s most locals of Yankalilla, Normanville and Carrickalinga would be aware, the NBN Co subcontractors have been busily working in our area on the fibre-to-thepremises network, which should be ready for connection to homes early in the new year.

is that there are hundreds of homes who already do now have access to the NBN. For people who live a little further out of town, fixed wireless NBN is now available. We are talking about areas like Main South Road toward Myponga, Fitzgerald Rd, Wattle Flat Rd, Yacca Rd, Smith Hill Rd, Jervois Rd, Kemmis Hill Rd, Martin Rd, Willson Drive, as well as south of Main South Road, toward Hay Flat. Cape Jervis wireless is now activated. Second Valley will also have fixed wireless available to them in the near future.

Fixed Wireless is used in area where fibre-to-the-premises will not be provided. When you place an order, an NBN Co technician will visit your home and place a small antenna on your roof, and then the connection box inside your h o me. (2 2 0 mm x 1 2 7 mm) Th i s connection box is what you will plug your internet router into (you will need to purchase an NBN-ready modem/ router).

People connecting with Fixed Wireless NBN may wish to take advantage of the super-cheap phone-calls on offer through their NBN plan, but are still able to keep their landlines active if they wish to do so.

Faster NBN rollout pays off for Inman Valley

T

he Australian Government’s efforts to speed up the NBN rollout are paying off for residents and businesses in Inman Valley and surrounds as work begins to connect hundreds of premises to the National Broadband Network.

Fixed wireless construction has just begun to connect 240 residents and businesses in parts of Inman Valley.

Broadband and phone services are expected to be connected to the National Broadband Network (NBN) by phone companies and internet providers within 12 months.

Suburbs and towns with the worst broadband service will get priority under NBN Co’s new rollout strategy.

ello Readers, The Yankalilla Over 50’s Club turned 50 in June. The club members and invited guests, including Mayor Glen Rowlands and various Yankalilla Council representatives as well as members of many local service clubs, enjoyed a birthday luncheon at the club on 17th June.

There will be a proper report in next issue but this one is out of space and time! Also held over until next issue is the Yankalilla Historical Society article and Rox Rosey’s creative writings.

The first details of the 2015 Wirrina Bluegrass Festival are on the next page, so you can start planning your weekend entertainment schedule for September 4-6.

As I have left myself almost no space I will have to leave it at that. Rug up and stoke the fire and enjoy the middle of winter. It certainly is lush, green and picturesque even if the cows are cold!

Wirrina Bluegrass Is On Its Way

W

e are delighted to welcome the Pipi Pickers (from Auckland) to the fourth annual Wirrina Bluegrass and Acoustic Roots Festival.

Heavily influenced by New Grass Revival and Tim O’Brien, this four piece bluegrass band rejoices in laying down their energetic, contemporary, “fullbodied” style of bluegrass. But it's bluegrass with both US and Kiwi accents – so come down to the festival and spot the New Zealanders!

The Pipi Pickers have played at festivals including Harrietville Bluegrass and Old Time Country Music Convention, the Great Alpine Pick, and Mountain Grass (all in Victoria), and the Redlands Bluegrass Festival in Queensland, but this is their first visit to South Australia. The Pipi Pickers are Barry Torkington on guitar, Garry Bigwood on mandolin, guitar and vocals, Nat Torkington on 5 string banjo, and Jenine Abarbanel on double bass and vocals.

This high-energy Kiwi group will host inclusive jams, teach workshops, perform in the mainstage concerts and be found generally hanging around the festival. Plan to come on down and give them a big Australian-style welcome.

The Wirrina Bluegrass and Acoustic Roots Festival takes on a different flavour this year with our move to a single venue at the Wirrina Cove Holiday Park.

The campground will be alive with music (but don't worry – we have reserved quiet areas for campers who might actually want to sleep), there's a bar and

cafe/kiosk on site for meals and snacks, and everything will be within easy reach of the main stage. Come for a day or settle in for the weekend, and plan to enjoy everything this community event has to offer. Kids' tickets are free – bring your family to hear some of Australasia's best acoustic musicians playing together. Concerts run from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon, and there'll be jamming on site for the entire weekend (and more).

A

captivating evening of cabaret with a Parisian twist is headed to the doorsteps of new audiences in regional South Australia. Country Arts SA “Shows on the Road” presents Exposing Edith, a celebration of the music made famous by the legendary French songstress, Edith Piaf.

Performed by chanteuse Michaela Burger and accompanied on acoustic guitar by Greg Wain, Exposing Edith intertwines the authenticity of the 40s and 50s with modern instrument, resulting in a truly unique vintage contemporary sound. Following a fabulous Adelaide season in 2014 the talented duo took their musical performance to Goolwa, Lameroo and Keith in April and May, ahead of other parts of the state later in the year.

The music is interspersed with stories of Edith Piaf’s life, which is the origin of the songs that made her one of the most acclaimed French artists of all times. Chronologically

presented, the audience is taken on a journey from the street to the great music halls, through her loves and losses, her tragedies and successes and through a life driven by passion and a devotion to her audience.

he Second Valley Progress Association held their AGM on Friday 12 June 2015 at Leonards Mill.

Yankalilla Football Club

e have had a busy start to the year for all junior teams. With some great wins so far this year. The club has had some fantastic opportunities as well. We were asked to do the guard of honour at the first Crows game against North Melbourne. The boys got to go on the oval and watch the Crows warm up. They got on the big screen at the game. Then they did the guard of honour for the Crows. A great day had by all.

Then we were asked to do the Mini half time game at Hickenbotham Oval

South verus Sturt. The boys had a lot of fun running around the oval.

We were also asked to the Mini half time game at the Port Power versus West Coast Eagles game. It was a great experience for the boys playing on Adelaide oval under lights! The boys again did the guard of honour for the Power players and got a few high fives along the way.

Grandparents Afternoon at YCCC

randparents and significant others of the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre’s children were invited to share in an afternoon of fun, exploration and learning. As part of continuing to build better relationships with our centre’s families, we recognise the important role of grandparents and older role models in a child’s life and the we wished to meet and thank them for their valuable contribution.

Our visitors were able to participate in a range of activities across the site while being offered scones, orange juice, ice coffee and biscuits as light refreshments. We thank our visitors who travelled far and wide to share in fun at the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre and we certainly appreciated meeting you all.

une’s tutor proved to be both unique and very interesting because she worked in 24ct gold and pure silver. Carole Bann is one of only two Metal Point artists in SA. Her work is most intricate and can be as small as 6cm x 10cm or 2 metres x 1 metre. Her main subject is birds, but trees, roots, shells etc do not escape her eyes. She prepares her water colour paper with a covering of special liquid or a fine coat of gesso then finely sands it down to form a smooth uniform surface.

The first important rule we learnt was not to touch the paper once prepared, because the acid on our finger print would tarnish the metal. When exposed to air and light Metal Point can change

colour. Gold does not change, silver becomes warm brown, copper becomes green, grey or reddish and bronze yellows or gold. We discovered that Metal Point is the process of leaving small particle of metal on a prepared surface and once there they cannot be removed. Silver point was a medium used by artists such as Leonardo De Vinci, so it has been around for some time. Carole provided enough paper and silver point pens for us all to have a try and it was fascinating how fine a stroke or dark a stroke could be made simple by the pressure one puts on the pen, We had great fun drawing with a lock, wedding ring, scissors’, saucepan lid, and many other metal household goods. Each one making a different value of impression in colour. It is, however, a technique which needs patience, accuracy and cleanliness.

Wearing a cotton glove is a must during the drawing stage. Carole did say that it took her over three months to complete an A4 sized picture of a parrot, also costs can he high eg gold the size of graphite in a pencil could cost $80 but it lasts for a very long time. It was most enjoyable.

Concentration was the ‘in word’ and it was hard to chase some members away at the end of the session. Question; why use metal to draw with?

ocal farmers can now claim a tax deduction on all capital expenditure on water facilities, fodder storage assets and fencing incurred since the 2015 Budget was handed down on 12th May. Farmers can deduct the full cost of water facilities and fencing in the year they are purchased and deduct the cost of fodder storage assets over three years.

On 12 May, the Treasurer announced that small businesses could immediately claim accelerated depreciation on business assets costing up to $20,000.

Farms with turnover of less than $2 million qualify as a small business and are therefore also eligible to immediately write-off all asset purchases up to $20,000.

The Australian Government consulted broadly with communities across Australia and stakeholders told us they

wanted to get on with building fences, dams and fodder storage as soon as possible.

Our decision to bring forward the start date (from 1/7/16 to 12/5/15) of accelerated depreciation for all farmers, regardless of the size of their farm, allows them to prepare for drought and invest in the productivity of their farms immediately.

Further measures to support farmers will be announced in the forthcoming Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper.

Also they are working to assist us with setting up a Constitution.

There is plenty of information available on the Men’s shed web site www.mensshed.org.au and theshedonline.org.au, which has shown us that starting a shed cannot happen overnight. There are a lot of things to consider with OH&S requirements, insurance and more so it takes time to work through it all.

The Over 50’s Club have offered us an area of land at the rear of their property to build our shed. We have accepted their gracious offer with fine details to be worked out but on inspection it seems like the right position with facilities such as toilets, barbecue area and kitchen available so it will avoid us having to go to the expense of establishing our own in the cost of the shed.

The Council are in the process of approving some funds toward the establishment of our shed and the Over 50’s Club have also very generously offered some money towards the building of our shed.

Currently we would like to get set up in temporary accommodation so we don’t have to wait while the planning and building process is completed so if any one has any thoughts on an existing shed that may be available then please get in touch with one of the

If anyone has contacts with shed suppliers or builders please let one of the committee members know as we would like to get rolling on it as soon as we can. On that thread, if any one knows of any tools or equipment that is just gathering dust then please also let us know.

A group of us had a road trip to Aldinga and Camden sheds to see how they operate and serve their communities. It was very educational to see how two very different clubs operate. It also gave us an insight as to how they run their sheds with ongoing administrative procedures. Both clubs have offered their help and several documents that they use which will help us greatly when we get to the stage of assessing various skills and setting up safe working practices.

Those sheds are attached to their respective Community Centres unlike ours which will be stand alone.

We now have an email address that Ash has put together for people to contact us on so please get in touch if you have any questions, we will try to have answers. A Cool Vibe wards off the winter chill in Inman Valley

orty odd keen music fans braved a chilly winter’s night and gathered at Inman Valley Country Kitchen on June 20 to enjoy the cool jazz and blues performer, Kym Mitchell. Yes, the same Kym Mitchell who has sold local real estate also plays a mean saxophone and very well. Kym was accompanied by the wonders of new technology that sounded just like a backing band. We enjoyed three sets during the night, with plenty of free wheeling jazz improv being part of the performance. A top show.

Kym was also joined by Sharon Harding, from Encounter Bay, who made her jazz singing debut on the night. While her repertoire was small, her innate jazz sensibilities surprised us all. Sharon was even encouraged to an encore performance later in the

Frances and Kate Furler and the team made for a great night with super nachos, hot soups, tasty ‘Door Stops’ sandwiches and for those who still had room a selection of sensational desserts. Delicious fare that was the perfect match with the cool jazz vibe going on in the room.

n June we celebrated our 27th anniversary. After the meeting we adjourned to the Links Hotel for a delicious celebratory lunch & fellowship.

Our guest speaker was Andrea Ogier who is an Ambassador for Craniofacial Australia.

Andrea related something of her life’s tough journey since birth and how the Craniofacial Australia organization has given her back her life.

She was born in the early 1940’s with a severe palate deformity with no roof to her mouth which meant she was never able to speak. She was not capable of sucking like a normal baby and had to be fed through a tube in her nose or intravenously. Her mother found it very difficult to cope alone as her father was away at war.

The first four years of her life were spent either in and out of the Children’s Hospital or with an aunt.

When she turned five a decision had to be made on schooling as she did not qualify as a handicapped child

so she was sent to a mainstream school.

It turned out to be a nightmare due to unrelenting teasing and taunting.

She eventually went to an all-girls High School where the situation did not improve. When she was almost 15 years of age she was running in the school yard and tripped over a dog and damaged her wrist. She was taken to the Royal Adelaide hospital where the examining doctor was more interested in her inability to speak.

He informed her that there was a new plastic surgeon coming to the hospital who may be able to help her.

The cost of craniofacial reconstruction was prohibitive, but her father sold a block of land where they had been planning to build a dream home for her mother. Her mother was less than impressed.

The operation took over 6 hours and a new roof for her mouth was formed. With the assistance of speech therapy she learnt to speak and eat and drink... her life could finally begin at the age of 18.

She has gone on to marry and lead a normal life. Sadly she was never able to reconcile with her mother.

Today Craniofacial Australia is a centre of excellence with a multi disciplinary team of over forty surgeons with nurses, speech pathologists, radiologists, social workers and psychologists. We consider that they are well worth supporting as they perform miracles (craniofacial.com.au).

Yankalilla Ladies Probus Club General meeting 27th May 2015 arg aret C a mp bell (A ct ing President) welcomed everyone to the meeting and announced that there would be a special morning tea to raise money for cancer. Special thank you to the ladies who cooked for the event.

Betty Gubbin received her 20 year pin for service to the club and Dawn Barton received birthday wishes. The minutes of the last meeting were read and carried and committee reports presented and accepted. After a short tea break we returned to our seats looking forward to an interesting talk.

Lyn Trigg welcomed our guest speaker, Mr Peter Batty, teacher of English and History at St Mary’s College, who outlined a little of the history of the school. St Mary’s was founded in 1868 by seven Irish nuns of the Dominican Order. The school opened in 1869. The oldest school for girls in Australia provides for 850 girls from reception to year 12. The school has a record of high academic achievement, good music and sports programs, low fees and an emphasis on social justice. Peter runs a program which exposes the students to situations where people need support.

The girls embrace the program and through it develop empathy for those less fortunate. Students spend time with disabled students in special schools, the elderly in nursing homes, help at meals on wheels and have involvement with new arrivals programs. In Years 11 and 12 the program includes work with indigenous people as well as trips to V i e t n a m a n d C a mb o d i a . P e t e r introduced us to the students Anna Stankevicius and Ella Hunt who have been to Vietnam and Jem-Ella Warley and Samantha Gauci who went on the trip to Cambodia. The girls described how the trips had been challenging emotionally but also how their eyes had been opened to other cultures and the needs of the people. We were shown video and still shots of places they visited which really enhanced the talk.

In Vietnam they spent time at ‘Phu My’ orphanage where 400 disabled orphans are cared for. Originally set up by French nuns in the 1890’s, the running of the orphanage resumed in 1980 at the

request of the government. The children and young people of whom 250 are bedridden are both physically and intellectually disabled. At first sight the students were shocked at what they observed but quickly became involved with caring for the students particularly at meal times when they assisted with i n div idu a l f e ed i ng . Two o th e r orphanages were visited, ‘Annunciation’, which they found quite confronting as the children were not bedridden but had poor cramped conditions and there was little in the way of toys and equipment. The children welcomed the attention they received. A third orphanage for boys named ‘Childstar’ was more like a family home with neat dormitories. An education was provided and opportunities for the boys to learn a trade. Many of the boys were good students and keen to learn. Sponsors in France and Germany as well as Australia assist in the running of this centre as well as financial support by the man who runs the orphanage.

In 2014 a group of St Mary’s students travelled to Battambang in Cambodia.

The Providence Centre managed by Sister Cecile Lentibe provides an education for poor children living in outlying villages. The children live in rural villages where there is no running water or sewerage. Families grow much of their food. Transport is limited with dirt tracks the only access and sometimes the only way to reach them is by motorbike. Some of the children in the convent school are quite shy, but keen to learn. They enjoy singing and performing traditional dances and do well with their study of English. The girls were able to use some of the teaching aids they had prepared prior to their trip such as flash cards to interact with the children. A good grasp of English is a ticket out of poverty for many poor children. During the trip the girls had the opportunity to learn some of the history of Cambodia, visiting the King’s Palace in Phnom Penh, but also the sobering experience of the ‘Killing Fields’ and torture centre. They experienced shopping at local markets for food which was prepared by the

They enjoyed visiting temples, having elephant rides and seeing wooden houses built on stilts to protect them from flooding. They endured hot weather with temperatures around 34 degrees and 100% humidity.

Returning to Australia made the girls not only appreciate what they have but has inspired them to do more and may well have changed their career choice.

Peter Batty believes strongly that his program does more to change the lives of the students than the lives of the

children they visit. He says, quote “stop thinking about rubbish and get on with life”.

Our sincere thanks to Peter Batty and the students for a most informative and enjoyable morning at Yankalilla Ladies Probus.

Plastic Free July Challenge

T

he challenge is quite simple...attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July. Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and challenges people to do something about it. You can sign up for a day, a week or the whole month and try to refuse ALL single-use plastic or try the TOP 4: plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cups and straws.

Sign up at www.plasticfreejuly.org Plastics were developed in the early 20th century and were environmentally important, replacing ivory, tortoiseshell, horn and other plant and animal products. By the 1960's plastic had gone from being used in durable items to widespread use including disposable plastic packaging.

Every piece of plastic ever produced still remains somewhere in the earth today. In the last half of the 20th century over 1 billion tonnes of plastic was produced. This figure has already doubled in the first ten years of this century.

Most of the commonly used disposable plastic items are a convenience and the numbers are staggering. In one week we go through 10 billion plastic bags worldwide, in the USA an average of 2.5 million plastic bottles are used every hour whilst over 500 million straws are used daily!

Recycling is important but it will never be the solution to rapidly

expanding consumption. Plastic Free July focuses on refusing, reducing and reusing. Although many plastic products can be recycled, actual rates of recycling are often low – particularly away from home at events, food halls and public places. In many countries plastic is destined for recycling in third world countries with substandard conditions for some of the world’s poorest people.

Increasingly people are becoming concerned about the impacts on food and beverages being stored and cooked in plastic. Common additives to plastic include BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalates, both chemicals which have can harmful effects on humans. In 2013 the UN and the World Health organisation reported that evidence linking hormone-mimicking chemicals to human health problems has grown stronger over the past decade, becoming a "global threat" that should be addressed.

Marine debris is a major issue for the integrity of marine ecosystems. Impacts to wildlife include entanglement and ingestion. It is estimated that 80% of the oceans marine debris has come from the land. More than 270 of the world's marine animal species are affected by marine debris, but the full extent of this impact is unknown.

Of the top 10 items found in ocean debris five are associated with beverages (Ocean Conservancy).

Images of plastics in the marine environment are haunting (5 Gyres) and we can all become involved in the solution. By using your own drink bottle, takeaway cup and reusable straw (or refusing one) we can together reduce plastic consumption.

Our CSIRO national coastal debris survey estimates that there are about 115,513, 626 bits of rubbish on Australia’s coastline. This averages about 5.2 pieces for every person in the country!

74% of all waste we find is plastic.

"The term 'jetty' has been defined in many ways… structure built out from land, made of iron, steel, cement, timber or a combination of these and used as a working platform or for recreational needs… most of the jetties in South Australia are, today, used for recreational purposes… the attraction of the jetty for most people is that it allows them to walk out onto water without getting their feet wet" This expanded book, like the first edition, is likely to become a reference point for students and local historians when researching the state's maritime history as well as a useful addition to the bookshelves of those interested in the past.

his is a weed in the Marino Conservation Park, and in other coastal cliff top regions. Although not common at Cape Jervis, it does occur. Look out for trees 12-20m tall, with dense, glossy grey-green foliage. In spring and summer, 5cm hibiscusshaped pink flowers appear at the leaf axils (that is, in the angle between the upper surface of the leaf and the stem). Fuzzy capsules follow the flowers; these contain orange seeds and fine, white hairs that irritate the skin, leading to another common name: the itchy bomb tree! It likes well-drained soil, sunny positions, and doesn’t object to salt spray, so has been planted in coastal gardens from which seeds then escaped! Watch out for it on the Fleurieu.

We’ll be cactus if this prickly customer takes hold

he south coast community is being urged to keep on the lookout for a dangerous and invasive cactus previously believed to have been eradicated from the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges region.

The cactus, called Hudson pear (Cylindropuntia rosea), grows in dense, metre-high thickets encrusted with thousands of 5cm long spines which lodge in the flesh of people, pets and stock, causing severe injury and infection.

An outbreak of Hudson pear was recently spotted by a dog-walker in the Moana beach dunes, who reported it to Onkaparinga Council. The council acted swiftly to inform Natural Resources Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges of the incident, and to have the cactus safely removed and destroyed.

However, Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges holds great concerns that the plant may be growing elsewhere in the region.

“This thing makes prickly pear look like a maiden hair fern,” said Chris Daniels, who chairs the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.

“It spreads very quickly by shedding tiny segments, bristling with prickles, which easily attach to the fur of pets, rabbits and livestock as well as people and vehicles, establishing new plants elsewhere.”

Rinus Bouwer, Team Leader Parks and Natural Resources with Onkaparinga Council said it was a nasty surprise to discover that the plant identified by a resident was in fact Hudson pear.

“In partnership with the AMLR NRM Board and Friends of Moana Sands, Council has been undertaking restoration efforts in the dune systems at Moana for many years, and this plant would have presented a serious problem if it wasn’t controlled immediately,” Mr Bouwer said.

Professor Daniels said if the cactus was allowed to get a toehold in the region, the consequences would be devastating for people and agriculture.

“In some parts of the Murraylands and the Kalgoorlie goldfields in WA where the Hudson pear has become established, it now forms an impenetrable barrier against people and stock.”

A native of Mexico, and listed as a Weed of National Significance by the Australian Government, the cactus has no biological control in

Australia and hence no natural predators (although a potential control is being developed in Qld and NSW).

“For many weeds, we just try to control them to reduce their overall impact. But this is one weed we just don’t want in our Region at all. We will eradicate them as soon as we become aware of an infestation,” Professor Daniels said.

“The community can play a vital role in the early detection of this devastating invader by reporting all possible sightings.

“To ensure personal safety, the spines must not be touched under any circumstances as they will penetrate thick leather gloves and even work boots,” he said.

Yankalilla Lions Club

ina Hunt was the speaker at the Lions Dinner Meeting this month.

Gina is the Christian Pastoral Support Worker at Rapid Bay and Myponga Primary Schools, she has professional qualifications in youth work and many years of experience. At the meeting she described her work in that role. All schools have children who for various reasons and at different times are emotionally ‘out of sorts ’which can affect their schoolwork and relationship.

The causes can include friendship issues, bullying and sometimes a traumatic event within the family, cultural differences or needing help with class tasks. Gina provides a one on one sounding board for the students who are going through these tough times. She observes the moods and behaviours of students and knows when and how to give them the care and support they are needing. She also runs various workshops to provide links for students who are not confident around others and provides support to school staff and parents in the same way. Gina assists with the planning for occasional religious and seminars as part of the school’s curriculum in Humanities and

Social Sciences. Gina’s being a Pastoral Support Worker employed in Public Schools is expressly excluded from promoting her own religious beliefs, a n d s t u d e n t s t h ro u g h p a ren t a l permission have the option to attend these seminars, but they are not compulsory. Gina is employed in her role by the Yankalilla District InterChurch Council, Mike Cotton a member of the Council also attended the meeting, and presented President Graham Buttery with a certificate of thanks to the Lions Club of Yankalilla and District for the many years of financial support for the role of Pastoral Support Worker.

New Pastoral Support Worker at Yankalilla Area School

he new Pastoral Support Worker at Yankalilla Area School, Jacinta Baldwin, was welcomed into her role with a Commissioning Service held at the Yankalilla Community Church on Friday 29th May. The local churches were well represented and took part in a ceremony led by Pastor Graeme Leske.

It was followed by a supper when people had an opportunity to meet Jacinta and pass on their best wishes for her work as PSW. Her role is to work with the students, staff and families of the school community and support the school in its aim to be a safe and supportive learning environment. Her role also is to link families to community resources and services.

since the beginning of term two. She is settling in well and getting to know the students and teachers. Jacinta is also keen to talk with parents and invites people to say “Hi,” and i n t r o d u c e themselves anytime they see her.

Funeral Parlour

fter reading letters in the Yankalilla Regional News and listening to Mayor Rowlands on Fleurieu FM Victor Harbor 12/6/15 I was appalled by the decision of the District Council of Yankalilla DAP to approve a funeral parlour on Main South Road Yankalilla business and shopping centre with the condition of approval that the Yankalilla Hotel Proprietor agreeing to the applicant being able to use the Hotel car park. The council established parking strategy for the Yankalilla Town Centre Zone for the payment of a car parking contribution in to a dedicated car parking fund for any parking spaces not able to be provided on or off site, the contribution rate was set at $13,500 per parking space. (It’s not for everyone) I can only agree with the two people who wrote into the news letter in June 2015 and I can say my friends and members of the community I have spoken to are so pleased these people have informed us on what is going on in the District Council of Yankalilla. The promise of an open and transparent council at the last Nov elections seems to be failing. The suggestion of putting a chapel on the cemetery site was excellent, bring it on.

Re Funeral Parlour Concerns

have just read your letters regarding the Funeral Irespond Parlour and would like to take this opportunity to to their concerns. Firstly, we would have loved to pick a nice little secluded spot just out of town, overlooking the hills or the water – but this would be zoned rural, and believe me, there is no way that any council (or potential neighbour) would approve a commercial development in a rural zone, and so, in essence we were “forced” to pick a site in the commercial sector for what is a “complying development”.

With regard to the tourists being confronted with such an establishment, we can assure you that we will not be waiting for them, brochures in hand, ready to pounce. We will not be erecting a ten foot “Funerals R Us” neon sign on top of the building (council said no!), and the building itself will be a pleasant looking establishment, tastefully designed, that will have no distinguishing features that will immediately scream “Funeral Parlour” In fact we have put a great deal of thought and effort into designing an establishment that will fit in with its surroundings. Looking at the block of waste ground that exists at present (and has done so for years) this will surely be an improvement.

With regards to the hearse coming and going all day every day, from the “prep room” and disturbing the ladies lunch (this room is just a room that had to be named on the plans –it can be for storage, office space, anything – might even use it as a spare bedroom for when the in-law’s visit!!) – we will not be running around in a hot pink V8 with air horns blasting “la cucaracha” as we leave or return. Our vehicle will be a non-descript wagon style that will pass un-noticed on most occasions.

So let’s talk numbers. Three funerals a week was mentioned simply for the purpose of giving an example. If we were to be doing these sorts of numbers it would only be because Jack the Ripper, or Ebola had

come to town. In all honesty we would be surprised if we did twenty funerals per year. So this being the case, our vehicle would be in transit less than once a fortnight (on average), and not always at lunch time – so lunch girls – the chances of us disturbing you are minimal to say the least. With these sorts of numbers our impact on traffic and hotel parking will be unnoticeable.

When arranging a funeral, one of the first things we discuss, is how many people are expected to be at the service. This then determines and influences the suitability of the chosen venue. Our chapel is designed and intended for those occasions where numbers are expected to be manageable and all we want is to offer an appropriate venue that is also affordable and convenient. Funeral numbers is not an exact science so there will be occasions where we/they get it wrong – but that’s life. We have held discussions with the hotel regarding parking and they have been more than considerate in working together with us. Bear in mind that the parking area in front of our property, as well as the laneway leading to the rear carpark, belong to us (with easement rights) – not the hotel. So the 20 or so times we need it through the year will be compensated for by its general use for the other 345 days. We have conducted funerals at churches, gravesides, sporting complexes, etc. in Yankalilla in the past and are well aware of numbers, and the issues with parking, but this is just a fact of life in country towns that we all have to deal with.

We love Yankalilla. That’s why we decided to do what we are doing. We will be living on site and will retire there. So concerned resident (names with-held), put down your pitch forks, put out your burning torches and give us a fair go. We don’t want to upset anyone and will do all that we can to fit in without being offensive to anyone. Should you have any other concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

las, in the June 2015 issue, B. Reel has seen fit to treat readers to another of his verbose antiChristian diatribes, this time prompted by the activities of Pastoral Care Workers. His/her letter consists of a litany of baseless and libellous accusations and insinuations toward Christians, their faith, their motives, and in particular, our district Pastoral Care Workers. All this venom is delivered from behind the anonymity of a pseudonym. He/she criticises these valuable staff-members for daring to present the Easter story to school pupils. On the other hand, B. Reel evidently seeks to impress his/her own impoverished, monochrome worldview on young and old alike. I must say that if I had kids, I would not want the B. Reels of this world to come anywhere near them.

At the last census, despite the relentless secularising engaged in by our mass media, 61% of Australians claimed affiliation with a Christian denomination.

Some 10-20% of Australians attend church regularly.

But B. Reel, it seems, wishes to muzzle this sizeable proportion of Australians and deny them their right to influence or participate in Australian society.

.Reel's letter in June's issue of the Yank News seems to be another rant that has taken up two and half columns of our excellent magazine. (I wonder if this was an edited version)? This person doesn't seem to be a happy soul at all, surely there is some joy in this person’s life? The Bible says there will be mockers/scoffers, so it certainly got that right!

Personally I think B.Reel is Un.Reel, however he is obviously entitled to his opinions and I applaud the Editor for giving him the chance to air those views.

Perhaps a chat to the Buddha on Sellicks Hill could give B.Reel some inspiration as he doesn't take kindly to Christians! God Bless you B.Reel, whether you accept it or not.

occurred last year in June - brought about by the selfish and irresponsible act of a fellow dog owner!

Sabre suffered ‘anterior cruciate ligament’ damage, caused by the perpetrators dog “repeatedly” harassing him through my fence - whilst being walked “OFF THE LEAD”. She ignored my request to walk her dog on the lead, even after informing her that Sabre had acquired an injury. Financially, I was unable to pay for his surgery and with guidance, treated him at home with massage and acupressure. He was confined indoors for weeks and as soon as he showed signs of recovery, I allowed him outdoors. Once again, she walked her dog past my property - “off the lead” and once again, Sabre was confined indoors. I erected a secondary fence outside my property in an attempt to keep her dog away from him, unfortunately to no avail.

I contacted the council and was assured that they would issue her with a warning. Obviously this had no effect, as she repeatedly walked her dog past my property without a lead. After Sabre was confined indoors for the “fourth” time, I again contacted the council and they acted appropriately within the bylaws. After 9 months of treating my boy as best I could, I was able to walk him for the first time. I’m not sure who was happier - him or me! Although our walks were short and he had an obvious limp, Sabre showed signs of improvement and it was at this point, I chose to acquire a companion for him. Unfortunately, this has recently proved to be yet another distress for myself, as when very recently after “the perpetrator” walked her dog past my property (albeit “finally” on a lead) caused undue stress for Sabre and he has sustained yet a further injury that, the vet has stated is consistent with the previous injury he had sustained.

Not only am I am facing a $4000+ fee for surgery and rehabilitation, which I simply cannot afford, I am faced with finding a home for Sabre’s companion. I would like for all who are dog/pet lovers, to consider pet insurance (if you can afford it!!!) to cover yourselves against these selfish, irresponsible persons that think they are above the law.

Poor “Sabre”

o Sabres owner, I am saddened after recently being informed by a neighbour, that once again your beloved dog Sabre is lame and confined to his bed. I recall last year hearing about the injury he sustained, due to a dog that repeatedly harassed him through your fence whilst being walked off the lead. I know the dog in question and have witnessed the owner walking him off the lead and “out of his control” on several occasions. I have also witnessed him and another of his breed wandering at large. After what happened to the perpetrators last dog, one would think that she would do everything in her control to restrain her dog!

Although you are not known to me personally I and my beautiful little man have developed a friendship with Sabre over the years, as we regularly walk past your property. We also noticed recently that you have added a new addition to your family, she too has become our friend. I hope that Sabre recovers fully and that you receive adequate compensation for the distress that this irresponsible and selfish act has caused you.
