I

t is nice to know that within a community such as ours, there is always someone who is able to help.

Just recently, the Intervention and Support Coordinator for the Yankalilla Area School, Kelly Caire, was looking for assistance in putting together some capes for primary aged children at the school.

And so the Inman Quilters got together for a “working bee” and within no time at all, had put together twelve of the capes.

60th Anniversary

C

ongratulations to Fritz and Sonja Zwik who celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on 10th September. Guests were treated to great German Cuisine.

These bright and cheerful capes are for children to wear as a reward when they do good/excellent work with Spelling and Maths and to encourage them to continue their hard work. The wearing of the cape identifies the child as a ‘SUPER SPELLER’ or a ‘MATHS MARVEL’. And the bright colors ensure that the capes are noticed by others!!!

Kelly and the principal Christine Bell were very impressed with the capes and grateful for the contribution from the Inman Quilters.

Editor’s Comments

ello Readers, October is here! The Yankalilla Show, long weekend, sunshine (or not) and a sudden change of pace as we realise summer is on the way.

Certainly the level of activity has increased a few notches since last month.

There was even a jump in the number submissions to the good ol’ Yank News, which is back up to 40 pages this time and likely to increase further in the Christmas lead up. A good reason to submit your stuff as early as possible to avoid the rush around the deadline date.

The Yankalilla Council have been a bit creative and have totally re-vamped their ‘In The Loop” section. It’s still in the middle as usual and feel free to provide feedback to the Council on their efforts.

The Yankalilla Community Children's Centre are raising funds and are holding a quiz night. Get your table together for a fun night with a good cause. See page 11.

It has been a few years since the area had a Laundromat but now we do again! Not only that, but there is a dog wash too. Kaye Fox has expanded her Yankalilla Car Wash to include these new facilities. There are some details on page 32.

Plenty for history enthusiasts to get involved in this month. The Yankalilla Museum is seeking old photos of Normanville and the Heritage

Fleurieu Coast Festival is getting organised. See page 16-17 and there is also the regular dose of local history from the Historical Society.

Other updates in this issue include the Festival Fleurieu 2017, Sealand Theatre, Books & Words Group, Yankalilla Area School and many more.

As usual there is a bunch of activities and entertainment from Club Fleurieu and the Normanville Natural Resource Centre.

That should keep everyone busy for a while.

ocals Roger King and Mike Taylor embark on their second Black Dog Ride on October 22 for 7 days.

This years ride starts in Sedan and takes them to Pt Augusta via Pt Lincoln and Ceduna and a whole lot of towns in between, some 1700kms. Bike riders from all parts of South Australia take part in this annual event raising awareness of depression and suicide prevention. The boys had two very successful sausage sizzles outside Wakefield Grange Butchery on the

weekend of 27/28th August and will have a stall at this years Yankalilla Show promoting the ride with information about the organisation. eminder: if you intend to grow petunias for the Christmas Floral display, you need to purchase your petunia seedlings this month. If you don’t wish to grow seedlings, you can simply purchase a pot of red or white petunias in December and place them in the display.

As well as the petunias we will have a Christmas tree, and as an alternative to (or in addition to) donating petunias you

Club Fleurieu The Growth and Use of Herbs

t 1pm Wednesday 26th October Sandra Stuart, President of The Herb Society of South Australia will be visiting the club to talk about the work of her society and the growth, history and use of herbs.

Along with her illustrated talk she will be bringing herb and salvia cuttings and leaflets and books for sale. She will also have a selection of plants for sale. All welcome to come along and listen to what Sandra has to tell us and stay for afternoon tea and enjoy a chat with other herb enthusiasts.

lub Fleurieu held their AGM on 31st August and the following people were elected. Malcolm Schlein, President, Louise Allstrom Vice President, Irene Sanderson, Secretary, Bjorn Nilsson Treasurer.

The Committee is made up of Vicky Morecroft, Rita Seabrooke, Jean Collins, Patricia Schlein, Hillary Ossitt, Greta Schutter and George Adler. The first committee meeting went well with some exciting ideas discussed and there is great support and interest for the Planning Day later in the month when last year’s achievements are reviewed and plans are put in place for next year. Look forward to some exciting activities and events!

Chairperson’s report FOR AGM September 2016

E

xiting Chairperson, Lorraine Mcloughlin reported on the events of the past twelve months including a rowdy literary quiz following the 2015 AGM at the Courthouse Café; a session about making our own books in October 2016, run by Joy Whellum with assistance from Lorraine Mcloughlin resulted in several participants producing fine books as Christmas and family presents, and records of overseas holidays; a talk by popular novelist Fiona McIntosh at the Normanville Hotel in November appealed particularly to those interested in romance and chick lit; a great start to 2016 in January, when John Murray packed people into the SLSC to hear about his crime writing based on his true experiences as a detective and commissioner of police; two book club dinners over fine food at Lilla’s café discussing Ian McEwan’s novel The Children Act in February, and in August Tim Winton’s novel, Dirt Music. two theatre productions by Upstage Theatre of Ned Kelly during History Month in May and Cinderella the pantomime in July using the stage at Club Fleurieu; And we had a session of Laughing out Loud over readings at Allusion Winery.

On behalf of BWG, Lorraine praised the local venues used for our events and the support of businesses working with the group on these occasions. She acknowledged the outstanding pro bono creative work of Alison Fort graphic designer and free promotional coverage by Yankalilla Regional News and Victor Harbor Times, and expressed gratitude for the support and efforts of staff and volunteers at Yankalilla Visitor

Christmas Event Watch for details in the November issue of the Yankalilla Regional News Information Centre whose goodwill and humour have also made a difference to the group, enabling smooth ticketing and promotion.

But above all she recognized that it’s the team of people on the committee who make events happen. She said, “I applaud and thank them all. I have enjoyed working with them as a great team, our loyal members, and the reading community over the last six years. It’s with reluctance that I step back from such heavy involvement in the running of the group. I am proud of what we have achieved together and the niche we have filled with things literary. May the fun and fellowship continue well into the future.”

YCCC Quiz night fundraiser

he Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre (YCCC) Governing Council is putting on a quiz night on Oct 22nd to raise funds for the

various programs the centre is involved with such as playgroup, families’ fitness, the healthy lunch box program (a 2017 program), preschool and child care.

The following are some of the programs the centre runs: Playgroup is held every Friday morning at 10am throughout the school term. It is aimed at young families from 0 to 5 years of age. Families come and interact with their children and partake in arts n’ crafts, story time and nature play.

Families Fitness is a fun, interactive and inclusive fitness program that runs on Monday mornings at 9:30am throughout the school term. The aim of this program is to promote an active lifestyle in a fun environment. Children are cared for in an open crèche environment where the children can see and access their parents at any given time throughout the session.

The aim for 2017 is to secure the funding to be able to introduce an interactive cooking session with children and their parents. This program will include cooking classes, recipes and lunch box ideas.

The funds raised from the upcoming Quiz night will be made available for the centre and its programs to assist in supporting new and existing programs. Tickets will be sold either individually at $10 or book a table of 10 for $90.

Fella’s Night

n Wednesday 31st August, the children from the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre invited their special “fella” to come to kindy and childcare.

Approximately 25 “fella’s” came along and enjoyed a fun night exploring our new “backyard” as well as some traditional activities inside. The evening also included a yummy sausage sizzle tea cooked by T’Leah and David and served by Mel, Sue, Diane, Tia and Sophie (YCCC staff). This was all washed down by a glass of ginger beer and followed by an ice-cream.

A big thankyou to the King family for the use of their lights and also to Derek and Andy for setting the lights up so that we could all enjoy a fantastic evening in our new “backyard”.

Yankalilla Ladies Probus General Meeting

hirty members attended on 24th August. The Probus Concept was read, followed by the minutes of the previous meeting. A new member Joylin Tiller was welcomed and presented with her membership pin. Four ladies received birthday cards and we welcomed one visitor. Betty Brockbank reported on a recent trip by twelve members to the Festival Theatre to see ‘The Sound of Music’ which was a great success. Future outings were discussed and details of the birthday celebration to be held in November.

After our morning tea we divided into groups to share stories around ‘Our favourite outfit’ or fashion accessory. It could be something worn in the past which holds a special memory or clothes we enjoy wearing today.

We divided into three groups and took it in turns to share an item of clothing which holds a special memory. Items ranged from a pair of diamond earrings, a scarf made from alpaca wool to a stunning colourful jacket which had been a gift from a husband and been worn for many special occasions. There was a blue dress made for that first dance and an outfit

made from curtain material found at a car boot sale, a tartan kilt, and a dress worn for a wedding to mention just some of the items.

The ingenuity of our members came to the fore and it was so interesting to hear the stories connected with their favourite garment. One lady showed us a kilt bought in Scotland many years ago of a particular tartan which held memories of a lovely holiday in the British Isles and a boat trip back. Another lady still had the dress made by her when she was 16 for her first dance. Those who could no longer fit into their dresses brought them on hangers or had a photograph of them wearing the outfit. Amazingly some of the clothes were still fashionable and in good condition. Credit to those ladies who take good care of their precious clothes.

It was an enjoyable morning and a great way to learn more about our members. Thank you to all who participated.

Our meeting on 28th September featured Paul Frost giving a talk with a power point presentation about bee keeping. We’ll report next issue on hearing all about how to keep bees! Visitors always welcome.

pring is nature’s way of saying “ Lets party” said the wonderful Robin Williams. Members were in a jovial spring mood at our September meeting.

To open the meeting Tim McCumiskey read a sonnet he had composed about the trials he experienced when his bush retreat was cut off by flood waters. Not a bard effort!

We also must mention the public spirited effort by Geoff Bowyer who again sold daffodils at the shops to raise funds for the Cancer Council. This year he raised $1465.

Instead of having a guest speaker we opted to visit the Yankalilla Mens Shed. There are now over a thousand similar sheds in operation around Australia.

We thank Phil and George for taking the time to update us on progress. So far they have installed the shed lining, insulation and shelving. In coming months they will connect and cage the woodworking and other machinery. As well as a place for men to work on

mong the early colonists to arrive in this district in the 1850s were those from Ireland. John Clarke arrived from Killarney on board the “Tam-o’-Shanter on 27th November, 1836. Settling at Wattle Flat he married Catherine Taggart (from Cork, Ireland) in 1840. They lived at Wattle Flat for the rest of their lives, and had seven sons and four daughters. A well educated man, he was the first Justice of the Peace in the district and became a member of the District Council.

The first settler to take up land in Yankalilla was Henry Kemmis, in 1842. Born in Ireland of landed gentry he arrived in South Australia with his wife and children in 1839 and eventually lived at Manna Farm.

Colourful people, the Irish were hardworking and at times pious and humble, then gay with rollicking good humour. Paddy Lawless and his family, of Second Valley, rode to Sunday Mass on horseback, the horse refusing to budge when overloaded with the older children who were supposed to walk. Many families walked the ten miles from beyond Second Valley and Wattle Flat, young parents carrying their toddlers on their backs there and back.

Many Irish women were among the single females brought out by the shipload to relieve the overcrowded

orphanages and work-houses in the wake of the famine. These girls were to work as domestics or on farms for the equivalent of 25c a week.

St. Patrick’s Day , which falls on the 17th of March, was a time of great jubilation. A grand sports meeting was organised, the whole town invited. There were foot races and horse races. Rafferty’s rules were the order of the day. The big marquee was erected just north of Fergusson’s Mill. There would be buckets of hot mashed potatoes, vegetables and meats and salads, and a copper full of hot plum puddings. At night there was the grand St. Patrick’s Ball.

Everyone would be “a’wearing of the green”, singing the old Irish songs and some of them dancing all night.

In 1867 the first Catholic Country School was established by Sister Mary McKillop in Yankalilla, with forty children attending. The Sisters lived in a rented house using some of the rooms as classrooms.

John Clark’s four daughters were accomplished pianists and skilled embroiderers, having been taught by the Sisters. John had not wanted his daughters doing menial tasks so he employed two Irish girls as servants.

As it turned out his daughters had to work as hard as any farmer’s wife when they married, and the servant girls married his two sons.

School attendance was irregular for the first generation of children, family survival being the first consideration to produce the necessities of life the children had to do their bit. Boys learned to tend the stock, milk cows, hoe vegetables, chop wood, and help plough the land. Girls cared for younger brothers and sisters, milked cows, learnt to make butter, and helped in the home. Most children, and some teachers, walked to school, some as far as five miles each way.

The paths the first children trod often became the district roads.

On Wednesday mornings a member of this society will be in attendance at the Yankalilla Library between 10am and noon. id you know? Last month marked the 180th anniversary of Col Light’s landing at Rapid Bay on September 8, 1836. To acknowledge this the Yankalilla and District Historical Society and the Yankalilla Library held a talk at the library on Col Light’s time in the Yankalilla district.

The talk was attended by a small but appreciative audience.

As reported in last month’s Yankalilla News the committee of “Heritage Fleurieu Coast” are starting to plan for an inaugural local heritage festival in 2018, as part of the State History Festival. Although this festival will be biennial, it does not mean that groups cannot enter an event in the State’s History Festival during the odd years, and, in fact, now is the time to start thinking about how we can celebrate our heritage during 2017 History Festival.

The committee hopes to assist groups intending to register an event with the 2017 SA History Festival, by drawing up a list of proposed events well in advance of the deadline for registration, to help with co-ordination and prevent

clashes. In order to do this, we ask you to fill out an “Intention to Register’’ form, giving a brief outline of the type of event and the proposed date. This form can be picked up from the Visitor Information Centre, or you can request the form to be emailed to you, by emailing Lance Hocking: lancehocking@outlook.com. I need to stress that filling out this form will not mean that you are registering an event in the state history festival – you will still need to register with the SA History Festival – but it will enable you to check that your event does not clash or duplicate other groups’ events. The form should be returned to the Visitor Information Centre or emailed to Lance by 19 November.

Early Detection Is Saving Lives

N

ew data released during September has shown that the mortality rate from some of South Australia’s most common cancers, including colon, lung and prostate cancer, is declining.

Senior Medical Oncologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital Cancer Centre Professor Dorothy Keefe said that the Cancer in South Australia 2013 report highlights that the rates of colon cancer and lung cancer in both men and women, as well as prostate cancer in men, are reducing.

“Early detection tests that can identify cancer at an early stage, as well as advancements in treatments, are contributing to the reduced mortality rates,” Professor Keefe said.

“The report demonstrates that many South Australians are taking heed of the messages that early detection can greatly increase the chance of successful treatment for some of our most common cancers.

“The report also shows early signs of a decline in newly diagnosed lung cancer cases in women for the first time in over 30 years, indicating that initiatives to reduce smoking in South Australia are working.

“It is encouraging that many of our targeted campaigns to reduce common cancers are having a positive effect.”

The Cancer in South Australia reports are released annually to describe trends in cancer, as well as project incidence and mortality rates into the future.

While the 2013 report shows that mortality rates of some of South Australia’s most common cancers declined, there were a total of 22 more deaths from cancer in 2013 than in 2012.

In 2013 more South Australians were also diagnosed with cancer, with figures increasing from 9,486 diagnoses in 2012 up to 9,717 in 2013.

“The reports give us a good indication of the impact cancer is having on the lives of South

Australians,” Professor Keefe said.

“As the population ages we are detecting more incidences of cancer and while sixty per cent of cancer in 2013 affected those aged 65 and over, the report is a good reminder to all South Australians that they should not be complacent towards cancer.

“Cancer often has no specific symptoms so it is important to limit risk factors and utilise appropriate screening programs.

“Measures like not smoking, avoiding the sun and keeping healthy can assist in cancer prevention, while utilising screening programs can improve early detection and survival rates.”

The South Australian Cancer Registry has been collecting data since 1977 to evaluate the impact of testing and screening programs, as well as to enable research into cancer risk factors, unusual trends in cancer diagnoses and exceptional cancer risks.

he Club had two teams in the Grand Final and our 13 and under Division 2 team were winners on the day. It was a draw with Goolwa at full time and they had to play another 10 minutes and ended up winning by 3 goals!.

Congratulations girls and also their Coach Sarah.

The Senior 7 team worked their way up from 4th to playing in the Grand Final, however, McLaren Vale were too strong. Well done to all the ladies in that team and to Coach Jackie and Team Manager Shirley.

At Association level, we had two of our Junior girls from the 13 and Under Division 1 team, Ella Riley and Matilda Baxter, tie for Best and Fairest. Well done Girls!

In Seniors, Bernie Golder was Runner up for the Association Best and Fairest in the Senior 3 team!

Two of our Senior players received Player Life membership of the Association for playing 300 Senior games. Cathy Tozer has played at 4 clubs across the Association and is now a goalie for our Senior 7 team and has played 355 games!! Claire Ellis who has played all her netball at Yankalilla and started playing Seniors at the age of 14 has reached 327 games and is a defence player in our Senior 3 team. What a great record for both of these ladies!

Tania Baldock was awarded the Umpire of the Year award for her efforts at Club and Association level and for mentoring younger umpires.

At Club level, Claire Ellis played her 350th game for the club a few weeks ago. Susan Bishop received the Volunteer of the Year award for the Yankalilla Netball Club for her input as Umpire Coordinator. The Jodie Scheer Trophy was awarded to Amelia Maidment for her efforts in her first year playing in Seniors as well as for helping with umpiring.

Helen Maidment received the Joan Jennings Trophy for polling the most League votes for Yankalilla in the Association Best and Fairest. In Juniors, three girls from Yankalilla polled equal votes in the Association Best and Fairest in 2 different Divisions, so all three were awarded a Jill May Trophy. – Ella Riley, Matilda Baxter and Cheyenne Hawke.

Lookout on Reservoir Road A new picturesque public lookout could soon be a feature on Reservoir Road near Sellicks Hill with council investigating the viability of its installation.

Elected members will consider the proposed construction of a lookout within the 2017-18 Annual Business Plan process.

A Place to Reflect

Cemeteries require a place for quiet contemplation, to remember those who we love and honour the deceased. Now visitors to the Yankalilla Public Cemetery will have the opportunity to reflect in comfort following a sizeable donation from a local charity group.

The site dating back to the 1950’s will undergo a significant upgrade with the construction of a rotunda, near the columbarium wall.

This rotunda has been made possible by the Yankalilla Community Op-Shop which has given $10,000 to the project.

“Our volunteers, who are all locals, hear from the community about what things are needed and so we decided to donate this money to the council for the installation of a rotunda,” said Ann Hesse, Op-Shop Vice President.

“The position of the rotunda also has a nice view over the hills and will provide a shelter for visitors.”

The Op-Shop is a significant supporter of the local community, donating all of its profits to our sporting clubs, schools and the museum.

“We’re delighted by this very generous donation which will enable the installation of a purpose-built permanent rotunda,” said Council CEO Nigel Morris.

“We’re aiming to have the feature completed by the end of the year.”

Spring has sprung, heralding an ambitious round of roadworks right across the district.

Over the coming months, 80 per cent of the district’s 450 kilometres of roads will be targeted for maintenance, such as grading and pothole repair following our wet Winter.

Unfortunately, damage to roads over the winter months is unavoidable.

When the ground gets wet and the water comes up underneath the road, it causes damage and wear to the road surfaces.

Ours is certainly an ambitious plan. In fine weather, three teams plus a contractor will work six days a week to get the job done.

They will target five kilometres a day.

We kindly ask locals and visitors to please bear with us as we work to deliver you beautiful roads.

NORMANVILLE BEACH ACCESS Council will conduct a round table discussion on the ability to launch boats from Normanville Beach. Last year this was accommodated using Beach Access Plastic Mats, however Council is looking for a long-term solution which has been made more difficult this year with the Bungala River changing direction and now cutting through the beach. ROBERT NORMAN It’s a story that’s got a bit of everything – cannons, prosthetic hands, the Governor and, of course, the Fleurieu Peninsula.

This story begins as all good stories do – a long, long time ago… It was 1844 when dental surgeon Robert Hasting Norman arrived in Adelaide with his wife, young son and mother and established the colony’s first dental practice in Wright Street in the CBD. A learned gentleman, Robert Norman also carved objects from ivory and bone, exploring mechanical applications with his craft. The then Governor George Grey was a fan of Dr Norman’s work and paid him to make a prosthetic hand for Corporal John Coles, who lost his four left fingers while preparing a cannon for a celebratory firing, in honour of the birth of the Duke of Cornwall.

The prosthetic hand was reported as being made from “sea-cow”, intricately carved to copy details of fingers and nails. Catgut pulleys were interlinked with small spools, carefully worked into the knuckle joints, and were manoeuvred by the thumb.

its working that Corporal Coles could pick up a button or a sixpence with pleasing facility’ (Health Museum of South Australia). 131 years later, Dr Norman’s creation continues to impress, inspiring production of the world’s first 3D-printed body-powered prosthetic hand in 2015, by US mechanical designer Ivan Owen.

Robert of course is better known to the District with his announcement in the Register Newspaper on 2nd June 1849 that he intended forming a township to be named “Normanville’ on his property on the Bungala River. For more history like this, please head to the Visitor Information Centre and Museum, open seven days a week.

NBN IMPROVING OUR CONNECTIVITY Residents and tourists alike are now experiencing the benefits of free Wi-Fi in the district, with the service being further rolled out in both Yankalilla and Normanville.

Building on the introduction of the NBN and the successful pilot in Normanville’s main street which has been up and running since June, the second stage of Council’s initiative, includes the Yankalilla shopping precinct in Main Street and Main South Road, as well as the Normanville foreshore and Jetty Caravan Park.

With free Wi-Fi available at many of the district’s most popular eateries and cafes, businesses are giving strong feedback about the success of the program. Business owners are reporting that people are staying longer, able to login and access social media and do their work.

Following this rollout, Council will look to Year Three of the plan for 2017-18 and consider additional options for extending the service elsewhere in the district.

The NBN has also gone live at Second Valley after overcoming some technical hurdles. The service is now officially up and running and residents can now contact their internet service provider to access higher speed internet.

T

he heading maybe a touch ambiguous, but all will be explained for clarity of meaning and context.

Over the previous months the citizens of our town have been enthralled with the busy, somewhat feverish work being carried out in the centre of town.

With only sketches of the proposed additions and beautifications, no-one has had any inkling as to the final picture.

However, as gradual various phases came into being, wonderment and intrigue commenced to rear its unique head.

As each facet commenced to appear, not the least the huge tropical palms, the pleasant Sunday strolls took on a new meaning and something worth walking the” detoured walk” down the main street.

Of course, the local residents, visitors were more or less all bemused, with conjectures of what all this embellishment depicted, with several wild suggestions.

The paving, the closed roads during peak hour, weekend visits to the main street, started to lose its attraction for most residents.

The people this annoyed and hurt most were the trade folk who relied on the custom from the passing (with a BIG ‘P’) being the operative word!

Gradually various aspects started to be added to the one corner intersection, i.e one that could only be described as an edifice!

Speculation was rife, was it a ship’s mast perhaps, including four spikes on each corner to signify the directions, ie north, south east and west?

The topmost box type structure some

suggested was a crow’s nest for the lookout perchance?

The popular opinion was that the ‘edifice’ was definitely significant with the olden whaling days, i.e. coinciding with the district’s whaling history.

Then, of course this presumption more or less confirmed with the erection of the ‘whale bone’ type lights on the intersection (6 of them), all this modernisation of the township being too much for the faint-hearted folk.

The Sunday strollers had gained one advantage since these interesting additions had been installed, they could now resume their dog walking without enduring the detours previously to what they had been subjected to on their Sundays.

Personally, I found the main street particularly inconvenient whilst ma n o e u v r i n g t h e s e so me t i me dangerous detours previously, now I have returned to my one destination I always head for whilst hubby takes the collie for his walk.

Twilight Golf 2016/17

he daylight saving season is approaching which means the Twilight Golf at Yankalilla will begin. The course is in excellent condition. The competition is a nine hole stableford played every Friday evening 3.30pm hit off. With sponsorship there are seven prizes each week. Starting date will be Friday 28th October 3.30pm.

Person’s interested are asked to be there to adjust or issue handicaps to new players. The Summer Cup competition will commence 4th November. The season will continue through Christmas and New Year with no breaks. Bar facilities are available for refreshments with an occasional BBQ on special days. Yankalilla and Districts Community Men’s Shed

B

y the time this article goes to print the wall lining and insulation will have been completed. It’s been a mammoth task that was completed by the guys at the shed. Some cut the timber and hung the sheets, while others made the coffee and had a chat. The great thing about the Yankalilla Men’s Shed is that there are no expectations, you can do as much or as little as you like. If you want to come and have a chat over a hot cuppa or use the tools to make something, that’s fine. It’s all about doing what you want in a social, relaxed environment.

The Shed welcomes new members each week and has seen many new friendships grow with a bunch of like

minded guys. We have a varied group of people with mixed working backgrounds ranging from bank managers and accountants to carpenters, electricians, farmers and everything in between with ages ranging from 29 to 90 years old.

The Yankalilla Probus Club recently came to the shed for a visit and a BBQ lunch. Sandy cooked the sausages and we all enjoyed lunch together.

adly, Yankalilla Area School is losing the services of their Pastoral Support Worker. Jacinta Baldwin and family are leaving to take up a new life in Tasmania in late August.

Jacinta has been a wonderful worker helping students, staff and parents. During her time at the school she has begun a number of new programs and gained the respect and trust of those around her. She has built positive relationships with the local churches. At a recent farewell morning tea Jacinta said that she appreciated very much the support of local churches and was sad to leave.

Jacinta was presented with a handcrafted bowl made by Mark Pearce and some other goodies as a token of our appreciation for her work at Yankalilla.

We are most fortunate to have a new Pastoral Support Worker in the wings, Amy Willcocks, who is ready to take up the reins for the rest of term 3 and all of term 4 this year. We welcome Amy to her new position.

A Water VACSWIM, South Australia’s largest and most iconic aquatic safety program with over 50 years of history, has opened for registrations with organisers encouraging all families to sign up early and save the date.

Over 13,000 primary school aged children are expected to take part at more than 130 pool and beach locations across metropolitan and regional South Australia, with the majority of locations offering VACSWIM from the 3rd - 11th January 2017 in line with the Christmas and New Year holiday break.

ankalilla now has a Laundromat and Dog Wash thanks to Kaye Fox who has expanded her premises behind the Yankalilla Car Wash at 71 Main Street Yankalilla.

The dog wash is very user friendly.

Your pet sits in an elevated 'tub' while you wash with warm water, selecting shampoo, conditioner. flea rinse or blow dry. Cost is $10 for 10 minutes and that includes shampoo etc. Washing your dog removes dirt, allergies, salt and anything else that causes smelly dogs.

Washing aids the shredding of any old hair. Open 8am to 6pm.

It has been a few years since we have had a local Laundromat but now we do, consisting of 6 gas dryers and seven washing machines. One washing machine is for pet rugs. Cost of washing machines are $5 for a double load machine up to $11 for a 4x (doona size) machine. Free detergent is pumped directly into these modern Dexter machines.

ongratulations NSLSC Surf Life Saver Cathy Smith who was recently awarded “The National Medal”. The award was established in 1975 by the Commonwealth of Australia recognising long service in organisations that protect life and property at some risk to their members.

Cathy was acknowledged for her remarkable contributions and many years of service to Surf Life Saving.

Cathy is a great role model for others who want to become Surf Life Savers in the future.

n a fine Saturday afternoon in September 1917 a granite column was unveiled near Second Valley School to honour the members of local families from the then Rapid Bay District Council area who enlisted to serve in the Great War. The column was funded by private subscription (a sum of £113 was raised). According to local newspaper reports, approximately 250 people attended the unveiling ceremony, at which the local school children saluted the flag and sang the national anthem before refreshments were taken.

Thirty six names were inscribed on the column, including those of two nurses. At the time, four had paid the supreme sacrifice. As the war continued, another four names were added to the monument and seven more lost their lives.

On 23 September 2017 the Second Valley Progress Association (SVPA) is planning to hold a commemorative event to mark the centenary of the unveiling of the column. A reenactment of the 1917 ceremony is proposed at the site of the monument.

The SVPA would like to locate

relatives and descendants of those who are named on the column to invite them to attend the event next year. We would be very glad to hear from anyone who is a relative or who knows of any relatives of the following so that we can make contact with them.

Festival Fleurieu Choir

new community choir has recently been formed with the aim of presenting a concert at the Fleurieu Festival in April 2016.

hat a lovely way to start the day with Mayor Glen Rowlands unveiling the new Hooded Plover display at the front of the Normanville Natural Resource Centre (NNRC) followed by a celebratory champagne. NNRC volunteer George Reeves used his creative talents to help promote the plight of the Hooded Plovers on the Fleurieu, by creating this exhibit. Another volunteer, Esther Ratner provided the colourful back drop making this a very eye catching display.

Hooded Plovers are now starting to breed again on our local beaches, they make their nests on the sand between the high-water mark and the sand dunes. The sea washes up seagrasses and algae and other ‘beachwrack’ the insects, sand-hoppers and other small critters feed on. Living and nesting right on the beach, the plovers and their chicks don’t have far to go for a feast.

Hoodies lay up to 3 eggs directly on the sand in a simple, shallow nest scrape. Both parents help look after the nest and keep watch for predators for 28 days until the eggs hatch. Then the fluffy, flightless chicks hatch and need to feed themselves to grow full size in 35 days. Young Hoodies can fly after five weeks.

When disturbed the chicks stay still and hide.

Being well camouflaged and not moving means people, dogs, vehicles or horses on the beach can step, drive or ride right on the eggs or chicks. If people or dogs stay near the nest they can keep the parents away from the nest. That means the eggs are left in the sun to bake or are at risk of being taken by natural predators such as gulls ravens and kestrels. If the chicks are always running away or hiding they won’t be feeding and may starve.

Let’s Go Fly A Kite

oin us on Thursday 13th October at 1pm at the Yankalilla Library to make and fly a kite. This event is part of the Nature Play Festival 2016 which runs from 2nd-15th October 2016.

This festival is targeted at South Australian families and children to encourage more outdoor activity. There will also be a presenter organised by STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) @ Fleurieu talking to the kids about flight/ aerodynamics and if time permits conduct a drone demonstration.

hen Europeans first arrived in Australia, Numbats (Myrmecobius fasciatus) were found across the southern part of the continent. Now there are less than 1500 individuals left; mostly as a result of fox predation and habitat destruction. The area around Adelaide would have had its share of these striped marsupials, but they are now locally extinct and on the Red List of Threatened Species put together by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Numbats are easily recognised by their distinctive stripes, which helps explain why they are sometimes known as Banded Ant-eaters; though they don’t eat ants, instead preferring to munch around 20,000 termites a day!

This taste for termites results in Numbats being diurnal, which means they are active during the day.

They have to collect termites when temperatures are warm and the insects are out foraging, not hiding in tough-walled mounds. Being diurnal makes Numbats much more vulnerable than their nocturnal marsupial cousins, as many predators such as foxes, birds of prey and snakes are also active during the day.

The only places to see Numbats in the wild are two areas not far from Perth, though there are a number of captive populations that have been reintroduced to areas previously inhabited by Numbats – safely behind next page

protective fences.

One of these sanctuaries is at Yookamurra, just two hours from Adelaide, where they have an education program and school camps. September 7th was Threatened Species Day, a good time to think about the creatures most at risk of disappearing forever if we don’t act to save them. There is that triangular cross-section of the succulent leaves, but this one has ‘teeth’, or a rough edge, to the sharper side, whereas Karkalla is smooth. Its large yellow flowers are the biggest giveaway to its identification though. Unlike our local pink-flowered pigface, this is an invasive introduced species …in fact, it is so invasive it is listed in the Invasive Species Database for 24 countries! Unfortunately, the plant hybridizes with the local pigfaces, where they come into close proximity, and this leads to other problems e.g.

It is because European Australians have hardly touched these foods for over 200 years that I am writing it”. e celebrate cultural and culinary diversity, yet shun the foods that grew here before white settlers arrived. We love superfoods from remote exotic locations, yet reject those that grow here. We say we revere sustainable local produce, yet ignore Australian native plants and animals that are better for the land than European ones.

In this, the most important of his books, John Newton boils down these paradoxes by arguing that if you are what you eat, we need to eat different foods – foods that will help to reconcile us with the land and its first inhabitants.

Defibrillators

O

ver a year ago I began writing this article and researching the topic of community defibrillators.

It has been a long, difficult, stressful journey. It seems that we are at last seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

First, an introduction to the defibrillator machine.

A DEFIBRILLATOR or Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) gives a shock to the heart and combined with effective CPR provides the best chance of survival for those experiencing cardiac arrest. The AED delivers measured electric shocks to attempt to restore the heart to a normal rhythm.

Each minute before an AED is used decreases a casualty’s chance of survival.

There are defib machines at the Delamere Store, at the Cape Jervis Community Club, Sealink Terminal and Second Valley shop/camping ground. They can be used by untrained people as the calm voice guides the user through each step and, as time is critical, it is better for an untrained person to use it rather than wait for someone who is trained.

For help with either the defib or with CPR a call to 000 will enable a St John’s officer to talk you through the process.

Below are some contact numbers. Keep them in your phone, on the fridge or in your purse or wallet.

A suggested strategy: • Begin CPR (if untrained phone 000 for ambos to talk you through the process)

• Phone for ambulance • Organise the Defib machine.

REMEMBER these numbers are to be used only in a health emergency requiring the defibrillator.

A Community Defibrillator/AED

A

small group of Cape locals has decided to do some fundraising in order to purchase another machine for the Cape, one which will be accessible twenty four hours a day. To this end a fund has been started with several hundred dollars contributed already. A ‘thermometer’ or such will be at the Tavern, tracking progress.

About the end of October there will be a community event designed to have some fun and raise more funds, perhaps through raffles and other means.

In the meantime if you can contribute some small change or a larger amount it will help to reach the goal. If you are able to contribute goods or services for raffle prizes and /or an auction, please let us know.

It is anticipated that there will be an unveiling of the machine when in place.

t’s worth getting your diaries out and pencilling in a couple of dates for Sealand Theatre performances at next year’s Festival Fleurieu which runs over the Easter and school holidays, Friday 14 – Sunday 30 April 2017. Second Valley is the location of both events.

On Wednesday 19 April 2017, Sealand Theatre and Leonards Mill will stage A Mad Tea Party as part of Festival Fleurieu (at a time yet to be announced), and on Saturday 29 April 2017, Sealand

Theatre and Second Valley Progress Association will host Gary Burrows’ band The Rustlers as part of an Alice in Wonderland-style Grand Ball to be held at the Soldiers Memorial Institute, opposite Leonards Mill. In both instances, visitors to the events will be encouraged to get into the spirit by wearing ‘mad’ hats at the afternoon tea at Leonards Mill, and/or dressing up as fantasy characters, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s stories, for the ball.

pen Day was held on Sunday September 11th at 1pm. President Karen Devitt welcomed members and wished them all a good and successful season of bowls. Mayor Glen Rowlands spoke of community involvement and of Council’s commitment to sporting clubs. The final payment of the YBC loan was presented to the Mayor in the shape of a large cheque, he then wished all members a great season and officially opened the 2016/17 season. Life member Bev Bowyer rolled the first jack and Club Champion for 2015/16 John Carroll, rolled the first bowl. After a short game of bowls everyone enjoyed afternoon tea together.

Pennants begin on Thursday October 6th and Saturday October 8th for the open gender competition.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon

he club will be hosting a Melbourne Cup lunch again this year so put Tuesday 1st November 2016 in your diary and get a table together. Mayor’s Short Story Challenge Congratulations

ongratulations to the inaugural winners of the Mayor’s Short Story Challenge within the district.

• Reception – Year 2 Winner: Lily, Yankalilla Area School • Year 3 - Year 4 Winner: Monique, Yankalilla Area School • Year 5 - Year 7 Winner: Kelsea, Rapid Bay Primary School • Year 8 – Year 10 Winner: Falie, Yankalilla Area School • Overall Winner: Falie, Yankalilla Area School Alexandrina Library Service and Victor Harbor Public Library have been running the Mayors’ Short Story Challenge for six years and Yankalilla has joined for the first time this year. An incredible 140 entries from students from Yankalilla Area School, Myponga Primary School and Rapid Bay Primary School were received. Thank you to Mayor Rowlands and the Yankalilla District Council for sponsoring this event.

60th Celebration

hank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our school’s 60th Birthday. It was a fabulous day and evening of reminiscing and enjoyment for past and present students, families and staff. I heard so many people were talking about it over the weekend.

The afternoon started with a photo booth registration which was a lot of fun followed by a delicious BBQ cooked by the Lions Club. Trish Jones’s class performed so confidently on stage and got the whole school toe tapping to their songs with Wendy McPhee on guitar. The tours organised by Sonia Parker with tour guides from the Leo Club and SRC were amazing.

The guests thoroughly enjoyed how much information the students knew and the Café stop.

In the evening guests enjoyed their dinner while being entertained by our MC, Wally Pillen and the very talented Phil Noel who entertained us with some Jazz.

Many guests had some very funny stories to tell over the course of the night and our photographer Steve Shute took some great photos of us at the dress up photo booth. Thanks to Wally, Phil, Steve and also to our bar volunteers Simon Fox, John Noack and Mark Savery.

Congratulations to the committee—Joy Rowlands, Bridget Fox, Kelly Bowyer and Tonya Bennett who worked so hard to make the 60th such a successful event. Their dedication and determination, not to mention their great ideas made this event so successful. They have been a fabulous team to work with and the school is a better place because they are
