CLIENT STATEMENT My client is a young entrepreneur who has been very successful in the world of technology. As a Stanford engineering graduate, she began her career at Apple. She was one of the first product managers of iTunes, she made iTunes the number one music retailer by the time she left in 2010. She then moved on to Google and YouTube, as well has Hailo, a U.K. taxi hailing application. Her newest project is the creation of KIT, a social recommendation platform for taste makers to share products they love.

With her continued success, Camille would like to invest and add to her projects by doing something different. She discovered the comfort and unique experience of boutique hotels during her travels and decided that she wanted to be co-founder of her own. Chicago being her hometown and where she spends most of her time would make the perfect location. She wants tourists and locals to get the full experience and get as much of the city as possible, while enjoying themselves in a sophisticated, yet relaxed atmosphere that takes in the character Chicago.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The design for this Boutique hotel located in Chicago takes its inspiration from the liveliness and style of the city. Being within River North it is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and not far from famous landmarks like Navy Pier. Bringing together the modern and traditional architecture of the city with simple lines, luxurious fabric, and rich colors. Spaces will invite both locals and visitors and give them an exclusive experience while also allowing them to de-stress from the hustle and bustle of modern day life.

Which brings forth the need of high-tech amenities and contrast with comfort such as a lounge bar, pool, and outdoor terrace.

An abundance of lounge spaces are provided throughout to bring guests together and share their experiences.

CLIENT PROFILE The Andersons George Anderson (49) ia a business man. He commutes to Downtown Chicago. Enjoys reading, relaxing, and grilling in the backyard. Sheila Anderson (45) owns a small bookstore and has flexible hours which helps in getting home before children. Enjoys cooking, baking, and prepares dinner every night. The kitchen and family room are very important spaces to her and need to be integrated. She also wants plenty of natural light & views to the yard and easy access to the outdoor entertainment area. Anna Paterson (76) is a retired medical assistant. She likes to stay active and read to relax. Although she likes to spend time with family, cook and bake with her daughter, she wants a space for isolation and quietness. She also wants to avoid stairs as much as possible. Patrick Anderson (17) is very active. He enjoys playing and watching sports, entertains his friends, and play video games. He will need his own TV in his bedroom with flexible seating. Anthony Anderson (6) enjoys playing outdoors with Buddy, the family dog. He is very art inclined, draws and paints. He will need plenty of natural and artificial light and some space for an easel or art supplies.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The renovation of the Anderson residence located in Winnetka, IL will provide the family with a comfortable, yet sophisticated and adaptable space to fit all of their needs. The family enjoys spending time together and entertaining family and friends, as well as relaxing after a busy work week and reading. We will provide simple integration of the public spaces in order to create easy and fluid movement throughout. Adding taller windows to these spaces will also help create openness and bring a bountiful of natural light which the family prefers.

To further tie the spaces together a similar color pallet and natural materials will be used throughout. However, furniture will be durable, with easy clean-ability and maintenance as the family is busy and active. The private spaces will be a retreat for each individual which will entice their character and personal preferences. Beginning with a boutique style living room to invite guests to conversation. The living room will also have semi-private reading nook lined with shelving for their books. The foyer will lead you to an open floor plan containing the kitchen and family room. The private spaces will be distinctly separated to provide privacy to each member of the family. The master bedroom will give sense of a “getaway� and provide ultimate privacy as well as luxury. The utility spaces will be easy to access maintaining large hallways for easy movement. We will include ergonomic and durable furniture, appliances, and accessories to accommodate multi-general use. The home will have an overall transitional style design with added warmth by utilizing woods and textiles. There will be a strong focus on play between neutral colors, stone, metals, and wood. Using all these materials in different finishes and textures will add dimension and contrast to each space while still maintaining an overall simple design.

CONCEPT STATEMENT This loft space, to be located in Pilsen, IL, will be in an industrial minimalist style as the client expressed he preferred.

With an inclusion of bold colors from his interest in artwork like that of artist Jeff Laibson. A unique cohesiveness between the live and work spaces is needed as the client wants easy access to his work space, yet needs separation and privacy during his off time. An open floor plan is kept within the living space with only a custom designed staircase that will assist in defining spaces, as well as, for the client to showcase his rock and asteroid collections. The work space is specific to the clients needs with focus on arrangement of each space in order for the recording studio to be functional. Both spaces will provide the client the flexibility and means to enjoy his living space as well as his passion for his work.

Founded in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher, who started as a stylist at the age of 14. He quickly gained recognition, after winning the European Hairstylist Championship, he started touring Europe and U.S. He then settling in Minneapolis were he opened his own salon, along with several others. He became a successful salon entrepreneur in his twenties. After suffering a burn out from overworking he recovered thanks to herbal remedies prepared by his mother and took on a Ayurveda lifestyle. He adopted a holistic thinking and integrated the belief that individual beauty is directly linked to the beauty of the world around us. Therefore, his products are holistic, cruelty free, and all natural green ingredients (more than 50% of the molecule comes from a plant).

Aveda also holds themselves environmentally responsible by becoming the first beauty company using 100% post-consumer recycled PET, and the first beauty company manufacturing products with 100% wind power, among other environmental health and safety issues.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The responsibility and care that Aveda takes towards the environment and holistic products is remarkable. A big part of their mission is to give back to society and communities which shows the type of company they are and they strongly push to maintain the vision that their founder had. Therefore the Aveda reception space will be designed to reflect the believes and mission of the company has as a whole. Designing a unique organic reception desk that appears as to grow and be sustained from the ground as do trees. With a water pool and waterfall as a backdrop and a contrasting white marble wall. A wooden canopy is formed to connect the main reception to the working spaces and form a cohesive flow between the front and back of the building. The essence and atmosphere to be created is to take you away from a corporate environment and for a guest to be taken to a natural oasis.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Milk Gelato is designed to reflect the authenticity of gelato. It is easy to produce and sell gelato that comes prepackaged and give the impression that it is artisanal when in reality it is not.

Gelato should be fresh and made with all natural ingredients, no artificial flavoring or colors.

Using clean lines, simple and natural materials through out such as quartzite, slate, and wood would parallel that of the natural ingredients found in gelato. Color and texture in fabrics, tile, and vegetation embrace the unique and fresh flavors of artisanal gelato.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Given the existing shell and plan of a senior living facility the goal is to design for the user and thoughtfully arrange the program required within.The overall concept throughout the schematics was to utilize the vast outdoor space to the residents advantage. Being that the interior spaces were somewhat limited in space, using the outdoor space creatively could add a different dimension and efficiency creating a very stimulating senior living facility. Adding gardens, landscaping, and pathways through out would encourage the residents to move and increase their physical activity. It also increases the interaction between residents so that a community is formed. These exterior spaces can be an extension of the original buildings which also helps establish some of the adjacencies necessary. While still maintaining the connections needed throughout to facilitate living and making daily life more comfortable and enjoyable.

The space is a large open store front with a 19+ foot ceilings and a mezzanine level, a kitchen, ADA compliant public washrooms, employees washrooms and other utilities. The space was formerly used as a restaurant. Creating an elegant and glowing atmosphere by forming spaces within the building, a large vertical structure will be illuminated to create a lively ambiance.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The Ray Youth Center will place a focus on a simple mix of concrete and glass façade and a modern contemporary style. This will allow for the programs and message of the center to stand out. Bright colorful walls covered in bold colors and inspiring messages will illustrate the purpose and reflect the mission of the center. These bright colors will also serve as wayfinding as each space will have a distinct color palette that focuses on the activity taking place within and the mood it should invoke. A simple circulation path will envelop the central atrium that will not only provide natural daylight to the interior spaces but will provide a respite from the surrounding urbanity. This green space will be the contrasting focal point for all the activities happening in the rest of facility. A space that will remove the stressors of the day and provide somewhere to decompress and, take a breath, and provide a space for the development of the mental health of the visitors. The Ray Youth Center will be an encompassing environment for all to explore, feel inspired, safe, and accepted.

SOLUTION STATEMENT 1. Utility: Each space is specifically thought out to be able to accommodate for a multitude of activities. Each of the activity spaces has more then one use, therefore providing functionality within the design of the building.

2. Character: Due to all that is happening within the facility itself and the mental state of some of the people visiting the center a busy interior could become overwhelming. It is important to keep the overall design simple, yet by bringing in imagery and thoughtful placement of color we can hint at the emotions and mood of each user.

3. Environmental Design/LEED: The implementation of sustainable design in this facility will allow for lower utility costs which will in return supplement the activities held within the center. Being that this is a non-profit facility funding can be used towards programs and assisting visitors rather than utilities and high maintenance materials. Inclusion of sustainability can also be used to teach youth visiting the center on practicing more sustainable life habits.

4. Security System: Due to the profile of the center it will be important to have security throughout the entire building. Cameras will be necessary both outside and inside of the facility. All entry ways besides the main entry and entry through the therapy space will need to be accessible with card readers only. The staff will require card reader access. Security personal will be needed at the two main entry ways; the reception area and the therapy space entrance.

5. Flooring Selection: All spaces through out the building will be high traffic especially the public spaces. These will require high durability and easy cleanability options such as: PVT or LVT, carpet in some spaces that need a softer surface, and linoleum flooring for the gymnasium.

6. Acoustics: Therapist office, performance space, and the gym will all require additional acoustical insulation to reduce sound interference.
