Local Artists now showcased at Inman Valley Markets

F

ollowing on from the success of the recent Inman Valley Presents arts and craft exhibition during Festival Fleurieu, the Inman Valley Community and Memorial Hall Association (IVC&MHA) in collaboration with the Inman Valley Presents organising committee, have taken the opportunity to present local artists on a more regular basis with an Artists’ table at the monthly Inman Valley markets. A number of creative disciplines will be on display, including painting, photography, pottery, jewellery, felting, woodworking and sculpture, with many of the items available to purchase.

The (IVC&MHA) has recently taken over the management of the market and is looking at ways to support current stall holders and grow attendance.

The Inman Valley market has been running continuously since the late 1980’s,

which makes it one of the oldest in the district. It has been an important part of community life for nearly 30 years and the association is keen to make sure that the market continues to support the community well into the future.

Inman Valley market committee is confident that the Artists’ table will add another dimension to what’s currently on offer as well as help broaden the appeal to visitors. It will also be a great way for the association to support local artists on an ongoing basis.

Other items on offer include homemade fare such as quiches, cakes, pies, chocolates, spice mixes and teas, children’s clothing, jams, chutneys, books, magazines, plants and more. And for those who feel a bit peckish during the morning, there’s freshly cooked bacon and egg sandwiches or sausage sizzle to keep you going. Or if you would like

something a bit sweet there are homemade scones, jam and cream plus coffee or tea served by the Inman Valley Red Cross volunteers.

So there is plenty on offer at Inman

Valley market. The market runs from 9am to 1pm on the first Saturday of each month. Why not take a drive and see what the valley has to offer.

The shows combine choreography, stunt riding and showmanship together, to bring to the public an incredible show of amazing freestyle trials riding from a very talented professional rider.

We also have Don’s Demo Dogs, dogs on skateboards, playing basketball & quoits see the obedience work of these highly trained dogs.

Animal Capers is a totally wild experience where you get to handle awesome animals, find out more about our natural world in the Normanville Natural Resource Centre marquee.

for young riders, we also have Spanish Horses performing.

See the Wobbles the clown. Clancy the Jelly Bean Train will be returning again this year to get you around the grounds (with a free bag of jellybeans) on this cute 20 seat train. We have live music on various stages throughout the day. And the Aldinga & Sellicks Spinners and knitters will be doing shorn to worn fleece demo’s near the Main Hall.

The official opening will be on the Main stage at 12 noon by Fleurieu Horticulturist and TV presenter Kim Syrus.

There will be camel & pony rides, animal nursery, amusements, market stalls, main hall showcasing the competitive exhibits, art pavilion, photography now housed in our new shed, show bags, show bar and plenty of food and lots more!

Gates open at 9am for the public cost is $10 adult, $5 children between 5 and 15, children under 5

Next month is the Yankalilla Show on the October long weekend. Have you got your entries organised? Our little show keeps getting better every year.

Then November brings the famous Yankalilla Cruise to town for three days of fun and entertainment. Live bands, hot cars, side shows, stuff to buy and more!

Christmas is not that far away when you think about it. So... I won’t think about it... not at all... for now anyway.

Yankalilla Bowling Club receives cheque from ANZ

B

owls SA and ANZ have a mortgage introducer agreement. If someone involved with a particular Bowling Club (including family members), purchases a new home and ANZ provides the mortgage or refinances their existing home mortgage to ANZ and states their affiliation with that bowling club to the ANZ lender at the loan interview and signs a referral form, ANZ will pay a commission (spotters fee) to Bowls SA who in turn will forward the funds to the appropriate Club. Any Club can benefit from this.

Last month Yankalilla ANZ Branch Manager, Lawton Davidson, was proud to present a Cheque for $1255.58 to the Yankalilla Bowling Club’s President, Greg Hawkins.

It's a great way ANZ can give back to the community and many Clubs over SA have taken part so far.

his is a chance for those with some computer skills to learn ways to create beautiful books.

What happens to your family photos and holiday snaps? Don’t let them languish in a drawer but make them into slim volumes, big books, or calendars, desk diaries and delight your family and friends with a unique gift.

The first session will be held on a Saturday later in October at the Yankalilla Community Centre.

After the meeting, people have a chance to go home and try out their techniques, and can book a followup appointment for more assistance the next day and the following Saturday. She announced a new initiative of a “drop in centre” to be open daily for the use by all members and a new activity of a monthly guest

The AGM approved funding for the construction of a shed that would be leased to the Men’s Shed Group.

he Yankalilla mah-jong group celebrated their second birthday on the 10 August, 2015 with a shared lunch at the Over 50’s Club.

Members of the mah-jong group believe the key to living longer is to keep busy and active and participate in mind-stimulating activities like the Chinese game of mah-jong!

The Western version of mah-jong is played weekly on Mondays from 2 to 4pm at the Over 50’s Club. A social and fun afternoon to keep the brain ticking!

New air-conditioning for Over 50’s

We now have reverse-cycle air-conditioning at the Centre. The old evaporative system was replaced and the heaters were removed and a brand new reverse cycle system was installed by Andrew, Dan and Steve of “Below Zero” Air-conditioning. No more hot spots sitting under the heaters!

Although the Over 50’s was a hive of

activity there was minimal disruption to the Club’s activities.

President Lorraine Downes said “We have installed the new airconditioning which now includes the kitchen. This is part of the ongoing upgrade along with the new blinds and installation of a bar to continually improve facilities for our members.”

The Sabre Saga!

read the letter in last month’s edition and also the letters in the July edition and I too have had an incident with this dog named “Jep”. A close

friend of mine has a holiday house in the estate of Carrickalinga Rise and when she comes to stay, I visit with her and take my Jack Russell Terrier with me. The three of us go for a walk around the estate, through the walkway and back along Davey Road. Last year I’d organised to catch up with my friend, but when I arrived at her place, she wasn’t home. I rang her and she said she was about 15 minutes away, so instead of sitting in the car, I decided to take my dog for a walk. I was nearing the walkway on Stacey Drive, when a big grey dog came charging through the walkway heading straight for us. My little dog was so terrified she wet herself, to be honest I almost did the same. All I could do was pick my dog up and scream at the other dog to go away. It kept leaping up at me and then I heard a woman’s voice in the distance yelling out ‘Jep, Jep’. That’s how I know that it’s the same dog that has caused the lady who owns Sabre so much trouble. We no longer walk any where neat that walkway and choose to walk to the beach instead. The local council should do something about this dog owner- she is a menace and a danger to our community!

Yacht Trouble

bout mid-August, I was delivering a 50' yacht "Steel Sapphire" from Fremantle to Sydney for her new owners and, to hide from the weather, and resolve some engine issues we headed in to Wirrina Cove, St Vincent's Marina.

We have had the best hospitality from locals, we were greeted and assisted in berthing by Aaron, the marina manager, we dined in the restaurant and as we departed to walk back to the boat one of the staff drove us back to the boat as it was starting to rain.

I was going to travel to Adelaide on the Sealink bus to collect a hire car but read the summer instead of winter timetable and missed the bus, I put my hand out and the first car stopped and the lovely lady drove me to Yankalilla, I had a coffee and sausage roll. headed back to the road and the third car that was passing picked me up, Gary who owns the Pizza/Kebab/Fish and Chip Shop pulled over and drove me to Adelaide where I picked up the hire car. We visited Gary’s shop and bought dinner this evening and to thank Gary again for his good samaritan actions.

The following days we were still in Wirrina as we had a few more engine issues, a local mechanic Paul Webb has continued the good samaritanship by going out of his way and working really long ours and even during the night to resolve our issues and get us on our way. He very kindly offered and then drove our crew up to the resort for dinner one night as well.

I would love to thank the people of the region for their hospitality, lovely place and great people. I will always try to stop again on any future deliveries, weather permitting of course. Goodonya Yankalilla.

I think I (and most of the Yank News readers) have understood that B Reel can't abide Christians or Christianity, we get the message mate! My understanding is that School Chaplains are not allowed to talk about or preach the Gospel to the children.

We rely on gas for heating & cooking. Also our cat Daisy insists that her milk is served warm. We faced the prospect of a weekend of cold showers, cold porridge and an unhappy cat.

Tearfully I rang Tom at Thrifty Link and explained our predicament. Without hesitation and even though it was his birthday he delivered a cylinder in a matter of minutes on his way home and saved the day.

L e t t e r s Thoughts in Reply to: – Re Funeral Parlour Concerns

I

n conversations and correspondence I have encountered to date regards the block of land between the Yankalilla Hotel and Browse and Save being used for a district funeral parlour – I have noticed that NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON has made belittling or sarcastic comments toward the funeral directors themselves in any way, shape or form. The issue is the location!

I do note their letter in the July 2015 issue of the Yankalilla Regional News and I believe most of their comments were so unrelated to the issue that they do not warrant a response.

However as people have justifiably, as is their right, expressed concern about the lack of public consideration surrounding a decision that our currently elected Council members made to support the location for a funeral parlour, without any form of consultation with its constituents, when that location obvious has major ramifications on the whole of this community: drivers, shoppers, home owners, pedestrians, surrounding business and not just adjoining businesses.

This has prompted one letter writer to remind us (yet again!) about the failure of councils’ promise to be an open and transparent council at the November elections.

Like the funeral directors, the ‘lunch ladies’ have as much right to their opinions as everyone else on this issue and I’m sure they will find ways around where they socialize on the days when they know a funeral is to be held. People understand that funerals are a fact of life, respect this and don’t need to be told this. For the majority of people funerals are a sad occasion.

I believe the main concerns for most of us is the fact that the main shopping precinct of Yankalilla in which the parlour is to be positioned already has major parking issues. The shopping precinct also fronts onto a very busy three way-main road junction leading to Victor Harbor, Normanville and Myponga that already creates problematic traffic congestion. Add to this, events such as football, the classic cars or any other event/s where police have to control traffic flow and combine them with a slow moving funeral leaving from a position very close to the proximity of these events… not a good combination! It seems to me that very little thought has gone into any of this!!!!

A funeral is a very serious, respectful and sacred matter to those people involved and not something to be regarded flippantly! So - I don’t find it funny when I read comments implying that a “prep room” might even be used as a spare room when the in-law’s come to visit!!” It just made me glad I’m not one of the in-laws and question if it is intended to be a business in a commercial zoned property with a Prep Room or not?????

I personally don’t regard the block as a Waste Block of Land. I think it is PRIME REAL ESTATE IN A PRIME LOCATION! “So let’s talk numbers”: – Taking into consideration the letter in the July 2015, Yankalilla Regional News which stated three (3) funerals a week was mentioned simply for the purpose of giving an example. This letter then stated, and I quote: “if we were to be doing these sorts of numbers it would only be because Jack the Ripper, or Ebola had come to town. In all honesty

we would be surprised if we did twenty funerals a year”. There is an enormous discrepancy between 20 and 156 - PEOPLE - that is being discussed here! Wouldn’t the onus be on the funeral directors to provide reasonably accurate figures for something that is as important as this? It wouldn’t be that hard to present (in a formal document) Figures that truly and realistically reflect credible expectations. I should think any business plan would demand more realistic figures. Why provide a number of three funerals per week if twenty per year is realistically what you expect to perform?????????

Surely the directors would have done their research into this - so my questions now are: 1. “how can such a totally wrong figure be given to Council and be considered acceptable”? and 2. Is Council also responsible for verifying the information in the application documents? Surely this could have been as simple as both the funeral director and Council contacting the Bureau of Statistics; Births Deaths and Marriages or even a nearby funeral director (one in Victor Harbor for example). I’m sure any of these options would have provided past, current and probable projected figures for our district based on past history.

Prior to giving any form approval on this issue, I believe (as do other constituents obviously) that because this subject affects every single one of us in one way or another, Council should have shown its' constituents the due courtesy of providing an opportunity for public comments to be seriously assessed.

In fact my personal belief is that, especially now that your constituents have clearly shown they want to have their opinions heard regarding this decision and in view of the enormous error in the figures explained by the parlour directors in the July 2015, Yankalilla Regional News, having come to light, Council should rescind approval until the error is corrected and presented in a new application form and because the people of this district clearly want it, allowing them to be given the opportunity to vote on this matter before giving any form of approval.

When people told me their concerns regarding car parking spaces perhaps being taken up by people attending (especially large) funerals, at times when they want to go to lunch, shopping, the hotel, or whatever - my first port of call was Council. I was informed at that time, the actual blocks of land that the owners purchased, on which their business’s stand, are what the owners of the business actually own. Logically this tells me that the funeral directors actually own the little “block of waste land” as they described it, between the hotel and Browse and Save, and only that.

I was also told that Council owns the land around these properties and saw the need for a decent car park as the land around the hotel and Browse and Save got so “pot holed” and boggy in bad weather.

car park, we can park in any part of this car park, at any time (day or night) when we go shopping, to the hotel for a drink or meal, or go to a café for lunch, or do whatever. So I guess we could say the district rate payers paid for the car park because our “then” rates paid for it.

Contact Council and check for yourselves and Let them know what you think about all of this! I’m sure they won’t mind – after all - their wages come out of our rates as well and we’ve proven that none of us have short memories at election time.

PS…Just an after-thought!

As our Council Chambers car park is within a very short walking distance from the “parlour” site, then perhaps Council will consider leaving their cars home when a funeral is advertised and let funeral goers and other members of the public use their car parking spaces so they can share and alleviate some of problems we are expected to endure!

Mandy Pacilli, who is the area Coordinator for the organisation ‘COWS CREATE CAREERS’.

Mandy works closely with Yankalilla School Farming Project and with Keith Lavers the Schools farming organiser and teacher.

schools farm. During the slide show each student explained what each did to help rear healthy cattle; feeding habits, creating the right feeding facility, providing the right grain, studying grass quality and even working on experiments’ on milk in the schools laboratory.

Statistics’ were kept on all activities involved, shown on the display and explained and why they were kept by each student. The animals are looked after for three months before being returned to a working farm. Mandy’s principle interest and driving force is to encourage as many youngsters to return to the dairy industry and agriculture in general and in this field, pardon the pun, she has been most successful. ‘Cows Create Careers’ Project must offer a wide opportunity for our local students to think and learn outside the square.

The purpose of the festival is to share the pleasure we experience in the book as an object that has been made in various shapes and forms through history, and as something that we can still put our hands on.

The festival will run with small groups of six people at a time, over four sessions, two hours each session. with a total cost of $10 per person. The sessions will cover paper making, printing, old manuscripts and documents, handmade books, and books from different cultures.

You can organise your own group, or I can put you into a group . Each group can then arrange the times for each session that suits them.

Fleurieu Farmers frustrated and angry with newly imposed water levy

S

eventeen Fleurieu farmers from industries across all forms of agriculture including dairy, sheep, beef and horticulture production met recently to discuss the effects of the Water Levy being imposed on their farms.

The Levy introduced by the Natural Resources Management (NRM) Board in the Western Mount Lofty Ranges which includes the Fleurieu Peninsula, was announced late last year and came into effect on 1 July.

The NRM Board claims that it has consulted widely on this matter, however, the reality is that the

Board pays lip service to the consultative process and then proceeds to misrepresent or ignore the advice it receives from industry associations and individuals alike.

The quantum of the Levy is based on each farmers allocation of water which can be taken from either surface water run-off or ground water as determined by the NRM Board. The amount of the Levy is such that some rural properties will incur a charge of some thousands of dollars annually, no doubt causing added financial pressures.

The NRM Board claims the Levy to

be equitable. How can the Board possibly claim equity when the Levy is mandatory for all farmers engaged in milk production and applies disproportionately to a select few farmers who have also chosen to apply for a water licence to undertake irrigation, whether the water is used or not?

Any farmers refusing or unable to pay the Levy will be obliged to relinquish their licence. Farmers have 90 days to pay before debt recovery action is initiated. Non payment for three years or more may result in the Minister selling

The bureaucratic ideology of the NRM Board that causes them to pursue this agenda clearly runs contrary to the message conveyed in Premier Wetherill’s press release of July 8th 2014 calling for less red tape and a more competitive business environment.

In summary this new Water Levy is just another tax grab that farmers can ill afford.

Yankalilla Art August meeting have often read in Art Magazines that Art Critics use the phrase’ a burst of colour’ when referring to a particular painting but our August tutor, Kevin Golding, make his acrylics actually precisely do that.

With a few random spots of coloured acrylic ink and his trusty air blower he was able to transform the canvas into a kaleidoscope of shapes and colour. The liquidity of the inks allowed them to be manipulated with an air brush or were allowed to blend themselves into abstract patterns.

However, by placing the ink spots in particular positions the blending created an ‘abstract’ reality of , for example an underwater scene or a flower garden. All the canvases when finished were brightly coloured and appeared highly varnished. Kevin worked quickly and confidently with this medium, but it did prove to be a messy medium and plenty of floor and table covering was needed. All members of the group did have the chance to ‘squirt and blend’ on one of his large

canvases and it was amazing to see the painting grow, spread and change form before our eyes. For me and I am sure others, it was a very interesting and exciting experience because the outcomes were so unpredictable. This medium, however, had a main drawback, that of the length of time it took to dry.

All in all it proved to be a fun day.

After lunch Kevin who is also a Water Colour artist, gave individual help to members or answered questions about aspects of his demonstration. For example, where to buy the acrylic inks, cost and how quickly are they used up?

Steampunks in Second Valley

O

n Saturday 15 August, about 20 ‘Steampunkers’ descended on Second Valley beach to the delight and awe of the tourists and locals alike. Dressed in some unusual garb that included walking canes, pith helmets, top hats, a spyglass, goggles, bustiers and plenty of lace, the men and women who took part in this exciting first event and afternoon tea at the Soldiers Memorial Institute, certainly added their unique creativity to the area.

Steampunk refers to a sub-genre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy, which could also be described as neo-Victorian. It may feature anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions. The stories of HG Wells and Jules Verne have also inspired the Steampunks.

Steampunk may also incorporate elements of genres such as horror, historical fiction, alternative history or other branches of what might be called ‘speculative fiction’. In addition, there is also the ABC3 show called Steam Punks.

Dressing up seemed to come very naturally to most people who attended the Steampunk Afternoon Tea and it offered a new dimension to getting acquainted with people one had never met before. Paul Thomas, who is also one of the actors in Sealand Theatre’s upcoming show Songs of the Sea, was the fearless leader of the group. Dressed in his great purple coat, he is to be thanked for producing a rollicking-good Steampunk day!

Paul Thomas explained... “I organised a Steampunk afternoon tea as a fundraiser for the Second Valley Hall, on 15/8/15 It was $5 entry to all over 16 and a bring and share afternoon tea. We had some Victorian era inspired games; Nerf gun dueling followed by some tea dueling.

Then we went down to the beach for some photos.”

“I am planning to have another Steampunk afternoon tea next year” said Mr Thomas.

furniture/freight run weekly Adelaide to Yankalilla & surrounding areas

oung women in rural, regional and remote South Australian communities can win a trip to Canberra by entering the Country to Canberra Essay Competition.

Country to Canberra is an excellent program for young women from regional Australia who aspire to a future leadership role, and I encourage students in Years 10 or 11 to enter the competition.

This year’s essay competition involves a 500word essay on the following question: if you were Prime Minister for a day, what would you do to help achieve gender equality?

The purpose of the essay competition is to empower young women living in regional, rural and remote Australia, and to connect them with politicians and executives to expand their career networks, bolster self-confidence and motivate them to assume leadership roles in their local communities.

Winners (one from each state as well as the Northern Territory) will receive an all-expensespaid trip to Canberra including special private tours of Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial, and a program of meetings with Ministers and women in senior leadership roles.

It’s a unique and challenging learning experience, and I’m confident there are many young women across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island who

aspire to be leaders and would benefit from the program.

ver many years Mark Pearse has made outstanding contributions to the welfare and well-being of students, staff and school community of the Yankalilla Area School.

He has been a chaplain, provided art and craft classes for students, designed and painted sets for school productions and supported many other school activities. For many years Mark has been the main stay for the breakfast programme that he oversees each Monday and Friday morning with the help from volunteers from the local churches.

Recently, at a ceremony held at the Seaton Family Centre in Adelaide, Mark was presented with a prestigious award from The Schools Ministry Group (SMG) who operate the chaplaincy services through Pastoral Care Workers in South Australian Schools. The Award was given for a “Local Church Volunteer – Significant Contribution.” Mark, clearly honoured by this recognition said, “It is an award for the community.

It’s for all those people who give freely of their time and talents to serve the youth of the district.”

Nature Play SA is a not-for-profit association established to increase the time South Australian children spend in unstructured play outdoor in

the reptiles during winter but they get first priority above the humans. All the animals are housed in their own enclosures on the property. Kim is the managing director of Corporate Roses and the Fleurieu Garden Centre in Myponga. Kim is Passionate in his promotion of roses and gardening in South Australia and our wonderful Fleurieu. The official opening on Show Day Oct 3rd is on the Main stage at 12noon.

Yankalilla Show

he Yankalilla Show in conjunction with the Normanville Natural Resource Centre presents Animal Capers at this year’s show. Animal Capers was established in 2002, by Jodie who has worked in a variety of Zoos and Aquariums in Australia, and undertaken various TAFE courses in this field.

Jodie is helped by a team of wonderful volunteers who provide you with a friendly and safe environment when interacting with these amazing creatures. The animals are tame and people friendly which makes the experience a delight. Some of the animals are hand raised that’s why they are so tame and friendly. Jodie has a specialist permit to keep these unique animals which is obtained through National Parks and Wildlife Services. Animal Capers is run from a 10 acre property south of Adelaide, which has no mains electricity and relies on solar and wind power. This makes it hard to heat

veryone loves a win-win situation. Especially when it’s easy. So Planet Ark put together some ‘toner tips’ that are good for the environment, will save your workplace money, and are just easy to do.

1. Tone It Down Not every printout needs to be presentation ready.

Most printer outputs are for personal use. Setting the default to “draft” will reduce toner usage.

Choosing black ink only will also save on coloured ink when you don’t need a full-colour print out.

2. Double Up Using double-sided printing as the default setting will help reduce paper use. For the super keen, print two or more pages per side of the sheet.

3. Friendly Fonts Choosing different fonts can change the amount of ink and toner used. Good font choices include Century Gothic, EcoFont, Times Roman, Calibri and Cambria as their characters are thinner (or have tiny holes in the case of EcoFont) that use less ink.

4. Preview for Errors Make sure you print preview your document before hitting ‘print’ so you can check for formatting errors. It will save you toner, paper and time.

5. Product Stewardship When in the market for a new printer, look for a brand that believes in product stewardship and takes responsibility of the cartridges they produce.

WEED OF THE MONTH BLACKBERRY NIGHTSHADE (Solanum nigrum) (Photos: E. Cousins, plant, cluster of young fruit) nown by many other names such as black nightshade, this erect, bushy weed is wellknown to many of us, because it spreads so easily on roadsides, waste ground, cracked footpaths etc.

It is native to a band of countries from Morocco to India. Don’t confuse this plant with deadly nightshade (Altropa belladonna): the flowers of deadly nightshade are individual whereas this one has pendant clusters of white flowers (with a hint of purple). The slightly hairy leaves of blackberry nightshade are a dull green, also with a purplish tinge. The fruit are green when young (see photo), but darken to a dull purple later. See the way the 5 little sepals (those leaf-like bits at the top of the fruit) sit apart from each other? This property helps distinguish this solanum from other solanums.

rees For Life needs volunteers to help reach its annual target of growing around more than 500,000 local native seedlings for South Australian farmers and revegetation projects.

South Australia has one of the worst land clearing records in the nation, so the seedlings grown through Trees For Life’s Tree Scheme not only help revegetate the land, but also help counteract some of South Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Trees For Life seedlings are also local natives.

This means they are water efficient, adapted to local conditions, occur naturally and therefore have a higher survival rate, pose no risk of becoming weed species, provide homes for local fauna and restore local ecosystems.

To be a volunteer grower all you need is a sunny backyard, and the commitment to care for the seedlings every day over a six-month period.

“Every November growers are given soil, seed, fertiliser, gravel mulch and a step-by-step instruction booklet,” says Trees For Life Chief Executive Officer Natasha Davis.

“They then fill the tubes with the soil and fertiliser mix, sow the seed and water the seedlings every day over summer. Once germinated, the seedlings require full sun, making them hardy enough to withstand the South Australian climate.”

Trees For Life also offers grower workshops for those wanting to learn how to sow and raise their seedlings and have ongoing access to a Tree Scheme support officer.

New Goals for Yankalilla Hockey Club

T

he Yankalilla Hockey Club are the proud owners of a new set of hockey goals. The goals were made by Paul Sieben from Yankalilla Metalcraft who donated his labour and facilities to manufacture the goals. The Yankalilla Community Opportunity shop donated $1200 towards the project which covered the cost of the steel. The Club is very thankful for these contributions towards the new goals. They will replace the goals that the club has used for the past 30 years.

The Hockey Club held a very

successful Quiz Night in late July which was attended by over 100 people and raised $2300. These funds will be used to upgrade the interior of our clubhouse. Our grateful thanks go to all of the local businesses who generously donated vouchers and prizes for the quiz night.

I

don’t intend to make a habit of this but a little way into a walk from the car park by the Lady Bay shacks to the shacks by the Hobart anchor car park, I came across a large blue plastic bag and picked it up. To cut a long story short - This really short walk turned into a fairly long one, time wise because as I came across string, rope, plastic, etc., put it into the bag I’d found

just to see how much trash was actually left on the beach. I was really shocked and somewhat disgusted to find that I easily filled the bag and could have still picked up more.

People come to our area to take advantage of our great beaches but then just dump their trash. This photo shows how much was collected in one short walk.

Yankalilla Kindergarten Visit Yankalilla Museum

T

he Yankalilla Kindergarten recently visited the Yankalilla Museum as part of their program of local excursions. The group aided by the support of volunteer parents trekked the short journey to the Museum in challenging conditions but were greeted by the warmth of the museum’s guides led by Joylyn Tiller. The group then split up and explored the different areas of the museum.

The children were very interested in the old style sewing machine and how it worked while the tractors gave the children plenty of fun exploring their moving parts and bouncy seats! The museum visit helped the children to understand different technologies of past generations and it is an enjoyable way to help the children make connections of their sense of place within the wider world both past and present. Thanks must go to the parents for their understanding in light of the weather conditions and a big thank you to the Yankalilla Museum for providing a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Inman Valley Tennis Club

wo members of the Inman Valley Tennis Club recently attended an Introduction to ANZ Tennis Hot Shots course at Grange Lawn Tennis Club. David Grainger who is the head Coach at Henley South was the facilitator for the course.

The Inman Valley Club ran a very successful Hots Shots program last season with 27 children participating in the program which uses modified equipment. The Hots Shots programme aims to provide a fun and enjoyable atmosphere for beginners whilst learning the fundamentals and skills for tennis.

Yankalilla Men’s Probus Club

O

ur most recent meeting was held on Tuesday 4th August. There was a good turnout despite the chilly weather. It was uplifting to see the smiling face of Colin Clark back again after an absence. It was also pleasing that Des Chilton has bravely volunteered to be Vice President for the rest of the year.

The member’s profile was given by the venerable Ray Clarke. He has lived and worked in this area for all his life. This almost qualifies him as a local. He is a proud graduate of the Wattle Flat University. Ray has an extensive repertoire of amusing yarns about his early days.

Our guest speaker was the veteran vet Roger Moulton. He has been a veterinarian for 53 years. He graduated from Sydney University in 1962 and has worked in the UK, Middle-East and around Australia.

He had many interesting & amusing stories to relate. He has treated many animals such as tigers, snakes with mouth ulcers, horses & birds.

Most of his work involved cats & dogs which think so differently.

Cats have only a veneer of civilization and are much more difficult to handle. Vets receive many scratches but only the occasional nip.

Most people are very emotionally attached to their animals and are willing to spend whatever it costs to make their animal better. Vets receive many complaints about treatment costs but people forget that a well equipped veterinary clinic has expensive diagnostic equipment & skilled staff etc. An anti venom treatment for snake bite can cost $700 with no certainty of recovery.

Roger told the story of a family that brought a very still duck into the clinic. He told them that the duck was dead but they would not believe him. There was a cat in the clinic and Roger had the cat sniff out the duck. There was also a

The Owl Versus The Maggies

F

or those who may be saying ‘not maggies again’ – do not despair as this will finish this season’s maggie trilogy until next year.

However, I did want to share this experience as it probably will not occur again, I am sure was a ‘one-off’!

It is a well known fact that maggies are up very early trilling their hearts out, greeting a new day or whatever joy overtakes them, some may have the opinion that these Australian icons do it deliberately for those who like a sleep-in, don’t like these birds particularly or for whatever reason.

Enough to say that for those who do not dislike them, it becomes a slight annoyance when their rest is disturbed not by just a few maggies enjoying their new day but, more like a horde being particularly intrusive.

On this particular morning, surrounding the large gum tree at the front of our house there appeared a mob of maggies, many more than a family warbling together. They were frantically more or less dive bombing the tree as though there was an intruder amid the branches.

dressing gown and went out to investigate, we were starting to get more agitated than the birds.

What a sight!

As they flew around and hovered by the gum tree, they were attracting more and more to join them, which in turn became just as upset! They would fly away circle and return more upset than before.

Nothing could be seen in the tree, no cat or alien, but still they flew in and away again to be joined by yet more to return and not warble but protest in a cacophonous manner.

I don’t imagine there would have been many maggies anywhere else than outside out house!

Hubbie, deciding that it probably looked a bit stupid standing outside our house looking up at a gum tree opted for more important chores, chooks to feed and water, straw to spread, much more civilised than wasting his time by watching birds.

There was no let up at all out the front and, by now neighbours had ventured out to see what was happening on this normally quiet Sunday morning!

Actually, that was not the first time we have seen an owl, but the first we have seen what it’s presence does to another feathered species protecting their young and habitat.

I

n 1854 one of our early settlers, Nelson Leak, donated land at Normanville for the building of a Wesleyan church, with an adjoining cemetery.

Leak and his wife, Elizabeth, and their four children had arrived in South Australia in 1849. Nelson died in 1869 and was reputedly buried in the cemetery though there is no headstone for him. His wife had died in 1856, and was reputedly the earliest burial that we know of in this cemetery.

Other early burials are those of Mary Ann Roads who died on 10th September, 1957. A little less than two years later, August 20th 1859, her son Isaac died aged 4 years. The cause of his death was given as laryngitis. Mary’s gravestone reads: “Affliction sore long time I bore Physicians were in vain.

Till God was pleased death should me seize To ease me of my pain.”

Three graves have connections with the early millers in Yankalilla and Normanville. The three flour mills in Yankalilla and Normanville were owned and operated by John Dodd, brothers Eli and John Butterworth, and William Fergusson. George Fergusson, born at Gorge Mill, died in March 1958 aged 1 year 9 months. He was the son of William Fergusson.

According to a report in the South Australian Register the child, wandering from the house, had died after walking through scalding water that had run from the mill’s water into an ash pit. He received “…such fearful injuries that he died a few hours afterwards…”

Mary Archer Dodd, the wife of John Dodd, a miller, died on 12th January, 1871, and is buried in this cemetery. John Dodd had arrived in 1845 and worked as a miller in Adelaide until 1851. In 1853 he bought land about a mile south of Normanville on what is now the Main South Road. The site is

known as Mill paddock, immediately to the north of the site on which Fergusson’s mill was later built. Dodd built a mill, the first in the district, known as the Yankalilla Mill, with a house also on the land.

When Dodd was declared insolvent in 1859 he sold the mill to Eli Butterworth, and in the 1860s it was dismantled.

John Butterworth, third son of John and Isabella Butterworth, died in September 1876 aged 17 years. The cause of his death was given as a diabetic coma. John Butterworth senior, along with his brother Eli, bought land from John Wordsworth Heathcote and built a flour mill. Eli later bought the land adjoining the mill and extended the cottage, now Bungala House, that was on the land. John settled at Normanville, his house adjoining the Butterworth’s grain store.

This cemetery, like many others, has a number of unmarked graves which obviously belong to babies or children. Being the only cemetery in the town at the time of the birth of the Berrill triplets it is likely that they are buried there. Thomas

Berrill, the triplets’ father was one of the first police troopers stationed at the Normanville police station. A notice in Register Personal Notices, 16-4-1857, records: “on the 11th, at Normanville Yankalilla the wife of Mr. T. Berrill was delivered of 3 sons”. John and Thomas were stillborn, and William died at 3 days old. We do not know where these triplets were buried, but as this was the only cemetery in the town at the time, they may have been buried here. On 26th August,, 1865 the Berrills lost another son, William George who died of bronchitis at the age of 7 weeks.

he minor round of Netball will finish on August 22nd and then the Preliminary Finals will be held at Strathalbyn on Saturday 29th August, the Preliminary Final will be on the following Saturday 5th September at Encounter Bay, while the Grand Final will be on Saturday 12th September at Myponga. There are two Senior teams in the Finals, the Senior 4 and Senior 7 teams.

Four Junior teams will be competing in Finals – Intermediate 5 and the three teams of 13 and

Under. This is a great achievement for all these girls and we wish them all the best. Come along to any of these venues to support the Yankalilla Netball Club. There is a $5 entry fee to all the Finals. GO TIGERS Our AGM will be held in September, please see the notice in the window at Solahart in the main street for details.

An illustrated talk by Dr Iris Iwanicki.

Dr Iris Iwanicki is qualified in planning and architectural heritage research. She will provide an overview of her work for the Yankalilla Council to date in reviewing heritage places and spaces. Many items were identified within a heritage review of Region 4, which is essentially the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island by the State back in 1985.

Iris will discuss what she has found so far, and provide an overview of where to from here.

Future steps proposed as part of the Council heritage review will include residents and owners, and all people invited to let council know about the places and spaces that make Yankalilla special.

UPCOMING PHARMACY & NEWSAGENCY CHANGES The Normanville Pharmacy and Newsagency will be undergoing some exciting and new changes. Recent Pharmacy guidelines stipulate that the pharmacy must now have a separate private counselling area, rather than our simple desk and chair. We have no room in the current Pharmacy layout to achieve this, and we therefore have no option but to build a private counselling room in the current Newsagency. Subsequently we are forced to look for a new home for the Normanville Newsagency.

The Pharmacy premises will keep the x-lotto agency, which will help offset our increased rent. So please continue to come to the Normanville Pharmacy for your x-lotto.

We believe the Newsagency and paper round is an important facet of our community. To help facilitate that it remains so, we are prepared to give the newsagency business away for free. This includes remaining stock, the paper round and fixtures and fittings at no charge. Hopefully someone will be glad to take this wonderful opportunity of running their own small business.

If anyone is interested in the newsagency, or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact Emma or Geoffrey at the Normanville Pharmacy on 85583446 If no one is prepared to take on the Newsagency before the 30th September, then unfortunately we will be forced to close down the newsagency, as this is the deadline imposed on us for the new private counselling room by the pharmacy regulations. Hopefully this is not the case.
