YUK Baca! YUK Baca!

Do you sometimes want to cry because you feel hurt? Burst with joy when something amazing happens? Or want to punch an imaginary pillow because something made you really angry? Me too! That’s just part of being human.

Our emotions can be big or small and they don’t usually disappear when we try to ignore them. But when we take the time to notice how we feel, name our emotions, and understand where they come from, things can start to feel a little easier.

In this edition, our wonderful team of writers, illustrators, and psychologist, invite you on a journey through the world of emotions. We hope these pages spark gentle, meaningful conversations and offer thoughtful insights for our young readers and the adults who care for them.

Happy reading,

Vi

THOUGHT

or FACT? Let’s learn how to tell the difference!

FACT

A fact is something that is true for everyone.

Example: "Lintang made a tiny hiccup sound during the test."

That's a fact – we all saw it happen in the story!

THOUGHT

A thought is what someone thinks, believes, or imagines in their head. It might be true or not true.

Example: "Roaring is stupid."

That’s a thought – it's what Lintang believed, but not everyone might agree!

Sometimes our thoughts feel really big — but that doesn’t mean they’re always TRUE.

Which of the following are facts, and which are thoughts?

Lintang couldn’t control his roar.

Everyone hated Lintang’s roar.

Lintang’s head was hit by a rock.

His classmates laughed because they liked him.

Lintang made everyone laugh during the test.

Recommended Resources on Emotions

Peace Out Podcast

Peace Out is a calming podcast that helps kids slow down, breathe, and notice their emotions. Through short stories and simple mindfulness exercises, it builds self-awareness and emotional balance. Great for bedtime or quiet moments, it offers a screen-free way to practice calm and focus.

Invisible Things, by Andy J. Pizza & Sophie Miller

This illustrated book helps kids notice and name what they can’t see like feelings and thoughts. With wacky art and playful language, it shows that emotions like worry or joy are real, even if hard to explain. It’s a fun read for all ages while building empathy and emotional awareness.

The Whole Brain Child, by Daniel J. Siegel M.D. & Tina Payne Bryson

The Whole-Brain Child offers clear, sciencebased strategies to support children’s brain and emotional development. It helps caregivers raise kids who are more resilient, emotionally aware, and adaptable. A mustread for any parent or educator, and available in English and Bahasa Indonesia.

Everyone has emotions, big and small. Learning to understand accept and manage them is like learning any new skill it takes practice and you’ll get better over time. Let me show you how!

Why Do We Feel So Many Emotions?

Emotions are very important! They help us understand the world and ourselves.

Let’s take a trip back in time so I can show you! Imagine our ancestors 200,000 years ago. Just like us, they felt emotions, and these emotions helped them survive!

Look at this man—he’s being chased by a wild animal. He escapes just in time!

1. 2. 4. 3.

He feels fear.

That fear makes his body react. His heart beats faster, his legs get ready to run.

Without fear, he might not have reacted in time and been hurt, right?

Have you noticed how your body reacts when you’re really mad? Are your fists clenched? Do your muscles tense up, and maybe you feel like you want to scream or cry.

That’s because emotions don’t just happen in our mind —they affect our whole body! Crying, for example, isn’t a bad thing. It actually helps your body relax and return to balance.

That’s why we shouldn’t hold back our tears when we need to cry!

Are Some Feelings Bad?

don’t like feeling sad, jealous or scared. What can I do about it?”

Having a healthy mind doesn’t mean feeling happy all the time. It means feeling different emotions in different situations like sadness when something bad happens or excitement when something good happens.

What matters is how we manage those feelings. It’s okay to feel them, and with practice we can learn ways to deal with them.

We can't stop emotions from happening, but we can choose how we respond to them.

Ways to cope with big emotions

Play with a pet

Remember how our body reacts when we have big emotions? To help us cope, we can help our body relax, release energy, and do things that make us feel good. Different things work for different people here are some ideas to try!

Take deep breaths

Express yourself throught drawing or writing

Move your body (running, dancing, julping)

Talk to a friend

One thing that helps almost everyone? Hugging a loved one! It’s one of the best ways to feel safe and calm.

Oh, and Samanta—what’s a psychologist, exactly?

A psychologist is someone who helps people understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Sometimes, children or adults feel sad, anxious, angry, or confused and they’re not sure why or what to do about it. That’s when we psychologists come in

How do psychologists help?

A big part of our job is simply talking. When someone shares what they’re feeling or thinking, it helps them understand themselves better—and that alone can make things feel lighter. Talking things through can also help people find new ways to cope and feel more at peace.

With children, we often use play too! Drawing, toys, or games can help kids show how they feel—sometimes more easily than with words. It’s a way to help them feel safe, seen, and supported.

Are there special medicines that can help people feel better?

Yes, sometimes medicine helps. Just like our bodies, our brains can get out of balance too. Some mental health problems are caused by changes in how the brain works, and medicine can help fix that But giving medicine is the

I’ve always been curious about why people think, feel, and act the way they do. I loved listening and supporting others when they were sad or scared. That curiosity led me to study psychology and I discovered that helping people understand themselves and feel better is what I love most.

Can kids make real decisions?

At our school, we do!

Let’s meet the children of Deutsche Schule Jakarta (DSJ)!

I CHOOSE MY PATH

No uniforms No one-size-fits-all

At DSJ, kids grow as independent thinkers, following their curiosity and making choices that shape their learning.

I like being kind to people, animals, andthe world around us.

WE DECIDE TOGETHER

From class councils to student-led projects, children at DSJ learn that their voices matter. They practice democracy by participating in real decisions together.

At our school, I can be me - and I learn my own way.

WE CARE FOR EACH OTHER AND THE WORLD

We teach that kindness and responsibility go hand in hand for people, nature, and the environment around us.

When I feel upset or hurt, I can say it — and som

WE TALK IT OUT

From Peace Steps to class councils, at DSJ we help children name their feelings and solve conflicts with kindness.

I keep trying even when it’s hard. And that makes me proud.

I CAN DO IT!

We focus on how children learn, not just what they achieve. At DSJ, kids grow through small wins, creative tasks, and learning that builds confidence step by step.
