Normanville Sailing Club

here have been two Sunday afternoons of Sailing at the time of writing and both saw a good show of boats with some members sporting their ‘new toys’. It is a shame that the boat ramp is in such disrepair at this time of year as well as presenting a cliff like entrance to the beach due to tides. The Club tractor and members have willingly helped others to stay safe.

Races have been hotly (and less hotly) competed as usual and we’ve seen our fair share of spills into the water due to shifting winds and sailors trying to get that extra bit of speed out of their boats.

But it is all about the fun and the challenge, as well as the frequent opportunity to see pods of dolphins. A great afternoon made possible by a beautiful venue and a hard working support team on the tractor, club boat, and in timing and communications from the Club Room (tent on the beach).

Remember, we are out there every Sunday afternoon until the 26th of April 2015. The club conducts races from

The annual Second Valley Choir Christmas Carols is on again. The program runs for one hour with a supper afterwards. This free family event has been running in our community for the past 23 years.

P

reparations are under way for the 17th annual Normanville New Years Eve Pageant to be held on Wednesday 31st December 2014. It’s time to start thinking about your float or group; we have a spare Whale float, Pirate float, Galah float, a Leafy Sea Dragon and a huge range of costumes available. The Pageant consists of a parade of approximately 40 colourful floats leaving Katherine Drive at 7.30pm sharp, winding its w ay through the streets of Normanville, ending at the beautiful Normanville foreshore at approximately 8pm. Locals and tourists alike flock to the foreshore to be entertained by Ben from Deejay Unplugged, rides and side shows.

Local community clubs and groups provide catering for the night with BBQ, yiros, hot dogs, chips, popcorn, baked potatoes and more. A spectacular fireworks display by Howard & Sons will be at 9.45pm.

DJ Ben will be playing until 11pm when we wind up the event. The Pageant provides a fun, safe family environment for the entire community plus the many visitors staying in the area. Help Save The Pageant Meeting This is an urgent plea to the community to save the Pageant!!!!

here will be a meeting at the Visitor Information Centre on Monday December 8th between 67pm. The current team have been running the Pageant for the last 16 years and are about to step down and

need a group that will continue to organise and run what has become a fantastic community event. If you missed our last meeting why not come along and see if you can offer some support and help save our Pageant, the more people on board the easier the job! Held on 14th November at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Leonards Mill took the award for the Tourism Restaurant category.

Proprietors, Alan and Jane attended the gala dinner with 1000 tourism operators showcasing the best of South Australia. This is the second consecutive year Leonards Mill has taken out the gold.

his C hristmas holidays, volunteer members of the community will be decorating the big pine in the beach car park with coloured lights for all to enjoy. There is a donation box in caravan park kiosk.

The lights will be switched on, on Saturday 13th December. The SVPA will also be opening the Stone Wall Project as part of the Foreshore Redevelopment Project. Everyone is welcome to come along to the car park at 7.30pm.

ello Readers, Merry Christmas to you all - or happy humbugs if you don’t get into the Christmas spirit.

Yes, it’s here again, that time of year we call the ‘silly season’ among other terms of endearment.

You are either gearing up for the busy peak of the business year or getting ready to hide yourselves away until the other side of January. Good luck with your chosen course of action.

The Yankalilla Cruise was bigger and better again this year and congratulations to the organisers and volunteers who made it possible.

The finale of the year is coming with the Normanville New Years Eve Pageant set to roll down to the beach for the 17th time. Will there be an 18th time? If no one steps up to the challenge then this could be the final pageant as the current organisers are standing down after this one. See page 3 and 7 for details on the pageant and a ‘save the pageant’ meeting to be held this month. It would be a big loss for the area if there are no one willing to take it on.

Music is alive and well at Rapid Bay

O

n Thursday October 30th the 33 students from Rapid Bay Primary School participated in the annual Music: Count Us In (MCUI) initiative, along with more than 500,000 participating students from over 2,100 schools nationwide. Music: Count Us In brings teachers, parents, students and the music industry together in celebration, as students unite to sing the same song at the same time, right across the country. This year’s song, also written by Australian students, was “Paint you a Song”.

Varied locations are chosen for the performance, and this year Rapid Bay students walked to the site of a memorial to Colonel William Light. The plaque states that on September 8th, 1836 he conducted his first mainland survey of the area.

This delightful location is adjacent to the Rapid Bay Caravan Park, and the visitors to the area were entertained by the children as they sang.

ome of you may have noticed a strange addition to the community of late. I have been an intermittent fixture at both the Normanville and Yankalilla shopping centres over the past few weeks, asking people to divulge their knowledge of the district and its history. This initial round of inquiry was presented as a general investigation of the area, but all can now be revealed!

I am currently a Master’s student at Flinders University working towards a post-graduate degree in Maritime Archaeology. The purpose of the public survey was to determine how accurately the community’s perception of local history matched the actual physical evidence left by the archaeological record. In particular, I was interested in the remains of Normanville jetty and the maritime activities surrounding it.

The public surveys were followed by an archaeological field investigation at Normanville Beach in October.

The results from these land-based and underwater surveys are still being analysed, and will form part of the Master’s thesis I will be submitting for publication mid next year.

he Shannons Yankalilla Cruise held on 16th November was again an outstanding success.

Despite some concerns about rain the day was perfect.

There were an estimated 620 vintage cars, caravans & motor cycles on display on Yankalilla oval. We estimate that the event attracted around 3,500 visitors to our area. This event is now recognized as the biggest annual event in the district and is a huge boost for local businesses. It also promotes our area as a desirable tourist destination.

Hanna & Don Law as well as Moddy & Billy Peel deserve plaudits for their superlative efforts in organizing and promoting this event.

As the last car left the oval they were already planning to make next year’s event even bigger and better.

We also thank our sponsors and supporters as well as the many volunteers on the day. You are appreciated.

All funds raised go towards Rotary local and international projects. The Rotary Club of Yankalilla is a small and very friendly Rotary Club. We are always looking for community minded people to join us.

omen with Fibre were encouraged at our November meeting by new members attending.

One was Melanie Tessier (photo) from Brittany in France, where there is a tradition of beautiful lace making.

Our December meeting is on Monday 8 in Christ Church Yankalilla Hall, and this will take the form of a “show and tell” where we all bring some of our work completed during the year. This will be a good opportunity for any prospective members to view the range of activities going on at normal meetings. The meeting will be at 6pm, rather than the usual 11am, since it will be our Christmas celebration, and will be followed by a pizza meal.

Evening of Artists

n Friday 14th November a gathering of artists was held at the Courthouse Café over drinks and nibbles. It was a delightful evening with artists happily chatting about their interests and accomplishments as well as plans for future directions in the arts.

The gathering was not only attended by art lovers and established art residents, but by newcomers to the area as well, who were keen to learn more about art developments in our community. Some had moved here from Adelaide, two had recently come from Alice Springs and there were even two visitors from New Orleans.

All agreed that it was an enjoyable way of getting to know likeminded people and supported the continuation of similar gatherings in the New Year, when hopefully we will see more people joining us.

We hope to form an artist’s register as well as planning workshops, group exhibitions and more creative discussion over drinks and dinner evenings.

A big thank you to Christine and Bruce Gordon for their kind hospitality and support in an ideal setting.

heila Matthews was the guest speaker at our recent meeting.

Sheila was persuaded to write books for her growing family of grandchildren.

When she was married to her first husband her name was Sheila Hall, Sheila wrote and illustrated a book each year for Christmas.

Sheila told us all about her

experiences and the publishing of her book, Stan and Cecylia `A Plateful of Memories.` The reason for this title is that the meeting of the son of Stan and Cecylia and the author of the book.

The only thing they had to write on was a paper plate.

The story of two people who met and fell in love when fate took over when Poland was invaded by Germany and Russia and like so many others the young lovers were parted and the course of their lives changed for ever, until they came to Australia as immigrants with no

knowledge of the language nor the customs of their adoptive country.

would like to thank everyone who voted for me in this past election. And thanks for all your support during the last four years when I was an Elected Member on the District Council of Yankalilla.

It was not only exciting but also a great learning experience and I feel I leave with a much better knowledge and appreciation of how councils are run.

There were some difficult moments but lots of wonderful times. Over the years, a sense of team spirit developed. As time went on our team brought together Mayor Malcolm Schlein, Chief Executive Adrian Skull and Manager of Finances Mark Heinrich, who, with their skills and leadership, were able to reduce the outstanding rate debt and put our council in a much better financial position than it had been for many years.

Thank you Adrian and Mark and all the staff. You worked hard to achieve these results. I have enjoyed being part of that team who always offered friendship as well as help and assistance. Also thank you for the caring and concern when I had a few serious family issues last year.

I very much enjoyed being Deputy to Malcolm.

Although we occasionally did not agree, we worked well together.

So thank you everyone, Malcolm, Adrian, Mark, elected members and all the staff for allowing me to be part of the great team that takes care of our district. I will miss you all. But on the other hand, I won’t be far away as there is still much I want to achieve here.

This collection of NEW works takes you deeper into the colours of the seas and surrounding coasts as Rebecca boldly demonstrates her layered techniques and enthusiastically explores texture, form and colour.

Each art work in this exhibition has so much to 'talk about' with intricate details, together with fluidity and contrast. Layers of glazed pigment, on top of rich textural effects create a glow, and suggest Australian sunshine, ocean movement, quaint coves, wild cliffs and interesting shorelines.

During summer our shore is a magical place and Rebecca's work reflects this amazing energy, with both bold and gentle subtle colour combinations. From soft pastel shades of our skies at sunset to deep blue seas dotted with sunburnt rocks, all these and more can be 'found' within these new complex and radiant compositions.

Locals represent Australia in Broomball

ome of you may have heard of Broomball before and some of you may have no clue what I’m talking about. And some of you are probably thinking “yeah it’s that game where you slide the big stone and furiously sweep the ice in front of it?”… Well nope that’s not Broomball that’s curling. Broomball is actually very similar to ice hockey with the main differences being that we run on the ice and use a ball instead of a puck. It is a Canadian sport which was developed around the same time as ice hockey but was mainly played

by the kids that couldn’t afford to play ice hockey so instead stole mum’s broom out the cupboard cut off the bristles, took a ball and a bunch of friends down to the local frozen pond and played broomball.

I have been playing Broomball for close to 12 years, here in SA at the ice arena in Adelaide. I have been lucky enough to represent Australia 3 times with the most recent trip being held in Tomakomai, Japan from the 3rd to 9th of November. Australia took a squad of around 80-90 players and coaches and had our best result ever.

Nicknamed the Aussie Dingoes we competed over 6 days in the World Championships against teams from Japan, Canada, America, Italy and Switzerland. Along with myself we had another “local” in our squad, Christine Filsell, who had her first trip away representing her country and playing exceedingly well.

Typically Canada and the Northern American states like Minnesota rule the roost when it comes to broomball but this time around the Aussie Dingoes had other plans. Usually Australia finishes around the bottom somewhere as the northern hemisphere just has so much more experience and skill. This time things were a bit different for our Dingoes as we had very strong teams across the

board and a really good coach. Our women’s team went through the entire tournament without a loss!

Huge effort. Unfortunately we succumbed to some intense Canadian pressure and lost 2-1 in the grand final. However we are so proud of our effort and have the drive to go one better in the 2016 Worlds to be held in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The Japanese were terrific hosts and the facilities were world class.

Tomakomai is located in Hokkaido which is the island at the very top. We had been well publicised as everywhere we went there were banners and flags supporting broomball. It was between 1 and 12 degrees each day which was a bit of a change coming from sunny Adelaide.

Christine and I went up a local mountain on a rest day and saw some snow! It was pretty chilly but we didn’t think it was much worse than Parawa in July!

For two Delamerians to be

representing their country in a World tournament was something very special and we would like to thank everyone that has shown their support over the years and for this trip to Tomakomai. In particular our families, friends, The Cape Courier and Yankalilla Hockey Club for their unwavering support.

he Australian Government is calling on community organisations, environment groups and local councils to nominate local environment projects for Round 2 of the Green Army Programme

by Tuesday 9 December 2014.

Interested parties can start preparing their proposals by accessing an application form and project guidelines online.

We are seeking new conservation and heritage projects that will make a real difference to the environment and communities, while providing practical skills and training to young Australians in 2014/15.

In July, the Australian Government announced the successful recipients of Round 1 and the Green Army project for the Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning (LAP) area is underway.

Green Army proposals for Round 2 may include: • propogation and planting of native seedlings • weed control • revegetation of local parks • habitat protection and restoration • improving water quality by cleaning up waterways • revegetation of dunes and mangroves • creek bank regeneration • foreshore and beach restoration; and • cultural heritage restoration The Green Army Programme represents Australia’s largest ever team supporting environmental action

ions this month presented the Yankalilla Area School with a sound system for those students with hearing difficulties. This presentation was on behalf of the Lions Hearing dogs, whose training centre is at Verdun in the Adelaide hills, and was opened in 1994.

Many of the dogs are from Animal Welfare Shelters as being purebred is not a prerequisite, intelligence is. The cost of training a Hearing Dog is quite high so the monies from Lions and the public ensures the ongoing project.

Through the kind legacy of Beth Klugh, sound systems are being made available to many schools. These dogs are their owners ears as the Seeing Eye Dogs are their owner’s eyes.

Dinner Meeting

L

ions’ Dinner Meeting in November was held in Yankalilla’s Historical Museum. Instead of having a guest speaker our entertainment was a tour of the museum followed by an historical narrative.

The Museum was opened in 1992 with the Council leasing a couple of acres, the local community furnishing much of yesteryears machinery as well labour and money. Since that time the Lions Club has become a financial supporter of the Museum and has adopted it as an ongoing project.

The bottom line is: If you haven’t seen your museum - DO IT - don’t forget!

Personal Experience Travelling Bible lands

I

mentioned in the last article my fear when an air raid siren sounded whilst my wife and I were staying on the Golan Heights overlooking the Northern waters of the Sea of Galilee. Let me tell you that for both of us the first night in the luxury log cabins was no less stressful. We had travelled from Jerusalem during the day visiting a number of ancient sites; drove through the pass of Megiddo out across the beautiful patchwork fields of the Jezreel Valley; speaking to one another of the numerous bible battles fought there; over the northern waters of the Jordan River where it begins its serpentine descent to the Dead Sea in the South. When we arrived at our accommodation at dusk a gusty wind began to blow but by midnight it had become a raging tempest. It was so powerful that I lay in fear of the cabin being broken up. Every now and then the howling gale pressured the roofing iron and rafters with such ferocity that a sudden loud woofing sound was attended with groans in the stressed beams.

I was awake for hours wondering how this dwelling could withstand such cyclonic conditions. I thought of the disciples in the fishing boat 2000 years before on the Sea below; scared out of their wits at the ‘tempestuous wind’ that had whipped up the normally glassy inland sea into huge billows threatening seasoned fisherman with a watery grave. I thought of the Lord asleep as the waves crashed over the gunnels and the instant calming of the waters and the wind at his simple three word rebuke – ‘peace be still’, and I remembered the incredulity of the disciples - ‘what manner of man is this that even the winds and waves obey him’. I relaxed a little then and I smiled at the storm that raged around us and remembered his incredulity that his friends had such little faith. I too felt suitably rebuked. A couple of days later when speaking with the cabin manager I learnt that due to the sudden ferocity of winds on the Golan and Sea below all dwellings are built with full tie downs to

The sea's location below the mountains to the east makes it subject to sudden and violent storms as the wind comes over these mountains and drops suddenly onto the sea. This happens especially when an east wind brings cool air over the warmer blanket of air that covers the sea itself. The cold air, which is heavier, drops as the warm air rises. This sudden change can produce surprisingly furious storms in a short time, as it did in Jesus' day (Matt. 8:24). I thought what a remarkable experience for me and my wife on our first night in the Galilee; a great testimony of the veracity of Bible events recorded so long ago.

After retiring Marlene was offered a teaching position in Tennant Creek which she accepted. Des took the opportunity to establish a real estate business in the town. They are now happily settled in Yankalilla.

Our guest speaker was Ian Fowler who spoke about his early teaching experiences. The most challenging position was as the sole teacher at Windana Remand Home at Galandore. He was there from 1966 until 1971. This facility was for boys & girls from 2 to 18 years of age who had been classified as neglected or were awaiting a court appearance. They were held there for a maximum of three weeks.

As Ian had only taught in country schools up until then he was a bit naive. He had to adapt quickly in dealing with troubled street wise children.

He heard of many harrowing tales of neglect such as a young boy who was locked in a hot tin shed every day while his parents worked.

One time he asked the older boys if any of them had ever had a part time job to earn money. One boy said that he had a milk round and Ian was impressed. The other boys laughed and Ian found out that the boy did the milk round half an hour before the milkman delivered the milk.

Ian tried to be non-judgemental and felt sympathetic at the children’s circumstances. He did his best to educate them in the short time they were there.

Being in trouble with the law as a child is the most important predicator for adult prison time and for long term ill-health and unemployment.

Some children did come good. When Ian was principal at Bridgewater Primary school a well dressed bus driver identified himself as a former

Windana resident. It was a most interesting and informative talk.

There is no meeting in January so our next meeting in the New Year will be on Tuesday 3rd February at 10am at the RSL hall, Normanville.

hey’ve been waiting for the Royal bump’ – the tell tale sign another kid is on the way for William and Kate.

News of these royal arrivals impacts the world like visits from outer space. But, what makes them so special?

It’s all about privilege - where and to whom we’re born.

The fact is we could’ve been born anywhere, to anyone at any time. We could’ve been born in a palace or a slum - or even with debilitating disability or disease.

But, wherever, or whenever, human birth is one of the phenomenal miracles of the universe.

The functioning of tiny fingers and feet, the fragile digestive system, timing of heart beats, the sleeping and digestive functions along with everything else should leave us gasping in awe. Millions of new miracles are about to burst into existence! And, we’ve been one too!

Among the millions born each year many have potential for greatness. Some could be geniuses. Most, however, will never advance beyond poverty.

How will we clothe and feed, shelter and educate the new arrivals. Can we give them a decent go at life? How many can our already overcrowded planet accommodate?

The countdown will soon begin. We were in England when baby George was expected. Crowds gathered in London, newspapers were filled with speculation.

People were placing bets on the timing.

The excitement was electric.

about a very special baby. His birth, however, was nothing like Prince George’s. The contrasts may help us appreciate how special and unique was the birth of Jesus Christ.

Bethlehem was abuzz with people. Few knew what was about to occur.

An angelic messenger dropped in on some shepherds with this message ‘… behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be for all people. To you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign; You will find the babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.’

Christ was born in a most unlikely place – a cowshed – with some hay scratched around in a manger for his bed.

While in London we looked through Kensington palace – the place where Kate, Wills and George and the next one will live. Kings and queens have lived there before, including the great Queen Victoria. It’s huge – spacious rooms are everywhere – and no cowshed smells!!

Titles The new occupant of Kensington Palace is known as 'His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.’

Centuries before his arrival, the babe in the cow shed was designated ‘Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of peace.’

The angelic visitor proclaimed him ‘Christ the Lord’- a title of Deity!

Born to reign If events follow their usual course Prince George will one day be King George. His reign however, will be restricted to the British Commonwealth. And, like all kings and queens, can only reign while alive.

Of Jesus it was said, ‘Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever…,’ Born to save The all important question is: Why come to us in such a setting?

Christ’s mission statement is found in 1Timothy 1:15: ‘This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.’

Let’s connect that to John 3:16, 17 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.’

A Touch of Christmas Nostalgia It was the Christmas festive season in the mid 1940’s and petrol rationing was very much with us, so any thoughts of going very far in the Vauxhall 10 had to be seriously considered.

Also, food rationing although a little eased was evident with not many luxuries available.

However, my father had saved his petrol coupons, butter and sugar had been also been used very sparingly in readiness for an outing on that one day of the year when hardships, and all that went with war just finishing, the one day when everyone put all their cares away temporarily.

The car was in fine condition for a trip, dad having ensured that all was functioning satisfactorily, fuel tickets enough for our ‘big day’ to Victor Harbor and the boot loaded with a tarpaulin in case of rain, the food carefully packed having been

prepared and cooked a week ago.

I had hardly slept, excitement had taken over, this day of 25th December being of religious significance, it was also my birth date. There had been no presents for me as it was pointed out that the trip was considered my present instead.

We set off and the roads definitely not being of great condition as today’s roads are, onto South Road and then the faithful Vauxhall chugged its way up the Old Willunga Hill Road.

Our first stop was the Alma Pub in the town of Willunga, a beer for Dad and a lemonade and raspberry for me.

After this brief stop back to the main road on way to Victor, another stop for a cuppa at Uncle Albert’s farm at Mt Compass, and out came the trophies from his recent showing at the Royal Adelaide Show of his prize Rhode Island Red chooks and roosters.

I was sent outside to play by myself under the huge mulberry tree, something I was not actually enthused about, being terrified of the redback spiders supposedly residing there.

The next stop was our final one coming over the hill and, there before us was the blue sea, before the run to the beach shelters by the causeway.

The tarps were unnecessary, lunch was soon over, and Dad and I set off for Granite Island.

The horse tram was not running as the day being a public holiday we walked across and Dad had to tease me by ‘finding’ a three pence coin under the floorboards on the tram but, I knew he had put it there himself.

On the island in those days one could walk around to ‘Nature’s Eye’ – no prohibited signs, just an old wooden plank that we could walk on and watch the surging waters rush in and the foam receding showing an ‘eye’

Black Spot works underway between Wirrina Cove and Second Valley

lack Spot works have been underway at various locations between Wirrina Cove and Second Valley to improve road safety and reduce the risk of motor accidents.

The project includes 2.6 kilometres of shoulder sealing to allow vehicles to pull off the road in emergency situations, and provide a safe space for cyclists.

Local student on volunteer mission to Cambodia

ometimes just putting money in collectors tin does not seem to be enough. That’s why, local student Cassie Jelfs is heading off to Cambodia to spend her holidays helping in a rural village outside Siem Reap.

Cassie will be working in a small village building houses for the poorest families and classrooms for the local community. She will also be working at a sanctuary, feeding, walking and caring for the elephants rescued from performing tricks for tourists or simply abandoned, as work in the forestry industry has declined.

“I have always found working with people and animals very rewarding. I hope to make a positive difference for someone who needs it, while gaining more life experience and new skills.”

Each student who attends the program in Cambodia must raise their own sponsorship funds to cover the cost of the program. The funds they raise are

used to pay for local skilled labor to assist the students and villagers in building projects and to purchase building materials.

The students are involved in hands on work for two weeks. Along the way they will get a real taste of Cambodia, make new friends and experience a sense of purpose and achievement that will lift their spirits and stay with them long after they go home.

“It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the problems of the world and think that there is little we can do to change things, but these programs provide young people with practical ways in which they can have a really positive impact on village life while working hand in hand with the village community,” explained Reach Out Volunteers MD Tom Jowett.

Cassie is currently in her first year at Flinders University studying psychology. She hopes this experience

will help her reach her career goals as she will be gaining experience and developing new skills that will be transferrable to the workplace.

“It’s a great activity for students on their holiday break, they do something really worthwhile, they make new friends, and it can be a great addition to the job application after they have completed their studies.”

Hooded Plovers Listed as Vulnerable

or years Hooded Plovers have been declining, and now the plight of these small beach-loving birds has finally been recognised by the Australian Government.

BirdLife Australia has just been notified that the birds were officially listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act).

“BirdLife Australia has been working to recover populations of Hooded Plovers along the Australian coast since 2006,” said Dr Grainne Maguire, Coast and Marine Program Manager at BirdLife Australia, “and this recognition by the Australian Government is a great fillip to our work to help us protect these birds.”

“For the past three decades we have witnessed the increasing threats faced by Hooded Plovers from the pressures placed on their habitat by recreation on beaches,” Dr Maguire continued.

“For many people, a day at the beach, or a walk along the sand with the dog, is an enjoyable way to relax, but it often inadvertently results in the birds being impacted.”

BirdLife Australia’s dedicated Beach-nesting Birds project staff and volunteers have spent countless hours raising the public’s awareness and educating beachgoers about the plight of Hooded Plovers, as well as taking tangible action to protect breeding sites, giving the birds undisturbed space to raise their young.

“We coordinate a network of tireless volunteers who

patrol their local beaches to monitor and look after the welfare of these Vulnerable birds.

The results on beaches where we have implemented site protection have been spectacular, with some heavily impacted sites recording a tenfold increase in breeding success.

However there are many other beaches where there is still too much disturbance for the birds to breed successfully,” Dr Maguire added.

Breeding Hooded Plovers are not the swooping kind (unlike Masked Lapwings) and will run away from their nests when people or unleashed dogs get too close.

They do this to keep the nest camouflaged and to lead the threat away. Unfortunately this gives people little warning they might be about to step on a nest or to settle too close, which results in the eggs baking in the hot sun.

Similarly, the flightless chicks must spend hours in hiding when they are disturbed and they cannot access the water’s edge to feed.

The centre now has the 2015 Birds of the Fleurieu Calendar for sale featuring the Hooded Plovers. All proceeds from this calendar go towards the ongoing protection and research of endangered and vulnerable wildlife on the Fleurieu. This includes the continued protection of the White-bellied Sea-Eagle’s breeding territory and habitat restoration project.

Urban ecology is a mixture of introduced and native species, and the entirely new relationships that can and do develop between species in the urban environment.

The audience was engrossed with Chris’s presentation on why cities need nature. He talked about how nature creates a “Sense of Place”, which is a combination of characteristics that makes a place special and unique. It also describes a sense of belonging, attachment and ownership of particular places. The Southern Fleurieu is fortunate in having many features that make it unique, including the Leafy Sea Dragon, the Hooded Plover, the Rosenberg’s Goanna as well as being one of the best ‘feel good’ places in SA. Plants create a sense of space, so Chris’s message was to keep gardening whatever age you are, as it has numerous benefits.

Chris’s latest book, A guide to Urban Wildlife (250 creatures you meet on your street) is now available from the centre for loan.

There are many lovely Coprosma cultivars sold at garden centres, and they make very attractive garden plants. The one pictured here though, Coprosma repens, with its big, oval, glossy green leaves, is prohibited from sale. It is not one of the major “declared weeds” but it has naturalized in coastal areas of southern and south eastern Australia. There are several 2 metre tall specimens of this spreading shrub on the coastal reserve at Cape Jervis. Infestations often start under trees, from birds dropping seeds. There are

distinct male/female forms of the small flowers, normally occurring on separate plants. ongratulations to all our members out and about over the last couple of months. Our ODE and Encourage Show was a success with our youngest rider Mecki Roesler stealing the show in the games component. Since then she’s been to the Pt Elliott Show and looked absolutely adorable in her dressup.

We are pleased to say that Tamika and Mr Chips had a fantastic event and are now the Australian Intro Eventing Champions. She has also recently just been named as part of the ESA Be Active Youth Development Squad. Well done Tamika and Mr Chips.

We are also very proud of another of our young riders Caitlan Lloyd. Caitlan Lloyd was the youngest member of the PCASA National Games team making the journey to Perth to compete in the National Championships. Caitlan had a fantastic ride placing the SA games team 5th. Caitlan is a natural at all things Equestrian and has just recently tried her hand at polocross so we can’t wait to hear all about that and perhaps have some fun with this at upcoming rallies.

With the warmer weather upon us it is also that time of year when the club will be holding its annual summer camp from the 9th – 11th of January 2015. This camp is full of lots of fun including some brilliant lessons and a beach ride or two. The camp is open to all PCASA, ESA or temporary Yankalilla Equestrian Club Members.

We are even hoping to get together for some karaoke during the Saturday night Dinner which I’m sure will be a laugh.

Funding withdrawal reduces local Medical Services

F

unding provided by the Country Health SA (State Government Department) to Southern Fleurieu Family Practice used to finance the delivery of Emergency services and ‘On Call’ services is being terminated from 1st December 2014. Further information regarding the withdrawal of funding need to be directed to the Regional Director, Barossa Hills Fleurieu Rural Region by mail to PO Box 196, Gawler SA 5118 or by telephone (08) 8521 2020.

This funding loss means it is no longer viable for the Practice to provide the existing services and the following changes will occur from Monday 1st December 2014: ● ON CALL' SERVICES WILL CEASE. This means any person who requires medical attention after the surgery has closed will need to attend the nearest suitable medical facility.

All telephone calls after surgery closure will receive a recorded message advising them to call 000 in a life threatening emergency or for any other immediate attention to contact the GP hotline or attend the casualty facilities at either the South Coast District Hospital (Victor Harbor), Noarlunga Public Hospital or Flinders Medical Centre. ● A PATIENT GAP FEE WILL APPLY FOR ALL EMERGENCY SERVICES. A patient gap fee of $100 gap will apply to all Emergency Attendances made during surgery hours. This will need to be paid on the day and before attendance by the Doctor. This fee is essential to provide some contribution to the nursing costs and consumables involved in providing this service rather than withdrawing the service. Patients who do not wish to pay the gap fee will be referred to the nearest suitable casualty service.

Fortunately there will be NO CHANGE to the afterhours services provided and it is recommended patients utilise these services as necessary. These extended hours are 6.00pm - 8.00pm Monday to Friday, all day Saturday and Sunday between 9.00am – 4.00pm (subject to

patient bookings).

We also recommend all patients consider taking out ambulance cover in the event a transfer is required to a hospital at any time. This cover will save significant costs. Please contact the Practice if you require further information on where to purchase this cover.

The Doctors and staff of the Practice recognize and regret the difficulty this may present to our patients and thank you for your understanding of why this change occurred.

Practice comment regarding Service Changes

he Practice staff are disappointed Deb Martin, Regional Director, Country Health SA (CHASA) did not discuss the funding changes or the impact it would have on the Practice capability to service the emergency medical service needs of the community.

This was despite advice earlier in the year and more recently in October that consultation would proceed with all relevant medical practices and would include the Southern Fleurieu Family Practice. And it was also despite advice the funding withdrawal would cause major changes in services and w o u l d a d v e r s e l y i mp a c t t h e community. As we have not been involved in any discussions or consultation we can not comment on why the funding has been withdrawn.

In our view we provided a very good service to the community for a fraction of the cost incurred through other facilities While state government funding support was welcomed the Practice has long advocated to CHSA over a period of years the support needed to be increased to recognise the cost of providing emergency services to the region, particularly as there is no public hospital, and to provide a more attractive allowance for Doctors who remained on call for emergencies after the surgery has closed.

ello again readers, here we are again and its almost Christmas where did this year go. I have been hearing a lot from older victims with satellite out breaks. I have spoken to them about having surgery to stop it in its tracks, but they were reluctant. You can help some, but not all. I do my best with counselling them.

I need to correct a spelling error… the product I spoke about in the last update is 'coopex' it is safe to use and available at most hardware stores, it is an insect repellent that can be sprayed inside and out, environmentally friendly.

Ever heard of the cartwheel spider? It is very much like the Wolf spider of Australia but it is almost opaque and when threatened by a wasp or another spider it rolls itself up in ball and rolls down the sandy desert in Africa, until it

is far enough away from it's enemy then it buries itself in a new burrow to hide .I could not get a picture of it but will try for next update. My Museum friends were not available to speak to.

A newer victim from way out bush west from Maryborough Qld, was bitten in bed by a white tail spider on the back of her neck, she wrote me to say she fixed it up with metho. I am now sending her an information pack and advising her of the correct treatment for white tail bites.

Doctor Changes

s a teaching practice we will provide an opportunity for a GP to be placed on site and develop their skills as a rural GP. This means we can see GP’s come and go as part of their long term GP development program.

In February 2015 we will farewell Dr Shelly Gill who has been on placement since August 2014 undertaking a special program related to patients in aged care facilities in addition to traditional general practice.

Shelly will be leaving us for a placement in the Riverland and we hope she will return for a further period of training in 12 months.

In her place the Practice will welcome Dr Kavitha Sujeeve who will begin her first GP placement with the practice. Normally this will last 12 months. Kavitha is a very experienced GP and a profile about her will be placed in the next Yankalilla Regional News.

We will also welcome back Dr Kin Lau. Many patients will recall Dr Lau finished a 12month placement last August 2014. Dr Lau has completed his training, has completed his fellowship examinations with the Royal Australian Coll ege of Practitioners and has decided to return to the Practice.

Finally on a sadder note Dr O’Callaghan will leave the Practice to work closer to his home. We have advised Shan he is welcome back anytime.

Yankalilla and District Historical Society

he early settlers to this district - who began arriving in 1840 - set out to build a society that would sustain them and eventually provide them with the services found in any civilised society.

Some of these services took time to become established. Such as the provision of cemeteries.

The first cemetery not established until about 1854, many people were buried on private land. One of these was Robert Norman’s mother, Sarah, who, living with Septimane Herbert’s family, was buried in the property’s garden, her grave having a low brick wall and a slate, with her name, flat on its top.

By the time Sarah Norman was disinterred and reburied in a cemetery in 1885 there were two other graves in the old garden, one the wife of a man who had worked for the Herberts and the other a girl.

When Robert Norman died in 1883 he too was buried on his property, though by then there were cemeteries at Yankalilla. One of these was the Yankalilla Cemetery, which had been established in 1866.

Among other settlers who were buried on their properties are two members of the Kemmis family who are said to have been buried on Manna Farm in Yankalilla.

Some early settlers were buried in the Willunga cemetery. One notable burial, in 1850, was that of William Field who was second in command to Colonel Light on the “Rapid”. Field settled in the area and built his home, “Hillside” at Hay Flat.

By 1858 the Wesleyan cemetery, built in 1854 near Normanville (behind the RSL hall), had a number of graves but was considered unsuitable because of its proximity to the large creek which passed by several of the graves. The earliest burial in this cemetery was that of Elizabeth Leak, who died in 1856.

The Wesleyan cemetery at Harcourt had the same problem with the Yankalilla creek.

Another burial which took place in 1856 was that of John Mugfur who was 22 years old when he died.

His burial was the earliest recorded at the Dairy Flat cemetery. Others burials there are those of Rev. Charles Lee and his wife Caroline who arrived in South Australia in 1856 to take up an appointment with the Bible Christian cause in SA. Lee and his wife conducted a school, his wife dying in 1868, he dying three years later.

In 1858 the Bullaparinga Public Cemetery was established. Members of the Christie family who were early settlers in the district following their arrival in 1839 are buried there. Alexander Christie conveyed goods and passengers by boat to Kangaroo Island, and had the mail contract between the island and the mainland. He and his wife Ann raised twelve children, Christies Beach having been named after one of their sons. Another family with members buried in the Bullaparinga cemetery is that

of the Pooles. Thomas and Mary Poole had 10 or possibly 11 children many of whom died in infancy, their graves telling of a family’s heart-break.

St. Peter’s Catholic Church, built to the south of Normanville in 1858, had a cemetery which functions to this day, though the earliest grave marked with a legible date shows that burial to have taken place in 1885.

In 1873 Deacon Morse, the incumbent at Christ Church in Yankalilla, surveyed and dedicated Christ Church cemetery which is in the Glebe, on the opposite side of South Road from the church. The first burial was that of Sarah Hibbert, whose remains were transferred from the Government Cemetery a year after her death in 1872.

The oldest grave in the Myponga Uniting Church cemetery dates back to 1859. One notable burial is that of Thomas Hudson Beare who was second in command to Samuel Stephens, the first colonial manager of the South Australian Company. He arrived on the Duke of York, the first of the South Australian Company’s ships to drop anchor in Nepean Bay, on Kangaroo Island in 1836. Beare’s infant daughter was said to have been carried ashore by one of the sailors, and placed on the beach, thus becoming the first official immigrant to set foot in the colony of SA. Later, Thomas took up land at Myponga. He died on 6th November 1861. There is a memorial window to Beare in Christ Church Yankalilla, made by Edward Brooks, the first ecclesiastical glazier in South Australia, and Thomas’ nephew.

The Yankalilla Historical Society meets on the second Monday of the month at 8pm in the Council Chambers. Our next meeting will be on Monday, 9th February. On Wednesday mornings one of our members will be in attendance in the Yankalilla library between 10am and noon. Special guest, City of Onkaparinga Mayor, Lorraine Rosenberg unveiled the Dedication Plaque adjacent to the croquet courts.
