Lucy Brightens Up The Town

L

ucy Cawthorne arrived in Normanville from Melbourne on Thursday 9th April to begin working on a streetscape in the main street, as part of the Festival Fleurieu.

She began drawing up the Bungala Café mural in Cheeseman Street on Thursday afternoon and completed the final details late Monday afternoon before she was due to fly back to Melbourne early Tuesday morning.

Lucy has worked as a street artist in Darwin for the past 3 years in between fulfilling her duties as Manager of the Darwin Airport Hotel. She relocated to Melbourne late last year and now works in hospitality in Richmond, finding

moments to continue her art pursuits in between shifts.

Lucy is the daughter of local artist Barb Pettigrew and grew up in a nurturing artistic environment from which she developed an appreciation and understanding of drawing and painting techniques. After finishing school she pursued her interest in aerosol art and learnt techniques in application of spray paint from a number of experienced mentors.

Lucy loves her craft and works as often as she can to improve on her techniques and skills.

She was invited to paint a mural for the festival and volunteered her time and expertise without payment to complete the beautiful mural that has

he Women with Fibre meeting for April was for consolidation of some of the techniques we have learned in our recent workshops, or anything else people wanted to work on. Our meetings are always friendly and give opportunities for exchange of ideas or questions to experts about our various problems in our craft.

l e u r i e u W e st B u s i n e s s Association (FWBA) commenced as The Normanville Traders Association in March 2008 when a group of business owners in the town decided to come together to provide support to each other and to new businesses. The Association became an incorporated body in 2009 and in June 2013 changed it’s name to Fleurieu West Business Association to have a broader reach and focus.

The current Management Committee, elected at the 2014 AGM, is drawn from a range of business types, including re ta i l, hospit a li ty , pri ma ry industries and business services from across the whole district.

One of the key activities for FWBA will be to hold networking events for local business owners. These events will provide a great opportunity for business owners to meet, socialize and discuss issues.

There will also be a bi-monthly eNews put out by FWBA that will, amongst other things, profile local businesses that are members of the

The first networking event for the year is being held on Wednesday May 27th at The Court House Café, 52 Main Street, Normanville. Guest Speaker will be Nick Vrees from Fleurieu Accountants who will speak on implications of the Federal Budget for small businesses. Once details are finalised all local business owners will be invited to this event.

With a lot happening across the region at present it’s important that local businesses have the opportunity to be represented by a collective voice through a credible business association. Evidence from other districts shows that the local business sector has a much greater chance of having a positive impact when represented by an active Association. The Committee is keen that the membership represents both the diversity of business types and the geographical

ello Readers, Happy Mothers’ Day to all the mums this month.

I may have finally got my internet connection fixed! It only took about 7 weeks and two visits by technicians. Not to mention many, many phone calls to my service provider.

Just when I thought things were looking good, the Yankalilla Council had their internet connection cut, right when we were getting this issue finalised, so with all the various hassles, it ends up being a couple of days late for hard copy distribution. If you are looking online then you are among the first to read this.

Festival Fleurieu is all over, until next time around. By all reports, it was very successful and if you were out there enjoying the various attractions then you were part of that success.

The wrap up is on page 8 and 9.

What else is happening? There is always something on the horizon. The Wirrina Bluegrass Festival is scheduled for September 46 so look out for more information on this over the coming issues. The Yankalilla Show is on

Normanville Sailing Club

L

ight winds have been the order of the day since last month’s club update but we have had some acceptable sailing days and no ‘blow outs’. The photo of the month comes from the end of March (a very light day as you can see).

But over Easter we had a good sailing day for our second annual Race around the wave generator which has sunk off Carrickalinga. The race was won by Peter Nicholson in his Mosquito catamaran and, since it was Peter who suggested the race in the first place, this seemed appropriate! We wonder how many more opportunities we will have to conduct this event?

A few weeks before Easter, a photographer from Fleurieu West Connect, spent the afternoon filming the club activities and one of the outcomes was an excellent short video about the Normanville Sailing Club and its activities. It is available as a link off the Fleurieu West Connect website at https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=S2IZeyI53Os. This really shows the flavour of the club and its activities as well as featuring many of the club members. Personally, I was glad I was not featured as, on that day, my rudder mountings on one pontoon pulled out, filling it with water and my boat sank. I am grateful to Steve Rogers for all of the work he put in to make it sailable the next week – the club would be hard pressed to find someone more dedicated to keeping everyone on the water. Also, a big thanks to Peter and Racquel from the Normanville Hotel for recommending that a segment on the Normanville Sailing Club be included on the Fleurieu West Connect

By the time you read this our sailing season will have ended, but we will be back on the first Sunday in November for the 2015-16 season.

The club conducts races from 2pm every Sunday during the season (weather permitting) with sailors arriving after midday and rigging their boats. We welcome the involvement of anyone who has an interest in sailing, wishes to learn how to sail or to provide support to the sailing activities. Yankalilla Ladies Probus Club

resident Brenda Mallabone welcomed everyone on the 25th March and a short general meeting was held prior to the AGM. Past President Yvonne Scrutton was awarded Life Membership in recognition of her ongoing contribution to The Ladies Probus Club. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted. The AGM followed, chaired by Yvonne Scrutton. Members of the committee were thanked for their hard work, especially Brenda Mallabone who has done a great job as President. All positions were declared open. Nominations were presented and seconded and a new committee duly elected.

Modern advances in technology have provided a way to replicate the brain of an individual using MRI scans and three dimensional photography. A nylon skull can be created which replicates the patient’s skull enabling the surgeon to plan the process of reconstruction and explain to the parents how the surgery will be performed.

This process is reconstructive surgery, not cosmetic surgery and may require several operations spread over months or years. The outcome can be life changing for the individual concerned and enable him or her to have a near normal life.

The talk was inspirational and we sincerely thank Bronwyn for sharing with our Probus group.

Denise read the minutes of the previous meeting after which a short general meeting followed. The future of our club was discussed in view of falling membership and people going away during the Winter months. After some discussion it was decided by a vote that the Ladies Probus continue in its present form for the coming year. It was agreed that key roles which are temporarily vacated due to holidays be filled by other members.

Lyn Trigg then welcomed our guest speaker, Bronwyn Chant who presented a most inspirational talk about the work of the Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide which was founded by Professor David in 1984. Bronwyn talked about the ‘life changing’ work which the Unit performs and how it all started when a plastic surgeon had a vision to make a difference to the lives of babies and children born with congenital craniofacial disfigurement.

Today, Craniofacial Australia is a centre of excellence with a multi disciplinary team of over forty surgeons with nurses, speech pathologists, radiologists, social workers and psychologists.

Festival Fleurieu 2015

What a Swell Party This Was!

F

estival Fleurieu 2015 started with a party and ended with a party!

What a swell time we all had! Many ticketed events were SOLD OUT weeks before the event with waiting lists. 13 Studio artists welcomed visitors to see their work and reported back that they were delighted with the number of people interested in their art.

Visitors enjoyed travelling distances to espy the amazingly creative ‘doorscape’ doors that formed the foundation of this Festival.

Young people had stories told to them in a giant leafy sea dragon or were engaged in an environmental workshop in Banksia Park or learnt new skills at street art workshops and artists learnt about botanical art from Gilbert Dashorst!

For musicians, there was a variety of musical events to entertain us, my family and I in particular loved kicking up our heels at the Normanville Hotel on the night Bruce Hancock and his septet gigged for us!

We were in awe of the skill level of the jazz musicians – including Bob Jeffreys playing soprano and alto saxophones at the same time!

Classical, jazz and student pianists spent many an hour ‘tinkling the ivories’ on our beautiful street piano located for this Festival outside the chemist in Normanville and painted so brilliantly by artist Barb Pettigrew!

Many of us were ‘persuaded’ or otherwise to take a viewpoint at “The Great Debate” and listened passionately to ‘passionate philosophers’.

We visited quilters, embroiderers, jewellers, beer brewers and drove ourselves around tree trails and selfie discovery tours!

We enjoyed poetry and feasted in a caravan park!

you to our community who fully supported and embraced our endeavours for this Festival.

I thank the amazing group of new friends that I have had the privilege of working with on this Festival. Every single person on the Festival Team enthusiastically and generously contributed their ideas and time, always with grace, to ensure that we all had a remarkable time!

he Festival Fleurieu is over, the singing's been sung, the arts have been viewed, the dancing's been swung, the eating's been done, the talk's been debated!!

Now it's time to acknowledge and thank, to reflect and enjoy the positive fallout from a Festival Fleurieu that has attracted record crowds, sell-out e ve n ts , a m azi n g s t re e ts cap e, community involvement and an opening Fiesta! to rock Normanville.

The generosity and support of festival partners has ensured not only that the festival was able to run but that we enjoyed major events under the Festival Fleurieu banner; our Festival Partners took principal, major, premium and prime roles in program and on-line. These Partners were supported by platinum, gold and silver donors as well as those who 'came to the party' to professionally move a piano or organise the traders' part in the street party or...

To raise funds for an operating festival budget, the One in a Hundred Chance lottery relied on the generosity of a spectrum of accommodation providers to entice punters to buy tickets with a chance to win one of ten luxury holidays.

We thank you all.

To begin to thank those who put in the volunteer hours would need a long list indeed but I'm sure readers

appreciate that there has to be those who look after the pragmatics, like insurance; the artistic, like the streetscape; the practical, like placing the doors around the district, putting up (and taking down) the staging; the daring, like raising the bunting to flutter over a street; the organisational, like programming; the promotional, like parading banners and the Dorff mascot on New year's Eve. It's been a long journey and now over so quickly it seems, as Autumn heads for winter hibernation. Festival Fleurieu 2015

World War I poems well received in garden I n spite of the light drizzle, 55 persons gathered to hear Peter Fitzgerald and Terry McEwen read a series of World War I poems, selected and linked by Peter to reveal the horrors of battle as well as the patriotism. It was a moving occasion, but there was a glass of champagne with sausage roll beforehand and a log fire afterwards…much different from the mud in the war trenches.

Organised by Books and Words Group as a Festival Fleurieu event it

was one of two poetry sessions offered in the Yankalilla garden of Eliza Cottage owned by Peter and his wife Lorraine.

Success for Inman Quilters

eautiful autumn weather greeted visitors to the Inman Quilters 5th Biennial Quilt Exhibition held at the Inman Valley Memorial Hall over the weekend of 11th–13th April 2015.

And visit us they did!! Over 670 people came through the door to see the beautiful work that was on display, in particular the award winning quilts as judged by the Quilters Guild of South Australia.

Award winners were: • Carole Hewett of Victor Harbor won Best Exhibit (category by one person) for her quilt titled “Climbing the Mountain”.

• Helen Scholfield of Inman Valley was Best Exhibit (category by more than one person) for her quilt titled “Civil War Bride”.

• Sophia Reynolds of Victor Harbor won the “People’s Choice” award for her quilt titled “Jacobean Journey”.

As always, apart from the quilts that each member enters into the exhibition, there is a “challenge”, and this year being the Centenary of Anzac, the challenge was to design a lap quilt approx 50 inches square and somewhere on the quilt, there had to be a red poppy. A total of 22 quilts were entered into the Challenge and Pat Shipley of Normanville was

awarded “Best Challenge Quilt”.

These quilts will now be gifted to the Fleurieu Peninsula Legacy for distribution to Legacy widows in the area.

With a record number of people there was excellent support for the Raffle Quilts, all proceeds of which will be donated to our nominated charities:the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group, Inman Valley CFS and the Commando Welfare Trust.

Winners of the Raffle Quilts were: 1st prize Jan Bohnsack of Victor Harbor and 2nd prize Y Fitzell of Hallet Cove.

As well as viewing the beautiful array of quilts and partaking of the delicious food in the Quilter’s Kitchen, viewers were quite taken with the stage display which commemorated the Spirit of Anzac 1915 – 2015. Inman Quilters would like to thank the Victor Harbor RSL, The South Coast Choral Society, and Mr Graham McEwens for their generosity with the items loaned.

And last, but not least, Inman Quilters would like to thank all those people who supported our efforts through the purchase of Raffle tickets and those who were able to come across to the Inman Valley and enjoy the Show.

Without you we would not have achieved our success.

Forced Landing

ason Mundy looked down at his instruments, checking the routine cycle of gauges and dials that signified the overall health of his Piper Comanche PA 24.

Altitude, 1500 feet, engine temperature was in the green. Oil pressure, in the green, Carburettor heat engaged. Fuel tanks were both full at 60 gallons, 30 gallons per wing, having just refuelled and taken off from home base.

Approximately another 4-5 hours flying time at current speed of 110 knots.

These constant checks were as routine as brushing his teeth in the morning, but Jason knew that they were also a lifesaving routine as they could get you out of trouble a lot quicker by knowing early, if there was a problem.

Although it was an old aircraft, it was still a very reliable and steady workhorse for the training and pleasure of light aircraft flying. Jason looked out the window to his left and noted an advancing rain squall, still some distance away but it never paid to dismiss such events in the sky as they could change with stunning ease.

Today’s flight was a trip to the coastal town of Sedgwick, about an hour’s flight to the south along the coast. Jason’s Dad had flown down this morning to drop off an aircraft for a client and do some

training with him, while he was there.

Jason was going to pick up his father later this afternoon and then fly them both back home to Woodville.

It was a great route to fly as there was always some freighter or trawler making its way to the Port town of Sedgwick and sometimes there were porpoises surfing on their bow waves which was amazing to watch from up here at 1500 feet.

Jason’s course took him over the ocean for a little way, but not so far that he would have to change some of the things that he did whilst flying over water. The air traffic controllers were very strict about light craft flying over the ocean and with a recent spate of light aircraft disappearing whilst doing short over water flights, were taking no chances.

Looking down as Jason flew, he spied an old freighter making its way north along the coast, leaving an oily slick behind it on the surface of the waves. Grumbling to himself about water pollution and the destruction to fish and reef life, Jason fished around for his binoculars in the side pouch.

“Indy Maru” swam into his view as he focused on the rear of the boat and tried to hold the binoculars steady. Registered in Korea. Ok this was going to be interesting, flipping his radio transmitter switch on the steering yolk Jason said

“Sedgwick control this is Papa Victor 24.”

“Papa Victor 24, this is Sedgwick Control, come in.”

Jason replied, “ Yes Sedgwick control I would like to report an oil slick wake on a freighter named “Indy Maru” registered North Korea. Heading North 340 degrees approximately 8 miles west of the coast near Hampstead Village, over.”

There was silence for few moments then Sedgwick came back, “Papa Victor, message received and conveyed to National Marine Patrol. Thanks for the notice, that you Jason? Over.”

Jason replied, “Roger that Sedgwick, and affirmative. ETA your location 40 minutes, over.”

The Sedgwick controller replied, “Roger that, you will have cloud at angels 7000, winds at 8 knots from the south east and if your route is over water, you need to climb to flight level 3000. You know the rules Jason.”

Jason Replied, “Sedgwick control, Roger that, Papa Victor 24 climbing to angels 3000, departing Woodville control, over.”

“Roger that Jason, and safe flight.

Sedgwick out.”

Jason continued to monitor the ship as he slowly climbed to 3000 feet and drew away, Jason then glanced over to his left again. That storm front was getting a lot closer and seemed to be building quite quickly. Looking at his air speed indicator, Jason noticed the speed had dropped a little, so pushing the throttle lever forward; he increased the power and watched the needle slowly climb back to 110 knots. Hmmm, going to have

to watch that he thought as he glanced around once more to check his air space.

Always a good thing, his dad had said, to never take for granted that you were alone up there in the sky. Commercial traffic, training flights for new pilots and the occasional rebel who didn’t post flight plans and flew unregistered craft, mainly the home built ultralights. They were always popping into the vicinity and you had to pay attention.

20 minutes later into the flight as Jason checked his instruments again, two things jumped out at him. His airspeed had dropped to 100 and the temperature of the motor was climbing…..Uh Oh. Jason looked around quickly to reassure himself that if there was any engine malfunction he could still make a safe landing, the coast was about 3 miles off his starboard wing, so he could glide there if the motor stopped, just, provided the storm didn’t catch him. It seemed to be passing to his rear, but that could change anytime soon and he had been fighting the thermals coming of the surface of the sea and the base of the cloud formation for the last 10 minutes.

Thankfully he was still tracking on his course but it might be prudent to alter course a bit and bring himself a little closer to the coast, just in case. Making a slight adjustment with his direction by pushing on the pedals, Jason edged the plane closer to the land and reestablished his trim for the change in airspeed that was continuing to happen.

Jason looked behind him and noticed that the storm was more of a passing squall and seemed to be altering its intensity, much to his relief and then a cough from

the motor caught his attention. Quickly scanning his instruments, Jason saw that the engine temperature was right up, nearing the red, his oil pressure was dropping and the altimeter and airspeed indicator was showing that he was losing both altitude and speed. This was now turning into a real emergency.

Flipping on his radio Jason said “Pan Pan Pan Sedgwick control this is Papa Victor 24, request immediate assist, engine is losing power, have dropped to angels 2000 and airspeed dropping rapidly, Over” Sedgwick Control replied, “Papa Victor 24 received, change to channel 16 and state location and direction over.”

Jason replied as he flipped the radio transceiver to channel 16 the international emergency channel, and scanned the nearing coastline looking for a place to set down. Despite his best efforts to cool the motor by opening the ventilation flaps, enriching the fuel mixture and ensuring the carburettor heat was on to reduce any icing on the fuel system, he was still losing power and the engine temperature was in the red. It was time to turn the motor off before it started a fire in the engine compartment.

Things were getting very busy right now.

Flipping his transponder to the emergency Channel and changing channels for his radio, Jason said “Sedgwick Control, I am about 1 mile west off coast near Ruxton Manor, descending 1000 feet and am shutting down engine as temperature is critical.

Will be looking to land near or on Ruxton moor, over” Sedgwick replied, “Roger that copied all and will alert authorities to effect rescue.

Good luck. Sedgwick out to you,” on a different frequency allocated for general

broadcast at their location, Sedgwick control said, “All aircraft in vicinity Ruxton Moors, be advised we have an in air emergency, an aircraft is on approach to a forced landing on Ruxton Moor or its vicinity, any sightings of the landing, please report immediately to coordinate rescue, Sedgwick Out.” By now Jason was very busy, focussed on locating a section of the approaching moor that he might safely land on, breathing a sigh of relief as he crossed the coast line still about 800 feet up, he began his emergency check list of shutting everything down and concentrating on just flying the plane.

Up ahead as he got closer to the moor a section of the plain opened up to reveal an area light dotted with small bushes but far enough apart to give Jason some chance of safely putting the aircraft down on to the surface without crashing.

As Jason adjusted the flaps, rolled the trim to compensate and checked his harness, he switched the fuel off and killed the motor completely. The silence, except for the low whistle of the wind over the wings was all that kept him company as he descended the last couple hundred feet. Keeping the aircraft as stable as he could, Jason lined up with a clear patch that came into view, opting to put her down there and hopefully get a decent roll out through the low bushes beyond the clearing, just like practice, he thought, except we won’t be powering on again and climbing out to repeat the exercise. Jason took one final glance around and settled into the chair to meet the coming bumpy landing.

stop in the clearing. Bumping and shuddering through the bushes that lay beyond the clearing eventually Jason was able to bring the plane to a shuddering halt. With steam rising from the overheated motor, and the ticking and creaking of overstressed metal filling his eyes and ears, Jason flipped off the seatbelt and climbed over the co-pilots seat to exit through the door. The one problem was there was only one entry and exit on these planes and if that door was stuck, then you had a problem.

Luckily in this case it was ok and Jason exited the plane successfully and climbed off the wing to walk away to a safe distance.

Jason surveyed the downed plane and thought to himself, well any crash you can walk away from is a good one, now to get some help. Jason pulled out his mobile phone and keyed the switch to turn it on. After it had booted up, he noted there was just one bar of signal, just on the edge of a cell. Well I hope that’s enough, he thought as he dialled the Sedgwick Airport. Asking to be put through to the control tower and after a minute, he spoke with one of the controllers there and explained his situation and location. They reassured Jason that help was on the way and if he needed anything for himself. Jason said that he was fine and would wait for the rescue crew near the plane, but pointed out that he wasn’t sure about the possibility of an engine fire as the motor was currently steaming and a fire appliance might be necessary. The controller said he would pass that on and then hung up.

Jason walked a little further away up a slight rise to see if he could identify anything close to his location. In the distance behind a tree line there looked like a church steeple poking its point up over the tree line, and basing that as his navigational point did some mental arithmetic and decided he had landed about 4 miles south east of the village Ruxton, in which the Manor had been named after.

Finding a small rock to lean against Jason settled in for the wait and was rewarded a little later with the sound of sirens coming towards him over the moor. Standing up and dusting himself off, Jason realised that he had taken a bit more of a jolt when landing than what he had thought. There were a few aches and pains in his back and shoulders that he hadn’t realised before, so in a way, Jason mused, he had not come off unscathed after all. A little later a fire truck, ambulance and police car rolled up over the rise and made their way down to

where Jason stood near the still steaming plane. The fire crew fell out of the fire truck and quickly dowsed down the surrounding bush and the nose of the plane, leaving it covered in a mountain of foam. As Jason watched with growing concern, the ambulance pulled up nearby and a crew exited the rough terrain emergency vehicle and came over.

Taking Jason to the rear of the vehicle and sitting him down, the lady paramedic began to attend to Jason’s injuries. Jason hadn’t noticed the cut on his arm and the skinned knee, but he guessed that he had been a little distracted of late.

A little later a police officer came over and taking out his note book began to question Jason about the incident. Jason began to tell his story as the nurse continued to work on him.

A little later they gave Jason a lift back into town where his father was waiting to collect him at the police station. Jason’s father, having been informed of the incident by firstly the Sedgwick control tower, whilst still flying his client around and then later the police. Jason’s father cut short his training flight explaining to his client the ensuing family emergency that had occurred and promised to reconvene the training at a later date.

Putting the plane down at Sedgwick airport, he parked the plane in the hanger and caught a taxi to the nearby Village of Ruxton. Jason’s father was told at the police station that Jason had survived the landing, apart from a few cuts and bruises, and would be joining them shortly.

A little later Jason walked into the police station with the constable that had taken his report and was greeted by a very relieved father.

Dad said “Jason are you Ok son?” Jason replied, “Yes dad I’m ok, a bit shaken, but I’m fine. I’m not sure what happened but I think the plane is going to be ok too, The undercarriage doesn’t seem to be broken or bent, but I think I avoided an engine fire by getting it down as quick as I could. Sorry about this dad but I don’t know why the motor died.”

Jason’s Father replied, “Don’t worry about that now, I’m just glad you’re safe and sound and were able to walk away from the landing. We’ll find out later what the problem was with the plane and how it happened.”

any years ago when I was a child, these outlets of cheap but, good quality items to help families out were unknown.

Instead, the churches and various organisations such as Red Cross, Salvation Army, among others were there for the poor, destitute and those who were suffering bad times.

This need was particularly necessary during world wars and the services were the only avenue for food, clothing, and items needed to sustain many households.

There is always need for assistance through whatever disasters, whether man made, weather, and any type of catastrophe.

Over the years, the need for charity has grown immensely and organisations have also grown to accommodate the less fortunate in our society.

There is never enough funds to share and there is a limit as to how individuals can assist with donations of what they can spare, hence the ‘opportunity shop’ label is well known both nationally and internationally.

Of course, if these organisations had to pay wages and everything that goes with staff, then there would not be a large amount of funds to distribute to the needy.

This is where the volunteer armies have come forward to give their time, be it a few hours a week to a few days a week without any thought of remuneration.

Having been an op shop volunteer for many years now, it sounds a bit soppy to say I look forward to my stint each week, but to me it is my regular outing.

Apart from being there for sales and accepting donations from the public, I get to meet folk from local, interstate, overseas and just out of town, some I am corresponding to, especially those who themselves donate time to a chosen charity.

Sometimes I get the opportunity to use my few words I know in Greek, French, German and speak of times when I visited their countries years ago.

The children sometimes make me feel very sad, as their parents come in and are grateful for any assistance we can give them, times are tough and their lives are a constant struggle to manage to feed, clothe and send them to school.

Most op shop organisations are all in the same predicament - wondering how they will pay the rent for their premises, hope that the donations received are of an acceptable quality and that the

cheapest price can be put on them.

Occasionally, not often we receive donations in garbage bags, we know at a glance whether they are going to be suitable or not, rubbish bin or an iron and spruce up for the shop. If a bag comes in and it is lumpy and bulging, we instantly know it is someone’s rubbish only fit to turf out.

It is so sad that people will do this, considering that they would not even look at clothing in such a state, let alone buy it.

Thankfully, this is not frequent and we all try to keep our sense of humour, as we know the next day we will have someone come in and say to us, ‘dear you won’t have to wash these, we have washed and ironed them’!

So please keep on dropping anything you no longer need to the ‘op shops’ – they are truly appreciated, especially when you can see the smiles on the customers’ faces!

O

n Easter Sunday we were invited to a barbeque celebration at some friend's at the Wirrina Caravan Park.

What a great surprise to see this park full to it's current allowance with tents, caravans and people enjoying themselves. This campground used to be a popular one before being closed down by previous owners of Wirrina.

The new owners, Ben and Holly Taylor, and daughter Millie, have worked hard to make this camping ground a great place to stay.

The kids enjoyed a fun-filled free Easter egg hunt, organized in age groups so all got a fair share. They were then treated to a sausage sizzle which was run off with games on the oval.

We met the owners and had a chat with them and they told us their story which is worth sharing (below) for lovers of our area.

Marg Hancock Normanville “Taking a Sunday drive, looking for greener pastures for our Clydesdale Horses, it was suggested we take a look at the Caravan Park at Wirrina Cove.

Instantly we admired the gorgeous valley and the quaint little Stone Buildings that lined the driveway.

Immediately we made an offer on the property as it was love at first sight! I grew up in Port Willunga and had seen the ups and downs that had plagued Wirrina Cove over the years. My heart ruled the purchase of this property and even though it was terribly ‘run down,’ both Holly and I had resigned ourselves that if the Caravan Park could not be a financially viable proposition then we had a beautiful private place to live!

Luckily my gut instinct was correct and after 18 months of hard work, we now know that the “Wirrina Cove Holiday Park” is here to stay and is actually doing really well financially. For the first time since we purchased the property, we were booked to capacity over the Long Weekend at Easter and wow, did we have a great time. The families we hosted were lovely! We

Doggy friendly

s a regular patron to local cafés I am grateful to those who provide "doggy" drinking bowls even though I rarely take my pooch to these venues, however I did notice that one café goes the extra mile.

Not so long ago I was having lunch at the beachfront café Normanville as were many other patrons when I observed a lady giving her dog a drink of water. The dog was drinking from a blue "table service" glass - one which is the same for serving cold drinks and water to patrons so I raised my concern with a staff member.

On leaving I mentioned my concern to the staff member again who informed me that she had mentioned this to the

other staff member, (presumably the cook). The staff member informed me that she was told that the lady "always does it".

Even though dishes and glasses get washed, being of "old school" I think pets should having eating and drinking containers specifically for themselves so perhaps a few extra "doggy" water vessels wouldn't go astray.

say let the buck stop where it belongs! As a local I also agree with Mr Locker and many other locals, who I hear continually complain about the attitude and service at the Normanville Hotel. I feel that some of the staff do, do their best to give friendly service under impossible circumstance. There is only one person responsible for these issues and that is the Manager. Maybe some better customer service and management skills are needed. Maybe a total boycott would wake them up to reality, no customers, NO HOTEL.

More Green Army projects on the ground in the Mayo electorate

T

he Australian Government’s Green Army programme is gaining momentum across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island, with another three projects on the ground in the Alexandrina, Yankalilla and Kangaroo Island council districts.

The Green Army programme provides opportunities for young Australians aged 17-24 years to gain training and experience in environmental and heritage conservation fields and explore careers in conservation management, while participating in projects that generate real benefits for the environment.

Through the programme, teams of ten (up to nine participants and one team supervisor) are deployed to projects lasting 20-26 weeks across Australia to help communities deliver local conservation outcomes.

These participants will not only be generating real environment and conservation benefits for our community, but they will be gaining valuable practical training and experience to help them prepare for the workforce or further training and improve their career opportunities.

The projects that will be delivered over the next six months include:

Implementing the Southern Fleurieu Coastal Action Plan Project Sponsor: District Council of Yankalilla Service Provider: Workskil This Green Army project will address conservation priorities across the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Participants will help conserve the natural coastal heritage, monitor the vulnerable Hooded Plover, continue revegetation programs to improve habitat for butterflies and to control problem weeds. The focus will be on the two highest priority areas, the Normanville Heritage listed sand dunes and the Cape Jervis Coastal Reserves.

Enhancing Kangaroo Island ecosystems from coast to coast – Project 1 Project Sponsor: Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board Service Provider: Workskil This project involves improving the condition and extent of native vegetation and protecting nationally threatened and regionally significant species across Kangaroo Island. Teams will gain skills in seed collection, propagation and revegetation while restoring a threatened ecological community.

“I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news,” he said as he surveyed the worried faces.

It's an experimental procedure, very risky but it is the only hope.

Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. A man unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask.

“Why is the male brain so much more?”

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group.

Dive at Second Valley

n March 29th, Reef Watch SA ran a snorkelling and scuba diving fun day at Second Valley. The weather and sea conditions were perfect for the many community participants who enjoyed the day. Marine biologists Sue Murray -Jones, Mike Bossley and Alex Gaut were on hand to identify any weird and wonderful critters discovered. A focus for the day was looking for marine pests such as European fan worm and native species of conservation concern such as leafy sea dragons and blue devils. Participants on the day enjoyed learning about marine life from marine experts during guided tours. All participants were provided with free identification cards as part of our ‘Feral or In Peril’ program.

Highlights for the day included reports of several juvenile blue devils spotted in cracks and crevices along the coast. Other interesting finds included many colonies of Zoanthus robustus, a colonial

Natural Insect Repellents

any people are concerned about the use of chemicals when dealing with insect problems. Luckily, there are many natural options – however the bottom line is that nothing works better than a good ‘hit’ of chemicals to solve an insect problem. Chemically based insect applications are specifically created and tested to deal with the problem head-on. But there is, of course, a price to pay for using chemicals – in the home, for our health and for the environment. So if you’re really determined to follow the natural approach prepare yourself for the fact that it will require some extra time and effort to deal with the problem – but well worth it.

It is a little irresponsible to have a complete ‘eradication and annihilation’ approach to insect problems considering that insects are just as much a vital part of planetary habitation as humans – although insect habitation is a lot less disruptive toward the planet! We must all find a way to live on this planet together in harmony – so it might be better to encourage the little beings to take their business elsewhere as opposed to death and destruction.

First - Remove the Cause: Insects congregate where this is a food or habitation source. Removal of the attraction will do much to solve the problem.

Cover compost bins, seal water tanks, remove

water sources, give attention to cleanliness, use sealed packaging when storing food, close access points (doors, windows and openings), etc. are the first steps.

Ants: Boiling water or hydrated lime (from the hard-ware store) over their nest will ‘encourage’ them to move elsewhere. Moth balls inside pantyhose hung in the bin will discourage fossicking ants. They will (apparently) not cross a chalk line – draw a thick chalk line around their usual haunts to keep them under control. Talcum powder will also discourage ants. (Some ‘natural’ remedies suggest using borax – however borax is toxic in large doses for children and pets – for that reason don’t leave it laying around in the garden to deal with ant problems. Spraying the nest with undiluted vinegar – will discouraged them temporarily).

Fleas: fleas detest mint – throw fresh mint cuttings where the pet sleeps. Vacuum thoroughly to remove eggs from carpets and mats. Sprinkle with eucalyptus oil to deter their habitation in certain areas. Control fleas on your pet.

Cockroaches: Talcum powder or Epsom salts will deter cockroaches (which dislike walking on grainy powder). In the olden days it was believed that fresh cucumber also deterred cockroaches.

Dishes containing bicarb soda and icing sugar will destroy cockroaches who nibble the mix.

Homemade cockroach traps: Leave old margarine tubs (containing a few remaining dregs of margarine) in areas where cockroaches frequent.

They will crawl into the tub to savour the margarine, only to find the walls too slippery for escape. (A little sherry, piece of cake or bread, in the container will hasten their attraction to the trap).

Hot Powder: Chilli powder or pepper sprinkled in problem areas will deter crawling insects - ants, silverfish and cockroaches.

Flies: Try a fly swatter - it's cheap, economical and very environmentally safe (no chemicals!).

Weevils: Thoroughly clean out food storage areas.

Personal Insect Repellent: Rub or spray cider vinegar onto the skin to make it ‘unpalatable’ to insects - such as mosquitoes. There are also a couple of species of plants, such as the citronella scented pelargonium that, when brushed across the skin, will act as a natural repellent.

Insects in the Garden: It’s important in terms of ‘harmony in the garden’ not to eradicate all garden insects with powerful repellents – some do a wonderful job at maintaining insect numbers to benefit the garden. So a gentle non-chemical approach is best. Here’s a useful soap-based spray that is safe to use: Recipe: 'Never-Fail Garden Spray' - Make up a mixture of 100g grated soap dissolved in 300ml boiling water – blend and leave to cool to form a thick jelly. Add 8 litres of hot water and dissolve. Pour into recycled spray bottles and spray onto garden plants. To make the spray a more effective insect repellent soak garlic cloves and hot fresh chilli in the mixture before using. (Tie into a small bag so that it is easier to remove – do not use crushed or powdered chilli/garlic as it will block the sprayer). Two tablespoons of eucalyptus oil may also be added.

(This mix will need to be used more frequently then chemically based sprays – about once fortnightly – in order to be effective. Suited to sucking and biting insects such as white-fly, aphids, caterpillars, etc. who dislike the taste of soap).

t our April meeting Tim McCumiskey was officially crowned as President. His official manifesto is that the main purpose of the club is to have Fun! Friendship! and Fellowship!

On March 20th we had our annual bowls tournament. It was a successful day with 40 members and guests attending.

A few bowls were traumatised but have now recovered.

Thanks to Bob McCann for organizing & promoting this event.

Our guest speaker was Richard Smith the instigator and driving force behind bringing the clipper ship “City of Adelaide” to Adelaide. This vessel which was built in 1864 is the world’s oldest surviving composite clipper ship (wooden hull on iron frame). The only other is the “Cutty Sark” It is one of the world’s twelve most historic ships and is of international significance.

The massive vessel was purpose built to carry passengers and cargo to and from Adelaide and the UK. It undertook 23 voyages from 1864 to 1887. After 1887 the ship carried coal around the British coast and then transported timber from America. It was later used as an isolation hospital in Southampton and went into the Royal Navy & later was used by Naval Reserves as clubrooms.

Richard deserves a huge pat on the back for his 14 year campaign to save this iconic vessel. We should also recognize the generosity of many SA engineering firms and One Steel who donated services and materials for the construction of the steel cradle used to move the ship.

It is planned that this vessel will be the centre-piece of a seaport village in Port Adelaide’s inner harbour offering the perfect interactive environment for visitors to learn about Australian maritime & colonial history.

Night Owls report 2015

T

he winners of this competition were “Triple Trouble” Jayne Warnock, (SK), Neil Wills and Fraser Ahrent. The Night Owls season came to an end on a less than summery St Patricks Day. With a “dress in green” theme, there was some crazy hair colour, wild outfits and some crafty costumes. We all took to the greens (no pun intended) to play our nearest competitor, according to your seasons tally. By all reports, we had many close games and it was really great way to end what has been another successful season. Triple Trouble were our minor round winners and they took Grand Final honours from VJJ, in what looked like a very serious (for a social bowls comp point of view) battle. The Night Owls competition is run 100% by volunteers and I am grateful to all those that help make it great! It is a fabulous way to learn the game and me e t n ew peop le fro m you r community, in a relaxed and friendly setting. Local veterans benefit from Saluting Their Service grants

eterans and ex-service people across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island will benefit from over $34,000 in funding secured through the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service grants programme.

The Saluting Their Service (STS) grants programme is designed to preserve our wartime heritage and to involve people throughout the nation in a wide range of activities and projects that honour the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women.

Two categories of grants are available under STS: Community Commemorative Grants and Major Commemorative Grants.

Community Commemorative Grants are modest grants of up to $4,000 which are available for projects that assist people at a community level and enable small communities to build memorials and preserve wartime memorabilia that is significant locally but is not necessarily nationally significant.

n Wednesday 1st April, Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre celebrated their annual Easter Family Night. Easter Bunny made a special appearance, hand delivering Easter eggs to the children, which brought many smiles!

Thanks to our families who donated chocolates, we had 23 winners in the raffle which raised $526 for the YCC Centre. Thankyou to all who participated and a special thanks to Larissa Barry, Wakefield Grange, Yankalilla Bakery and Yankalilla Foodland, who donated food and their help on the night. It was a fabulous evening enjoyed by all.

WOAH! What a Story

as a story ever left you speechless? Sent your imagination running wild, unable to process the magnitude of the epic events; when all that’s left to say is WOAH! Something moves us when we hear a story of one person overcoming the odds. When everything was against them, they seemingly had no chance and no hope. But somehow, they triumphed. Something inside us leaps when we hear extreme stories of the human spirit; maybe all we can muster is an amazed, WOAH! On Friday 27th March two local schools, Myponga and Rapid Bay Primary were “blown away” by a story presented by a Schools Ministry Group (SMG) team led by Matt Crook. SMG also just happens to be the employing group for Pastoral Care Workers (formerly school chaplains) in South Australia. Gina Hunt is our local PCW who works in both schools.

During the sessions the Easter story of Jesus was retold, exploring sayings like, ‘Love your enemies’ and the well-known; ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated’. These words tend to roll off the tongue, but when applied can leave people thinking, WOAH! The children were given some insight as to why so many people view Jesus’ life as important, and recognize Easter as a special event to celebrate.

Sessions were a valuable time to learn and reflect.

They were thought provoking, entertaining, funny, engaging, …. WOAH! Major Commemorative Grants are available for significant projects, usually at a national or state/territory level that contribute to Australia’s understanding of its wartime heritage and honour the service and sacrifice of its servicemen and women.

Yankalilla Historical Society

ollowing on from last month’s article on the building of this district’s early churches the story brings us to Carrickalinga, where a church was built near the “Forktree” Depot. Mr. Green raised and carted the stone for the building and others gave acres of wheat to defray costs.

Opened in 1860, it remained in use for 31 years.

In 1861 the Parkfield Christian Church on the road between Hay Flat and Dairy Flat was opened.

Affectionately known as “Little Bricky” it was later used as a school.

On the southern end of Dairy Flat Mr. Richard Stone built the Rockwella Chapel for his wife Eliza. People gathered at this Baptist chapel for worship, baptisms and for all of the other activities of a Christian community. This included a Sunday School where Mrs. Stone was a teacher.

The Bible Christian cause in Yankalilla began when Mrs. Roberts, the wife of the Superintending Minister stationed at Willunga, preached to an interested and earnest congregation from a bullock dray in 1856. A chapel, adjacent to Butterworth’s mill near Bungala House was opened circa 1860, the Ministers stationed at Willunga, the congregations as far apart as Port Elliot and Yankalilla. In 1866 Yankalilla became a separate circuit, with Rev. J. Counter as its first

resident minister. Following an increase in population the site of the present Uniting Church was acquired, the lane at the side leading up to the original manse. The first service of worship was held in 1879.

The first church in the Myponga area is thought to have been the Scots Church near Myponga Beach. It was erected by the Whitelaw and Inglis families in about 1860. Constructed with stone walls and a paling roof it served for five or six years under the leadership of Rev. Benny who travelled from McLaren Vale, and later Rev. Sinclair from Yankalilla. It was also used as a school. In 1866 Henry and William Hewett built a Bible Christian Chapel at Myponga Beach. From 1868 to 1873 a private school was conducted in the nearby three-roomed cottage.

The first building known to have been a place of worship in Myponga was known as the Union Chapel. It stood on land owned by Alexander Cameron, a Presbyterian from Scotland. The Chapel, built by the local community, also served as a day school. Built of wattle and daub it was seldom used as a chapel (except by the Reverend Miller and an occasional local preacher.) In 1868 the Bible Christians procured the title of the Union Chapel, and in 1871gave the Anglicans and the school notice to quit, the congregation securing the use of a shoe-makers cottage which,

by removing the dividing walls made it suitable for church services and a school.

In 1875 St. Matthias Church was opened, its foundations built by local men and women who had excavated the stone for the building. Costing the equivalent of $1,250 in today’s currency it was primarily a day school for a number of years until the Government school was built.

Demolished in 1881 it was replaced by a new Myponga Bible Christian Chapel which was opened and consecrated on 23rd December, 1883.

In 1942 Lutheran families in Myponga were travelling to Mt. Compass for worship. Due to petrol rationing it became necessary to hold services at Myponga, in Norman Schultz’s home. In 1945 a congregation was formed, and in 1956 a church was built via voluntary labour under the supervision of Cyril Pearce, on land purchased from A.H. Hutchinson. Services were held regularly under Pastors Schmidt, Renner, Schafraneck, Wundersitz and Leske until dwindling congregations brought the church to a close in the late 1970s.

By 1910 the old Bible Christian Church at Torrens Vale was in a dilapidated condition. Built fifty-six years earlier, a site was prepared for a new building. Two old identities, Mrs. Richard Stone and Mr. Will Nosworthy were present, Mrs. Stone, at the age of ninety, wielding a spade with the other helpers.

Modern transport has resulted in a decrease in the number of churches needed to serve the district e.g. St. Thomas’s at Inman Valley has been transferred to the Victor Harbor Circuit. Some churches united with others, e,g. the Methodist union in 1900, and, in 1977, the formation of the Uniting Church when the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches came together.

Two churches have been built since World War Two. In 1947 the first regular Methodist service was conducted at Parawa in the vacated Pengelly home known as the White

House. Residents combined to build a church-hall on land donated by Mr. & Mrs. R.O. Carter. Opened in 1952 it still stands, despite its exposure to the elements from all directions. In 1969 a neat, new church built next to the church-hall was opened by Mrs. Hilda Lush, organist and staunch supporter of the Parawa church since its inception.

Now that we are in our winter recess the next meeting will not be held until 14th September, in the Yankalilla Council Chambers. On Wednesday mornings one of our members will be in attendance at the Yankalilla Library between 10am and noon.

Anyone needing assistance with family research, or who would like information on any other matter is welcome to drop in.

2014/2015 Stellar year at Normanville t was a stand-out season for Normanville tennis players this

year culminating on winning the Brian Lienert Shield. This Shield is

awarded to both large and small clubs of which Normanville is classed in the latter and goes to the most successful.

We started the season with 5 Junior teams and one Senior team and had 4 of them playing finals tennis by March this year. We managed to collect 2 premierships with the Junior Division 5-Red and Division 6-Red. This was actually the 2nd year running the club has won the Junior Division 6 Shield. Well done to all players.

Other highlights included 3 players winning the ‘Most Consistent’ trophies in their divisions across the Great Southern Association and they were; Wendy Lewis-Baida-Most Consistent Woman -Senior B Doubles; Allan Wellum-Most Consistent Man-Senior B Doubles and Anika Wollaston-Most Consistent Junior Division 6.

On a club level our Top Junior for 2014/2015 was Athol Wakely, who was also a member of the Division 5 Premiership team, and the Glenda Oats Encouragement Award for an up & coming new player was won by Blake Rodrigues. Well done to both

boys.

We also had several juniors competing in tournaments (outside of the normal Saturday Competition) and our youngest player Gabriel Santos was successful in winning the Division 6 singles, doubles (with his brother Bernardo) and the parent/ child doubles (with his father). Well done Santos family.

Normanville also has a very strong Social Tennis group and we as a club always welcome new players both young and old. The next competition season begins in October with registrations happening early to mid September.
