Over the past four decades, Temasek Junior College has developed a strong culture of excellence and high standards in the Performing Arts. As we turn 42 this year, we continue to celebrate Temasek Excellence, our unique brand of holistic excellence which develops greatness in our students’ intellect, character and leadership. The Performing Arts Personal Development Programmes (PDPs) are vital platforms for holistic education, as they imbue in our students the qualities of passion, resilience and discipline.

TJ Choir would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the following people who have made our concert a success:

As part of TJC’s tradition, annual public performances are staged to give our students the opportunity to fulfill their ambition of sharing their love for the Performing Arts. This year, we have an exciting series of performances which will captivate the imagination of our audiences. There will be six concerts to showcase the talents and dynamism of our students in the Chinese Drama Club, the Chinese Orchestra, the Choir, the English Drama Club, the Guitar Ensemble, and the Symphonic Band. The performing arts groups have also done us proud at this year’s SYF Arts Presentations – it is very satisfying to see how much our students have developed in their character and grown in their craft over the last few months in their preparations for their performances and presentations. These students have indeed displayed great Temasek team spirit and camaraderie in the process.

The 2019 TJC Performing Arts concerts would not be possible without the Passion, Purpose and Drive of everyone involved. I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of them — the passionate students of the various Performing Arts PDPs, the dedicated teachers and instructors, our zealous alumni, as well as our supportive parents.

Thank you for your support in creating a vibrant Arts scene at Temasek Junior College, and please enjoy what our students have lovingly put up for all of you.

I Hear?

Temasek Junior College Choir Established in 1977, the Temasek Junior College Choir is one that is rich in history. Over the years, it has created a place for aspiring singers to hone their choral music skills. TJ Choir also recognises the importance of forging a sense of community, alluding to its motto, “Blended in Voices, Bonded in Spirit”. The choir is well known to be home to a family of talented choristers who know how to achieve the balance between hard work and having fun, united by their passion for creating beautiful music.

Governed by such principles, the choir has been awarded with numerous accolades from both local and overseas competitions. Most recently, in the 2018 Belt and Road World Choir Festival, the choir had a fulfilling trip to Hong Kong, where they made it to the finals and clinched a Gold Award in the Mixed Youth Voices category. Both choirs were also awarded the certificate of Distinction at the 2019 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF).

20 YEARS OF CHORAL REFLECTIONS A staple in the TJC Performing Arts calendar, Reflections is the TJ Choir’s annual concert series that began in 1999 under the choral direction of Ms Jennifer Tham. It is a culmination of all that the choir has learnt and accomplished in the past year and is an exuberant showcase of the choir’s passion for choral music. This year, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our annual concert with Reflections XX: What is that I Hear? With SYF ending only a week ago, the choir has displayed a great deal of perseverance and focus in preparing for our performance, and is excited to share our music with you tonight.

Conductor

Ms Choy Siew Woon Choy Siew Woon is a Singaporean choral director, music educator and vocalist.

In 2010, she received the Kodály Certificate in Music Education from the Kodály Institute of the Lizst Ferenc Academy of Music (Kecskemét, Hungary; in conjunction with the Young Musicians’ Society, Singapore). She has attended editions of Kodály Seminar Asia from 2009 to 2016, where she trained in choral pedagogy, musicianship and conducting. In 2017, Siew Woon was selected to conduct in the International Masterclass for Choral Conductors at the 15th International Chamber Choir Competition (Marktoberdorf) and the 11th World Symposium on Choral Music (Barcelona). Thus far, she has studied under Jennifer Tham, László Nemes, María Guinand, Volker Hempfling and Simon Halsey.

Siew Woon is the conductor of several school choirs in Singapore, and has led her choirs to accolades at international choral competitions in Czech Republic, Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2016, she was the choral clinician at the Singapore East Zone Arts Festival, where she held singing workshops for participating secondary schools in Singapore. Most recently, Siew Woon was a clinician at Voices – a Festival of Song 2018, a 3-day singing festival organised by The Esplanade, where she gave a series of choral workshops and conducted sing-along sessions for the public.

Siew Woon also conducts the Cor Novum Choir, a non-profit, project-based community choir formed in 2016, bringing together music lovers to raise funds for charitable organisations in Singapore.

As a chorister, Siew Woon represented Singapore at the inaugural season of the Asia Pacific Youth Choir (Macau, 2011) and the 10th World Symposium on Choral Music (Seoul, 2014). She also sang with the SYC Ensemble Singers, where she served as Assistant Conductor from 2009 to 2018.
