01. DRONE CITY Location: San Francisco Fall 2017, studio project, CSI + BUSSARD competition Iowa State University Instructor: Mitchell Squire Team: Peizhou Yue, Weijie Li, Peiyao Liu Contributions: idea, diagrams, axon drawing, conceptual drawings, renders, physical models The Project anticipates a time when technology becomes responsible for building anew the land, culture, peoples, and social contracts erased by its aggressive advances. At the heart of this work is a call to care enough for the institutions, environment, and cultural forms that have provided us identity, to preserve them amid technological advancements. The focus of our project is on the double-edged technology boom of the past few decades in the Bay Area, and its fallout on the culture, the environment, social and political life, and the physical construct of the city of San Francisco. In 2150, a city-like platform levitates from the earth at a height approximately 783 meters above sea level. It hovers over the land consumed by the same technology that keeps it floating. It is a drone. Its purpose is to sustain a critical conversation with the technology that sustains it.

The design attempts to imagine the unknown. Through experiments acting on an aerial photograph of the city with drastically different materials, creating a visual and mental connection to it from a position above. We converse with its organization, its various cultural districts, its infrastructure, and its topographical features. Pulling out of the fabric of the city the key cultural institutions and monuments that give it identity, and constructing various formal compositions out of those typologies. The design abstracts these compositions digitally until we arrive at a sufficiently different and complex arrangement.

02. TOWARDS AN INTERGENERATIONAL WILLIAMSBURG Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn Spring 2019, studio project Washington University in St. Louis Instructor: Petra Kempf, Viren Brahmbhatt Team: Peizhou Yue, Bixiao Yuan Contributions: idea, diagrams, drawings, renders What if Williamsburg transitions towards a neighborhood that embraces intergenerational living to give different generations a platform to work and live together? Taking the shutdown of the L train as a trigger, this project re-appropriates the anticipated vacancies caused by the shutdown as an entry point to re-think the current zoning regulations for the waterfront in this neighborhood.

Within this context, we believe diverse job and housing opportunities in the area for different types of residents could stabilize the current development trend in Williamsburg. To test this scenario, we imagine the L train will shut down, which will trigger an increase in vacancies along the waterfront in Williamsburg. As these luxury apartments will lose their values, we begin our intervention by re-appropriating the vacant apartments or floors through the introduction of a more diverse set of uses and services to attract multiple generations to the community.

As an entry point, we begin our operation with three different typologies: a large block-size luxury apartment building located on 325 Kent Avenue; a skyscraper, located on 22 North 6th Street and an old factory, located on 79 North 11th Street.

Through a careful process of placing and combining different uses, such as co-working scenarios next to a kindergarten, a gym and a senior living facility, we slowly transform the core of Williamsburg from a bedroom community into a self-sustaining neighborhood.

IMPLEMENT METHODOLOGY Robert Shelton is a worker who has worked in Domino for 20 years. During his time at the sugar factory, he bought his first car, bought his own house and paid for the tuition for univeristy for his sonr. However, after the Domino closed, his friends lost their jobs and became alcoholics because their wives left them and their children had to drop out of school.

The edge prioritizes the needs of the aging generation by renovating multiple types of residential units on different floors to meet the needs of a wide range of seniors. The new residential type can meet the needs of ordinary elderly, elderly with half selfcare ability, elderly with no self-care ability and multi-generational families. By adding functional connections between floors, it tests scenarios while creating a shared space but reserve private spaces.

03. TIMBER IN THE CITY Location: New York City Spring 2016, studio project, Timber in the City Competition Iowa State University Instructor: Calvin Lewis Individual project The timber in the city project comprises of a market, museum, and housing in lowereast side of New York City. This building will be located in the Puerto Rican community and become a connection underlying the overall planning of the community revival. The project aims at using the building itself to separate the public and private space in the site. The food market and Andy Warhol museum face to the Delancey St. Converting the community into a place activating social life. A linear outdoors seasonal market eases circulation from transportation station to inside of the community. The new infrastructure attract not only residence live and work here but also the visitors to enjoy and participate in social life. Also, the project offers a variety of housing from studio to apartments to enable the residents to preserve their living space.

04. INTIMATE NATURE Location: Modderfontein, Johannesburg, South Africe Summer 2019, studio project, South Africa Program Washington University in St. Louis Instructor: John Hoal, Jonathan Stitelman Individual project

The whole project is to use this natural ground as a laboratory to test how people’s activities can intimate nature environment more and harmoniously. As the last land where is waiting for the city’s civil invasion in the Great Johannesburg area, the time for Modderfontein is coming to make its own decision. Comparing to some high civil area such as Marshalltown and Sandton. Modderfontein can be defined as the “Super Nature” space in terms of its natural resources. There is no more area like Modderfontein in Great Johannesburg area can reserve that so much natural features.

What I am going to do is to take over the typical high civil urbanized idea in people’s mind, but to introduce the idea of intimating nature in order to response to the nature environment in Modderfontein. In the 2050, the new Modderfontein will be a place for living, working, shopping and having fun while still keeping its unique character just like 30 years ago.

CONCEPT: The existing zoning will be challenged in the next 30 years. The isolated zones mode, which contains residential area, light industrial area, natural reserve area and mix-use area will convert into a highly connected 3- dimensional mode. The new mode has three layers, Green-Cushion-Home, from inside to outside. Trails and Minibus system can be the structure to facilitate mobility.

METHODOLOGY OF TRANSITION: The transition between civic and natural areas need to be tested in this project. Since the vision is to intimate nature. Transition is one of the most crucial part to show how to intimate nature.

SCENARIO: A long section drawing cut through the central green area shows the topography change, Train hub, and the Unfolded mall distribute on the site.

DAILY LIFE IN MODDERFONTEIN: The four Personas show four different people daily life in modderfontein with different background, age and gender. The daily route present the acitivities, whcih they participate in in different spots in the design. Also indicates the change of materials and textures in different sites.

05. WOODSHOP Location: Omaha, NE Spring 2015, studio project Iowa State University Instructor: Sungduck Lee Individual project Locate between the Old Market and industrial area of Omaha, inherit the craftsmanship spirit, the Woodshop contains a working space on the ground level and selling space above.

As the extension on the edge of Old Market urban fabric, the space also provides visitors a rest and communication area.

The design brings the daylight, nature, the view of the ground below and the sky into interior through a large asymmetrical hole. A tree growing in the center of the hole enhances the felling of natural environment in the interior space and attracts people to come forward to the selling space. Simultaneously resolve the contradiction of needing to be inside but preferring to be outside.

Influenced by the local culture and new technology fluid, the neo-monumental icon of San Francisco grows upon the most flourish street of the city. The Nike innovation center project starts from the idea of bringing the sports culture into the architectural design. Sporting activities create a strong bond connects the building and the community also connects the two visually isolated structures at the same time. Unlike traditional office building, the office was designed to provide a close work relationship and to enhance the interaction between the Nike staff and various partners. Also, the design offers a variety of different sports spaces for working and testing new products. The mountain form public gymnasium matches harmoniously with the city’s topography.

Meanwhile, climbing the mountain to access the upper-level working space is one of the most interesting features in the building design. The office design has enabled the firm to develop an impressing digital office to promote innovations in the sports industry.
