Soccer at Yankalilla

S

occer training has started!

We are calling all interested people to come to training at the Yankalilla school oval.

Training commences at 4pm till 5.30pm on Mondays and Fridays, with practice matches on Sunday from 1pm.

Frank Azzopardi has had over 50 people ranging from children aged 6 to teenagers (boys and girls) and young adults aged to 40+ attending

training so far. We have had some goal posts made with netting to add to the experience. We would like to thank Richard King for all his efforts with the goals project.

We would also like to thank the Yankalilla school for allowing training and storage of the soccer goals on grounds. We are looking for sponsors so if you are interested in kick starting soccer at Yankalilla please phone Frank on 0408 898 214or 8598 4198.

The major issues this month seem to be the closure or non-closure of the Bower Road extension and the Council offices redevelopment. There is certainly a bunch of unhappy campers out there and the letters keep coming. Decisions on these issues should become more apparent next edition, after another Yankalilla Council meeting, or two? Or you may find out in the next Council newsletter when it is mailed to ratepayers.

Radio EFM at Victor Harbor has not been available in the Yankalilla area due to technical difficulties over the last few months. This situation is now being rectified with the erection of a new transponder at a new location.

Local sport is going well with both the Yankalilla netball girls and the senior men’s hockey making it to the finals.

It’s Show Time again! The 124th annual Yankalilla Show is on Saturday 30th September. This year it coincides with the AFL Grand Final, so the Show Society has hired a huge TV screen so you can go to the show and watch the final - by the bar - at the

same time! Who says men can’t do two things at once.

Happy 80th Birthday to Frank Jennings of Carrickalinga and Happy 90th birthday to Stan Putland of Normanville. Both long time local residents, we wish them well.

Thumbs up to both the Yankalilla Hotel and Leonards Mill Tavern for bringing back live music to the district. It has proven popular among the locals and brings a following of musically minded people in from surrounding areas as well. Live music will continue if it is supported, so don’t stay home, get out there and party!

Congratulations to everyone at Jelfs Normanville Newsagency, we received an award for “National Best Display” at the Connections with ACP awards for excellence, held in Maroochydore, Qld on 17th August.

That makes it six top awards in the six ACP Magazines conferences to date. Another trophy for the wall too!

Don’t forget Father’s Day on 3rd September.

Yankalilla Bay & Beyond Visitor Information Centre

ver 300 of the world’s and Australia’s classic cars will stop for at least thirty minutes at Yankalilla Oval on Friday 17 November 2006 between 9.30am and noon as part of the world renown Classic Adelaide Rally.

The event is free and everyone is welcome to come and witness a magnificent display of over $20 million worth of classic cars.

The Yankalilla stage of the rally starts at the top of the Myponga Dam wall and there will be safe vantage points marked out by the rally organisers closer to the start of the rally in November.

The District Council of Yankalilla and community service organisations are putting on a morning tea feast of local food and drink and entertainment to tempt drivers and spectators.

Community service organisations wishing to participate in the catering side to raise funds for their organisation should contact the Council at the numbers listed below.

Classic Adelaide engages the entire State as it brings the sight, sound and colour of a bygone era to the doorstep of more than a million people living within a 100km radius of Adelaide. A unique feature of the event, which has made it a favourite with the participants, is its 'hub' format.

Each day's course starts in the heart of the city and travels through some of South Australia's premier wine districts and tourism destinations such as Yankalilla Bay and Beyond enjoying a warm welcome from spectators along the route.

The rally returns each night to the Adelaide CBD allowing entrants to enjoy the best fine dining and hospitality made famous during the Adelaide Grand Prix era.

The Competition section is an international standard 'special stage' rally spanning four days, preceded by a field-seeding Prologue, with the classic rally cars and drivers racing the clock on almost 35 special stages on closed roads, with timing to the second.

The Competition incorporates three separate contests including Historic, for vehicles up to 1947, Classic for vehicles built between 1948 and 1971 and Late Classic for vehicles built between 1972 and 1990.

Automobile exotica such as the McLaren F1 three-seater, Ferrari F40’s, and certain Porsche, BMW and Mercedes high performance vehicles will be able to ‘strut their stuff’ at competition speed at this year’s Classic Adelaide.

‘The Classic organisers have developed a new category to allow certain vehicles that don’t fit the normal age and specification criteria to compete in this year’s event, that celebrates ten years of Classic Adelaide’, says Clerk of Course Rob Hemmings.

The new Category S is limited in number and entry is at the discretion of event organisers with vehicles to be fitted with full safety equipment (including roll over protection and racing harnesses) and the crews being required to wear helmets and driving suits.

‘Classic Adelaide is regarded as among the world’s best tarmac events, with fantastic roads and a heritage second to none. For some time now we have considered how we can accommodate more modern vehicles with a special pedigree without impinging on the spirit of the event and Category S is the answer’, says Hemmings.

ur guest speaker for July was Don Chapman from Yankalilla Council.

He described his role in the Council as Event management Services which includes the organisation of Events such as The Classic Car Rally, The Tour down under and the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, Manager of the Visitor Information Centre, and Tourism Development Officer. This includes developing a Tourism Strategic Plan as part of the Regional Development Plan. This plan is for the whole of the Fleurieu Peninsular Area.

Don then talked about the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival and how important it is to protect the environment of the Leafy Sea Dragon, the main problems being pollution, silt and fishing. For the success of a local event it is important to have good communication, lots of participation by the local community and good weather.

Don then showed us a video of the 2005 Leafy Sea Dragon Festival, which was really lovely. Members put forward suggestions for the marketing of the video and also gave lots of feedback on other aspects of Don’s talk, which Don welcomed.

It was very useful to have background information on events in the area and to know how much work is involved.

New Transmitter for E.FM

EFM apologises to all our listeners and supporters in the Yankalilla district for not being able to listen to community radio 5EFM through our remote transponder on 88.3 FM covering the Yankalilla District.

Since 1998 5EFM has been a tenant at the transmitter site of SAPOL (South Australian Police) and SAAS (South Australian Ambulance Service) located at Normanville heights on private property.

In mid 2005 both services gave notice that they were going to transfer to the SA Government’s new digital network by early 2006. The transfer was completed a week before Easter 2006. The

current land owner indicated that he had plans to redevelop the area where the transmitter site was located within 2 years. The land owner did not want the current lease arrangements renewed, so 5EFM at short notice had to look for a suitable location to re-locate our remote transponder. It has taken 3 months to negotiate a lease agreement with SA Water for 5EFM to relocate its transponder to SA Waters tank site at Normanville heights. The club has won $250 from the Bushell Community Cash program which was run throughout Australia. We collected tokens from the packaging of Bushell’s teabags.

Thanks to all who collected within the community, and for drinking Bushell’s tea for the past 6 months.

Good luck to coach Cathy Ellis and the girls who are playing down at Morphett Vale over the Summer months in the SUNA competition. The club hopes to enter a 15 & Under and 11 & Under team.

ince the last issue of the Yankalilla news, the days are starting to get longer and there is a touch of spring in the air. We are noticing an increase in the number of boats putting to sea, but “touch wood” no increase in the number of call outs. Don’t get me wrong that is the way we like it. We all hope that we have an incident free year, but I suppose on the law of averages that is probably not going to happen. So far this year we have attended to 42 incidents, which is a lot in any ones language. This month we have attended to two tow ins, and that is the way we like it.

It is just over twelve months since the tragic loss of life in Back Stairs Passage of two adventurers trying to paddle across to the Island. Let us all try and make this coming boating season trouble free and safe.

Just following on from last months news where I have been harping on about preseason maintenance, has anyone checked their trailer springs. I have come in contact with a couple of chaps in the last few weeks who have had spring trouble, so I decided to take a good look at mine. On closer examination I could see that I had a problem so decided to take them off and have a thorough look. When I removed the first spring and dropped it on the shed floor it virtually fell to bits, with bits of broken spring leaf popping out everywhere. The second one wasn’t much better. New springs have now been fitted.

Our monthly meetings are held on the third Friday of each month at the Yankalilla fire Station 1930 hours.

Guitarist returns to Yankalilla

wyn Ashton last played his guitar at the Yankalilla Hotel in 1977. On 19th August he returned to ‘The Yank’ for a solo performance before heading to Queensland on a promotional tour for his new album ‘Prohibition.’

Originally from the Christies Beach area, Gwyn has spent the last 10 years in England and will return there after his current tour, where he has been recording with other well known musicians.

46 year old Ashton played a variety of blues music, many from the new

album, but also covering - in his own style - music by Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence and Rolling Stones during the evening.

Performing solo he used two borrowed guitars and added to the show with harmonica, slide guitar and an electronic bass drum using his right foot.

Although numbers were a little less than expected, those who saw the show at ‘The Yank’ were impressed

and well entertained for the evening.

“This will be the start of a new era in regional school bus travel in South Australia - and makes our State among only a few to begin fitting seat belts in school buses,” Dr Lomax-Smith says.

“We will gradually phase in high-standard lapsash seat belts (the same as those in cars) as school buses are replaced, as well as other comprehensive safety and comfort measures.”

The Minister stated they will start the process immediately to order new buses. “The first buses are expected to be ready in time for the new school year and will be allocated to regional bus routes identified by the Education Department as posing the greatest risk of accident, which will be based on the road condition and length of journey.

“Unfortunately, it is not possible to retrofit seat belts to all of the fleet because many buses are not structurally designed for seat belts.” “While this will be an expensive and lengthy exercise, we will still only be the second State in Australia to begin to phase in seat belts on all school buses, along with WA. Considering the turn around time from fazing out the old buses to new seat belt fitted buses, this could eventually mean safer school bus transport for the children of today’s children and in some cases grand children!

n the weekend of 29th & 30th July the Links Lady Bay Golf Club conducted the "The Links Lady Bay Trophy" over 72 holes.

This event was part of the South Australian Golf Assoc "Vardon Trophy" a prestigious competition conducted throughout the year at various senior golf clubs.

45 of the States best golfers contested this event in very tough conditions, which brought "the cream to the top".

Renovated Restaurant to re-open this month

he Yankalilla Council’s Community Services Reference Group has been meeting on a monthly basis now since 2nd May 2006. The focus of the Group has been to work towards developing a Social Plan for the Yankalilla District.

A Social Plan is a document based on information provided by residents about community services. This information is gathered through a survey which will be sent out to residents in the next few months. Through the survey the Community Services Reference Group will be informed about community perceptions as regards: • Safety • Access to education • Use of health and health related services • Involvement in the community • Volunteering • Need for cr isis and emergency services • Information availability • And the needs of older residents, families and young people.

This information: • Will improve our und er stand ing o f the characteristics of the Yankalilla District.

• Help identify gaps between the needs of the community a n d c u r r e n t s er v i c e s provided.

• Will assist Council to utilise it’s resources more effectively.

• Will provide evidence to attract additional funds from State and Federal Governments.

YANKALILLA SHOW ACTION - September 30th 2006 The 124th Annual Yankalilla, Rapid Bay & M yponga Agricultural and Horticultural Show will be held on the Saturday 30th of September, being the long weekend, at the Yankalilla Show Grounds and again is sure to impress all that attend.

Each year a dedicated committee work tirelessly to put on the best possible Show we can for the enjoyment of all. Mr. Dean Brown, now retired politician and State Premier will open this year's show. A number of new events combined with traditional activities will ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy. This year due to the grand final of the AFL we will have a huge 9’ x 8’ screen by the Show bar and wine tasting tent, come and watch the Crows (hopefully) win this years final!

Local band Hard Yacca will be close by to keep you entertained throughout the day.

Yankalilla Writers

ankalilla Writers welcomed Ruth Trigg as our guest speaker on 7th August.

Ruth completed a Writing and Communication Degree and is well known as a University Lecturer and Writer. She has also been an English and Science Teacher and Professional Editor.

When confirming Ruth for the meeting, Coordinator Lil Hawker mentioned that some writers in the group were only beginners and Ruth said, “Even a writer with confidence starts as a beginner. Each new conversation, each new story is a new beginning, so in that way we are all only beginners.”

Ruth talked about ‘Rhythm in Writing’ and how to create it as well as ‘Storytelling’ and how to use observations to enrich them.

Both topics were informative, interesting and well received. Ruth had our pens working too!

We enjoyed the company of six visitors from Goolwa Sandwriters and had two former members attend with a visitor. The feedback on the day stated this was one of the best workshops ever attended.

Our next meeting will be at the RSL Hall on September 4th from 9.30am till noon.

The second session this month is at Pear Tree Hollow B&B on the 18th. On October 18th the workshop will be at Ena Harvey’s

house at Normanville, while the second meeting will see us writing at the peaceful Ingalalla Falls where we also enjoyed shared lunch. Anyone interested is most welcome to join us and we invite you to ring Lil Hawker on 0428 832 175 for details.

Yankalilla Art Group Our July meeting was challenging and took members a little out of their comfort zone with a session on painting Abstracts. Our designated tutor was unavoidably unable to attend so our local artist George Tetlow kindly stepped into the breach at very short notice, for which we thank him. His talk and demonstrations were very informative and enlightening. It was also good to gain information about the thinking behind a different approach to painting and to know why the abstract form of art has evolved in the way it has. It was unfortunate that George was unable to stay with the group for the whole session to give his advice and insight, he missed out on the hilarity which bubbled up whilst individual attempts to create abstract master pieces continued. It was an enjoyable session resulting in some very interesting and colourful paintings. At this point in time I really do not feel that Klee or Picasso have anything to fear from the abstract works of YAG… Ena Harvey Coordinator.

Gallery 88 At the end of August the whole of the gallery will be re-vamped with new paintings and crafts followed by the September Selection Exhibition which will run from September 1st to October 14th. 'The Shed' by Rox Rosey

hether it be shed, garage, lean-to or cubby-hole, I think we have all had some variations of these secret places sometime throughout our life.

Of course, there are those who would vehemently deny that this storage place is anything more than just that.

I would beg to differ as, over the years I have seen many so called ‘sheds’ that have been used for everything else.

‘The shed’ - for mates to get together to test the maturity of the latest batch of home made beer and, listen to the broadcast of the footy game. Taking advantage of the occasion they are handed 20kgs of pickling onions to peel. In this ‘men only’ domain they relax, sample the brew, give their opinion on this latest ‘drop’ and, respond to every kick by kick and goal by goal from the match with rowdy fervour.

Wallowing in discarded ‘dead marines’ and onion skins they eventually emerge from ‘the shed’ flushed, bright eyed, full of bonhomie and clutching a half bucket of onions varying from the original unskinned size to others no larger than marbles, the largest ones being on the bottom- why is this so?

However, there are the sheds that are for accumulation of odds and ends, a veritable collection of everything and anything, never to be disposed of as they may be needed at any time.

Over the years in our household, there have been numerous, vague suggestions regarding the world of garage sales but, that is as far as any definite arrangements have progressed.

In our double garage where there is no room for a vehicle, there are suitcases filled with a collection of articles made for market stalls but, never sold, various unlabelled shoe boxes, contents unknown, cartons of 78’s, 45’s and LP records (they could be worth heaps one day), books and trophies from our family’s various sporting achievements, these have come with us whenever we have moved from rental to rental and, now to our permanent home.

The kids don’t want to be custodians but, we are not to get rid of them.

We have been entrusted with furniture from family members who are either overseas or in another state, (just to mind for them we are told) as well as out of fashion clothing, (it could be trendy again).

One good thing though is that working tools are kept in an orderly, neat row or, in tool chests, with instant location of same, after use returned to their home.

When a minor part has to be replaced in our house, we buy not one, but always two.

This occurs because when hubbie buys a replacement, he buys two, so that he will have one when he has to replace in the future. The trouble with this logic is, he never remembers where he put the extra spare, only that he thinks it is somewhere in the mysterious depths of ‘the shed’.

Eventually we will accumulate enough spares to be the supplier instead of the buyer, if we can find them that is!

When we were in the process of building our home some 10 years ago, there was heaps of room. In fact, we originally intended living temporarily in ‘the shed’ until the house was completed and we could move in.

We were well equipped with camp beds, solar shower, toilet facilities, gas lighting and cooking, kero fridge, however we never did get back to nature and the basics. How I would love to have those days back, not for the comfort but, for the space we had in ‘the shed’.

I have learned over the years to keep my own spares, tools etc in my special ‘room’ in the house, all whereabouts noted, albeit some in shoe boxes as well but all labelled for reference.

Although I am known as a bit of a bower bird, it is mild compared to my inveterate collector who continues to hoard junk and plethora just because he has access and sole rights to ‘the shed’ !

Very reminiscent of that old classic, comedy favourite “Steptoe and Son”.

Sometimes I imagine I can hear the muffled clip, clop of a horse’s hooves. Could that be ‘arold driving his cart?

Yankalilla Council Chambers Redevelopment

ith regard to the proposed additions to the existing council chambers. It seems that a suggestion has been made to relocate and build new premises near the CFS site, which is owned by the council, at much less cost than the $4m already stated by council. The cost to ratepayers of paying off a loan of this amount of money will be a burden for some years to come and the rates for this area are already on a par if not higher than some of the more affluent council areas in the city. Before we rush into this costly scheme, perhaps alternative ideas should be discussed more fully. The present site of council chambers is far from ideal, given the proximity to the adjacent corners and steep descent of the entry road into Yankalilla.

A delay of a few months in the final decisions would allow a more considered discussion between ratepayers and their representative councillors, of which to date there minimal consultation.

’d like to comment on the proposed new redevelopment of the council building. I do not agree with the decision the council has made to borrow $4m to upgrade the old building, which is a most unsuitable site. I was one of the people who could not take the opportunity, due to other commitments, to attend the open day/public forum. I am not in favour of how the council put this new development through the budget, not as a separate item, and giving people very little time to have their say and get an understanding of what’s involved. I was invited to a club in one of the small suburbs of Adelaide and their Mayor spoke on how their council had been in the black and now had to borrow X amount of money to help with the deteriorating footpaths in the area. He was very apologetic and I can tell you the rates were far less than our rates in Yankalilla.

n the August Regional Newsletter under ‘Editors Comment’ it said “It seems most of the residents must be okay with the council proposed $4m for the new council chambers, only one written item this month regarding this subject.”

I can assure you that most residents do not think it’s okay to spend $4m on the proposed new council chambers, with the comments I get each day from the people in the district. I have been asked on occasions to organise a petition to have more time for the public to have their say.

It is very worrying to know that such an important matter was brought about with very little public involvement and very little time and information given explaining the plans properly. One wonders why this proposal was announced in May and approved in June, especially before the coming council elections.

The new proposed Youth and Community Centre has been advertised and had information sent out for over 18 months, which they now have a grant for.

I have been going to write to your newsletter, but I decided to email 2 of the 3 elected council members in my area, plus the CEO before putting my views in your Regional News. I would like you to print the emails I sent and the reply of one of the councillors, and the CEO, the other councillor did not have the courtesy to reply to my email. The District Council of Yankalilla Code of Conduct for Council Members is available at the council office; I recommend the residents get a copy.

Some of my questions to the CEO were not answered sufficiently or not answered at all, I am writing to him again requesting these questions be answered.

I’d like to comment that I have worked in much worse conditions as a volunteer for the community.

In the council June Newsletter there is an article “Establishment of Regional Councils,” one of the comments supplied by Roger Sweetman was; ‘the council is always looking at better ways to provide services to its community and if it was demonstrated that there were social and economic advantages to Council by amalgamation, then council would give serious thought to the consideration.” What about the community having their say?

I wish to relay to you my concerns and disappointment as you are an elected member and representing the rate payers of Yankalilla, voting for the decision not to give extra time for discussion on borrowing $4m to renovate and extend the old council offices. This decision will affect the young and old of this district for many years to come.

Not enough information and time has been given when it was announced in the May Council Newsletter and voted on in June. In my opinion, it has been rushed through with very little consulting with the rate payers and community.

Especially when new councillors will be voted in later in the year and talk by the CEO Roger Sweetman that council could be amalgamating.

Val Gubbin Response….

“The existing building is inadequate for housing the personnel that it needs to accommodate; we have pressures that require staff to meet the needs of this expanding council, both in services and legislative “imposts” coming from the other two levels of government. There is a community expectation that council business is more than rates, roads and rubbish.

Like other councillors, the amenity of the present building is well below what we ourselves would expect in a work or domestic environment (the men's washroom facility alone is disgraceful - no hot water, a single urinal, single washbasin and single cubicle). The storage and work area facilities are too small and there is little private space for senior managers to interview visitors/clients. This leads to the situation where the foyer and counter area frequently has customers present for normal day-to-day business whilst another staff member is dealing with a person (or persons) whose business is confidential or, more disturbingly, has an element of hostility in the conversation.

Until recently we had a transportable at the back of the building to house extra staff, and the move to the Normanville Community Building was deemed necessary firstly to provide a larger, more user-friendly Chambers with room for the gallery of visitors/onlookers/ representors that may attend Council and Committee meetings. The proposals for the news additions allow for a larger Council Chamber and attendant gallery, with the versatility of creating a reasonable size committee room.

Preliminary draft plans have been drawn up and include separate offices for senior management and adequate storage. The initial draft staged the re-development with the Council Chamber being the third and last stage. Whilst we are paying approximately $1800/ month to rent the Normanville facility, the sooner we can eliminate the expense the better as there are disadvantages to having council staff 6kms away from their offices when reference needs to be made to ‘something back at the office’.

I have nothing against borrowing money in the present climate of (relatively) low interest rates and, since financing would be at a fixed rate for the life of the loan I’d rather do the entire job now than in stages and I voted for this proposal. I would argue that staff have a valid expectation to work in conditions that we, as the general public, would expect for ourselves.

Consultation with the community has resulted in general acceptance for the proposal. The plans for the redevelopment have been on show for quite a while. Those who attended the Budget Day were able to view and comment on the plans. Feedback from that day showed little objection. The coverage in Jelf’s Newsletter also resulted in little objection.

As for amalgamation…...new to me!!!

L E T T E R S Email sent to CEO Roger Sweetman Dear Mr Sweetman, You are asking for comments on the plans displayed in the Council Offices Foyer for the extension of the Council Offices.

As a rate payer I wish to object to this council borrowing $4m to build new council chambers and not give the public adequate time for discussion on this very important issues that will affect the rate payers and residents, young and old, for many years to come. For 4 councillors to make the decision not to give extra time for consulting and discussion is appalling and not in the best interest of rate payers of this district, especially when there is talk of council amalgamating.

Why has this decision been rushed through council? This money would be better spent on infrastructure in our townships.

I would like to know if it is true that the final plans are being drawn up at this present time and if outside public toilets are included in this plan, that people can use 7 days a week. Surely if the community wants an extension of the council chambers another site would be available and the current council offices be leased out, bringing in an income to help pay off the loan.

I want to know how much money has been spent on renovating and what is the rent that is paid by council for the council centre at Spilbury’s shop Normanville?

Val Gubbins Response from CEO Sweetman “Council acknowledge that in making its decision to upgrade the current facilities, it will be an expensive capital infrastructure item, however Council is not doing this project at the detriment of other infrastructure projects within the district. Council’s 2006/07 Capital Works Budget total $5,712,177 on projects including roads, footpaths, bridges and the like.

In making its decision to proceed with the upgrade Council acknowledge that: The current facilities have reached the end of their useful life.

The existing building is inadequate to house the current staff and the projected future staffing requirements.

The existing building has inadequate toilet facilities, storage space and meeting space to service the needs of the organisation and the community.

Council and community meetings are currently held off site in rented accommodation that’s costs Council $21,600 annually.

In discussing possible locations Council took into consideration: It did not own any other suitable land within Yankalilla and Normanville therefore would have to purchase suitable land. The land upon which the CFS station is located is not available as it has a long term lease over it with the Dept. of Administration and Information Services for CFS purposes.

The current building had some inherent value within it that could be built upon.

There is no easily identifiable use for the existing building if it were not used for an administration centre.

A move from Yankalilla would be seen to have a negative impact on the town.

Prior to including this project within the 2006/07 budget Council undertook consultation which included: Placing the plans on public display at the shopping centres at Normanville and Yankalilla and the Council offices at Yankalilla.

Included details of the proposal within documentation posted to every ratepayer.

Included details on the proposal in the Council community consultation day held at the end of May. The proposal was given prominence in the Yankalilla and District Regional News.

Council received comments from the community on the proposal and gave this consideration prior to including the proposal within the 2006/07 budget.

Council have expended $6,000 on making additional office space with the current building by using the old chambers, which has been offset by no longer renting the transportable building at the rear of the offices which cost $5,560 annually.

The proposed redevelopment has been estimated to cost $4m however without going through the tender process and obtaining an exact this can only be an estimate.

The preliminary plans do not impact upon the toilets at the rear of the building, and should amended plans have some impact, the Council will consider that issue when it arises.

It is not possible to undertake this project without loan funding as Council does not have the financial ability to fund expenditure of this level from rate revenue. Council will borrow the funds required and repay them over a period of 20 years and the repayment calculated on an estimated $4m would be $349,000 per annum.

Letter sent to Hon. Patrick Conlon MP To the Hon. Patrick Conlon, I am writing to you for assistance in assessing how safe the site is for the $4m Council Chambers re-development from vehicle accidents on Main South Road, at the bottom of Yankalilla Hill, and the effectiveness of the ‘Mounding for Traffic Protection’ to be placed on the road reserve in front of the council chambers, as shown on the council concept plans. Plans are now being drafted for the redevelopment and my concerns are that the mounding is inadequate to protect the building from runaway trucks and potential traffic accidents occurring at the bottom of Yankalilla Hill. When I approached the council staff they said a guard rail will be placed on the mound and that they would probably contact the Main Road Department for design of the guard rail.

My main concern is the increasing number of B Double trucks going to Kangaroo Island with increased loadings, which have been recently approved by State Government.

Mike Smith from KI freight Services has informed me that he can carry up to 62.5 tonnes, and a load came down Yankalilla Hill last week weighing 70 tonnes under permit.

Could you please ‘professionally assess’ whether this proposed mounding and guard rail will be adequate from a runaway truck. Please see enclosed aerial photograph of the roadway and the potential risk area.

There have been a number of recent vehicle accidents, one impacting into the front of the council offices causing substantial damage, and another, a runaway trailer crashed into Dr Gardiner’s old surgery next door and just missed a pedestrian heading to the council office, a few days ago (June 06). Council staff told him that ‘there was always accidents happening out there.” Pedestrian access to the proposed redevelopment is also of concern as the intersection nearby has proven over many years to be very dangerous.

As a qualified carpenter and ratepayer I have drawn plans of an alternative site for the new Council Chambers in Main Street Yankalilla. Next to the CFS shed. I did this as part of the Community Consultation Process announced in the May issue of the Council Newsletter. I also addressed the council on 15th June raising my concerns about the current site of the council offices, and presented my site plan to them. I feel this site is a much better location with good access and parking, and is within the business centre of Yankalilla. At the meeting Mayor Peter Whitford expressed concerns about the current redevelopment and said we should allow more time to properly investigate alternative sites.

I am sending you a copy of the minutes from the 15th June Council Meeting I attended.

A resolution was put forward that: During the next twelve/eighteen months Council purchase suitable land within Yankalilla/Normanville and investigate practical opportunities for the current site.

Although resolutions were not carried, a division was called which shows there is support from some councillors for reassessment of the redevelopment.

Council then resolved to call a special meeting on 22nd June for the purpose of adopting the 2006/07 budget, which was carried. The budget includes the $4m for the redevelopment which if adopted would give the go ahead for the project, without further public consultation.

I will be addressing the next council meeting on 20th July, where I will further raise my concerns and present them with an updated site plan of a larger sized building of 1000m2 in line with a recommendation from a local Building Consultant. Please see enclosed updated site

tudents at Rapid Bay helped celebrate National Tree Day this year by setting up & seeding tube stock with native cypress pines for Land Care with Simon Scott.

The task was enthusiastically carried out by all students….even though it was wet & messy!

Kids in Camelot Audiences were recently delighted

by Rapid Bay’s musical production of Kids in Camelot in the Second Valley Hall on the 23rd and 24th August.

People came from far and wide and

were entertained by singing, dancing & acting - all performed with great gusto!

This year’s performance once again involved every student in the school and was a great showcase of our local junior talent.

Excellent performances were given by all and were the cause of much excitement amongst the children.

Changes to Australia Post’s International Services 4th of September 2006

Rapid Bay – An ecological and environmental disaster.

have been visiting Rapid Bay area from the late 1940’s angling, snorkelling, sport diving and professional diving for abalone over most of the area from Tunkalilla Beach to Carrickalinga so I know this area very well.

During the 1950’s the overburden from the Rapid Bay quarry was dumped over the cliffs west of the jetty and also off the conveyor belt on the jetty into the sea until it touched the jetty planking from no 1 power house to the shore line and then left for the sea to wash it away and then another load would be dumped. After that, the quarry started to dump truck loads of

the overburden onto the beach from near the jetty and the creek around to the cave at the extreme end of the beach, the overburden silt was once again washed out to sea covering an area as far north as Little Gorge and out to sea for about one to two kilometres, affecting the fishing in this previously magnificent fishing area. Up until this dumping commenced the sea, at high tide, was about 2 metres deep across the entrance into the cave at the extreme end of the beach and we could not get into the cave, but we could snorkel right along the edge of the cliffs which was 3 to 4 metres deep along the cliffs as far as Second Valley, this part of the coast has been likened by many to the Mediterranean. Now this area is completely filled with rubble and silt from the overburden with the caves etc filled and rubble so far along that one can walk nearly one third of the way from Rapid Bay to Second Valley and the sea grasses in this area are completely covered up.

In one part of this area between Rapid Bay and Second Valley were spectacular columns and caves that we enjoyed swimming around in, but now we can walk around them because they are filled with rubble and silt. Sea grasses will grow on a sandy bottom in half a metre of water if the waves are less than 300mm. The storm waves and swells can disturb the sand to a depth of up to 25 metres. In the 1950’s, 60’s & 70’s we could see Leafy Sea Dragons, Sea Horses, Yellow Tail, Salmon, Mulloway, Squid, Cuttlefish, Snook, bait fish, Trevally, Leather Jackets, Bream, Barracouta, Harlequin Fish, Blue Throated Parrot fish, Garfish, Tommy Ruff, Mullet, Old Wives, Moonlighters, Boar Fish, Herringcale, Magpie Perch, Wobbegong, Sharks, also Crayfish inhabited the caves from Rapid Head to Little Gorge, now, most of these fish are rarely seen in this area. Huge schools of bait fish such as White Bait, Pilchards, Smelts, Anchovies and Herrings attracted large schools of Salmon, Yellowtail, Tuna, Barracouta and Snook to this area, Garfish and Tommy Ruff are also a food supply to the Pelagic Fish, very few of these fish can be seen or caught now. It will take hundreds of years, if ever, for nature to remedy this damage. As a point of interest I have taken depth measurements with the depth sounder in my boat at the end of the Rapid Bay Jetty, it is

now approximately 10 metre deep at low tide, in the 1950’s it was about 12 to 15 metre deep at low tide. I feel so strongly about this degradation of this magnificent coastline area, which is now so badly damaged, I think the original company or owners of the quarries who allowed, and caused, this ecological and environmental disaster to happen, should be made to clean it up or return it to its previous condition or as an alternative at least repair and make the Rapid Bay Jetty into a safe condition so that people can at least make use of it and enjoy it again as we did.

Bower Road

he owners of house block 482, who are currently using Bower Road as their garden, have no Jervois Road frontage (refer title Volume 4057 Folio 77).

If our council rejects the KEEP IT OPEN proposal, and uses the excuse that the corner is unsafe, then council should fence off the southern end completely and require the owners of lot 482 to enter their property from the safer Northern end. By stating that the corner in question is unsafe, the council is admitting liability, and allowing a foreseeable and preventable accident to occur which leaves them both liable and negligent. The legal consequences could be horrendous.

Bower Road - Open or Closed?

ne would need to be short on intelligence, or long on motive to continue to state a proven untruth, as has been the case recently. Let’s shed some light on the matter again. To make it blatantly clear Bower Road was used in its entirety before the infamous barbed wire fence was erected. So, once again I clearly state that I have statements from people who have used Bower Road in its entirety in the past. One of these people is a member of Yankalilla’s oldest families. Council has been furnished with these facts. It seems to be an important issue to some that one should live in the area for some time before one is permitted to have a say or word of value.

This is of course no further from the truth than the view that if a road (reserve); has not been used as a road; it somehow becomes the property of the person abutting that road (reserve). Of course it does not, not by implied, perceived, or defacto ownership, and will remain the States property until it is SOLD by the State. So, to that lady who phoned me, late on a Sunday night, to tell me that she had miles of unused road running through her property, and who passionately told me that as a consequence she knew the law, all I can say is, thank your lucky stars, that you are not paying rental for those acres of land. Many responsible councils charge rental for that land, thereby reducing the financial burden on regular ratepayers. Of course those road reserves have been put aside by the State Government, who in its’ wisdom foresaw that progress would cause demands in the future. The resulting compulsory acquisition of these lands would not cause huge expenses, and cause hardship.

We the KEEP IT OPEN signatories are pleased that the council has erected a rather small NO THROUGH sign at the southern end of Bower Road, thus indicating and confirming to all that it is a ROAD, NOT THIS PERSONS GARDEN. We would prefer the road to be completely fenced off at that point, and a much larger sign, pending its eventual opening. If safety is an issue, (we don’t believe it is), then NO ONE should use the Bower Road /Jervois Road intersection until it is made safe for all. If it is not unsafe, then there is no impediment to the opening of the road.

he access onto Jervois Road from the unmade section of Bower Road by the vehicles from one property is not the issue being considered by Council.

Council would be negligent if it opened Bower Road to through traffic without properly designing and constructing the Bower Road /Jervois Road intersection and by opening this road encouraged the use of this road by many vehicles, some of which would not be aware of local traffic conditions.

Well Kindy has come back from 2 weeks holiday which were probably spent inside for most of the time due to the cold weather and children being sick with one thing or another. Day Care children numbers were down slightly over the holidays but there were still

enough children to keep everyone busy. The new outdoor area at the back of the centre is complete and looks fantastic. We have green rubber outdoor flooring with a huge yellow snake through the middle for the play equipment as it is thicker rubber, enough to withstand the odd stumble with a soft landing.

There is also a black bike track that the under 2’s can ride around on the new wiggles cars. A new shed has been placed in the corner of the yard and the old shed has been utilised to make an outdoor shelter so the children can play outside in any weather. The sandpit is still there, which is always a big hit and soon there will be a small trampoline with a handle. We have a few exciting activities coming up this term including Kathy Pike who is a children’s entertainer encouraging exercise, outdoor activity and healthy eating. In week 3 is ‘T’ week and the children will be invited to dress up in something starting with ‘T’, we will have tiger toast and trifle! Also in week 9 we

pam is a new use for an old name. It was once best known as a brand of canned ham, but now it is more likely to relate to those annoying emails which blitz your inbox. Formally, it applies to unsolicited emails. Usually they are the mass emailed version of cold call telemarketing and almost invariably are for some spurious cure, drug, get rich quick scheme or pornography.

Some interesting data from the USA. 86% of emails published on websites are harvested and receive unsolicited emails. 63% of “Remove Me” replies are not honoured and serve to tag your address. 66% of spam emails have false “from” addresses.

Why do they do it ? Surely no-one believes this rubbish. Well, it is all a numbers game. If they send out millions of emails, enough will respond to make it worthwhile. It is a rort on a global scale.

Just about all of us suffer spam as victims. Your risks in responding vary from wasting your time, lightening your wallet, seriously affecting your finances or contracting a computer virus, worm or similar. The first rule is to learn to recognise the typical false sender and subject lines used, then not to open them, never reply and always delete them. To reduce these pests arriving, use spam filtering software either on your computer or via your internet service provider. When you put your email address on a website, put it in a graphic which cannot be seen by the spammers search software. Once again …. never reply and always delete

To avoid your genuine emails being accidentally deleted by a careful recipient, always clearly identify yourself as the sender and include a relevant subject line. Never use repeated !!!!!! marks, expressions or letters and avoid risky words such as “Winner”, et al.

Care should be taken if you are sending out emails which might be considered spam. The Spam Act 2003 attempts to control mail which emanates from Australia and business operators can inadvertently be law breakers as well as victims. It is illegal to send or cause to be sent emails that are “unsolicited commercial messages”. If you do email marketing, it can be very easy to get it wrong. As a guide, unless you have specific or implied permission to send an email to someone, you may be the law-breaker. An example of “implied” permission”, would be someone giving you their contact details, such as on a business card.

Author Night

n Thursday 27th July the Yankalilla Community library was pleased to host an author night in conjunction with The Advertisers Little Big Book Club.

The evening featured Australian authors Tegan Bennett Daylight and Kate Grenville.

Organisers were delighted at a turn up of over 90 people who enjoyed a two course meal, drinks, tea and coffee plus enlightening speeches by the two authors at the Normanville Hotel’s Bevely Room.

Tegan Bennett Daylight spoke first.

Her speech was both entertaining and interesting as she talked about her writing style, the use of dialogue and her book Safety. A story which explores relationships and follows her main characters, Elizabeth and Ross, as they deal with the complexities and dramas of love and life.

Tegan Bennett Daylight was named one of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Best Young Novelist in 2002. Safety is her third novel.

Guests were then introduced to Kate Grenville, author of many titles, including her latest, The Secret River. This book is the winner of the 2005 Orange Prize for

fiction, was awarded the 2006 Commonwealth Writers Prize and was nominated for the 2006 Miles Franklin Award. The Secret River stems from the authors own journey into her family history and is the story of the early days of convicts, a cross of cultures, ownership, conflict and settlement in Australia.

Ms. Grenville’s speech provided an insight into her book, her ideas and her method of writing. After a delicious desert, the floor was opened up for question time to both authors. This provided the audience with the opportunity to discover more about their lives, humour and writing styles.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by those attending and with such success similar events in the future are probable. Library staff would like to thank all who contributed behind the scenes in preparing and promoting the event and to all who attended, making it a wonderful evening. ANIMAL MATTERS ROUNDWORM INFESTATION

R

oundworms (ascarids) are round in cross section, like earth worms. They are up to 712cm long and live in the dog or cat's gut, consuming partially digested food. They move freely in the contents of the small intestine. They pass moderate numbers of microscopic eggs in the animal's faeces, which can be detected by microscopic examination. Bitches and queens that have had roundworms in the past can transmit them to their young before birth. This occurs even if the mother is not passing roundworm eggs in the faeces, because roundworm larvae (immature worms) encyst in her muscle tissue and are not detected by tests for adult worms. These encysted larvae are mobilised by changes in the hormonal status as a result of pregnancy and migrate across the placenta into the foetal tissues. They mature in the bowel of the foetus. Another major source of roundworm infection for puppies and kittens is larvae in the 'mother's milk.

C o c kro a c h e s , e a rt h w o r ms , chickens, and rodents have been found to harbour intermediate, immature stages of roundworms and represent potential sources of infection for dogs and cats.

Young and adult dogs and cats ma y become infected b y swallowing roundworm eggs, which contain infective larvae.

The larvae hatch out in the animal's stomach and small intestine and migrate through the muscle, liver, and lungs. After several weeks, the larvae make their way back to the intestine to mature. When these worms begin to reproduce, new eggs will pass in the faeces, and the life cycle of the parasite is completed. Large numbers of worms can cause weight loss and a pot-bellied appearance in puppies and kittens and w e a knes s in adu l ts.

Decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea will be observed on occasion. Puppies can die if their gut becomes obstructed by masses of roundworms.

Roundworms are diagnosed by a microscopic examination of the animal's faeces. Only moderate numbers of eggs are passed, so

examination of more than one faeces sample may be necessary to find them. Occasionally, mature worms can be found in the animal's faeces or vomit. There are effective treatments for roundworms. The treated worms may then be seen in the faeces. At least two or three treatments are needed at 2-4 week intervals.

None of these treatments will kill the immature forms of the worm or the migrating larvae. The eggs are highly resistant to most commonly used disinfectants and even to harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, removal of the animal's faeces is the most effective means of preventing reinfestation. A 1% solution of household bleach can be used to remove the sticky outer coating of the eggs, making it easier to rinse them away. This does not, however, kill the eggs. Take care with using bleach safely. The roundworms of dogs and cats pose a health risk for humans.

Children in particular are at risk should they become infected. A variety of organs may be affected as the larvae migrate through the body, but the main danger is that the larvae from roundworms of dogs can migrate to the eye where they can cause blindness. In suitable environments, the eggs may remain infective for years.

Steps can be taken for prevention: pregnant bitches and queens should be dewormed in late pregnancy (when the encysted larva will be migrating into the bowel, both of the mother and the unborn offspring). This will help to reduce potential contamination of the environment for newborn puppies and kittens. Puppies and kittens should be treated by 2-4 weeks of age and then on the schedule recommended by your veterinary surgeon. Prompt deworming should be given when any parasites are detected, and periodic deworming should be maintained as dogs and cats are susceptible to reinfestation with roundworms throughout their lives. Rodent control is desirable since rodents may serve as a source of roundworm InfectionPrompt disposal of all faeces is important, especially in gardens, playgrounds, and public parksDogs and cats should be discouraged from toileting in areas normally used by children.

Strict hygiene is especially important for children. Do not allow children to play in potentially contaminated environments. Ensure they wash their hands after playing with animals.

Centralised Mulesing Accreditation through National Mulesing Assurance Program

ustralian wool growers and contractors now have an independent, centralised source of information for mulesing accreditation with the launch of the National Mulesing Assurance Program (NMAP). The program will be managed and implemented by a 6 person committee, with representatives from industry and growers.

Robert Pietsch, Chairman of the NMAP committee and member of the Australian Sheep and Wool Industry Taskforce is pleased that there is one point of contact for mulesing accreditation and training enquiries, and is urging contractors and growers to participate in the program.

“It’s important that growers ensure their contractor is accredited through the NMAP by the end of 2006, and that if they mules their own sheep that they also take steps to become accredited by 2008.

"Retailers in Australia and the Northern Hemisphere can be assured that the Australian industry is producing the best wool in the world in a sustainable and socially responsible manner, and the training and accreditation offered through the NMAP guarantees this,” he said.

NMAP secretariat, Charlie de Fegely emphasises that the accreditation process

will be as streamlined and simple as possible.

“We already have training and accreditation being offered by Kondinin Group Industry Training, with courses planned nationally through to December 2006. Growers and contractors can simply contact the NMAP on 1800 221 076 to find details of upcoming training and accreditation for their area.”

“We also encourage owner mulesers to start the process now and call the hotline, register and get the free NMAP manual – there’s no charge for getting started,” he said.

The national mulesing guidelines and training and accreditation program was developed in conjunction with the Livestock Contractors Association (LCA) and is the national standard for best practice.

Some 165 contractors and growers (owner operators) have already completed training and achieved NMAP accreditation through the Kondinin /LCA National Accreditation days. NMAP secretariat Charlie de Fegely said there was good feedback from all participants.

Community Tree Planting Day a success!

ocation: Starfish Hill Wind Farm Cape Jervis Date of event: Sunday 23rd July 2006 Trees in the ground: 1,500 Volunteer attendance: Over 45 volunteers The Starfish Hill Wind Farm hosted a picture perfect day for Tree Planting on Sunday 23rd July. Over 45 volunteers attended the community day including members of Land Rovers Association of SA, Cape Jervis Landcare Group, Rotary Club of SA, Tarong Energy staff, local residents and Greening Australia volunteers.

The days activities were a huge success with a friendly atmosphere which was made possible by the amount of families and children who made it to the event (including the family pets, two kelpies!)

The aim of the days activities was to plant over 1000 native seedlings. This aim was furthered with a huge 1,500 trees in the ground in record time. This equates to over 8 trees planted per minute!

“The day was a successful partnership between community volunteers, Tarong Energy and Greening Australia. Which highlights if we all work together a great deal can be achieved for the environment.”

Says Kate Esser, Greening Australia’s Conservation Project Leader.

The seedlings will be supported by watering and further revegetation works to be undertaken by Urbrrae Agricultural students later this week.

ello readers, We are now in our 10th year, as a support group, and a lot of things have happened over those years BUT there is still confusion when it comes to the White tailed Spider. and the damage it is doing.

Because ONE man said there is not a problem, most Doctors are not aware of what is happening and still people are suffering unnecessarily.

I have victims contacting me in desperation because their GP has said the white tail is a myth, and when it gets worse, they start searching the web for help, which is where they find my web page www.spidersbite.net/ Spring is almost here again, there is beautiful blossoms out already, and it is such a shame the August/September winds are going to ruin it and disturb the leaf litter sending Spiders and bugs running indoors. We have already had spiders coming inside, to get away from the destruction of their habitat.

Please be aware this is happening and protect yourselves.

In July we received some really sad news, one of our 1208 victims had his right leg amputated below the knee due to the necrotising of his foot from a white tailed spider bite to his second toe.

The Spider was in his slipper, which had been left on the floor over night.

His wife killed the spider, and identified it, and desperately tried to treat the wound but because of the lack of knowledge by the GPs in question she found no one would believe her. This is happening a lot, as I and many others have found , and leaves the victim in a very sad situation.

I have presented 12,000 signatures to the Parliament, over 10 years and still there is no antivenom I will never stop fighting for this cause.

I keep in touch with the Professors and Scientists, in order to keep up to date with what is happening in the research if any of an antivenom, for this bite, but the funding was cut and these people can’t do work with out the funding to help them.

The University of Melbourne Venom research unit also had their funding cut, and not much work is happening on Australian Spiders, BUT one thing they did tell me is that the White tail from the East Coast of Australia, known as cylindrata murina, has now been identified as the same as the White tail all over Australia.

On my register, are 8 people, having to have amputations and there has been 6 deaths, following organ failure all due to the ongoing effects on the body from the initial bite.

This bite is known as “The Anniversary Bite” because it re-occurs every twelve months and usually on the opposite side of the body, similar to that of the Taipan Snake.

Most of my scientist and research colleagues cannot explain this phenomenon, but it is happening and it took one of my homeopathic doctors to explain WHY. It has a lot to do with the energy fields of the body, that keeps this re-occurring but help is at hand in the way of drops which are said to correct the damage .

The Happiest place on earth.

ecently 179 countries were surveyed to find the happiest place on earth.

One would think that Australia, with its open space and vast coastlines and natural beauty and resource, should be a close runner. But, according to the ‘Happy Planet Index’ compiled by the British New Economics Foundation Australia ranked 139th out of the 179 countries surveyed. Zimbabwe was bottom of the rankings.

(Advertiser 13-6-06) According to the research which studied people’s well being and their impact on the environment the tiny South Pacific Ocean archipelago of Vanuatu rated number one on the list, followed

by Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominica and Panama.

Why are the people of Vanuatu the happiest? The report said: ‘People are generally happy here because they are very satisfied with very little. This is not a consumer-driven society. Life here is about community and family and goodwill …It’s a place where you don’t worry too much. The only things we fear are cyclones or earthquakes.’

Not where you are.

But, you don’t have to live in Vanuatu to be among the happiest people on earth. We can learn to be content with what we have and be friendly

and helpful where ever we are.

Ways to be happy There are ways to be happy. Try the following: Gratitude. Grateful people are happy people. Despite the fact that life can be tough we have a lot to be thankful for.

Can you see, hear and remember? Thank God for every faculty. The miraculo us privilege of eyesight, hearing and memory is worth millions.

Appreciate Australia. Even though ranking 139th in the happy planet index. This is a great country. And, what a priceless part of Aussie land is the Fleurieu Peninsula!

Get into the habit of gratitude and you will be happier for it.

The drive to Generosity acquire often lets us down. You can have all the gear in the world and be as miserable as a bandicoot. Jesus was so right when he said: 'It’s more blessed to give than to receive.’

Where do we find a reason for living? You need to look in the right place. The Bible says that our true purpose is to seek after God and happily find him. It also says that God isn’t far from any one of us. See Acts 17:27 A pastor once told about the happiest person that he’d ever met. He had no legs or arms but radiated a rare sense of joy.

When asked about what made him so very happy, the man said, ‘It was through losing my limbs that made me think about the deep issues of life. I have found Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Jesus means more to me than arms and legs.’

The happiest place. Happiness is connected to hope – the hope for something better. The Bible says, ‘If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.’ 1 Cor 15:19 One of my favourite Bible verses is Jude 24, ‘Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy…’

Incredible joy awaits the Christian when welcomed into the very presence of God. The Bible says, ‘Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.’ Col 3:2 Heaven is the happiest place!

thousand’s of galaxies in each bundle in a stream of galaxies, one can imagine that some of these bundles of galaxies collected tightly to themselves, increasing their density and heat and reaching ignition that makes a “bang”; and multiplied by thousand’s or millions, may be the rolling thunder audible today, as “echoes of the big bang”.

We must also postulate that another older universe existed long before ours was born 16 billion years ago.

Adding credence to the supposition that such a universe did exist lies in our skies today. Up there, astronomers identified stars, or galaxies, “much older” than our own universe. These bodies therefore existed much before the creation of our own universe. These vastly older celestial bodies, now in our skies, quite likely were beyond the reach of the general gravitational pull of their universe; or just tardy, to heed the gravitational pull back to their own melt-down and recycling in the “big death pinwheel” - but instead were blown outward again.

To live as relics for another eternity in their foster universe.

Well, that’s our idea of how to connect up:Why our universe is flat.

That there must have been an early “parentuniverse” to ours.

That the “big bang” was simultaneously the “big death bang” (old universe), and the “big birth pinwheel” of our universe.

How it comes about that there are celestial bodies in our skies much older than our universe.

Bible Prophecy Expounded – know your Bible. “prophecy came not … by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the holy spirit” 2 Peter 1:21

ear reader, again the Middle East as a world trouble spot has flared into savage armed conflict. Will the UN brokered cease fire hold? How many times can the flames of war engulf the region before such will spiral out of control into the dreadful conflict known in the bible as Armageddon? The vortex of Armageddon is over the land known as Israel; the crescendo and finale being waged in a valley to the north of Jerusalem known as the valley of Jehoshaphat.

In the book of Revelation given by Jesus Christ, he remarks, that nations will be gathered into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. This presents us with a few clues as to where and when this battle would be fought. He specifically states that its meaning is to be sought for in the Hebrew tongue.

The ancient Jewish language of Hebrew had become a dead language after the Jews had been driven out of Palestine by the Romans in AD 70. To survive they needed to adopt the language of the country into which they fled. It has only been revived in the past 100 years at the determined instigation of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, a Jew who passionately believed that his people when returning to Palestine needed to communicate in their ancient tongue. So the significance of the Lord’s expression “called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon” waited 1900 years for a significant relevance. Also the New Testament is but a commentary on the Old and therefore we seek the meaning of the Hebrew word in the Old Testament and in so doing we are led back into the Prophet Joel’s writings. Here he graphically depicts a troubled time for the coasts of Palestine prior to Armageddon. He firstly tells us in what era of Jewish destiny we should expect the battle to occur. He writes in Verse 1’ “For behold in those days and at that time when I should bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem” we pause Joel in mid sentence to get a time fix. Its at a time when God would “bring again” those who went into “captivity” and return them to control the ancient territory of “Judah” (UNO voted for the re-establishment of the State of Israel in 1948) and “Jerusalem” (Jewish control of their ancient city was regained during the 6 Day War of 1967). Joel continues: “I will also gather all nations and bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations and parted my land”.

Reader, give serious consideration to these words of warning by God. He calls the people of Israel “my heritage” and the land that the UN “parted” or partitioned “my land”. What’s more He has a controversy with the nations and will bring them into

a valley called Jehoshaphat on the northern outskirts of Jerusalem to plead or pronounce sentence upon them. Skipping over several verses brings us to the battle of Armageddon. In the Hebrew tongue it means “A heap of sheaves in a valley for threshing or judgement” and this is what Joel 3:12-14 speaks of.

“Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the nations round about. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe …. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision (threshing): for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. (threshing)” Here are the worlds nations depicted as sheaf or stook of grain for threshing. So here is the portrayal of Armageddon and the divine intervention follows in verse 16: “The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.” Prior to this final development of world war in the Middle East are some interesting verses that I said we would skip for the moment. Here they are and see if you can identify the territory spoken of from what you have heard and seen in the world news in the past 6 weeks. “ Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompense? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompense upon your own head;” Yes, our news has been besieged day after day with references to the coasts of Palestine, from Gaza in the south and Tyre and Zidon in Lebanon to the north and the Israeli offensive against these places to quell the rocket attacks emerging there from. What Joel the prophet is telling us, is that these events we are witnessing are a but a stepping stone toward Armageddon. As terrible as its full depiction is, there is a far, far better world to emerge in its aftermath.

MOSAIC WORKSHOP Have you always fancied trying your hand at mosaic?

Southern Zone Ode Monarto, June 24th &25th, 2006.

Eight of our members traveled to Monarto to compete in this major Pony Club event. Here is how they went.

July Rally The July rally was a half-day of r i d i n g f o l l o w ed b y t r o p h y presentations and our AGM. Glenys Hayman came along as guest instructor. Thank you Glenys. There were four groups doing a variety of novelties - flag racing; musical mats; Everyone seemed to be having a great time, as there were plenty of grins about the place. Novelties a fun way to instill the basic riding skills. There was also some final testing so that badges could be presented along with trophies.

August Rally We had just the loveliest day for our August Rally. Glenys Hayman came and instructed again. Thank you Glenys. There were four groups of flat work in the morning with jumping in the afternoon. Libby had

put up some makeshift crosscountry jumps, which added some variety to the day. There were a few spills but everyone jumped right back on and continued to enjoy themselves.

Also Nicole Kay gave birth to beautiful Jessica Kay Young on the 19th of July. Congratulations to Nic, Wayne and Levi.

Ryan Fletcher has been away competing again in Mildura, coming 2nd. He has also been throwing in some training with the state squad.
