Citizenship Ceremony

n Friday 1st August an enthusiastic group of friends attended the Yankalilla Council Chambers for the Citizenship Ceremony of Chris Donovan. Chris whose family migrated to Australia from the UK when he was only 14 has lived in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

While he and his wife Jan have travelled widely in Australia they have chosen to settle in our lovely

part of the world to retire. They announced that they are about to become grey nomads and visit their family in WA as well as enjoy their love of the great outdoors, fishing and golfing. The Ceremony was attended

by Major General Vikram Madam of the Department of Multicultural and Ethic Affairs and Mayor Malcolm Schlein presented Chris with his Citizenship Certificate and a native plant to commemorate the occasion.

Women With Fibre

omen with Fibre’s recent activities include a very successful exhibition of our members work on July 21. A bus load of delegates from a recent international lace congress in Adelaide, together with a good number of local people from Yankalilla and surrounding areas, enjoyed the show. The photo shows Nancy Duggan with one of her hand made baskets which formed part of the exhibition. Other members displayed beautiful lace, petit point, quilting, embroidery, knitting and tatting.

On August 11, Women with Fibre conducted a workshop on the lacemaking technique of tatting, led by Lyn Smith. These are just a few of the activities of Women with Fibre

which hold its regular meetings on the second Monday of each month.

ello Readers, The controversy over the future plans for the Yankalilla Library have been lingering in the background over the past month. I have received a number of emails on the subject, however I have left them all out as there are 2 more public meetings to discuss the Library this month. Those interested in the outcomes and want to have their say should go along.

The NBN roll out is happening in out area, some will have noticed the various crews working in holes in the ground. It was interesting that they sent out a media release, patting themselves on their collective heads, stating that about 160 residents are nearly able to have the new broadband. Out of 6000 nationally! Wow! That’s great! Maybe the next generation will finally get it all connected, I know I won’t be holding my breath in anticipation. Will it be as good as they say? One day we will find out.

The Council Elections are almost here. Please have your say and use your vote. If not, don’t complain about who gets in.

The Deep Creek Conservation Park is having their Open Day on the 21st September from 11am to 2pm.

Entry to the park is free. There will be lots to see and do and be entertained by. See the advert on page 23 for more details.

he Cape Jervis Community Market will be at Wirrina on Sunday 7th September as part of the Bluegrass Music Festival. Stalls will be ready for business at 10am and will close at 3pm.

A new and exciting stall will be from the Whistling Pig Farm. Their fresh pork products will also be available at our other markets. The usual twelve to fourteen stalls of high quality local products and the CFS barbeque make it worth a visit.

The Cape Jervis Community Market will also be part of the Deep Creek Conservation Park Open Day. This was an enormous success last year and promises to be so this year.

women from around Australia who run their own farms. Her popular third book, Almost an Island: the Story of Robe (2013) captures the history and stories of this special seaside gem of South Australia.

Three lively poets at Myponga brewery

T

he eccentric venue of the Smiling Samoyed Brewery just off the Main South Road in Myponga was the ideal setting for three dynamic poets at the Books and Words Group’s third AGM on August 7. It was a fun evening for 35 visitors from Aldinga, Glenelg and Myponga as well as from Nor man ville, Yank alilla an d Carrickalinga.

A report of the past year’s activities from Chairperson, Lorraine McLoughlin, reflected the range of events and places of the Group’s activities over twelve months. Events varied from pantomime to Shakespeare performance, discussion

of a novel over dinner, a satiric send up at the footy club and an evening with Dylan Thomas at Bungala House.

Some chancy events have entailed a considerable outlay by BWG but the association reported being on a sound financial basis and can risk lively ideas and good promotion: so far it is keeping well ahead so that such costs are always redeemed.

Tasting local beers or warming with a red beside the wood fire, members were in fine form by the time brief formalities and elections finished to listen to these original and accessible poets who caused much mirth along with serious reflection.

SALA Opening at ‘Cool Room’

A

South Australian Living Artists (SALA) exhibition was opened on Saturday 2nd August at the “Cool Room” of the former Myponga Cheese Factory now the Myponga Markets. Over 50 people gathered to view the great works of art offered by a wide range of Fleurieu artists.

Visitors enjoyed wines and nibbles as well as the beautiful music of our local singer Wendy McPhee and her accompanist Peter Richman. Anne Cross provided background history of SALA and the “Cool Room” and then asked Mayor Malcolm Schlein to officially open the exhibition.

Mayor Schlein commented that he had visited the “Cool Room” many years ago on a tour with the Myponga Cheese Factory and that it now made an excellent gallery and is a credit to those who had the vision to use this space so creatively”. The SALA Festival was held throughout metropolitan and regional SA from 1st to 24th August.

(SALA) in their Second Valley restaurant. The selection of paintings and sculptures created by Adelaide artist Jane Smeets named “Big Sky” decorate both the ground and upper level eating areas. The large bright canvasses of birds are a particular delight and it is well worth a visit to the restaurant to see Jane’s innovative work.

Yankalilla Cricket Club Three reasons to celebrate

P

reparations are under way for a massive year ahead at Yankalilla Cricket Club, both on & off the field.

This will be the first year in many that Yankalilla will field an independent A Grade side. After a taste of the big time last year with a combined Rapid Bay A Grade, the lads voted on giving it a go on their own, with a few more youngsters stepping up to the mark for the first time. Your support from the sidelines would be very welcome if you’ve got a lazy Saturday arvo to fill... you’ll recognise most of them from the football club.

Another reason to celebrate this season is the success at receiving a Department of Recreation & Sport facilities grant. The old clubrooms are looking very tired with a few safety issues that need rectifying as well. The committee had previously applied for a grant to help fix things up and had been disappointed at missing out but a recent letter brought a smile to their dials to learn that 50% of nearly $20,000 worth of renovations will be covered. Works will include a new serving bar, airconditioning and an internal security roller door that will enable them (at long last) to display some historical memorabilia that has long been missing from their walls.

The most significant reason to celebrate was discovered by pure chance, and in the nick of time. A few months ago, a gentleman from Aldinga had contacted Gary Hogben (Outgoing President) in an attempt to solve a family mystery.

In his possession was an elaborate ‘Cup’ (pictured) that had been presented to a family member back in the late 1800’s from the ‘Yankalilla Cricket Club Ladies’. After much searching (Google is a wonderful thing), and many hours of pouring

over microfiche versions of old Newspapers, it appears there was a Yankalilla Cricket Club Sports Day held on 26th May 1884 with wonderful prizes (writing desks, cruet sets, etc) given to the winners of various sporting events. The person with the most ‘points’ in a specific set of events was presented with the Cup, valued at £5 5s.

When the Cricket Club discovered its heritage was pre-1884, they continued searching backwards and managed to uncover their history dated back to somewhere between March 1864 & March 1865, making this year (2014/15) the 150th Anniversary of the Yankalilla Cricket Club! Watch this space for planned celebrations.

I have the authority to enter into a contract on behalf of council vide Section 37 of the LGA. A member of council has no direct authority over an employee of the council with respect to the way in which the employee performs his duties vide Section 59(3) of the LGA. So the article published is factually incorrect in the following areas.

The contract was not hastily drawn up, and the fees and charges when compared with Victor Harbor and Holdfast Bay were found to be quite comparative.

Mr Rodrigues would know this as he has history with both these councils in relation to food vending operations.

An estimate of power consumption for the year for the Normanville food van was approximately $1000. $1650 was to council when removing power consumption $650 per year. I was unaware Mr Rodrigues received a disability pension. At no time did I ask to see his profit and loss statements or declared earnings in my calculation of the rate rise. I hold no information of turn over for this business. The previous contract equated to $32 per week. A conversation was held with Mr Rodrigues where I advised him of the new rate being $5000 for 6 months with no power to be supplied and a location change. This equates to $208 per week. He was provided a copy of the contract and requested to review it prior to further discussion. Neither John Bednall nor I called for haste to sign the contract. As a business operator we expected Mr Rodrigues to take time to decide upon its viability.

The accusations that this was a grab for cash are outlandish. The suggestion that he was providing a community service as opposed to a commercial operation is ludicrous.

Complaints had been received as to the location of the van and were investigated by the environmental health officer. He was provided another location as close to existing chairs and cover as possible.

I am employed to work in the best interests of my community. I take my role very seriously. It is not in the interests of my community to heavily subsidise a business for a non rate payer.

I am an experienced senior manager with a corporate background, new to local government.

I am proud to reside as a rate payer in Normanville. I am unashamed to say, that as an officer of council I support our local businesses. They employ our people and support our tourism. I listen to local business; the current economy is hurting many of them.

I don’t manage peoples business; I help build a supportive environment for them to succeed.

I would also like to congratulate the Second Valley shop for presenting to council in June and reminding us all how valued local business is. Living in an area, knowing who our neighbours are and caring for each other. Powerful statements and well done.

I extend to all the businesses in our district my support for their futures.

I extend my apology to all the people slandered in the July article by a business operator.

t seems that this community newsletter is being used by peddlers of religion to sell their wares. I wonder what visitors to our town think when they read it. Maybe they think they have come to some American style Bible belt backwater where the non religious are heavily discriminated against and stupidity is worn like a badge of honor.

Religious pushers love to give testimonials designed to make us believe in the power of religious faith. The last newsletter featured a story about a Ku Klux Klan member, a convicted murderer who of course repented and was saved by Jesus.

When will we here the testimonials of the catholic pedophile rapist priests. You can guarantee that they will also repent and be saved by Jesus.

Here is my brief testimonial. I am a middle aged man with no criminal record. Five speeding fines over 40 years, never been in a fight, never been questioned by police, raised two happy and successful children, Apex member for 7 years, volunteer ambulance officer for 3 years and currently doing volunteer work for an RSL club. I have some wonderful friends and get on well with my neighbors. I treat people with respect and regard myself as honest and polite. Basically I am an average Australian. However I have never consulted the bible or prayed to a god. It would be easier for me to thread a camel through the eye of a needle than to believe in supernatural beings.

Now who do you think will be going to heaven, the KKK member, the catholic pedophile rapist priest or me? I am in for some serious gnashing of teeth, wailing and burning because that’s what dreadful sinners like me deserve. Does this sound a little bit immoral to you?

We currently have a client list of over 350, with 3 cars and some 40 drivers who nominate their availability.

With the increasing demand for medical services by our ageing population, there is an increasing demand on our transport service. More volunteer coordinators would reduce the impact of these changes on those more vulnerable in our community.

Remember! The current service is provided by volunteer drivers only for the frail and aged or those with a disability and their carers who have no other means of transport to medical appointments.

Donations made by clients help partly cover fuel costs.

After many years of dedicated service most of the volunteer coordinators for the Yankalilla Council Transport Service will be retiring early 2015. If the community wish to retain the service in its current format, then we need volunteers to step up and help fill these vacancies.

The model currently is of 5 teams of coordinators on duty for 2 to 3 week stints and operate from home i.e. they work 2 weeks on 8 weeks off. Alternatively we are looking at offering an ‘in house’ model of e.g. 2 consecutive days a fortnight (pro-rata dependant on number of volunteers) this may result in a reduced booking access i.e. set times for part of the week and other changes from the current format.

We are appealing to members of our community to seriously consider becoming a coordinator of this valuable service.

Read the council minutes online. Just brush over a few sessions and you will work out whom the players are. Look for the dumb decisions and look who pushed them through. Remember as a ratepayer you are a shareholder and the council is the board. They are there to make decisions for us and look after our goodwill. To be impartial, selfless and not biased or obstructive.

I believe we need to promote winter tourism. We need to be known as a recreational wonderland. The mountain bikes are up in the forest yet we don’t promote the sport. We have cliff jumping.

Recreational fishing is a booming industry.

We should be building artificial reefs just off Normanville. Aged care is a growth industry and should be invested in. It might need concessions to entice more private enterprise. We need a substantial industrial estate that offers low cost land holdings designed to attract investment. I suggest that area past the abattoirs. Again, concessions and planning. Rezone the area.

It is up to the farmers but limit the block sizes so we don’t end up with and ugly shanty town like Hackam industrial estate.

Lonsdale style. It’s a sad story when the biggest sole employer is the council.

Off shore moorings for day charters at Normy. There should be permanent off shore moorings at lady bay.

Speed boat and jet ski exclusion zones.

Nothing ruins the serenity more than a jet ski. We want to be a destination (not a whistlestop).

e would like to thank the Normanville Natural Resource Centre for visiting our home last month to do a free energy assessment on our house.

We thought we knew a lot about saving

energy, but were surprised to learn other useful tips. Kym, the trained energy assessment volunteer spent some time reading our electricity bill and discovered that we were paying a $15 monthly meter reading fee. This has now stopped saving us over $100 per year. Kym also provided us with new light globes and a great heated throw rug, which is very convenient and cheap to run, all free. We borrowed a power mate which measures energy used and attached it to our fridge, freezer, fish tank and some smaller appliances. This provided us with cost per year of operating these items and these results were very surprising! We would recommend this service to everyone using electricity as it is a free service and all the items installed are free. Contact the centre on 8558 3644!

f the season is right, then we can smell the roses literally and physically.

What a lovely sensation it is - so pleasant to the nose and the senses, we have all at some time experienced this pleasure, whether it be in our garden or elsewhere.

Sometimes to an occasional pain or annoyance there are others also enjoying the benefits, it seems that bees are most aggressive to a nosy nose.

The metaphorical intonation of ‘smelling the roses’ imparts a similar pleasure as well (not necessarily painful or injurious!)

By ‘smelling the roses’ one can ‘chill out,’ by just letting the brain rid itself of any stressful thoughts and allow us to really see the ordinary everyday actions and movements of others around us.

Years ago, when working in Adelaide, It was so restful to sit in the Rundle Mall, (I say sit as there were actual seats then!) and watch the lunch time crowds busy toing and fro-ing, and the families, students, all intent on their various destinations.

One could imagine and build a story about some of these lunchtime travellers, as fashions provided some relief from the corporate uniform and sometime boring attire.

I enjoy sitting in a reserve, down our way be it our garden parks, or just sitting watching the passing parade, with ‘Digger’ for company and the various passers-by on their way to the shopping areas or other destinations.

There are the regular travellers frequently seen going about their daily business, such as the local can collectors, not a sideways glance, only one purpose in mind, get the cans before someone beats them to it.

It is so restful though not mind blowing for that is too much of the opposite as far as stress is concerned.

Stress is the word of our era and we hear of so much resultant damage, sometimes past any fond redemption of the past gone years when we had not heard of such conditions (perhaps known by a different name).

Pressures of a daily work routine, worries of finances, family and friends appear to be the main contributors to our present stress filled lives.

Personally, I am too old to have any of the above subscribed contributing factors, as I have involved myself in other interests and hobbies to divert any gremlins intruding and making my latter years uncomfortable or worrisome.

To those who, after reading this say they haven’t the time as it is too precious, then I offer an ‘oldy’s’ suggestion.

Try to make it a regular outing, trip, a walk, even riding the old trusty treadly, I guarantee that you will discover during one of these adventures, something you may have never heard of or seen before, perhaps a distant memory of time gone by.

This is what I call ‘smelling the roses’ and, as well as a ‘chill out’ you may even find the real roses to smell, but watch out for those pesky bees, they are doing the same!

The Yankalilla Art Group

embers of the Yankalilla Art Group met for a plein air art session at Wirrina Marina on Thursday 7th August. We thought we would enjoy a nice relaxing day by the water, drawing and painting the boats, scenery and bird life. Instead we found ourselves being thoroughly entertained by camera crews and actors who were shooting scenes for a new Gallipoli movie. Needless to say, we clicked away with our cameras too! When the Police Water Operations Unit arrived and the movie crews and actors broke for lunch, we decided to retreat to the less crowded area of the Wirrina Caravan Park, where Ben, the owner kindly allowed us to hold our plein air art session. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience so much that we would really like to spend more time at both venues in the future. Our thanks to Aaron at the marina and to Ben at the caravan park for a brilliant photography and art session!

The September session is a special “one off” acrylics workgroup with Richard Rogers. As one of Atelier art suppliers, resident artists whose workshops are in constant demand, it is not easy to get hold of – let alone secure a workshop with him!

Then stay and experience all the fun of the 'fair'. The centre will be hosting a snake pit! A variety of venomous snakes are in the pit, together with two Living with Wildlife staff who will answer questions about the snakes and how they behave in close vicinity to humans. An added feature of the Snake Pit is the full-height clear plastic windows on each side to allow safe viewing by children.

It wasn't easy but it certainly made you realise how much plastic is in our daily lives and also got us thinking about where this enormous amount of plastic ends up when we have finished using it.

We hope to include some of the local schools and other community organisations. big thank you to all the volunteers who helped plant 400 trees and shrubs in Bungala Park again this year, especially the Happy Valley Girl Guides who came out in force. Although it was quite cold the sun did make an appearance which made the day quite enjoyable.

After all the hard work, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of roasted veggie soup, steak sandwiches and homemade cake and slice. Tree planting must be hungry work as there was not much left by the end of the day.

Again thanks to everyone involved and to Corey Jackson from Yankalilla Council for all his help in organising and working on the day.

he silvery foliage and daisy-like flower would make this an attractive ornamental in a garden… if it would just stay there! Another garden escapee, this weed is found on the coastal reserve at Cape Jervis, but it certainly isn’t restricted to there. It is a major problem in other S.A. reserves, such as the Hallett Cove and Scott Creek Conservation Parks.

You’ll recognize it by its woolly stems, heavily lobed leaves, and daisy -like flowers which vary in colour from white through pink and purple.

In sand dunes, it can grow into dense mats (see photo). These mats cause local plants to be lost through shading, smothering and competition for resources. Apparently, this weed can also cause the structure of sand dunes to alter, e.g. by becoming steeper in slope.

Yankalilla Netball Club

he Finals are in full swing now, the Semi Finals were held at Strathalbyn on 30th August.

The Preliminary Final is at Encounter Bay on Saturday 6th September and the Grand Final will be at McLaren Vale on Saturday 13th September. There are at least 3 teams in the Finals. The Senior 7 (D Grade) have only lost one match

this season, so are looking to take out the Premiership. In Juniors two of the 11 and Under teams are going well too and will play finals.

There are a number of other teams who may play finals depending on the results of the last two rounds.

Yankalilla Historical Society

hanks to the Internet we are able to receive news, data and photographs soon after the dust has s e t t l ed o n t h e e v e n t s b e i n g communicated. What a contrast to earlier times when we all depended on the postman. And to even earlier times, before the advent of home deliveries.

T

he first mail service between Adelaide and Yankalilla began in 1843 with Mr. Boord of Wattle Flat as postmaster. Postage for one letter was seven pence (six cents). From 1846 Henry Kemmis was acting as postmaster, servicing a district reaching to Cape Jervis. In 1855 Mr. Heathcote, the local storekeeper became postmaster for Yankalilla. At Myponga Beach Heber Hewett kept the post office in his home, the mail carried over Cadd’s Hill to and from the Myponga post office. Thomas Stacey carried the mail for many years, having started his deliveries when he was just ten years old.

When additions were added to the Normanville Police Station in 1863 telegraphic communications which had been set up in Yankalilla the year before were transferred there. It then became the Telegraph Office, Post Office, Customs Office, Police Station and Local Court. That same year Mr. Limbert, the Post Master and storekeeper at Second Valley left with the mail at 1am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to catch the coach leaving Normanville at 3am.

The first Yankalilla Post Office with telegraphic and money order facilities was built on the site of the present one in 1870.

Around the 1880s John, Polly, James and Emma Lord, then about ten or twelve years of age, took turns at carrying the mail from Second Valley.

They delivered the mail to Delamere, and the Kangaroo Island mail to Cape Jervis. They had to be at Cape Jervis no later than 8am for Mr. Christie to row it over to Penneshaw. After waiting for Mr. Christie’s return with the Island mail they took it to Second Valley where Mr. Limbert, the storekeeper and postmaster, took out the mail for Delamere and put it aside for the children to deliver on the following day.

Mail for delivery to Normanville and beyond had to be at Normanville by 10pm to catch the coach leaving at 3am next day. If there was too much mail to be carried on horseback a spring cart was used, and if there were passengers, a buggy would be brought into service. At that time there were no bridges at the Gorge so the creek had to be forded. During heavy rain, the creek running high, the horses would be unhitched, one ridden across and leading the other carrying the mail.

In June 1910 the foundation stone of a new post office in Yankalilla was laid

by Charlotte Amelia Boucat who had been Post Mistress for twenty-four years.

In January 1920 Andrew Hutchinson

first carried the mails to Noarlunga by motor transport. Two mail vans, driven

by Hutchinson and his brother Fred travelled to Adelaide and back once a week. As motorised trucks and passenger carrying vehicles became available Ted Baldwin and Arthur Langdale took over and motorised the main carrying and passenger services.

The contract to carry mails was let by tender. The mail service left the opposite terminal to that of the passenger service, leaving the GPO at 8am, calling at all post offices en route to Delamere from where it immediately began the return journey.

The passenger service left Yankalilla at 7.30am and returned, leaving the GPO at 4pm the same day.

By the early 1950s the local population had increased greatly, as had the number of pupils attending the schools throughout the district. The school in Yankalilla became an Area school, with students coming from far a-field.

The school buses delivered mail and packages to people along the bus routes, store keepers taking advantage of the bus runs for their customer deliveries.

In 1964 a new post office, the third on the site, was opened in Yankalilla.

Employing twenty-one people, (six in the post office, five in the telephone exchange, three in the repeater station, and seven linesmen), the new building was a recognition of the growing and

Generator To Go!

n Monday July 28th a meeting was held at Normanville Surf Lifesaving Club regarding the future of the stranded wave energy generator at Carrickalinga. Representatives from Department of Planning, Transport and In f r as t ru ctu re ( DP T I ) an d t h e Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) and the receiver provided information and were available to answer questions. The receiver is working to identify the best options for the salvage and gave an undertaking that the generator will be removed. The time frame for removal was uncertain but he indicated that while it may be months away they

hoped to have the process underway within a year. Questions from the floor centred around pollution and stability and we were assured that care has been taken to ensure that there is no pollution from the generator. They also assured us that despite the rough weather the 3500 tonne structure was solidly grounded and the tide and weather would have no effect on its stability and any concerns that it might tip over were unfounded.

In the meantime the prohibition order restricting vessels and peop le undertaking marine activities, including snorkelling, swimming and diving within the immediate surrounds of the structure remains in place.

I was watching Sir David Attenborough again in his documentary called ‘Wild India’ and he was talking about an ancient mygalomorph (spider) called the harvestman which had 4 eyes, and really long legs they lived 400,000,000 years ago in caves with bats, and these caves were in the under growth in rain forests. Fossils have been found in France and Northern America, today we call them ‘Daddy Long Legs’ and their carapace was a large oval shape and their legs were very long almost

straight. They moved around in swarms of 1000 to keep cool. In the UK they are still called the Daddy Long Legs ‘harvestmen’ spiders. In USA they are Sola spiders.

Way back in the 1850’s a woman came to Australia to perform ‘The Spider Dance.’ Her name was Lola Montez. I believe you can Google this.

We have had spiders coming indoors to escape the cold and rain which fills up their burrows and they are attracted to the warm dry conditions. They also come in on fire wood, so please check the wood you are bringing in and give it a brush down outside for safety sake.

A victim reported to me recently that there is a new spray called “Cootex” made by Bayer that you mix with water and spray indoors and out and is made from dandelions flowers and is available at hardware stores. Kills spiders but is environmentally friendly.

100 Years of Red Cross

n Wednesday 20th August Inman Valley Red Cross celebrated their 100 year Anniversary in the Inman Valley Hall. The hall was filled with a large number of people who came from around the district and beyond for the special occasion.

Members reported Red Cross activities from inception when women worked to send clothing and food to the soldiers in the First World War. After a period of inactivity between the wars the organisation was re-formed for the Second World War and has continued ever since.

Fundraising has taken a variety of different forms over the years from gymkhanas, garden parties, afternoon teas, farm days, and many forms of catering.

Mayor Schlein spoke about his admiration for the wonderful work the Red Cross blood bank does in providing the blood collection service and how he was involved during his working career at IMVS. A rose bush was planted each side of the gardens which flank the entry to the hall and the official planting was followed by an afternoon tea of delicious scones for which the Red Cross is famous.

Museum Leads The Way

ello everyone looks like we will have to keep those fires going for a while. On the 4th of August we held a Tupperware party which was very well attended so thankyou all for coming.

We would like to welcome our new Red Cross baby for 2014/15 Kayne (pictured) and his parents Helen &Christopher, grandson of Nola and Bert Edwards.

We would like to thank Bunnings for their contribution to Red Cross who on Saturday 9th August at all their stores donated a sausage sizzle providing all food utensils etc. And manned by Red Cross members (pictured below).

he Yankalilla District Historical Museum Inc. held their AGM on 25th July. Chairman Rob Ryan reported that work continued on landscaping and painting and that new interpretive signs had been installed. Future plans included extending the outdoor shed putting in skylights in the display shed and creating a dedicated area for shearing and grazing.

Ralph Hurrell, a farmer from Inman Valley gave a talk providing an insight into his life in the district. Rob was very pleased to report that the Museum had achieved door takings of $4,000.00 for the previous year which was a record.

Rob said “We are seeing more and more bus trips and we plan to improve our marketing and network with businesses and galleries. The people are coming down to see our Museum and we want to keep them here.”

The Visitor Information Centre has given the Museum much support and is assisting in helping to market to bus groups.

On September 1st there will be a Devonshire Morning Tea at 10am, with a Big Cake Bake and Trading Table in the Uniting Church Hall Yankalilla; with all that home cooking I’m sure you would enjoy yourself.

On October 4th our branch will be having a trading table at the Yankalilla Show so please call in and see us.

Don’t forget the Blood service will be at Victor Harbor on the week of October 29th please help if you can. Should you feel the urge to join Red Cross our next meeting will be September 1st and you would be most welcome.
