It’s Showtime!! After another year of planning, the time has arrived to put your wares on display. Be it plants, photos, the pet rabbit or grandma’s family secret recipes. The Yankalilla Show is a fantastic fun day for the family. Make sure you head down as it is sure to be a great day for all.

Big congratulations to Brooke and Luke Hutt, they are now the proud parents of a gorgeous baby boy - Toby Austin Hutt, good job!

Leonards Mill is re-opening mid September.

As you can see by the advert on page 2 it is hoped to be up and running mid September.

Hopefully things will all go well and we wish the new owner/head chef Steve and family all the best. We look forward to heading down for a taste test.

It seems that BRRA and the Council are playing nice at the moment. Could it be that the most recent meeting had a couple of key members missing. By all reports it was a productive session, which is quite refreshing

Bungala Residents and Ratepayers Assoc. Inc. Update

T

he BRAA meeting held on the 1st of August was chaired by Mr. A. Mills and attended

by Mayor Peter Whitford and Councillor Mandy Aistrope. It was a fruitful meeting where local issues were discussed and noted by Councillors.

It is the aim of The Bungala Residents and Ratepayers Association to become a positive force regarding development within the Bungala Ward. Also to forge relationships and formulate directions in a positive manner which is beneficial to the future of the community.

YANKALILLA LADIES PROBUS

n her childhood Elsie Hadcroft's Sunday school was visited by an old missionary who'd worked in India. Inspired by his stories, Elsie decided she wanted to be a missionary herself but it wasn't until she was in her fifties that it became a reality. At our July meeting Elsie shared her experiences as a missionary in a country where the extreme poverty is a culture shock.

On her first journey in 1983 Elsie sang with a Crusade group, travelling from the north of India to the south. Drawn to the children, she used a toy koala when telling them about our South Australian bushfires and the saving of some koalas, telling it as a fable. The children's response to Elsie's story increased her confidence, but on returning home she had dysentery and thought she didn't ever want to go back to India.

When, in 1995, Elsie joined with three other church members to sponsor an Indian child, her enthusiasm was renewed. Elsie travelled with a church group to Sankarapuram to visit Christ's Special School for crippled children where the children were cared for and educated, in contrast with the crippled people Elsie had seen crawling along the streets in other parts of the country. Elsie eventually sponsored one of the girls, now 18, who is doing a computer course in preparation for becoming a teacher. Elsie's group provided enough money for seven wheelchairs which operate like cycles and cost $200 each. On returning home Elsie raised enough money from garage sales to buy 80 sleeping mats and 3 wheelchairs. On subsequent trips she has taken exercise books, stamps, stickers and balloons. The balloons too precious to be blown up, the children inflate them only a little, then let them down and keep them in their pockets. Also in Sankapurum is the leprosy mission to which Elsie's mission provides rice and money.

In Rajahmundry Elsie visits the Naioth children's home where 340 orphans, well fed and educated, are supported by a Melbourne church. Saddest of all is the children's prison

she visits, most of its ‘inmates’ homeless orphans arrested for stealing food on the street, those without parents remaining there till they are 18. Some of these children are untouchables, “untouchables” are not allowed in schools or temples, and are not permitted to have jobs; they spend their lives begging and living on the street.

Elsie's missionary group includes electricians, doctors, plasterers, welders and others.

Through their work and generosity they bring love and a better chance in life to many who would otherwise miss out. The money raised outside India can go a long way. Elsie told us that fifteen schools were set up in East India from funds raised by the auctioning of a dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the film ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's’. ‘Inside India the very rich don't help the poor,’ says Elsie. ‘Their poverty is their Karma’.

OXFAM AUSTRALIA – HUMAN RACE EVENT UPDATE

xfam Australia is organising a ‘HUMAN RACE’ at the Victor Harbor Harness Race track on Sunday 30 September of the long weekend in October between 10am and 4pm. People, not horses will pull the Gigs in races on the day.

Get ready for a great fun day get a team together and pull a gig for this great cause!

You will need at least 2 people and a maximum of 4 to pull the gigs, with a Mascot on board as “driver”. [No humans or animals are to sit on the gigs] There will be shorter fun races, and some longer ones for the more serious competitors.

Points will be awarded for the best mascot and for the best fancy dress, as well as for winning, in the shorter races.

You don’t have to be fast -just be different. So get organised for this fun day.

It will be a Combined Charities Event and a full day of activities is planned. Admission will be $5.00 Adults and $3.00 children NO DOGS ANIMALS or

ALCOHOL ALLOWED IN THE GROUNDS Emergency services will be in attendance on the day.

We have sports clubs, fitness centres, medical staff and the business community already getting their teams organised, so get your team entry form now.

Other activities planned include Music and Entertainment in the pavilion, food stalls, retail stalls, and a Monster Trash and Treasure, plus Amusements, and a Flypast by the Warbirds of Goolwa Airport!

Oxfam will be the overall coordinator and is organising the day.

All registered Charities are invited to set up their display, tent, or stall, at no charge, to raise money for their charity.

Stalls will be located in the modern horse stables and outside on the grassed area. There is plenty of room for tents, marquees, or vans.

couple of local residents have just completed renovating a tired relocatable home in Carrickalinga and turned it into a model environmental home.

The house is one of 15, open as part of Sustainable House Day - now in its 6th year. This is a national event organised by the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZSES).

The aim of Sustainable House Day is to show just how simple it is to build or renovate a home that requires virtually no heating or cooling other than that provided by the sun and environment.

The owners have converted an old beach house which was clad in asbestos, poorly insulated and did not integrate with the cherished garden.

They appointed architect Warwick O’Brien to design additions and alterations to provide a sustainable living environment that integrates the landscape into the design. Major revamping of the interior has also transformed the entire living environment so that it is efficient, attractive and sustainable.

This is just one of fifteen homes that will be open in the Adelaide Metropolitan and SA Country areas from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 9th September.

Some of Australia's most energy efficient homes will be showcased.

Energy efficiency, thermal mass, heat storage and release, summer ventilation control and overall design-for-comfort are some of the many beneficial aspects of passive solar design. These will all be on show on Sustainable House Day. Solar hot water systems and solar photovoltaic systems will also be on display with information about government rebate schemes.

So head along to La Ronde Crescent, Carrickalinga and follow the signs to see the property on Sunday 9th September. Then make a day of visiting other homes open at the Aldinga Eco Village. YANKALILLA TENNIS CLUB Calling all tennis players t is hard to imagine that the tennis season is just around the corner and it is time to let us know that you will be playing. After our successful season last year, we are hoping to continue with more achievements this year. New players are always welcome, whether you have played before or a beginner.

YANKALILLA MUSEUM

his year the Yankalilla Museum celebrates its twenty-first year of operation. At our Annual General Meeting Adrian Lush gave us a rundown on the museum's history, from its inception in 1986 when South Australia's sesquicentenary (150 years) was celebrated.

Here in Yankalilla the celebrations focused on a re-enactment of activities typical of the district during its early years when South Australia was considered the nation's granary. At that time South Australia was producing more wheat than the rest of Australia combined. For the re-enactment, seed was sown at Carrickalinga, then harvested, threshed and bagged in the ‘old way’. It was then loaded onto a dray drawn by draught horses and taken to the jetty.

There, it was loaded into a boat which was rowed out into Lady Bay, where the Falie was anchored. Following the re-enactment there was a farm implement display. When it was all over, farm machinery and implements were left around. Someone said, ‘Let's have a museum!’, and the collection of historical items began.

Yankalilla museum has one of the best collections of any country museum, and is the only one known to have a complete church on site i.e. St. Thomas’s church, behind the main building.

With the Information Centre coming on site, (the building contract is likely to be let in the next few months), it is expected that the Museum will be open daily. The Museum’s plans for an Indigenous display of Aboriginal history and culture has gained the support of Yankalilla Council and we are now in the process of applying for a grant through the Kaurna Heritage Centre. The display’s objectives are to promote reconciliation, education and cultural awareness of this district’s rich Kaurna history. One example of this history is the Tjilbruke Dreaming story with its significant sites, not to mention other hunting, ceremonial and camp sites in the district.

The Yankalilla Museum is open on Sundays, from 1pm.

Big Day Out

tudents, parents and the communit y celebrated Come Out and Book Fair on May 11th with a BIG DAY OUT in the school grounds. Children (& some parents) let their imaginations run wild and dressed in the theme of “Once upon a Time” for Come Out and the library was decorated as a rainforest for the Book Fair’s theme of a “Rainforest of Reading.” During the day the children, visitors and Fund Raising ran an art gallery, stalls and activities. It was great to see so many visitors, join us to create “the longest Macarena line on the Fleurieu” and surprise us with their moves! A delicious lunch was prepared by the Fund Raising Committee with the help of Ian Cole on the BBQ. In the afternoon, visitors were treated to student performances which included plays, dance and singing—much of which was entirely student generated. In all a fantastic day was had by all.

Netball Carnival

irls and parents from years 4-7 travelled to Strathalbyn on May 25th for the Netball Carnival. After much training and support from Lisa Wait and Tracey Eatts, the girls had a great day and managed to win 3 of their 4 games. It was a wonderful experience for the girls, a few of whom had never played before. Many thanks must go to Jackie True who accompanied us on the day as our umpire.

Adelaide Visit

tudents travelled to Adelaide on Thursday May 31st for a day out in the city. The younger students visited the Zoo while the 4-7’s viewed the Egyptian Display at the Art Gallery. After this, it was a visit to the Botanic Gardens to follow the Egyptian Trail and then on to the Seahorse Farm. This would have to have been the favourite part of the day.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind and we got a little wet, but all agreed that it was a very worthwhile and enjoyable day.

Healthy Harold Day

n Friday, 8th June, after a week of healthy eating, students and teachers joined in a shared healthy lunch and

fundraiser for Life Education.

Children wore casual dress on the day and made Harold the Giraffe’s neck “grow” with their gold coins.

Swimming Lessons

W

hat a great benefit the students are getting from the swimming lessons at Victor Harbor this year. It has been great to see the confidence and the competence of the students growing daily. It has been wonderful to watch students who wouldn’t put their faces in the water disappearing underneath and reappearing with no distress – and obviously enjoying it.

Others are improving their strokes, building their fitness, learning to dive and enter the water safely, although there may be some “sore bellies” along the way. The pool may have even needed some topping up after some of the dives! Comments from the instructors were most positive. They have been very impressed with the confidence of the students in the water and their willingness to listen and learn.

Overall, it is a great compliment to the students, the school and the values of the community. Those students who have not attended have really missed out on a great learning experience. The Year 6/7 students having had their Aquatics earlier in the year have been learning some valuable life skills with Denise over this time.

They have been preparing meals – and cleaning up afterwards. I’m not sure which is the more valuable!!?

The Incredible Computer

C

omputers and motor cars have probably changed our lifestyle more than anything.

Learning to use a computer is a challenge for the oldies but, for young people, it’s as simple as pulling on their socks.

The internet connects us to the world.

We can buy and sell, do our banking, talk to our friends and learn almost everything about anything.

One day I discovered an incredible message on our computer. The keys and icons seemed to have something special to say. This is what I noticed:

‘ENTER’ What a marvellous key. Identify what you need and then press enter – and presto! – it’s there. This is the key that calls it into being. It speaks to me of omnipotence.

Do you think about the mystery of the universe – how it got there? Where did all the wonders of our spectacular planet emanate from? We hear about the ‘Big Bang’ – now the ‘Big Bounce’ and other things.

I believe the universe was brought into being by the omnipotent fiat of Almighty God. It’s like God pressed ‘Enter’ and there it was – the universe in all its splendour.

Maybe it was a big bang – but, a God directed bang. How otherwise could we account for the precision of planets, the make up of metals, and the complexities of life?

The Bible speaks of omnipotence, e.g.

Heb 11:3: ‘By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.’

‘DELETE’ – a very helpful key. Simply highlight what is undesirable and press ‘delete’ and, in a blink, it’s gone.

Erasure is swift and simple on the computer. The Bible, too, speaks of erasure that is even more spectacular.

We goof up a lot and tarnish our

character. Personal foul ups take the joy out of living. Its one thing to delete the unwanted from a computer document but how do we erase bad things from our lives?

There’s an incredible verse in the book of Psalms. It says: ‘…as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.’

Ps 103:12 How far is East from West? It’s a mighty long way!!

It’s through Jesus that God provides erasure for our wrongs. Jesus did no wrong. A bad thought never entered his mind. His nature and character were perfect.

If you struggle with guilt and failure ask the Lord to forgive you and provide a new page for your life.

‘SAVE’ Once I typed for hours and in a split second lost everything. I hadn’t pressed ‘Save.’ Now I activate it every few seconds.

‘Save’ is the great theme of the Bible.

Jesus said that his mission to men was to ‘seek and save that which was lost.’

The Bible says, ‘That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.’ Rom 10:9 How can we be ‘saved’? Simply by repenting of our sin and believing in our heart that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead.’

On the computer screen I move the curser to a tiny icon and click on it. It activates ‘save.’ Similarly we direct the curser of faith to the cross of Jesus where he died to be our saviour and in an instant God saves us to his hard drive.

Like the computer God’s salvation is instant and permanent.

No matter what kind of a person we have been, or are right now, God wants to save us. You can activate

‘SAVE’ in your life by accepting Jesus and be saved for all eternity.

‘WORKS’ This word appears a lot on my screen.

It’s a word that appears in the Bible a lot. Christians are urged to do good works – selflessly giving to and helping others and serving God. The Bible however, warns about the mindset that thinks that merely by doing good we can earn favour with God. We can’t as Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us. Good works should follow on from being saved – not being seen as a pre-requisite for salvation.

In our darkest corridors we must look for that light shaft and escape to God’s freedom in Jesus. This is true escape. Jesus said, ‘I am the light of the world, those who follow me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.’

ESCAPE - a vital key! Sometimes you get locked in and you can’t get out.

That’s the reason for the ‘escape’ key.

There’s a verse in the Bible that says, ‘How shall we escape?’ We get locked into life situations from which we’d do anything to escape from.

When working in the desert in Jordan a number of folk asked me to see what they could do to escape to Aus t ra li a. We’ ve s een w ha t desperations the ‘boat people’ will endure to escape to our great south land.

Many want to escape from bad relationships, others from debilitating drug habits, some from a life of crime and jail, many from oppressions, etc.

The Bible says, ‘…how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?’ Heb 2:3.

I have one of those amazing little creatures called a ferret. He chases rabbits out of their holes. You hear rumbles underground and watch expectantly at the nets.

Bunnies, however, are smart.

Sometimes they run out a concealed hole covered by leaves.

Pursued by the predator they look for the tiny shafts of light that alert them to the place of escape and out they dash to freedom.

YANKALILLA BOWLING CLUB

ts now September and spring and the spring should be in the step of bowlers. We have our Club Opening Day on Sunday 16th September by Michael Pengelly and our President Mr David McMartin is hoping for a big turnout. We are still hoping for new members to fill both our men's and ladies teams so if anyone is interested please contact the club or any club member to find out more. Club finances are always a concern so anyone who has not renewed their “subs” for the ensuing season Treasurer Fraser Ahrendt would more than welcome seeing them. On Thursday 13th September the lady bowlers of our Club will be given the award of Pennant Presentation

which they won last season. This will be made by Coralie Law one of our lady bowlers who is the President of the Southern Women's Bowling Association.

Also the same evening John Stone will be honoured with the first medal for Champion of Champions in Region 7 area at the Willunga Bowling Club. So there you are bowlers, new bowlers and night owlers get your spurs on and look forward to a successful summer both ladies and men.

Condolences to Ian Luke on his very sad loss, a beautiful lady, also sickness is plaguing Malcolm Hill and Tournament Director Lou Whittlesea we wish them a speedy healthy recovery.

July storm damage minimised…but extreme care needed

he high tide and strong winds of July 4th resulted in damage and erosion along much of the South Australian coast. It was a remarkable experience to witness the waves pounding the dunes, tearing away at the many years of sand deposit and vegetation growth. In the aftermath we have several high cutaways along the foredune and the loss of the protective sand buffers against future storm and high tide events.

In the Yankalilla Bay area we are extremely fortunate that the damage was not worse.

As acknowledged to Council by the Coast Protection Branch of Department for Environment and Heritage, this is largely the result of the many years (13 to be exact) of on-ground and policy work by people involved in the Yankalilla Bay Dune Care Group, Myponga Beach Management Group and the Yankalilla District Dunes Advisory Committee to Council, aided more recently by a number of Green Corps teams.

revegetation and education meant that the dunes were in good condition and were able withstand this considerable storm and tide event. Significant lengths of foredune had been allowed and encouraged to build up over several years and, as expected, were eventually sacrificed in the protection of the bulk of the dune system and property behind.

The danger now is that the dunes will not have time to build up in a similar way before the next event. If this is the case, they will quickly erode back to the road and housing developments that lie very close behind.

I urge everyone to take responsibility for keeping away from the sheer faces and eroded dune embankments. Only by people keeping off these areas will they have a chance to regenerate and build up again in order to protect the system behind. Over the next few months the sand lying out to sea will gradually be washed back onto the beach, and must be allowed to stabilise and the vegetation grow.

The dunes are extremely vulnerable now, and rather than expend great time and money in great lengths of fencing, it would be preferable that the community, both local and tourist, have the sense and foresight to leave these areas well alone.

I am very proud of the hard work carried out over the years by the dune groups, community and Council and fervently hope that everyone will value and respect the magnificent, and fragile, coastline in our stewardship.

L E T T E R S Re: Yankalilla Council Amalgamation/Budget refer to your recent edition “August 2007”, page 35, which addresses the Bungala Amalgamation Proposal and then the 2007/08 budget.

The page cites a schedule that claims that it “shows that the District Council of Yankalilla rating levels are comparable with those of its surrounding Councils and those within the metropolitan area”.

The schedule cites Yankalilla Council as having “ 2005/06 average rates” paid as $964.00 and Unley “2005/06 average rates” paid as $1,148.00.

The authors of the claims and schedule are Mayor Cr. Peter Whitford and Chief Executive Roger Sweetman.

In the second article on this page – the Budget- it is claimed that: “ Exceptional growth within our district of 4.3% has allowed Council to retain the urban rate in the dollar at the previous year’s figure of 0.4227 in the dollar” I am sure neither author meant to make misleading claims but so the community might be informed I point out that they have published two pieces of misinformation.

That Yankalilla Council rates at comparable levels as evidenced by the “average rates paid ” schedule.

Council’s do not set rates by “average rates paid.” It is an artificial and misleading concept.

The Ad Valorem taxation process (rating) is a tax based on property values and the amount to be collected is set by an annual budget determined by the Council.

This means that for the claim that “rating levels are comparable with those of surrounding Councils” to be valid, the properties under review would be taxed (rated) at equivalent amounts (cents in the dollar) to achieve the equivalent services.

This is not the case. I have properties in Unley and Second Valley. My property in Unley is valued at twice the amount of Second Valley, yet I pay more in rates to the Yankalilla Council.

This translates, in simple terms, to me paying almost twice as much for my property at Second Valley.

This is not comparable or equivalent as claimed, particularly as I paid almost to the dollar the amount cited in the schedule for my Unley property.

Double is not comparable and to disguise the incomparability with

the term “average rate paid”, when no calculation should be used in setting a rate is extremely misleading.

To retain the rate in the dollar is a good thing when growth is at 4.3% as there is no impact on the rate payer I assume that if there is growth of 4.3%, then the property values and/ or the Council-rating base has increased by that much.

Under the rating, system that means that if the rate in the dollar stays the same as last year, the rates have effectively increased by 4.3%, let alone the impact of increase property values.

In Unley, the rate in the dollar has fallen in ever y year th at development growth occurred for the last decade.

In terms of the previous argument, it is not comparable.

It is not valid to claim “The unprecedented development growth in the district of 4.3% has provided Council with the funds to undertake new initiatives and projects without a substantial impact on the individual ratepayers.”

The growth has not provided the funds; the retention of the last year’s rate in the dollar has provided the money.

For the growth to provide the money, the rate in the dollar would have to drop so that the rate per property would be equivalent to last year’s costs. This has not happened.

The individual rate payer is funding the new initiatives and this is quite an impact on the individual ratepayer – 4.5 % + My issue is not that of “amalgamate or not” but rather that the publishing of such misleading claims and using such fatuous statistical concepts of “average rates paid’ is to undermine the understanding of rates. For most of the last decade local government has been seeking to explain rates and to clearly distinguish that rates are set by an annual spending budget that creates a tax that is levied against property values.

When understood and applied wisely, it can be a responsive and responsible form of taxation.

This makes it a distinct form of taxation to the State Government’s stamp duty, environment and other levies, payroll and land tax, which are straight percentage levies.

Many of which are new and have no relationship to the actual consideration by a Council of its budget, local community expectations and property values.

administration to mix Ad Valorem taxation (rates) with such taxes as land tax, so that the community is confused and comes to lay the blame on local government for tax imposts.

The Mayor and Chief Executive Officer, with their many years of experience and many battles for local government and the integrity of its taxation base know this, or should know this, and should not debase the currency with this article and its claims.

I ask them to be less glib in their statements so that the 10,000 or more readers of your fine paper better understand the achievements of local government and the challenges it faces in meeting community expectations.

The honest statement that should have been made is that the Yankalilla ratepayer does not pay comparable rates – nor should they, each Council has its own priorities set by its community. It is also a fact that Yankalilla ratepayers pay more than the Unley ratepayer.

However, the Yankalilla community and I have repeatedly voted to have those taxes because we have voted for people to provide us with a range of services.

If this is not the case, then why have a Yankalilla Council?

Again, the simple and honest fact is that if I want my Yankalilla rates lower, then I am going to get a lot less in services and if I want that, then I should get elected, not look to some back door way of achieving such aims.

I make the final point that as far as I know, no Council amalgamation has ever seen lower rates and more services - amalgamations where they are supported, achieve other things.

just received a copy of the neatest little book called “Business Security & Safety”. It arrived courtesy of the South Australia Police, but not the usual way I get communications from them. To get your copy, give the Crime Reduction Section a call on telephone 8204 2430.

Why do I think it worth more than a browse? All the advice is the sort of good, practical common-sens e t hat gets forgotten in the hustle and bustle of everyday business. Issues range from computer, mobile phone and vehicle security through to retail theft, credit card fraud and workplace violence. An oversight or mistake in any of these areas can

This is the ninth biennial quilt auction to be held in Yankalilla in conjunction with the Fleurieu Quilt Exhibition.

The exhibition is to be held in the Jubilee Hall, Yankalilla Area School on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September 2007.

The auction commences at 2pm on Sunday 30th September 2007.

Charity quilt auctions of this type are unique to the Lions Club of Yankalilla and Districts and are modelled on charity quilt auctions held by Amish and Mennonite communities in the USA and Canada.

GALLERY 88 and YANKALILLA ART GROUP Yankalilla Art Group Once again our invited art tutor has delivered the goods. Terry Lewitzkas’ session proved to be one of the best for understandable information on the techniques of oil painting, in particular the manipulation of colour. It was very interesting to hear from Terry himself, the fascination he has with colour making and blending it to suit the atmosphere of each different painting. It was obvious that Terry is a ‘thinking’ painter who takes a great deal of trouble with his pallet and the preparation of his equipment. (My pitfalls hence disappointing results. After this session there might be a light at the end of the tunnel for me so far, however, my particular light seems to have blown a fuse. ) It was a delight to watch Terry demonstrate his skills on a small scene he had sketched of the landscape across from the Agricultural Hall before the session began.

Once we began painting his individual help on composition, positioning, light, shade and, of course, on the use of colour was most welcome. We are pleased to say that he will be available for four local workshops on oil painting between now and November and that he has agreed to return for a session in 2008. Terry is a prolific painter and has work exhibited and admired all over the world. I am hoping that some of his ability and love of oil painting will have rubbed off on us.

Art Exhibition

ankalilla residents will be interested to know that Joy Davey (nee Lush) is holding an exhibition of her paintings from Thursday 20th September to Sunday 23rd September at the Hahndorf Institute in the main street of the town.

The exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 4 pm. Parking is available behind the Institute, via Auricht Road.

Joy began her lifelong interest in art while living on the family farm at Inman Valley. Her initial training was undertaken with Glen Stephens who took Joy on many outdoor painting excursions in the Inman River area near Glacier Rock. Joy’s love of painting has led her to join local art groups on Yorke Peninsula, where she now lives, and to exhibit in many art shows throughout SA. On display at the exhibition will be a selection of Joy’s recent works in acrylic, watercolour and oils. Also on display will be other artworks, including photography, by family members Philip Davey, Rosalie Lewis, Melinda Chapman and Emily Lewis.

The $5 admission charge includes tea/coffee and scones. All profits will go to World Vision projects to alleviate hunger and poverty in children.

Six Barbara Robertson paintings sold so far at Yankalilla exhibition

aintings by Carrickalinga Artist Barbara Robertson sold well at the recent exhibition marking the 150th celebrations of Christ Church Yankalilla.

Six have gone out of the district, five to hang in various Anglican Nursing Home Chapels and one in a private collection, while several locals are still interested in buying some of these extraordinary religious works.

People wanting to view or purchase paintings can contact John Morgan, Parish Secretary, on 8558 3353.

Photographic sessions are occurring in order to record a range of Robertson’s works for selection for a book of her life and painting achievements.

resident Glenda welcomed eleven members to the August meeting.

The roll call was your favourite recipe with many nice recipes coming forth. During the business part of the meeting it was mentioned that $3,500 was raised for the South Australian Country Women's Association Emergency Aid Fund - (drought appeal) through a concert “Our Sunburnt Land” held in Victor Harbor of which many local people attended and supported. Well done to Victor Harbor CWA choir for their efforts. Our branch decided to give sponsorship towards prizes for the Yankalilla Show again this year. Four members have offered their time to work at the SA CWA Country Café at the Royal Adelaide Show. A busy week for CWA members but a rewarding outcome.

Several members will attend the Myponga Daffodil Day on August 22nd. Our speaker for the meeting was Shirley Jones who reported on the ACWW World Conference in Finland for 2007 of which 71 countries were represented and over 600 women attended. Topics discussed and resolutions passed were Status of women - as entrepreneurs in politics, Environmental changes - earth rising in Europe, especially in Scandinavia, Water/poverty, Obesity, Germany practical skills, Millennium goals, Diabetes and Child abuse. Also Shirley gave the summary profiles of projects supported by ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) from its Tsunami Disaster Fund. Approximately $370,000 was distributed to countries such as India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. In the South West Pacific Area of which Australia is the main contributor approximately $14,500 was distributed. Our monthly flower competition was well supported with the camellia flower being the flower of the month as our winner Anna Rola, 2nd Naola March, 3rd Cathy Reid all had camellia flowers entered. Handicraft meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1.30pm and our next meeting is September 5th at 1.30pm. Roll call is name and occupation of your father and bring a photo of your father.

YANKALILLA AREA SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE Throughout this year the year 8/9 students have participated in Community Service.

This is a chance for all students to ‘give back’ to the community by offering their time and services to various community groups.

Students have to sign a Code of Conduct designed to uphold our school core values of Respect, Care, Excellence, Honesty and Responsibility before being allowed to work in the community.

One group this term has designed a park bench and the students are now learning new skills, such as welding, to construct it.

Other students have worked in the kindergarten, the Council and The Resource Catchment Centre as well as cleaning up the beach and the various parks in the Yankalilla and Normanville areas. Last term a group of girls visited the elderly at the Aged Care Centre and even started a UNO card group.

We have had a great deal of positive feedback from the groups and individuals supervising these students ranging from ‘caring nature’ to ‘enthusiastic with a good positive outlook’ and ‘caring, polite and thoughtful’. The positive feedback from the students themselves indicate that they have enjoyed their volunteering and felt enriched by their experience.

If you know of anyone who could use a helping hand (e.g. weeding an elderly citizen’s garden) please contact the school on 85580888 and pass on this information.

WHAT A ZOO On Thursday 26th July the Reception to Year2/3 classes visited the Adelaide Zoo. The excursion was a culmination of cultural studies undertaken by each of the four classes. Students learnt about the variety of animals that live in different countries.

Teaching staff and children were grateful to have many parents join the outing. The weather was just perfect which contributed to a perfect day.

Mrs. Taylor’s year 1/2 class have jointly constructed a recount of their day: We went to the zoo.

First we hopped on the bus.

After a long trip we were there.

We met our mums and got into groups.

The animals were amazing. We liked their homes.

Our favourite animals were the monkeys.

It was a fun day.

WHO IS NEW We welcome five new reception students to the school: Tillie, Maddy, Blake, Ryley and Tyson.

They join the other reception students in Mrs. Putland and Mrs. Warwick’s classes.

ankalilla Area School has created an edible garden and wants community volunteers to come to a regular Edible Garden Community Day every Wednesday.

Over the past year, Yankalilla Area School students have been working with teachers, local artists, restranteurs’, farmers and community people to create an impressive edible garden.

Mark Pearse has created a Lizard Sculpture Garden; Ken Hodgson has been working with the students on a weekly basis; Len Ward is working with the olives; Andrew Munn helped the students paint murals on sheds; Wally Pillen is developing an aquaculture facility; Phil Noel is assisting with an edible, indigenous garden; Colleen McLeod is teaching cooking and advising on the design and construction of the garden. She also regularly works with students in the garden.

Colleen McLeod of Lilla’s says that “the aim of the edible garden program is to teach students to grow and care for fresh vegies and herbs and then to harvest and to cook with what we’ve grown and sit down and eat at a shared table”.

So far the students have developed an impressive array of skills including preparing garden beds, planting, fertilising, organic gardening, harvesting, water conservation, glass house growing and researching menus and cooking the produce of the garden.

Currently, the garden is producing broccoli, broad beans, radishes, chilli, garlic, spring onion, citrus fruits, parsley, vines, olives and free range eggs. Sheep, cows and goats are an attractive addition to the landscape.

Earlier this year a competition was held to develop a logo for the garden and was won by Joel Guilder of Grade 5. Other student activities have included school lunches in the garden, camps, workshops and sleepovers.

Edible School Garden Community Day is every Wednesday and volunteers with special skills or a willingness to help students are advised to call Trudy Noack on 8558 0888. Community volunteers will need to check in when they arrive.

SEA RESCUE SQUADRON (WIRRINA FLOTILLA)

t has been a fairly quiet month with only one small incident to report. The weather has left a lot to be desired with only the keenest amateur fishermen going out. From what I hear those that have ventured out have been rewarded with some reasonable catches, although a bit patchy. The rumour mill has been churning out copious amounts of gossip about the Wirrina Marina and Resort and also the return of the KI ferry to its old mooring. The ferry rumour has turned out to be correct and it is up and running again to the Island. Lets all hope that this time it works. The rumours about the change of ownership of the resort and the Marina are

at this stage still only gossip, but if my sources of information are correct there could be some truth in it. I just hope that rumours relating to the Sea Rescue facility at Wirrina are rumours and nothing else.

We have put in thousands of volunteer labour to establish our rescue base, for the benefit of the public at no cost to the Marina Management. Lets hope that what I am hearing around the traps is just that, a rumour… In a major emergency, when it is a situation of life and death, response time is critical. I mentioned a couple of months ago that we were negotiating with various agencies for the installation of some lighting at the Wirrina ramp. I am happy to say that task has been successful and the solar powered lights are under construction due for delivery shortly. But wait for it, there is another rumour: the ramp is going to be shifted. Where do we put the lights? I give up, or do I write a best seller on Wirrina. No one would believe it, or would they? It possibly is that I have a strange sense of humour!!

Fleurieu Scottish Country Dancers n Thursday 9th August the group helped Jean Leckie celebrate her 80th birthday. Jean has been part of the group almost since its inception and quickly became a well-loved and respected member. Jean attends regularly, braving all weathers and road conditions to be there. Several dancers who have moved from the district joined us for dancing some old favourites, and also one dance call “Four Score and More” which had been written to celebrate another dancer’s 85th birthday. As you can see Scottish Country Dancing can be enjoyed well into retirement!

After the dancing we enjoyed supper and a celebratory birthday cake and of course sang “Happy Birthday”. We all wish Jean “Many Happy Returns” and look forward to dancing at her 90th.

Tree Talk

T

he local ‘Save our trees’ group (we are still deciding on a name) has met four times. We are preparing a submission to Council as part of the Development Plan review. A register of trees in the local area will be developed. Many other activities are planned. Look for our message board at the show. Next meeting Friday 31 August, 6.30pm at the Ag Hall supper room. All welcome. Contact Karen Hammatt on 8558 2728 Letter read with interest the article in Jelfs Newsletter regarding ‘Save our trees’ and I thought you may like to know some history about the avenue of trees that are bordering the Main South Road at Wattle Flat near Bowyer’s bridge.

My father Ross Symonds was born at Wattle Flat in 1894 at the property then owned by William Knib Symonds who had a blacksmith shop and home on the right hand side just past Bowyer’s bridge (travelling south).

This property had been the first parcel of land my great grandfather John Symonds bought in 1863 so you can see the connection with Wattle Flat goes back a long time.

John Symonds was a school teacher, teaching firstly in this home and later, when a Govt school was built in 1867, he taught in this school for 18 years and resigned in 1881.

A living memorial to my great grandfather is this magnificent avenue of gum tress he planted lining the main road at Wattle Flat.

It is a miracle that this stand of trees have survived nearly 135 years and have been spared any District Council road widening activities and I hope and pray that they will be allowed to remain for many more years

to come.

They are a part of the history and heritage of our district as well as part of the Symonds history.

It is so sad to see so many of the things that belong to our past being destroyed. I know there has to be progress and that we can’t just stand still in time but sometimes you see things disappear for seems like no good reason and I just ask myself, ‘Why?’.

I hope this has been of some interest to your group and I wish you well in your endeavours to keep a watch over the district.

MOBILE MUSTER UPDATE The Resource Centre has recently received a certificate of appreciation from the MOBILE MUSTER thanking us for collecting 26kg of mobile phones, batteries and accessories for recycling between July 2006 and June 2007. THANK YOU to all of you who have contributed to this by dropping your mobile phones and accessories for

recycling at the centre. This is an ongoing campaign so keep bringing those mobiles and accessories to the centre and dropping them into the Mobile Muster recycling box. Australia wide, over the last 12 months in excess o f 8 6 ,00 0 kg o f recyclable materials have been collected by the Mobile Muster campaign – a 72% increase over the previous year. In total, more than 568,000 handsets and batteries and around 41,000kg of chargers and accessories have been collected. Mobile Muster organisers estimate that another 16 million handsets are currently stashed away in cupboards and drawers at home and work with many people replacing their handsets every 18-24 months. ANIMAL MATTERS TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF SPRAYING IN CATS

C

ats may spray urine indoors when under stress. The main aim of treatment is to reduce the perceived threat to the cat and make it feel more secure in its home territory, thus reducing its levels of arousal and curtailing the need to scent mark. Identifiable sources of stress should be removed, e.g. by excluding local rival cats from entering the home by blocking the cat flap or replacing it with a selective one.

Carefully introduced friendly routines of handling, feeding and playing will help give reassurance, providing such contact does not further alarm the cat at any stage.

In many cases there may be no single obvious threat and the cat's behaviour may be the result of the cumulative effect of several influences.

If such sources of stress cannot be removed or even fully identified the cat should be

provided with a safe haven of a small core territory of one room in the house to which it can safely retreat or be placed to relax without fear of disturbance for regular periods and where it should only feel the need to mark normally by rubbing and bunting.

Pheromone sprays and aerosol diffusers help to promote a sense of wellbeing and security. These products contain ingredients related to those produced by the facial glands.

Cats rubbing against corners and objects are marking them with a “friendly” scent, which establishes the object as their own. If the whole room has a “friendly” environment, the cat will be less stressed.

Often people simply become 'over-catted' - they enjoy their feline housemates and because one extra takes up little more physical space and is no more effort to feed, they will continue to collect more. This may be fine until a certain mix of characters just doesn't gel and relations within the group become strained and spraying begins.

sometimes certain individuals simply cannot share a home without stress and it may be better to re home one or more. Although this may not be a popular decision, it may be the only option if home hygiene is to be maintained as trying to manage the problems can be very difficult with a number of cats and associated variables.

Punishment should not be given as this is only likely to raise the cat's level of arousal and anxiety. You may feel angry and want to react if you catch the cat 'in the act', however, stopping all punishment and threatening behaviour is an essential first step towards improvement.

Placing food (dry food is best) or a bed at the base of spraying sites is often helpful at protecting those particular areas as cats are extremely reluctant to spray their own key resources, although they may simply move to other areas and mark there instead. Food and beds are also reassuring and may reduce anxiety.

Spraying can be triggered by the smell of previous marks so marked areas should be thoroughly cleaned (not with ammonia-based products as ammonia is a constituent of cat urine). A damp cloth should be used to remove any fresh urine marks and while some commercially available 'urine digester' products remove the smell (to the sensitivity of the human nose at least), there is little data on relative efficacy. An enzymatic or biological washing powder or liquid may be just as

effective at removing residues.

Follow this with agitation using a light brush with a low grade alcohol (test the colour fastness of material/carpets first).

Spraying is rarely effectively resolved by the use of drugs alone, without trying to ascertain the cause of the problem and without also employing management changes and behaviour modifications. Certain drugs can be used, based on a sound understanding of the problem and the effects of the drug on feline physiology. Drugs should alter a cat's mood to enable it to learn new forms of behaviour. The drugs should then be withdrawn.

F

ollowing our visit to other towns on the way including the Waterford factory crystal display, our tour of Ireland then proceeded to Waterville via Youghal, Cork and Killarney, famous for Killarney Castle and the Blarney stone.

First though, there was the call in at the Woollen mills where yours truly indulged in the purchase of a pure mohair beret.

At the time it seemed an extravagance but, proved to be invaluable for the weather we were to encounter for the next few days, how I relished my old parka and my new hat in the freezing conditions!

The array of the local Irish crafts, woollen products, and various cloths and tartans was very tempting certainly made choosing a difficult task.

However, it came down to budget and finances during all of our tours and visits to various o ut let s d i sp la yi n g t h eir indigenous wares and items.

There was great excitement among our fellow travellers, most of them in the older age group as we approached the entrance to Blarney and its famous ‘kissing’ stone high up on the crumbling castle battlements.

Already there was a huge queue snaking along the well worn path to the little tourist office and from there to the intricate positioning to at last kiss the famous stone.

We declined the pleasure of this well known event, instead opting to roam around the beautiful gardens, absorbing the

colourful splendour of the seasonal rhododendrons, magnificent in their proud display. This was much more enjoyable than lying on one’s back and worrying about germs and hygiene from others who had kissed that ‘stone’ previously.

For those who had ventured to follow their dream and kiss the ‘stone’, there was the added honour of receiving a certificate confirming they had in fact trekked to the top of the castle walls to complete this tourist attraction.

With all on board we left for this tiny quaint village stop where we had pea soup and homemade soda bread, just what the doctor ordered, very filling indeed.

Off again, this time to Killarney, a most pretty countryside, everything green (what other colour would one have?)

We saw stacks of peat logs drying in the sun, and the diggers busy at work dredging for more peat to be cut up and laid in rows to drain the moisture from. Peat is the most popular form of heating and cooking, hundreds of years old, and one could only wonder as to how much more was in the earth and what alternative would be used when supplies were exhausted.

En route to Waterville, the destination for that evening’s overnight accommodation, we passed Dingle Bay, the name suggesting something quaint, and very Irish sounding. From

the bus we had a view of a tranquil, quiet place to relax, however, not for us only a distant sighting as we passed.

Upon arrival at Waterville, the hosts warmly welcomed us and we had time for just a bit of a clean up before going into dinner.

After dinner, we were treated to a concert in the bar. The musical instruments were varied, consisting of a squeeze box, spoons, piano, and a violin, all played by local musicians with great gusto, even more so as their enthusiasm, talent and diversity was encouraged by many offers of free libations of their favoured drink encouraged them all the more.

At the bar, a drinker we took to be a local identity sat on a stool swaying and tapping his feet to the music, getting more into the spirit of the occasion in more ways than one, until he needed to be upheld by two mates who, in turn needed each other to maintain some modicum of respected demeanour.

By 10pm we had all retired to our rooms in anticipation of the travelling and places to see on the morrow, knowing we would be having an early start.

The next morning, following a filling breakfast as we had become used to, we boarded our trusty coach preparing to depart.

However, before we could leave, we were treated to a

farewell not to be experienced again right throughout any of our trips.

The accommodation we were leaving was run by a family – Mum, Dad, son and daughter.

They stood outside on the path in front of their door and, as if by some invisible conductor waving his wand and, in a synchronised fashion the family raised their arms and all waved together, a truly simple and, to us a sincere gesture.

This departure indicated we were now well into our schedule and our next sightseeing panorama was to be the picturesque Ring of Kerry.

However, once again I consider that this next little foray into foreign places should be kept until the next episode in our Irish tour.

e have been besieged, in recent weeks, with stories about the so-called ‘mortgage crisis’ in Australia. It’s certainly true that some families are struggling to pay off mortgages.

The media and others have blamed ‘governments’, the banks and financial institutions, the housing industry, and that includes the real estate industry and developers. It is true that all of these play a part, to a greater or lesser extent, in housing becoming less affordable. That is a separate issue.

I can certainly relate to the pain of those who default on mortgages.

But you have to ask yourself, ‘Why does it happen?’ I would imagine most of you who read this article will be able to recall buying their own home. We certainly can! We had to find something over 20% as the deposit. That was hard going, but it meant we had some equity in our home. We had to provide not just our pay details, but also our employment details. We had to provide credit details. Then we had to define all our outgoings for the household. Then we struck a repayment and term for the loan that allowed for interest increases.

Some of this may go on in today’s housing loan market.

However, what you and I know from the advertisements we see on TV is that loans are given with little equity. One advert using a prominent AFL coach, spruiks ‘No deposit’! Others offer the First Ho me Grant plus $1200— something less than 5% deposit.

Some lend 120% of valuation! It’s clear people are buying even modest homes with little or no equity and that means bigger repayments. Add on to this the ‘average’ credit card debt of $10 000 for every man woman and child and it’s easy to see how families can get into real trouble.

CORNERSTONE And this is without considering the cost of caring for a family. Credit in our nation is just too readily available.

What really drives this phenomenon? I think it is our desire to have it all at once. People no longer seem to be able to start small and work upwards as and when they can afford it. Many seem to want to outdo their friends and neighbours. Roz and I drove through a new development at Sellick’s Beach a few weeks ago.

The houses were all big houses and most were double story. There were no, what I would call, modest houses in the sub-division. There should be no shame in living in a house you can afford. What your friends and neighbours think is not part of the equation. What you can afford really is the equation.

The sad part of it all is that all this striving after the bigger and the better, the more lavish and ostentatious is futile. We had a reading from the book of Ecclesiastes in church a few weeks ago. The writer was telling his readers something that is still true today. It was that all the striving after more and more is a futile exercise. He said that when we leave the earth our striving will mean nothing and all we have will go to our descendants. The old adage is true: ‘You can’t take it with you when you die’. The message is about being prudent, about living within our means, about buying only what we can really afford. Gaining possessions and wealth just for the sake of it is not what God created us for. He created us to use our talents in his name, to be satisfied with a simple life, and to love our neighbours. If we were all financially prudent, interest rate rises might not occur.

Normanville Surf Life Saving Club News

W

inter may find some surf clubs in a hiatus but not Normanville SLSC. Al r e a d y t h e n e w committee is well in motion planning for what we believe will be a great season in 2007/08.

Our Club Captain Todd Scheer and Vice Captain Mick Shipard have been chosen to represent the club at the 2007 National Lifesaving Conference on the Gold Coast in September and later in the month we will host a visit by members of the Board of Management of Surf Lifesaving SA. We will also be arranging a display at the Yankalilla Show an Open Day at the club and other activities as the year unfolds.

One of the important functions in

2007/2008 will be the celebration of our Tenth Birthday. Our birthday party will be held in January and we will be attempting to contact all past members so that they can join us to celebrate and reminisce.

Many may not be aware but 2007 is the Year of The Lifesaver. In this year the Surf Lifesaving Association and its associated clubs celebrate 100 years of service to the Australian public. It is due to those clubs both big and small and their dedication that 500,000 lives have been saved since the first surf club was formed at Bondi in 1907.

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible

From what we have shown from scripture will not “every eye” see his glory as actually as the eyes that saw his humiliation and his blood?

Christ has promised that his followers shall receive glory and honour. Of what does glory and honour consist but in the deference and renown which rulers receive at the hands of those who are subject to them? He promises that “they shall laugh” (Luke 6:21); that “they shall inherit the earth” (Matt 5:5), that “they shall be comforted” (Matt 5:4); and that their enemies shall come and bow down at the soles of their feet” (Rev 3:9); that “they shall have power over the nations” (Rev 2:21). How are these promises to be fulfilled except by the “friends” of Christ “reigning with” him; possessing the earth with him, and exercising the authority with him over all peoples, nations and languages? Jesus has already told his 12 disciples that in that day they will be respectively enthroned over the 12 divisions of Israel (Luke 22:29,30; Matt 19:28).

He has in advance, placed Abraham, Isaac and Jacob there as conspicuous visible figures among all the prophets (Luke 13:28; Matt 8:11) The Lord by Isaiah, has planted his accepted servants of all past ages there (Read Isaiah 66:13,14; 25:6,9: 26:1,2,19).

All of these references show the practicality of the Kingdom that God will instigate in the earth at the return of Jesus Christ. (Read Psalm 2, and 72). To see this in all the fullness of force that belongs to it, it is necessary to realise the work that belongs to the second advent of Christ. In its briefest form it is this: to fill the earth with God’s Glory and remedy all the evils to which man is subject bringing righteousness and as a result world wide peace and security.

“They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 n our last article we reasonably concluded that the Lord Jesus Christ will sit physically in kingly glory upon earth and that this will be as actual and literal and practical and visible as we know the life of his first coming to have been? Let us continue to revue the barrage of evidence from the Bible in regard to this great event.

In regard to the visibility of these events we read that as far as the general wo rld pop ulace is concerned that “Every eye shall see him” (Rev 1:7). As far as the nobles of the earth are concerned that “Kings shall shut their mouths at him for that which had not been told them shall they SEE.” (Isaiah 52:15) “Thine eyes shall SEE the King in his beauty” (Isaiah 33:17).

In regard to the Jewish nation of Israel we are informed, “They shall look upon me whom they have pierced” (Zechariah 12:10). His visible presence will be seen in Jerusalem for “He shall reign on Mt Zion and in Jerusalem BEFORE his ancients gloriously” (Isaiah 24:23).

With these few references advanced you can clearly understand that the Kingdom of God spoken of in the scriptures is a global enterprise centred upon Jerusalem or Zion its capital and it is not some ethereal kingdom in the skies as conceived by the Church.

As much as Christ was “despised and rejected” at his first coming and was “bruised” and “put to grief” in a very open, visible and practical manner, we ask the question, is his glory to be less real? Less open to view? Less apparent? Will his honour be less actual than his shame? Will he occupy the throne in a less real and manifest sense than when he hung on the cross in the presence of jeering multitudes?

e are making good progress with the organisation of the Motorised Scooter Information and Awareness sessions planned for September. We are taking registrations now and it would be a help for the catering and seating arrangements to have people register their interest early to be sure they get a place, something to eat and the chance of a lovely door prize.

Anyone in Yankalilla who would like to attend is welcome to register and at no cost to them, a Genesis Tour and Charter bus will bus will pick up from the Senior Citizens Club at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday 20th September and take them to the session at Victor Harbor. They will be returned after lunch.

A number of significant representatives of the community have agreed to attend and lend their support to the sessions arranged to allow anyone interested in the use and operation of gophers.

We feel it is important for the safety of scooter users and other road users to understand the legal ramifications of the use of these “vehicles”.

There will be talks by specialist police regarding the use of motorised scooters on public highways and footpaths.

The Fleurieu Councils of Yankalilla, Victor Harbor and Alexandrina will be represented and will be on hand to talk about the efforts being made to assist gopher riders to get around their communities in relative safety and in reasonable comfort.

In making a decision as to whether one has a need or is able to use a motorised scooter it is necessary to be aware of all the hazards which may arise. So we have arranged for an Occupational Therapist from the Independent Living Centre to point out the safest way to go.

There will be a number of static displays by interested organisations with retailers specialising in motorised scooters will also be available to give advice on the many different types of scooter available to the would-be and current user.

I welcome enquiries especially from community groups and supporters of the programme.

ACH GROUP YANKALILLA CENTRE TURNS 5!!

oan Corbett, 92, was honoured to play a special part in the celebration for ACH Group’s Yankalilla Centre’s fifth birthday.

Joan, as the longest residing resident at Yankalilla Centre, was given the special task of cutting the birthday cake!

Joan moved to Yankalilla Centre just two days after the official opening in 2002 and is delighted to be able to stay on the Fleurieu Peninsula close to her family.

“Being close to my family is really important to me so they can visit regularly” said Joan.

“Yankalilla Centre is a lovely place to live It’s been just like home.”

Over 50 residents and their families enjoyed the birthday celebration together with ACH Group staff and volunteers and local MP Michael Pengilly, Member for Finnis.

The unseasonable warmer weather encouraged everyone to enjoy the sunshine and have their afternoon tea outdoors under the sails. In the weeks leading up to the occasion staff and residents created hats and flowers that added brightness and colour to the day!

Trees For Life needs more than 1000 Adelaide volunteers to help grow seedlings in their backyards.

T

hrough the award-winning Tree Scheme, volunteers are asked to raise the seedlings for landholders and revegetation projects in South Australia.

The Tree Scheme operates by annual seedling orders being taken for landholders, councils, government projects and private enterprise, with Trees For Life then linking up orders with volunteer growers.

Trees For Life, a not-for-profit organisation, provides all the propagation materials – seed varieties, tubes, boxes, soil and mulch – free to volunteers, along with easy-to-follow instructions.

Once sown and raised, volunteers then hand over their seedlings for planting in the winter months.

“The seedlings they grow provide food and habitat for our native wildlife, and help counteract some of South Australia’s Greenhouse gas emissions – which is especially important with climate change being such a concern,” Trees For Life spokesperson Tania Kearney said.

“Landholder orders for seedlings have come in strongly for the 2008 year, so it would seem there is renewed optimism about the future by landholders after a tough couple of years. We are again hoping our volunteers will raise around one million seedlings in a bid to help continue to revegetate SA.” All seedling varieties grown by Trees For Life volunteers are local natives. This means they are water efficient, adapted to local conditions, occur naturally and therefore have a higher survival rate, pose no risk of becoming weed species, provide homes for local fauna and restore local ecosystems.

“Volunteering to raise seedlings for our environment is such a rewarding experience.

You don’t need to have a green thumb – all

we ask is that growers have a sunny backyard and a commitment to looking after their seedlings during the summer months.

“Trees For Life provides everything – from all the equipment, to step-by-step instructions and personal advice if required. It’s a perfect way for people to do something positive to help our environment, it’s free and such a feel-good experience!”

“You do not have to live with pain”

NORMANVILLE PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC

L

ately, I have become more and more aware of the number of people in the community who are suffering unnecessarily with aches and pains. Many people are unaware of the role of a physiotherapist. Although all physiotherapists differ as to how they manage an individual problem, our aim is to relieve pain, preferably on a long term basis, and prevent reoccurrence. This may involve a home exercise program, or simple postural changes e.g. sleeping or sitting habits.

I have enjoyed working in this community for 16 years and now have been responsible for physio care of the residents in the nursing home for the past 5 years. I have been a physiotherapist for 32 years and have studied several courses over this time. They include the McKenzie techniques for treating the spine, especially for acute neck and low back problems, myofascial release and Bowen Therapy - a soft tissue manipulative therapy.

When I consult a patient, I will use the form of treatment I feel is most appropriate. Many of my patients enjoy Bowen Therapy, as it is gentle, subtle and non-intrusive, but can relieve pain long term and create a wonderful sense of well being.

Robin McKenzie is a New Zealand physiotherapist who has devised very simple exercises to relieve neck and back discomfort and has written books on the subject. These I will lend out to patients if necessary so they can fully understand their problem. His procedures are very simple to follow.

Myofascial release involves gentle hands-on techniques to release the connective tissue bound down to the muscle fibres and causing muscle tension and pain which leads to toxin build up.

Physiotherapy does not always have to be rough and forceful. People with arthritic joints, recent injuries or the elderly, need more gentle treatment to be effective. Manipulation of a joint YANKALILLA SENIOR CITIZENS HOUSING AGENCY INC
