Margrét also worked closely with Fanney in designing the Átak gym, completed at the end of 2006, which sits on the edge of Akureyri’s harbor. Running water plays a role in the gym’s interior as well. Along the edges of the central hallway that leads from the lobby to the workout areas, narrow strips of sea green square tiles are set slightly lower than the floor, forming shallow, water-filled channels. By the entrances to the locker rooms are clear panes of glass stretching from the ceiling to the sea green strips, and water flows gently and almost invisibly down. As an added touch, natural stones in front of the doors to the men’s and women’s locker rooms allow for easier passage over the water. Throughout the gym are these natural rocks, pieces of ocean-smoothed wood, sky blue tiles — as well as Margrét’s ceramic wall hangings, some of which resemble unknown sea creatures. Fanney and Margrét’s design and interior of the gym are inseparable from the exterior, and the wall of windows in the main workout room facing the harbor creates the impression that the building is floating on the water’s surface. Margrét was also deeply involved in the design of Friðrik V in downtown Akureyri, a new restaurant in a building with a century-long history. Originally a slaughterhouse, the building later served as a dairy — among other things — before standing vacant for three decades.
