Busy Brewery

he Smiling Samoyed Brewery at Myponga was a popular spot on Father’s Day. The brewery which opened for business in November 2012 offers 5 craft beers for tasting in quaint tasting trays made from old LPs. The retro decorations add to the atmosphere inside while those who choose to sit outside have panoramic views of the reservoir.

Family groups enjoyed the beautiful weather with some bringing along their own Samoyed dogs as they are

welcomed in the Beer Garden and veranda areas. Wood fired Pizza made from fresh local ingredients were most popular as were the tasting platter and wedges. Wine was available for non-beer drinkers as well as a delicious pomegranate and apple cider. Well worth a visit on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

ello Readers, We have dragged ourselves through another winter and spring is finally here.

The Wirrina Bluegrass Festival appeared to be another successful weekend and it was certainly well worth getting along to see the many talented musicians strutting their stuff. I even purchased my first ever bluegrass CD after being suitably impressed by ‘The Company’ from Queensland.

Two of the members are Australian Bluegrass Champions and you could understand why when you heard them. Ok, so it wasn’t Metallica, but just as good within their own genre and variety is the spice of life!

It’s time for another local government election and all those on the voting roll will receive their ballot papers towards the end of this month.

Golfers! The Yankalilla Golf Club needs your support. The club is under pressure due to lack of membership and it would be very sad to see its demise. Not to mention the loss of a beautifully scenic golf course that was established 90 years ago on land that was donated to the community for this purpose. See page 29.

Amazing! I actually left room for myself and nothing was left out of this issue due to lack of space. Things are picking up ahead of summer as they always do and hence an extra four pages could be added this time.

Don’t forget the 132nd Annual Yankalilla Show is on this weekend so get along and support this long running tradition. It’s also good for taking your mind off the problems of the rest of the world, of which there are many and de-stressing yourself for a day.

t our August meeting the ladies Probus Club enjoyed an interesting look at Ted Van Dijk who is a retired senior sergeant of Police. For 35 years of his 42 years police service he was a crime scene investigator (CSI) and in 1999 was appointed the manager of the (serious) Crime Scene Investigation unit. As a trainer, supervisor and specialist identification officer Ted was awarded the Australian Police Medal for the Service to Forensic and Crime Scene on Australia Day 2001. In May 2003 Ted joined the Federal Police Peace Keeping contingent in East Timor as part of the United Nations, this group was preparing to hand the governance of this small nation back to its people, providing a crime scene investigation support and training function over the next six months Ted shared some of his experiences with the group on this Wednesday.

Citizenship Excitement

n Friday 29th August Shirley and Don Owens took their oath of allegiance at a Citizenship ceremony at the Council Chambers watched by over 50 guests. Shirley had been inviting people for weeks to share their special day likening the event to the importance status of “being married again!”

Both born in the UK Shirley and Don travelled widely but on visiting their daughter and son-in-law in Australia decided to migrate. They chose Normanville to settle and are delighted with their choice. They say that they love the district and the friendliness of the people. Mayor Schlein said that it was very special to have new citizens so excited about taking the step to become an Australian. After the ceremony Shirley’s daughter sent photos to their UK family. A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed by the guests and Shirley and Don thanked them for sharing their special day

and proudly displayed their Citizenship Certificates.

coastal sand hills of Sections 1024 and 1025 previously known colloquially as 'Lover's Bay'- a beach with no road access - are now North Carrickalinga. Over the intervening years most Carrickalinga residents have left the rear of their allotments wire fenced giving easy access to the adjoining farm-land as their private park/hobby farm.

The beauty of the Carrickalinga seascape has long been enjoyed by those fortunate to have a dwelling on the seafront or rising land. There are no available vacant allotments in North Carrickalinga and land values have escalated because everyone desires to have a house with sea views - the last sale of a vacant lot in Petrel Close realised $515,000. Those seeking to enjoy Carrickalinga and friends of the current owners cannot buy an allotment with a view near the sea as the few vacant lots are tightly held.

The current Council Development Plan Amendment proposes the rezoning of 2 hectares north of Bennett Court to allow a street going west off Brown Road with the back of the blocks on the 62m contour - this altitude matches the height of the rear o f l o t s o n S t a c e y A v e nu e , Carrickalinga Rise.

Naiama, the Scragg family company, would like to see the dome of the hill become a publicly accessible reserve with road access, revegetation, reticulated water, lookout and picnic facilities provided by Naiama for the enjoyment of the people of the three towns and others passing by. This gift to the community is dependent on the land south and north of the 62m contour being rezoned by Council as residential.

This park will have an iconic vista of the wide Yankalilla Bay and the hilly coastline south to Rapid Head with sunsets to die for. South of Noarlunga, this is the only cliff overlooking the sea that could be made accessible to a main road where no man made features contaminate the foreground.

JELFYS BACK AGAIN I did not quite get to the starting line last time but I am back for another go. First of all I would like to encourage everyone to have a vote irrespective of who you are going to vote for. Voting is preferential and by post with papers being distributed from Monday 20th to Friday 24th of October, closing day being Friday 7th NOVEMBER so you have a couple of weeks to make up your mind.

Local Government is the third level of government in Australia and at this stage at least it is non party political.

The nine elected members make decisions about your garbage collection, where the new library will be and perhaps how we will get through a council amalgamation which is I believe unfortunately imminent.

I imagine the job is very difficult but needs to be done and I have the time and perhaps I will obtain the necessary information and skill to do it. If you do not have strong feelings about anyone vote me No.1 or perhaps No.2 and I will give it a ago.

I do not have strong opinions on the issues at the moment because I have not the necessary information but I wish to minimise the damage and get the best results out of decisions such as development or amalgamation.

I live in the Main Street, Yankalilla and I go shopping at the local stores almost daily and I carry my mobile phone at all times (0412 930 086 ) but I must admit I can only use it as a phone, thus I am available most days.

hakespeare’s Women brought great delight to the audience at The Courthouse on Sunday afternoon September 7th.

Jean Crowther (pictured) presented the wit and wisdom of Shakespeare in a way that made the meaning clear and accessibly humorous or moving as was appropriate.

yponga Bowling Club held a benefit night to raise money for a defibrilator for the club on Friday 5th September.

A two course dinner was provided for the 92 people who attended. Thanks to all helpers.

was interested to see in the September “In The Loop” that council have finally mentioned information about the situation with the library. In the Community Library update, written by the mayor, I feel that several issues need questioning.

1) Council anticipated the request for separate libraries. Why then was this not discussed in council and some budgeting foreseen and included in the budget?

2) Staffing. “Council has made significant contribution to staffing costs of the library.”

On my calculation council have contributed less than 10% of staffing costs. I do not see this as significant.

The cost to council in future will be greatly increased.

3) Yorketown library is mentioned as having an award-winning library. What is not mentioned is that the Yorketown council and school worked closely together to establish the library IN THE SCHOOL. If this is put up as a good example, why was this not done at Yankalilla? Also will our new library be open the same hours as Yorketown?

I feel that the comments in the Community Library Update were misleading to the public and I feel that a retraction is needed.

ach of the two public meetings to discuss issues about the closure of the Yankalilla School Community Library have drawn full houses in the main meeting room at The Centre. This is a strong indication how much many people value their library access.

I have noticed that the overwhelming number of people who have attended these meetings are in the ‘elder citizen’ bracket. It is likely that many of these people did not have free and easy access to books and facilities in their youth, and this possible restriction in the past makes them vigilant in making sure that future access to books and services is

not diminished.

I am also aware that many of these people have either lived through times of war or are the children of people who did. The values of fighting for ‘freedom’ are still deeply entrenched in the way they view the current culture. These values give rise to a need, not only that proper process is followed by community organisations, but that it is also seen to be followed.

At the second meeting, three Resolutions were voted on. The first asked that the School Community Library Management Committee reconvene and prepare a statement for the community about the coming closure of the YSC Library (as was required in the Handbook). By show of hands, this was overwhelmingly supported, with four voting against.

The second and third Resolutions were ● that this community meeting expresses disappointment that the School Governing Council acted with lack of due process (notifying all parties with 9 months’ notice) in relation to the closure of the School Community Library. ● that this community meeting encourages the School Governing Council to be more open and transparent with issues relating to the wider community in the future.

These two were passed by overwhelming show of hands with no one voting against.

Re: There is no God

hank you for publishing the letter headed “there is no God” authored

by B Reel September 2014. It seems that B Reel is being critical of “peddlers of religion” in your well balanced and professionally edited publication. The very fact that you published his letter is evidence that there is no bias in your presentation. It is interesting to observe that B Reel considers the Bible irrelevant and yet he demonstrates some knowledge of the best selling book in all of history. He says he has never consulted the Bible yet he derives references to sin, repentance, salvation, conversion and even threading a camel through the eye of a needle! He also “guarantees” that certain sinners will

“repent and be saved by Jesus”. How can he guarantee something he doesn’t believe in? So, who am I who makes these comments? Firstly, I am not a “peddler of religion”. Such a broad term can embrace many religions of which Christianity is one. I am a Christian, a sinner who has repented and is saved by grace, not of myself lest I should boast, it is a gift of God. I endeavour to follow continually the teaching of Jesus Christ who paid the price for my sins by His sacrificial death. The good news is that all who know Him as their Saviour and Lord, and maintain that belief until their last breath, will be saved from the consequences of their sin. We have all sinned and come short of God’s glory.

The resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ are proven facts. He is alive forevermore. I am not hereby “peddling religion”. As all Christians should, I proclaim a message of hope and love to any who may want to receive the greatest gift ever offered to mankind. It seems appropriate to close with the words from John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

re they robbing the poor? After several notices that council rates for pensioners would be capped with a rise of 3.1% my rates went from $902.00 last year to $1112.70 this year.

I calculate this to be a rise of 21.25%.

Talking to staff at the council was a complete waste of time. I am one person. If all pensioners have been treated the same, council should feel very ashamed.

s a resident of Yankalilla District I wish to say thank you to the Happy Valley Girl Guides Group along with their leaders, after I believe they heard about the Natural Resourse Centre Normanville tree planting day at the Park. They decided to come down, camp at the jetty caravan park with, enthusiasm did a great job working with other volunteers.

This brought back very good memories of our District Scouting groups - Cubs, Scouts, Ventures, Brownies, Guides - in the past years, for their work in the community, one being planting 100’s of trees at Wirrina.

These young people, too will be able to recognize in the future with pride, with what they have achieved in Bungala Park. I can assure them their help has not gone unnoticed and has been greatly appreciated by members of the community. A big thank you to all concerned.

ith summer fast approaching we are about to be subjected to the irritating noise and danger posed by jetskis. They are the motorised blowflies of the beach and shatter the peace and quiet of families enjoying themselves on the beach. They also pose a danger as last year a swimmer was killed in Melbourne. They also scare off dolphins and other marine life.

There may be some argument that they are a safety valve for letting off steam.

There is a case in our highly regulated society there is a need for the outrageous and for risk taking.

If jet-skis were used as a means of transport, their existence might be justified, but from what I can see little transportation is done. They are mainly about high-speed fun – sometimes just going around in circles as fast as possible. There is something obscenely foolish about jet-skis.

Other councils in Adelaide have banned their use and I urge Yankalilla Council to consider an outright ban.

I

n retirement I found myself drawn into the world of Local Government as an elected member. It wasn’t on my bucket list but I was elected to Council in April 2014 at a supplementary election. Council elections are being held in November this year and I have nominated.

I have discovered that I’m now a politician, which is a concern as I never really held politicians in very high regard! This was mainly because I felt they promise things that they have very little control over as they are only 1 (one) of a group. To push one’s own agenda isn’t really considering the betterment of the community.

Since being on Council I get asked “What is it like being a councillor?”

Short answer - interesting and enjoyable!

Long answer - I have seen the region through different eyes and learnt a lot about the district as a landscape and the people in it. The process that decisions are made is not as efficient as it could be. Therefore, I believe that there are better, more transparent processes that could be adopted.

When I speak with people I hear lots of different points of view and believe many people approach council decisions the same as I did - that Council is hopefully doing its best for the region and there will be mutual benefit for both

rural and township communities. I didn’t agree with some decisions, or the way some funds were spent but stayed silent because I felt there were enough people being vocal.

The most interesting aspect of being on Council is hearing residents’ and ratepayers’ differing opinions, then analysing the information to make what I believe to be the best decision possible for the benefit of the whole community.

As a true believer of the benefits of communities working together I want to build an environment where the community wants to support Council.

Getting opinion from the silent people is a challenge. Some of you are the movers and shakers of our district and as we approach election time I’d encourage you all to get involved by voting for a candidate who has a voice from the community. I am that voice.

A good example was when the Jubilee Hall was proposed – an initiative of the E d u c a t i o n D ep a r t me n t . D u r i n g consultation the COMMUNITY decided it needed extending for the best use of a total facility, so bigger and better fundraisers were organised which brought us together. It was a great time and the district ended up with a great asset.

The Yankalilla region is not as recognised as a destination when compared with places like Victor Harbor, McLaren Vale etc., but is well recognised for its beauty and tranquillity as demonstrated by the number of holiday makers and non-residential ratepayers. Some 45% of our ratepayers are non-residents who may not know what our community life is about. I hope those who aren’t connected with the district will at least support local businesses as well as local events because each dollar spent in the district goes around many times.

The point I make is - for our region to grow it has to have community support.

Please consider these questions before you react to my comments.

e are hosting a Garden Tea Party at Gaias Garden as a fundraiser to raise awareness for men's health and suicide prevention.

Three years ago we lost our beautiful son to suicide. Our family is bearing the unbearable, the loss is devastating for us and his friends. As we travel this dark journey we have come to know how many people are suffering depression and we need to in a small way to bring some contribution to help raise awareness. We are focussing on men and boys as they are statistically more likely to die this way. Our hearts go out to women who are suffering as well.

We wish this to be a day of beauty and joy, our garden is gorgeous. We are so fortunate to have a live

leven local artists from Yankalilla Art met in the supper room at the Agricultural Show grounds on Thursday, 4th September and took part in an acrylic painting workshop with Richard Rogers.

Richard treated us to three very detailed demonstrations and in between these, we each had a completed artwork done before lunch and most of us had a second painting completed or near to finished by the end of the day.

We normally finish our art sessions around 4pm, however we enjoyed

Richard’s workshop so much and we learned so much from it, none of us wanted to leave… even at almost 5pm. The time just went so fast!

On behalf of us all, I would like to thank Richard for an absolutely fantastic art session. We are all agreed that we are definitely looking forward to having another workshop with you next year!!

Yankalilla Historical Society

W

hen the gates at the showgrounds open on October 4th the public will gain entry to the 132nd Yankalilla Show. The attractions will include a large range of events and activities, many of them unimaginable to the early settlers who, in 1856, attended a show in the vicinity of Yankalilla. There was much rivalry between the townships of Yankalilla and Normanville regarding the venue.

The Yankalilla, Rapid Bay and Myponga Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc. was officially formed at a meeting in the Yankalilla Council Chambers on 31st July, 1882. By forming the society on prescribed lines a government grant was obtained, and a working committee of thirty-three men was formed.

Because of the great rivalry between the townships of Yankalilla and Normanville the first show was held simultaneously in three areas. One area was in a paddock owned by the Proprietor of the Yankalilla Hotel, Mr. Deeney. Another site was at the Yankalilla District Council Chambers, and the third site was Archdeacon Morse’s booth.

In 1833 Mr. Robert Norman gave permission for the show to be held at the Royal Hotel on Jetty Road, Normanville, and adjoining paddocks.

Shows were followed by dinners at the

nearby hotels. Lively show meetings occurred, with heated discussions over problems such as the show’s venue, and the advisability of allowing a publican’s booth on the grounds. At the 1884 meeting the three clergymen were excluded from the committee however the motion was rescinded at the next meeting.

In 1900 the Show Society purchased two acres of adjoining land from J. James for twenty pounds per acre and, in the same year, the Refreshment Room was built. Additions to this room were declared open by Mrs. G. A. Stacey in 1929.

In 1914 South Australia experienced a drought that was the worst one ever experienced. Its effect was so widespread that no wheat was available for export. Sheep numbers fell by half, and the river Murray dried to a series of waterholes. The effect on the Yankalilla district was severe enough to cause the cancellation of that year’s show. In 1915 the drought broke with a violent thunderstorm.

When the coastal steamer, “Karatta” was still in service in the 1920s it also ran excursion trips to both Second Valley and Normanville, bringing city visitors from Glenelg for special occasions such as the Show Day at Yankalilla.

In the years since those early days the show has continued to grow, with traditional events such as the judging

The Yankalilla Historical Society meets on the second Monday of the month at 8pm in The Centre, Main South Road. Our next meeting will be on Monday, 13th October. Normanville finished in third place after defeating Second Valley in the elimination final 13 sets to 7. A great effort from Nathan, Ray and Vanessa winning three sets each, best for Second Valley was Paul Thomas and John Hignett. Yankalilla defeated Myponga Green also 13 sets to 7 in the first semi-final to go straight into the Grand Final. Myponga Green defeated Normanville 12 sets to 8 with some very close matches; well done to Nathan Eatts defeating Trevor Wendleborn in three sets. Best for Myponga Green was Dave, Michael and Jackie. The Grand Final saw the Yankalilla “boys” once again taking out the

The Presentation Dinner was held on Monday September 15th at the Myponga Football Club. The Sportsman Award proved too close to call so four players received trophies this year, Nathan Eatts and Bruce Lyle from Normanville and Peter Griff and Jack Ireland from Myponga. The Robert Whittlesea Memorial Shield for the player of the finals series was presented to David Wenham from the Myponga Green team. A new shield the “Tim Stokes Memorial Premiership Shield” was presented to the Yankalilla Captain Sean Gallagher. Festival Fleurieu One Fleurieu region, seven hamlets, four community meetings add up to one exciting Festival Fleurieu in 2105

O

n the first night of spring, an enthusiastic group of locals met at Cape Jervis Tavern with Festival Fleurieu Chair, Greg Mackie, Coordinator Jillian Langford and eight festival convenors to share ways in which the beauty, creative talents and special environment of each part of the region can contribute to and embrace the festival next April.

Cape Jervis and surrounding areas, including Rapid Bay, Delamere, Second Valley and Wirrina, are ready to celebrate with ideas ranging from events, exhibitions, offers of venues to a range of accommodation. Expect to hear more from the locals near the Cape.

The next stop for the Festival Fleurieu planning group was Inman Valley on Monday 15th. Once again festival convenors travelled in the community bus driven by Tash Hunt from the Visitor Information Centre to meet local enthusiasts, this time at the Inman Valley Country Kitchen.

Inman Valley festival planning is in full swing with the fifth Quilting Exhibition and the popular

Inman Valley Presents. Other ideas waiting to be developed include walks and drives to significant history sites, historical and current photograph exhibition, a ‘Roads less travelled’ project to take visitors to remote beauty spots and vistas of the Western Fleurieu. Watch projects become reality!

At each meeting, held on wet evenings warmed by the numbers of community present, convenors talked of the planning for: the ‘Streetscape’ Door project, opening street carnival, art trail, youth activities, the website, the raffle and sponsorship program. Two cartoon characters will appear frequently in print and later “in person”. There is to be a raffle with a $4000.00 Kangaroo Island holiday first prize. The Festival Fleurieu is taking shape!

Get involved now: As volunteers to assist at events, with donations of doors or primary coloured paints.

South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron Wirrina Flotilla

he boating season is coming around again and Wirrina Flotilla had their first request for assistance for several months when on September 14th a call was received from a stricken vessel out of fuel half a nautical mile off Second Valley, requesting a tow back to Wirrina. Each year we remind boat owners of the need to carry out preventative maintenance on various items on their boat and trailer – attention to such things as batteries, navigation lights, steering cables and replacing stale fuel can ensure a pleasant day on the water.

Checking trailer brakes, wheel bearings, tyres and lights will help make the journey to and from the ramp a safe one. Checking that you have the necessary in date flares and that your EPIRB is registered and functioning can save a lot of grief and dollars if you get a visit from Marine Safety officers on the water or at the ramp.

Wirrina Flotilla has had 25 requests for assistance in the past year, 5 from vessels that needed to be towed by Sea Rescue 05, while in 6 other instances, craft in need of assistance were either able to be repaired at sea to enable them to get to safety or assisted by a passing boat. The remaining requests for assistance related to a cliff rescue at Second Valley and sea and land searches. The largest search we were involved in was for the two fishermen missing in the Cape Jervis area in February. Sea Rescue 05 crew spent well over 100 man hours on the water, initially searching alone then joined by other Volunteer Marine Rescue and SAPOL vessels and aircraft for two days. The Sea Rescue 05 spent additional time on the water in that week, carrying out searches and responding to sightings of possible debris from the missing craft.

The SA Sea Rescue Squadron Annual Awards Dinner was held at our West Beach clubrooms in August and five

members of Wirrina Flotilla were presented with plaques in recognition of their efforts during the Cape Jervis search – Bruce Stark (Skipper), Michael Parr, Peter Webb, Ross Manthorpe and Phil Richards. Wirrina Flotilla was also awarded the trophy for Most Efficient Craft and Crew 2014. The plaques were presented by Commodore John Burrow.

The Annual General Meeting of The Squadron was held on September 8th and Mr Alan Cormack was elected Commodore for the coming year. Al has a connection to the Yankalilla area through his property in Bethel Road and is a frequent visitor to the district.

I remember seeing a photo of an otherwise beautiful woman who was hit in the face by a charge of lead shot, leaving her badly blotched.

Arthur Calwell, former Labor leader, was also the close range target of an assassin with a sawn off shotgun which left his facial features very different to what they were.

Burns from fires have caused terrible damage and disfigurement. Car accidents have scarred many a face. The use of thalidomide left lots of children with stumped limbs and legs. The polio epidemic twisted faces and withered up limbs and put many in wheel chairs. Thankfully, immunization has almost eliminated the debilitating disease.

Obesity is causing many Australians to bulge in the wrong places. And, old age is waiting to wrinkle our skin, thin our hair, and weaken us to a point of dependency.

ne of the saddest cases of deformity was that of Joseph Merrick, a young boy who lived in the late 19th and early twentieth century. His skin became blotchy and lumpy, his lips swelled abnormally. His head grew enormously – to such an extent he had to sleep sitting in a chair - resting his face on a pillow. One leg became twice the size of the other and an unsightly protrusion grew from his forehead. He fell and damaged his hip which made walking difficult. His mother died when he was ten.

Unable to get a job he struggled to survive. He came up with the idea of offering himself for exhibition in the hope of earning money. Someone set up a special room and advertised him as ‘the Elephant Man.’ But, his appearance was so repulsive people couldn’t bear to look. The same thing was tried in

Europe. But, with even less success.

A Doctor Treves cared for him during the final years of his sad and short life. Treves said that underneath his unsightly exterior was a person of quiet and pleasant nature.

We tend to avoid the abnormal? But, often they need us and crave our company.

Christ, Himself, suffered deformity and indignity.

A prophet had previously written of him in these words: ‘…his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness—‘ ‘Like one from whom men hide their faces.’

The flogging, the mocking and spitting, the crown of thorns and finally the crucifixion left the Son of God shockingly malformed.

Ironically, however, the one deformed, became the one who transforms. A verse in the Bible says: ‘…our citizenship is in heaven from whence we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.’ Phil 3:20-21 It’s an exciting anticipation. The Bible speaks about ‘a better resurrection.’ It says the dead will come forth from the grave ‘incorruptible’ – a perfect transformation!

Proposed changes to NRM water levy from 2015-16

A

revised Natural Resources Management water levy is proposed to come into effect in 2015-16 for licensed water holders in the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Northern Adelaide Plains and Western Mt Lofty Ranges.

The NRM water levy funds the work required to ensure sustainable, long-term access to water for farmers, irrigators and industry in the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges region.

Currently, a water levy is paid by licensed water users in the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Northern Adelaide Plains areas. However, from 2015-16 it is proposed that licenced water holders in the Western Mt Lofty Ranges will also pay a water levy.

While the existing levy is based on a combination of water allocation and water use, the revised levy is proposed to be based solely on water allocation.

In 2015-16, the NRM water levy across the AMLR region is proposed to be $0.007 per kilolitre, or $7 per megalitre. This compares with the 2014-15 water levy of $0.005/kL on allocation and $0.005/ kL on use (equivalent to $10/ML).

Under the proposal the levy would be subject to an annual CPI adjustment commencing in 2016-17.

Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Board chair Chris Daniels said the water levy was essential to the fair, sustainable availability of water for licensed users across the region.

Prof Daniels said the decision to include water licence holders in the WMLR acknowledged that the costs for water resource management was

He said the inclusion of the WMLR area enables the NRM board to introduce a single flat rate across the four prescribed areas: Barossa, Northern Adelaide Plains, McLaren Vale and WMLR. On current usage patterns, the new levy rate may mean some water users in the Barossa, Northern Adelaide Plains and McLaren Vale could pay less in 2015-16 than in previous years.

The proposed move to an allocation-based levy may encourage water licence holders who under use their allocations to trade surplus water in areas

where a trade is possible, freeing up unused water and increasing production opportunities in the region.

Prof Daniels said the NRM board was also in discussions with peak industry bodies and water users over the proposed formation of an annual $200,000 industry support fund aimed at helping improve water efficiency and manage ageing infrastructure.

He said the NRM Board was keen to hear from the region’s water users with ideas for potential improvements that could be implemented with the aid of the industry support fund.

You can see for miles in every direction – beautiful green rolling hills, the ocean in the background and Yankalilla township just below.

The Yankalilla Golf Club enjoys a reputation in the golfing community as being one of the most social clubs around. Our women tee off each Tuesday and the men each Saturday and we then convene to the clubrooms to share our stories of glory and woe from the course that day. It has a real community feel and a history and loyalty amongst members that reaches back 86 years.

But, like so many golf clubs, our club is struggling for numbers in both the men’s competition and the women’s. The ladies club in particular has now reached a stage where we are no longer able to nominate a pennants team and we do not have enough members to participate in the Golf SA competitions. We are hoping to keep the ladies club alive with a social game each Tuesday and we would also be willing to organise a 9 hole competition for those just learning or short on time.

We also run a 9 hole twilight competition on Friday evening during the summer months which is followed by a BBQ tea. This is also a great way to get involved in the club if you are a new golfer or if the evenings are more convenient for you.

Unless we attract more members to our club, we are in danger of becoming extinct and losing our beautiful course. If you are one of the many people in the community who think that one day they might like to try golf, act now as “one day” may be too late. Golf is definitely a challenging game that can have you feeling like a champ one day and a chump the next, but it is also a wonderfully social game with good friends and great exercise.

So please, if you have ever thought of playing golf, act now and contact the Yankalilla Golf Club before we lose our club and course forever.

Help Save the Heath Goanna Goannas are our last remaining large, native, terrestrial predator in southern SA and they need our help!

T

he Heath Goanna, also known as Rosenberg’s Goanna, (Varanus Rosenberg) is classified as vulnerable in South Australia. Regionally, it is classified as Endangered in the Mount Lofty Ranges, Northern and Yorke, Eyre Peninsula, Murray-Darling Basin and South East regions.

The Heath Goanna was once common in many higher rainfall, cooler areas across southern Australia but is declining. It now occurs in mostly small, isolated populations in WA, SA, Vic and NSW. There are possibly less than 100 individuals left in each of the NRM regions in which they occur!

In the last three years there have only been 18 recorded sightings of a Heath Goanna on mainland South Australia. While they are still relatively common on Kangaroo Island, they are also declining there.

How can you help save the Heath Goanna:• Report any sightings of alive or dead goannas to DEWNRThreatenedWildlife@sa.gov.au • Protect native vegetation and termite mounds in your local area • Be a responsible pet owner by keeping pet cats indoors and dogs on leads • Leave valuable habitat like fallen trees, logs and smaller timber in the bush and on grazing land • When driving, slow down for goannas to let them cross roads safely (and be mindful around road kill which may attract goannas onto the road)

If you have not attended a veggie swap this is a great chance for you to come and see how it works. Bring something to swap, fresh produce, home baked items, eggs, honey, flowers, recipes, knowledge etc. and join like-minded people sharing, chatting and enjoying a cuppa. The idea is to share your excess so there is no value assigned to your items, it is about fostering community spirit and sustainable living through encouraging people to grow fruit and veggies in their garden and providing an outlet for sharing these.

Then stay and experience all the fun of the ‘fair’.

The centre will be hosting a snake pit! A variety of venomous snakes are in the pit, together with two ‘Living with Wildlife’ staff who will answer questions about the snakes and how they behave in close vicinity with humans. An added feature of the Snake Pit is the full-height clear plastic windows on each side to allow safe viewing by children.

his member of the mustard family is a sprawling, succulent annual, up to half a metre tall. It grows in clumps in the sand along seashores, such as Morgans Beach. Leaves are fleshy, shiny, green and deeply lobed. The 4-petalled pale purple flowers appear year round. They open from the bottom of the stalk, with fruits sometimes appearing at the bottom of that stalk simultaneously. The ‘rocket’ in the common name doesn’t come from the plant being edible like salad greens, but from the shape of its corky brown fruits… they are swollen, both with or without horns, near the base, making a ‘rocket’ shape!

n September Lions welcomed another new member, Brian Didicoat a Yankalilla resident for 37 years. Brian is the 3rd new member to join Lions in as many months. Yankalilla Hockey Club

he Yankalilla Hockey Club held its end-ofseason presentation night at the Inman Valley Hall which was superbly catered for by the Inman Valley Country Kitchen, on Saturday, September 20th with about 70 players, parents and supporters attending.

The night concluded a successful 2014 Hockey season for the Club.

Once again we had two men’s team in the competition. The Gold Men’s team finished in fifth position which meant they played in the B Grade Finals. They went on to win the B-Grade final by defeating Aldinga Blue 3-1 to give them back to back premierships. Hopefully they will be contenders for the A Grade next year.

The Black Men’s team showed a lot of improvement this year but unfortunately they still ended up at the wrong end of the premiership table. This team showed a lot of courage in fronting up each week and with the addition of a few new players they became more competitive as the year progressed and they ended up with 3 draws for the season. Special thanks must go to Paul Sieben for his efforts with coaching the senior teams.

The Women’s team struggled this year as they were not able to field a consistent team even though they had over 18 women play throughout the year. They ended up in fourth position and lost to Aldinga Green 1 – 0 in extra time in their Semi-final. Thanks go to Stephen Holt for his match day coaching of the women.

The Under 16 team this year was again coached

by Michael White. This year the competition was reduced to 9 a side competition and they were able to field a full team of U/16 players and they were assisted by several U/13 players. With this mixture of players, they performed very well and came fourth on the premiership table.

Unfortunately they lost to Goolwa 3-2 in extra time in their Semi-final.

The Under 13 team this year was coached by Daniel Schubert. Due to further recruitment, this team consisted of both new and experienced players. They performed very well and ended up 5th.

The 2014 COTA SA Every Generation Festival & Awards is almost upon us.

T

he Every Generation Festival is South Australia’s largest community festival, held annually in the month of October – or as we like to call it – FUNtober. The Festival touches communities in every corner of our state and with over 1,000 registered events on the 2014 calendar, the Every Generation Festival is larger than the Adelaide Fringe. It regularly attracts over 200,000 participants to a variety of activities with an emphasis on positive ageing and intergenerational communication.

From humble beginnings in 1967 the festival has grown to be an important celebration for older South Australian’s, their families, friends and the wider community.

The Every Generation Festival celebrates and champions all aspects of positive ageing – physical, mental and emotional well-being – and there’s plenty there for folks who like to party as well!

Drawing together communities from many cultural backgrounds, the festival provides ample opportunities to try new things like yarn bombing, Japanese martial arts, stunt kite-flying and African drumming or taking a slightly less-rushed path with bush walks, theatre, art exhibitions and even an Antiques Fair. For the more adventurous there’s even a night-time spooky, cemetery walk. With

local councils, community groups, friendship groups, retirement organisations and individual members of the public putting their creativity to work there is literally something for every age at the 2014 Every Generation Festival.

adly the Middle East has descended further into the chaos of war. Libya, Egypt, Iraq and Syria and now another group has garnered world attention. The Islamic Group calling themselves IS or the Islamic State. Their lightning quick success in Iraq and Syria and their barbaric mass and individual executions have horrified the world and countries that had gotten out of the quagmire of the Middle East find themselves drawn back in coalition force to counter the growing influence of these jihadists who wish to establish a new territorial Caliphate. Heading back to counter there expansion are the countries that had all but completely disengaged; USA and Canada, Australia, Britain, Germany and France; they along with even a wider breadth of allies are mustering to prevent this phenomenon from gaining influence. To the Bible student this is significant because all of these milieus in the Middle East will ultimately draw all nations into what will become the greatest conflict of the ages – ARMAGEDDON. The words of Joel the prophet: “Joel 3:1-2 For, behold, in those days

So again in the last month in accord with God’s intent “the mighty men are being awakened” and being inexorably drawn back into the Middle East where ultimately Israel and Jerusalem will become the fixation of nations and centre of world conflict. Russia will become involved with another opposing coalition of nations all mentioned by name and ‘a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation” (Dan 12:2) will rapidly develop and cause global fear in all mankind.

ello everyone time goes so fast these days I can’t keep up.

Spring looks like it’s on the way but hope we get a little more rain for the farmers sake. Our Devonshire Tea Morning was well attended so thanks to everyone who came to support us.

ears ago when a child still going to school, the Friday night treat was to visit the Adelaide Central Market for our weekly fruit and vegetables etc.

No matter the weather, winter or summer we made this trip into town.

Compared to today’s market, it was not flash, the wind seemed to turn the corners inside the establishment, and there was no protection from the elements for the side stall-holders nor the customers. One just rugged up and hoped for the best.

However, the atmosphere, friendliness and service more than made up for any discomfort that may have been experienced.

There were the elaborate stalls right in the middle of the market, some of these present stall-holders bearing the name painted on top being descendants from the original owners. I can still recall the owner of one of the fruit stalls dressed always with a spotless white apron and wearing a lovely shirt

a gold coin donation. We would love to see you there and if you have not been before you will enjoy yourself and maybe pick up some nice Christmas presents and at the same time support a good cause.

I recall one cold, windy wet night, right on the corner of the market where the wind and rain must have been really challenging, there was a young lad dressed in a one piece bather type suit and he was a contortionist, and what he could do with his arms and legs was most eye boggling!

After shopping, we would go to the pie cart alongside the GPO, my father and I would sit behind the canvas coverings and I would watch him devour this special treat for himself, a pie upside down in a soup bowl, covered with thick green pea soup and maybe cover the whole mess with tomato sauce, and thoroughly enjoy it.

This cart was also the gathering of the

town winos and down and outs as they were called in those days.

If the sight of the pies in their presentation didn’t turn one off, then the sight of the Friday night diners from all around the district slurping on their pie floaters usually with no teeth in their mouths certainly did!

The market was on my way to Adelaide High school in Grote street and, Friday mornings we would all buy licorice blocks, a sheet of four for a penny, gone was all my pocket money.

Years later, we had a trip to Adelaide and we decided to have a floater in the same locality, and this was also the night that the Adelaide Opera House had its opening, so here were the diners in their finery sitting on the post office steps tucking in as well.

We still make the trip to the market and it is the same atmospheric experience only more exciting from those visits years ago.

An Adelaide Landmark! Still enjoy it at my age.

Yankalilla Netball Club

ongratulations to the two 11 and Under Teams which won the Grand Finals in Divisions 1 and 2!

These young girls played very well and won their matches convincingly.

Well done girls! Unfortunately, our Senior 7 Team (D Grade) were Runners up in the Grand Final after a hard fought game. They had a great season only being defeated in 3

matches.

At the Great Southern Netball Association Dinner on the 8th September, Jodie Lienert was presented with the GSNA Umpire of the year award, a prestigious award.

Amanda Martin, League (A Grade) was named as Goal Attack in the Team of the Year. Brittany Bugg was the Runner up for the Best and Fairest

award in Senior 2 (A2 Grade), Fiona Wuttke won the Best and Fairest for the Senior 3 (B1 Grade) while Jo Taylor tied with 3 other players to be Best and Fairest in Senior 7 (D Grade). In Juniors, Gemma Ellis was Runner Up in the 11 and Under Division 2. These girls all did so well to be recognised at Association Level.

At the Club Presentation Dinner, Tania Baldock received Life membership of the Club while Kerri Fitzgerald was recognised as the Volunteer of the Year. Each of these ladies have given over 20 years service to the Club. Elli Hogben was presented with the Jody Scheer Trophy for her efforts as a player, coach, umpire and co-compiler of the monthly newsletter, at only 18 years of age she is already a great club person. Player Awards were also presented for each team.

Veterans Health Week comes to Yankalilla

The session will include a low impact mobility lesson, a free luncheon and information on diabetes management, heart health, nutrition and exercise programs available at the centre.
