What is “Kidulting”

Meaning of “kidulting” in Recent Time

The economist raises the word “Kidulting”: a nostalgia-driven trend becoming popular. Kidulting is a new cultural trend where adults participate in playful activities generally meant for children.

When Does “Kidulting” Start Rising?

Kidulting has seen a rise since the COVID-19 pandemic. Experiences that let adults act like children are booming. Even after the pandemic subsided, adults have continued to ‘kidult’.

Inspiration

We always look back at our childhood selves at some moment as we grow older.

Dissatisfied with the current situation yet afraid of change.

Afraid to show oneself, lacking confidence.

+SELF EXPLORATION

Wearing a mask in society to appease others.

Embrace new challenges.

Unfearing of others' gaze, bravely showcasing oneself.

Pleasing oneself, following one's own heart.

This design employs a third-person perspective PC game as the medium, crafting a journey for the player to traverse through time and rediscover oneself. The gameplay centers around collecting and throwing objects, using dream-core style settings to create a rich spatial experience and emotional engagement. The design of the game's scenes is based on the theory of wave function collapse, utilizing parametric modeling software to generate varied and intriguing spaces. Throughout the journey, the continual transformation of character appearances and scenes guides players to explore their self-identity and evoke emotional resonance.

Concept & Game Flow

Sometimes, the growth of our bodies, age, and experience can actually narrow our perspective. However, looking through the clear eyes of a child, we can see that we once had much more. Looking back is also a process of self-discovery. Through the game, we return to moments of radiance from the past, picking up the qualities we once possessed. They never disappeared; they just need a journey to awaken them.

Getting addicted to mindless short videos as a way to pass the time.

Always harnessing imagination to create something new.

Character Design Strategy

The character design corresponds to each level, linking the timeline of the story through five variations. The character's appearance and clothing draw inspiration from my childhood memories at different stages, also reflecting some era-specific features. The character's shrinking body symbolizes the reversal of the timeline.

Wave Function Collapse Grasshopper

The concept of wave function collapse originates from quantum mechanics, but the wave function collapse algorithm used here is not directly related to quantum mechanics; it simply borrows the idea of wave function collapse.

Sudoku Explaination

In this context, an object exists in a superposition of multiple states before observation, and after observation, it collapses into a specific state. The more possible states it can exist in, the higher its entropy. Lower entropy makes it easier to be observed.

Monoceros, developed by the Subdigital Team, makes wave function collapse visualization and implementation in Grasshopper more accessible. In Grasshopper, conducting WFC can be simplified into three main steps: defining modules, defining slots, and defining rules.

Gameplay

In the initial concept, this game will be launched on the PC platform, so the following introduction will be based on keyboard and mouse controls.

Basic Actions

The overall space circulation design of the game is segmented into five primary levels and three intermediate levels.

Level 1 - Bedroom

The theme of the first level is the transformation of values, therefore, gold coins, which are rewards in other games, appear as obstacles in this level.Sometimes, gold coins may drop and roll, automatically being picked up when they approach the player. The player can also actively pick them up, but doing so will result in a decrease in movement speed and a reduction in jump height. Players can choose to discard the coins by throwing them away.

The sequence of the spatial organization is inspired by the actual layout of my real-life residence. Their placement also corresponds to the rooms in my home, each associated with different functions.

The objective of the level is to collect the items featured in the photos based on the photo clues encountered along the way, and, following the guidance, find the correct exit to enter the next level.

Research of 'Jiangnan' Culture 2

Jiangnan Heritage

Hengtang Postage

This project focuses on the landscape design of Jiangnan Heritage Hengtang Postage, blending Jiangnan-style landscape architecture with Kunqu opera-inspired installation art. It aims to create a contemporary narrative of Jiangnan culture, a symbol of aesthetic refinement and collective memory over a millennium, while exploring the connection between traditional Chinese garden design and Kunqu opera.

What is 'Jiangnan' as A Cultural Symbol

"Jiangnan, originally a geographical term referring to the region south of the Yangtze River in China, has evolved significantly through history.

Over the centuries, Jiangnan transcended its initial recognition for its stunning scenery to become a symbol of beauty culminating in what is known as 'Jiangnan Aesthetics'.Throughout the ages, the region has been a favored subject in poetry and painting, endearing itself to scholars and artists alike. This preference has elevated Jiangnan to a cultural icon , representing traditional Eastern aesthetics.

Core Beauty of 'Jiangnan' Culture Architecture and Linguistic

The beauty of 'Jiangnan' lies in its combination of natural landscapes, cultural richness, and historical depth, with particular prominence in Classical garden architecture and linguistic culture.

to 476 BC: 'Jiangnan' as "Wu Yue Culture"

In the Ming and Qing dynasties, "Jiangnan" aesthetics profoundly influenced daily life, evolving into a romantic lifestyle. This era's fascination with the region's culture and nature was significantly shaped by the southern tours ('Nanxun') of Qing Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong, each visiting Jiangnan six times.

During that period, 'Jiangnan' was named after the prominent Wu and Yue states, marking the beginning of Jiangnan culture's significant role in Chinese history.

Kunqu Opera as Major Entertainment

In this ancient painting, it could be seen that the ancient opera stage was once important architecture in the Heritage Hengtang Postage site. The century-old painting reveals that the ancient opera stage shown were key venues for Kunqu opera, a major artistic entertainment in Suzhou, its birthplace in Jiangnan Region. This art form, known for its lyrical and poetic style, preserves ancient Chinese language, marking it as a valuable cultural heritage. A pertinent question arises in the fast-paced era: how can the slower-paced Kunqu opera art become more attractive to modern audiences?

Kunqu Opera Dream in Peony Pavilion

Kunqu opera is one of the oldest operas of China and has been existing for over 600 years listed in World intangible cultural heritage.

The Peony Pavilion is about a love story beyond life and death, time and space, a romantic masterpiece in the history of opera. This drama shapes a female image of Du Liniang who is bold to breach feudal ethics and pursue love. It also eulogizes genuine love and revolts against the cultural environment confining personality though narrating the dream-like love experience of Du and Liu.

3 Main Theme of the Drama Dream in Peony Pavilion

From physical space to spiritual space Emotional expression of “in-depth sentiment”

“With a clear sky and a light breeze blowing, the scent of spring is swaying in the courtyard, like a thin thread.”

Revolt to the cultural environment where the ardor is confined

“Love once begun will never end.” “The mainstay of social life is emotion, and the excitement of emotion gives rise to the impulse to create poetic works”

The multiple narrative space of The Peony Pavilion four-fold narration space, developing progressively

1st Layer of Narrative

Practical Garden Space

“With a clear sky and a light breeze blowing, the scent of spring is swaying in the courtyard, like a thin thread”

The practical space of garden is a natural scene with gorgeous flowers and green willows, is a place for spring scenery with pavilions. Well-known flowers and queer grass indeed make the space flamboyant, relaxing and leisurely. The garden in spring is beautiful but far from and untouchable for the miss who can just stay at the boudoir of the court.

2nd Layer of Narrative

Liniang‘s Spiritual Space

“A lifelong love of beauty is inherent”

The spiritual garden is imbued with Du Liniang’s sentiment for life. She signs about her favorable or unfavorable turns in life when facing with full of the vigor of springtime, endowing the individual garden with emotion. The landscape of garden in her eyes converts from physical space to spiritual space of characters. Throughout this life, nature recalls Du Liniang’s inner desire for love and passion, and she also responds to the nature, making garden a site full of live emotional interaction.

3rd Layer of Narrative Liniang’s Illusion Space

“Taking half a branch of the weeping willow in the garden”

The garden in Du Liniang’s dream witnesses the love affairs between her and the leading man Liu Mengmei, and carries all of her eager for love. Her self-consciousness outpaces the dreamland of back garden of societal and ethical space, which represents natural order.

4th Layer of Narrative Emotional Space Connecting Dream and

“Having no interests in travel and appreciation due to being trapped in love and adoration”

After waking up, the garden becomes a concretion of Du Liniang’s dreamland and longing and a spiritual site harboring joy and sorrow, and also the connection of cruel reality and wonderful dreamland.

The idea and the composing elements all respond to the day of the dead in Latin traditional culture. The space is also designed for people who lost someone important to place their yearning and have a reunion carnival each year. The theme celebrates life and represents a unique Latin view of life and death.

What is Melbourne Vida Latin Festival?

Who and What Does “Latin” Really Refer to in this Context?

This day is also a family time. Families will come to the cemetery to light candles for their deceased loved ones, place their cherished belongings, and sing songs for their return.

On Day of the Dead, there will be grand celebrations in the streets. Music, dance and float parades will be indispensable activities. The carnival atmosphere will be reflected on this day

Examples of Famous Hispanic and Latin American Celebrations

- DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS (Day of the Dead, Mexico)

- CARNIVAL (also linked to Mardi Gras, Brazil)

- INTI RAYMI (Festival of the Sun, Peru)

- FIESTA NACIONAL DE LA VENDIMIA (Grape Harvest Festival, Argentina)

- FERIA DE LAS FLORES (Flowers Festival, Colombia)

- SEMANA SANTA (Holy Week, Spain)

These Examples have Informed Me of:

How the concept needs to be engaging enough; not only to entice visitors, but to provide a desire to admire as well as learn about these diverse cultures (even after the event).

All these festivals (that have inspired many other festivals) are known for their means of celebration (dancing, painting, parading, etc.) shared over space and time.

Theme:

In Mexican culture, people die three times and ultimately complete the cycle of life. Death is not the end, but the only way through the cycle, just like the metamorphosis of a butterfly, emerging from its cocoon and becoming a butterfly.

Calavera and The Day of The Dead:

The first time I heard about Day of the Dead was from the movie Coco. I am fascinated by the Mexican people’s optimistic attitude towards life and death and their view on human’s lifecycle. Through more research, I deconstructed the annual Day of the Dead celebration into three parts: celebration for death, love and memory, and life cycle. It includes traditional celebration activities such as face painting, parades, altar decorations, A path paved with marigolds and decorative element with butterflies. and

Rebirth and Reunion & The Day of The Dead:

Universal Symbols of Rebirth:

- Marigolds: In Latin American culture, marigolds are flowers thought to be the flower of the dead. Marigolds are the dominant flowers used during the Day of the Dead.

- The Skull

- Spirit Animals: In Latin American culture, spirit animals are believed to be a guide for the spirit and souls.

- Tree of Life

- Butterflies

The butterfly goes through a cycle of life underwent radical changes.

Overall Concept

- I hope to design a space where life and death can be communicated that existing in virtual space. So people who miss each other could have a reunion carnival.

- The space also celebrates life and is a representation of A unique Latin American view of life and death. Visitors begin the festival as a ‘caterpillar’, they experience/cycle each respective area before reaching the “Butterfly Stage”.

The colour palette I choose to use is picked from the Latin American graphic pattern image from the moodboard. The colourful, bold, and fun vibe of this image reflects the energy of the Vida Latin festival.

Although this project is designed based on virtual space, I still hope to respond to the more representative landscape in Mexican culture in the context. Therefore I chose Chihuahua desert as the context of the design, which is located in the northwestern part of Mexico. The Chihuahuan Desert may be the most biologically diverse desert in the world as measured by species richness or endemism. So many lives blooming in the barren land given this site a tension of life, which fits the theme of this design quite well.

StoryBoard

Yolanda and her grandfather who passed away go to a carnival and reunion every year from their different worlds.

After walking through the time tunnel, both the living and the dead enter the venue through the carnival gates. Marigolds paved their way forward, connecting the two worlds, allowing people who missed each other to go for this reunion full of hope.

Suddenly Yolanda and Grandpa noticed that the crowd was gathering in one direction. They followed the crowd to the center stage, where a grand carnival performance began.

" I WILL ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR OUR NEXT REUNION."

After the encounter, Yolanda and her camegrandfather to the FACE PAINTING WORKSHOP . The artist beautifulcompleted face painting for Yolanda, making her and her grandfather look alike.

F7

After the performance, the carnival reached its climax. People left their seats in joy and came to the CENTRAL DANCE FLOOR to start dancing.

Yolanda and other people who came here entered the venue from the time tunnel. They closed their eyes in the tunnel and missed their loved ones.

Yolanda came to the MAIN ALTAR of the Tree of Life, placed a photo on the branch, and waited for her grandfather to arrive. Eventually, the two embraced under the altar, as did the people around them. During the walk, both Yoland and Grandpa felt very hungry. They came to the traditional Mexican FOOD STREET and ordered some tacos, Chilaquiles and Pozole.

Afterwards, they went among the PARADE teams to feel the carnival atmosphere. This year’s skeleton float parade seems to be grander than in previous years. The dancer dressed as Katrina performed beautiful dance with Latin traditional music.

The Day of the Dead celebrations was finally over, Yolanda said goodbye to her grandfather. But this is not a sad moment, because all the people embracing each other knew that as long as the memory lasts in the world, love will never disappear, and the person they miss will never be far away. And the most importantly, they will always be prepared for their next reunion.

The Requinto Guitar is a symbolic instrument in Mexican culture, which is slightly smaller than a classical guitar. As a virtual outfit and prop, I drew inspiration from the Ukulele, exaggerating the contrast between the sound box and the headstock to make it appear even smaller. The number of strings has been reduced, and the headstock features a painted skull; The sound box is encircled by ribs, and the guitar's face is decorated with patterns created through graphic design.

DESIGN FOR QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET 2040

2024 Melbourne Be Like Population Growth

The trends of population growth shows a rapid increase which means there will be more public space need in the future.

This project is a transformation design for the traditional Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne for 2040. It responds to the increasing requirement in the futrue and incorporates imagination of a more iconic, connected, sustainable and experiential market. The design aims to make it a landmark adapted to the future that combines tradition and modernity.

Economic Need

The unemployment rate in the City of Melbourne rises in 2021 to 5.4% from 3.9% in 2020.2

Covid does have great impact on the unemployment which was a reoccurring issue for residents in the City of Melbourne.

“Businesses are in need of the city to come back to how it used to be . There is a need for more events to attract people to Carlton and celebrate its diversity especially through food and culture.”

Mental Health

Restricted social gatherings and inperson interactions during lock down.

One in five residents of the City of Melbourne in 2022 had been diagnosed with depression or anxiety.

"Many people are struggling especially after COVID lockdowns and shows decrease in sense of community"

"The growth of population may leads to inadquate access to open green space in daily life."

Food security anxiety

Melbourne’s Foodbowl can currently provide enough food to meet 41% of the city’s food needs, but urban sprawl is putting this city-fringe farmland at risk.

According to the data from Health and Wellbeing Report 2020, the proportion of residents who reported experiencing food insecurity has increased a lot.

“Access to supplies and food options, like a general store would be a vital addition.”

“Us citizens would have more opportunities for multi-cultural experience.”

Research and Analogous Precident:A Case Of Beijing City

Is it possible to find a balance between urban efficiency and humanity?

As a child, I vividly remember the vibrant street vendors and bustling back-alley eateries, filled with joy. The crowded streets, though not always orderly, radiated a sense of community harmony and contentment, bringing happiness.

During my teenage years, I developed a keen interest in street art and underground music, which led me to skateboarding. At that time, bar streets, known for their ubiquitous neon lights, were fashionable in Beijing.

The Aattribute of Stability

The stability nature of hexagon structure makes it a great construction unit.

The 2008 Olympics, symbolized by fireworks above the Bird's Nest, sparked Beijing's urban transformation. In my youth, a period of artistic dreams and a longing for liberty, I witnessed the decline of street culture: bar streets were dismantled and alley vendors faced eviction by city authorities.

In 2023, surrounded by skyscrapers, frequently reflect on the vendors, eateries, street artists, and underground music from my youth. Modern cities now appear to provide only clean streets, concrete buildings, and excessive artificial light. I mourn the disappearance of this vibrant urban culture, the city's sou.

Shorter Travel Distances

Hexagonal road networks offer more direct with angles closer to straight lines, enabling quicker travel to destinations and reducing distances.

Higher Space Efficiency

Hexagonal grids allow for denser layouts, maximizing space use, unlike traditional 90-degree streets can create irregular, hard-to-develop areas.

Enhanced Traffic Flow

Hexagonal paths optimize pedestrian flow offering multiple routes, reducing congestion. allow easy detours around accidents or closures, improving urban traffic flow and minimizing delays.

Improved Pedestrian Experience

Hexagonal paths improve building visibility business exposure by guiding sightlines effectively. They connect areas seamlessly, enhancing pedestrian flow and street vibrancy, thereby improving the overall pedestrian experience.

Flexibility and Scalability

Small-scale hexagonal path designs offer flexibility and easy modification, ideal for temporary events and road layouts. They integrate well with hexagonal buildings, optimizing space and enhancing environments.

Pattern

The framework routinely accommodates glazing panels, solar panels, vertical greenery panels, and advertising panels, seamlessly integrating them into the architectural design.

The gradient hexagonal pattern on the ramp and shades serve multifunctional purposes.

Hexagonal panels encompass various functionalities: some form the structural framework for vertical greenery, others act as glazing components, while the segments with smaller perforations delineate pedestrian pathways, facilitating ease of movement.

Platform Shade

Platform

In the design and fabrication process of the exterior cladding and paving, I utilized Grasshopper as a design tool to implement the fundamental principles of hexagonal design. Through the creation of multifunctional hexagonal perforations of varying sizes and depths, I adhered to the core hexagonal design concept. These hexagonal perforations serve multiple purposes: they can function as climbing frames for vertical greenery on elevated walkways, act as planting troughs for greenery when incorporated into ground paving, and even accommodate solar panels and advertisements when integrated into the facade of a food hall.

By controlling the sizes of these hexagonal perforations, a naturally dynamic pattern emerges, enhancing the visual appeal and aesthetic interest of the building envelope. In areas where pedestrians walk, the perforation size is designed to be smaller than the average footprint to ensure pedestrian safety and prevent wheelchair entanglement during normal movement. The larger hexagonal sections are dedicated to greenery, seamlessly merging landscaping with paving, resulting in a fluid and harmonious transition between the two.

The explanation provided here pertains to the scripting and design process within Grasshopper.

After parking my bike, I sat on the steps of the sunken square enjoy the street artist’s guitar performance and feel the lively the QVM market.

The vertical greenery everywhere adds a natural atmosphere to the market. I like to sit on the seats under those greenery and read quietly while waiting for my friends to visit the QVM market.

I attended an open-air dance party in the square of QVM. Today's celebration was very great.

Today there was an exhibition of aboriginal art in the market. I walked on the pedestrian bridge to watch the exhibition and buy some souvenirs.

Today, I tried to hold an outdoor meeting with my colleage in the QVM market. We all enjoyed the atmosphere here. When we look up from the hexagonal seats under the pedestrian bridge, we could see the sunlight shining through the holes of the paving.

The addition of new market areas adds cultural diversity to the QVM. I enjoyed more street art performances and non-traditional crafts for sale here. The dark brick red color fits the traditional shed form of QVM. The indoor projection of patterns gives the market more space for cultural display.
