Based on preliminary research about city’s history and current social and physical living conditions this thesis addresses the topics of water bodies’ accessibility and use as well as considering potential development strategies.

An alternative approach to post-industrial river front development is showcased by an exemplary architectural project. The latter consists of two major types of interventions, namely the ones enabling natural environment along the river and the ones introducing human flow connections public activities to the newly rewilded areas.

Urban conditions analysis schemes

What if we didn’t have to sacrifice natural environment to development in our cities?

What if the city’s water bodies could be re-integrated into a larger ecosystem, maximizing micro-climatic effect as well as psychological benefit for the residents?

How can a post-industrial river front become an accessible public asset?

These questions are explored in this master thesis and local solutions are developed, which can be reproduced, multiplied and work within the whole city and beyond. Two different components, usually with distinct spatial separation are a focus of a design and research, namely natural environment and spaces for city residents. After analysing successful local practices of bringing nature to the urban watersides, an argument is made in favour of rewilding. It is proposed to dedicate as much area for nature as possible, so that with the time locally spread and suitable species can colonize free grounds creating a resilient and adaptable system.

The project was developed in the eighth semester. The topic was chosen independently based on an urban analysis.

Cultural value is an important part of urban development. In my opinion, buildings of this kind can have a great impact on people and change the image of the place where they are located. Thanks to state non-profit construction, it is possible to have a positive impact on people’s sense of community and to increase the general cultural level of the residential area.

The site is located in the central part of the new residential area near the river (backwater of the Dnipro) quite next to the pedestrian zone. Which is also a centre of the residential quarter.

During the urban analysis, it was determined that this district and the surrounding part of the city need a public place where people can meet and communicate with each other. Infrastructure and public services in the area need to be further developed.

Connectivity scheme

It was crucial to achieve convenient communication between areas within the building. The next important qualities are spaciousness and good natural lighting inside. Staying in the building is meant to make visitors feel comfortable so they are motivated to come back.

The functional distribution can be clearly seen in the plan. Courtyards and communications are created in the spaces (gaps) between volumes. The size of the building gives a possibility of using the «space within space» technique.

The rooms of the building are designed in such a way that they promote communication and interaction between people. From the central entrance, a visitor enters the lobby, which can also serve as an exhibition hall. Almost all other parts of the building are connected to this lobby.

The project has been developed during fourth semester as a part of a Bachelor program. During the process of planning a residential building, it was important to examine the spatial relationships and their effects on human perception of the environment. The goal was to create a conceptual project. Particular attention was paid to the architectural composition and the artistic expressiveness of the design. At the same time, functional zoning had to be considered.

The concept is to create a “common space” (living room) that integrates private spaces – bedrooms and other functional rooms. The outer image of “private” units is kept simple and solid in contrast to transparency of a living room. Thanks to the courtyard with a pond and plants, nature seems to penetrate the house.

The main idea of this concept is to create a “common space” (living room) that integrates private spaces – bedrooms and other functional rooms. Therefore, the space of the common room is divided into zones. Rooms for joint activities are connected to each other without doors or partitions. Panoramic glazing of the public areas of the building ensures a constant visual connection with the surrounding nature. In this way, the interior has a very strong connection with the outside.

Top 10 shortlist in an Ukrainian competition

The competition project was designed at the request of the postal company to create a convenient stop near the working terminal. The project needed to be implemented using cost effective materials and practical approach.

According to the brief, a concept was developed with an accent on lighting and users’ comfort (both mental and physical) as the stop would be frequently used by the employees during evening time.

Бічнийфасад,м1:100

The concept combines concise, practical, easy-tomaintain and construct forms with irregular elements. This small architectural form can be implemented relatively cheaply, but has its own distinct image.

The space of the bus stop is designed to encourage people to move in it, avoiding the supports and circular seating platforms. This creates the experience of adventure.

Glass panels protect against wind and dust, the building contains a lot of seats. Small tables, located on columns, were inspired by the mushrooms that grow on the trees. You can charge your mobile device on those or put a drink while waiting for a bus.

The project provides a warm waiting room relevant to the Kiev climate, and especially to the project location. Decorative metal panels create an additional visual separation of the station space from the surrounding area and add an extra element of irregularity, which strengthens the overall perception of the station.

Location: Connecticut, USA

Date of creation: 03.2023

This task was part of the master’s studio program. It was performed in a pair with another student. We have chosen to study the Beinecke library (built in 1963 in in New Haven, Connecticut, USA by SOM).

Development and creation of the models were done together in close discussion with the project partner. All the sketches presented below were done by me.

The aim of the model is showcasing the building’s inner space. However, with the taken case study, the materiality and facade shapes are also important for the overall effect on a visitor.

A center of the composition is actually hidden inside of a non-transparent volume. A book block is a focal point of the library that underlines its function. In order to show all the aspects mentioned above a concept for case study was created.

The two models consist of numerous sections which are put together like slices in order to form a 3-dimentional image of the building. Both models are identical in scale and size but are sliced in perpendicular directions. This allows to show all the sides and desired elements. By combining the impressions from the two objects one can get a comprehensive image of the spatial structure that is normally hidden within the library.

By being positioned diagonally on the podium, this piece encourages a viewer to move around experiencing the case study from different sides.

Location: Brussels, Belgium

Date of creation: 05.2023

The project was developed within a master studio Built Nothing. The studio emphasizes working with space. After analysis of a building context concept with three cylinders piercing building’s volume was chosen. Those volumes become a negative space that belongs to the city.

The studio has a black-and-white theme and emphasizes working with space. Modelmaking along with creating abstract simplified drawings were two of the key aspects of the approach to this project.

Siteplan in context

The site is located between the city park (South) and a courtyard of a school (North). The aim of the building’s ground level is to connect the two creating a comfortable pathway. Not only will this serve communication purposes but also get people in close contact with the library. A path through emphasizes openness and public character of the institution.

The building occupies maximal allowed volume and at the same time reserves some of the space within for the city. In the concept model, textured solids represent the empty space while all of the other volume of the cube is a boult matter. The project is built on the use of solid (the building) and void (cylinders, space for the city).

Conceptual model representing inverted space.

Small model in context

Small model in context was used to showcase the way the building works with the built environment.

Upper tilted cylinder lets sun beams in afternoon through so that they can reach the neighboring building. At the same time the voids function as light shafts bringing natural light into the interior.

Functional diagrams

Arrangement of the unbuilt within volume.

Fonctions: passage, vertical connection, public terraces. A void penetrated by a glass elevator.

Library functions are distributed across different floors. There is a clear distinction between publicly accessible areas (white) and closed, private rooms (black). Planning was done in such a way that each floor has a different composition thus visitors have a unique experience at each library department.

Facades are fully glazed with panels of different transparency (as seen on a big model). This gives an outer viewer an idea that something unusual is inside but at the same time keeps it obscure. With these means the person is interested in coming inside. Not all the inner elements are visible from the ground level, so moving inside the building will bring users unexpected discoveries.

Big model in scale 1:100 (size 35*35*30 cm)

Prioritizing the urban space, I designed the voids first. As all the cylinders are open, connected and can be used as a communication, a specific area is formed around them in the interior. This area is directly seen from the outside and has connections to it. This is how a specific open interior space emerges.

The ends of the tubes are not covered, so the inner space fully belongs to the city. In the end, a building itself is created around a shaped urban space. This provides distinctive spatial qualities.

Diagrams of spatial development

The voids are intersecting each floor in different places, concentrating public functions of the building around them. There is a direct communication between each cylinder and library’s interior.

Hand-drawn architectural details

Location: Brusseles, Belgium

Date of creation: 11.2022

The details were created as a part of a technical solution development. This task is a part of a university course.

Various technical aspects (ventilation, structure, lighting, energy performance etc.) were analyzed during the course. Multiple systems were integrated into a given building. The details are a part of documentation that was created to illustrate developed ideas.

Date of creation: 2019-2023

The following images were created as apart of bachelor, master study or independently using various techniques and are ranging from quick sketches to fully developed artistic projects.

All of the following images (including photographs) were created by me individually.

Sketches

A set of architectural setches. Color pens, pencil. Collage.

Sketching is an essential part of learning visual artistic techniques. Additionally it is a helpful tool for designing, conceptualizing and also for depicting existing situation on an architectural site. In addition to being a fast way of creating imagery, sketches can be drawn on a small formats with the help of various materials.

Still-life with persimmon. Soft pastel. Fresh blooms. Soft pastel.

Houses on the river edge. Bamberg, Germany.

Drawing was studied by me intensively both during preparation for the university and during my Bachelor studies.

Creating images using exclusively graphite pencil is a standard skill in academic art education.

A drawing of an element of a 16th century house in Mechelen, Belgium.

A quick sketch of a pigeon.

Printed graphics

Such works are created by making a print from objects, stencils, engravings etc. by covering those in print ink and/or oil paint and then running them with a piece of paper through special press.

This artistic project refers to how one explores the surrounding world through their own unique perception. Random unconnected moments leave traces in the memory, which later get combined into a bigger picture. In the polyptych each piece is unique and individual and yet it contributes to an overall image.

Unnamed. Polyptych. Linocut, monotype, engraving on cardboard.

The hills. Triptych. Linocut, monotype.

Texture and imperfections of prints of this kind are a unique feature of the technique. Making imprints of objects allows to depict them in an unusual way. An outcome is different from black-and-white picture or negative image.

Even with the use of the same stencil variation in outcoming images can be achieved by altering the amount and consistency of paint. This way there are never two identical imprints.

Birchwoods. Linocut.

Formal composition. Monotype.

Exploration composition rules within a given graphic technique. Created as a part of a study program.

The following works focus on depicting the interaction of nature of Kyiv with “the urban”. The city has quite a lot of greenery which inhabits the spaces together with humans and influences our feelings and comfort.

Imprints of leaves. Monotype.

Works of this series highlight the difference between shapes and textures of natural vs humanmade objects and showcase the role that natural forces have to play even within strictly def ined environments.

Poplar tree. Drypoint etching.

One of the most common trees on the city. Especially in quarters built in Soviet times.

Abstract ink drawings

These images are created using ink and pens or fine-liners.

The purpose of creating these drawings (mostly improvisationally) is to obtain a dynamic graphic composition.

The drawings are small in size (up to 13*18 cm max) and feature a high level of detailing.

Moelle Immense (book design)

A self-published book developed in collaboration with Caroline Giraud (the writer).

An image of the publication was generated on the basis of several factors like desired influence, target audience, practicality, manufacturing costs etc.

The book is printed using riso – a technology that prints each color as a separate layer allowing for wide color choice and high saturation. Riso printers leave unique texture and a layered image has a specific feel to it. This plays a huge role in character of the publication.

During the working process I have created files for printing sheets that later can be bent, stapled together and trimmed.

A book consists of 10 poems each of which has a unique illustration.

All the images have a common style and feature same 3 colors. Each illustration was produced using monotype in combination with drypoint printing, after which the piece was scanned and adapted for riso-printing.

A first run of 30 pieces was produced by me after finishing the layout phase.

Oil paintings

Paintings on wooden panel or canvas. Mostly still-lives and studies created as part of sessions in a private art studio

A-la-prima etude of daffodils flowers Still life with an embroidered towel

Watercolors

Winter study sketch with a factory.

Watercolor allows for creating washes, flowing, translucent colors. It dries fast allowing for quick colorful sketches. At the same time using thin brushes allows to create exact and controlled shapes.
