WEEK 6 READING: Surfaces that can be built from paper in architectural geometry Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description.

(Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. They share the same property: “They are special ruled surfaces because a tangent plane is always tangent to the surface along an entire ruling and not just in a single point.� In short, these developable surfaces can link every single plane of themselves. For cylinder, surface is formed by parallel lines. For cones, all lines can connect the profile curve and the vertex. For tangent surfaces of space curve, each tangent plane can connect the entire surface.

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) When combining applied geometry and architecture, architects use geometry to form surface, form and structure. With a great understanding of developable surface, compact structure of building can be form with the least material usage for support. Take Greenhouse, by Plasma Studio, as an example.

Although the large surface of greenhouse window is made by fragile glass, it stands still by utilization of panelize triangle to form developable surface.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is the use of computer and design technologies to build models in three-dimensional representation. It can “narrow the gap between representation and building, affording a hypothetically seamless connection between design and making.” The use of digital design change the understanding of two-dimensional representation by providing a more clear and easy to understand threedimensional form / model before real construction. This expand the boundaries of two-dimensional representation in architectural form and construction with the idea of the virtual model.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) First of all, folding increases overall structure. It is the most effective and easiest way to build threedimensional structure from various flat surfaces. Secondly, “Folding expands the three-dimensional vocabulary of surface by naturally producing deformation and inflection” In building design, materials can be varied, it is hard to curve some of the materials. With the use of folding, it makes component down and form structure easily.

Menawhile, setting different curve attractor when processing the custom 3D variable will affect the distribution and number of each object appearing on the surface.

INSPIRATION

RMIT Swanston academic building / Lyons Architects The spikeys and triangles represent dynamic tension, action and aggression.

The design presents a sense of energy and power.

Constructive Geometry / the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) The honey comb structure is complicated, while, neat and balance.

The openings of the hexagon increase in size according to their spatial coordinates in height to improve the structural efficiency of the construction.

This inpires me to creates variation of size and heights in my model.

Panalized diamonds are used with cutout inside. The design is unique and random, however, forming unity as whole. It influences me to apply varied square cut-out to my model.

Plan view The pattern of the top is a heart shape. Meanwhile, it might be too complicated for having so many haxagonal pyramids, which are located in a quite random way.

All in all, it is lacking of unity.

Panel custom 3D variable: The three types of 3D are distributed along cruve attractor (the top and the left base curve). They are distributed towards the right corner. The pattern from the hexagonal pyramids area is an arrows pointing to the the left right corner, being less dense and speads over towards the left right corner.

Panel custom 3D variable; The height of the 3D shapes was increased gradully (10mm - 59.4mm) from the left bottom corner to the opposite corner by applying curve attrator (top and left base curve) when building the offset points. From the shortest and least complicated pyramids to the tallest and the most complicated hexagonal pyramids, our eyes move gradually to the end. All in all, the variation of the size of different shapes with the slope of terrain decreasing from the left to right, the whole model presents rhythm and balance.

APPENDIX

A screenshot in Rhino, showing the process when dealing with the complicated objects. There was a problem unrolling when the hexagonal pyramids at first.

After trying mesh, triangulate mesh, the solution to fix the failure of unrolling is changing the degree of surface to U=1,V=1 and rebuild them in degree 1 again.

After printing out all the unroll templates, cut them with a sharp cutter and ruler.

Create a photo station at workplace with three white cardboards and lamp.

Use the back of the cutter to edge the folding lines.
