he Yankalilla Lions hand over dinner was held at Club Fleurieu on the 4th of July, 2016. It proved to be a most enjoyable and entertaining evening with sixty six members attending.

Amongst our welcomed guests were the Right Honourable Michael Pengelly, Mayor Glen Rowland and his wife Joy and the lions Past District Governor Ron Sargent. During the evening there were four new members inducted in to the Yankalilla Lions by the Past District Governor Ron Sargent. They were Brian Kain, Trish Wills, Sheila Livingston and Norbet De Rozario. We all wished them well and hoped that they would find enjoyment and companionship in serving others.

However, the main function of the gathering was to be part of the ‘hand over’ ceremony when President Graham

Buttery-the outgoing President handed over the ‘baton’ or should I say ‘bell and gavel’ to the incoming President Mike Fogden. Graham Buttery, who had been the Lions President for the previous two years, wished Michael and his new board members every success in the coming year. I cannot end this report without congratulating those who worked so hard behind the scenes, members of the Lions Club and the suppliers of the excellent food for the evening. The table arrangements, elegantly presented in silver and blue were only surpassed by the excellent three course meal. Sincere thanks were given to Bruce from the Courthouse and his band of merry men and women for all their efforts throughout the evening.

he meeting for July was held in the Uniting Church Sunday School room as alterations were being done in the hall. The ladies had a busy but quiet and rewarding day making birthday cards. There were a few who had never made a card so there was a lot of concentration. 9 members and 1 visitor were in attendance and we had 4 apologies. Once the cards were completed and displayed, lunch was on the agenda. One member kindly brought in a pot of delicious soup that everyone enjoyed, thanks Pat. Next on the agenda was our Annual General Meeting. All officers gave their reports of the previous year. Our visitor declared all positions vacant and conducted the election of officers after the retiring officers were thanked for their work during the previous year. Elected for 2016- 2017 were President – Davina Quirke (phone 0423008992), Secretary – Tracey Taylor (phone 85583852), Treasurer – Denise Walding, Craft – Connie Ward, Birthdays- Joyce Hall.

At the general meeting there were discussions on invites to our 80th birthday, add ideas for this year’s programme.

Create a legacy

Art from the Heart of the Fleurieu Coast

A

succession of festivals in our Yankalilla region from 2005 have left visual reminders of creativity. Have you seen the 2005 George Tetlow painting of the leafy sea dragon in the Yankalilla Council? Go to Normanville beach and admire the marine themed sculptures or linger for a while on the mosaic seat from 2007 festival outside the Visitor Information Centre. See the brightly tiled boat at Cape Jervis and drop into Delamere store to wonder at the 2013 festival wall. Play a tune on the piano in Foodland Mall and cross the road to walk along the wall of Bungala cafe-both legacies of Festival Fleurieu 2015.

Festivals leave lasting memories in the hearts of our community; each person who has attended an event, driven an artist trail, danced at a street party, sung a song, listened to a virtuoso or created words, food, artworks has contributed to the tapestry that is our biennial community festival.

riting tutor Dr Kathryn Pentecost is inviting contributions for the first 2016 published folio of local women’s creativity entitled Womenwrite. The project is envisaged as an ongoing series of publications designed to encourage and promote women’s literary and visual art endeavours. The Manager of Yankalilla & District Library, Sandra Skinner will tell us how we can use valuable resources of the library to research our family history. This will be a great introduction for those who are interested in doing research but don’t know where to start. Sandra will discuss the services and how they can be used and then will be happy to answer any questions.

Everybody is welcome and invited to stay for afternoon tea following the meeting. This will be a good opportunity to meet and talk to other people with similar interests.

nce a month on the 2nd Thursday we have a casual BBQ. It is very popular as it is very wellpriced ($5-00 for members $10-00 for non-members) and is a great way to have a good meal and meet new friends. These two experts in their fields have got together and designed a 4 Course “Tasting Lunch” with wine to compliment the food. 60/70’s Tribute Night

he Tribute Night was a great success and a credit to the hard work of all the organisers. Guests really enjoyed the “rock and roll” theme with the hall decked out in silver disco ball decorations.

Complimentary champagne (with umbrellas and cherries) was served on arrival and on the tables were traditional nibbles of hedgehogs (oranges decorated with cheese, onions, gherkins and pineapple on toothpicks) so reminiscent of that era. Garry Isaacs (Chunky Custard fame) entertained us with great music and we danced the night away. In keeping with the times hamburgers, hot dogs and hot chips were served for dinner with nut sundaes to finish. Some guests commented saying “Love the food. It’s been a long time since I’ve had hamburgers and chips!”

inety people, mostly children, booed and cheered, laughed and yelled out as Upstage Theatre brought another pantomime to life in the hall at Club Fleurieu.

The organisers from Books and Words Group thank you for your support.

Writing Workshop #4 at The Centre, Yankalilla

n Monday August 15, 11am – 1pm, Dr Kathryn Pentecost is conducting the fourth in a series of ongoing writing workshops for adults at The Centre, Yankalilla. Pentecost welcomes new and ongoing students to hone their craft with a series of exercises designed to create literary fluency and confidence – be it in the fiction or non-fiction field.

Pentecost believes that ‘writing is thinking’. ‘Too often people expect a particular moment of inspiration to strike’ she said. ‘This may simply be an endless delaying tactic that leads to ‘writers’ block’. ‘Writing is an active process’ she insists, ‘one where practice fuels both technical skill and creativity’.

Pentecost has been writing and publishing for over 20 years. She has written numerous essays, articles, press releases, plays for stage and radio, creative non-fiction, short stories and poetry.

She is the author of Peace & war: 9/11 stories, and has taught at SAIBT, UniSA and Flinders University. She has also taught memoir and songwriting in the Adelaide Hills.

eptember sees us welcoming New Zealand consultant curator and lecturer, Jane Vial to the Fleurieu and replaces Monica Bohm-Duchen.

As a specialist in Australasian art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jane will give us an insight into Tom Roberts’ sojourn in New Zealand.

Often referred to as the father of Australian landscape painting, we are excited by the prospect of hearing more.

When an outbreak of deadly bubonic plague hit Sydney in the summer of 1900, Tom Roberts escaped to Melbourne taking the long route via New Zealand. He painted and drew, met fellow impressionists, checked out work opportunities, was the life of the quarantine party in Wellington and made a pivotal Jane career decision at Vial Paradise at the top of Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu.

Jane’s lecture traces Roberts’ little known visit to NZ and

identifies some of the art he created across the ‘ditch’. Come along and learn more about one of our favourite artists.

Talks On Local South Australian Living Artists

A

s SALA month is now here in August, Yankalilla author Lorraine McLoughlin will be talking about living Fleurieu artists George Tetlow and Mark and Jill Pearse at various venues in Adelaide and its fringes.

McLoughlin’s recently published biography and art book about these artists, Lives in Art, has been well received in community and art circles. It will form the basis for the talks which she will supplement with many images of their work, as she has in the publication.

Heather Taylor-Johnson called it “an elegant book” when reviewing for InDaily, and praised the art work and its presentation: With more than 100 coloured prints and photographs of Tetlow’s and the Pearses’ drawings, paintings, pottery and sculpture stylishly laid out, it can take pride of place face on any discerning bookshelf.

Art critic, John Neylon, writing in the January issue of The Adelaide Review, said: Her books are splendid examples of the kind of contribution a person with a passion for the arts and literature can make to telling the local community’s stories beyond the usual filters of pioneering history and sport.

“While the artists are inextricably linked with the Yankalilla/Normanville area, they also have had an enormous influence in Adelaide and beyond,” said

We are always looking for opportunities to serve the community, our nation & the world. One of the major achievements of Rotary has been our End Polio Now campaign. When Rotary started raising money (over US$1.5bn has been raised) to eradicate polio in 1985, there were over

350,000 cases in 125 countries recorded annually. Last year there were only 74 cases of polio all of them in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Inoculations need to continue for a further three years before the world can be declared free of polio.

Do We Care?

id you hear that Earth has more than 7.3 billion humans aboard? Were you shocked? If not, why not? What would your reaction have been if the information had added that this is about four times Earth’s sustainable population? Absolutely shocked?

David Attenborough has been saying for years, “Humans are a plague on Earth”. During his working life of 60 years, 4½ billion people have been born - far too many, much too fast, severely upsetting the balance of nature. What are we, you and I, doing to save Earth? Do you, as I do, see the only solution being a strict policy of 2 children - maximum - per family worldwide, because this continues the family and the community but does NOT add to the FATAL, TICKING, TIME BOMB of over populations, which now threatens us. No excuses accepted. Shouldn’t basic education ensure all people know how NOT to become pregnant and also instill RESPONSIBILITY into us? Does this present surplus to requirements number of people cause problems? Yes, many. What about live animal exports? Do not animals suffer and die, because people want to eat them? Are they not changed from living, feeling beasts, to being just a commodity? Is this fair? Do we CARE? Did you know that Australia has two groups using high birth rates as a political tool? And we smile sweetly and allow it!

Why are we so selfish and careless? Wouldn’t it be a good and necessary idea for everyone to write a letter to our new Federal Member of Parliament and the PM etc telling them how we think and making demands.

Hand written letters are more effective.

Re: Dog Poo

Good Try But… eith Thompson, author of “Dog Poo” July edition simply missed the point.

The brand of clothes you wear and the exact breed of your dogs are irrelevant. The bottom line is the DCY has two signs erected (one of which is directly above a poo bag dispenser) which state – “dogs must be kept on a leach and physically restrained at all times within 100m South and 100m North of the jetty including the carpark and lawned reserve …”, and “please pick up after your dog.”

The message is, you have a responsibility to restrain your dogs on a leash in prescribed areas, and pick up after them, so rather than blame Council for 2 of the 3 dog bag dispensers being empty carry a disposable shopping bag with you so you don’t get caught out.

Maybe next time you won’t be observed by me but by a Council Inspector and hopefully “fines will be imposed for non-compliance” as also stated on the signs.

By the way I am also old enough to have been taught that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, and worse, failing to get it right is an embarrassment, so please abide by the laws and continue to enjoy our beautiful beach.

ear sir, This morning I took my dog for his usual walk, as always he did what dogs do and did a Doggy Doo's. Noticing there were no " Doggy Bags " on the facility which the council so kindly supply, (for owners who have forgotten to bring their own) I reached into my pocket for a doggy bag, which as any other dog owner with any sense would have done.

Keith, I feel you have not addressed the basic concern raised by a resident. You have given excuses and 'red herrings' but not faced up to your responsibility as a

dog owner. Also, sadly lacking in your letter is any hint of an apology.

ell Keith Thompson, fortunately, you are one of the few dog owners who obviously has no regard for other public facility users, and shows utter contempt to council regulations. The local council is not obliged to provide free poo bags, it does so as a gesture of goodwill. Considering there are no poo bags in the high street, then according to your logic, if your dog decides to relieve itself on the pavement around the shopping area, then you obviously think it is acceptable not to clear it up! Any respectful dog owner should always makes sure that they have a bag in their pocket before they leave home. Now that the local council know who you are, and by your letter, you have actually pleaded guilty to not clearing up after your pet, then you ought to be sent an infringement notice accordingly!!

ow , Keith Thompson what a hero you must feel after your feeble effort at denigrating & humiliating the 'Anonymous Normanville Resident ' for failing to correctly identify the breed of your dog recently . Not everybody is an expert at dog identification so your humiliation attempt of this person doesn't even get off the ground .You lost my informed interest after your first statement & I quote: Since when did a dog unleashed constitute being uncontrolled? unquote. Brave of you to ceremoniously expose the flaws in your thought pattern & process in a public letter . Any unleashed dog has the potential to be lethal and if it chooses to adopt an aggressive attitude then no amount of rebuke or calling by its owner will bring it to heel, unless its specifically trained to do so. The name tag on your shirt is pompous and hardly admissible as it's irrelevant. So the dog poo bag containers were empty. Would it be too daring of me to suggest that a dog owner perhaps supply their own bags, in case the public dispenser happened to be empty? Or is that a thought not entertained by a responsible dog owner as they may deem it to be a right to have the bags provided and not a privilege? Get your act together Mr Thompson, learn how to be a responsible dog owner, learn that an unleashed dog can be a potentially nasty incident in the making and I have not known many dog owners willing to risk their own safety to wade in and break up a dog fight.

I live in a residential park that is frequented by itinerant visitors throughout the year. There are signs throughout this park stating that dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. However, there is always a select few who ignore this condition and openly have their dogs untethered at their site. My small dog gets taken for a walk 3 times a day through the park grounds, on a lead. Whilst walking , she has been attacked 3 times in the last 12 months by visiting dogs not tethered. I have managed to pick her up each time before the offending dog(s) have got to her and have unceremoniously fended off the attacking dog in my own way. On 2 of the occasions the owners were nearby and did nothing.

One owner called his dog to heel but the dog ignored them and continued to jump up trying to get to my dog biting me in the process. Neither owner bothered to say sorry for the attacks and one of them even spoke a few words in anger at me when I told him his dog should be on a lead, his reply was, he can do what he likes with his dog. How does one counteract that banal mentality, why should the dog cop a thump when it's really the dog's owner that's the problem?

If you love and respect the beach facility so much then why not carry a couple of poo bags just in case the dispenser is empty? I know your bum points to the ground, do you accept the responsibility for that or is that someone else's fault too? Chill out Keith, life is way too short to encourage unwanted stress by ignorant rants toward people who call you out on a wrong doing of yours that you can't handle when caught out.

espite the wintery weather we had a good turn-out for our July meeting. Unfortunately former President Tim McCumiskey was unable to get there because of raging flood waters at his bush retreat.

Our oldest member Jack Nicolls turned 90 in June, the same age as the Queen. The club awarded him an official OAM certificate.

Other members with June birthdays included Barry Oats, Des Chilton & Bjorn Nilsson.

Our guest speaker was Hans van der Zalm. After migrating from Holland, Hans worked as a TV technician. He then joined the Dept of Civil Aviation as an aviation technician dealing with navigational aids & traffic control.

He went into considerable detail on aircraft movements & safety procedures. The most dangerous part of the flight is landing.

Air Traffic Controllers in Adelaide are responsible for a 50km radius from Adelaide airport. Beyond this their counterparts in Melbourne assume responsibility.

Brisbane control northern movements of all commercial aircraft.

GPS is the most common and most accurate navigation system in use today. It is based on precise satellite data which is relayed from the satellite to a ground station to the airplane’s GPS receiver. It is often incorporated with other systems like traffic collision avoidance systems, weather avoidance systems and terrain avoidance system. Pilots rely on it most in today’s busy airspace as it is more efficient and saves time and money.

It was reassuring to learn of all the safeguards in place to ensure our safety.

Hans later worked as a SAPOL technical expert and he explained and demonstrated how speed detection & breathalysers work.

It was a most interesting & sobering talk.

Just A Few Words by Rox Rosey

f there is a word that doesn’t appear to be used in the correct way and in the right context it is ‘just’.

For instance, when one goes to the barber or hairdresser, and the customer is asked how much to cut and the reply is ‘just a touch’, then it seems to me that ‘just’ is used too loosely without any thought of how lazy and acceptable our conversations appear to have deteriorated.

According to the dictionary. ‘just’ is definitely not a new word that has been concocted to boost a trendy, society.

To the contrary, ‘just’ is the basic word, as it performs many more functions, as being the first syllable of bigger, more important words such as justice, justify, justifier.

Very important words, those where there is no compunction or denial of their importance in our everyday language and conversations.

What this writer is trying to impart is that ‘just’ is used in such a habitual manner nowadays in our current everyday conversations that the original meaning has been lost somewhere in the jungle of daily happenings.

For instance, how many times has been heard in simple day to day talk the word ‘just’?

To quote how this word has intruded on our daily lives, may I suggest a few instances where it is an accepted word for conversations, such as requesting when someone is due to arrive or when they have departed, the answer is have ‘just’ this minute arrived, or have ‘just’ left.

Why not omit the ‘just’ altogether in all types of relating to time etc?

The word ‘just’ makes no difference at

all to the context of the conversation.

It appears to me that we have become lazy in our manner and have accepted some words that actually do not convey much at all.

These unnecessary words have become a habit and, as habits are concerned, they must be broken otherwise our everyday life becomes boring when we could so easily adopt a less lazy way of accepting our daily conversations and have a think about how boring some of our words are when we continue to use the same formats in our conversations.

A suggestion is that everyone may consider word power as a challenge to delve deeper into either improving their knowledge or making themselves create new ideas or setting themselves a target to improve their knowledge.

It is not a criticism of knowledge or intelligence but, (nearly said ‘just’ then) perhaps it will give a new slant on word replacement, not to change the meaning but, a new beginning of improving on everyday conversations.

Similar to deciding and challenging oneself to learn a new word, and get rid of some of the lazy choices that have been made.

After all, word power is to be admired, especially when one can nonchalantly drop in a new word in conversation, keeping in mind the context in which it is being used, and most importantly, know what the word means and how to spell it!

Try to give the word ‘just’ a miss!

Meanwhile, I will ‘just’ email this away and eagerly await my critics’ responses!

Inman Quilters Gifting To The Community

T

he ladies at Inman Quilters have been keeping busy as usual, quietly beavering away creating quilts to gift to the Community.

The group has gifted a number of quilts over the last few months: a raffle quilt to William Light School for fund-raising, another to help raise funds for Motor Neuron Disease and to the NT School of the Air to raise much needed funds, and together with ladies from quilting groups in the Adelaide Hills and Port Elliot, a total of 20+ quilts and 30 beanies were gifted to the Renal Unit in Alice Springs.

Closer to home we have recently provided 4 quilts to the Yankalilla Area School, 2 for the sick bay, 1 for the Special Education Room and one for the Counseling room. The school counselor noted that the blue in the quilt was a good color to encourage the kids to talk.

And Kelly Caire, Special Education Teacher commented that the quilt gifted to the Special Education unit, being all different colors and pictures, offered great jumping off points for learning exercises for the children.

And we have earmarked another 20 quilts to be gifted to under-privileged and foster children attending the school.

Additionally, we were pleased to be able to help a new family to the Yankalilla Area School with the gift of quilts to each family member, after the loss of all their possessions in a recent house fire.

For people experiencing difficulties in their lives, it is heart-warming to think that someone out there cared enough to take the time to create something that is very tactile and warming, something that hopefully, will make their day just a little brighter.

ankalilla Art wishes to thank Sue and Paul Elliot of the “Roman Villa” B/B for their kind hospitality when we visited them for our July art session. Their premises provided ample opportunity for each member of the group to experiment and be free to indulge themselves. The session was mainly based on looking at ‘perspective’. Architecture has been a prominent item in the news recently and interior decoration on people’s minds so the subject for the session was “Room scapes”, which, not only proved to be fascinating but also quite challenging. Our hosts kindly opened up all their rooms for us to use as subject matter which gave our artists a great variety of furniture and room shapes with which to tussle. To some members the call of the open air was more of a challenge and so they practiced their ‘perspective’ efforts on the wonderful landscape surrounding the property. To offset the possibility of bad weather and being obliged to remain indoors, Lilian kindly produced a collection of shells mounted on boards so that we could still look at ‘perspective’ and practice it but in ‘miniature’. The day proved to be interesting, warmly relaxing and very worthwhile with many members pleased with what they had learnt and achieved. Weather-wise the day was perfect except for the cold.

n 22nd of June our members gathered for an interesting morning. After initial club business and morning tea we divided into discussion groups to discuss a variety of topics which Betty Brockbank had organised based upon recent news articles both local and country wide.

The ideas emanating from these groups were recorded on large sheets of butchers paper and a member from each group reported the content of their

discussions. This proved to be a very interesting morning with many ideas shared, ranging from the modern education system, bullying in schools, teaching and reporting in schools, local tourism and the new funeral parlour.

There were some ideas which were echoed between groups and also some new ideas as to how improvements could be made. Naturally with the expertise of our members in many fields of life this became a stimulating exchange of ideas.

We were rewarded with a shared lunch of soup and crusty bread followed by some beautiful slices for desert. Thanks to Margaret White and Margaret Campbell for the beautiful soups and members of the committee for the sweets.

Our meeting on the 27th July included guest speaker Kimberley Hargreaves speaking about jewellery she has made.

Spider Bite Recovery Support Group ello again readers, winter came H early this year along with the lanina pattern which means we will have

a very wet winter and spring. When I hear people saying that they hate winter, I get really annoyed, down here especially because we need the water to drink and bath and also the farmers need it and it is part of the calendar. There will be some relief come spring. I believe it is the cold they are complaining about.

I recently heard from another victim in Victoria, who is having quite a bad time with a satellite out break, from a white tail bite many, many years ago. I feel for her and understand her pain very well. I wish her well.

The latest topic in the spider world is the book lung spider. I have consulted with my professors and they are telling me most spiders from the ancient world, the mygalomorphs group, have their lungs on the outsides of the carapace.

Can you imagine a book opening and shutting? That is what it looks like, only very very tiny. The latest ones were found in Tasmania in a cave. There are

many fat ones and skinny and different colours. I have asked several of my professors friends for a picture, I received one from Mike Gemmel at the Museum SA from a book by Bert Brunet. Also one from Wikipedia which points out the book lungs, courtesy Prof Ken Winkle.

I hope you have enjoyed this update a lot of people tell me they look forward to my write ups.

uskick has finished for the 2016 season. It has been a huge success with over 30 participants. The group played at 1/2 time in the A grade game against Myponga and everyone involved including the spectators thoroughly enjoyed it. At games end all players were presented with a medallion. The

season windup consistent of a final training run and concluded upstairs in the Clubroom where players and parents enjoyed wood fired pizza and curries for lunch. A massive thanks to Andy Cook and all the helpers and parents who were involved. unior Colts are enjoying a good year so far. They are currently sitting a clear 3rd on the premiership ladder and with all games ahead winnable, the lads will play Finals. Make sure you get about this group as we move towards the Finals as they are an exciting young Footy team and great to watch. enior Colts although they have struggled for numbers all year the lads have continually shown up to play.

The skill improvement is enormous from the start of the season, although they won’t play finals the Club has some very good footballers coming through into Senior Grades next year.

Hotel; with lots of great items up for auction, this will be a great day.

Yankalilla Men’s Shed

T

he Yankalilla And Districts Community Men’s Shed has been busy again this month. We’ve been fixing up machinery, lining the internal walls of the shed with insulation and timber cladding, and we’ve been finalising the WH&S requirements.

We’ve had more generous donations from the community including a jointer/ planer and timber from the Yankalilla museum, a fridge from the Victor Harbor Westpac bank and a huge amount of timber sheeting from Pepper Tree Kitchens. We couldn’t have got to where we are without the generous support of our local community. We truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We still need more machinery, hand tools, a welder, shipping container and anything else that may be of use.

We’re thinking about opening the shed another day of the week but we need feedback as to what day would be best.

Orchid Field Trip

ative orchids are a very important part of our environment and there are over 250 described species in South Australia. They are delicate and have a special role in ecosystems. Much like frogs can tell us if water is healthy, orchids can tell us if an area of native vegetation is healthy. Some are very rare and often rely on a single insect for their survival (as they need them for pollination to produce seed). Orchids come in all shapes and sizes with some looking like spiders and even donkeys.

Different species of native orchids flower all year round, but most of our local orchids flower during winter and spring so take a stroll around your local conservation park or native scrub patch and see if you can spot these spectacular plants on show.

The Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt. Lofty Ranges and the Native Orchid Society of South Australia have collaborated to create an identification chart of common native orchids of the Adelaide Hills. Y

ou often find these in colonies, flowering from July to October, so start watching for them now! Look for a rosette of leaves at the base. You will find 4-8 thickish leaves, all with smooth edges and short little stems. The leaves are oval in shape, up to 2cm long, greygreen and often flat on the ground. The lovely green and white striped flowers are on stems up to 10cm tall, but they themselves are only 1-1.5cm long. They are held erect on the stalk. Parts of the flower have great names. The green hood, for instance, is called the ‘galea’, and those long ears or wings sitting either side of the galea are called ‘lateral sepals’. And just in case you are wondering, the bump at the stem end of the flower is the ovary. These look absolutely delightful when you find them in the bush…just don’t tread or kneel on them when you go to take a photo!

Fungi

ith the recent long awaited rains has come an explosion of fungi around the area giving photographers an abundance of weird looking specimens to snap.

(These photos were taken at Inman Valley a couple of weeks ago.

WARNING – some Fungi is poisonous so always check before eating.)

Fungi are not plants. They have a few plant characteristics in that they ‘stay in one place’ and appear to grow like a very fast maturing plant, but they have little more in common. Not all fungi have ‘stems’ and none have roots, leaves, flowers or green photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll that is found in higher plants. Without chlorophyll, no fungus can manufacture its own food using photosynthesis and so all fungi

must obtain nutrients from bodies of other organisms. If the fungus attacks living plants, animals or even other fungi, it is called a parasite; if the tissues it feeds on are already dead, it is called a saprobe. Some fungal species use both methods; they first attack as a parasite, kill the host and then live as a saprobe on the dead tissues before infecting other living hosts. There are also large numbers of fungal species that go into partnerships with higher plants, and these are so important that many higher plants cannot exist without them.

Macrofungi and Microfungi

T

here are essentially two large, artificial, but very convenient groups of fungi; the macrofungi, which can be seen with the unaided eye, and the microfungi whose structures can only be seen properly with the microscope. The group we call the macrofungi are the ‘mushrooms and toadstools’, the bracket and coral fungi, or more simply and fungus whose finer structures we can see without a microscope. The microfungi contain enormous numbers of species (far more than macrofungi) and, equally, they play essential roles in the earth’s ecosystems.

Microfungi can be beneficial or harmful. For example, we do not like the destruction caused by a green mould when it rots the orange we want to eat, but we do value that same species of Penicillium when it is used to produce an antibiotic that helps us fight off disease. Microfungi are all around us; on our skin, our clothing, in the soil and on the plants and animals that we constantly encounter. Some species cause disease in plants and animals, but most have beneficial roles in the environment.

Plover Appreciation Day

his special day is aimed at raising awareness of the plight of groundnesting plovers around the world!

Many plover species are highly threatened, largely due to their habitats being some of the most popular for human recreation, e.g. the beach, shores of lakes and wetlands, or even open grasslands.

This habitat dependence, together with highly camouflaged nests and cryptic behaviours, means that humans can have major impacts on the survival of eggs and chicks, without even knowing it! The key to coexistence between people and plovers is awareness, understanding and sharing space with them.

Emma Stephen, NRM Coast Estuary and Marine Officer from Natural Resources AMLR will be talking about the highly successful Hooded Plover breeding season on the Fleurieu, the current banding program and other ‘Plovers’ on Thursday 15th September at the Surf Life Saving Club at 7.00pm.

n conjunction with Judith Sweetman the centre is planning to hold a ‘Beach Trash Creations’ Exhibition during the next Festival Fleurieu in 2017 and we are asking for expressions of interest.

The exhibition is open to anyone and entry is free. Art work must contain some trash collected from local beaches and/or estuaries. It can be 2D or 3D. 2D • no larger than 1.5m x 1m • Can be framed or unframed • Must be able to be hung ('D' rings with wire) • Any medium can be used.

ikuyu is well-known by many as a hardy grass for lawns. This hardy African perennial can withstand the backyard cricket matches, and survive just about any summer. It’ll also spread readily along roadsides or over vacant land with a two-pronged attack: using above-ground creeping stems (called ‘stolons’) and below-ground ones (called ‘rhizomes’). The stolons form a mat with short, folded leaf blades and many joints. Each leaf forms a sheaf around the stem before branching off; leaves can be slightly hairy, and get coarse as they age. Although essentially prostrate, put a barrier in its way, such as a fence or tree stump, and the kikuyu will climb all over and possibly through it! The stolons and rhizomes are extremely effective at spreading kikuyu (more so than its seed), one reason kikuyu has been labelled an environmental weed in S.A.

he Anglican church in Yankalilla continues to provide ways in which their church members can connect with the wider community as a whole. Each month in 2016, they have been offering a different style of worship monthly, to people who would like to re-connect with the church. These special services are more relaxed than traditional worship providing joyous singing,

laughter and a sense of being included.

Sunday 28th August will be no different.

The ‘Pet Theme’ offers those who have a real love of pets to bring them into church and then, during the service, brought forward to the communion rail for a blessing.

The service is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Bring along a friend and or your favourite pet (it can be a husband or a wife) to experience this joyous occasion.

Following the service a BBQ will be provided, and it is hoped people will stay on to enjoy a time together.

Book Of The Month The Fleurieu & Southern Coasts

southernmost part of the Mount Lofty Ranges extending from McLaren Vale to Cape Jervis which has become a popular tourist destination in South Australia.

Situated in close proximity to the capital of South Australia, Adelaide, and with fertile soils and reliable rainfall, it was one of the earliest areas to be settled in the state. The Fleurieu still retains a rural aspect, and this, combined with spectacular scenery, especially along the coastline, has resulted in it becoming increasingly tourist oriented and a location where many of the South Australian populace tend to retire to or have vacation residences.

The book should act as a ready reference for those exploring, residing or intending to reside in this beautiful region. Volunteers swamp wetlands planting day

A

fantastic effort by volunteers at this year’s Swamp Fest saw 3000 native seedlings recently planted at Stipiturus Conservation Park.

Natural Resources Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges Volunteer Support Officer Jodie Woof said the work of the volunteers on the day deserved high praise.

“Their efforts will go a long way towards restoring threatened plants and will contribute significantly to improving the health and resilience of our swamp systems,” she said.

“We had more than 100 volunteers turn up on the day. They not only planted seedlings but also installed mesh guards and put up temporary kangaroo exclosures.

“These structures are vital to reduce grazing pressure and give the young seedlings the best chance of survival.”

Having the Fleurieu Peninsula’s largest and most intact peat swamp, Stipiturus Conservation Park is of particular ecological interest.

The park is also home to the nationally endangered Mount Lofty Ranges southern emu-wren, as well as nearly 20 threatened flora and fauna species.

These include the endangered Mount Compass oak-bush, the endangered southern brown bandicoot and Osborn’s eyebright.

“I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered – the involvement of the community makes all the difference in protecting these important areas,” Ms Woof said.

orn in England in 1932, Pam trained as a lab technician and went on to work in cancer research, becoming a microscopist. Experienced in various technologies, she pursued laboratory work at universities in London and Cambridge. Emigrating at first to NZ, she later moved to South Australia upon

She and her mother Lyn lived for some time in Millswood with artist Barbara Robertson. When they all retired to live in Carrickalinga in 1985, Pam soon had to nurse her ailing mother. After time with local environment and reading groups, and being a member of Probus, Pam in later years was a carer for Barbara until she died in 2011.

Pam then had freedom to follow her own interests for a while and enjoyed reading, particularly about birds and nature. A fairly solitary person, she asked for nothing from others and was fiercely independent, saying little as poor health overtook her.

Pam was admitted to Ross Robertson Memorial Care Centre just after Easter 2016 and died there in early July. She would be surprised at the well of feeling and regret at her passing as she never wished for accolades.

What a shame because even though it’s winter and everyone is trying to hide indoors during this bleak weather there are still many people in our community that are relying on the support provided by wonderful volunteers to brighten up their lives. So if you have ever considered volunteering but were waiting for spring then please think again because we need you NOW. Southern Volunteering wants to hear from anyone who has a drivers licence and can spare some time once a month to help transport older people to various, social activities

coordinated by the Victor Harbor Caring Neighbourhood Program.

The days and times required vary a lot but drivers are needed for programs conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and weekends. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage and other approved out of pocket expenses. All you need to provide is your time.

Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre Childrens Centre Pilgrimage to Ingalalla Waterfalls

T

he Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre visited the Ingalalla Waterfalls in June for their annual picnic. The children in small groups explored the cottage ruins, the waterfall, the forest and embarked on a floral treasure hunt. The children enjoyed the unique environment observing, questioning and hypothesising the many natural and man made wonders that were in the offing.

Fortuitously for us there were no sightings of supposed bears or forest monsters that according the children inhabited the area but we were on guard! Visiting the Ingalalla Waterfalls enables the children to enjoy the benefits of outdoor play including developing healthy physical play habits, diverse cognitive and social skills and positive mental health benefits. We are

so grateful to have such a wonderful location in our district and the children and staff cannot wait to return for another exciting visit.

A Great Time At Playgroup!

Armed with rain jackets, gum boots and lots of excitement the children and parents from Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre (YCCC) playgroup met at Ingalalla falls for our end of term excursion. We crossed the swollen river and climbed over fallen logs to arrived at the roaring water fall. After a lot of rock climbing, running and waterfall gazing it was time to head back to our picnic spot for morning tea and story time. A great morning adventure was had by all.

To join the fun, crafts, nature play and story time, playgroup is held at the YCCC every Friday morning of the school term from 9.30-11am. Keeping Fit: Lateral Leg Raise

eing able to keep your balance helps maintain your confidence in preventing potential falls.

The Lateral Leg Raise requires the smaller and sometimes lazy muscles of the bottom and hip to contribute to a movement. This makes it a great exercise to maintain strength in the hips and feel more stable on your feet.

• With good posture stand by a chair or to the side of a kitchen bench.

• While maintaining level hips, raise one leg laterally (out to the side), leading with the heel, and the toe pointing forward.

• Only raise the leg as high as is naturally possible without twisting the hips or straining.

• Hold for 2 seconds then lower back down.

• Repeat with the same leg 10-15times, then repeat on the other leg.

• Exhale your breath as you lift your leg each time.

If you decrease your reliance on the chair/bench, there's an increased challenge for your balance.

his guidance they observed and documented his technique.

Mr Bowen did not want his technique taught until after his death, thus this did not happen until 1986 in Perth. Four years later it was being taught worldwide and was named Bowtech – The Bowen Technique.

Bowen Therapy involves a series of gentle soft tissue manipulations which balances or “tunes up” the body to allow it to heal itself. This occurs by stimulating energy flow, empowering the body’s own resources to heal it. It is safe to use on neonate, to the aged and produces lasting relief from pain and discomfort. The work consists of a series of precise moves on specific points of the body. The moves are light and can be done through clothing. There are frequent and important pauses between each series of moves giving the body time to benefit from each.

I have been using the technique since I studied it in 2000 and as a physiotherapist I am still delighted and amazed at the results that can be achieved so quickly. The process is not limited to the presenting physical symptoms but extends to the emotional, cognitive and spiritual aspects of the individual concerned. Bowtech is a series of moves that are believed to stimulate a body to solve its own problems. The intent of a Bowtech session is not to affect emotional releases but many report a lightening of spirits and subtle but pervasive refocussing of troublesome emotional patterns.

Bowtech can be used to treat a wide variety of problems from musculoskeletal ones to bladder imbalances and prolapses, restless legs, indigestion, jaw misalignment and baby colic to name a few. Sometimes exercises are given to also aid the problem eg for tennis elbow and shoulder problems.

Because I have been a physiotherapist for over 40 years I also continue to use my knowledge and those skills learnt over the years. I do not use both Bowen and physio at the same treatment session. Bowen cannot be used with any other therapy.

Year 12 Update

F

irst semester is over and the pressure is beginning to build for our year 12 students. The culmination of all their previous and current years’ studies sits here in this crucial final year of schooling. When not in lessons, these students can often be found, heads tilted towards laptops, or steadily taking notes for mid-year exams or finalising assignments. The word ‘moderation’ makes both them, and their teachers, extra alert!

Term Three sees many of our students planning their tertiary pathways; information packs and notifications of university open days are now arriving at school. Following this TAFE and university applications will open, which Senior Leader Rosie Watkins and relevant teachers will help guide students through.

Other students are exploring alternative post-school work options, including pursuing apprenticeships.

There are also practice exams in several subjects soon and most of the externally marked investigations are due at the SACE Board later in this term.

The tensions of these events are somewhat compounded by what often appear to be demanding SACE timeframes; there is no flexibility in these and time management for both students and staff is paramount. Students and senior years’ staff also need to factor in whole-school events so

We encourage all students to be mindful of their planning, allowing time to complete work efficiently and without putting themselves under undue pressure. We also encourage them to be mindful of their wellbeing – maybe reduce out-of-school working hours, getting good nights’ sleep and keeping an eye on healthy nutritious food. I know all of the year 12 parents will be supportive of these strategies too!

Andrew Gray has organised another wonderful sports marathon for senior years’ students before the students go on mid-term break; last year it was an excellent opportunity for students to enjoy a whole range of sports and unwind for a day after a busy time. They are looking forward to it this year too. Thank you Andrew!

One of the high points at the end of Term Three will be the Formal; a highly valued right-of-passage celebration … but a bit of a road to travel until they get there! What a privilege I have to be the home group teacher of this band of lively and capable young people and be able to keep a watchful eye on them as they take this final year of their schooling journey.

Mayor’s Short Story Competition

nspired by the Mayor’s recent visit to our R-6 Olympic Assembly, not to mention $1000.00 in prize money, many of our students are putting the polishing touches on their short story drafts. The Mayor talked to our students about ‘going for gold’ and putting in their best effort in his Short Story Competition, which closes at the end of term. Not everyone can win of course, just like at the Olympic Games where gold medals are hard to get. But at YAS we encourage effort and commitment to learning and hope to have a record number of entries from our students, mostly from children in the primary years.

Teachers have embraced the competition, always looking for opportunities to give our students a real purpose for writing. They have come up with various ways to stimulate creative story writing in their classrooms. In 3/4A and 4/5A the children were inspired by the trailer to

Basically, their aim was ‘to scare the Mayor!’ In 3/4B the class novel the 27th Annual African Hippopotamus Race was used as a springboard into story writing. Children were encouraged to be ‘real authors’ who plan, write and edit their work.

Winning isn’t everything we know but it would be lovely to have the winning entry at YAS, that way we could walk away with the gold! Now that would be nice!

We would like to thank the Mayor and the local council for coming up with such a great competition for school children. Good luck to everyone who has entered.

The “Gifting Quilts” are made by the group and “Gifted” to the Community. Ms Robby, Bu Kelly and Sharyn Braithwaite were the lucky recipients and they will use the quilts in their rooms for the students.

Yesterday yet another act of kindness from the group when a new family to the school received an individual quilt each. Sarah and her family recently lost all their possessions in a house fire. Thank you for your kindness.
