be amongst those addressed in students’ design work and discussed in the studio: The boatyard will be a two storey height space with a main ground floor area for boat building and an access gallery on the upper floor.

The gallery is for access to the upper parts of boats under construction and may also be used, at times determined by the boatyard, as a public viewing gallery to display the craftsmanship and product of the yard.

The project is located in an area of Old Portsmouth known as the Camber, originally a sand and shingle bar which formed a natural harbour. Present-day Portsmouth owes its existence to the Camber, which in prehistory provided shelter and food for our ancestors.

Throughout history Camber Harbour has been a busy, well protected port and the site and its surroundings have been a dockyard, a fishing harbour, a coal depot and an array of warehouses. Today, the structures on the project site are the utilitarian sheds of a wholesale and retail fish merchant and a boat storage company (KB Boat Park), the Bridge Tavern pub and the remainder of the site is occupied by the boat storage company’s hardstanding (and slipway) and a car park.

The site is generally characterised by utilitarian dockside structures and facilities which do not exist within a cohesive, attractive urban realm. Aside from the pub the site is occupied by functions which offer no public face and no opportunity for the public to take advantage of the attractive location and views. In the wider context you will find the Isle of Wight ferry port and the Gunwharf Quays mixed-use development, a working fishing harbour, private boat moorings, residential developments and nearby bars and restaurants.

Connectivity between the site and the surroundings is poor and lacks legibility.

Urban Hosuing Planning

AB 317 Architectural Design Studies 3A To live/ To work: Urban Housing Planing The project is expected to individually develop a multi-use urban housing proposal within the framework of the strategic response. Each project shall house 40-60 individuals, in a rich mix of housing types appropriate for the proposed user groups. The numbers of the units to be provided on each site, the expected user groups and the exact individual unit breakdown is a matter for each individual student to resolve, in tandem with the ethos of the design workgroup. Projects should be developed through the exploration of the site strategy, massing, context, construction and economics.

The programme requires that the urban housing typology be speculative. As part of the development of the brief, through analysis of specifics of the broader site, its history and culture, you might suggest a specific group that your speculative housing might attract, and design accordingly to suit their expectations of lifestyle and quality.

An immediate constraint in real terms is always budget, where cost per square meter often rules. As an initial guide to this budgetary constraints, you should establish typical floor areas for current housing developments, and, by relating these to current market values, establish a typical current cost per metre squared. Any significant variation from these figures should be justified through appropriate analysis and associated realisation of the design itself and mitigating argument regarding relative value.

A Boat Race Design

AB 318 Architectural Design Studies 3B To Play : An Under-graduate Thesis The thesis is require to fully explore the Project themes of ‘Performance’ and ‘the City’. You would have to undertake informed architectural research at the outset of the Project. The type of investigation will vary depending on the thesis to be explored and could take many forms.

It is to to require to choose a wasted space in the city which matches your passion in the performance. The chosen site would be below the M8 Kingston Bridge, which is less then 5 minutes’ walk to the destination from Anderson Railway Station.

A potential thesis proposal for the performance in the city is celebrating the clyde river in Glasgow, by introducing a boat racing club. This would benefit the local Universities and Colledges in Glasgow. Boatracing club members from the universities could practice along the clyderiver. To create this new attraction not only for the club members and audiences on boat racing day, but it is also to allow locals and tourism to view Glasgow in a new perspective from the clyde river.

The architectural concept for the boat racing is to suspend from below the M8 to give stability to the floating architecture, to against the river current. The shape of the building is inspired by the river tide movement that flows through the clyde river. The architecture form that was generated from the tide movement created an architectural form linkage that resulted a pathway for pedestrians to cross from North and South river bank of Glasgow.

2.2 AB 419 Architectural Design Studies 4A To Care : A Hospice The project seeks to feasibility study looks into a possible future hospice development in Govan, Glasgow. With the hospice movement becoming increasingly popular in cities. It is important to create a responsive design that interact with both the users and surrounding area int his instance. Govan House is looking to create a 10 bed hospice for 16-24 years olds with day centre facilities within the area of Govan.

Children with life-threating or life-limiting conditions now live into young adulthood due to advances in medical care. The need to respite care to extend beyond children’s services is important to meet the individual needs of these young people. The journey to adulthood itself can be uncertain and because of illness young people and their families can be faced with many challenges. Young adults require a unique engagement from staff that is not otherwise offered in adolescent or adult services. A transitonal stage between these servieces is therefore required. The new facility is to provide support for young adults in a manor that suits their age group. The hospice is to provide care centred on privacy, dignity and independence, with an emphasis on promoting social interaction.

Young adults are able to come to newhospice for respite visits. These visits are available throughout the year and can be booked to suit the needs of the young person. Avisitor may potentially stay for a couple of days, and at other times they may choose to visit for a whole week. Each young person is offered 14 nights respite each year. Young adults are provided with a home that allows them to find peace and solace through their difficult times, whether tthat be through the unique social environment of being with other palliative patients, or through sessions and workshops provided by the hospice. It is up to the individual to decide how they want to spend their respite visit but usually is a great opportunity to meet new people, try new things or relax, where someone who could relate with them and exchange what’s their life experience. Visitors usually book their respite in advance, but if an emergency occurs, emergency support will be offered if parents or partners wish to stay, while a young person visits. A self-contained flat for families to use, should therefore be considered.

2.2 AB 419 Architectural Design Studies 4B To Care : Bath House The project concerns the design of a Bath House, to be sited within a selected masterplan of the District of Govan, to the west of the City of Glasgow.

Public Baths originated from a communal need for cleanliness, becoming incorporated into the social system as meeting places.

Bathing is the washing or cleansing of the body, with its principle purpose for personal hygiene, however it is also a preventative measure to reduce the incidence and spread of disease.

The elaborate rituals, and the resultant architecture, served as precedents for later European and American Baths facilities, with their modern equivalent becoming a synthesis of library, art gallery, mall, restaurant, gym, and spa. Having demonstrated a more humane approach to public buildings from your previous design, you should consider how to modify and manipulate the brief you have been set, to establish an exemplar centre for bathing within the formal park structure of your site. Through research and intense investigation, a proposal of a new paradigm for bathing on the chosen site in Govan, the River Clyde, the City of Glasgow and the culture of healing with water itself.

To create an iconic building in Govan with the support of Riverside museum, where, visitors from the locals to tourism will come and rejuvanate Govan. It will be a great meet up place, where the traditional way of a bathouse, is for the people to meet and have a business meeting or to hang out. To enchance the environmental site for the proper tourism development, where you have a bathouse and community learning centre. To assist in the revitalization of economy thorugh new creation of jobs and employment for new investments. To assist the local with the fast growing tourism sector in Glasgow, by bringing them to Govan.

Luke Lim Kok Yong & Yuna Lee Yun Ying 5A: Thesis Inception Unit 1: Studio E.A.R.T.H. The legacy of the Grand Tour explores one of the humanity’s most ancient roads. Before the civilization itself emerged, the pathways of Grand Tour served the prehistoric people as routes using, which they settled in Europe. This route played a humongous part in the history of humanity since the ancient civilizations of Europe used it to travel and trade with different continents that was discovered by exploration. The world started to globalize by sharing knowledge, technology, culture, and religion. This shared legacy has become the groundwork for today’s globalized world. Bit by bit, the world was taking its present appearance and through discoveries, what was previously thought to be impossible have become possible. Now, due to the interconnected world, we are able to learn and travel freely, to share knowledge and technology. This allowed us to progress at a fantastic rate and react to any global changes lightning fast.

Through further progress of technologies, we will be able to voyage through space between the planets and even stars. Where numerous resources will be found through space voyaging and exploration. To revitalized our economy through space industry, job opportunities, investments and space tourism. Experiments from our own earth’s harsh environments could be carried out, furthering our knowledge of the cosmos. Where future generations could venture for space voyaging to see our earth and other planets.

What is now considered impossible will become feasible and even common in the future. However, space voyaging inevitably takes long periods of time. How will humanity answer this question? What will we do during long journeys in space? Will there be facilities in space exploration to create new knowledge and technology? Will this step be another milestone in our evolution? While we do not know all the answers, even now architecture can be used to investigate new possiblities in simulated space voyanging environments, and how humans will react and experience them.

Luke Lim Kok Yong & Yuna Lee Yun Ying 5B: Thesis Development Unit 1: Studio E.A.R.T.H. The origins of the Grand Tour in the 16th century was a fundamental part of education. Any individuals that wished to travel around the globe needed to understand the purpose of their exploration - to gain knowledge. The ‘Grand Tour’ still exists today, air travel has made it easier for individuals to explore different continents in a reasonable time. As technology advances even further, space travel becomes the most logical next steps in the legacy of the ‘Grand Tour Series’.Since this is a speculated prediction, the architecture sets the scene for the foundation of space education. The environment where our future space cadets experience during the ‘Grand Tour’ is one of the most important apects to consider. In order to optimize the gaining of an individual’s knowledge, there will be a series of key progressional spaces to symbolise growth: theoretical education, adaptation of the environment, assessing risk and improvisation, real life practice. These are the basics.The goal is to explore and expand on the space architecture in an innovative way. Provoking the public in a positive manner is a necessity for the future development of space voyaging.

Glasgow International Airport is a logical choice to develop a ‘Space Centre’. Paisley is located near the chosen site because it has a rich history of aviational development. The bigger purpose of the scheme is to set an example to the international stage by having Paisley as the starting point to the ‘Grand Tour’. The Space Station is one of the main concepts to the front face of the airport since it is the first stage of educational growth. It is also an opportunity for public explorers to develop the holistic architecture involved in space travel. Alongside the academy and the airport will be a series of spaces to represent exploration opportunities. It acts not only as a hub for solely space explorers but for the general public as well. The hybrid nature of the environment demands a flexible architecture that can create connections with one another. The study course for space cadets is to understand the basics of astrophysics, medicine, engineering, science, communication and leadership skills. If the space cadet qualifies, a grand ceremony will take place. This celebration does not mean the end, instead it means it is the beginning of their own personal ‘Grand Tour’ journey.

Awards & Achievements URA - Urban Redevelopment Authority The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to design the benches for the Street Furniture Design Project. Popular benches that the public votes for in an online contest could be replicated and made into permanent fixtures.

The bench project is one of three projects that the URA and Lasalle have collaborated on. The other two are themed facade decoration designs for the Marina Bay City Gallery, and outdoor posters which reflect the bay’s energetic vibe. Both design projects have already been installed and the designs will be rotated throughout the year. It is a great oppotunity to join this design programme to draw inspiration from Marina Bay and to translate it into creative designs for the area.

Forty entries were shortlisted from the more than 60 submissions before being whittled down to the final 10 by a panel of judges comprising six representatives from URA, the school and the furniture industry. They were selected based on their originality, functionality, durability and how easy they were to build.

FDA - Furniture Design Award The Furniture Design Award (FDA) is an annual furniture design competition organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC). It was first launched in 1993 as the Furniture Design Competition and was renamed FDA in 2003. The Award aims to uncover budding design talents and be a reputable showcase for the unique creations of the world’s best creative minds.

Increasingly, the Award has become a platform for exchange and networking amongst furniture manufacturers and designers internationally.

A project of SingaPlural — an annual design festival in March which showcases the best design elements from the multi-faceted creative spectrum of advertising, architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, as well as interior, furniture, graphic and fashion design — the FDA is held in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore/ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/ AFS), one of Asia’s premiere furniture trade shows.
