Alternatively, if you are not a gardener, just buy of pot of flowering petunias in December and place it in the display between December 13th and 20th. After the long weekend in December, the pots of petunias will be given back to the community.

Fleurieu Group Of Justices 50th Anniversary

O

n the 30th September, 1965 the Southern Group of Justices was formed and is now known as the Fleurieu Group of Justices. The Justices Group cover the southern Fleurieu Peninsular and operate Justices Rooms in Yankalilla, Victor Harbor, Goolwa and Strathalbyn. The Southern Group as it was known then began with Harold Bedford (JP) of Goolwa and Lester James (JP Ret) of Parawa sharing a vision to establish a local collegiate group for JP’s resident on the Fleurieu Peninsular.

On Friday, 25th September, 2015 Justices gathered at the Lutheran Church Hall, McCracken for a 50th Anniversary Afternoon Tea to celebrate this special occasion. The guest of honour was His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le, AO, Governor of South Australia. Seventy Justices and friends

attended the event and heard the Governor give his key note address.

During the ceremony His Excellency presented a Certificate of Honour to Lester James (JP) (Life Member) as an inaugural member of the Group and Life Membership to Peter Krichauff (JP) of Delamere for his service to the Group over the past 29 years.

The Fleurieu Group currently has fifty two members and continues to provide a free services to the public on the Fleurieu Peninsular.

Justices would also like to acknowledge the District Council of Yankalilla, City of Victor Harbor and the Alexandrina Council for their assistance in providing accommodation for the Justices Rooms.

January “Twilight” Band Concert

hat better way to enjoy our balmy summer evenings than to relax and listen to music surrounded by family and friends.

CLUB FLEURIEU is holding a “Twilight Band Concert” in their grounds on Saturday 23rd January 2016 with music starting at 6pm. The renowned Victor Harbor Band has a wide repertoire and will play some new and some old favourites plus some special

numbers to delight the children and guests singers to please us all.

A sausage sizzle will be available and the bar will be open for drinks from 5pm. Bring along your chairs and rugs and a picnic tea and be ready for a great night. Tickets are $5 for all and children under 15 are free. Buy your tickets early from the Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre to be included in the draw for a prize!

Men’s Shed Progress

F

ollowing the approval by the members of the Yankalilla & District Over 50’s Club at its AGM to provide a $25,000 grant for the construction of suitable premises for a Men’s Shed an application for Planning and Building Approval has recently been submitted to the Council.

Club Fleurieu President Malcolm Schlein said “It is anticipated that this process should take 6-8 weeks and it is hoped to start construction in January.

The Executive of Club Fleurieu and The Men’s Shed continue to work together to have the building erected and in operation as soon as possible.”

Club Fleurieu Planning Day

n 26th September Club Fleurieu held their first planning day with Committee members and a small group of enthusiastic members.

Background papers were provided covering topics that were to be discussed and participants were encouraged to canvass the membership and public for ideas. Adrian Skull a renowned facilitator led the group.

There was great enthusiasm to plan the future for the next four years.

Discussion ranged from new activities to major capital works. As a result of this day the Committee have made a commitment to investigate a healthy life style centre and how it can be funded through grants. It is hoped to include an Aquarobics Pool, gymnasium and walking trail for members. The Committee will also be looking at major upgrades to the existing buildings to provide better facilities for members. It is expected to have a strategic plan and business plan available by early December for

member’s comments. The plans will provide opportunities for members to be involved in new exciting programs for 2016. President Malcolm Schlein said “The Planning Day has set new directions for the Club and the Committee now has the role to put the plan into action. One of the first things we need to do is to provide members with the opportunity to be involved through a survey. It is important to see what the member’s priorities for 2016 are.

Membership support and involvement is critical to the Club moving forward”.

My Fair Lady casting call

he search is on for actors, musicians and crew for the South Coast Choral & Arts Society’s next major musical production – My Fair Lady.

An information night for those interested in being part of the May 2016 show was held on October 28 and auditions will be held in Victor Harbor on November 28.

The society is privileged to be able to present My Fair Lady on the 60th anniversary of when it was first performed on stage.

A substantial orchestra is expected to be part of the show and will include strings, woodwind, brass and very comprehensive percussion section.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, November 28 at Adare Town Hall.

Twice weekly rehearsals will commence from Friday, January 29, 2016. The crew will present seven evening performances on Friday, May 6; Saturday, May 7; Wednesday, May 11; Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 with matinees on Saturdays May 7 and 14.

Director Cathy Venning is keen to audition a wide range of people although will be restricting the cast to those aged senior high school and above. Most of the up to 40 cast will need to be able to not only deliver dialogue but also sing and do some dance moves.

My Fair Lady tells the story of flower seller Eliza Doolittle who is “saved” from the streets by British upper class bachelor Henry Higgins who has a wager with language buff and retired

British officer Colonel Pickering that he can turn Eliza into a lady. The musical has comedy, drama and romance as well as some great uplifting tunes including I Could Have Danced All Night, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly and On The Street Where You Live.

Calaboose set to re-open

couple of weekends of 30 degree temperatures, flowering trees bursting into bloom, the sound of cricket at the oval…sign that winter is now well and truly behind us and summer is just around the corner.

Another sign of summer is the reopening of Normanville’s favourite steak restaurant, Calaboose Grill and Smokehouse.

Calaboose is set to begin its third summer in Normanville on Friday November 12. Featuring casual ‘New Orleans’ style, Calaboose offers smoked ribs, brisket, fish and pulled pork as well as perfectly grilled steaks, burgers and seafood. In keeping with the best of traditional Southern USA rib joints, all the cooking at Calaboose is done over open wood fire. The one off grill and smoker design was created by Blue

Temper Ironworks of Middleton which adds a special smokiness to all of the food. Traditional fuel of red gum and cherry wood add to the flavour complexity and results in a one of a kind steak or burger. The setting in Normanville’s former jail, complete with cells and exercise yard, makes the dining experience truly unique.

Calaboose will be open every Friday and Saturday from November 12 until the beginning of May, with seven day trading from Boxing Day until mid January. The unique exercise yard dining area is available for private parties and special occasions at any time. Take away will be available whenever the Calaboose is open.

A Conversation with Harold Pinter

W

hen we “retired” down here to the Fleurieu, (from the big smoke up at Summertown) my wife, Maurene, told me my entire life as a journalist and reading & reciting poetry and singing songs to our children (while the spit lamb was turning) had been “one big act”. So she thought I should get back into acting ... which is why I jumped at the chance to join Kathryn’s Sealand Theatre and do a “one big act” Pinter play; and sing some “Songs of the Sea”.

“If I hadn’t I would have just sat around waiting for God(ot)”, said Terence. _________________________________________ Conversation with Harold Pinter is a one-act play that pays homage to the famous British playwright Harold Pinter, written in the style of his own work. The play parodies Pinter's Betrayal - and its theme of infidelity. The play is essentially a twohander: with main characters Dicky (played by Peter Gates) and Harry (played by Terence McEwen); there is also a small part for a waitress. Dicky runs into Harry in an upmarket pub, and they continue their conversation over lunch. What starts as a spontaneous reunion of old mates, turns into something potentially darker as the two men spar over past and present relationships.

Peter Gates and Terence McEwen are naturally wellcontrasted and their dynamic brings freshness to the play that Sealand’s Artistic Director Kathryn Pentecost wrote with actor/director/filmmaker John Rado. Indeed Gates and McEwen are ‘naturals’ on stage – though this statement belies the truth of many, many years in the public arena: Gates as an award-winning actor who has worked in theatre, film, TV commercials etc; McEwen as a journalist here and abroad. This version of A Conversation with Harold Pinter has been updated in a minor way to take account of changing technology, but mostly remains true to the version written in 1987 that came out of a creative obsession with Pinter's work. Pentecost and Rado have both played in and directed various Pinter pieces, including Night, Request Stop, Black and White, The Collection, Family Voices and so on.

The love-affair with Pinter lives on, and mention of the Adelaide production of Betrayal a few months ago, was perhaps the trigger for this revival of A Conversation with Harold Pinter. Two radio versions have been aired: one in Sydney and one in Katoomba.

This is the first stage version in South Australia and it will be directed by Pentecost – and though this show is only a one-off, there are plans to tour it in the future.

In a writing career that spanned 50 years, he is a Nobel Prize winning playwright who began his career as an actor, and also worked as a director and screenwriter.

Influenced by Samuel Beckett (and others), Pinter’s work is perhaps most well-known for its deliberate pauses and often seemingly mundane dialogue whose undercurrent can be very menacing, especially in work such as The Birthday Party. Indeed, some have described his early work as ‘comedy of menace’. Later works, such as No Man’s Land (1975) and Betrayal (1978) have become known as ‘memory plays’ – though the interpretation of Pinter’s works can create contention amongst reviewers, scholars and drama critics.

A Conversation with Harold Pinter will be staged on Thursday, 26 November 2015, as part of Sealand Theatre's first season of performances, to be held at 7pm in the Soldiers Memorial Institute in Second Valley. It will be accompanied by a talk about Pinter's work and a supper. The play will be another fundraiser for Sealand Theatre, and go towards their major production called Songs of the Sea, which will be staged next year.

Sealand Theatre Inc. has already started taking bookings for A Conversation with Harold Pinter, and if the Honey Sweet Hearts sell-out show is anything to go by, this will be another exciting event for local people wanting a fun night out! SHANNONS Yankalilla Cruise 15 November 2015

O

nce again the Rotary Club of Yankalilla is proud to present the Annual SHANNONS Yankalilla Cruise on 15 November 2015 on the Yankalilla Memorial Oval. The Yankalilla Cruise Team has been hard at work organising this event for several months now, and it’s shaping up to be not just a fabulous day, but a fabulous weekend of fun and activity!

The Cruise is designed primarily for Classic Cars, Custom Classic Cars, Hot Rods ‑ anything with a chrome bumper of the pre 1979 era. If you wish to enter your vehicle, there are no entry forms or time limits to park. The idea is for this fabulous event to be accessible for both spectators and enthusiasts alike.

The entry fee is only $15 per vehicle or $5 per person if you enter without a vehicle (children under 14 free), payable at the Oval gate. Only Classic Cars, Custom Classic Cars and Hot Rods will be allowed to park on the Oval.

Raunchy Sugar will perform at the Yankalilla Hotel from 8pm until late on Friday 13th.

On Saturday 14th November DJ Jess will be at the oval playing his great selection of music, and there will also be a mini-cruise along the Carrickalinga coastline late in the afternoon (contact Billy Peel for details), followed by The Lincolns performing at the Yankalilla Hotel (8pm until late). There will be a dance floor, so we can dance the night away. Please book early if you wish to dine at the hotel.

As in previous years, the Cruise will leave from Castle Plaza at 10am, and there are many viewing opportunities along the way, including along the Southern Expressway Bike Track and other parts of Main South Road (especially the parking bays at Sellicks Hill). The best place to be, of course, will be on the Yankalilla Oval for a close up look at these magnificent vehicles. Cars will start arriving at the oval from about 10am onwards.

Prepaid entrance tickets for Cruise vehicles will be available at Castle Plaza on the morning of the Cruise and also from Billy & Moddy Peel at the Yankalilla Hotel on the Saturday night.

At the oval The Wise Guys will provide fabulous music throughout the day on the Yankalilla Transport Stage, and once again DJ/MC Jess will be there to help the event flow along. Bring your friends, put on your dancin’ shoes and dance the day away on super-sized undercover dance floor. There will be licenced bar facilities, stalls, displays, and food, food, food! Local service and sporting clubs will provide all manner of food and beverages. Rotary will be offering its delicious steak sandwiches, and other barbecue food, and also our legendary donuts. With the assistance of the District Council of Yankalilla, we are once again able to provide a Bouncy Castle for the kids to play on free of charge, and Helivista will be available for Scenic Helicopter Tours at affordable prices. We will also have PIT STOP on site again (secret Men’s Business! – if you are curious, check out our website).

There will also be an assortment of vintage caravans on display.

One really exciting coup for us this year is the showcasing of the SHANNONS Insurance Super Rig at the Cruise! We are very grateful for state manager Ron Prouse for facilitating this for us. The Super Rig

I

moved permanently to the beautiful seaside town of Second Valley 3 years ago from an affluent Adelaide Hills suburb where our bins both recycle and waste were emptied once a week and green waste fortnightly, and roads were sealed. First I would like the council to explain their excessive rates, the property I left in the hills was twice the size of the one I now reside in, yet the rates the same!! How is this when we have no water, no sewerage, unsealed roads and a rubbish collector who flies down the road as if racing in the grand prix, leaving bins strewn all over the roads, not to mention if a child inadvertently stepped onto the road they would not stand a snowflakes chance in hell of escaping being hit. We also trim the verges around our property as that has also proved too hard for the council to complete satisfactorily, if at all!

Thank you so much for the advice re snake bites, however as we have no consistent mobile service in Second Valley (now 12 months overdue), and we are not meant to move when bitten, I guess we are just meant to hope someone stumbles across us while we lay there immobile as advised and die!! Why is it up to individuals and local business owners to constantly fight for satisfactory mobile and internet services, surely the Yank Council should follow up and push this issue for their constituents instead of the obligatory answer when

The Council has invested untold funds into Bungala Cottage and to what avail? when it is never opened to the public, yet the public toilets at the Second Valley beach are a complete disgrace, embarrassment and decades overdue for a revamp. Not to mention the rubbish which is piled high by tourists trying to do the right thing alongside the bins in the holiday season, due to the fact that first there aren’t enough, and secondly they not emptied often enough, so beach goers have to endure the wafting foul stench of rubbish while trying to enjoy a day at the beach with their families.

Second Valley is a hugely popular and idyllic tourist destination, also voted best beach, offering fishing, snorkelling, kayaking, diving, rock pooling and safe swimming for families and children, one only has to look at the carparks at all the local beaches, Normanville, Carrickalinga, Rapid bay in peak season and Second Valley undoubtedly has the greatest numbers visiting.

Thank god for the Second Valley Progress Association who are constantly striving against all odds to improve our beautiful haven, as the Yank Council has sadly obviously long forgotten about the Jewel in their Crown!!!

It is hard and it gets harder. Book a mini skip and get a bloke and a backpacker with a car trailer rock up to remove garden waste! I got a $20 reduction because it wasn't enough to fill the bin I ordered. Call an electrician for a quote, “I will be there Monday”, Monday was a Public Holiday, not my problem, but obviously his. I was abused on Tuesday when I rang and quoted his ad “Guaranteed to turn up”. I rang another bloke for a quote for sliding doors, fly screens and security doors. A chap came out and took all the measurements and I never heard from him again. I rang someone for a quote for Pest Control, do not ring on Friday! Monday, after telling me on Friday that he would ring me back to make an appointment, he rang me to confirm that I had rang him! I got a local builder in to quote for an extension, I got a phone number for a draughtsman. I have had successful dealings with Darcy and I recommend him with glee. Hopefully more local tradies can be more trustworthy in the future. Or do I go elsewhere?

FWBA organized for Miranda Lang, Executive Officer with Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism and Amber Nancarrow, Economic & Tourism Development Leader with The District Council of Yankalilla to each do a presentation to the Forum about their respective roles and what was happening in the region in regards to tourism. Both Miranda and Amber’s presentations highlighted the many positive aspects of what was happening and also what opportunities there were to further promote and drive tourism. Amber spoke to the recent endorsement by Council of the branding for the region - Fleurieu Coast: Made by Nature - which has been well received by business owners. This brand gives the region a clear focus, which provides a common platform for marketing and promoting activities.

he Fleurieu West Business Association (FWBA) held a Tourism Forum for local business owners on Monday October 12th at the Yankalilla Football Club. There were just over 30 business operators at the forum representing a broad range of business types from across the region.

The Forum was put on by FWBA to provide an opportunity for local business owners to come together and have a conversation about what’s happening in regards to tourism in the region and to be part of a discussion about what should or

Business owners talked about how they would like to have a better understanding of what other business operators are doing across the region, to improve social media presence for their businesses and the region in general, getting positive messages and local stories out to the wider community, having more nature based events and looking at how to both attract and support new business owners to the region.

FWBA will compile the feedback from business owners at the Forum and these will be used to inform planning for the association for 2016.

ords are a wonderful medium – they can be joined together to form sentences, paragraphs and, finally constructed into a story.

It is exciting to put pen to paper and see what comes forth whilst, at the same time the vocabulary is added to, henceforth increasing one’s ability to widen the writer’s knowledge.

Words are a challenge to me and, those that are foreign or new instantly are a challenge to discover meanings, origin, and discovering ways they can be incorporated into anything I put to paper.

It happened I was tidying up and reorganising a bookcase when I came across a couple of books, one of which had mostly obscure, unheard of words and the other a very small book written by a well-known humourist who makes a living at delving into the origin of some of our well known words and phrases.

For instance, in the olden Baghdad days, it was famous for its delicately patterned silks – in Arabic this material was called ATTABI –hence this is why, today we call a cat with similar markings a TABBY! In old Siam now Thailand, when the King was displeased with a subject he presented him with a white elephant.

Because such an animal was seen as sacred, it could not be used for work and cost of keeping it often bankrupted the unhappy owner.

Today a WHITE ELEPHANT is something expensive and useless!

A final original word – JUGGLING eggs is a risky business...If you are not careful you could end up with egg on your face. (it’s no yolk! ) The every day word YOLK is from the Anglo-Saxon GEOLU... which appropriately meant

YELLOW! This section is called FLIMFLAM LANGUAGE – a language of doublespeak and deception. These are used by corporations who want to lessen the blow of firing of staff.

How about for starters words like, ‘paring down’, ‘downaging’ ‘offshored’ ‘tough decisions’ and, then we have the Corporate deceit, ‘shifting the goalposts’, ‘aggressive accounting’ and last but not least ‘strategic oversight’ – how many times have we heard and read of this?

There are so many more and more to come after that again, as the ‘spin doctors’ get really down to work and justify their generous salary packages after the ‘workers’ get their deserts!

Now for a bit of ‘funnery’ – some words which are contributable to their partial vernacular spelling. Nb - ‘funnery is my made up word for this article.

Accrostic – a stick that’s lost it temper.

Accrue – people who work on a ship Artery – study of paintings Avoidable – what a bullfighter tries to do.

Coffee – a person who is coughed upon.

Cauterise – made contact with her.

Caramel – a motorised camel Choosy Blond – one for whom a Tom or Harry won’t do.

Rubberneck – what you can do to relax your wife Relief – what trees do in the spring Varicose – located nearby Selfish – what the owner of seafood store does.

Protein – favouring young people.

Rampage – section of a book about a male sheep.

Do hope that all of the above is accepted as lighthearted observation – no offence intended. Rox.

ix teams of eight players competed in this years competition. Teams from Myponga, Second Valley, Links Lady Bay, Normanville and Yankalilla made up our association.

Yankalilla once again proved to be the team to beat playing in their sixth grand final. Second placed Second Valley lost to Yankalilla in the first week of finals while third placed Normanville defeated forth placed Links Lady Bay in close match 12 set to 8 sets.

Normanville continued on winning with a strong win over Second Valley 14 sets to 6 sets. Best players were Nathan Eats (Norm) and Esther for Second Valley. The Grand Final was played in good sportsmanship with Yankalilla proving too strong for Normanville. Many thanks go to Mike Mignanelli and the Myponga players for filling two teams again this year. Well done !

Our Presentation Night was held on Monday September 21st at the Normanville Surf Life Saving club.

Sportsman shop award was won by Scott Grundy (Y) and he also took out the “Robert Whittlesea memorial

shield Player of the Finals”.

Sean Gallagher captain of the Yankalilla team accepted the Tim Stokes Memorial Shield” on behalf of his team.

he Yankalilla membership began in 2007 with just 6 members. Many and varied collectors belong to our local group, antiques, toys, books, car memorabilia, fire equipment, badges, antique guns and much, much more.

Each year a display is held at the Agricultural Hall and our members work very hard to arrange this exhibit.

ur last meeting was on 6th October where Arthur Clarke was presented with an OAM for reaching the ripe old age of 90. Well done Arthur!

President Tim McCumiskey continued our education about the wonders of kerosene. Amazingly it has been used to power tractors and fridges. Perhaps we should be considering it to fuel the next voyage to Mars.

During September we had a successful well planned caravan trip to Mildura.

Once again expertly organized by Barry Oats.

Our guest speaker was Peter Hinks who spoke about how nuclear power stations work.

Peter was involved in the running of the Oldbury Nuclear power station in the UK and has a vast knowledge both practical & theoretical of the subject.

He gave us a chemical lesson on nuclear fission and uranium isotopes.

Peter explained that a nuclear power plant works pretty much like a conventional power plant but it produces heat energy from atoms rather than burning coal, oil, gas or other fuels.

Nuclear energy currently provides 14% of all generated electricity. The 439 reactors now operating in 31 countries provide reliable base load supplies with almost zero emissions during operation.

There is a high degree of public scepticism towards nuclear power that was exacerbated by the 2011 Fukushima

tragedy. There are concerns about the creation of long-term wastes and the need for reactor cores to be maintained at a high temperature in order to keep their coolant-water at high temperatures.

Peter did not consider these concerns justified as people were afraid of things they did not know about.

He also did not consider renewables to be a viable alternative to fossil fuels because of their intermittency.

This is a view not shared by the SA Govt as their target is to generate 50% of the state’s electricity from renewables by 2025.

It was a topic of much interest as members had many questions. We thank Peter for sharing his knowledge with us.

Hooded Plover Update

T

he eggs in the nest at the Bungala Estuary on Normanville Beach hatched on Saturday 3rd October and for 5 days 3 tiny chicks were running up and down the beach. Unfortunately 2 chicks disappeared and when writing this article there was only one left. However the adult Hooded Plovers were being extra vigilant both watching over this chick very closely. The chick cannot fly for 35 days after hatching so is very vulnerable to predators especially ravens, snakes, foxes and dogs. Once the chick can fly it has a much higher chance of surviving.

I would like to thank everyone who took such a keen interest in these birds over the last couple of months, it is very encouraging to know that most people are concerned about their survival. Also a big thank you to all dog walkers who are only too happy to put their dogs on leads near the nest or near the chicks where ever they are on the beach.

There is also a nest with 3 eggs at Myponga Beach which the Hooded Plovers have been sitting on for 3 weeks.

The centre is looking for another couple of volunteers to help monitor Carrickalinga North Beach and Carrickalinga Beach, so if you love walking along the beach each week contact us on 8558 3644 to find out more about the program.

If you see Hooded Plovers nesting please contact the centre on 8558 3644 – as you can see from the photo there are usually 3 eggs which are very well camouflaged sitting in a slight scrap in the sand just above the high tide mark.

“For people who want their cats to catch small rodents like rats and mice but don’t want them to catch birds, this is an effective devise to use,” Ms Hall said.

Robyn Brown's whose two cats, Chocco and Milo, were recruited for the study said they used to be active wildlife hunters and would often leave birds like wrens on her doorstep.

"We were very concerned about that. We've tried everything. We've tried double bells and all kinds of things and we've tried locking them in at night time," she said.

But she said since the collars were placed on her cats more than two years ago, they had not caught a single bird.

"We just can't believe it. We're very happy," Ms Brown said.

fashion relic of the late eighties and nineties, the humble scrunchie has found a new lease of life preventing the slaughter of wildlife by domestic cats.

In a new study, West Australian researchers found putting a scrunchie-like collar on cats reduced the amount of native wildlife killed by more than half.

Murdoch University PhD student Catherine Hall spearheaded the research which observed the behaviour of 114 cats for two years. Over the course of the study, the owners of the cats froze everything their pets caught, both with and without the collar. She said the results showed the scruchie-esque neckwear reduced the number of birds, reptiles and amphibians captured by the cats by 54 per cent.

“Bright colours are very noticeable to songbirds, they should see the cats further away, allowing them to escape earlier”, Ms Hall said.

“Because it’s based on colour and vision, cats won’t be able to learn to make it stop working. Whereas people say that with bells, cats can learn to make them less effective over time.”

e have seen large patches of this weed at Cape Jervis, and also in Deep Creek CP. It likes both disturbed sites and natural areas: wasteland, pastures,

coastal environs, grasslands, etc. So not a very choosy plant about habitat, unfortunately! It flowers in late winter-spring, when the yellow, daisy-like flowers are very distinctive, with their black centres and a single ring of petals. Before the flowers, you’ll see a rosette of ground-hugging leaves, heavily lobed, with a few hairs on top but felt-like underneath. The flower stems are very hairy. It spreads only by seed. These can spread short distances by wind, but also on people and animals. So be careful to clean tools and footware etc., if you work near them!! Once seeds set, to control this environmental weed, you need to poison or dig out the tap roots. Just slashing won’t work!

"Clark’s Living Roll Of Honour" Centenary at Normanville

T

he Morton Bay fig trees that are found on Jetty Road at Normanville are celebrating their Centenary this year with their first plantings as saplings on Saturday, July 3rd, 1915.

Thanks to the great historical work of Heather Fretwell from the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club, this story was unearthed from the South Australian archives just in time to recognise the 100th year of the historic plantings of these magnificent trees.

The trees were originally planted by Mr. R.B. Clark in 1915 in honour of each volunteer from the area who fought in World War I. In fact, the trees were planted as a War Memorial before the concept of the Anzac Memorial was recognised, making it one of the first War Memorials conceived of in Australia.

This is the original story that features in the Adelaide newspaper “The Register” in June 1915: THE COUNTRY A TREE FOR EACH VOLUNTEER NORMANVILLE, June 21, 1915.

Recently Mr. R.B. Clark conceived a novel scheme for perpetuating the memory of many courageous young men who have gone from this neighbourhood to help in the defeat of the Empire’s enemies.

A couple of years ago, a scheme for beautifying the township of Normanville was created by tree planting along the streets. This was embarked upon by a committee of residents, but the majority of the trees, in consequence of the extraordinary dry weather, did not thrive.

The present season appears to be much more propitious, and Mr. Clarke has decided to plant, at his own expense, a Moreton Bay fig tree in honour of each volunteer.

To each, a tree guard will be attached a card giving the name of the volunteer in whose honour the tree is planted, and bearing the words. “When can his glory

fade” and an appeal for the protection of the tree.

The row has been designated “Clark’s Living Roll of Honour”.

Already one tree is singled out ‘for special and reverent care, the young soldier whose name it bears having sacrificed his life for his country at the Dardanelles on May 30, 1915, that being of A.S. McArthur, killed in action.

Those honoured to date are: Maj J.W. Parsons; Sgt. A Clarke, Lce.-Cpls. S.G. Dixon, W.R. Caper, Ptes, A. Clarke, W.R. Dixon, A. Scott, W. Dunstall, A.S. McArthur (killed), L. Tonkin, B. Martin, F. Forrest, F. Pengilley, C. Smith, W. Smith, A. Smith, S. Martin, J. Sinclair (wounded), H. Caudle, J. Hoskins, F. Clarke (from Sydney), A. Skinner (HMAS Australia) and Driver H. Collins (wounded).

Since the publication of the paragraph in “The Advertiser”, Mr. Clark has been the recipient of many letters from different parts, congratulating him upon his patriotic spirit.

It would be a great idea for those participating in the Normanville Pageant this year to quietly reflect on those who gave their service to this country a century ago as they pass by the 'Clark’s Living Roll Of Honour’ Morton Bay fig trees on Jetty Road in their Centenary year.

Last month, mention was made of Mr. R.B. Clark’s scheme for perpetuating the memory of many brave young men who have gone from this and neighbouring districts to help in the defence of the Empire.

Nineteen names were given as being already honoured.

Of this number, one gallant young soldier has been slain, and two others wounded.

Mr. Clark has since planted five more trees, and these bear the following names: Privates H. Caudle, J. Hoskins, F. Clarke (from Sydney), F. Rowley and A. Skinner (HMAS Adelaide).

Dancers’ Palliative Care Room Donation

A

new palliative care room will be established at the South Coast District Hospital thanks to a $10,000 donation by the Victor Harbor Social Dancing Association.

Director of nursing and midwifery, Anne Price said the money would be used to upgrade an existing room for use as a palliative care suite.

“This generous donation will allow us to create a welcoming and comfortable space for patients and family members staying in the palliative care room,” Ms Price said.

“The room will feature a kitchenette and fold-out bed, while the bathroom will undergo minor upgrades.

“It’s about making the space as welcoming as possible and an inviting stay away from

“We thank the Victor Harbor Social Dancing Association for their generous contribution towards this room, which will be greatly appreciated by the community.”

The hospital currently has one other designated palliative room.

New Portable Ultrasound for Hospital

new $60,000 portable ultrasound machine is now in use at the South Coast District Hospital.

The machine was purchased by the South Coast District Hospital Auxiliary and will be used in the hospital’s emergency and

maternity departments.

Director of nursing and midwifery, Anne Price said the new machine could be easily wheeled to where it was needed, allowing earlier diagnosis and treatment decisions for patients.

“This ultrasound machine is specially designed for emergency department purposes and will be used for a wide variety of applications including assisting with difficult venous access and nerve blocks to relieve pain,” Ms Price said.

“With the new portable machine we can more easily assess patients for foreign bodies such as metal fragments/glass in wounds and identify intra-abdominal bleeding from trauma.

“The ultrasound is also a valuable addition to the hospital’s maternity department.”

Participating Provider South Coast District Hospital Auxiliary President Lainie Anderson said the organisation had a proud 75-year history of supporting the community hospital.

“The local hospital is a place where we all spend time at some point in our lives, so it holds a special place in the community,” Ms Anderson said.

“The Auxiliary is guided by hospital staff in what we fundraise towards and the ultrasound is an amazing piece of

equipment, which will benefit patients in many departments.

“This piece of equipment represents a year of fundraising by many local groups and organisations – it has been a whole-ofcommunity effort.”

A special morning tea to thank Auxiliary members for their donation and to celebrate 75 years of support was held on 7 October.

O

ne of the nicest aspects of Christmas is the message of peace and goodwill and the spirit of giving. Many years ago in the little town of Lobethal tucked away in the Adelaide Hills some home owners and local businesses hand-painted light bulbs to decorate their homes and shops for Christmas. Now more than 60 years on this tradition of “lighting up” to celebrate Christmas still continues. The numbers of residents and businesses participating in “The Lights of Lobethal” increases annually. The locals give up their night time peace for over two weeks to invite people to visit and delight in the magic of Christmas shown by the lights which deck the houses and businesses and twinkle in the trees.

Lobethal’s Lights are visited by over 250,000 people from South Australia, Interstate and Overseas and claim to be the largest Community Light Display in the Southern Hemisphere.

The display will feature the best birdies created as part of the Make a Birdie online competition, which invited artists to spread their crafty wings and come up with a feathered mascot for the 2015 Craft & Quilt Fairs. Birds spanning flamingos, parrots, lorikeets and kookaburras were just some of the many bird species represented in a unique and individual way, each boasting its own distinct character.

Emanda has honed a passion for art and mixed media art since her school years and has enjoyed exploring many different styles and disciplines over the past 40 years. Now focusing on textiles and bookmaking, Emanda organises and participates in a range of textile art exhibitions and enters online competitions and country show competitions throughout the year. She also exhibits locally during the Festival Fleurieu and SALA festival and organises the annual Easter mixed media Exhibition – Mix it Up at the Yankalilla Show grounds. As a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild of SA, Emanda organises the Guild’s participation in exhibitions, promoting the diversity of hand stitching and embroidery.

After a bit of experimentation with trying to create a fabric rock shape, I had my “ah-ha!” moment and used a real rock which I wrapped in textured fabric, then painted. This allowed me to stitch the finished bird onto the rock.”

he Tourism Forum on the 12 of October organized by the Fleurieu West Business Association showed how business in our district working together can achieve benefits for our community as a whole. Indigenous Tourism and a trail through the Fleurieu Coast linking up to The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail and Heysen Trails was talked about by one of the discussion tables. The Tjilbruke Dreaming Tracks opened at 10-11am on December 18th 1986 by two Elders Kaurna Burkameyu Willy Williams and Ngankiburka Doris Graham.

We could build upon the work started nearly 30 years ago during the Jubilee 150 celebrations for our districts walking Trail. This map shows Tjilbruke's Wanderings and the old place names on the Fleurieu Coast.

ello again readers, We have enjoyed some wonderful rain and I believe there is still more to come but the way the bureau of meteorology predict we are in for a Godzilla el nino. Not much rain at all. That weather system is frightening.

But they say the southern areas will get some rain. The weather is changing so fast and they now say the Indian Ocean is warming again and with it we will get more rain.

I gave a talk to a group of people from the University of the Third Age, and they were very interested in my research.

Since last update I have had several new victims contact me with various stages of wound break down, from White tail spider bites One gentleman from New Port Beach California reporting his was a Recluse spider bite. he “Cundell Cup Day” held 24th September 2015 was hosted by the ladies of the Yankalilla Branch. This is a bi-annual Handicraft Competition where members from the other branches in the group all come together with their handicrafts.

The Community Church hall was used to display and judge the branches handicrafts.

The Sanders Hall was used for morning tea, talks by guest speakers and a pooled luncheon. The morning session was enjoyed by all followed by the delicious luncheon, The winner of the Cundell Cup was won by the Yankalilla Branch.

Maureen Stone from the Yankalilla Branch won the “One Woman’s Work” consisting of 4 items of needlework and the “Most outstanding needlework” item from the cup entries.

“Congratulations Maureen” Our October general meeting was poorly attended owing to other commitments by the members, it was decided to postpone our guest speaker to another date.

Birthday Celebrations in November will be the viewing of a film followed by a luncheon at a hotel in Victor. Our Christmas Celebrations in December is a luncheon at the Rockview Café.

As this is the last report for 2015, the members wish the Editor and readers a Joyous Christmas with family and friends and a safe holiday season.

ankalilla’s history being relatively short the Yankalilla museum does not contain objects as ancient as the Rosetta stone nor as exotic as an Egyptian mummy, but it does contain significant objects that help preserve and explain the past. Among its collection of historical objects one stands out, not merely because of its size. This unusual museum piece is a church!

Parsons, the church started out as a tin mission hut. In those times the local roads were no more than deeply rutted cart tracks which, in winter, were almost impassable. Because of this the first meetings held by the early settlers to discuss the building of the church were held on nights that were as near as possible to the full moon. In those days of self-reliance - there were no handouts such as grants or subsidies - the cost of the building, about $100,was borne by those who would worship there. First congregations consisted of the Parsons, Crossman, Farall, Sweetman, Prouse and Cootes families.

Apart from the organ, St. Thomas’s furniture and fittings were donated by its rectors and parishioners. Among these items was a Reredos (the ornamental screen behind the altar) which was originally imported from Scotland for the Barr-Smith family, one of whom was an early parishioner, and a portable baptismal font which the church’s first rector, Archdeacon Morse, carried in a leather bag when he travelled on horseback from church to church. Some of the church’s history can be read in the Vestry book, a copy of which is kept in the church for visitors to peruse. The book’s weekly hand-written entries, recording a few Sundays when services were cancelled due to bad weather or bushfires, reflect the long, bumpy journey to church - for those families fortunate enough to own a cart or a buggy. Others made the journey on foot. The entries also reflect a shortage of ready cash, the amount in the collection plate on one Sunday being three pence. In those early days the parishioners e xperienced many hardships. During the drought of 1885/86 the Bank of South Australia was forced to suspend trading for a short time, wheat yields declined, and there were falls in wool and butter prices. At the same time silver and copper prices also fell. South Australia was very dependent on these. Rising above these hardships St. Thomas’s parishioners faithfully attended the regular services, and those which celebrated baptisms and harvest thanksgivings. In 1911 they commemorated the coronation of King George V, and in 1925 the death of Queen Alexandra.

minutes touch on church upkeep, the painting budget in 1903 being two guineas. A few pages on, the entry for 25th April, 1915, asked each family attending services to guarantee one shilling a week towards church funds.

(A poignant date when we wonder how many families had fathers and sons on the beaches at Gallipoli.)

Later, one of the parishioners involved in the church’s maintenance was Wilf Roads. Not only did he make donations to the church, he was a skilled carpenter and saw to the routine maintenance and improvements.

It was Wilf who, in 1967, repaired the church following its narrow escape from a bushfire. The last service was held on 23rd December, 1990.

On and off until 1927 the church had been used as a government school, a common practice then. It was also used as a community hall where Saturday night dances were held. Following its closure in 1990 the building was brought on a low loader to its present site in the grounds of the Yankalilla museum. Its old site on the Inman Valley road is marked by a cairn 4.7km east of Inman Valley, the cairn built with stones from the church’s original foundations.

Preserving “The Olives” YANKALILLA COMMUNITY LIBRARY and YANKALILLA & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC. present Preserving “The Olives” “The Olives” is a state heritage listed house, situated on Salt Creek Road (near the corner of Doctor’s Hill Road).

It was built about 1860 by William Sharrad, who lived there for many years. In later years the house fell into ruin, until bought in 1976 by Mr. and Mrs von Schramek, who began its restoration. Today it is a graceful dwelling with superb gardens. The current owner, Mr Mark Day, has kindly agreed to give this talk on “The Olives” and its garden, which has been featured in the magazine “SA Gardens”.

y the time this is published the Normanville Sailing Club will have well and truly started the 20152016 season (weather permitting) with our first week of sailing starting on Sunday November 1st. During the winter we have had our Annual Dinner at the Courthouse Café (a great evening that Tony Proctor has already commented on in the letters to the Editor) and our Annual General Meeting at the Links Lady Bay (also a lovely evening – thanks to the staff for spoiling us and making a comfortable area available for our, at times rowdy, meeting). We are blessed with convivial meeting places in our part of the world.

At the AGM the Commodore (Barry Hutt) thanked the club’s team of volunteers and noted the hard work they do to ensure safe and enjoyable racing and efficient management of the club.

He extended particular thanks to Steve Rogers, Gavin Schubert and Darryl Jackman, Tony Proctor and Jerry Moller, and Barbara Matthews for their fine efforts on Sundays. George Reeves also received special mention for his efforts behind the scenes. Overall it had been a good year, with the weather Gods kind to us. Shelley was thanked for the new club racing flags.

We are all itching for the season to start and look forward to making our presence obvious on the Normanville beach front.

The club conducts races from 2pm every Sunday during the season (weather permitting) with sailors arriving after midday and rigging their boats. We welcome the involvement of anyone who has an interest in sailing, wishes to learn how to sail or to provide support to the sailing activities. Yankalilla Ladies Probus Ladies Probus Meeting 23rd September 2015 embers who attended the meeting were treated to a talk by a wonderfully vivacious and vibrant speaker Gail Roediger. Her talk outlined a program funded by Allkids which is based in Cambodia and provides support to poor communities, helping overcome the hurdles that prevent children from receiving education.

Gail has been retired from teaching for 15 years and an opportunity to visit

Cambodia has changed her life. She speaks highly of the friendly nature of the people and their lifestyle and their great appreciation of her help with education. Gail sees her role as providing training for young people who will be future teachers of children, offering ideas, teaching methodology and introducing games as a way of teaching English. The children are very responsive and are learning through playing games and having fun. They develop an identity and feeling of self worth.

Gail stressed that the program does not undermine the education program which the government offers but adds greatly to the overall development of the children who are able to access it. Their program provides a transport for those children who live on the outskirts of the town. Those children who are forest dwellers and cannot reach a school, or those who work on the dumps, sifting through rubbish, their timber houses embedded in rubbish.

Not all aspects of their society are favourable. There are some adults who use children for their own ends, making them sort plastic, cardboard and paper from the dump, taking the money the children get for the rubbish. There are also agencies which claim to help orphans but they are fraudulently collecting money for themselves.

The small school is in the coastal town of Sihanoukville. Over 400 hundred children attend the Allkids Learning Centre to supplement their public school attendance. The town has a natural beauty being on the coast but there are still rubbish dumps and rubbish everywhere. The local people seem oblivious to its ugliness or the risk of germs. The children appear to be healthy and have a diet which is nutritious, with fresh fruit and vegetables grown and sold at the markets. Chicken bones and fish make the basis of stock to which vegetables are added. Gail teaches them the importance of washing their hands and basic hygiene when they come to school.

The school was founded by an Australian man who originally went to Cambodia to build the Geraldine Cox orphanages. When he was working there he made friends with some of the young labourers and started to help them learn new skills. He recognised a great need

for the youth of the town to have opportunities to learn. English is their ticket to a better life.

Gail has observed that the adult women work hard, cooking three meals a day, washing clothes, growing food and yet they have few if any recreational skills.

They cannot read, sew or draw. When they finish their work they just sit. Their children growing up and learning to read and speak English will have a richer and more rewarding life thanks to people like Gail and many other people who support this project.

Gail spends a month each year in Cambodia and describes it as a ‘bubble of happiness’.
