Reason of conservation area The part of Ancoats designated as a conservation area by Manchester City Council in June 1989, is bounded by Great Ancoats Street, Oldham Road, Kemp Street, Wadeford Close, Jersey Street and the Rochdale Canal.

Natural Resources On this map we have illustrated the locations and the quality of green spaces that are currently present on the site. Two out of three green space are on the outskirts of the site, there is only one of them in the middle (which is earmarked for demolition).

Currently, at any point on the site you are 10 minutes away from a green area but, unfortunately, not all of them are of a good quality.

In this area: This area provides possibilities for the development of water-based leisure activities and associated commerce.it can also encourage further residential redevelopment on currently vacant sites.

Ancoats is particularly suitable for small business workshops or specific uses such as photographic, recording and graphic design studios, and media related activities.

Current Land Use Of the "PLOT" Educational Facilities Healthcare Facilities Green Area Land under Construction Plot Boundary Conflict Area In order to make sure that this area is user focused we have to make sure that there are facilities for all the basic needs of residents available to them, as well as making sure that the area is divided by categories. On this map we have illustrated current land use and we are investigating what is the current divide. It is clear that Ancoats is a more commercial zone whereas New Islington is more housing focused. These two parts are co-dependent and it is important that in our masterplan we integrate them together.

CONTEXT / ANALYSIS SWOT

Now that we have looked deeper into the site we have decided to do a SWOT analysis in order to outline the main problems to help us determine our strategies. ···Strength and Opportunity In Ancoats, the listed buildings have their strong historical value. As for green area, the large park is located next to high-density residential area, as well as the large green area at station in New Islington. In addition, we can see the breathtaking view of the grand canal in New Islington. ···Weakness and Threat There is lack of good quality of green areas. For instance, the large park in Ancoats next to high-density residential area has been isolated from the rest of Ancoats since it has a clear boundary, so it is difficult to access. In addition, the large green area at station in New Islington has no supported facilities related to its function.

Moreover, in term of roads and transportation, there are some cars that have been parked on the pavements and many drivers can drive in the fast speed in the residential area.

Proposal Transportation

Transport Masterplan We could not eliminate all the cars from the site as people require car access to their houses and to accommodate bus routes that are currently in place. Nevertheless, we have reduced the amount of vehicle roads to a minimum and tried to make them overlap with pedestrian roads as little as possible. The main vehicle roads will be going around the site and there will be minor vehicle roads within the site. This will discourage drivers from going into the site area making it safer for pedestrians. By doing so we want to provide better and communal areas that will encourage people to be more active within the community and to engage with each other

Transport Strategy

Our main transportation strategy is to try and reduce the amount of cars in the area. To do so we have decided to connect the whole site together with bike and pedestrian roads. This will make the area a lot safer and will connect the residents together. The two main pedestrian roads will be going through the entire site and all the green areas of Ancoats and New Islington. We want it to be a pedestrians highway that will attract people to take this route and therefore will encourage them to get to know each other and start building a community. These roads were strategically chosen to be close to main public transport stops so people are encouraged to use them more. Pedestrian roads will have trees and other plants along it. Doing so we are able to incorporate more greenery into the area without taking away space. The idea behind it is to create somewhat of green arteries that run through the area and connect public green spaces. This will greatly impact the perception of the area from the user’s point of view by making it more inviting and communal.

Proposal Green Space

PUBLIC SPACE & GREEN AREA STRATEGY: With regards to the green areas and public spaces our main goals that we want to achieve are: 1. Make the pedestrian streets green 2. Create new central square (plaza) and pocket parks 3. Redesign existing green areas and open spaces

PUBLIC SPACE & GREEN AREA STRATEGY: As we have mentioned before we are implementing pedestrian roads throughout the site that will be connecting all the green areas together. We will be re-designing thee current public spaces and adding three new ones to the scheme. This will provide enough public space for all the residents of the area and for all the people working in the area. Each public space will be used for different purposes and at different times of day. The green spaces are strategically placed at the beginning and the end of each route and two of them are in the middle. This will create a sense of journey for people walking along the pedestrian route.

Greenspace Masterplan The three main and largest public spaces each have a different purpose.

1-The green area next to the tram stop will have benches, small shops and public area where people can relax when they get back into the area. This is largely a recreational space with great views and a sense of openness due to its size and that all the buildings are not located directly next to it.

2-The second public space is the plaza in Ancoats. This area is designed to be used by people who work in Ancoats to spend their lunch brake there. We have designed it to have cafes and restaurants with a lot of benches where people can have their lunch. This is a smaller communal space surrounded by buildings but we want it to have a sense of oasis within dense area. We believe that it is important to break up the pattern of densely built buildings by creating communal green spaces.

3-The third communal space is next to the community centre. We have designed it to be a residential and community space where people can come to relax on the weekend and engage with the community. We believe that it is important to provides areas like this to encourage people to spend more time outside and talking to others rather than staying at home or going to a different part of town.

Proposal The Plot

The Council wants to use the empty site as a car park. Because Manchester council makes more money from parking, almost £10million in profit last year.

The Local Residents protest against the plan, as well as the New Islington Free School and climate change activists. They claims that the proposal will increase emissions in the area, lead to increased traffic on Great Ancoats Street, lead to adverse health effects on local children. They in favour of a community green space instead.

There is an Ancoats Retail Park here.

After 2017 The Ancoats Retail Park on Great Ancoats Street was purchased in 2017 by Council in what was described as the largest ever land purchase in the history of Manchester city centre. And the retail park was demolished in March this year and is currently vacant.

Design Process

Function Analysis

Three key elements, Canal, Cotton field park and commercial across the great Ancoats Road.

Canal represent the history and industrial culture. Integrate design the Mills, Canal, riverside park and gallery to show history element.

Cotton field park is the biggest existing green spaces in this area.

Combine the existing commercial across the street, setup a public service center and shopping center, build up a city subcenter.

1. The main entrance on the south side is facing the Great Ancoats Road and rest of city center.Most people come from city center and piccadilly station will use this entrence.

2. The north, west, and east minor entrances is for the residents of ancoats and new islington and lead to gallery and shopping center.

3. Commercial area also contains several entrances. While attracting visitor into the venue, it can also attract people to pass through.

Surrounding facilities in 15mins walk

The City Council proposed to build a high-rise office building in New Islington Green to achieve higher economic benefits and improve the living standards of the New Islington area.

However, local residents hope to retain New Islington Green as a green space for community activities.

They launched a petition in June last year, and now more than 3,000 people have participated in the petition Location for the office building project planning

Set New Islington Station as central point.

There is only two shops in 10mins walk, but they are furniture shop and building material shop.

There is only one super market in 15mins walk.

All the Catering is around 15mins walk or even further.

New Islington Green currently has many problems. These problems makes it isolate from the rest part of city like an island.

1- Newly built housing that is much higher than the old residential.

2-The only entrance across the Ashton Canal is behind the Chips building and it is narrow and hard to find.

3-There is no pedestrian entrance on the north end of the green space, it is inconvenient for the residents live in Milliners Wharf and Hat box.

4-The green space on the South side is seperated by the tunnel and it is rarely used 5-The entrance on Pollard Street is block by the walls and carpark.

6-East corner is a building ruins, it is a disordered area use for car parking. It is unsafe.

New Islington Green also has many potential resources.These resources can provide diversified support for the development of New Islington Green.

1-Ashton Canal Lock keeper's cottage, it has great historical value.

2-Metrolink station, connect with the rest part of the Greater Manchester.

3-Near to the Etihad Campus and Piccadilly Station. They can provide Stable customer source.

4-The metrolink track does not separate the green space, but adds an important element to the green space.

5-Vulcan and Albion Mills is a listed building, it's facade can provide a amazing view to New Islington Green.

•Keep most of the existing green space.

•Expansion new green space to connect Cotton field park.

•Create new facilities and possibilities.

•Introducing the canal into the site to form a water landscape.

•Open the ground floor of the new residential.

•Build new bridges across the Ashton Canal.

Visual barrier In order to break the visual barrier formed by the surrounding new houses, the ground floor and the first floor of the new houses beside the canal were opened as community public spaces, forming a visual connection on both sides of the canal, enhancing the connection between NIG and NI.

Service facilities There are lack of service facilities within a 15-minute walk of NIG. There is only a supermarket nearby, and the rest of the businesses are furniture.

Provide more service facilities for residents around NIG to improve the quality of life of residents

Extend Greenspace Currently the new residential on the junction of Ashton Canal and New Islington branch is under construction, it formed a separation in space.

Physically connect Cotton Field Park and New Islington Green by expanding green space, new green space can attract more visitors and residents to New Islington green.

Ground Floor Open The new residential become a barrier, by opening the ground floor can create a visual connection to reduce the separation effects.

The opening space could use as community centre because it is near by the Canal and nursery centre, it has a great view and user can watch their children play outside.

Enhance Canal Element

Canal plays an important role in New Islington area, introduce Ashton Canal into New Islington Green symbolizes the continuation of industrial revolution history.

A new water landscape could also attract people to come and stay in this area.

Create New Facilities Use the existing empty space and new empty space create in strategy 1 to build new facilities.

These empty space all next to the main street, this make them become easy to access and more valueable.

Create New Bridges Currently there is only one bridge go across Ashton Canal and it is behind Chips building, which make it hard to find from New Islington side.

Two new bridges extend the existing road into New Islington green. They enhanced the connection across Ashton Canal and easy to find.
