Interweaving Landscape with Auditoria Learning from the natural forms of a dune and wood rings, this performing arts center embraces a large public surface of interweaving linear paths with undula�on. There is no rigid boundary between the auditoria and the routes for access; con�nuous paths invite visitors from the street to the lobby, the lobby to an aisle, and eventually to the water edge and adjacent Boston Harborwalk. The linear landforms meet each other at mul�ple points and offer infinite possibili�es of circula�on on the site, with clues for interac�on between the people in the auditoria and the outside amphitheater.

The landform of a dune shows consequences of ridges, cliffs, and plateaus which emerge from and die into one another, diversifying a con�nuous surface that people can walk all over. Similarly, the form of wood rings shows clear “rings” that remain con�nuous while being gradually distorted and �lted. I adopted this highly complex but clearly navigable forms to this project site. The site is located at the �p of Boston waterfront area, and the two auditoria and an outside amphitheater are con�nuously connected with variously undula�ng paths which allow mul�ple access routes and offer a unique view at each point of the site. Inside theaters are accommodated under two large roofs which correspond to the surrounding large scale industrial buildings.

Instead of conven�onal stairs and corridors as the access to a theater, mul�ple paths on and under the landform lead visitors from the street to their seats. To enable such spontaneous circula�on, exterior and interior public spaces are con�nuous to the bowls of auditoria under the roof without fixed boundary.

The primary theater can be enclosed with movable par��ons, and when they are opened, audiences are directly connected to the street and the outside amphitheater. Performances on the amphitheater can be watched from both two auditoria with the water edge on the background.

New Communal: Networked Individuals In Maximum Density This project seeks for the densest way people can live in a city. The density is achieved not by imposing too li le privacy on residents, but through providing a flexible network among rooms to encourage various levels of commonality and maximize the efficiency of space, affordability, and residents' benefit.

The site Aylesbury Estate is located in London, where there is a pressing need for housing, especially in an affordable price range. In this project, both affordable and luxury units are composed of ‘private’ rooms and ‘communal’ spaces, both equipped with direct access from the public area. This arrangement allows a ‘private’ room to be the most affordable small unit with a possibility to be u lized as a part of a larger family unit or work-live unit.

The complexity of the network among private and communal spaces reflects today’s diverse lifestyles and gives flexible op ons for each individual. Compared to the hierarchical structure of tradi onal apartments which force everyone to adjust to an average type of a household, this block works as a flexible network of individuals which can be re-arranged every me people experience a change in their lives.

The studio referenced Haussmann blocks in Paris as a precedent of dense urban living blocks. I took a Haussmann block with a floor with two point access units as a reference, and examined its poten al for a flexible division of units for several tenants. While the courtyards of Haussman block provide light to the inner part of a block, the intersec ons of a building (fig.1) do not have light or access. Typical Haussmann housing uses these dark areas as access corridors or commercial spaces, which result in less efficiency and inconvenience of residents. I divided the block ver cally into three layers (fig.2) and u lized their dark areas as communal spaces facing terraces. Each of the three layers and terraces has a different living environment and provides mul ple choices of access to each part of the block.

6 types of units are designed for different types of lifestyles. The arrangement of private, communal, and ‘intermediate’ spaces allows a flexible boundary of families, housemates, and communi es.

Units on the lower layer offer a convenient se ng for work-live people with a close connec on to the streets, while the middle layer units encourage communal kitchens and terraces shared among residents. The higher layer units have the most private se ng, with a possibility to share facili es of other units. Each unit has private bedrooms and/or a kitchen opened to ‘intermediate’ space which can be used as almost a part of their private space if the residents open up their boundary.

Countryside: Ro erdam Study Abroad / Summer Research with AMO

Harvard GSD Spring 2017 Op on Studio / Summer Independent Study Advancing Defini on of the Countryside This studio was a part of a research project on "countryside" led by Professor Remment Koolhaas since 2016 for a planned exhibi on in 2019. I researched on popula on and migra on in the countryside as an introductory part of the exhibi on that explains the difference between rural and urban.

I visited four European rural villages with my teammate Ximena de Villafranca in the spring as a case study. We interviewed poli cians, scholars, NGOs, and local residents including migrants in those villages, and assembled those episodes, photos, bibliographic research, and our analysis into two books which explain countryside from two aspects: migra on sta s cs and case studies of migra on flows.

I proceeded to more in-depth research on popula on sta s cs and GIS in the summer as my individual study with AMO. I organized phone and skype interviews with eight organiza ons (United Na ons, NASA/Columbia University, World Bank, Eurostat, Facebook, Gates Founda on, and Harvard GSD) and compared their focused areas and methodologies to describe urban and rural through GIS mapping with their data sets. The comparison revealed a rapidly expanding interest and technologies on rural areas’ mapping. They are driven by both the humanitarian/academic reasons and as an investment for future market of tech companies. Maps on the le show two different technologies to detect human habita on from satellites.

While today almost any form can be digitally modeled and 3D printed, there are s�ll unsolved problems in making them of durable building materials on a large scale. This project is an explora�on of a method to give various complex forms to ceramics by a direct way from digital models.

”Paper Clay” is a technique which uses a mixture of slip (liquid clay) and paper or co�on pulp, which enables very thin and delicate shapes in ceramics art. We developed a method to use this technique with CNC-milled foam core as a mold. CNC milling allows a larger object to be formed as one piece in a quick and economical process. Compared to a standard process of making plaster molds by 3D printed originals, this method can efficiently materialize mul�ple varia�ons of geometry without redundant originals.

We exhibited the varia�on as a par��on with mul�ple apertures to let light penetrate. The surface of ceramics show textures given by the pulp and paper, which is a charm of natural materials that is hardly obtained by usual digital fabrica�on. The method needs more prac�ce to give the desired shape to the final product. However, in a successful condi�on of firing thin ceramic components transmit light in addi�on to the apertures, which we believe to be a great poten�al of this material.

This project is another attempt to materialize complex digital geometry as a tangible object. We analyzed the forms of concept cars and designed an object using some elements of the car bodies. My team focused on the smooth curves characteristic to some cars and attempted to develop the geometry to fabricate of aluminum panels.

To develop the complex forms with double curvatures, we divided a surface with its maximum curvature lines at intervals of about two inches, and then digitally unrolled those pieces and laser cut the flat slips. (In this process we utilized grasshopper components developed by Professor Andrew Witt.) By going through this process, I experienced many of common problems that we face in digital fabrication. The numbering of pieces and assembly required considerable manual work, and tectonic we choose to assemble the pieces caused some gap from the digital model. However, the pieces matched each other as we intended and I believe exploring such tectonics expands the possibility of complex geometries which are equally developable as simplified forms.

Inspired by the form of origami, this structure offers one of the simplest solu ons for a portable shelter. It can be folded flat and easily deployed into two forms of a shelter by infla ng an airbag a ached to the interior.

The beauty of origami lies in the minimal material and manipula on; just one piece of paper and simple ac on of folding create thousands of unexpected forms. My team analyzed origami pa erns such as waterbomb and V-fold and extracted the essen al unit of these pa erns. This folding unit can be unfolded by either elec ng the top triangular part or opening the ‘wings’ (two long parts.)

This means a small number of people can elect a shelter higher than one’s hight without using complicated tools.

For easy deployment, we a ached an air bag on the top part of the structure and inflated it with an inflator. Although the full-scale prototype experienced some unexpected difficul es such as too much load on certain parts of the origami panels, the geometric principle worked perfectly in this scale and the two stages of deployment gave us dynamic changes of form and the interior space.

In Tomioka Silk Mill, newly registered World Heritage Site in 2014, urgent repair of large part of the site and correspondence to rapidly increasing number of visitors were needed. The city planned the first conserva�on work of West Cocoon Warehouse and our team proposed opening our repair site to the public, sharing the progress of repair and research of the building. I was responsible for the design of this temporary building a�ached to the warehouse.

Dynamism in the World Heritage Increasing number of places are registered as World Heritage Sites in Japan and more and more people visit there each year. Although the preserva�on of the heritage is the essen�al part in management of those sites, con�nuous closure and the scenery of halfway repairs o�en disappoint visitors.

This project is a con�nuing a�empt to share the dynamic process of conserva�on of a historical heritage with public visitors, trying to enhance the history and add contemporary meanings to the site.

In front of this historical cocoon warehouse building, I proposed a three-storied temporary viewing deck with plain industrial elements which correspond to the exis�ng former silk mill factory. During seven years of the conserva�on work, visitors can take the whole view of the world heritage site through wide open windows on the third floor, and directly see the process of conserva�on in the workshop. I designed the facade with mesh sheets, very inexpensive material which penetrates light and air while covering the silver walls and windows which otherwise outstand from the exis�ng surroundings. With logotypes printed on the facade, this building serves like a temporary banner in front of the heritage.

Imagining the light filtrated through silk cloth

1. White mesh sheets covering the facade 2. Exhibi�on of the conserva�on work : Visitors can navigate with the �tles on the translucent tex�le and look down to the contents in the boxes to create a bright open interior space. Boxes are made of a common OSB board as the exterior wall substrate.

3. Logotype for the viewing deck : Chinese fonts were derived from an old ukiyoe pain�ng, while alphabets refer to type writers which French engineers used at this silk mill in the 19th century.

Exterior walls, windows and outdoor spaces are uniformly covered with white mesh sheets to give a simple appearance to the building. I designed a logotype of the viewing deck with fonts from the crea�on period of this silk mill, and �nted the characters with colors extracted from the original facade of hand made bricks. Common materials and colors were used for the exhibi�on as well as the building materials.

7 1. Visitors are asked to wear helmets with the viewing deck logo for safety reasons as well as to experience the working atmosphere of the site.

2. Brick Clone Bench : Our team 3D scanned the exis�ng brick wall of the warehouse and cast concrete in a 3D-printed mold to make a “clones” of the old wall. I designed a bench in the res�ng area for visitors to touch the texture.

Sharing the live process of conserva�on While the original state of the warehouse is not visible during the conserva�on work, this viewing deck offers an experience of watching the live process of dismantling the real roof �les and bricks right in front of the visitors. I planned the spaces to look at the workshop of conserva�on in various ways throughout the rout, including horizontal windows focusing on the roof and visitors’ pass way peeking into the interior of the warehouse.

Flexible signs and exhibi�on panels mocking construc�on bulle�n boards are planned to help managing the constantly changing situa�on of this facility.

Professional Work 2013 Pleasure from a Temporary Blank in a City A large vacant land has emerged at the very center of Tokyo, wai�ng for the future redevelopment. During the short period of vacancy, we planned a temporary open space u�lizing the remnants of former buildings and exterior structures.

This project is an experiment for a sustainable and pleasurable built environment in a rapidly changing city. As an architect for design development with a scheme design by Akihisa Hirata Architecture Office, I tried to materialize the simplest and playful form imagined by our team at the beginning.

I employed simple elements such as unfinished walls and ligh�ng equipment for temporary use, together with thinning lumber and cloth, which we would rarely use for permanent buildings.

These made it easy to flexibly keep up with quickly changing client’s plan and various enterprises involved in it while accommoda�ng a loosely united space for leisure. Because we planned to reconstruct these structures in another site a�er one year on this site, I made sure all the joints of the main buildings and pergolas can be dismantled easily. Resolving prac�cal demands and changes in design development and construc�on phase was essen�al to keep everything simple and s�ll organized.

Beer Hall and Clubhouse under construc�on

Structure model

Interior and Exterior with Exposed Structure The structure consists of the minimum number of detachable elements, to avoid the waste of resources and expenditure. We designed playful forms of steel and wood structure to add lively atmosphere using the only one dimension of beams and columns.

I designed the details for steel joints and selected the materials for roof and walls, collabora�ng with a steel manufacturer. I arranged the place of each support for the roof, to hide the bolts of beams’ joints in between the supports. We even made sure that all the bolts are fastened direc�ng upward (so that nuts are hidden from the below) to make an immaculate interior with bare materials.

Dormitory and Judo Hall in Meguro Professional Work 2012

Combining Complexity of a Building and the City In today’s residen�al areas in Tokyo, requirements for security, amenity, and privacy are increasing, some�mes making the area more monotonous and closed. I believe these requirements should be resolved by more sophis�cated means, not by elimina�ng different ac�vi�es from the area but by embracing liveliness and variety.

This project is an a�empt to combine elements of a mul�ple use of a building into one sophis�cated form that fits in the surrounding residen�al area. To make the ac�vity of athletes recognized by the neighborhood residents, we planned the judo hall faced to the main street with an open entrance hall in front of it and flexible circula�on routs. Through sound simula�ons and both technical and architectural solu�ons, the judo hall was connected to the entrance hall, so that athletes can feel fresh air and sunlight as if they used to do so during the training in small judo clubs in a tradi�onal town.

The building includes a judo hall, training facili�es, and dormitory rooms for athletes. The main facade consists of aluminum louvers which serve for eyesight control and as outer mullions of the curtain wall in the large entrance hall, designed to appear unified with the glass and aluminum handrails of small balconies of the dormitory rooms.

Collabora�ng with acous�c engineers, I designed porous sliding doors to u�lize the entrance hall as a buffering zone of sound, with adjustable panels for air supply. The air flows through the porous doors and is exhausted from the sound absorbing chambers in judo hall. Although the judo hall can be air-condi�oned with outlets on the floor and walls, athletes can manually control the air condi�on during training by opera�ng the doors and adjustable panels, according to their changing physical condi�ons.

To enable the open judo hall with fresh air and sunlight, it was necessary to control the noise, vibra�on, and eyesight. As well as the standard solu�on with vibra�on proof floors, ceilings, and sound absorbing wall panels, we installed porous wood doors and sound absorbing chambers in the wall for natural ven�la�on.

As a house for athletes, the interior employs rough yet pleasant natural materials to touch and feel with bare hands and feet. Stairs in the entrance hall are made of precast concrete and wood, supported by the structural concrete wall. Using Japanese cedar wood panels as the mold, the rich texture was added on the surface of the concrete wall.
