Inman Valley Gets Creative

ome budding young artists from Inman Valley get busy with their ‘Door Art’ creations for this year’s Festival Fleurieu. The subject for their project was inspired by the abundant bird life that inhabits the valley.

Local artist Carla Blair co-ordinated the day and kept eight creative and highly active children involved and inspired plus encouraged plenty of creative expression in the decoration process.

The finished doors will form part of Inman Valley Presents contribution for Festival Fleurieu this coming April.

Also part of this year’s festival will be an extensive exhibition of local arts and craft at the Uniting Church Hall at Inman Valley.

So keep your eyes peeled for the doors, which will be located around the valley in the lead up to Festival Fleurieu.

ouise Allstrom was announced the inaugural recipient of the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre volunteer of the year award for 2014. The award was presented to Louise in recognition of her contribution to the YCCC over the last four years.

In presenting the award the Director of the Children’s Centre – Cathy Tozer – thanked Louise for her ongoing commitment to the Children’s Centre – in particular the various roles she has taken on the Centre’s Governing Council including Yankalilla Council Representative and Treasurer. The award was presented on the Children’s Centre site review and planning day for 2015 and it was again noted that Louise was continuing her volunteering commitment to the centre by attending the review and planning day and adding value by contributing her extensive business and community knowledge into the review and planning process.

omen with Fibre's first meeting for 2015 was a successful basket making workshop conducted by Nancy Duggan. The photo shows some of our members choosing their fibres to be woven. Annual Collectors Display Day

he 10th Annual Adelaide Collectors Display Day will be held on Sunday 8th March, in the Yankalilla Agricultural Hall, on the corner of Jervois Rd and Main South Road, Yankalilla from 10am to 3pm.

2015 is the Centenary of the ANZAC Gallipoli Landing and the display day will be having a Gallipoli theme and

World War 2 display. Red Cross, Yankalilla Area School and the Rural Museum will be participating. Rotary will be catering with their food and beverage tent.

t the Lions Dinner Meeting on March 2nd, Natalie von Bertouch, Publicity Director of the Little Heroes Foundation gave a very informative talk on the fantastic work given by this ground breaking organisation. Such as treatment of the extremely rare 'Butterfly Syndrome' where a child is born with skin lacking elasticity. Of their developing robotics treatment of children suffering neurological disabilities resulting in the inability to make repetitive movements and of the latest project of the organisation the purchase of two MRI machines (each in the vicinity of 4 million dollars).

Inman Quilters Gear Up For April 2015 Quilt Show

W

ell, the Inman Quilters are back from their Christmas/New Year break and it is heads down with preparations for our upcoming Quilt Exhibition.

Inman Quilters have been very successful in the past raising monies via our Quilt Exhibitions and Raffle quilts, for various charities across the Southern Fleurieu and this year will be no exception.

Throughout 2014 we created and stitched two beautiful quilts which are to be raffled off and all monies raised from the ticket sales go to our nominated charities which for 2015 are

the Inman Valley CFS and the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group. As 2015 is the Centenary of our Anzacs, we have also chosen to support the Commando Welfare Trust.

The ladies from Inman Valley are out and about selling tickets for the Raffle Quilts. To date we have attended at the Inman Valley Markets, Victor Harbor Farmers Market and are fortunate to have been offered at spot at “Mix-It-Up Easter 2015”.

Of the two quilts, one is a queen size in a contemporary design and the other is a lap quilt in the more traditional look.

And both are just stunning - of course!!!

So keep a look out for those tickets. You have to be in it to win it!!

Professor Graeme Hugo

he early death of Professor Graeme Hugo AO from Adelaide University in January has greatly saddened many in South Australia, interstate and overseas. Family and friends knew his capacity to give time to everyone and to care deeply. His brilliant and penetrating mind won him widespread respect and he was a much loved friend and colleague in the international academic community.

Dedicated to his work, he was a prolific writer and speaker on population and migration, and he leaves a large and significant body of literature in this sphere, and research which will be ongoing. Graeme was also working on a state-wide project with the LGA and Adrian Skull about coastal towns at the time of his death.

Yankalilla has cause to be grateful to Graeme for the research and analysis he

did, at no cost to us, on the population needs and trends in this council area.

His highly impressive work in the Keeping Pace Survey is available at council if people want to read it for themselves.

Funding for safer beaches

urf Life Saving Clubs on the Fleurieu Peninsula have secured funding through the Australian Government’s Beach Safety Equipment Fund to purchase vital lifesaving and first aid equipment.

The Beach Safety Equipment Fund is providing Australian Surf Life Saving Clubs with $8 million of additional funding over five years to purchase essential rescue equipment, such as inflatable rescue boats, rescue boards, defibrillators and oxygen resuscitators.

The Beach Safety Equipment Fund provides support directly to where it is

needed most: to support the volunteers patrolling beaches in surf lifesaving clubs throughout Australia.

In the Mayo electorate, recipients of the funding include: Chiton Rocks Surf Life Saving Club, Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club, Normanville Surf Life Saving Club, Port Elliot Surf Life Saving Club These programmes are part of the Government’s $15 million package to cut drowning deaths across the nation which includes $4 million to assist the Royal Life Saving Society prevent drownings in inland waterways and an existing commitment of $1 million a year working with Laurie Lawrence to produce, develop and distribute water safety messages, DVDs and educational material targeting more than 1.5 million Australian children aged up to four years.

Cape Jervis Community Market

T

he Cape Jervis Community Market has gone from strength to strength with every month. Since its humble beginnings in November 2012 with a total of five regular stalls and two or three occasional stalls, the local market has grown to an impressive fourteen stalls in January, with the February market expanding to sixteen.

Whilst its regular location is in and around the Cape Jervis Tavern on Main South Road, it has occasionally grown legs and taken place at other local settings such as Wirrina Cove and Deep Creek Conservation Park for their annual Open Day. The market emphasises quality locally-made products and produce. Stalls provide, jewellery and handcrafted dolls, a variety of edibles such as bacon and egg sandwiches for those who missed breakfast, and baked treats such as cakes and biscuits for the sweet tooth and savoury goodies! The market has grown to house a huge variety of stalls which include handcrafted knives, products made from local timbers, hand dyed silk products, baskets and things created from found objects, dreamcatchers, preserved fruit, worm farms and worm products and produce from local businesses including the Whistling Pig Farm and Hot Dog Fisheries Abalone.

Market founder, Heather Teakle, originally set up the Cape Jervis Community Market to make available local fish produce with the stalls supporting this, however unmanageable regulations and fees temporarily made this unattainable. Later in the market’s first season Victor Harbor fisher folk began supplying the markets with fresh locally caught fish. Now fresh fish is available at Cape Jervis a short distance

from the market and you can’t get much fresher than that!

The Cape Jervis Community Market is held on the second Sunday of every month and is advertised in the Cape Jervis Courier and the Cape Jervis Community Market Facebook page. The next market is on Sunday 8th March 9am–1pm.

Unwelcome visitor evicted from Granite Island

A

n aggressive weed species with sharp seeds which cause injuries to people and animals is close to being eradicated from Granite Island.

Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges (NR AMLR) Senior Ranger Seiji Iwao had a big smile on his face when he found and removed just one single Khaki Weed plant this season, following a four year battle to remove hundreds of plants from the island.

The eradication program conducted by NRAMLR involved removing the plants as they appeared each summer, including pulling out 750 plants by hand over one season.

Kicking the pest plant off the island posed a big challenge, said Mr Iwao. The secret of its survival is a deep tap root similar to a carrot.

“The tricky thing is that we have to remove the deep taproot by hand because if you only destroy the plant above ground, it will re-sprout. It’s also important to monitor the infestation and remove the plants frequently: it only needs a very short time to drop its seeds after the germination and this germination period lasts a couple of months.”

Four years ago, when the program began on Granite Island, Khaki Weed covered an area the size of two swimming pools.

Introduced from South America, Khaki Weed creates real problems for native ecosystems. As it covers the ground with a thick layer of leaves, it blocks out light, uses up water and nutrients and excludes all other plants. Added to that, dozens of needle-sharp spines cover the surface of the 1cm seeds, which can deeply penetrate the skin of people and animals.

Mr Iwao said since the plant has been removed, a carpet of brightly coloured native Garland Lily has sprung up in its place.

It can become a nuisance in areas which are frequently watered, such as caravan parks, orchards and lawns and can disperse widely when the seeds attach to clothing, animals and machinery.

Fortunately, only a few isolated infestations have been reported around the southern coastal areas of the Gulf, and these have been controlled or removed.

ur first meeting for 2015 was held on 3rd February. President Allan Barnes has decreed that our theme for the year will be fun & fellowship so it promises to be an interesting and entertaining year.

Ross Trigg has already organized several social events such as a dinner at the Courthouse Restaurant. Our annual bowls competition is coming up soon.

Wagonmaster Barry Oats is in the process of arranging a caravan trip to an exotic place.

We had an extravaganza of birthdays in February with Peter Main, David Salkeld, Ray Barton, Ian Uppill, Peter Chambers & Maurice Woodman all celebrating.

Our guest speaker was Ted Vandijk who spoke about his time as a forensic expert with SA Police. Ted specialized in identifying tool marks at crime scenes.

Each tool such as a bolt cutter or a chisel leaves unique striations. In one case Ted was able to identify a pen knife that an offender used to slash tyres. Other cases involved identification of a can opener and a heat sealing machine used to seal plastic bags of heroin.

Ted gained an international reputation for his expertise and gave evidence in cases in other countries.

After retiring from SAPOL, Ted went to Timor to establish a forensic laboratory.

It was a most interesting talk delivered with much enthusiasm.

he pre season is well and truly in swing for the Yankalilla Football Club, both on and off field.

Players have been training for some time now in preparation for a good year on the oval. Our senior teams have been bolstered by the return of some former players, including Matt Wilson and Paddy Fittock, and the recruitment of some experienced players in former Sturt players John Hinge and Ben Kane, three time SA Country representative Joel Kay. As always if anyone is keen to play or learn football, our door is always open.

Off the field has been busy, with the appointment of star recruit Adam ‘Hazzman’ Hunt as Bar Manager.

We are open for drinks and meals every Thursday and Friday night. changed brands therefore using the delightful Golden North icecream which has no wheat products nor palm oil, a renowned SA brand. The honey flavour is my favourite, other flavours such as chocolate and rum & raisin are delectable!

The red-gum and wrought-iron furniture is magnificent and extra special now because unfortunately both creators have passed. Bruce Reynolds died in July last year and recently our Harry Zalups has joined him. I am honoured to have had their friendship and support over the years and equally cherish the fact that their spirits live on in my shop with their brilliant craftsmanship. They will be sorely missed by myself, their friends and their families of whom I wish much love, always.

The Festival Fleurieu in April will showcase the many creative and artistic souls who dwell in our beautiful region.

Whilst I continue to display my passion for art, I have recently b een acknowledging the indigenous spirit of the area. Many of my recent paintings have sold quickly which is heartwarming. I will continue to portray the Lady Bay to Rapid Head coastline with earth colours and always a Southern Cross with a slight amount of 'dots' as I am really enjoying this style. My affirmations are a pleasure to share also, a positive and endearing prose against a simple design provide the perfect gift for oneself or indeed someone special!

ear Festival Fleurieu Supporter, You may well be aware that Festival Fleurieu (formerly the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival) happens again this year from 11-19 April and that the program is available widely throughout the area.

As a part of the Festival this year, artist Barb Pettigrew has initiated the "doorscape" project as our "streetscape" for the Festival. Many colourful doors will be seen coming into the area, at Myponga, down to Inman Valley through Yankalilla, Normanville and all the way down to Cape Jervis.

We are hoping that many of you may already have painted a door or be in the process of going down this track. Others may be thinking of painting a door and if you need information on where to get one or wish to discuss, please contact Barb on email barb_grant@bigpond.com or phone 0416110806.

Unpainted doors ready for your artwork can be collected at the Visitor Information Centre on Main Road, Yankalilla.

For those of you who may have a painted door/s already, can you please register your name and contact details by emailing info@festivalfleurieu.com.au - a photo of your completed door/doors would also be great so we can form a “gallery of doors” We would also like to know if you have a proposed location in mind to install your door. Preferably along one of the main roads, either attached to a fence or a tree on private property. This way, we can gather information on where to see some great doors displayed.

hat was the fastest Christmas and already we are halfway through February. To all those people who supported us (the Red Cross) at the garden party on 13th February (a Friday no less) but not unlucky for us as we raised close to $1,000. A raffle was held with some nice Tupperware as prizes and the winners were Jan Sleep, Heather Clarke, Maxine Hodgson, Joyce/ Liz Blesing, Joan Squire and Joan Anderson. Round 3 of the Green Army now open in Mayo

C

ommunity organisations, environment groups and local councils in the Mayo electorate are invited to nominate new Green Army projects to support practical environment and conservation activities in the region – with round 3 of the programme now open for applications.

The Green Army is a key Coalition election commitment that gives Australians, aged 17-24 years, the opportunity for training and experience in environmental and conservation fields and to explore careers in conservation management, while delivering real benefits to the Australian environment.

Round 1 teams are already out in the field improving the environment.

Locally, the Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning (GWLAP) project is underway, with participants undertaking practical and educational environmental activities to develop their skills in environmental management while supporting the GWLAP area with local initiatives. These include: native seed collection, revegetation, weed management, fencing, erosion control, coastal management works, ecological mapping, monitoring and flaura and fauna surveys.

Successful round 2 projects will be

announced shortly. And now we’re calling for round 3 projects.

These can include a vast range of activities on land and in our waterways, from restoring and protecting native habitat, weeding, revegetation and cleaning up waterways, creeks and rivers to fencing, gully remediation and preventing erosion.

Local communities in the Mayo electorate know what needs to be done to improve our local environment and I’m calling on them to nominate Green Army projects that support practical environment and conservation activities.

Projects must run for 20-26 weeks and can take place across urban, regional and remote Australia on public land, Indigenous-held lands, or private land.

Projects must benefit the environment or national or Indigenous heritage and offer participants valuable practical experience.

Green Army participants will also receive an allowance and be eligible to gain Certificate I or Certificate II qualifications in areas such as land management, park management, landscaping or horticulture or nationally endorsed skills set to support them in their future career prospects.

South Coast District Hospital to have Doctors 24/7

M

edical officers will be based at South Coast District Hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week as part of a new medical model being introduced.

Country Health SA Chief Executive Officer Maree Geraghty said the new model will see doctors on site throughout the day and overnight to provide emergency and inpatient services, as occurs at major metropolitan hospitals.

“For many years, when a patient attended South Coast Hospital a GP would be called to hospital to assess and treat them,” Maree Geraghty said.

“However it has become apparent that this model is no longer the most suitable one for the hospital.

“With the region’s increasing population, and significant numbers of tourists visiting the area, it’s appropriate to permanently situate doctors at South Coast District Hospital.

“As of 1 March, we will implement a new salaried medical service which will provide medical coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This will give community members timely access to high-level medical care at all times of the day and night, and relieve some of the workload from local GPs. “I would like to thank the highly-skilled local GPs who have traditionally provided on-call medical services at the

hospital for their hard work over the years.

“Local doctors have committed to continue providing valuable specialty services at the hospital, such as obstetrics and anaesthetics.

“We’re also keen for them to continue their hospital work as part of the salaried medical model, and are committed to exploring this option with interested local GPs. “While this is a change in the way medical services are currently provided at South Coast District Hospital, we believe it’s the best option for patients and will provide them with more comprehensive and timely hospital care.”

Under the new model salaried staff, including senior medical practitioners and consultants, will be required to work an emergency service roster and provide inpatient and non-procedural medical services.

There will be no disruption to medical services at South Coast District Hospital as a result of the introduction of the new medical model at any stage.

South Coast residents will continue to see their regular GP as normal. If a person requires hospital care they will be admitted to hospital and treated by the rostered medical officer who will liaise as required with the patient’s nominated GP.

he Encounter Lutheran College has secured $999,900 in funding for a new resource centre through the Australian Government’s Capital Grants Programme.

Students and staff at Encounter Lutheran College now have full use of a new resource facility called ‘the Nest’ which includes a refurbished classroom, work room and office.

The Capital Grants Programme provides funding to assist non-government primary and secondary school communities to improve capital infrastructure where they otherwise may not have access to sufficient capital resources.

The centre was officially opened on 20th February by Federal Member for Mayo and Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Hon. Jamie Briggs MP on behalf of Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education.

Season starts Saturday 28th March. 12 noon hit off, bring a mate. All Welcome.

Tuesday comp is still happening. Principally a 9 hole for learners, 18 hole still being played. Both for Men and Women. All welcome The Yank Golf Club is situated in the Memorial Park complex. It is an 18 hole, sand scrape course. A shot gun hit off at 12 noon. The great thing about our club is that you meet and play with a lot of different people.

We have inner club teams which creates a lot of fun and comradery. “Go Gold”.

Subs are affordable at $180 for the year. A comp fee each week, long drives, nearest to the pin, birdie holes, 3 grades, and there are good prizes. Our greatest prize is the mate ship at the 19th.

For the Tuesday learners we are offering an $80 membership for a 9 hole comp.

Our season runs through to the end of October, then a twilight 9 hole comp on Fridays when daylight saving is around.

he well attended Friday evening twilight golf has been an exciting and enjoyable time. Due to extreme weather one days play was suspended. With the twilight season end getting near interest has developed in the Summer Cup Final. With five weeks to go the contended players positions on points are as follows: Rob Martin 35, Joe Little 31, Bill Walding 29, Lorna Nugent 27, Steve Scott 27, Anita Hodge 24. By the time you read these positions could be changed.

Rob Martin had a comfortable lead but Joe and Bill are making challenges and narrowing the gap. Our thanks go to our major sponsors plus individual ones which enable 9 prizes each week with an occasional jackpot carry over to the next week.

Fires and Friendships by Rox Rosey (pt 1)

I

t is well known of the trauma, destruction, broken dreams and heartbreak during the recent bush fires in our Adelaide Hills.

Of course, other states have had their share of fires and the losses involved, these fires in the Kersbrook area had a special meaning for our family.

We had been following the newspaper, media and television reports each day during this period which plagues our state during the summer months.

One day when we had picked up our daily paper there was a photo of a landowner standing by this red gate which had survived the fire’s vicious density. The landowner’s name rang a bell and memories started to gather in our minds.

Over fifty years ago, we had been living in the Kersbrook forest, through necessity after having been evicted from a rental flat due to me expecting our first child.

My husband, then a police constable working in Adelaide had a mate he did patrols with. This mate lived in Kersbrook and had heard of a little cottage that was for rent.

We moved in with our meagre belongings, it was very basic but like a palace to us.

We didn’t have any neighbours close by – the nearest one being about half a mile away, we were the last house on that road with electricity connected.

We had never been in country like this in our lives and it was all strange to us, wood stove, wood copper for boiling water for the tin bath and for washing clothes (by hand and then hanging on a prop line), however we did have a trough and a mangle for squeezing the water out.

Our only means of transport was a 1939 Singer Tourer with a mind of it’s own.

Many a freezing cold winter morning we had to boil up our electric jug so we could pour water into the radiator to start the old girl up.

This was a tad annoying, especially if hubbie was due to drive to Adelaide for his shift. We learnt to rise early to

ensure the car was warmed up well before departure time.

There were more pleasant times though.

For instance, when returning home sometimes from a trip to town, we would find a box of food, veggies, fruit in season and home made goodies.

We never did find out who our mysterious benefactors were.

There were the times that we had no wood for the stove and Cyril from the farm a bit up the road from us, would drop in a load on his old truck and the smoke would again curl up from the chimney.

The bloke with the red gate in the paper was Cyril’s son and he would have been a school boy.

When hubbie was on night shift, I would go down to another farmer’s house and sit there in their comfy little room with a roaring fire keeping us warm and eating new season’s apples to our heart’s content.

I learnt to play Euchre and there were no holds barred and no quarter given.

It will take a second instalment to acknowledge all the wonderful people of Kersbrook and their kindnesses, as well as relate how we met up with some of them after some fifty years.

Unfriendly Attitude of Normanville Hotel Staff

was on a visit from the UK visiting relatives. I decided to take them to the Normanville Hotel for dinner to show my appreciation. We ordered drinks and I asked if the drinks bill could be added to our food bill. The bar staff said that this was not possible unless I left them a credit card. I then offered to leave them $150 cash as I did not have my credit card with me. The manager said this was unacceptable and we could not eat at the hotel unless I left a credit card. When asked for an explanation he said we might do a runner without paying. I am 83 years old and would not have thought that a possibility. He then suggested several other places where we could eat and made it clear that we were not welcome to stay there. Fortunately we went to the Links Hotel and had a excellent meal served by friendly and competent staff. I later found out that the Normanville Hotel manages the Beach Cafe which locals tell me is open only intermittently. I was not surprised. Apart from this incident I found your area to be a wonderful place to visit.

Australia Day Celebrations

015 Australia Day celebrations at Bungala Park Normanville was a most enjoyable day, congratulations to our Citizen of the Year Margaret Morgan, Young Citizen Madison Russell, Event of the Year Yankalilla Historical Heritage trail opening. Our residents taking Australian citizenship were very proud as they pledged their loyalty to Australia.

Friends of Bungala Advisory Group enjoyed having the opportunity to talk, show & listen to the public on what has been achieved at this great community asset, also what can be achieved by the community. The old Bungala cottage and inside display of photos proved popular.

The native garden in the park made by the Natural Resource Centre, Normanville proved a great talking point. Yankalilla Library was an evening of romantic comedy and drama written by John Ovenden former ABC TV newsreader and journalist. The cast came from far and wide to give Yankalilla district two, one act play readings. The audience certainly appreciated it. The evening before St Valentines Day the light refreshments provided at interval proved welcoming, while the cast were able to mingle with the audience. Little cut out hearts throughout the library gave a romantic touch. Lucy from Switzerland holidaying at Carrickalinga was so grateful to be part of the audience. Congratulations to Sandra our Library Team Leader. A big thank you to Sandra, Kimberly and the cast I cannot wait for the next plays to happen.

Never before has a natural warming spell been so boosted. Signs of Earths ill health have been with us for years. They continue to raise Earth’s temperature – a at 2 degrees C increase “unwellness” becomes a real, severe illness. By 4 degrees or 5 degrees level the heat will stop all plant growth, so there will be no animals; remember humans are animals!

THE CURE – simple: Stop human population growth. Stop habitat destruction. Change to renewable energy producing fuels which are sun, wind and waves. Make nature sustainable. Protect soil, water, food production. Foreign aid to include contraceptives.

Two children per family continues the family and the community. If you want extra, adopt or foster. The Pope is now telling people to have smaller families and not breed like rabbits. I refer you to the Fenner Conference (Canberra 2013)

Come on Community Speak Out Re: Southern Fleurieu Health Practice article Yankalilla Regional News December 2014. arry Madigan General Manager of the Southern Fleurieu Family Practice (SFFP) laid out the changes occurring in the SFFP as of 1 December 2014, referring to Country Health SA withdrawing funds, the lack of consultation and subsequent termination of after hours emergency services and “On Call” services to Yankalilla district.

I fully support Peter & Anne Krichauff’s letter January Yankalilla Regional News.

The praise they expressed for the volunteer services of our district and the great work those volunteers do in helping this community when they are injured or in a sticky spot or in an accident or sickness of some sort. Their letter spoke of the past and rightly so as it is ever so praise worthy and I hope all those volunteers can continue into the future for the community’s benefit.

Family Practice (SFFP). They are a private business, employing local people and deliver a great service to our community. Yes we pay for it but think about what they deliver and how the services provided save us travel, time and money. I have spoken with Garry Madigan, from SFFP, on a couple of occasions. The most recent one included the CE of Council Adrian Skull and I learnt a lot about that practice that I didn’t appreciate before. Now our community has lost a key element of the service.

Our main discussion was about the State Government taking away $120,000, which in the scale of Government spending is small change. This part‐ funded our doctors to provide after hours care to our community and the thousands of visitors that come here during the year.

When I say part funding there was a lot more service given by the SFFP than they were funded for. It would have cost the Government 2 or 3 fold if the service was fully funded. It will probably cost the Government a lot more to provide a lesser service and not here for our community.

What I’m saying is that our community don’t have any after hours on call doctor any more. If medical help is needed they must travel to Noarlunga and beyond or Victor Harbor Hospital, and there is no guarantee of care there. I am astounded that the community is not outraged by this. I saw it in the Victor Harbor Times and in my role as Mayor, approached Mr Madigan. Council is providing support by lobbying the Premier and Minister Snelling as well as Michael Pengilly, member for Finniss, but if we as a community let Governments do this to us with out a fight, what is next?

I’m going to take you back to the Ambulance service. We are very fortunate to have people like Jon Jaensch and his dedicated staff, all volunteers, but what succession is there and with no succession are we going to loose that next, or the CFS, or SES? Will they all go to regionalisation?

If you are going to fight for your community don’t forget to support the pensioners who have had $190 rate concession taken from them. On the back of a letter in the recent rate notice there are people who you can write to. Use it.

Let them know we want our doctors back, the concession back, and more support for our district.

T

he following is correspondence between SFFP and The Hon Jay Weatherill MP, Premier, Government of South Australia and The Hon Jack Snelling MP, Minister for Health, Government of South Australia as mentioned in the article on the next page (p29).

Dear Premier and Minister Re: Withdrawal of Emergency Funding on Fleurieu Peninsula This letter seeks your urgent intervention to review and amend the funding support previously provided to the Southern Fleurieu Family Practice (SFFP), to deliver Emergency and on-call services which was withdrawn on 2nd December 2014 without consultation.

Southern Fleurieu Family Practice and its Emergency Services The SFFP is a private medical clinic based on the western side of the Fleurieu Peninsula, servicing the Yankalilla district region of 4,500 people across approximately 750km2. The regional population swells to over 12,000 during the summer holiday period and other school and public holidays.

The SFFP has for many years provided the primary and emergency care for all patients and visitors as the closest hospital facility is the South Coast District Hospital located 35km away at Victor Harbor, with the Noarlunga Health Service and Flinders Medical Centre located approximately 50 and 60km away respectively in the Southern Metropolitan area. Therefore, as the sole medical service we have provided a community health service beyond the normal scope of a private practice. Specifically this has included: • A consulting schedule which spans 7 days a week including extended consulting hours to 8pm Monday - Friday. Funding support for this service Is provided by the Federal Government.

• An Accident and Emergency service available to the public during surgery opening hours and an 'on-call' medical service to patients after the surgery has closed. Funding support ($118,000 for 2014) for these services had previously been provided by Country Health South Australia (CHSA).

The CHSA funding support was allocated to subsidising the cost of a nurse for daytime attendance and to provide an 'on-call' allowance to doctors while on call. The average nightly payment to Doctors was $200.

The latter service had been provided by consulting Doctors at the Practice who shared the on-call roster for weeknights and weekends.

Bearing in mind the level of remuneration provided to be 'oncall' this service has been provided at an extremeiy low cost relative to remuneration levels paid to Doctors/Nurses who staff the GP Plus hotline or the costs associated with unnecessary hospital attendances and admissions.

Process of Funding withdrawal The allegation by an unnamed spokesperson quoted in the Victor Harbor Times (issue dated 18th December) that "the practice was informed in September 2013 that it would be implementing new emergency service arrangements from December 1, 2014, and that funding support of $118,000 would likely cease" (our emphasis) is correct. However our records demonstrate no consultation and a series of communications were effectively ignored. (A summary of communications regarding this mater have been provided in Attachment A). [No room to publish it here - Ed.] The failure of CHSA to adequately consult with the community, this Practice and other affected service providers (e.g. the local volunteer SA Ambulance Service) regarding this change defies belief and the total disregard for emergency community health services and advice is deplorable. Even if this outcome was determined to remain following consultation, it is difficult to explain why this funding would be withdrawn at the commencement of the summer holiday season which sees an increase in the regional population from 4,500 to 12,000. This process reflects poorly on the CHSA individuals concerned and also the Government and Minister of the day.

Impact of Funding withdrawal The withdrawal of this funding will increase the health and economic consequences for the community. This will affect patients who: • Attend the Practice for emergency services. They will now incur a fee that many cannot afford. With an ageing demographic and a large proportion of the resident population eligible for a Health Concession Card, any additional payment for services will exacerbate their financial position. This increases the risk that patients will not use the service at all and increase the risk to their health.

• Elect to attend the nearest emergency facility (Noarlunga, Victor Harbor), they will now incur a time delay and travel cost. While the additional cost of travel may be 'hidden' at the immediate time of the medical need, the time delay in treating an emergency presentation may have a direct consequences on the potential harm to a person.

Such delays can mean the difference between full recovery, a partial recovery or even death.

• Elect to attend the South Coast District Hospital and be refused entry as has already occurred. We have already had one of our patients refused entry as "they were not a patient of a Victor Harbor doctor" but were subsequently admitted and discharged to Flinders medical Centre so the patient could access free ambulance transfer. This introduces a time delay and impacts the financial basis for services.

• Elect to take the ambulance which will, if not insured, incur a significant direct cost of over $1,000. While we understand some cost relief may be available for disadvantaged persons the concern for such an impost may deter such transfer in the event of an emergency. The SFFP has actively encouraged patients to take out ambulance cover to

overcome this concern. We are not aware if CHSA or the Government has been so diligent in this matter.

In light of this health and economic impact we want to ask if the Premier or Minster for Health will be prepared to front a family where a family member has not recovered as possible, or died as a consequence of a service delay or because the family member could not access local support without fees?

Other impacts are expected to flow on to: • The SA Ambulance Service who will be called to many more calls and in turn many more transits to hospital. As soon as the local volunteer service is on a job other crews are required to be sent from outside the region adding more time to emergency response calls.

• The casualty areas of the public hospitals. There has been significant press in 2014 about ambulance ramping and this change appears likely to exacerbate this concern at the same hospitals.

Future options Should any consultation have taken place the SFFP would have embraced the opportunity to discuss various options to this region.

These options still remain a possibility should the Government reconsider this matter. These options include: • Resuming the prior service to provide the community with what has been a highly regarded and highly cost effective service. The cost effectiveness cannot be doubted with the Doctors receiving an average $200 per night to be available (when compared with the amounts paid at the SCDH usually 10 times this amount). While we have previously represented to CHSA this is an inadequate recompense for the requirement, we have maintained the service as we felt it was a responsibility to support the community. We are willing to resume this

service provided the funding allows payment of a more appropriate oncall allowance.

• Resuming the prior service (as above) and collaborating with other providers (eg ACH) to establish an 'overnight' bed facility. The SFFP already provides a short stay observation facility however this could possibly be extended with ACH assistance who already have some staff working through the night.

• Upgrading the volunteer ambulance service to include paid staff at least paramedic level. The local volunteer ambulance service is highly regarded in this region and in the event a local medical service is not supported, having paid paramedics would provide an increased service capability. Assuming the volunteers remained in place this option would also increase its capacity.

• All of or a combination of the above.

Our Request The withdrawal of funding is a backward step for the health services to this community. It came without consultation nor any discussion about the impact it would have on emergency medical needs. The public would not have been informed if not for the SFFP actions.

We understand the Government is constantly looking for more cost effective ways to deliver services yet this change has removed a highly cost effective service.

We seek your urgent and personal review of this matter rather than a referral to the Health bureaucracy which has already failed simple courtesy and consultation. As a consequence of this review we seek and amendment of this decision so as to provide the SFFP with appropriate funding to resume this community health service before a major incident resulting in death occurs without access to this service.

Emergency Services

ollowing the information released in the December YRN regarding funding withdrawal the Practice has received many requests for what has been done to reverse this decision and reinstate on call and emergency services to the community.

On 19th January this year the Practice wrote to the Premier and Minister for Health seeking their urgent intervention into this decision. We have provided YRN a copy of this letter so it may be published in full (on p28) so the community is fully aware of our efforts to seek a review of this funding decision and reverse the reduction in health services provided to this region. At the time of submitting this item to YRN the Practice had not received any acknowledgement or response.

The Practice is also working collaboratively with the District Council in an effort to meet the Minister and discuss these concerns.

In light of recent announcements by the State Government regarding reforms to the Hospital Emergency services and the appointment of salaried medical staff to the South Coast District Hospital the Practice is concerned no genuine effort will be made by the Government to reconsider this direction.

Comment Feedback

I

n a previous YRN issue the Practice commented on the community impact on emergency services and on-call Doctor services as a result of the State Government withdrawal of funding. In part the commentary noted “Perhaps the time has come for this community to have a permanent ambulance service …”.

It appears this comment was seen by some in the community as a negative comment about the volunteer service which currently exists. We wish to reassure all this was not the intention of this comment.

The Practice values these services and recognises the significant work carried out by those persons on a voluntary basis. We also note two of our own staff have been members of this service.

We strongly value the existing volunteer service and their efforts. We also believe this region merits a fully paid service particularly if the Government persists in the service reduction imposed through its funding cuts.

SFFP expands services to Adelaide CBD

FFP has been selected to establish a medical clinic on the University of SA City East campus. This is an exciting opportunity to integrate our medical expertise with the allied health services of UniSA Health to provide innovative health programs for the students, staff and general public at this site.

Importantly we expect we can transfer any productive programs back to Yankalilla to also better service the local patient community.

A comment from Dr Martin

here are exciting times ahead for the Southern Fleurieu Family Practice, with our expansion into the city at UniSA. I believe we will be better able to attract new doctors to our clinics and offer a bigger range of services in both Yankalilla and the city.

While I will be transferring some of my consulting time working in Yankalilla to the new practice I will continue to work regular sessions at Yankalilla every Wednesday (8.30am–8pm) and Thurs (8am–12noon) and will continue to work on the weekend roster and the occasional extra weekend when there is strong demand.

To enable my long term patients access me during this period I plan to only accept new patients/consultations in limited circumstances; specifically if they are booking for “Obstetric Shared Care”, Women’s Health issues, Contraception, Intrauterine device insertions (Mirena & Implanon), skin checks and minor excisions of skin cancer.

I will also retain my involvement supervising our GP Registrar’s, so you can also feel confident seeing a Registrar who can collaborate with me from time to time over your treatment.

Similarly if you elect to see another Doctor in the Practice whilst I’m not here you can also be assured that Doctor can also talk with me as and if needed.

And finally I can advise any of our patients who move to the city, for study or when starting a new life, you are welcome to consult with us in our new Adelaide clinic.

I hope you can understand my commitment to Yankalilla is ongoing even though my presence in both practices is essential to the success and our vision ahead. Thank you.

Her passion is also mental health and she has worked in mental health most of her medical life with special interest in Psychotherapy until last year when she decided to change her career direction to General Practice for a holistic experience.

They love travelling as a family and travelled initially for work related purposes. Dr Sujeeve worked in Sri Lanka for a few years, then moved to England where they worked and travelled around England for over 6 years before relocating to Adelaide in 2008.

They have also travelled on holiday to many parts of the world when opportunities arose. Her girls love driving to country towns and especially beaches hence she took up the opportunity to work in Yankalilla.

Dr Sujeeve loves meeting people and learning cultures and experiences. She has no family in Australia but lots of friends! She is looking forward to the same in Yankalilla and in her words “loves the atmosphere already!”

Dr Sujeeve is looking forward to acquiring a wide knowledge in General Practice experience and just having a great time during her 6 month term (or longer!) here.

Staff Changes

s a training practice we see Doctor’s come to us as they begin the next stage in their learning and development and then leave us to continue their ongoing training.

In February 2015 we farewelled Dr Shelly Gill who has been on placement here since August 2014. Whilst here she was undertaking a special program related to patients in aged care facilities in addition to traditional general practice. As part of her ongoing training, Shelly has left us for a placement in the Riverland and we hope she will return for a further period of training in 12 months.

We also said goodbye to one of our valued practice nurses, Alicia Jacobs. Alicia has secured a rural graduate supported placement in a regional hospital as part of her post graduate nursing studies. We look forward to the possibility of her returning to us once her placement is finished.

As announced in January we welcomed back Dr Kin Lau who returned to us on the 9th February. After finishing his 12 month placement here last August 2014, he went on to complete his training and fellowship examinations with the Royal Australian College of Practitioners.

We are delighted to see him back at SFFP on a permanent basis. The feedback we received from his patients during his placement was extremely positive and we look forward to working with him again.

Ro Jayawardhana (OCEP) will be with the Practice until June this year while in March we expect to host Gajon Kumaran and Elizabeth Lindner each for a 4 week stay.

Visit of the Gyuto Monks of Tibet at Second Valley Community Hall, 17-18 January

O

nce again, as happens every two years, our local hall came alive with the vibrant colours of sacred banners, robes, flags, carpets and a stage altar decorated with Buddhist ritual objects, bells, musical instruments, a large photo of a smiling Dalai Lama, candles and flowers - the serene setting for the Gyuto monks' regular visit to Second Valley, a place which they say reminds them of their exiled homeland, Tibet. Indeed, I can personally attest to their contentment in being here, since I'm supremely fortunate to live (facing East) opposite their retreat houses and can often see them wandering about their garden, or hear their flute playing, laughter and the sounds of them enjoying a game of cricket when they visit.

This time the monks again offered a rich and varied program of events for the

community and freely mingled with us all, giving generously of their time, teaching, affection, healing rituals, chanting meditations and blessings. There was also on hand a wonderful stall with a vast range of items for sale, including incense, CDs, bells, singing bowls, cards, bags, flags, scarves and jewellery, the proceeds from which help to support the monks as they tour the world spreading goodwill and uplifting everyone.

It always feels like an immense privilege to spend time with these living examples of the best we can all attain to as simultaneously human and divine beings Buddhas who do no harm and seek to serve the World Soul through love and harmony with nature. The monks radiate a uniquely mystical yet down-to-earth sense of lightness, warmth, kindness, humour,

gentle strength and wholesomeness (true 'wholi-ness') and folk of all ages - from a tiny newborn, through to children, young adults, parents and older citizens - were drawn to the gift of being in their presence.

Indeed, in a world plagued with violence, fear, suffering and uncertainty, they offer the much needed opposite - contentment, wisdom, patience, peace and compassion for all.

When not touring, the monks reside in their monastery in Dharamsala in India, at the edge of the Himalayas, where their lives are devoted to meditations chanted for the help and good of all beings. The oldest monk at the weekend, a revered lama, was with His Holiness the Dalai Lama when in 1959 he was forced to flee after the Chinese invaded Tibet. This wise, humble and humourous old lama - who is as young at heart as a child - gifted us (through his translator) with lively teachings on themes such as 'ageing while remaining ageless in spirit' and 'moving beyond self toward the joy and liberation of selflessness' - the enlightenment that comes from detachment, inner harmony and a fully open heart. Other sessions focused on children's creative workshops, morning meditations, group cleansing, energy shifting and healing rituals, and one -to-one private blessings, prayers and divinations.

Saturday ended with the monks' familiar two hour unique harmonic chanting performance, the impact of which is always deeply moving, serenely powerful, unearthly and hauntingly beautiful. The resonant, pure sound they produce comes from hearts that are empty vessels attuned to selflessness, which frees them to chant a 3 octave range chord - something which is supposed to be physically impossible.

(This is known in Tibetan as 'Zo Ked', which means the sound of a female yak.)

Often you can faintly hear the sound of bells, other voices or musical instruments even the sounds of the Cosmos itself singing - intertwining with the chants. It's a truly remarkable, freeing and unforgettable experience, made even richer by the monks' richly decorated and coloured costumes.

A special highlight of the weekend is always the monks' careful 2-day construction of a beautiful and intricate sand mandala - a circular sacred symbol as a focus of meditation - using specially blessed coloured sands that are meticulously applied to create an elaborate diagram of the spiritual life, in which the opposing life energies at the circumference are reconciled within a still core of being.

The monks recreate (from disciplined memory) a different mandala each time, since each mandala represents a focus on particular spiritual forces or deities which reside within us as the dynamic interplay of the energies of body and soul. The weekend ended with the monks' ritual dissolution of the mandala, symbolizing the release of its depicted deities and the impermanence that returns order to the chaos of new beginning and so transforms all existence. The sand was then gently gathered up into bundles and distributed to anyone who wished to take some away for further ritual use. All in all, it was a specially enriching and spiritually empowering weekend - and we were pleased to hear that the monks look forward to coming back in two years time.

Till then, we thank them and their tour organizers and supporters and wish them all safe, serene and soulful journeying as they selflessly continue to share the Buddhist truth of compassion for all.

eville Bonney will be giving a presentation at the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club on May 7th at 7pm on edible wild native plants.

Neville has been at the forefront of promoting Australian Native Flora for fifty years. His passion has covered aspects such as propagation, landscaping, seed collection and germination, farm forestry, bush botany, tree planting, broad acre direct seeding, revegetation, creating natural habitats, ethno botany and as an educator. He has written many books which will be available on the night. Bookings are essential as we will also be enjoying some samples during the evening.

when talking about any edible food that has originated from plant material.

These can be items such as fruit, fungi, nuts, leaves, seeds, tubers, fleshy rhizomes and even seaweeds. These may come from the bush, seashores or grown domestically in orchards or within revegetation projects.

Local Walks

ur last monthly walk was a historic wander around Normanville.

Margaret Morgan from the Yankalilla and District Historical Society lead 20 of us through the back streets of Normanville where we were amazed at the history of some of the places we consider common place, having no idea of their importance in the development of this area. It was so interesting we hope to have a historical walk of Yankalilla towards the end of the year.

Our next walk is on Thursday 26th March and we will be heading up to Big Gorge, Yankalilla Bay at 4.30pm.

This walk also has lots of history as Light surveyed the area in 1836, his recording in his diary stated “Out surveying, and walked up the valley; running in south-easterly direction, between very high hills. I was enchanted with this spot, it put me in mind of some of the orchards in Devonshire, and I found it plentifully supplied with fresh water. From this valley we ascended the hills, crossed over the sea-coast, and returned to our tents; the whole distance fine soil.” This was the Big Gorge.

Look out for western grey kangaroos, short-beaked echidnas or some of the 100 bird species that can easily be heard or spotted when walking in the park. The walking trails also provide spectacular scenery of the Backstairs Passage, Kangaroo Island and the rugged Deep Creek valley.

After a day of exploring, you could extend your stay under the stars at one of the five campgrounds or relax in one of the private cottages or retreat accommodation options located in the park.

Weed of the Month Coastal Galenia (Galenia pubescens) (Photos: E. Cousins; growth habit, close -up of leaves and flowers) There are some patches of coastal galenia near the start of the Heysen Trail at Cape Jervis. They occur as flat, sprawling patches about 1-2 metres across. The oval-shaped leaves are very small; like the stems, newer ones are covered in fine hairs, which you might be able to see in the second photo.

You’ll also see tiny flowers at the leaf junctions. These are white, possibly with a pink tinge at the start, but turn yellow as they age. The leaves are normally a sage-green colour, but summer stress has changed the ones

shown to a reddish-brown in places!

Galenia is a common environmental weed around the coast of SA. It likes sandy soils and disturbed sites... in the photo, the clumps are on a path! It can be difficult to eradicate when established.

Rotary Club of Yankalilla assists the Salvation Army during the recent bushfires

T

hey say that everything happens for a reason.

Once again the Rotary Club of Yankalilla catered at the fantastic annual Normanville New Year’s Eve Pageant – this time with fabulous assistance from members of Run Yank Run. Unfortunately one of our suppliers managed to send us double the amount of some items and we then had to phone them on the Friday to ask if we could return the goods ‑ they happily agreed.

That night, at about midnight, we saw, on Social Media, a call for assistance from the Salvation Army catering coordinator requesting donations of food so that they could feed the CFS fire fighters, SAPOL, St John and SAAS personnel. A quick ‘Executive’ decision was made to donate the stock that we had in the Rotary Barbecue Trailer fridge. We were able to make contact with the catering coordinator and he indicated he would be most grateful for any donations we could provide.

After loading up the vehicle with our supplies, including 17 loaves of bread, 3 trays of Wakefield Grange steak and sausages, 20 kilos of bacon, 16 dozen eggs, and a couple of containers of shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and sliced onions we headed up the hill bound for One Tree Hill.

A policeman stopped us on the approach to One Tree Hill, asking our business, and we explained what we were doing.

He shone his torch around the inside of our car and was quite surprised to see the back seat full of packs of bacon!

Once he realised we were genuine and not sightseers, he waved us through.

We eventually arrived at One Tree Hill Fire Station at about 3am after travelling through thick smoke for part of the way, and were pointed in the direction of the oval where the Salvation Army had set up their catering van. They were most grateful for the donation and happily helped us unpack the car.

So, as I said, everything happens for a reason: had our supplier not doubled our order we would not have been in a position to help. We, and our fellow Rotarians, were very happy that we were able to help in the huge firefighting effort in some small way.

Spider Bite Recovery Support Group

ello Readers.

This is a very bad spider season and ANTS, BIG ONES. I have heard of the native hopper ant but I have never seen one. I know in Victoria they have the Jack Jumper Ant and there is no anti venom for that and if stung Ambulance is the only way to go.

Unless you have an EPI pen an adrenalin filled pen that most allergy sufferers carry, even then if you use your EPI pen you have to be checked out by a Doctor.

Anaphylaxis is frightening. About a month ago I had an anaphylactic reaction to red wine vinegar. I can consume most other vinegars and never read the label. WRONG… always read the label of all that you buy, especially if you are asthmatic. Sulphur is my enemy, I started feeling a problem coming on about 12 minutes after consuming, it my throat was closing up and breathing was difficult. I took an antihistamine and it took 3 hours to reverse the problem. I tried very hard NOT to call an ambulance and decided to go to my Doctor the next morning.

HE told me that he could write me a script for an EPI pen BUT it is not on the PBS, $100 to get it from the chemist and he advised me if it should happen again to call an ambulance and be taken to a major hospital where the Doctor could prescribe one for minimal cost.

WE live at least 1 hour away from the closest major emergency dept and I would be dead by then. I am a pensioner like most down here in our beautiful town and ask who could pluck out of thin air $100.

There has to be an inquiry into the cost of something that gives you the right to breath and you can get from a hospital for minimal cost, but is not on the PBS ????

I will be talking to my ombudsman, to see if I can get the price difference looked into.

t this time of year a lot of our television viewing is devoted to tennis championships and cricket tests, most of us happy to be armchair participants. However there are many of us who also like to participate in sport.

Sport and competition have always played important roles in the early social life of the district. Though the improvised arenas may have been rough, and the gear home made, it did not detract from the fun and excitement of the competition. Early batsmen and racquet wielding tennis players were not put off by any rough conditions.

Competition between local areas probably began with the formation of the Yankalilla Football Club in the late 1880s. In regard to cricket there is no accurate record of its beginning, but it appears that the first Yankalilla cricket team played at about the turn of the century. Both football and cricket were played at the Showgrounds and continued there until the Memorial Park opened. Tennis was played there in 1911, on the same site where the courts now are. At that time the land belonged to Fred Clayton, a local storekeeper and himself a keen player. He maintained the two courts, giving them an annual coat of tar.

During the 1920s a nine hole golf course was laid out off the Gorge Road near Normanville. Second Valley and Delamere also had golf courses.

The Memorial Park, ideal for the grouping of sport facilities, encouraged the Bowling, Croquet, Tennis, Cricket, Football, Golf and Basketball clubs to establish their playing arenas there. Though the Depression years of the 1920s was a difficult time the clubs were established with a great deal of voluntary labour and careful spending.

The District Council of Yankalilla has assisted in the maintenance and upgrading of recreational grounds in the area, and assistance was given to numerous projects connected with the Memorial Park. When the oval was reconstructed in 1965 council machinery and voluntary labour were used to cart and spread 3,500 cubic yards of filling to form an even, well drained surface, resulting in an excellent playing field. Terraces were also formed on the hillside near the oval for the parking of spectators’ vehicles.

purchase of land, with other small parcels acquired since then, to extend the golf course.

In the Myponga district residents met in 1944 to form a committee to purchase land for a proposed Memorial oval. Once the land was cleared and levelled, by voluntary labour, an oval was formed, a cricket pitch laid down, and two courts suitable for netball and tennis were constructed.

A weatherboard shelter for catering and change rooms was also built. Football was first played on the oval in 1947. In 1979 further facilities were added to the clubrooms, catering for all of the participating sporting bodies. The council has regularly assisted with the maintenance of the complex now known as the Myponga Memorial Community Centre.

Rapid Bay is the setting for a playing field developed between two blocks of houses in the 1950s, under the guidance of Don Edgar, who, at that time was Officer in Charge of the BHP works. The company and the council provided the plant, the locals supplied the labour, and the ladies planted the field with grass. Dave Whibley, from Crafers, was engaged as an adviser when the gardens around the town and the grounds were laid out. The playing field became the home ground for tennis and cricket teams drawn from the town and surrounding districts for participation in association competitions.

The Yankalilla Historical Society meets on the second Monday of each month. Our next meeting will be on Monday 9th February at 8pm in the Yankalilla District Council Chambers. On Wednesday mornings one of our members will be in attendance in the Yankalilla library between 10am and noon. Normanville Sailing Club

hile our luck before Christmas was good, strong South Easterlies and the unusual January and February weather this year have not been good for sailing. We have had a few Sundays that have turned out well but most have been a challenge. February 8th was an example of this with much umming and ahhing about whether it was safe to go out due to strong winds and then an extremely quick sail to Lady Bay and back with, miraculously/skilfully, only one boat turned over. We then called it a day!! My wife caught a photo of me just managing to hold on and this is included with this month’s article.

Sailing is such fun!

We have consistently had a good turnout of boats with much enthusiasm about getting out on the water and jovial discussions about mishaps and minor victories achieved in Yankalilla Bay.

Renovations The Club is an informal group that thrives due to sailors’ need to be on the water testing themselves and their boats against the elements and the willingness of so many club and community members in their support of the underpinning and necessary activities like ‘manning’ the club boat, towing boats onto the beach, erecting shelter when the wind allows, and time keeping and monitoring the safety of the activities. Others have been mentioned before, but this issue I wanted to mention Jerry Moller and Tony Proctor who have given such long and quality service in the time keeping and safety monitoring roles (when they haven’t been actively sailing).

We are on the Normanville Beach every Sunday afternoon until the 26th of April 2015 (weather permitting). The club conducts races from 2pm every week

with sailors arriving after midday and rigging their boats. We welcome the involvement of anyone who has an interest in sailing, wishes to learn how to sail or to provide support to the sailing activities. People interested in

getting involved can contact the Club Secretary (George Reeves, 0417348613) or just say hello on any Sunday afternoon.

Yankalilla Charity Quilting Bee 2015

very January it is time for local quilters to get together and make quilts for charity. Threads, our local group, has been the host for the event since the first one in 1990. We were pleased to welcome quilters from other groups on the Fleurieu, who made a

great contribution to the success of the event.

This year, we were able to use the Over Fifties club rooms which were so suitable for us, we are very grateful for their generosity in allowing us the run of their premises.

For three days we planned, cut, matched, machined and hand sewed, producing a number of quilt tops which will be finished in the next few months.

Despite the heat we were able to work in comfort and had an enjoyable and productive time.
