Bringing back the Kampong lifestyle with a twist.

ORBIT

In contrast to isolated residential plots in Punggol, Orbit is a continuous form that snakes across the site, crossing above the train station, joining the three seperate plots are rejoined as one.

Form is achieved with slices of curves, supported by thin pillars, to achieve a lightweight structure.

Sky garden is inspired by the old kampong spirit, where neighbours can look down from common corridoors to talk to each other, and hang out in spacious gathering spots. Sky garden rises above the surrounding buildings, hence offering grand panoramic view of Punggol.

Void deck is porous to the surrounding social spaces, allowing residents to walk freely. The loops of the building creates pocket spaces for designated activites, such as pavilions and sports.

Units are flushed to the inside edge and morphs around the curvature of the building, allowing living rooms to face the exterior for views of Punggol while the common corridor overlooks the community spaces within the neighbours.

Exciting club house with sports facilities breaking up the monotomy of its street.

SHOPHOUSE SPORTS COMPLEX

Study on negative space within an arbituary cubic volume. Using three cubes per side, white cubes represents negative space while the empty gaps represent positive spaces.

SHOPHOUSE SPORTS COMPLEX

This iteration explores the possibilities of having a perceived gap at any depth when seen from all sides. Relating back to the topic, the cubes would translate to circulation relations within a space as considered in an abritrary, all rounded context, while the gaps created would represent possibilities of functional spaces. Together, this would go beyond the limited opinions of up-down and left-right ways of thinking about space, but rather really break down and understand each existence in a space as a whole without a bias.

TRANSLATING STUDY TO DESIGN In order to optimise the vertical space within the narrow shophouse structure, negative spaces are spotted vertically and along the circulation leading to positive spaces.

Ground floor explores the relationship between the private living space of the artist and public gallery space where his art is displayed. Iterations are made to explore methods that creates physical separation of the two types of spaces, yet allowing visitors in the gallery to visually connect with some moments of the artist daily life from his private living space.

The second floor consisting of a guest room and private yoga room challenges the privacy level between the artist doing his yoga and his guest staying in the room nearby.

Window in Passageway

Public Entrance

Visitors have a sneak peek of the artist’s home through a glass slit in the passageway. In contrast, the living room glass gives the painter a nice view of his courtyard from his living room.

The Grand Stairs Leads to the upper floors that are the tenant’s most private living space Yoga Room and Master Bedroom.

Public Art Gallery An enclosed space provides the artist with large wall spaces for the artist to showcase artworks of various sizes and in various arrangements. The center allows for mingling or additional stands for art pieces.

Courtyard The physical barrier between the public gallery and the private living quarter. From the artist’s living and dining room, a full glass wall provides a beautiful view into his garden, against the backdrop his gallery.

Through the window in the passageway, visitors can take a glimpse into the artist’s private life in a non-intrusive manner.

This is close to his private home entrance, making it easy for him to access.

Guest Room Guest room is on the ground floor, with easy access to most amenities in the artist home and close to the door.

Yoga Room Yoga room is sheltered with a room but not fully enclosed to provide a view of the roof garden.

Corridor One corridor, many destinations one towards the yoga room, one towards the master bedroom.

The Master Bedroom Courtyard

A spacious room on the roof with access to the roof garden.

Left open, providing a private view of activities downstairs, also keeps the courtyard well ventilated and well lit.

Roof Fully walkable, a possible activity or garden space, almost like a large balcony extended from the master bedroom.

Catching every breeze.

UNCAGED - WINDMILL TOWER

A sturdy yet minimalist structure that explores the possibilities of modularity.

Fans are therefore small and used as repeated units to ctach wind at every height.

Fishing line is used to string the fans together to create the illusion of fans effortlessly suspended, giving our design the lightness and minimalist look.

Three types of wind blade allows us to maximise lightness for spinning and the amount of wind each blade can catch.

To create a minimalist look, we start off by keeping the visual of a continuous line. A lap joint is perfect for us to overlap the planks and form the single line. The right-angles also allows the bottom plank to support the top plank and prevents slippage, as oppose to a angled joinery.

Following the same idea of a clean, single line, our horizontal elements are also overlapped in order to flush them neatly. This also locks the four sides of the squares into place, reducing sliding during the fabrication process.

UNCAGED - WINDMILL TOWER

A secondary support system is cable tensioning, to support the primary cuboid skeleton. An adjustable crimp is used at every end of the cable tie to allow us to constantly tighten and adjust the tensions as necessary to ensure the rigidity of our structure.
