SHANNONS Yankalilla Cruise

T

he Rotary Club of Yankalilla presented the highly successful SHANNONS Yankalilla Car Cruise over the third weekend in November.

Bigger and better every year.

An estimated 500 classic cars, hot rods and custom vehicles were displayed on the oval, along with a fabulous assortment of vintage caravans around the outer perimeter.

Approximately 3500 people came along and enjoyed the event. All were greeted by our gorgeous Gate Girls & Guy. The weekend kicked off with Raunchy Sugar playing at the Yankalilla Hotel on Friday 13th, and then a Sneak Peek Day on Saturday the 14th at the oval attracted a large crowd, with great music by DJ Jess, a stalwart of the Yankalilla Cruise. A mini-Cruise was held in the afternoon, with an assortment of Cruise vehicles heading from Yankalilla through Normanville to Carrickalinga and back. On Saturday night, The Lincolns, who have recently returned from a hugely successful trip to Blackpool, England, had the dance floor packed and the Yankalilla Hotel rocking.

Sunday, of course, was the big day!... and what a day it was! The weather was glorious, and people packed the oval to enjoy music by The Wise Guys, who kept the dance floor full all afternoon. At one stage, we counted 90 dancers rock ‘n’ rollin’ on our huge undercover dance floor.

One of the highlights of this year’s Cruise was the attendance of the SHANNONS SUPER RIG at the event. SHANNONS received 900 applications from event organisers for this year, and the Rig is only able to attend 65 events in one year – and we were one of them! We offer a huge thank you to Ron Prouse, SA State Manager of SHANNONS for facilitating the Rig’s attendance, and also a very, very big thank you to Nick, the driver and manager of the Rig for being incredibly accommodating, and for setting up the viewing deck for people to enjoy the view over the oval (this does not happen everywhere) — almost 2500

people went through the rig! And what did we find in the Rig? The 1959 Goggomobil! ... and yes, it’s the Dart! I was fortunate enough to have a ride around the town in this fabulous little machine with its massive 397cc two-stroke engine (there are lawnmowers with bigger engines!), and loved it. Mind you, getting in and out might have been a little easier if the designers had remembered to add doors.

The view from the deck of the Rig was just awesome (in the true sense of the word). To see 500 cars in all their shiny glory, thousands of people mingling, dancing, eating, and having a fabulous time was just wonderful.

There is a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes of the Cruise event, for almost 11 months of the year, in planning, networking, organizing and more. Each year we work tirelessly to bring Yankalilla this great event. It’s hard work, and we try hard to make it the best possible show for all involved, but we enjoy it and we think the end result is worth the effort. The Cruise Team are Don & Hanna Law and Billy and

Moddy Peel. Rotarian President Peter Hawker does a terrific job of assisting with setup and setdown — he is an incredibly hard worker and such an asset. Thank you also to all our Club members and spouses who always step up when needed – it’s a huge team effort and we appreciate your help.

All funds raised on the day go to community projects, and we support our local sporting clubs, schools, social groups and other good causes.

The Cruise also benefits our local economy, with many visitors staying in the district for the entire weekend.

Thank you to those who came along on the day – we hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did…and remember: next year, third weekend in November (11-13 November 2016), Cruise on Down to the Yankalilla Cruise!

New Owners at Allusion Wines

T

he Allusion Winery in Yankalilla is under new ownership and management. Mark and Annette, along with children Tamsin and Alex recently moved from Sydney with a dream to make some good wine and enjoy a slower pace of life. Mark will take the lead in the vineyard and winery and has just planted some Malbec and Tempranillo vines. Annette has a background in event management and will concentrate on the functions side of the business such as weddings and parties.

They have a range of premium wines at reasonable prices. The Cellar Door has beautiful views down the valley and is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine and one of their great antipasto platters. It also has plenty of space for the kids to run around including a small playground, giving parents the chance of wine tasting in peace. Well worth a visit!

Cellar door opening hours are 11.30am to 4.00pm every weekend.

They are also open from Boxing Day to New Years Day and every Monday in January.

erry Christmas Readers, This is the final issue of 2015, time to reflect on the last 12 months and contemplate the future. It was certainly a year with its share of problems and obstacles... ok, enough reflecting!

The party time of year is here now and all else is forgotten. Particularly if you are a Schoolie.

Another packed issue, extra pages added and production increased up to 6000 for the holiday season. The next issue isn’t coming out until mid January 2016 and will cover through February.

Reflecting on one of our well known yearly events, the Shannons Yankalilla Cruise went extremely well during November - report page 2 - well done to Yankalilla Rotary Club and all of the many other clubs and volunteers involved.

And the next big thing is...

The Normanville New Years Eve Pageant is back. Are you organised? This long running event will make sure the year finishes with a bang! Thousands of spectators and participants are expected to descend on Normanville and it is always a fun filled community event. See page 10 for details.

What else.... any number of things I could go on about but you are better off reading it for yourself.

One thing I will remind people of is to do with ‘Letters’ from readers to be published. ALL letters must have the author’s full name and contact details - even if you want to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym - or they will not be published. I need to be able to verify authenticity. Otherwise...

It goes by the name... Shredder... and it is always hungry. Its light grey skin blends with the shadowy corners of the office where it lurks, waiting, with its green eye peering out of the gloom... it likes to eat letters of unknown origin.

All the best for Christmas and New Year and roll on 2016!

Second Valley Choir: Cornish Carols a feature in Carols Night

any residents of the lower Fleurieu Peninsula have Cornish ancestry, in part from the Cornish men and women who came out from England to work in the local mines.

This is to be celebrated at the up and

coming Carols Night on December 23 at the Second Valley Memorial Hall at 7pm (see advertisement page 5). The Cornish carols are ruggedly beautiful, and will be sung by the Second Valley Choir, now in its 23rd year. A Nativity Play by the local children will also be a highlight. All are welcome to come and join the singing of the old traditional carols, and the night will conclude with a supper of yummy country cooked fare. Shown in the photo are some of the choir members rehearsing for the night.

New Gallery/Studio to explore

ocal artist Christine Gordon is pleased to announce the opening of her studio as a new gallery and gift shop on the Main Street of Normanville. Christine's linocut prints and handcrafted cards have long delighted visitors to the Court House in Normanville and her open studio events have been a highlight of the artist trails of the local Arts Festivals.

As a result of this positive feedback, Christine is throwing open the doors to her studio on a regular basis at 54 Main St., Normanville...the old police station beside the Court House.

“This space has been many things over the years” notes Christine, “from doctor's surgery to bookshop and, of course, it's original use as a police station. It has a wonderful energy,

great light and I've been truly inspired while working here.” The shop will be filled with Christine's artwork including her linocut prints, paintings, collage work and jewellery. In addition, the gallery will showcase artworks from other local artists and craftspeople including Rachel Hare and Rebecca Arman.

It won't only be another stuffy art gallery however. Upcycled and reworked housewares will also be a big part of the offering. Christine has a unique eye and will find quirky gift ideas and repurpose everyday objects as funky pieces that will be unique treasures. This everchanging selection of gifts and artworks will make the Evidence Room a great spot for your Christmas shopping.

Mosaics A Hit!

he President of Club Fleurieu was delighted to welcome 25 members to the first Mosaic Class held on 6th November. Excitement was running high with people keen to start working on their projects.

Some examples of mosaic work were on display as well as a library of mosaic books to browse through.

Judith Sweetman, professional artist gave a short talk on mosaic work and then everyone began on their projects with Judith helping with guidance and advice.

Many people finished their first mosaic ready to grout the following week and ready to plan their next project.

There was a general consensus that mosaics was fun and some people even planned to work on their pieces at home. Anyone interested is welcome to join at Club Fleurieu.

Twilight Band Concert

ome along to Club Fleurieu, 140 Main Street Yankalilla after 5pm on Saturday 23rd January for a “Twilight Band Concert”. Members, locals and Visitors most welcome. Tickets at $5 all adults (children under 15 free) available through the Yankalilla Bay Visitor Information Centre. The Victor Harbor Band has a great reputation and has a fine program planned with something for everybody including the children. The concert will run from 6-8pm with a short interval. We will hear favourites such as theme from “Star Wars”, A Little Night Music, Memories, and I still call Australia Home.

Bring a picnic tea (no BYO alcohol) chairs and rug and spread out under the trees to enjoy some great band playing and excellent guests who will sing for you.

he Cape Jervis Community Market will host a Car Boot Sale on Sunday, December 13th 9am–1pm, in the carpark of the Cape Jervis Tavern on Main South Road. As with the market, a space must be booked beforehand. Insurance covers each stall and car boot space. For this market a $15.00 fee will cover insurance and stall or boot space. So clear out the shed, kitchen and kids’ rooms and make some money for Christmas. With or without a carboot space, there are bound to be treasures to discover and take home with you.

The market is made up of quality, locally created products. At the November market a visitor declared, ‘This market is wonderful, the quality of craft high and unique pieces to be found here!’

One of the stall holders replied, ‘It is a small market but we are very proud of it!’

The market is a great place to do your Christmas shopping.

You are lying in hospital, unable to communicate your wishes to your loved ones.

They are upset, confused and don't know what to do. It all happened so suddenly....

An Advance Care Directive is a legal document that allows you to formally express your wishes regarding future medical care and lifestyle decisions. You can nominate a person or people called Substitute Decision Makers to make decisions for you if you are not able to make decisions for yourself or communicate your wishes.

It lets you have a say about your future care and helps your family, friends and carers to know what type of health treatment you would like as well as specifying outcomes or treatments that you wish to avoid – such as being placed on life support or CPR. Your Substitute Decision Maker can ONLY make decisions for you when you have impaired decisionmaking capacity. And, a health practitioner can ONLY provide health care under the Advance Care Directive for you when you have impaired decisionmaking capacity (a person will be taken to have impaired decision-making capacity if the person is not capable of:- understanding information that may be relevant to the decision; retaining the information; using the information to make a decision; or communicating the decision in any manner).

If you do not have an Advance Care Directive in place your family or caregivers will need to make application to the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (formerly the Guardianship Board). The Tribunal will then arrange for a hearing and they will appoint a person or people to make medical decisions for you. They can even appoint the Public Trustee.

Nigel Morris to head Yankalilla District Council

r Nigel Morris has been appointed as the new Chief Executive officer for the Yankalilla District Council.

Mr Morris is currently the General Manager of Urban Services at the City of Burnside Council and has more than twenty three years experience in Local Government, with the last six years at General Manager level, delivering quality outcomes through leadership, project management, business process improvement, human resource management, stakeholder engagement and advanced communication.

Mayor Glen Rowlands said Mr Morris will be a tremendous asset for our council and his appointment is well deserved.

“I look forward to working with Nigel and introducing him to the community,” Mr Rowlands said.

He replaces the outgoing Chief Executive Mr Adrian Skull who vacated the position earlier this year to take up an appointment with the Marion Council.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the outgoing acting Chief Executive, Mr Kirk Richardson for assisting councillors and staff through the transition period” Mr Morris will begin in the role from 14 December 2015 on a four year term of appointment.

You did not mind losing your betting money.

It was good to see the smiling face of Treasurer Bill Walding back again after his extended wanderings.

Our guest speaker was Kim Fuller from Victor Tours travel agency.

Kim spoke about his adventurous life and the many paths he has taken.

His CV must be at least 100 pages.

Kim spent his childhood at Parilla the potato capital of SA. His family were on a 1300 acre sheep/wheat farm. It was a struggle to make a living in the harsh conditions.

He then decided to chance his hand at wool classing and obtained the necessary qualifications. He also supplemented his income by shearing. In 1979 there was a 10 week national shearer’s strike over the introduction of wide combs which made things difficult.

Kim then decided to join the Army.

He had many amusing stories of his service time. His army regiment’s mascot was a camel and as he was from the bush his sergeant thought he must know all about camels which he did not. He found them very difficult beasts to drive. His motto became “ never ever trust a camel” He recalled a funny incident when his camel was leading a street parade and sat down on the bonnet of the mayor’s car.

After leaving the Army he became a tourist promoter for Hong Kong. In 2004 he was appointed Tourism Manager by the Broken Hill Council. He enjoyed his time there

as the town was populated by fascinating characters such as Pro Hart and the outback artists. He was critical of the waste inherent in many Government programs designed to help the aborigines.

His career took another turn as he became a coach driver which suited his personality as he related well to people.

For the last four years he and his wife Adona have run Victor Tours which arrange tours & holidays in Australia and overseas. It is a family operated business and they believe in good old fashioned service.

Kim is a born raconteur and it was a most amusing talk We do not have a meeting in January so our next meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd February 2016. For further information please contact Warren Johnston on 8558 3076.

Although not enough was raised for his surgery, the amount raised is enough to pay for the cost of Sabre's medication for at least 9 months. am very proud of all our citizens that donate their time to make this district a great place to live. To all the citizens and events that have been voted as our citizens/events of the year. I am extremely proud of you all.

Unfortunately our council doesn’t seem as proud.

The honour board with all your names on it that was displayed in the council chambers has been replaced with art.

It was bad enough that it hadn’t been updated since 2012 but now has been relegated to a back meeting room. When I contacted the mayor with my concern he stated how much the art had brightened up the chambers, is that really needed?

I know the people who have won this award [as all volunteers] don’t do the work to be recognised but I think that they have earned the respect of one and all {council people included] and deserve to have their names displayed for everyone to see.

Stop Malicious Gossip

have lived in Wattle Flat since I married my husband Michael in 2008 and I have always been proud to be a member of such a wonderful and welcoming community. So I am devastated by the reaction of the place I call home to an accusation that has been made against our family friends.

The gossip and appalling attitude circulated in the community is disgusting and I am horrified that this is being spread by people who should know better. In this country we have a rule of law that a person is considered innocent until proven guilty. We no longer have vigilantes and kangaroo courts; we have highly trained and qualified public officials to investigate the truthfulness of any accusation. It is not for local gossips to decide. There are always two sides to any story and in this community only one is being told. Please think twice before you spread what is only malicious gossip, not the truth. If you truly care about the truth, ask the people in question, don’t speculate behind their backs. Imagine how you might feel to be insulted when you are doing your weekly shopping or how you might feel to be driven out of your home of many years because of the actions of one person who may have another motive other than uncovering the truth.

s a responsible and considerate dog owner who enjoys the beach, I do not expect to have to argue with irresponsible dog owners who REFUSE to put their dog on a lead. This is not the first time we have had the same issue with the same offender and her "friendly" dog.

I'm sorry, but I don't call charging at us with our dogs on leads with it's hair raised growling and barking friendly!!!!

The signs at the beach clearly state that dogs have to be on leads 100m either side of the jetty and toilet blocks and "under effective control at all other times".

This woman seems to believe that she doesn't have to put her dog on a lead let alone control it, and she doesn't mind telling you in no uncertain terms.

We are the owners of 2 English Staffies and know that if our dogs behaved in that sort of aggressive manner toward people or other dogs..... We would be reported.

So, beware to anyone walking their dog on Carrickalinga Beach, this woman and her so called friendly dog are a public nuisance.

Law aside - a bit of common courtesy wouldn't hurt!!

parents involved in this type of behaviour – I say ‘hang your heads in shame’. You really need to take a good, hard, honest look at your behaviour.

What is it exactly you are trying to teach your children? Is it to be a coward & not try to develop any verbal communication skills that would allow them to talk effectively about difficulties in life as they arise? Is it to be a bully, knowing full well the relevant teachers cannot & will not respond in kind? In case it has escaped you most of the school community already know that this behaviour will not benefit any child. Is it that you as parents are so insecure and immature that you choose to have your issues validated publicly on line by other folk who are just as cowardly as you? Will you also teach them to vilify their future boss via Facebook? You have missed an opportunity to teach your children how to behave effectively when life does get difficult. If you don’t have this skill set as a parent, can I suggest you go and seek help form someone that could assist you in developing these vital, lifelong skills? Wake up you need to set a better example for your children.

No one said you had to like the teacher but you should at least be adult enough to set a good example for your kids by showing their teachers some respect. My husband would like to add a comment – ‘grow up or shut up’. Personally, I feel our local teachers do a fabulous job in very trying circumstances, the case in point being a very poignant example of what they have to deal with.

Teachers at YAS, you can rest assured that if I have a problem involving the school I will behave like an adult and come and talk about the issue, in the first instance – I hope there are a lot of likeminded parents out there too., I feel you are doing an amazing job & please keep up the good work. To be honest, I am not a Facebook user – nor do I intend to become one if this is an example of how other adults use this medium. The reason for this letter is that I am staggered that people can behave so badly. I am really annoyed that our school Principal has had to take time out of her very busy day to address this issue – if she has had to resort to sending a note to all families, then perhaps this issue is bigger than any of us realise.

Parents, please deal with your issues like adults, get off Facebook if you can’t use it properly & leave our teachers alone so that they can do the job they are employed to do. I, for one, am positive my children would benefit so much more if their teachers were able to concentrate more on kids in the classroom rather than having to worry about hurtful & cowardly comment via Facebook.

Recently my son returned home from school (he is a current student at Yankalilla Area School) with a typed note from the Principal advising parents of the following, and I quote, she is: “aware of some adverse comments through Facebook regarding some of our teachers” This note includes guidelines on how parents should effectively deal with any issues that may arise involving their children at the school. After reading the note it appears pretty clear to me that these disparaging remarks on Facebook have been made by the parents not the students!! To the

he official football season has finished, but there is still plenty happening around the club. Preseason training for the seniors has begun and there are still functions happening at the club.

One of these was the Yank Cruise held on the oval. It was a busy day, with the football club providing catering options and bar for the day. A big thank you goes to all the volunteers and workers that made this day successful.

Upcoming functions include our Annual Christmas Dinner on Saturday the 19th December.

Our Annual General Meeting was held at the start of November. We have a new president in Scott Bevan and Vice President Ashley Bond, and also new committee members- Gary Hogben, Robyn Hosking and Matthew Wilson. Thank you to previous committee members who have put in numerous hours over the year, and they will all be involved with the club still which is great.

On a sadder note, our Bar Manager, Adam ‘Hazzman” Hunt is leaving the position. He has done a great job in this role and they will be big shoes to fill as his replacement. We would like to thank Hazz for his efforts and wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors and look forward to seeing him in action on the footy field. In regards to football, we have retained all our senior players from last season with a few key recruits. The coaching will be led by John Hinge, so it looks to be successful season in 2016. Gary Hogben is working in a junior coaching development role, which involves developing our players’ skills from juniors through to seniors.

A Few Christmas Memories by Rox Rosey

was again in the shed trying to find something (never ever did find it whatever it was) and came across a dusty cardboard box.

Opening it I found a veritable treasure chest of memories of Chistmases from years ago.

My thoughts went back to when we lived on the West Coast, money was never a problem, what we didn’t have we didn’t miss so to speak.

What we did have however, were when the children on Xmas morning knew they had that important visitor overnight, and the drinks of cordial and a few sweets all gone, indicating that that important personage had made that very long trip etc.

In boxes in the shed I found decorations that are at least over 50 years old , still with the strings and cottons attached to hang on the Christmas tree. Not elaborate ones similar to those sold today, but all glass of different colours, and each child having a turn at attaching where they could reach, with us finishing the top of the tree.

Presents had to wait until after breakfast, then wrapping paper all over the sitting-room floor, the more presents the more the children were excited!

When I say the more presents, they were mixed up from perhaps a couple of items that came in pairs. For instance, if for the girls, then they would receive a cake of novelty soap or scent each, if for our son, he would receive perhaps a toy car and something that went with it.

Our eldest was ‘sweet tooth’ and she loved all those tiny packets of jelly beans etc.

Meanwhile, hubby bravely sat there trying to stay awake having been on night shift at the local police station. He had been busy rounding up the merry making drinkers and giving them overnight accommodation there, to be released this morning for their own family celebrations.

Our own Xmas celebrations were to follow, we didn’t have the chook, and seasoning etc for lunch. Instead, our lunch consisted of about three wheat bags full of crayfish bodies (tails were a luxury that police wages did not run to) They

had been on order from the local fish factory for months, a very popular request at that time of the year!

About six of us would sit on the kitchen floor (couldn’t fall off the floor) with crayfish, vinegar, bread and butter, and large bottles of beer between us.

Outside the kids would all be making one big din of a noise playing with and sharing their various gifts.

In the same box I found some of those actual pressies, a few Golden books, used to have dozens, a very dirty Barbie doll dressed in jeans and a check shirt, a couple of our son’s model racing cars, (not plastic either) – plus some games still in their original boxes and still okay to play with!

When one of our daughters visited some months ago, she took the very antique Barbie home, washed her hair and she now looks as if she just came from the shop!

This festive season it would have made our Christmas complete to have our children, grand children and great grandies here.

he ‘Friends of Yankalilla Centre’ group held a fund raising event, Car Park Capers, on Saturday 10th October. The many willing helpers set up the car park in front of the Site’s administration offices with a variety of stalls such as plants, clothing, trash and treasure items, fresh produce as well as a delicious Devonshire tea or bbq sausage. Everyone worked well together throughout the morning, buoyed by the perfect weather.

Thanks to everyone who came and found items of interest and haggled for a good price. Many residents and family members attended and enjoyed browsing and catching up with friends.

We would like to especially thank everyone who donated goods and the volunteers who supported the event in donating their time. Thanks too to the members of Meander Cottages for their donations.

All funds raised on the day have contributed towards the cost of the construction of a mini golf course for the facility. The official opening of the golf course was held on 20th November 2015.

Yankalilla Historical Society

I

n November we celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the first printing of our local history book “To Find The Way”, now into its fourth printing. When the production of this book was first discussed by this society it was Roy Williams, a local farmer, who took up the idea, his hard work, his writing skills, and his dedication making the book a reality.

B

orn in Cowell on the Ayre Peninsula in 1916 Roy was educated and began his working life there until he joined the Air Force in 1940. After the war Roy and his wife Phyllis developed a grazing and dairying property at Parawa on scrubland he had cleared himself.

Using the then new practice of applying trace elements with super phosphate Roy converted his block into a highly developed farm that was among the most productive in the state, producing top class dairy cattle, beef, prime lambs and wool.

In 1964 disaster struck when Roy was badly injured by a falling tree, the accident leaving him confined to a wheelchair when only fortyseven years old. Determined not to give up, Roy adapted several wheelchairs, which enabled him to do particular jobs on the farm, as well as to manage it and do the bookwork. With the help of their son Ian, aged twenty-one, and their three daughters, Roy and Phyllis were able to carry on the family enterprise.

Roy had a deep love for the natural world which led him to establish a nature walkway in a nearby conservation reserve. He cut a path through the vegetation and planted many native plants, labeling them for visitors to identify. His sense of humour very active, he invented a few stories about “Halbert”, a resident native he had invented. He even constructed a wurley and

provided sound effects to convince visitors that they were being followed by the invisible guardian of the site. That all of this was done from his wheelchair amazed people, and is a tribute to his strong will.

Active in local affairs, Roy had become a Justice of the Peace in 1949, and took on as well some executive roles in community organisations, carrying out his duties with distinction. For many years Roy’s voice was heard over the Country Fire service during the time he was their communications officer.

In his later years Roy became interested in the Yankalilla and District Historical Society, and accepted the challenge of writing a book on the history of the western Fleurieu Peninsula. With characteristic determination and e n d ur an ce Roy re sea rc he d , collected and collated a mass of historical data on the area. The finished work is a compilation of some of the earliest history of this state, going back to stories of the area’s original indigenous inhabitants and on to the drama of the wreck of the “Victoria” at Tunkalilla beach. In addition to all this he joined the local writer’s group and wrote some unpublished works including his autobiography to which he gave the title “Brown Paper Blankets”.

Advancing years and the health problems that come with being confined to a wheelchair took their toll. Roy’s wife Phyllis became a resident of a nursing home while Roy underwent treatment for a bad back ulcer. In July 2000 he was making a good recovery at the Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre when he suffered chest pains. He was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where a major heart attack ended his life. His name lives on in the enduring legacy of his unique

book on local identities of the past, their stories, and their achievements.

Poison Canister Warning

he Australian Maritime Safety Authority is warning members of the public of the potential dangers posed by toxic canisters that have been reported washing up on Australian beaches.

Since February 2012, emergency services have received reports from the public of small unlabelled canisters washing up along the coast in the Torres Strait, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania. In the last few months reports have been received of canisters washing up in the Western Cape York region and in Yeppoon in Central Queensland.

The canisters contain a rat poison known as ‘aluminium phosphide’, a white to grey solid which is hazardous to humans.

When the canister is opened, the powder reacts with moisture in the air to release phosphine gas, which is also highly toxic to humans.

The gas has a strong odour that can smell like garlic, rotting fish or urine, but it can quickly dull the sense of smell.

Exposure can cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, dizziness, tightness of the chest, diarrhoea, fluid in the lungs, liver/kidney damage, and in severe cases death.

The gas is also flammable and can spontaneously ignite causing burns or small explosions.

last raised this issue in June 2015 when I saw the Council’s info on the new Yankalilla Cemetery plans.

In June I spoke to the Council about the layout of our Bullaparinga Public Cemetery new section and asked why can’t we have a sign on the roadside for our Bullaparinga Public Cemetery like the Yankalilla Public Cemetery?

On 14th Oct, 2015 I met a Council Member at the Bullaparinga Public Cemetery to find it, as usual, a mess.

Why bother complaining, nothing happens. The price of plots have gone up to $850 approximately open to changes - for a single grave though. The Council Reserve has been used, as usual, by farmers and has been cut for hay. Which is good for fire prevention protecting the houses and farms around the cemetery reserve boundaries.

Many thanks to the Manisty family for donating the property for the cemetery use for a life time plus. The Deed is in the Bullaparinga Public Cemetery book and on a disk compiled by K.A. West (formerly Mitchell, nee Christie).

A week before I went into the Council and the Council Member was so excited to inform me that he had the sign for the Bullaparinga

Public Cemetery, it has been made, but its been sitting in his office since June 2015, he said. Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to get the workers to erect it on the corner of Bullaparinga Public Cemetery. What a shame for those that are looking for the Bullaparinga Public Cemetery location.

‘While they were there…’

I

t often happens when ‘we’re there’ - and it may be at the most inconvenient time or place. It could be a car or caravan breakdown, a thunderstorm or flood, a sudden loss of health or even a pleasant surprise.

It was a bit like that in a little town called Bethlehem. It was a world changing event.

But, Where was ‘there’? Who was there? – and, why were they there?

‘There’ was a small cowshed in a noisy little town abuzz with people.

Queensland and New South Wales Fire and Emergency services have dealt with over 40 canisters washed up since 2012.

AMSA will continue to monitor the situation and provide technical advice to local hazmat and emergency response services.

The canisters are silver in colour and approximately 22 centimetres tall.

They have a tapered top with a screw in lid.

Although most canisters are airtight, there have been examples where the seals were broken, presenting a serious danger.

They were there because the government asked everyone to register in a census – which meant they had to get from Nazareth to Bethlehem –about 150Ks – probably on a donkey - a long journey for someone expecting a baby!!

They were also there because the prophet Micah had said, hundreds of years before, that Bethlehem would be the place of the Messiah’s birth. It was an amazing prediction – like other predictions about Christ’s birth!

around and saying, ‘We’ll just have to make the best of this.’

And then, Mary nervously says, ‘Joseph, I think something’s about to happen - the baby’s coming!!’

And sure enough, ‘It was while they were there, the time came for the baby to be born.’

What then is the impact of the words?

- ‘While they were there…’

The fact is - they could’ve been anywhere. The baby could’ve been born under a bush – behind a rock or just out in the open.

If Jesus was born in any other place the world would never have known the lovely, lowly scene of the babe in the hay.

The inconvenience of it created one of the world’s most tender scenes – a scene of poverty – a scene of family – God’s special scene!

Throughout the centuries it has touched and inspired both young and old. What a contrast to the scenes of horror which confront us daily The scene in the cowshed was more than a lovely sight. It was a scene of greatest condescension. The babe in the hay was the Son of God. Christ was born in God’s time in God’s place – in a cowshed in Bethlehem.

Of Bethlehem, the prophet Micah said, ‘…out of you shall he come forth who will rule in Israel, Whose goings forth have been from of old, even from everlasting."

Local Nursing Leader Appointed

ursing and Midwifery staff and services in the Barossa Hills Fleurieu region will be overseen by Anne Price, who has been appointed to a new leadership role.

Ms Price, from the South Coast District and Strathalbyn Hospitals, is one of five new Regional Directors of Nursing and Midwifery appointed across country South Australia during November.

Country Health SA Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services, Lyn Olsen, said Ms Price will help build strong relationships between hospitals in the Barossa Hills Fleurieu region.

“The Regional Director of Nursing and Midwifery will provide additional support to our hard working Directors of Nursing and M i d wi f er y a n d nu rs i ng an d midwifery teams based at local hospitals,” Ms Olsen said.

“Working alongside the Regional Community Health Manager, Ms Price will strengthen the link between

hospital, aged and community care on a whole-of-region level, while sharing knowledge to improve how services are delivered for local patients.

“Ms Price will remain the Director of Nursing and Midwifery of her current hospitals and be based from there, with additional support offered as she takes on this exciting new role.”

Ms Olsen said this model of clinical governance will provide professional development and mentoring opportunities for country nursing staff and is similar to what is currently in place across Western Australia.

“We have worked closely with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation SA Branch in establishing these roles,” Ms Olsen said.

“This follows detailed discussions held with nursing leaders from Queensland and Western Australia.”

SA Water VACSWIM for the Fleurieu Peninsula

S

A Water VACSWIM officially launched the 2015/16 program in November, calling for families to register before December 18th in an effort to keep kids safe this summer.

Organisers are anticipating SA Water VACSWIM 2015/16 will attract a record number of up to 15,000 children this summer, as they are given the opportunity to develop waterproof confidence.

The main VACSWIM 2015/16 program will kick off on Monday 4th of January with some providers offering a program in December 2015. The timing respects the findings of the Royal Life Saving Drowning Report 2015 Data, which demonstrates January as the peak time for drowning deaths and incidents across Australia.

VACSWIM is the largest annual water safety event in South Australia, designed to proactively support children aged 5-13yo in developing a

range of aquatic skills, increasing confidence in the water as well as learning personal survival activities and basic emergency procedures.

Within the VACSWIM initiative, water safety programs are delivered

by Surf Life Saving SA, Royal Life Saving Society SA and YMCA and are offered at over 130 metropolitan and regional locations including beaches, pools and other recreational waterways across South Australia.

The significant delivery of VACSWIM calls for the support of over 600 qualified instructors.

Enventive who are also the parent company of ‘Life. Be in it’ will manage VACSWIM 2016.

General Manager Neil Mackenzie explains that SA Water VACSWIM should not be confused with traditional learn to swim programs.

“Ideally VACSWIM should be viewed as a complimentary addition to equally as important swimming

lessons. It’s about empowering children with the knowledge to make smart aquatic decisions.”

This season, Enventive are encouraging participants to motivate a mate.

“The best way to enjoy VACSWIM is with a mate. No matter what age, children will enjoy partner work with a friend and they’ll be able to share the memorable VACSWIM experiences for years to come,” adds Neil.

2015/16 marks SA Water’s 20th year of sponsorship support of VACSWIM. All programs meet the

Yankalilla Ladies Probus Meeting

A

t our October meeting we had a good attendance. It was a bright sunny day and Betty welcomed everyone. A short meeting followed during which birthdays were celebrated and Lyn Trigg was presented with her 10 year pin by President Betty Brockbank.

Our guest speaker for today was Tony Harding. Tony and Corinne of Hay Flat have recently opened their A r t i s a n S h e ep D a i r y ca l l e d ‘Seavewe.’

Tony gave us a wonderful talk which outlined the journey they have travelled over the last six years to bring them to where they are today.

Tony related how he and Corinne met in Alice Springs and in 2009 moved to the Fleurieu Peninsula to search for a property where they could start a dairy. Tony reflected on his childhood in England and how he loved visiting Cheddar Gorge and tasting the cheese. A cheese dairy was a dream he had held for sometime.

It took several months of looking for the ideal property but they eventually found what they wanted. They loved the green undulating countryside with views to the sea and many rainbows.

He described it as a paradise, thirty four acres and only an hour and a half away from an international airport.

Corinne’s photographs beautifully illustrated the landscape and the love of their animals as well as the changes they have made over the last few years.

They moved into the old house on the property built 120 years ago by the Hutchinsons. They had two dogs and soon acquired two goats and a calf and some chickens. Two more dogs, one named Harley, a Jack Russell pup have joined them. New fences were needed to make the property secure

and work started on gutting and rebuilding the dairy.

It has taken an immense amount of work to rebuild an old derelict dairy and create a modern, hygienic, well equipped and functional place where they can milk sheep and make sheep cheese and feta. Many people said they wouldn’t be able to do it but Tony’s determination and persistence, together with Corinne’s love and support has brought success.

Equipment has been obtained from many places, some second hand, some new. It costs quite a lot of money to set up a cool room. A cheese making unit was purchased from Germany. Further training at Regency Park in cheese making and a visit to a diary in Switzerland equipped Tony and Corinne with the knowledge and skills to fulfil their dream.

A flock of thirty sheep, some Pole Dorset and some East Friesian provide about 12 litres per day and takes an hour to milk them. The sheep walk in single file to the milking shed now and know the routine! Two rams enable them to produce new lambs at the end of May which are bottle fed after two weeks. This is a very busy time for Tony and Corinne, bottle feeding young lambs twice a day.

The milk from the vat is tested once a month to ensure a healthy cell count and to test for the presence of E.coli and listeria. The whole process has to be highly sanitized and equipment spotlessly clean. The vat is temperature controlled with some cheese going to the aging room and some to the fridge to be stored at under 4 degrees.

The production of Camembert and feta is now underway and these products are available at ‘A little bit of spice’ on Main Road, Yankalilla and ‘Bungala café’ at Normanville.

ello again readers, Another year drawing to a close, we are 20 years old on February 7 2016.

I have been kept busy most of that time and people tell me they always read my updates about the spider world. That is pleasing to know, thank you all.

The topic this time is the House Centipede. They are out and about and harmless to humans. As a matter of fact, I have a theory that they are killing the white tails. We are finding them on the cornices and we leave them there. We have not seen a white tail for quite a while.

So don't kill them, they are your friends.

If you try to touch them their legs fall off, but regrow.

Do you recall in my last update I spoke of montmorillonite clay as another method of treatment, well I have found it is available in Adelaide.

Most potters use this clay and it is available on ebay at a quite reasonable price.

We wish all of our readers a very pleasant Christmas season drive and arrive safely.

Sealand Theatre Inc. seeks sponsorship for documentary series In 1836, our venerable Captain Colonel Light, told me his best shipmate Charles Bradley, a tale that sent shivers down the middle of me – a tale that I’ll not easily forget… of how he saw a ghostly-looking vessel in the open water beyond Rapid Bay. The night was misty but the moon was full; the wind was starting to whine and the waves were tipped with white caps. The vessel appeared to be floating above the water, and Light thought he was dreaming…

o unfolds the tale Songs of the Sea, which is currently in rehearsal in Second Valley.

Charlie Bradley – played by Terence McEwen – is the narrator in this story of the sea, of a mysteriously floating ‘body’, and of the links between the past and the present which still intrigue us. Sealand Theatre Inc. is anticipating several performances in Second Valley, and in Inman Valley (if their hall’s renovations are complete) in the Easter and school holiday period, of April 2016.

Importantly, local filmmaker Lyndal Redman (www.redmanmedia.net) is documenting the development of the theatre – and she and Pentecost are seeking financial support to complete the threepart TV series and online product. They need to raise approximately $18,000 and are looking for sponsors – businesses on the Fleurieu Coast, in particular – who will get a valuable promotional opportunity. Indeed, Pentecost and Redman will deliberately feature the spectacular, panoramic landscape of the area, and certainly SA tourism stands to gain from a project which will showcase both human creativity and nature’s gifts on the

Fleurieu Coast!

Sealand Theatre Inc. has already come a long way from an idea in the director’s mind in April, 2015 – a spark that germinated after Festival Fleurieu in which she was involved as producer-director of the My Passionate Philosophy event, and as team leader of the affirmative (and winning) team in The Great Debate (organised by Greg Mackie, with Christine Stokes and Felicity Ann Lewis on the team). With a logo and tag line conceptualised by Pentecost, and taken to the next level by Festival Fleurieu’s graphic designer, Alison Fort (www.alisonfort.com), there is now a dedicated Facebook Page (Sealand Theatre) and an online presence via the director’s blog www.kathrynpentecost.com. In addition, Sealand Theatre (FB) posts regularly on various group networks and Lesley Reed has written about Sealand Theatre Inc.’s A Conversation with Harold Pinter on www.stagewhispers.com.

After a sold-out Honey Sweethearts Cabaret in October (with Judith Sweetman and Jill Langford), Pentecost directed her play (written with John Rado), called A Conversation with Harold Pinter in November, and her fledgling company is now in rehearsals for Songs of the Sea – a much more ambitious project than either of these previous shows. Indeed, starting a theatre company from scratch with no money or infrastructure is challenging, so Pentecost is also busy writing grant applications and fundraising, but she is thrilled at the progress to date and thankful for attracting some great local talent! She is also delighted by the prospect of using Adelaide band Brillig’s The Old Captain song (www.youtube.com) in Songs of the Sea! Written, produced and directed by Pentecost, Songs of the Sea draws on real and imaginative dimensions of local life. So far, actors of all ages (7 – 75), and stages of drama experience are involved – from the immediate area and further afield, in a cast of characters from two distinct time periods – from the nineteenth century: Colonel Light (played

My Mother’s Hat

esident at Normanville on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, CD's career began in stained glass and over the past 22 years she has gained recognition as an innovator of fused and slumped Art Glass, Mosaics and Dichroic Glass Jewellery.

She has studied with well known international artisans and is widely known for her glass designs and unusual techniques.

Inspired by her late mother's love of hats CD's most recent handmade woven glass creation is appropriately named 'My Mother's Hat'.

She recalls memories of all night knitting by her mother to produce a feather and fan jumper with matching beret made especially for a trip to Sydney on the old steam train box car.

CD not being a lover of berets promptly threw hers out of the train window whilst going through a

tunnel in total darkness.

Thankfully her grandmother discouraged her mother from pulling the emergency stop cord for the sake of one lovingly knitted beret.

CD’s personal objective is to never stop learning, continue to experiment with glass and explore its possibilities without limiting herself to traditional methods.

This work has been done voluntarily with most of the materials being donated by Des and the rest being purchased from Friends of Bungala Advisory Group fundraising.

The roses in the beautiful rose garden in front of the cottage were donated and planted by volunteers and the picket fence purchased with fundraising money.

Adam will be leaving us soon for a new adventure but his legacy will remain for all to see whenever people visit the cottage which was in great need of repair. The repair work will continue with Des and other volunteers who drop by on any Wednesday to help. It is a slow process as there are more major works to be completed before the cottage can be opened to the general public.

The Friends Group is under the auspicious of the District Council of Yankalilla and work with the Council in making this park a beautiful place to share.

Most of the works done in the park itself has been achieved with grant money totalling about $88,000 so far, with Council spending about $50,000 and the Natural Resource Management about $40,000. The native garden area and the rain water tank were a Normanville Natural Resource Centre project, while the Art Poles were a

So this park is a community work in progress. The Bungala Park Advisory Group will propose new projects to Council in the new-year while continuing the renovations of the cottage. We look forward to the proposed bridge over the Bungala River, again jointly funded by Council, grant money and developers fund.

reat news at Myponga Beach – One chick born in the middle of October is growing fast and hopefully will be able to fly by the end of November.

There has also been pairs of Hooded Plovers sighted at Carrickalinga North, Carricaklinga South and Shelley Beach, so we are hoping for a very successful season. Thanks again to all beach users for helping these endangered birds.

Yankalilla Historical Walk

n September 1836 Colonel William Light walked from Second Valley to Yankalilla and spent five days at Yankalilla, surveying and exploring the surrounding countryside. In his journal he wrote, “I was enchanted with this spot, it put me in mind of some of the orchards in Devonshire, and I found it plentifully supplied with fresh water.” Settlers began arriving in Yankalilla in 1842, and before many years it was a thriving community. The District Council of Yankalilla was proclaimed on 5th April 1854. At this time Thomas Willson bought land in Yankalilla and subdivided it into allotments, and on 9th September 1857 Yankalilla was declared a township.

What Happens To My Recycling – Planet Ark

H

aving an understanding of the recycling process helps make sense of the rules and why it’s important to put items in their correct bin. After the truck picks up your recycling it gets taken to a material recovery facility (MRF), where it is put through a series of processes designed to separate out the different materials. Fans blow the paper into one area, magnets pick up the steel and light beams and jets of air are used to separate the plastics.

These processes work well for the materials they are designed to sort.

When items that aren’t supposed to be in the recycling bin arrive at the MRF they can cause a range of problems.

Polystyrene foam, for example, is a plastic but acts like paper in the sorting facility. The fans pick it up and send it to the paper collector where it prevents any of the paper it’s mixed with from being recycled.

Here are some tips:When you put materials into your recycling bin, don't ever put them in a plastic bag.

• Don't put oven-proof glass, drinking glasses or ceramic mugs in your bin. Just 25g of oven-proof glass can contaminate one tonne of normal glass, making it useless for recycling.

• Recycle your printer cartridges. The ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' program recycles participating brands of cartridges Australia-wide and can be brought into the NNR Centre.

• Drink cans are commonly recycled.

However, many people forget about the cans they drink from away from home. Don't litter, put them in a recycling bin when you're finished and if you can't find a recycling bin take them home with you and recycle them with your other home recyclable items.

• Keep recycling those newspapers and magazines! Last year, the equivalent of 1 billion newspapers were recycled into newsprint and other paper materials.

• Clean out containers, jars and bottles before putting them in your recycling bin. They don't have to be spotless, just give them a quick clean.

• Remove the lids from bottles and jars before putting items in your recycling bin.

• Pizza boxes, paper bags or cardboard boxes containing food also need special treatment before putting them into your recycling bin. Take out all food items before recycling and remember if the cardboard/paper box or paper bag is too soiled or greasy it cannot be recycled.

• 47% of Australia's household waste is made up of organic waste like food scraps and garden cuttings.

That's a huge amount of waste to add to landfill so if you have a bin for garden cuttings or your council runs an organic waste collection service make sure you utilise it.

Better still, invest in a compost bin, bokashi bin or worm farm to make good use of your organic waste and keep it out of landfill.

Weed Of The Month From Cape Jervis Coastal Community Group

ou don’t see many of this weed at Cape Jervis, because it likes more moisture than Cape Jervis provides. It is a pest though, in many conservation parks and creek beds nearby. It stands out with its glossy, dark green foliage and large white flowers. The flowers are funnelshaped, with a side split, and held high on long, hollow stems. The bright yellow flower spike (spadix) in the funnel centre is part male, part

female. This matures into a seed head. The weed is spread by these seeds, and also by disturbance of the rhizomes under the ground. Leaves are large and heart-shaped. Squid gather for party of a lifetime

S

cuba divers are racing to capture a once-a-year event in the Rapid Head Marine Park Sanctuary Zone in order to record how marine animals are using marine sanctuary zones.

The divers from the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) will be counting thousands of white, noodlelike eggs which are laid after squid (Southern Calamari) have mated.

DEWNR marine parks senior scientist Dr Simon Bryars said the research divers have to act fast.

“The squid are gathering in the waters of the Rapid Head Marine Park Sanctuary Zone, near Rapid Bay just south west of Second Valley.

“This peak in spawning activity will only last for a few months, with the squid mating with as many partners as possible, and then dying.

“Squid have just this one window of opportunity to continue the species they really do ‘live fast and die young’.”

To ensure the squid in the Sanctuary are left alone, staff from Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges will be conducting patrols during November and December.

Regional coordinator of marine parks Jon Emmett said the patrols were aimed at preventing illegal fishing in the sanctuary zone, in order to protect the squid during this important breeding time.

The Rapid Head Marine Park Sanctuary Zone includes about four kilometres of coastline around Rapid Head and covers about 50 square kilometres of water. A map of the Encounter Marine Park including the Rapid Head Sanctuary Zone is available on the marine parks website at www.marineparks.sa.gov.au “Because Rapid Head is now a sanctuary zone with increased protection, we expect there will be more adults and eggs around

compared to areas outside where fishing is still allowed,” Mr Emmett said.

“This is a crucial time of the year for the survival of the species, and we hope everyone will remember that fishing is not allowed in South Australia’s marine sanctuaries.”

Once eggs hatch, the baby squid will remain close to shore for several months then move out to deeper water where they can indulge their huge appetite.

They eat nearly anything that moves, even other squid if no other food is available. Squid are excellent swimmers and are able to use jet propulsion to avoid predators. They can also squirt a cloud of ink to create a ‘smoke screen’ to confuse predators.

estival Fleurieu was awarded a bronze award in the 'Festivals and Events' Category at the SATIC Tourism Awards held at the Convention Centre on Friday night 13 November.

Greg Mackie OAM, Chairman of the Festival Fleurieu Association, said “I am very happy to share the news that Festival Fleurieu 2015 received a Bronze award at the 2015 SA Tourism Awards. This award was a great acknowledgment to our artists, our sponsors and partners - and all hard-working festival volunteers. The Festival generated a real buzz with thousands of visitors across the

region and even more visitors to the Festival Fleurieu website and facebook page.”

he season is in full swing with 3 Sailing days under our belts with lots of fun all round. The 1st of November kicked off the season with good winds and a good turnout of boats. Dave Overall showed great form in winning both races in Division 1. Michael Graves also won both races in Division 2, and Ralph Williams completed the ‘hat trick’ by winning both races in the dinghy class. All agreed it was a wonderful sailing day, though pretty cold on the beach. The 8th of November was still and although some of the keener members went for a bit of a float, most of the action was in the tent on the beach. The 15th of November the winds returned and the, at times challenging conditions, led to a few spills. Dave Overall again starred in Division 1, with Matt Ward running second. In Division 2 Michael Graves

took turns winning with Kim McBeth and, in the dinghy class, George Reeves took out the honours in the first race but Ralph Williams returned to form and took out the second race.

We all had a lot of fun and the girls (Barbara and Gretchen) provided some lovely food to feed the hungry sailors.

The club conducts races from 2pm every Sunday during the season (weather permitting) with sailors arriving after midday and rigging their boats. We welcome the involvement of anyone who has an interest in sailing, wishes to learn how to sail or to provide support to the sailing activities. People interested in getting involved can contact the Club Secretary (George Reeves, 0417348613) or just say hello on any Sunday afternoon during the sailing season.

Increased bushfire risk for Mayo this summer

O

n November 10 the Bureau of Meteorology released its updated Southern Australia Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for 2015/16, revealing that more parts of southern Australia are expected to experience above normal fire potential this summer.

The Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island are particularly identified as regions in which outlook conditions indicate an above normal fire potential.

The increased fire risk may require local firefighting resources to be active over a longer period of time, together with extended clean up and rehabilitation periods post-fires.

The Bureau of Meteorology reexamined the bushfire seasonal outlook following record high temperatures and exceptionally dry conditions across the country in October.

This outlook also comes as a result of a combination of historic factors including El-Nino-linked drought conditions, long -term rainfall deficiencies and drying in southern Australia over nearly 20 years.

The above normal fire potential will present significant risks for residents across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island during this year’s fire season.

OCEP gives third year medical students an exciting, hands-on learning experience where they are able to work closely with senior clinicians in a wide variety of settings.

Grants available to support volunteers in Mayo

ommunity organisations in Mayo can now apply for a grant of up to $5000 to assist the work of their volunteers.

The funding is being provided under a $20 million Volunteer Grant funding round, announced by the Minister for Social Services, the Hon Christian Porter MP. I encourage community organisations in Mayo to apply for a grant of between $1,000 and $5,000 to help make the work of their volunteers easier, safer and more enjoyable.

These grants can be used by organisations to help with costs incurred by their volunteers, and could include the cost of fuel to take seniors to the doctor, first aid training, background security checks or transport for volunteers who cannot drive.

Community organisations also have the opportunity to purchase much-needed equipment, such as computers or printers, so they can keep pace with technology.

In many ways, volunteers are the lifeblood and the

backbone of our community and I’m proud to help support their valuable work.

This funding demonstrates the Australian Government’s commitment to supporting the volunteers who give their time to help others and who encourage the inclusion of vulnerable people in community life.

This year’s Volunteer Grants will give priority to organisations working with individuals or communities experiencing disadvantage, including communities affected by natural disasters—so I encourage organisations focused on these areas to apply.

Let’s Make Our Region Festive For Christmas YANKALILLA DISTRICT, November 4, 2015– Remember the wonderful "DOORS" decorating our region for the Festival Fleurieu? I’m sure everyone involved felt very proud of the amazing sight created by the doors and I believe it would be wonderful to extend the idea to create a real festive feel for Christmas. Let’s do it throughout our region once again.

We'd love you to join in. Paint or decorate a door with a Christmas theme and prop it in your front garden to delight passers-by. Just go ahead and do it! And if you paint a door, don’t forget to post a photo on our Facebook page. If you have your door ready to display by early December, our region will look amazing and bring smiles to the faces of your family, friends and neighbours. And I’m sure you will have fun too.

Alternatively, if you can’t manage to do a door then please tie a BIG, RED BOW on your nearest stobey pole, street sign or post.

t’s been a busy month at the Men’s Shed. We held our first get together BBQ which saw many new and familiar faces. We held a raffle and gave away several prizes that were donated to us. The event was generously supported by the local community. In particular we’d like to thank Normanville Meat and Seafood, Romeo’s Foodland, Yankalilla Bakery and Yankalilla Visitors Information Centre. We have steadily been gathering tool that have been donated to us from members of the public and local businesses.

The 12x12 metre shed has been ordered and the building plans are currently awaiting approval from council. We expect to start building early next year.
