“Fella’s Night”

n Wednesday 30th August, the O Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre preschool and childcare

children invited their special “fella” to come and share a special evening of play and fun. The main attraction – especially when it got dark was our “backyard bonfire”. The children had immense fun, gathering around the bonfire with their special “fella’s” and

ormer local, Daniel Banks has recently won the 2017 SA MX 450 title (pictured). “It was probably the best one yet” said Daniel. “After a DNF at MRAI I had the pressure to win 8 Moto's in a row if I wanted to win the championship. Winning all 3 Moto's yesterday and getting the job done was an incredible feeling.”

ello Readers, et’s create a community asset. By installing L lighting, air-conditioning and toilets, enabling H I managed to pack all the stuff sent to me in to this issue and not miss anything. Then a late item turned community use of the building.

The big shed, 15mx24m, was built to house the photography and undercover traders at our local Agricultural Show and has been in use for this purpose now for several years. It is very much underutilised for the rest of the year.

This idea will transform the building into a very usable and affordable community venue. The upgrade will be to the standard of an undercover gymnasium, allowing it to be used for all types of community events that require a large area protected from the elements, such as sporting, exhibitions, markets and entertainment events.

Fleurieu Film Festival year-old filmmakers. Another new initiative will be a Film Makers Forum on Sunday 11 February. Presented in conjunction with industry partners it will further our aim to engage and support Australian filmmakers.

The Awards Night screening on Friday 9 February 2018 will again be held by the lake in the stunning grounds of Serafino Winery at McLaren Vale, where festival patrons can enjoy the best of local produce and wines from Serafino or from food trucks on site. To celebrate this year’s fire theme the night will finish with a spectacular fireworks display.

Call for Entries

leurieu Film Festival is delighted to announce that the third annual Fleurieu Film Festival will be held on 9-11 February 2018 and the Call for Entries is now open.

Submissions for short films up to 8 mins in duration will close 5.00pm Friday 24th Nov 2017. The theme for next year’s festival is FIRE and to be eligible filmmakers must include a reference to fire in their films.

A passion for short film and a desire to support filmmakers inspired the inaugural Fleurieu Film Festival and the response from filmmakers, patrons and sponsors has been brilliant. The first two festivals were sold out and last year 6 world premiere films were screened.

In recognition of a growing interest from younger audiences and tertiary institutions involved in screen production there will be a new award at this year’s festival - the Young Filmmakers Award - for 18 to 24-

Eleanor’s Story: An American Girl In Hitler’s Germany old out at the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Festival, to S numerous 5-star reviews, back for a hit season at the 2017 Adelaide Fringe Festival and fresh from

performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Eleanor’s Story is now touring regional South Australia.

Ingrid Garner wrote and performs this adaptation of her grandmother's, Eleanor Ramrath Garner, awardwinning autobiography, growing up as an American caught in World War II Berlin.

In the fall of 1939, at nine years old, Eleanor and her family left New York on the SS Hamburg bound for Germany where a new job and secure financial future awaited her father in Berlin. Half-way across the Atlantic, Hitler declared war on Poland and their return to America became impossible.

Eleanor struggles to maintain her American identity as she feels herself pulled into the turbulent life roiling around her. She fervently hopes for an Allied victory, yet for years she must try to survive the Allied bombs shattering her neighborhood.

The story of Eleanor and her family is one of excitement and adventure, but also torment and sadness.

Garner narrates as young Eleanor providing insight through the eyes of a child caught up in a bewildering time. She also plays her older brother Frank, her mother and daunting father with such skill you are never confused about who is on stage.

he 2017-18 season was officially opened on Sunday September 10th. President Park Fogarty introduced his committee members then introduced the Mayor Glen Rowlands who opened the season and wished everyone a good year of bowling. Life Membership was presented to Ray Clarke long serving member of our club. Ray won many club association championships over the years, especially teamed with John Stone in the Men’s Pairs competitions. Ray has always supported and worked hard for the Yankalilla Bowling Club and we congratulate him on receiving his long service award.

Pennant season 2017–18 starts on Saturday October 7th for the Open Competition and Thursday 19th for the Ladies Competition.

aylight saving has arrived which means the Yankalilla Golf Club Friday evenings twilight golf is on again. The season will commence Friday October 27th 2017 for handicap adjustments, points for the Summer Cup begins on 3rd November. Hit off times are from 3.30pm to 5pm. For those that can play at a later time let me know and arrangements can be made. The competition this year will be continuous with no break at Christmas. he start of Spring saw a good roll up for our September meeting. We were delighted to welcome guests Ron King and Peter Healey. They seem to be fine gentlemen and we hope they join our club.

We must pay tribute to Geoff Bowyer the Daffodil Man who recently raised $2358 by selling his flowers to the public. All proceeds go to cancer research. This is the seventh year that Geoff has undertaken this worthy cause.

Our guest speaker was crime fiction author David Kilner. Today one in every three books sold is crime fiction or thriller. Of every 100 books borrowed from libraries close to two thirds are in these category. Who says crime does not pay?

David gave a light hearted, interactive and well illustrated talk. He examined crime fiction from its origins 200 years ago to the contemporary form today.

Along the way he looked at the impact of film and television on crime writing. He especially likes the British way of crime writing which explains the “why” rather than just the “who”. His favourite authors include P.D James, Ian Rankin, Elizabeth George and Ruth Rendell.

David’s new book is “The rock art murders”, an earlier book was “ The climate change murders” They should be well worth reading.

It was a most interesting and professional presentation and gave us greater knowledge of crime writing.

Our next meeting will be at 10am on Tuesday 3rd October at the RSL hall, Normanville. Visitors are welcome.

Unfortunately Roe Gartlemann was unwell and unable to run a workshop but we had a pleasant day working on our own choice of a still life or our own photographs. We will plan another workshop for Roe in the future.

ankalilla Bowling Club is very excited to announce it's New look Night Owls Competition. We are shaking things up a little for the upcoming season. We have listened to feedback and believe that this new format and fee structure will breathe new life into what has been a long running, fun night out in the warmer months in our district.

For those that have participated in the past, you will notice a number of changes to the format (see below). The Night Owl Comp is only going to be 6 rounds, with the top of the ladder taking out the trophy (i.e. no Grand Final).

Also, the $65 Social Membership is no longer required, if you do not want to participate in any other competition held throughout the year.

Then your Summer of Social bowls doesn't have to be over, as you are invited to join in both Tuesday Night Comps (see below) in 2018, to continue getting your Summertime fix.

We also welcome new bowlers to our Tuesday Night Competitions. We have modern style bowls you can borrow. We can link you up with others to form a team.

Some things that will never change though: • Anna and Scotty will work hard to make Tuesdays at the club a fun, mostly seamless, night out.

• A plethora of Cockies will squawk their heads off at sunset in the trees along the Bungala.

Second Valley Table Tennis Champions 2017

T

he beautiful village of Second Valley was in a state of euphoric disbelief this week as its table tennis team brought home the bacon in its first Grand Final appearance.

In beating the reigning champions Yankalilla, holders of the title for the past 8 years, the Second Valley team has achieved what many in the Fleurieu Coast Table tennis circles thought was impossible.

The local community has embraced the team’s success, hailing it the most important thing to happen to the area since its beach was named in the top 10 in Australia a few years ago.

Greg Woods from the Second Valley Caravan Park, was ecstatic, saying that… ‘this could herald a stampede of Table Tennis tourism to the town, just as the naming of Second Valley Beach as one of the best in the World has seen a dramatic wave of increased visitation’ Mr Woods and his wife Jo, feted the team with a free coffee and hamburger in recognition, of their efforts. Leonards Mill, whose new owners were too overwhelmed with excitement to make a coherent statement, have offered members of the team half priced entrees when next they visit.

Victorious Second Valley table tennis team Captain, said that he was completely taken aback by the local Community’s reaction.., ‘I had no idea how much a win like this would mean to the Town and its community’, he said Mr Wheatley thanked the local businesses for their generosity and said that whilst it was difficult cutting Mr Woods’s superb hamburger into 9 pieces, each team member did get a sip of the Grande Latte.

For the record the Grand final was an exciting battle, with the lead changing hands at least 7 times. The result was not determined until the final match, Second Valley eventually running out winners 11-9.

the College Board have resolved to merge our two Middle Schools [Years 7 -9] from the commencement of 2018.

All Investigator College Year 7-9 students will, therefore, attend our Victor Harbor Campus from 2018.

They will enjoy refurbished and upgraded classrooms and specialist spaces in close proximity to the Senior School plaza and, of course, the new Senior School. The new Middle School Precinct will continue to be serviced by the College’s complimentary bus service. This will ensure safe and convenient transportation for students from the Goolwa Campus. Ultimately, this initiative will enable a smoother transition for our students to their senior years.

This is a significant and exciting development for the future of the College and the best possible learning environment for our students. I am sure

that you will want to know more about what it means for your child or children.

I warmly invite you to discuss this initiative with our Leadership Team and members of the College Board at our Middle School Information Evening on Wednesday 18 October at the Victor Harbor Campus.

Whilst this is an exciting initiative for our Middle School students, Junior School students at the Goolwa Junior Campus will also benefit. Among other things, they will enjoy increased access to specialist facilities such as the Food and Hospitality, Science and Art centres.

Memberships are for one year from the date of payment. Currently, the membership fees are $15 per single, $25 for a family. The funds keep the theatre afloat – helping with insurance costs, props, publicity flyers, stage décor, costumes etc. Members are entitled to a 10% discount on ordinary events. order to employ a young local, the equipment will only be hired under the supervision of our technician Shannon Hamilton. Shannon has recently produced an excellent short video that showcases the use of the new lighting desk (which was purchased at the beginning of the year with grant funding from the District Council of Yankalilla).

Sealand is also hiring out costumes for public and private functions – at a nominal rate.

We can cover various themes and sizes. All monies raised go back to supporting the theatre.

appily there is not alot from the Men's Shed this month that has not already been reported.'

Happily' because it indicates that the Shed is running to plan without too many hiccups. One of the larger and more important items in the Shed is the dust extractor, considering that children and the odd old man will be using the shed (see photo) you don't muck around with lungs. One of our local ladies did what we all do at some time or another and locked herself out of her house, asked at the Men's Shed if someone could please help her get back in, the Sheddies were only too pleased to be of assistance but this raises a few salient points: do the Sheddies have the aire and appearance of experienced housebreakers? How and with what tools did the dexterous crew carry out their errand of mercy, as has been pointed out in recent issues of Yankalilla Regional News, 'members of the Yankalilla Men's Shed have between them many

different talents and specialities, it looks like they can add another now. While talking about grants (which we weren't but we are now) the Shed Scrounger tracked down a ripper, for a kitchen.

This doesn't mean that the Sheddies will consume any more or any less coffee but now they can have tea with triangle cut cucumber sandwiches off plates and tablecloths instead of bickies out of tins.

Susan has been instrumental in encouraging players, mainly from the Junior ranks to umpire so that there has been a bigger pool of umpires. She has trained these girls with the help of several other senior umpires. With 17 matches to be umpired most weeks it is a big task to organise suitable umpires. Tash Hunt gained her C Grade Umpire Badge recently, congratulations Tash, well done.

Natasha Blesing was presented with the Jodie Scheer Award for all her efforts of umpiring and coaching as well as playing in her first year in the Senior section.

Pentecost’s ongoing series of writing workshops are in the process of writing short stories of under 1,000 words for the project.

‘I felt that the students needed a concrete focus now’ Pentecost said. ‘Our monthly classes have created many great ideas. Now is the moment to gather those ideas together and to share them with others’ she said.

‘I’m disappointed, of course that I failed to attract funding for the Womenwrite project, despite various funding applications.’ ‘One funding body thought the project did not have ‘enough reach’’. ‘Perhaps we will self-fund or crowd-fund this time’ she added. ‘In any case, I am determined to get this project off the ground’.

Both male and female local writers are involved in the project. Crime as a genre is very popular, especially in tourist locations such as this. The small book huts surely reflect the abiding interest of locals and tourists in the genre. ‘It would be great to have a copy of our anthology in all the various accommodation venues’ Pentecost said. ‘The dream is that local writers’ work reaches a wide audience’ she mused.

Years ago while working in Queensland, I was offered an opportunity to spend some time at Uni in Canberra.

Accordingly annual ‘rec leave’ came in handy to attend a two week course touching on journalism and correct use of the English language in depth.

As reading and meanings of words, how to use, spell, and know the meanings has always been a challenge, it was a golden opportunity to become involved and further my education so to speak but, also to enhance a limited knowledge of words in a broader sense.

Two weeks could not be considered enough, however what this course did do, broadened my knowledge and widened my limited usage of how to spell, use words in a way that one word or even one phrase could abbreviate a sentence which would say the same thing but in a shorter more succinct manner.

What appears to be the way nowadays, especially in the newspapers, letters written where the correspondent is either boasting, swallowed a dictionary, or is advertising they are educated!

To have to go through a dictionary to at least discover what the word or phrase means is unnecessary.

Recently we had a health officer call and as he completed his interview, he said there was one question he had left to discuss and then he said can we briefly go through this 'episodic'

question.

To me episodic comes from the base word 'episode'!

Sure enough according to our faithful dictionary meant the same thing.

Then to top off this weird word replacement study, a relative who had been to Uni , studied for 4 years, gained the degree plus a BA as well sent a computer message bemoaning the inefficiency of our state's two top ministers.

The word used was 'internecine'. Rush to the dictionary and the meaning 'destructive'!

So that is why words are so adjustable, don't use a word that is hard to pronounce let alone spell, go for a one syllable whenever possible, still says the same thing.

By the way, K.I.S.S. is short for 'keep it simple stupid' !

Bitterly icy cold, a little sun, and the pretty blossoms blown from the trees.

HURRY UP SUMMER. I like to watch every episode that Sir David Attenborough has made. Recently he was in a yellow deep sea submarine, the crew went very very deep into unchartered waters and came across a deep sea spider with 8 legs which floated and the two front ones were really quite long (no pic available) and were not unlike the stingers of the irrancangi jelly fish which is a very poisonous creature found in the tropical waters off of the Queensland and Darwin coasts. The sting of said jelly fish is excruciating, the use of vinegar relieves the sting a bit, but the victim must go straight to hospital as this

stage 1 ahead of the Centenary celebrations and it is looking great.

Council has prepared a site for a bench with superb views over the valley and landscaping rocks are being laid. Our group will continue to rehabilitate the

site but we have also applied for a grant through the State Government’s “Fund My Neighbourhood” scheme to create a rest spot half way along the Heritage trail. Our project would install a bench and/or table in an environmentally sensitive, landscaped setting with an

additional interpretive heritage plaque.

Applications have now closed and if we are successful in getting our application considered we will need locals to vote for it on the “Your Say SA” website. It requires registration but we are appealing for people to take the time and

sting affects the central nervous system and breathing.

Whilst working with the documentary crew from Oxford Scientific in Queensland I met a young man who told me he had left his boots outside the back door overnight. In the morning he picked them up and found he had left his socks in them so he plunged his hand in the get them out and grabbed a bird eating spider. It in turn bit him on his wrist and he became very ill, spending months in hospital and losing half of his body weight.

He is sickly looking and very pale and has to have his blood checked every three months.

PET SHOPS are selling these as pets., and kids lose interest in them and they are let lose outside, but they die down here in the southern states because it is too hot and dry.

Don't let them go, take them back to the pet shop.

Bugs n Slugs are dedicated to the conservation and promotion of invertebrate animals such as insects, spiders, lobsters, worms and snails.

Invertebrate animals – animals without backbones – make up 99% of animal diversity. Contrary to common belief, only very few are serious pests and diseases of humans, livestock and crops.

Indeed, the vast majority of invertebrate animals are absolutely vital to ecosystem health. They keep our rivers and oceans clean, our soils and crops productive and recycle organic waste.

In short, without invertebrate animals our world would be an inhospitable

place. Motivated by this, Bugs n Slugs foster the appreciation of invertebrate biology, diversity, form, function and unique beauty.

On November 8th we will be holding Yacca Lilla at Ingallala Falls where we will be bird watching and on December 6th it is down the beach to do some detective work.

Hemp is a more viable crop than cotton growing in poor soils, needing much less water and chemical controls. Every bit of this ancient plant is useful and valuable, and not just for rope, but for textiles, auto parts, cosmetics, dynamite, supplements, food, and medicine. In ancient China, hemp seed was regarded as food for the lower classes, and in Europe, a peanut butter-like spread was made from the seeds, in both cases with the hulls intact.

Hooded Plovers Are Back

O

ur favourite little beach nesting bird, the Hooded Plover have arrived back to their nesting sites on our local beaches in the last month. Already the Normanville South pair have a nest with 3 eggs, this has been fenced and signs erected so please when you see the signs keep a good distance from the fence and put your dogs on the leash.

The signs and fences are a valuable tool for protecting the birds. Most beach goers do not mean harm to beach nesting birds and generally only need to be made aware of possible impacts they might have. BirdLife Australia research shows that when highly threatened nest sites are signed or fenced off, the Hoodies have a much greater chance of raising their young (the equivalent to Hoodies living on isolated beaches).

Last season 16 fledglings were reported on the Fleurieu, however most of these were on the South Coast. It would be great if we could help these venerable birds breed successfully on our local beaches this season.

The Yankalilla Council have changed some of their dog controls on local beaches. In daylight saving hours dogs have to be on the leash from 10am–6pm on all beaches with the exception of Shelly Beach and Lands’ End which are dog free beaches. Weed of the Month from Cape Jervis Coastal Community Group Common Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris)

This groundsel grows to about knee high, with clusters of flower heads at the end of the stems. The individual flowers are only about 1cm long, and don’t seem to open properly, probably because of all those bracts surrounding the petals!

Only a millimetre or two of the yellow petals show at the top. There are 15 bracts or more, each tipped with black as can be seen in the photo. There are also lots of little bracts at the base of the flower head, again edged in black.

Eventually the flower head produces a fluffy white ball, with the seed on the inside of the ball, waiting to be blown away like dandelion seed. Although this weed is found along our coastlines and in our national parks, it is more common in urban areas, or disturbed sites.

Following significant inquiries from patients at the Southern Fleurieu Family Practice it is appropriate I confirm the current position regarding this matter and impact on the after-hours service.

Federal and State Funding withdrawn I can confirm the Practice has had funding support: withdrawn by the State Government in December 2013 which was used to provide an overnight Doctor on call service to the region and the emergency services at the Practice usually without charge for any consumables modified by the Federal Government from July 2015. This funding was used to subsidise staff wage costs for the afterhours service Monday–Friday between 6pm-8pm, Saturday afternoons, and all day Sunday and public holidays.

Impact on Patient Services This funding withdrawal has affected our patient services as follows: The 24/7 medical service ceased in December 2014 when state funding was withdrawn. The Practice made multiple efforts to have this funding restored without success. It means patients with serious and life threatening conditions are now required to seek emergency treatment at the nearest public hospital, often requiring an ambulance transfer. To avoid the ambulance cost we have strongly supported residents taking out Ambulance insurance. The Practice now charges patients for consumables used in all treatments. Every effort was made to delay the level and imposition of this charge however to sustain the service to the community when funding was removed we needed to impose a charge on those patients using the service. After-hours medical appointments, particularly on Sundays and Public Holidays have been disrupted. Where there have been no or minimal bookings some services have been withdrawn as it is not sustainable to maintain the practice hours without support funding. Sunday and Public holiday services will remain under constant review and may be withdrawn without notice when little demand exists. This means patients who seek medical treatment at these times will need to postpone treatment and care or seek it at the nearest medical outlet. This again involves travel and cost and loses the continuity of care which we strongly support.

What have we done We have tirelessly for the past 2.5 years made approaches to recognise the unique circumstances which exist in the Fleurieu Peninsula which warrant ongoing funding to maintain and provide the medical services the community (and its many visitor’s) deserve. I thank the Hon Rebekha Sharkie who has supported our efforts to restore reasonable funding support for this service.

However, it is disappointing: The federal government Minister has hidden behind the Practice Incentive Program as an excuse to not restore after hours funding. While we receive a small incentive which covers no more than 10% of the true cost, the Minister and the Department have not accepted the PIP does not cover every situation across Australia. Minister Hunt says PIP is intended to be the ‘main’ funding. Perhaps he should allow the Department or his operational network the Country health PHN consider the merits of providing this community with a medical service. The Country SA PHN has elected not to support the

Long distance driving will put EVs in the hands of them and we should take steps to avoid the monopoly situation happening again.

Fortunately there are some conditions available to EV motorist’s to take charge of their own power supply close to home that were not readily available when petrol was required.

Solar obviously is at the forefront [mentioned previously] but even with a battery storage back up we don’t always have enough sunshine available to make the electricity required for our needs. We could have a generator on hand for emergencies [power failures at night and cloudy days]. Unfortunately you will also need fossil fuel to run it but it is only a short term requirement and I have a feeling there are other ways to take charge of these emergency’s just around the corner. I like the idea of a pedal powered generator, exercise while you charge a battery. Every little bit helps. Tongue in cheek [maybe].

OK so a lot of panels required for a full charge of these EVs each day and if you need it all for your daily travel requirement the investment may look big. An average EV will do say 200k [it will get better, some claim 300 right now] on a full charge and if you look at the petrol required to travel the same distance you get an idea of the costs involved. 200 @ say 7 litres per 100 kilometres @ $1.30 per ltr [it will get worse] is in round figures, $18.Thats conservative as the 7 ltr per 100k is a bit of a dream for most of us [big cars]. 365 days, less 10% for non use is around 328 x $18 saving about $5,900 a year. You will have to invest more than this which could take a few years to get back but things are changing fast and another crystal ball would be handy right now..

Solar panels on the car needs an approach that people are working on and will have a great affect if they can achieve the results they are targeting, every little bit counts [solar power collecting glass amongst other things?]. This will in turn have a dramatic effect on our solar energy gathering at home. Things will get better.

All these are possible ways of holding back the monopoly situation from happening again.

Autonomous is a word that comes to mind and the politicians should take heed of this and support their constituents in their quest to take a stab at cleaning up the part of the environment we have neglected over the years.

New ways of thinking are required and it would be great to see new viable approaches to give our world a chance to survive in a better condition for our grandchildren and their grandchildren.

In fact, they warranted ongoing support for 2015/16 and then pulled it, allegedly due to Department of Health direction. Who can you believe? The State Government has failed to intervene and support this region. At the recent Community Cabinet event held at the Yankalilla Football Club a direct approach was made to Premier Weatherill and Minister Bignell who both claimed the region required important infrastructure and services with the growth of the tourism and wine industry. Despite a number of direct email communications to Minister Bignell’s office there has been no reply.

What is needed This community deserves a 7 day a week medical service which can provide appointment services across the hours of 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 9am–5pm every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday. Funding support to sustain wage costs and operating costs would facilitate this. We have consistently demonstrated the cost benefit analysis shows this service to be a much more effective use of taxpayers funds than the costs incurred through hospital transfer, Emergency Department attendance and overnight hospitalisation.

What you can do The Practice proposes to commence a formal petition for patients to sign. In the meantime, any concerned resident should also make their concerns known directly to: Minister Greg Hunt Premier Jay Weatherill Minister Peter Malinauskas Minister Leon Bignell (GPO Box 1671, Adelaide SA 5001) Should you contact them directly feel free to mention the following points: SFFP is the only medical facility on the west coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The nearest public casualty area is at Victor Harbor or Noarlunga, and further afield Flinders Public. All take time, use hazardous roads and require personal transport (there is NO public transport) or travel in a costly ambulance ride. The Practice caters for a usual population of 4,500 which can increase to 16,000 in summer vacation and other holiday periods; that is the afterhours service periods. It was providing 24/7 access to medical services with the financial support from the State Government (for overnight and emergency care) and the Federal Government for afterhours services (6-8pm Mon to Fri; Sat afternoon and Sunday and Public Holidays). Overnight services ceased in Dec 2014 when the State Government withdrew finance support to pay doctors an on call fee. Patients now needing emergency care are required to travel to either of the above casualty facilities. After hours services have now been disrupted following the withdrawal of funding support Despite prior assurances Country SA PHN have withdrawn funding (allegedly due to the Department of Health) from 1/7/2016. The Practice delivered over 2000 services to patients during afterhours on Saturday afternoons and Sundays who will need to move to other regions for this treatment if the Practice is closed. The range of presentations during after-hours in the past 12 months has included acute child asthma, Anaphylaxis, Blocked airways, Cardiac/chest pain, Burns. Gallstones, Pain management, Dehydration, jellyfish stings and Mental health Funding to retain this service would be highly cost effective when compared with the health system costs of ambulance transfer, ED time and overnight hospitalisation What will we do You can be assured this Practice will make every effort to sustain our current after-hours service.

Wirrina Bluegrass Festival

n the first weekend of Spring, for the last 6 years, a tiny festival is held at the Wirrina Camping Ground. It’s run on a shoestring budget and certainly does not break any box office records but the Wirrina Bluegrass and Acoustic Roots Festival brings together audience and performers from all over the country.

It is an amalgam of musical styles, centering around Bluegrass – “folk music with overdrive” – played (mainly) with guitar, mandolin, fiddle, double bass, 5 string banjo and Dobro guitar.

To see a top notch band play the Bluegrass classics is a joy. To see great players jamming before or after their concert gigs is something else again. There’s an intimacy with the audience that you don’t encounter at a straight up concert.

Despite rain and wind, the spirits of those playing and listening were not dampened and this year’s event was one of the best yet. There were many highlights over the weekend, too many to list, but for me ‘Swing 51’ (a David Grisman Quintet tune) performed by Andrew Clermont and the coalition of players known as the Supper Club was outstanding.

A BIG thank you to the volunteers who, with minimum fuss, made the Festival a success. Friendly and unflappable, who could ask for more.

Southern Fleurieu Family Practice Dr Lyn Gardiner – 42 Years Service to Rural South Australia

ne of Yankalilla’s most respected O doctor’s has decided to retire after 42 years as a rural General Practitioner.

Dr Lyn Gardiner established the first medical practice in Yankalilla, and spent 30 years working in it as a solo GP, before expanding the practice.

The Southern Fleurieu Family Practice will miss him as will his many patients.

Practice Manager, Sasha Godrich says Dr Gardiner is deeply respected.

“He is highly regarded by his colleagues but also by the community,” she said.

Dr Gardiner graduated from Adelaide University in 1968, and completed his Resident Medical Officer year at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital before spending five years with the Royal Australian Airforce as a medical officer.

“The last three of those years were spent in Western Australia and we returned to SA with two daughters,” said Dr Gardiner.

“After some revision and upskilling in obstetrics and paediatrics we searched for a rural practice not too far from Adelaide.”

Dr Gardiner developed a special interest in the ambulance service and its volunteers, after 12 road crash fatalities in his first 12 months at Yankalilla.

“My association with what was to become SAAS began as a support to our local volunteers, offering encouragement, assistance with training

and hands on help where and when required,” said Dr Gardiner.

“The development of a centralised career staffed ambulance service, the introduction of paramedics with advanced life-saving skills, aeromedical rescue and retrieval, and improved volunteer training has led to many lives saved that otherwise would have been lost.”

Dr Gardner was also involved with the establishment by Country Health South Australia of the Rural Emergency Responders Network, a group of specially trained rural GPs that attend out-of-hospital emergencies in partnership with SAAS and the MedSTAR retrieval service.

Ironically, Dr Gardiner required the assistance of these networks in January 2012 after he was paged to assist a crew at a tractor roll-over, two kilometres out of Yankalilla.

Dr Gardiner suffered a cardiac arrest at the scene. Fortunately, the medical retrieval service MedStar was already there.

“The good luck was being in the right place at the right time, with all the facilities already in train,” he said.

“Having handed the patient over to the retrieval team, I stood up, turned around and did a face plant with a VF arrest.

The CFS captain called in the event and began CPR. Defibrillation was successful.

“A second retrieval team had to be mobilised to manage the original casualty, during which interval I was

intubated and anaesthetised. Both helicopters flew us to Flinders Medical Centre in formation, which is definitely an uncommon sight.

“It was an unforgettable day and my deepest thanks go out to the members of our ambulance and emergency services who so capably adapted to the escalation of life threats on that day,” said Dr Gardiner.

He returned to work four months later, and he worked up until 14 September 2017, when retirement beckoned and was answered.

Now 74 years old, Dr Gardiner says he’s had a career full of highs and lows and that he has loved his time in Yankalilla.

“The community here is really strong and supportive of me and my practice.

I’ve always been made welcome,” said Dr Gardiner.

“We live in a 140 year old house which has been neglected. We’d like to correct that and of course we’ll do some travel.”

Dr Gardner says three of his four children live interstate, so there’ll be plenty of trips.

“We have ten grandchildren; it will be lovely to spend some quality time with them.”

He has been recognised by the Council of Ambulance Authorities and the Rural Emergency Responder Network and has received an RDWA service medal recognising his years of service.

ur members gathered on August 23rd at the Community Hall Yankalilla and after announcements and minutes were read, three birthdays were celebrated and Clare McCann received her 20 year pin. This was followed by morning tea.

Our guest speaker Dr Maureen Roberts introduced herself as being a Doctor of the soul from the Greek “psyche-iatros” .

We found her talk very thought provoking. Her opening sentence stunned us as she asked if any of us suffered from depression, bi-polar disorder, social anxiety, and addiction to the internet? In fact any or all of us could have up to six disorders. Are we all insane? In fact being a human could well be described as a disorder if we examine what is happening in our society and the world.

Dr Roberts particularly addressed the prescription of psychotic drugs which seem to be on the increase not only in Australia but worldwide.

Radical reforms to our way of life are needed if we are to be protected from taking drugs. Without being aware of the dangers many people are prescribed drugs without thorough investigation or medical evidence of mental illness. Beginning in early childhood medications may be prescribed for inattention and hyperactivity. These may alter the way the brain functions resulting in more serious negative behaviours. Reasons for hyperactivity need to be fully explored.

Under the huge umbrella of Medicare and bringing wealth to pharmaceutical companies many people are being prescribed psychotic drugs for conditions described as a chemical imbalance or mental disorder. Sadly the long term outcome of taking such drugs can be devastating causing permanent damage to brain function and resulting in negative outcomes for the patient and other members of the community.

We have become used to hearing that a person who has committed an offence has been given a light sentence or none at all due to mental illness. We tend to be accepting of such outcomes but is it right for a lawyer to make such a decision?

Where is the scientific evidence of mental illness? Psychiatrists are now being employed to provide support to offenders.

Does the public question enough the outcome of such court proceedings?

Years ago we did not have the range of psychotic drugs which are currently used.

Patients were described as having a mental breakdown or feeling sad and unhappy. Is it possible to return to a more simplistic way of helping people who are suffering such problems? By being ‘human’ and

relating to people in our community, supporting one another, providing help and listening to people. If we share life’s hurdles and support one another reform can come from the community. Taking a tablet and making pharmaceutical companies rich is not the answer.

We need to guard against labelling people as mentally sick and recognise the normal ups and downs of life which we all experience.

If we seek help from a professional person there is a high probability that they will prescribe a drug. There are many deaths each year in addition to life threatening disorders, blood clots and brain damage from neuroleptic drugs. Each year the statistics reveal that there are more drugs issued and an increase in disorders. The need for drugs is on the increase and we are seeing the evidence of that with our medical costs and need for more funding.

More people need to question their treatment particularly if the medication being taken could make changes to brain function which cannot be treated. When told that you have an incurable illness most people accept the treatment which is prescribed, however some drugs can cause imbalances in the brain which cannot be corrected.

Medical Practitioners invited to a conference in 2002 declined to attend. The topic was ‘Therapeutic Communities’, the move to de-institutionalise people, surround them with a protective environment and treat with kindness.

Doctor Roberts reported the conference

findings were that anti-psychotic drugs have little effect on long term psychiatric patients. She suggested modern treatment should provide empathy for people and human right advocates state that we have a right to refuse drugs.

“The value of a society is how well we look after our most vulnerable”.

Dr Roberts provided a most thought provoking talk and shared a lot of knowledge with us. Many thanks for her presentation, book references, pamphlets and DVD’s which she shared.

he name “Heritage Fleurieu Coast” was chosen intentionally as “Heritage” is a broader term than “History”. Our heritage includes not only built heritage, as in old houses, churches, etc, but also our beautiful natural heritage – our coast line and beaches, our rivers and waterfalls, and green rolling hills. If you have an idea for the inaugural Heritage Fleurieu Coast festival which would celebrate our natural heritage, please contact one of our committee members and let us know of your idea.

Local groups are gradually telling us about their intended events, and from what we are hearing, it should be a very interesting and busy time next May. We

are intending to do some preliminary promotion of the festival during the Christmas holiday period, when our region hosts many visitors. It is for this reason that we are asking people to give us early notice of their proposed event – i.e. before the end of October. Grants to help launch your environmental ideas pplications are now open for grants of A up to $5000 each for projects that protect and enhance our environment.

The Community Natural Resources Management (NRM) Action Grants are awarded annually by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board.

The grants are open to any community group, small business, non-government organisation or individual in the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges region.

Andrew Raymond from Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges said the grants could be used to fund on-ground works or activities that build community capacity, such as training or knowledge sharing.

“Last year’s grants helped with some great projects including restoring habitat for threatened species, producing a fungi field guide, trialling new ways to control weeds, and running cultural learning workshops,” Mr Raymond said.

“It’s great to see so many local groups making a real difference by working to safeguard and restore our local environment. The Community NRM Action Grants are helping support their efforts.”

Grant recipients last year included the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market, where sustainable living information sessions on topics such as worm farming and growing vegetables are just one example of how a group used a grant to educate the community and lead positive change.

A grant to the Friends of Black Hill and Morialta helped with the purchase of a remote camera which was used to confirm that southern brown bandicoots are living in Morialta Conservation Park. It was the first time the endangered marsupial had been seen in the park for a decade.

The Friends also employed contractors to tackle weeds that require specialised

control techniques, and to improve the biodiversity of popular rock climbing areas in Morialta.

t was with great pleasure that the Yankalilla Lions Club welcomed their Dinner Night guest speakers’ Tony & Corinne Harding. This enterprising couple built up their business of producing sheep cheeses over six years, from scratch. ‘Seavewe Artisan Sheep Dairy and Cheese was inspired by a family holiday in 2009 with friends in Switzerland who ran an interesting Sheep Cheese business.

Tony, previously in the automotive industry and Corinne, a nurse, ,met in Alice Springs but moved back to Normanville, purchased some sheep and proceeded to hand build all the dairy facilities they required to begin their cheese making business. A huge challenge and hard work. They are currently milking nearly forty ewes which are a mixture of East Fresians, Poll Dorset and crossbreds and are producing three mouth watering cheeses. Pastures Newe - a sheep feta, Shearer’s Delight – a camembert style and Shearer’s Bluey – a blue style.

Little sailing ships… underpinning early settlement

he officers of the South Australian Company, who set up an establishment on Kangaroo Island from July and August 1836, arrived from England in nine sailing ships, ranging from the relatively small schooner John Pirie of 105 tons to the larger HMS Buffalo of 850 tons.

Also, from the time of their first arrival, there was an urgent need of a smaller vessel, such as a cutter – a singlemasted decked vessel, accommodating and easily managed by two or three men – and several early colonists brought with them frames, timbers, spars, sails, anchors, and chains, etc., for construction into small craft in the new

colony. A considerable number of men skilled in boat and shipbuilding, and handling small craft, were sent out with the 236-ton barque South Australian.

Among them was experienced shipbuilder, Henry Mildred; Captain Joseph Wright, who had been a registered Channel pilot as superintendent of draught and seine fishery; John Germein as superintendent trawler and fisherman, his brothers Sam and Ben, aged 18 and 15 years respectively; Gilbert Hutchinson, harpooner; and Gregory Cummins, a ship’s caulker.

Some small boats were brought out from England, others were sourced from Tasmania and some were built from local timber. However, the majority of small ships used came from Tasmania, as they were built by skilled tradesmen from quality timber, including the cutter William which arrived in the colony in September 1836.

Before any jetties were built, ships had to anchor offshore and passengers and goods transferred to shore by a cutter, longboat, hatchboat or gig.

Colonel William Light first made landfall on the mainland of the new colony at Rapid Bay, named after the brig Rapid, on 8 September 1836, having proceeded up Gulf St Vincent from Kangaroo Island. A week after landing Light went north to what is now Second Valley and walked overland to Yankalilla. He wrote, ‘There is a beautiful stream of fresh water running into the sea.’ This is near the mouth of the Yankalilla River. He was a prolific painter and recorded many events in paintings. Assistant surveyor on the Rapid with Colonel Light, William Pullen, wrote in his diary for this day: ‘Before leaving [Kangaroo Island] the Colonel engaged a man by the name of Cooper & his family, a sealer & had been about 7 years on the Island he was to act as Pilot his wives (two native women) and Kangaroo dogs were to supply us with fresh meat. When all ready started for Gulf St Vincent the distance across from Nepean Bay to Cape Jervis the East pt of the Gulf being about 25 miles we reached it that evening. Many & various were the opinions given on the near approach to the land, it was indeed beautiful presenting more the appearance of a park than land that had been for centuries trodden by uncultivated savages. How anxious were we to get on shore, no sooner was the anchor down & sails furled than off we started appearances had not indeed deceived us we were delighted & many castles built

and conjectures on prosperity likely to arise out of such a scene as was presented to us. Nothing but luxuriant foliage & oh! a thick sward of many and various flowers what was to expected from the act of man when such was the state of the place while in a Nature’s garden. Cooper was sent off with his women to bring in the tribe of the place while we were busily employed getting tents & provisions on shore for the Colonel & surveying party it being the intention to remain here a few days. A garden was made & stocked with seeds we had brought with us The Bay and valley examined to satisfaction & named after the brig being the first vessel ever having anchored there.’

Colonel Light’s Journal recording his survey work along our coasts in the later months of 1836, and before the arrival of the Buffalo, wrote that the brig Rapid’s longboat and hatchboat were used for sending messages to the other ships and that Mr. Pullen sailed in over the bar at the entrance of the Port Creek in the hatchboat and proceeded a distance of nearly 15 miles; and also that men were sent from the Rapid, at Rapid Bay, in the hatchboat to the barque Cygnet at Holdfast Bay. Mr Pullen was the first to navigate the Port Creek, when he went in the hatchboat as far as its depth permitted and then continued in the ship’s gig up to the Old Port. Colonel Light on the Rapid outside the river was most likely watching from the masthead the progress of the little ship, revealed by the occasional appearance of its sails over the mangroves beyond the sandhills of Lefevre’s Peninsula.

It wasn’t long before there were numerous small ships plying the coast between the port of Adelaide and the settlements becoming established along the coast of Gulf St Vincent at Aldinga, Rapid Bay, Yankalilla and Normanville, as well as to Kangaroo Island.

Dr John Woodforde at the surveyors’ camp at Rapid Bay recorded in his diary on 4 December 1836: ‘A sailing cutter anchored at the camp and disposed of 11/2 tons of potatoes and cheese and muttonbird eggs.’

But these trips in such small craft required courageous and resourceful mariners, and were not without difficulties. There were often mishaps, and many boats were wrecked along the coast in heavy seas and bad weather.

The first recorded wreck in South Australian waters was the cutter from HMS Investigator, commanded by Captain Matthew Flinders. Having

reached the entrance of what would later be called Spencer Gulf on 21 February 1802, the ship's cutter under command of the master John Thistle and with midshipman William Taylor and six sailors crossed to the nearby coast to search for water. The cutter was overturned and destroyed by a strong tide and all men were lost. Little wreckage and no bodies were found despite an extensive search. Flinders named adjacent islands after all of the men lost. The point of land nearest the disaster was called Cape Catastrophe.

Severe storms in Encounter Bay in December 1837 destroyed two ships. On 8 December, the South Australian Company's ship South Australian, anchored in Rosetta Harbour having been modified for whaling, was blown from her moorings and onto a reef.

Crew and passengers escaped but the vessel was destroyed. Solway anchored near the site of the South Australian wreck later in December and was similarly destroyed in another storm, again with no loss of life. John Pirie was also driven onto the same reef, but was successfully re-floated.

On 29 March 1838, the wooden brig Dart grounded on Troubridge Shoal at the entrance of St Vincent Gulf, and became a total wreck, but there was no loss of life. The barque Parsee was also wrecked on Troubridge Shoal, on 17 November that year, but crew and passengers reached safety, although the ship and most of the cargo was lost. The cutter William was driven ashore in Yankalilla Bay in September that year and wrecked.

The brig David Whitton went ashore south of the entrance to the Onkaparinga River during a storm on 17 March 1839.

The crew and some cargo were saved, but the ship was a total loss.

The cutter Francis, built at Encounter Bay by William Paterson, was sailed on a sealing trip by its owner in August 1840 and was wrecked on Neptune Island, where it is believed that the crew subsisted on penguins for 50 days.

Despairing of ever being rescued two of the crew set out in the cutter’s dinghy for Port Lincoln, 50 miles away, where they arrived safely, and a longboat then sent to rescue the remaining crew. Many others weren’t so lucky.

Yankalilla and the Historic Connection to Saint Mary of the Cross-MacKillop October 1867- The First Josephite Rural Convent and School Opened.

2017 - 150 Years

T

he Story of Mary Helen MacKillop and the teaching Institute of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Cross that she co-founded with Father Julien Tension Woods in Adelaide in 1867 is well documented. However not well recognised is the historic significance of Yankalilla in her vision to provide educational opportunities to children of underprivileged circumstances.

In October 1857, the first rural Josephite convent and school was opened in Yankalilla. This was the first experiment of opening a Josephite Catholic School in a remote district where the Catholics are scattered and the Priest resident at some distance.

Examples of CWA members handicrafts, including needlework, knitting and card making created over the years will be exhibited and some members will use the day to demonstrate their crafts.

Light refreshments will be available all day at a cost but there will be no admission fee.

The SACWA Café at the Royal Show was kept busy with plenty of customers even though the weather was wet and cold. The 2 volunteers who went for a day thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In 1874, the convent and the school closed. This was not in any way a sign of failure of the venture, but was a consequence of the events of the times, which saw a significant population movement away from the district.

In 2010, a plaque was installed outside the house, (now privately owned), to commemorate the MacKillop School House and the two Nuns, Sister Clare

October 17th 2010 Blessed Mary MacKillop was canonised a Saint by Pope Benedict XV1.

Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, is Australia’s first Saint and is very much part of the Yankalilla District’s history and Australia’s history.

The Yankalilla region in October 2017 can celebrate 150 years of the unique role that her Convent and School here played as both the ‘First’ rural Josephite Convent and School, but also in Australia and the World.
