South Downtown: Highway 97 study area

Highway 97, Redmond, Oregon Landscape Planning Studio, Fall 2015

The City of Redmond wants to improve the condition of US 97, the main north-south corridor, that is heavily used by through traffic as well as local traffic. We partnered with the City and University of Oregon’s Sustainable City Year Program and to explore improvements of the faculty and the facility with the creation of a multi-way boulevard.

The canal creates an iconic sense of place that invites people to pause and take refuge from the taxing heat.

The seasonal canal produces an exciting sound of rushing water that masks the noisy highway that parallels it.

Impaired Visibility

A poorly mulched stretch along the canal acts as a waterfront pathway. It is neither easy to access or navigate.

A large grade change keeps the highway out of sight. Although people who have crossed the highway and continue to run down the hill is common sight. The slope and paralleling buildings seem to create a dustbowl in which a gust of wind carries dry desert dust.

After comparing the Nodal Design Lots five most important indicators, Lot H is selected for 20-year redevelopment plan and Lot K, L, O, P are selected for 50-year redevelopment plan.

Lot H Redevelpment Proposal With the Parking on the Highway side and business building on the train track side, a pedestrian path is created in the middle. This design will provide enough parking space and ample store front space to the proposed business types, which are retails or food/drink businesses. The middle path will also function as a continuous access and to the public park area as well as a guiding design form for a pedestrian corridor.

This project is exploring urban ecotones through a series of investigative processes in a proposed intervention that “does the most with the least” to improve the quality of a single site.

Connection over the River The completion of the second Ferry Street Bridge replaced the wooden covered bridge of 1876. The earlier covered bridge had been compromised in the flood of 1890 which was so severe that the north approach to the bridge was washed away. The actual course of the river changed, necessitating the addition of a new span to the old bridge.

Based on the investigation of historic trajectory, environmental behavior and human traces, solutions are proposed to conserve or alter the site so as to achieve the most with the least intervention. The Duck Pond Area of Alton Baker Park will become a much healthier habitat for native plant species and birds, as well as a more interesting and interactive public space for humans to observe the changing season.

African-American Settlement The Ferry Street Community was Eugene’s first African-American neighborhood. It was located near the foot of the DeFazio Footbridge, on the north side of the river. More African-Americans came to Eugene, despite the discriminatory laws and ethic. In1949, county officials demolished the homes and church of the ad hoc community and relocated the residents.

The “Duck Pond” Came into Being The City decided to purchase and repurpose this large farm land into a large public park and continued doing so until it grew from a small 20 acre parcel to its current size of around 400 acres. The park is named after Alton F. Baker who was essential in the process of developing and building Alton Baker Park.

Canton, China Comprehensive Project Fall 2015 to Winter 2016 Community Outreach

Urban water system combines freshwater, wastewater and storm water to run in a full circle. Lychee Bay Canal area is a link in the whole urban water system, and a link in the user’s experience to learn about the importance of clean waterways. The design of new Lychee Bay will be the catalyst to start a chain reaction and bring all the possibilities to life. Lychee Bay community is a system that consists of the environment and the people. The design will act as the catalyst in generating the energy in the canal community and release them into the surrounding area.

Waverly, Pennsylvania Site Specific Landscape Art Installation Overlook Field School, Summer 2015

Overlook is a 400-acre property in northeastern Pennsylvania designed by the Frederick Law Olmsted firm in the early twentieth century. The 2015 Overlook Field School focused on water and watersheds, seeking to understand the natural structure of watersheds, our cultural demands on those systems, and the tensions and unintended consequences that occur when we insert ourselves into the waterscape. This inquiry ended with the creation of a site-specific art installation meant to evoke a deeper understanding of how water shapes both the physical and the cultural landscape.

The inspiration of the sculpture comes from experiencing different forms of water in the Lackawanna watershed and learning the human impact on natural water cycle.

Water is central to life, and often we believe that we fully understand the water cycle, the nature of water, and the role of water in our ecosystem. But Lake Lens challenges our perception and preconceptions. Two rings, seemingly identical in material and size, reveal themselves on closer inspection to be quite different. The journey by boat across the lake rewards the viewer with deeper understanding and knowledge of the relationship between the two forms, a metaphor for the process of acquiring deep knowledge about an ecosystem.

Hong Kong Walkability Analysis As one of the most densely populated areas and the third most important leading international financial center in the world, Hong Kong is a very special region unlike any other place. Surprisingly, Hong Kong maintains a decent walkability and a very high percentage of green open space. We conducted a walkability analysis in Sheung Wan area, a typical area for residents and visitors to travel by walking in a vertical form from the hill all the way down to Victoria Harbor. After studying the current walkability in Sheung Wan, I have developed a personal impression of Hong Kong. DĂŠrive This project is looking at the disappearing sky above the concrete forest in Hong Kong. The four districts in Hong Kong represent different types of neighborhood. Yau Ma Tei -- high density residential; Mong Kok -- low rise commercial; Central -- high rise commercial; SoHo -- mixed use and entertainment. Pictures of these districts were taken straight up from standing on the street. By dividing the area of sky by the area of the whole picture, we can get the percentage of how much sky there is left above our head. Yau Ma Tei

The project envisioned how a newer part of the city could be designed in harmony with the natural and cultural context. The design engages Japanese vernacular landscape architecture issues and serves as a shared vision of the uniqueness of the Kyoto genre. The design idea was enlivened by visits to the many temples and gardens of Kyoto and the extraordinary craftsmanship and materiality of the Kyoto environment. The spiral geometry is inspired by Daishin-in, the 14th Century Buddhist Zen Temple. Using watercolor as a medium in designing this historic capital of Japan is immediate and precise.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS PNCA Plaza, Portland, Oregon University of Oregon, Winter 2015 I teamed up with one other student to complete an entire set of construction documents using AutoCAD and SketchUp in 10 weeks. The site is a half acre plaza located next to the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. This document includes layout plan, site plan, grading plan, planting plan, irrigation plan, lighting plan, five design details, fountain mechanics, etc.
