Thank you to “The Friends of Bungala Park Cottage”

A

Fleurieu Festival Event called “The Singing Circle” was held at the Bungala Park Cottage on April 16th 2015. Margie Russell, who ran this event, would like to thank the Cottage Friends for erecting some shelter on the day. It was kindly loaned from the Normanville Natural Resources Management Group. Some protection from the elements was most welcome and allowed the event to be enjoyed outside the cottage at Normanville with nearly 40 people lifting their voices to a bunch of fun songs.

Tying the “Bigg Knott”

n Saturday 21st February 2015, around 6pm, childhood sweethearts Alexander Bigg and Amy Knott - tied the “Bigg Knott” with over 100 guests and friends witnessing their beach wedding at Carrickalinga - where the couple spent most of their youth.

The celebrant gave a moving, sometimes funny and personal account of their very long relationship that was filled with fun, love and devotion for each other before asking Alex and Amy to take their marriage vows.

Following their wedding, the bridal party and guests returned to the picturesque Corinium Roman Villa situated off Nosworthy Rd, in the rolling hills of Inman Valley, for their wedding reception, where, Texas Bull Machine provided a variety of spit roast meals that catered to everyone’s taste.

This was followed by strawberry pavlova for dessert. Everyone was able to relax and enjoy the party because a bus was chartered to transport guests to and from the reception as needed.

Many guests returned the following morning to share a late barbeque breakfast of bacon and eggs on toast.

The whole weekend was absolutely brilliant and our thanks must go to Sue and Paul Elliott for allowing us to take

over their villa for three days and for providing us with any assistance as needed. From our personal experience, we can thoroughly recommend Corinium Roman Villa and hosts Sue and Paul for making our very special occasion, exactly that, Very Special!

Southern Country Shows Association Outstanding Contribution Award

Y

ankalilla Show Society is very proud to congratulate local resident Jan White who was presented with the prestigious Southern Country Shows Association Outstanding Contribution Award at the Annual Dinner held in Murray Bridge on May 2nd. This award was introduced in 2008 to acknowledge individuals who have been actively involved in the Association and Shows for many years.

Jan is an exceptional long time show cook who first started exhibiting as a child, encouraged by her grandmother & mother.

After a break from exhibiting whilst Jan pursued her teaching career, Jan started exhibiting again 26 years ago at her then local show Coonalpyn, not with her cooking but goats!

Cookery, photography, knitting & flowers soon followed, so did taking on the role of convener.

Jan soon started taking her prize winning cakes to other Southern Country Shows as well as being a prize winning exhibitor at the Royal Adelaide Show. Jan has for many years won the S.C.S.A “Most successful Exhibitor in

Cookery” Award and has represented the S.C.S.A as a state finalist in the Laucke/CWA scone competition.

Jan now resides at Carrickalinga and is a very valued contributor to the Annual Yankalilla Show. On behalf of all the shows of the Southern Country Shows Association congratulations, we appreciate your support and dedication; you are truly very deserving of this special award.

T

here was a convivial atmosphere at our May meeting. President Tim McCumiskey kept the meeting flowing along with his jolly manner.

Members celebrating birthdays in May included Ray Clarke, Bob McCann and Colin Riley who received an OBE award.

The members profile was given by Don Binney who reminisced about the year 1956 when he turned 16.

This was the year Melbourne hosted the Olympics and TV commenced.

Don talked about his boyhood adventures and how growing up on the farm helped shape his character.

The rural theme was continued by our own Ross Trigg who was called upon at short notice to be our guest speaker. Ross gave an illustrated talk on how grain harvesting has changed in his lifetime.

In the early days harvesting was hot, dusty and labour intensive work involving family and outside help.

In the 1920s the equipment was horse drawn and later tractor drawn.

Today most of the harvesting is done by one operator ensconced in a high tech roomy air conditioned cabin more like a luxury mobile home.

There are plenty of buttons to push, levers to pull and screens to monitor.

They are guided by GPS and can operate all night. Some operators even use drones to identify areas that need additional fertilizer.

Productivity has been massively increased by flexible cutting bars that are up to 12 metres in width.

These ships of the land can cost up to $700,000 so you need a large scale operation to warrant this expense.

We thank Ross for sharing his encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject with us.

Rotary responds to disaster in Nepal

T

he destruction in Nepal is totally overwhelming. We can not even imagine the extent of suffering being experienced by the people of Nepal who are already desperately poor .

Even before the second earthquake it was estimated that up to 600,000 homes had been damaged or destroyed. In some areas around 95% of buildings had been damaged or totally destroyed. The death toll in mid May was already over 8,000 Rotary have a division they call ShelterBox who provide emergency housing & survival kits. Within days of the earthquake erupting they distributed 500 tents along with 500 shelter kits.

These kits contain tarpaulins ,rope and essential tools which can be used to help clear rubble& make temporary shelters and to repair damaged homes. They are also working with other aid organization to help deliver essential

food and shelter to remote communities. This essential work is continuing around the clock.

Our district also supports the Nepal Dalit Womens Upliftment centre which provides a safe, secure and loving home for poor, abandoned and orphaned Dalit (Untouchable) girls and boys. Tragically the school and orphanage were severely damaged but thankfully all the children survived. We are working to rebuild the centre.

ello Readers, Cold isn’t it! Well, it is winter and the other horrible thought is… it’s tax time again.

So throw another taxman… er… log on the fire and keep yourselves warm while catching up on the happenings in this issue.

Happy 50th birthday to the Yankalilla Over 50’s Club. They will be celebrating this milestone over their monthly luncheon this month, complete with entertainment. We will have a report in the July issue.

Speaking of birthdays, Sea Dragon Fitness, Swim and Aqua is one year old this month.

Congratulations to Mel and everyone involved.

Yankalilla Council has a supplementary election this month with four candidates in the running.

both hoping for a boost in tourism from this project as it is on the boundary of both councils.

This is of course very likely with hundreds maybe even thousands - of people expected to use the retreat or at least come for a look.

Certainly it will be a drawcard for the area.

Having been plagued by internet and computer problems for the last several months, it looks like most issues are now solved - until the next problem pops up - so hopefully things will be running smoother than they have been… moving forward!

Giant squid sighted at Second Valley

O

n the weekend of the 16-17th May, members of the Second Valley Community got together to liven up a somewhat bland concrete picnic table at the foreshore precinct. From an idea mooted by Second Valley Progress Association member Lyndell, and with some local sponsorship, a group got together and mosaicked a giant squid and his four starfish friends. The weather that weekend was glorious which attracted many people down to the foreshore and several onlookers were fascinated by how the design was taking shape and even asked if they could stay and participate. There are plans to do more of the mosaic artwork within the Second Valley area including the other concrete table at the foreshore, two under the pines adjacent to the caravan park and at Jaitjakawengga Reserve. “St Petersburg in the 18th & 19th Century” Presented by Dr Alexey Makhrov This exciting lecture documents the development of St Petersburg, founded in 1703 as a fortress in a remote area of the Baltic Sea, into one of the grandest capitals of Europe.

The planning and building of the city supervised by the Chancellery of Construction were based on rational principles which ensured regularity, visual coherence and magnificence in architecture. For those of you who are planning to or have visited this historic city, Dr Makhrov will rekindle your appetite or bring back memories.

Dr Mahkrov studied art history at the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg and obtained a PhD in architectural history at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, in 1998. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher of Russian art criticism of the nineteenth century at the University of Exeter, England, before moving to Switzerland in 2003.

Having obtained a master’s degree in International History and Politics at the Graduate Institute of International Development Studies in Geneva, he

has taught courses on art and history in Zurich and Geneva.

He has worked as a lecturer on cultural tours to Russia and Switzerland since 1998.

Food Revolution Day

n Friday 15 May more than 100 ‘squash it sandwiches’ were made by students at Investigator College as part of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day - a global campaign aimed at exciting and educating children on healthy eating. Using Jamie’s recipe and a mountain of

fresh, healthy vegetables students chopped, mashed and mixed up their sandwich fillings which included radish, peas, herbs and sprouts!

It is anticipated that more than 250,000 children worldwide joined the Investigator College students as they tuned in to watch Jamie walk them through their cooking lesson via his website.

The students really enjoyed the activity and surprised themselves with the tasty (and very healthy) sandwiches they made. Students throughout the Junior School did not miss out on the positive impact of the day thanks to Tanya Sweet and Brett Stringer, Managers of the local Woolworths store who supplied every Junior School student with a piece of fruit to enjoy.

National Stronger Regions Fund: Round Two now open

L

ocal councils and incorporated not-for-profit organisations can now apply for funding of between $20,000 and $10 million for capital infrastructure projects under Round Two of the $1 billion National Stronger Regions Fund.

The Australian Government is pleased with the level of interest shown in the programme to date, with 405 applications received under Round One, seeking funding of over $1.2 billion.

I encourage applicants to put forward projects that demonstrate strong economic outcomes, especially in disadvantaged regions, to give themselves the best opportunity for success under Round Two. Feedback will soon be available for unsuccessful applicants from Round One who wish to strengthen their application and re-apply for funding.

The funding was targeted in such a way to ensure successful projects deliver strong outcomes for local communities.

Following feedback from various stakeholders, the Australian Government has made some amendments to the National Stronger Regions Fund to better reflect the objectives of the

programme.

Under Round Two, $25 million will be quarantined for those projects seeking funding of $1 million or less.

This will allow a broader reach across Australia’s regions and better reflect the national intent of the programme.

Applicants will also be able to submit up to two applications under this Round.

The Australian Government provided $212 million to successful applicants under Round One of the programme.

Guided singing workshops are for all people who enjoy singing and provide the opportunity for participants to explore their voices and feel the enjoyment of singing in a group.

Combining their singing experience and knowledge, local women, Margie Russell of Hay Flat and Libby Druce of Inman Valley are offering singing workshops. Their love of singing and belief in the benefits of singing brings has led them to establishing The Tonto Road Singing Company.

A Harmony Singing Workshop will be held on Saturday 20 June 2015 at Hay Flat. Songs from many genres will be used to teach harmony and involve singers in a rich and joyful singing experience. Registrations for the workshop are required by 6 June 2015. Gone Cruising

he day dawned with a gentle light and the breeze that filled the morning air was full of the warmth and smell of the early turning of autumn leaves.

This morning the mind turned to what adventures and sights we might find on this beautiful Saturday.

With trusty iron steed quietly rumbling between my legs, the better half safely stowed on the back, the back roads of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand beckoned for our enjoyment.

We set off from our home in Waipawa, Central Hawkes Bay, by joining up with Middle Road that runs north and south along the Tuki Tuki river.

Heading north along the road we aimed for Havelock North. A great place to do lunch along the way, with its alfresco cafes and restaurants for a more up market feed.

The road was pleasantly free of cars and trucks and more importantly agricultural machinery with attached farming implements. There is nothing worse than coming around a corner and having nowhere to go as a tractor with attached harrow or such like implement straddles the road at a very pedestrian 25km and hour and whilst you decelerate with howling tyres from a very respectable 100km/h.

Thankfully this was not the case on today's little venture.

After a blissful cruise through tight and sweeping corners, the road dappled by the shadows of arching trees overhead, the grey winding ribbon of the road disappearing around an endless series of corners,

then opening up onto thundering straights that had more patches and bumps than my 12 year old jeans, we eventually arrived at the outskirts and environs of Havelock North. After a suitable stop for a late lunch, coffee and toilet break at one of the local watering holes, we slung our legs over the saddle of my Kawasaki 1600 Vulcan and fired the big twin back into life.

Next stop Te Mata peak with a killer view over most of northern Hawkes Bay, then a return to earth from the lofty heights of that ancient shell incrusted bastion.

This time we wended our way firstly west towards the Ruahinie mountain range and then turning south to head back along highway 50 that runs parallel to the Ruahinie’s. Along the way we took the time to stop at places that caught our attention, fired up the camera, and captured some of the breath-taking views.

Finally on striking the Waipawa river valley, turned left to make the final run home through orchards and vineyards that meandered along the banks of that slow winding river. Finally we returned home with the evening sunlight beginning to colour the far ranges a soft purple and blue as we made our tired but satisfied way back to our home overlooking the valley that had been our companion for parts of the day.

nce again it was delightful to see so many members at the May session. A warm welcome was given to our ‘cruising enthusiast’ Bill Truslove, Pastelist. As requested his subject was ‘Still Life’. After setting up a glass bowl full of oranges, with a few on the side, on a cloth covered table Bill proceeded to discuss preparation techniques and light and shade on the objects displayed. He began his demonstration by drawing the outline of the Still Life in chalk on grey pastel paper – the chalk later being dusted off leaving a feint working outline. Once the colouring in stage began Bill looked for block shapes in general on the objects before adding details of different colours (light and dark) which eventually built up the whole picture. With Still Life artificial lighting is best for providing highlights and shadow because it can be controlled. Sunlight has a

purer light but has the habit of constantly moving which can be a difficulty when tackling a Still Life.

After lunch Bill was requested to do a second demonstration using one of his holiday sketches as the subject. He showed how it was possible using simple techniques to convert a sketch into a pleasing and vibrant picture. I think that this s e s s i o n w a s a n e n j o y ab l e experience for all.

would like to bury the allegations and rumours that I am organising bus tours in direct competition with the District Council of Yankalilla Seniors 65’s and mystery and movie shopping trips. In March 2015 my family and friends from Goolwa, Pt Elliot, Victor Harbor, Yankalilla, Edwardstown with myself took the opportunity to have a friendly day out together to Glenelg and surrounds with Genesis Coaches. As a courtesy I informed the senior staff member who is organising the council tours weeks before about the trip to Glenelg. As to the allegation that I set up a mystery bus tour in direct competition with council’s tour on the same day and had another planned for April on the same day as council’s tour is certainly not true. I can assure everybody that I am not in the business of being a tour operator.

Historical Society of Yankalilla

A

mong the early settlers to this district were Thomas* and Mary Roads**. Arriving in South Australia on board the Trafalgar in 1849 Thomas worked as a carpenter around Adelaide until the gold rush to Victoria began whereupon he and his three sons, George, Richard and Frank, rode overland to Forest Creek in a bullock dray.

Their claim yielding 800 sovereigns’ worth of gold, the Roads returned to South Australia and moved to Yankalilla shortly afterwards. With his sons, Thomas set up a carpentry business which flourished.

When moves were put in place to build an Anglican church in Yankalilla the land was purchased from Thomas Roads in 1854. Roads owned 160 acres of land along the southern side of the main road which he had bought in 1852 with the money he had made at the goldfields.

In 1857 Thomas Roads built Christ Church, and, for his children, most of the old cottages between Foodland and Christ Church. Thomas’s original house is still standing at 149 Main South Road. It was known as Forge House because it later belonged to Charles Manisty, a blacksmith.

Thomas later lived at 144 Main South Road in the house he had built for his son Richard in around 1860. Thomas lived there until his death in 1892.

In the late 1850s and 60s, Thomas Roads’ son Dick was kept busy driving a wagon pulled by horses, and sometimes bullocks, past the school to the jetty. At that time Yankalilla and Normanville had three flour mills, five stores, two breweries, four blacksmiths, three hotels and five churches.

By 1869 the next generation of the Roads family were known for their involvement with the Yankalilla band. In that year George Roads, a strong swimmer, had attempted to save the band’s drummer, Aaron Ryles, from drowning at Normanville. On a picnic outing, Ryles had fallen overboard from a boat on which the band was performing. Roads was awarded a Royal Humane Society medal for his efforts. By 1882 George was the conductor of the Yankalilla band. The district enthusiastically supported the band, which gave performances over a long period. They provided music at local functions and taught those with some ability to play the instruments. At one stage the band was known as the Roads Brothers Band.

When the Refreshment Room in the Showgrounds was built in 1900 George Roads was the successful tenderer. A stone building 36 feet by 18 feet with a height of 9 feet, it cost 119 pounds, ten shillings and sixpence.

In 1907 Christ Church at Yankalilla was beautified, the pews and choir stall donated by

Fred Malcolm Graham of Bungala House. These had been made by George Roads who had followed his father into carpentry, his skills of benefit to Christ Church on many occasions. It was Roads who installed the Morse memorial window.

In April 1938 Mrs. Henry Roads proposed that a Ladies’ Guild be formed at Christ Church. Later that month the inaugural meeting was held, with Rector Drummond in the chair. Mrs. Roads was elected President, with Mrs. Barton as Secretary.

The Guild’s main function was to organise fundraising and social events. The annual fete was the Guild’s main fundraising event, a welcome source of income for the church.

George Roads did a lot of work for Christ Church over many years,. A memorial stained glass window on one of the church walls was dedicated to Roads and his wife, Susannah, the gift of their children. The window was unveiled by their daughter, Clara Roads, on Sunday, 16th December, 1923.

In May 1924 Charles Roads, another publicspirited member of the family, had attended a meeting of the Soldiers Memorial Parks Committee at the Yankalilla Council chambers.

The founding of the Yankalilla Memorial Park made possible the establishment of the sporting complex which is considered unique in our state.

In 1960 the Roads family purchased an organ from St. Peter’s Cathedral at a cost of 90 pounds. The organ, donated to Christ Church, had been used for St. Peter’s Girls’ School, then located in Kermode Street and attended by some of the grandchildren of George and Suzannah Roads.

When, in July 1982, the 125th anniversary of Christ Church, Yankalilla, was celebrated, there was a gathering of old scholars who had attended the church school which closed in 1927. Of the 21 old scholars who attended, Wilfred Roads - a son of George - at the age of 93, was the oldest.

H

ow does a funeral parlour in the main shopping area of Yankalilla enhance the visitors experience to our district?!?

All I have read indicates that this council want to entice the tourist dollar. Maybe they are going to advertise Yankalilla as their final destination ever.

I am not against this district having a funeral parlour as they are a necessary part of life but I am against our main shopping precinct having one slap bang in its midst.

It is going to be situated between Yankalilla Hotel and Browse and Save.

How is it going to be a great experience for anyone to watch a hearse driving to and from the preparation room (which is in the plan) again and again, and yes it will be driving between the hotel and Browse and Save.

The ratepayers living behind the hotel and banks have a huge problem accessing Main South Road now, lets toss in a funeral (up to 3 a week) as in the plan and see how parking and access to the main road goes then.

The facility is only meant to have room for around 50 people to attend a funeral but how does that work in the country. They are meant to share parking with the hotel but we will see how that goes. No wait the council town planner only thinks of a park per person is enough as everyone travels to a funeral together. Again how does that work in the country?!?

Councillors are elected to listen to the ratepayers, please make your concerns known.

o, I heard on the grapevine that there was a new funeral parlour development in Yankalilla. On investigation I found out that it is going between the Yankalilla Hotel and Browse In and Save. I can’t wait to be laughing and joking having lunch with the girls and seeing a

I am not in any way against having a funeral parlour open up in Yankalilla however I do believe that its proposed position right in the centre of Yankalilla’s CBD is not the best destination. My concerns are parking and traffic flow onto Main South Road. On attending the DAP meeting where the proposal was discussed and approved I was disgusted on how little time was spent on the matter. One DAP member who voiced his concerns was quickly shot down with no discussions held and another Dap member stated that having a shared car park with the hotel would not be a problem as people only attend the hotel for dinner and a drink. However the hotel is open 9am til late most days and there are people in the community and tourists who patronise the hotel during business hours. So if the shared car park for the funeral development is full of hotel patronage where do mourners park… side streets and other business car parks? I even wrote a letter to council voicing my concerns that was signed by my fellow neighbours however our opinions didn’t matter as only the opinion of the direct neighbours count. I found this very annoying as many of the neighbouring properties are leased so the letters go to the land owners not the actual business that the development affects. The council has, yes done everything by the book, however doesn’t common sense have a role here. The principle role of council is to act as a representative, informed and responsible decisionmaker in the interest of its community and I believe the Yankalilla District Council has not. The strategic plan of the council is to entice the tourism dollar and by having an aesthetically pleasing streetscape with functionality. However, they approve a two story building across from where tourism bus’s stop to use amenities and the first port of call into the Yankalilla District, will be a vision of a funeral parlour. Secondly in the strategic plan there was a point to beautify the Yankalilla Cemetery.

Why not build a chapel on site that could be rented out by council to generate money for the council and possibly go towards paying for the upkeep of the grounds. This will keep the street less congested and parking problems to a minimum.

In a recent Victor Harbor times the Mayor and Mr Putland voiced how we have a great deal of pride in Yankalilla and businesses, tourists and ratepayers should work as a combined effort to improve the area. I believe permanent residents should also be added to the fold as they are the people who spend money and time in the area on a day to day basis.

What will happen to our historical Yankalilla and Districts Public Bullaparinga Cemetery?

W

e are learning from our early settlers every day. But, because our Rapid Bay District Council that provided for Wirrina, Second Valley, Parawa, Range Road, Rapid Bay and Cape Jervis was closed and consolidated into the Yankalilla and Districts Council, we have lost or are losing our local history. Who is in St James Church and Cemetery and the Yankalilla and Districts Public Bullaparinga Cemetery? Don’t know, don’t care? Well, the earlier settlers in these areas did care about our area.

They built churches, cemeteries, roads and infrastructure for our areas.

The Manisty family donated to us a public cemetery area for our community members, which is the Bullaparinga Cemetery. This land is a reserve for our community. Our former Rapid Bay District Council house still stands in Bullaparinga Crescent, below the Yankalilla and Districts Public (Bullaparinga) Cemetery.

I was so distressed to hear that the curator for the Yankalilla and Districts Public Cemetery and our Yankalilla and Districts Bullaparinga Public Cemetery say “No-one wants to go there, ha ha” referring to the Bullaparinga site. I want to be buried there with my family and descendants. My brother does too. I don’t want to be forced to be buried in the cemetery at Yankalilla when my family, descendants and friends are at Bullaparinga.

The Bennett’s, Jones’s, Wenham’s, Cole’s and many more families are

living around Delamere and the Bullaparinga cemetery.

Please tell the Yankalilla Council that we DO want to be in and with our descendants of our historical early settlers. The ones that worked the land and built the houses, had the farms and created the areas we now live in.

We don’t even have a roadside sign like the cemetery at Yankalilla. Is our Manisty family donated Yankalilla and Districts Public Bullaparinga Cemetery going to be just a fenced off area saying ‘that’s a cemetery!’

I have put together a folder and computer disk copy of the folder contents about our Yankalilla and Districts Public Bullaparinga Cemetery. It can be viewed in the Yankalilla Library, Yankalilla Historical Society, Genealogy and Heraldry Society (Unley), Adelaide Library, Victor Harbor Library and individuals have also purchased copies.

Without pressure on Yankalilla Council, I fear that the Bullaparinga Cemetery will be lost.

n response to the article ‘Woah’ in the May edition I would like to say how disgusted I am to hear that children are not safe in a State school from religious interference. No details were given about the audience that was addressed by the SMG (schools ministry group) mob i.e was it for Christian children there with parental permission, was it the whole school except for those who wanted to opt out etc. Special Religious Instruction (SRI) can be offered in South Australian schools with conditions.

The following extract from a website that explains the current situation gives one of the conditions.

“It is important to note that even in those states and territories where the provision of SRI is mandatory, the attendance of individual students is not. All states and territories make provision for parents to withdraw their children from SRI classes.”

Why do these so called responsible Christian adults target young children? These people who feel they are morally superior and righteous because they follow the teaching of a prophet that more than likely didn’t exist or if he did exist there is no evidence that he performed miracles.

They believe that they know what is best for our children. They believe that their superstitious mythology is fact and they present it as such. There is no objectivity in their teaching.

Children do not question the validity of information that they are given.

They simply do not have the mental resources and general knowledge to analyse the information critically nor do they have the confidence to scrutinize and question adults.

Children in the school environment expect to be told the truth. They are given information all the time and they are in the habit of just accepting it. They also would be feeling ostracized if their parents withdrew them from a school event that the rest of their school mates attended.

The truly wicked part of this is that these religious peddlers know exactly what they are doing. They know that children are soft targets and once a young mind has been captured it will be captured for life. Of course they will come up with the usual religious mumbo jumbo about saving the children and spreading god’s word, giving people hope, being god’s servants, making sure that the children will enter the Kingdom of god etcetera. The real reasons are to keep the church going, to make sure that there are up and coming souls to put money in the collection bowl, to make sure that their numbers don’t

dwindle to the point that the safety they feel due to their numbers fades away and their sanity becomes a question of doubt, to guard against becoming an irrelevant cult and of course the number one reason is to protect their jobs.

All the woahing in the article would actually mean something if it came from the audience rather than the performer. The Woahing seems to be overcompensating for something.

Perhaps Mr. Woah (the author's name was not included in the article) is feeling nervous about disrespecting the rights of the parents of the children he has been trying to convert to his religion. Does he think his is the only belief system and he has the right to decide what other parents children should believe? What about his golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you? Would he have others attempt to subtly or otherwise convert his children to some other cult or religion? When will the satanic worshipers have their session with the kids? Could you refuse them, and when do all the rest of the religions have their go? Is the common sense of the principle of secular state schools becoming obvious? I would suggest another golden rule; Do nothing unto other people’s children.

Whatever the careful wording used to describe the intent of these sessions it is clear to me that this is government sanctioned grooming of children to become Christians. The grooming begins with puppets and good fun presentations but soon turns to burning in hell and living in fear of supernatural beings. This is pollution for healthy young minds.

Of course these sessions have been made possible by the Pastoral Care Workers (PCW’s). The reader might not be aware that the Abbott Government allocated many millions of dollars to employ strictly religious people to act as counsellors in schools. Qualified non religious counsellors are not funded. This by any standard is blatant in your face undeniable discrimination. No other employer in Australia would get away with excluding better qualified people on the grounds of their religion or lack of. The government is messing with the name and job description of this outrageous scheme but it is still irrational and unjustifiable. Please note I am not against counsellors in schools.

Now we cannot expect the government to act morally or ethically and nor do they profess to.

Apparently it is Mr Woah and the SMG (schools ministry group) who have the handle on morals and ethics.

They are such experts that they take on the onerous task of teaching our children how to think and behave.

You might just be tempted to think that these morals officers would reject discrimination. You might just think they would apply the golden rule and insist that the government treat candidates for school counsellor

positions equally. No, the silence coming from the religious sector is deafening. I wonder if Jacinta Baldwin, Gina Hunt and the rest of the PCW’s are comfortable knowing that they have been unfairly awarded jobs not on their merits but because of their religious affiliations. I suppose if it is alright for Cardinal George Pell to sell his soul to the lawyers then it is ok for a few PCW’s to sell theirs to the Abbott Government. Maybe we should change the golden rule to ‘do anything you like to others as long as someone has told you that it’s alright to do so”. The word ‘hypocrite’ springs to my mind.

My last word on this sorry affair is that it will become sorrier. Abbott's attempt to rebuild the faith of the Australian people in religious leaders will fail and it will be children who pay the price of his high risk policy. If you create an access point to our children the paedophiles will find a way of entering it. Learn from past mistakes. Keep Australian state schools secular.

Drinking water at Wirrina

A

ll ratepayers from Wirrina Cove will be receiving from SA Water an ‘Expression of Interest’ form regarding SA Water taking over supply of drinking water and provision of wastewater services (sewerage) at Wirrina Cove.

This provides a fantastic opportunity for ratepayers to enjoy the security of being under SA Water, rather than the Yankalilla Council as our water retailer. We appreciate the efforts the local council has made in taking on this role over the last couple of years, however now is the time to look at getting some support from the benign behemoth, SA Water.

Sadly there will be a cost to Wirrina Cove ratepayers to enjoy this security that SA Water would provide – for condominium owners it will be an upfront fee of $5,000 and for other ratepayers (non-business) it will be $10,000. However, I urge you to view this cost with a wide angle lens.

Although it may appear considerable at first, if you look at the numbers you can see that in just a few years condo owners would have squared this fee off. Yankalilla Council this year is charging $536 per annum for water supply charge (last year it was $670), and a flat rate of water usage of $3.25 per kL. SA Water in comparison would be charging $282.80 per annum and has a tiered charge for water usage from $2.32 for first 30kL per quarter, $3.32 for 30kL to 130kL per quarter and above 130kL per quarter at $3.59.

Wastewater, or sewerage would also see a significant fee reduction if ratepayers elect to go with SA Water.

All the condominiums (approximately 82) would come in at the minimum annual SA Water rural fee of $351.40

versus the current Yankalilla Council charge of $800. Many will remember that last year this fee was $1,000. For the other residential property owners, including vacant blocks, it may be of interest to know that with a property value of up to $206,000 you too would be on the minimum charge.

On average, by my calculations ratepayers would be saving around $700 per year by having SA Water run the services. For condominium owners this means your SA Water upfront charge of $5,000 would be covered in about 7 years and for other residential property owners 14 years.

Let’s face it, Yankalilla Council have told us repeatedly that they took on the provision of water and sewerage as a social responsibility to our community. They have been the first to admit that production of drinking water is not their core business.

Certainly ratepayers have shared Council’s pain with massive increases endured over the years. Coming under SA Water would bring us into the 21st Century and give us some security being under Statewide pricing.

There are no guarantees about the pricing from Yankalilla Council.

Indeed they may come under pressure to upgrade their standards (out of their control) and this would then be passed on to ratepayers. And who knows if Yankalilla Council itself will be in existence in another decade – we may find we are under another council that is far less concerned about Wirrina.

I urge ratepayers to consider their long term positions and recognise that the security SA Water can offer us far exceeds that which we currently have.

Our property values are likely to increase, and we will have some certainty which currently we do not enjoy.

I urge all ratepayers to vote yes for SA Water to take over the provision of drinking water and wastewater sewerage at Wirrina to protect and enhance this precious part of SA. Come on ratepayers, get on board and protect your assets. SA Water also offers some hardship provisions that pensioners can take advantage of.

alves are helping to shine a light on dairy industry careers through Dairy Australia’s innovative school program, Cows Create Careers – Farm Module.

Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a National Centre for Dairy Education program funded by Dairy Australia and industry sponsors.

Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a six-week program that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way.

Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-week-old calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7 and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost.

This year, eight schools in the Fleurieu region will participate in the program including Westminster School, Port Elliot Primary School, Mt Compass Area School, Encounter Lutheran School, Eastern Fleurieu School, Yankalilla Area School, Willunga High School and Southern Vales Christian College (Aldinga).

Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module.

Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program Manager, Tracy Lloyd, said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools.

With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to over 210 schools across

“Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms. Lloyd. “By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.”

The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave 1,704 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions.

Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives additional support across the state from local companies Parmalat (Pauls), Devondale Murray Goulburn, Provico, Natures Harvest, Yankalilla Seeds Pty Ltd, La Casa Del Formaggio, Dairy Farmers Milk Cooperative, Fleurieu Stockfeeds Pty Ltd, FPAG, Total Result Ag Consulting Pty Ltd, ABS Australia, Fleurieu Country Vet, Fleurieu Pumps, Lienert Australia, SA Dairy Industry Fund, Victor Harbor Rotary Club, Willunga Vet Services, Victor Motorcycles, Hills Farm Supplies and Yankalilla Lions Club have continued to support the program in the Fleurieu region.

“Volunteers play a vital role in encouraging and supporting students and their career decision making,” Ms. Lloyd said. “The program has dedicated volunteers who have knowledge of the industry and links to education and employment sectors.”

Yellow-footed antechinus; the mini me mammal of the Mount Lofty Ranges

T

he Yellow-footed antechinus is a small native, nocturnal mammal which belongs to a family of carnivorous marsupials that includes Quolls, Phascogales, the Tasmanian devil and the extinct Thylacine. They are essentially mini versions of their larger relatives. Their diet consists mainly of insects but may include almost anything from house mice and small birds to nectar and flowers.

We are very fortunate they are still present in the Mount Lofty Ranges in reasonable numbers. When you consider the related large, carnivorous marsupials that have either gone extinct or are at serious risk of extinction, it reinforces just how special these little critters are. They are a protected species and classified as Vulnerable under the National Parks and Wildlife Act and rated as Rare in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region.

In the Mount Lofty Ranges antechinus occur in a broad range of habitats including swamps, forests and woodlands. They breed once a year in what is a highly synchronised breeding season (generally timed in late winter and early spring), which is triggered by a certain rate of increase in day-length after the winter solstice. Shortly after mating, all males die, leaving pregnant females to keep the species going. Females give birth to as many as 12 young which are carried in the pouch. Young are carried around for up to five weeks and weened after about three months. Females build a leafy nest in tree hollows or the skirts of Grasstrees. After weening, the young can share the nest until the following winter. They are fantastic climbers and can even run upsidedown on most rough timber and rock surfaces.

Populations of Yellow-footed antechinus require large patches of healthy native bushland to survive.

You are unlikely to find a Yellow-footed antechinus in the city or suburban areas because the clearing of native bushland, including understorey vegetation, has typically led to local extinctions of populations in these areas. However in suburbs where some remnant bushland remains or on house blocks that support, or are adjacent to, patches of remnant scrub, Yellow-footed antechinus can sometimes be found in and around gardens and houses. They can be confused with the introduced house mouse because of their small size and appearance.

Most people who are lucky enough to have Yellowfooted antechinus around their gardens and houses consider them a welcome visitor because they are rather cheeky and fun to watch nervously darting about in search of insects. Sometimes they take up residence inside houses because of the usual availability of insects and other food items, or the warm hiding places. They have a habit of building the occasional nest (made of paper and plastic) inside lounge chairs, cupboards or draws which can sometimes make them a bit of a nuisance.

However, many people think this is a small price to pay for the on-going cockroach and mouse control.

They are generally more easily noticed than mice because they can be seen moving around the house at night and during the day. They tend to use rather erratic, quick movements which often makes them difficult to observe amongst dense vegetation in native bushland.

Preventing off-target impacts from control of house mice

A

ntechinus are known to eat young mice so will help to keep house mice numbers under control.

If you do happen to have house mice and antechinus on your property, you can use livecapture traps to capture mice as this enables the release of antechinus unharmed. Live-capture traps can be purchased from most produce stores, aviary supply stores and some pet shops. There are numerous designs available which are made out of a variety of materials including wire and moulded plastics.

To reduce the chance of catching antechinus you can use a small amount of grain (such as bird seed) as a bait because antechinus generally prefer insects and are unlikely to seek out the seed.

continue to maintain, improve and restore healthy native vegetation on and around your property keep the bush 'messy' i.e. where possible, try to avoid removing fallen trees and logs or understorey vegetation as they provide critical habitat be a responsible pet owner and keep your cat inside or in a cat run; cats that roam free can catch and kill antechinus join your local friends of park group to help conserve the habitat upon which this species depends if antechinus are nesting in an unwanted area inside your home, consider providing alternate housing (such as a nest box) in a more convenient location use appropriate mouse capture methods to avoid harming antechinus.

flowers. The flowers have four short rounded petals (about 1cm in length); they occur in small clusters at the end of the flower stems. The dark green leaves occur on the lower stems. They are shaped like a lance, with lower leaves often having several lobes. If you crush the leaves, you might recognize the aroma‌the plant is a member of the mustard family. Though versions of rocket are used in salads aplenty these days, this one has been reported as being toxic to stock. It reproduces both from seed and by branching from its long taproot, which needs to be removed if you are hand weeding.

hree dangerous black spots at Belvidere, Back Valley and Kangarilla will be fixed, with $2.73 million in funding secured through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Programme.

The approved projects are: • The intersection of Strathalbyn-Wellington Road (Langhorne Creek Road) and Belvidere-Milang Road in Belvidere.

Proposed treatment: Realign existing Yjunction, install painted channelised right turn lanes, improve sight lines and relocate hazards. Funding: $1,450,000 • Yankalilla-Victor Harbor Road (Inman Valley Road) in Back Valley. Proposed treatment: Seal shoulder. Funding: $985,000.

Spider Bite Recovery Support Group

ello again readers, I hope you are all keeping warm and cosy.

This rain is great, for the farmers. and our dam at Myponga.

Being Autumn it is unusually cold with winter still to come.

Spiders are hibernating at the moment ,but come spring, spiderlings will be every where.

The topic at the moment is the recluse spider. It is an American spider and I have spiders brought to me for identification The Red Cross is sending out a warning that they are now in Australia. Until I see one for sure I won't believe it. We have enough of our own poisonous creatures to contend with. The picture below is a recluse spider or fiddle back, because of the shape of it's carapace. It packs a nasty bite that can very quickly go necrotic (gangreen). Courtesy Andrew Beck Uni SA. A lot of people get it mixed up with the daddy long legs but the recluse body is much bigger and legs are fatter.

El nino is said to be coming back so a rain water tank would be a good investment. El Nino means boy child, La nina means girl child.

I still would like people to drop in any spider they find in a jar , I am always looking for White tails to study their behaviour.

His presentation, while immensely interesting, gave thought to various eye diseases.

The Dentist visits YCCC

ate last term Dr Alex and his assistant Renee from the Normanville Dental Surgery came to talk to the Yankalilla Kindergarten children about caring for our teeth. They showed us how important our teeth are including the correct way to brush, how many teeth we have and how often we need to brush our teeth. The children were very responsive in the question and answer segment and were able to learn what foods are good for our teeth and what foods are ‘sometimes’ food. The visit, which helps the children to take responsibility of their own health and well-being and developing healthy habits at an early age had a profound effect on several children with reports of requests for milk drinks and vigilant teeth

brushing routines being child initiated at home.
