e were welcomed by our new President Betty Brockbank.

Lyn Trigg introduced Miriam Laister our guest speaker for today. Miriam is well qualified to talk about Astrology, having studied and attained the Federation of Australian Astrologers Diploma. She has also had several articles published and runs seminars for interested groups.

Miriam told us how in 1982 she attended a workshop which started her passion for astrology. Prior to that she had been a sceptic, but after studying the topic in depth she is convinced that the movement of the stars and the planets has a direct link with human behaviour. Knowledge of astrology can help direct our lives by highlighting choices and decision making. It has been important to man for many hundreds of years, influencing people from different cultures in relation to daily life, such as the right time for planting crops to achieve a fruitful harvest. It has been used by nomadic tribes for hunting and planting in Babylon, India and Egypt and other countries around the world.

Astrology helps us understand and interpret the link between the outer universe and the inner self. A greater understanding of astrology can help you recognise your inner strengths,

talents and also weaknesses. It can help you make decisions in life, improve family relationships, sometimes assist in making important decisions which can change your life’s direction. The planets have been given names which echo around the world, for example Mars is known as the red planet and God of War. The importance of the night sky and position of the stars and planets has been recorded since the middle ages. By the end of the 18th Century spiritual beliefs which were linked to religion and Church divided the people, and yet there are references in the Bible to the night sky.

Carl Jung used astrology extensively to justify why man does certain things. Our character is laid down by the charts linking our date and time of birth to elements in the universe.

Man reacts to situations in different ways which rely on strength of character as well as individual and talents but man also has free will to make choices in life. The astrologer can provide a means of solving problems and making choices.

Sometimes the course of a life can be changed by wise problem solving.

Miriam showed us an example of a chart which we found fascinating and made us want to find out more. For the beginner, astrology seems quite

complex but Miriam’s talk certainly aroused interest. The star signs that many of us are sceptical about have more relevance than we thought in relation to our character, strength and talents. Knowledge of the path and position of the planets can help us in doing certain things at the right time, such as the ancient tribes with their planting and hunting. art of the Yankalilla District Community Cultural Arts Network Inc., the YAM features all kinds of acoustic* music; folk, blues, roots, country, etc by local and imported musicians. All welcome.

YAM is held from7pm ‘til late on the 3rd Saturday of the month, from March to November. Remaining sessions for 2015 are on 15 August, 19 September, 17 October and 21 November.

YAM is held at the Yankalilla Show Grounds, between Yankalilla and Normanville on Main South Road with performances on the Supper Room stage and jamming around the campfire.

133rd Yankalilla Show

N

ot long now until the 133rd Yankalilla Show which will be on the Saturday 3rd October. 133 years is something to be pretty proud of. It is a huge community event with lots to see and do for all ages. It is great to have a centrally located showground between the townships of Yankalilla and Normanville and over those 133 years those towns have certainly gotten closer. We are also one of the few showgrounds owned by the actual Show Society which means that the wonderful support we get from the community is vital to the existence of the Show.

Hope that this support continues as the committee is working hard to bring another great Show together.

We have Xtreme Trials Freestyle motorcycle rider Adrian Harry performing at this year’s Show as just one of the many entertainment acts.

The centre arena will feature Horses in Action with 3 rings including the introduction of an Encourage ring for young riders, all enquiries for the Horse section please contact Wendy Hunt wendyannhunt@gmail.com.

The direction it takes is largely driven by the input from the community from the types of adverts to the club reports and opinions in the ‘letters’ section. As the chief puzzle solver/editor, I try to keep it all under control but actually, I think it really controls me....

The next big event in the area is the Wirrina Bluegrass Festival in early September. There is an update on page 7. For everything else, which always includes a broad range of subjects, activities and opinions, read on!

SALA Exhibition for Yankalilla

ankalilla Hotel and Yankalilla Regional News are proud to sponsor the 2015 Sala Festival Local Artists. The Multi Mixers are made up of 5 local artists, some well known and some newbies, Betty Gubbin, Andrew Munn, Kevin Golding, Jayne Warnock and Paul Motiekaitis.

The exhibition titled Country to Coast is a mix of traditional and modern art including photography on canvas with the emphasis on Country to Coastal scenery and wildlife.

The exhibition is on show at the Yankalilla Hotel from the 1st to the 31st August. A catalogue of all artwork will be available free from the Yankalilla Hotel from the 1st August. All of the artwork on show will also be available for purchasing from the Yankalilla Hotel. Please come along and support

What’s For Breakfast?

ecret Men’s business is shared in sheds across the Yankalilla District on the first Saturday of each month. The Yankalilla Men’s Shed Breakfast offers men an opportunity to talk about issues affecting them and meet other blokes.

Group members take it in turn to host the breakfast in their garage or shed and up to 30 men attend each time.

Thames, but how many of us know the architectural history and development of the City of London?

This intriguing lecture will look at the changes to the famous City of London skyline viewed from across the River Thames. Anthea Streeter w ill cover t he architectu ral development from Roman port city through the Great Fire in the mid 17th century that changed the timber medieval city to a brick built city dominated by Sir Christopher Wren’s classical St Paul’s Cathedral, and discuss the changes brought about at the turn of the 20th century; the wartime damage and how finally the new generation of 21st century tall buildings such as ‘Gerkin’, ‘Shard of Glass’ and the ‘Cheesegrater’ are set to change the skyline even further.

Grist To The Mill

ypically June and July are the quietest months of the year for hospitality businesses in our region, as you will notice from the deals on offer by restaurants and hotels in the area. Leonards Mill decided to invest in their business and property by undertaking a major refurbishment of their bar area.

“It was time to look at the bar space and create a welcoming, cosy area for our new range of bar snacks”, said Jane. It was this thought that led to

the mezzanine being turned into “The Loft”, an intimate lounge area for people wanting to meet with friends and share a glass of wine and conversation.

“This was also a great opportunity to give our staff a well-deserved break so they could spend time with family and friends”, said Alan, co-owner.

Alan and Jane were actively involved in the project and enjoyed working alongside some great local tradespeople such as Fleurieu Wall and Floor Tiling, Wilson Refrigeration, Shannon Baldock Electrical and his brother Ian, (Yankalilla Landscaping), who helped craft the new light which takes pride of place over the bar. The history of Leonards Mill has been further enriched by a piece of timber sourced for the light fitting from the original Rapid Bay Jetty.

Steve Grigoul from Axis Sculptures, who exhibits pieces on the lawns at Leonards Mill, is also a cabinet maker and sourced recycled jarrah from the Adelaide Hills to create the bar and cabinetry.

Entries Open for 2015 Adelaide-Based National $25,000 Kennedy Art Prize

E

ntries have opened for this year’s $25,000 Kennedy Art Prize – an Adelaide-based national art award that is one of the richest in Australian art circles.

More than 370 entries were received for the inaugural Prize last year, won from 21 selected finalists by Killara, New South Wales full time portrait artist, Ms Sally Ryan with a work titled 'Narcissus 2.0 - after Caravaggio'.

Offered by the Kennedy Arts Foundation, entries are open to all Australian artists across all forms of visual media but must be works that embody, comment on or celebrate “beauty”.

Emerging artists especially are encouraged to apply with the Prize’s varied award structure designed to showcase previously un-exhibited artists alongside established Australian luminaries.

Categories include painting, mixed media, multimedia, video, installation, 3D, pencil, photography, sculpture and other.

Sealand Theatre Company and Songs of the Sea

tarting a theatre venture is no mean feat… You need to have broad shoulders and a happy heart… a touch of madness and a huge dose of selfbelief… as well as the support of friends and the community at large. This is exactly what Dr Kathryn Pentecost is doing here in Second Valley.

Inspired by the success of the event she produced at the recent Festival Fleurieu, entitled My Passionate Philosophy, and her involvement as team leader of the Affirmative (and winning) team of The Great Debate at the Yankalilla Hotel, Pentecost is seeking passionate thespians to join her in creating a new theatre troupe, which she hopes will eventually tour the regions.

Pentecost, who has recently completed her doctorate at the University of South Australia is returning to her theatrical roots. In NSW, she was a founding member of two successful theatre troupes that produced the works of Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Patrick White, Edward Albee and others.

She has also worked as a stage designer, writer, actor and radio producer, in addition to writing about the arts for a range of media, including Artshub.com where she was the very first Adelaide correspondent. She has worked in advertising and

Ms Ryan today said the Prize was a great encouragement to the national arts community as it brought both prestige and substantial financial opportunity for the winner to progress their talents.

“My prize money assisted me to further develop my Sydney art studio and as a frequent exhibitor, it also attracted additional attention to my portrait works – so there are many benefits in entering,” Ms Ryan said.

The Adelaide-based exhibition of the 20 finalists for 2015 will run from 20-28 November at the National Pharmacies Training Centre, Grange Rd, Kidman Park with national tour dates for the winning work to be confirmed later in the year.

The Foundation’s Choice, an exhibition comprising the Foundation members’ shortlisted selection, will run alongside the main exhibit, showcasing the Prize’s highest ranked works.

Pentecost sees a need for a theatre troupe in the area. Whilst she applauds the sports opportunities available for young people, she laments the fact that very few young people are actively involved on a regular basis here in the arts – as there are few opportunities. In addition, she believes that having a theatre troupe in the area, has many benefits both to locals and tourists alike. She is also in negotiations with others to start drama classes for young people.

Pentecost does not believe in waiting for government handouts. Instead, she and her husband, the sculptor Geoff Bromilow, are staking their own funds to start the theatre but they are also seeking ongoing sponsors. Pentecost is currently writing the first show Songs of the Sea - a lyrical play with music set in Second Valley in the past, present and in the imagination of the characters.

Sealand Theatre Company aims to establish itself as an innovative troupe which will entertain and educate its audiences. Submissions are already flowing in from actors, singers, set painters, sounddesigners, etc, but the theatre is seeking more interested folk to fulfil the various roles both on and off-stage, including lighting crew and front-ofhouse people. She also hopes to attract those who just want to be on the mailing list as audience members for productions.

A community meeting and fundraiser is taking place on Saturday 1 August, 6-8pm at Second Valley’s Soldiers’ Memorial Institute – organised

The meeting will include entertainment and the silent auction of various art works, including a seathemed sculpture by Geoff Bromilow. We invite everyone to come along. $10 adult entry fee translates as a year’s membership of the theatre.

am sorry that people of Endeavour Funerals hold the opinions of two letter writers from the July edition in such contempt.

It is my opinion as a long standing rate payer that we are allowed to have a say in the way our much loved district is developed.

In this case a letter stating many concerns about this development was signed by 34 people that live in the area behind it. This was not even tabled at the development meeting.

I am sure the letter writers don’t want to enter a bun fight with you but please give them some respect for their concerns.

n Sunday 12th July at a shopping centre in Victor Harbor, I was privileged to have a lengthy conversation with a prominent gentleman within the City of Victor Harbor council.

One of the topics discussed was the Yankalilla township centre’s planned funeral parlour.

A suggestion by the gentleman was to have a crematorium in Yankalilla to serve Goolwa, Victor Harbor and other parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

This idea made me think about the benefits of a project like this to the community, which are many.

Perhaps Yankalilla Council could put this idea to Geoff Nairn, architect and designer of Centennial Park Cemetery who has been engaged to assist Yankalilla Council to transform the Yankalilla District Cemetery.

when I heard a commotion coming from the back of Jill’s property – I can only guess who was responsible! I knew Sabre hadn’t fully recovered from the injury last year – caused by a dog named “Jep” as he had a slight limp, but he seemed happy enough when he greeted us at the gate. I’m so very sorry Jill that he is once again confined, we will miss his gentle nature and pray that he recovers very soon.

WHOA Australia’s Most Outrageous Political Stunt

W

ith regard to my critics in the July edition I would just state that hate mail from Christians is not very becoming. Also if any reader is scared that an opinion is about to be forced upon them then stop reading now.

The schools chaplaincy program was the brainchild of a volunteer school religious instruction teacher who wanted to put evangelical Christians into schools. The idea was taken up by Prime Minister John Howard in order to win the support of the powerful Australian Christian Lobby (ACL). In other words to get the Christian vote.

The program started in Victoria where it was greeted with massive negative comment from the media, political commentators, teachers’ unions and others. The head of the Victorian Education Union, Mary Bluett described the program as sickening.

Every successive Prime Minister since has willingly jumped into bed with the Australian Christian Lobby because of

its massive vote winning potential.

Even the atheist Julia Gillard looked like she was gagging as she publicly swore her allegiance to the program whilst being interviewed by the managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby. Over $500,000,000 has now been wasted on this unprecedented, absurd political stunt.

It is absurd and unprecedented because nobody seems to be able to justify it. It is popular because of its counselor element but nobody can explain why it has to be Christian.

Howard came up with the breath taking statement that “students need the guidance of chaplains.” I am not sure just how bad our kids are but by Howard’s standards Australian parents and teacher must be total basket cases when it comes to raising and teaching children. Our kids need chaplains like they need genital mutilation.

Chaplains have also been given the task of teaching our kids VALUES. Once again an insult to parents, teachers, the non religious and people of every other religion except Christianity. Like it or not our politicians have decided that only evangelical Christian values are good enough for our kids.

If you don't like discrimination and therefore are for same sex marriage and acknowledging aboriginals in the constitution then I believe you should be against the schools chaplaincy program.

The receptionist at the Council said it could have been erected because it is private property, I do not think so. Whatever the reason I do not consider it a very good one.

New funding for community projects to reduce violence against women

T

he Australian Government is inviting not-forprofit organisations, local community groups and local governments to apply for grants to help deliver projects that will reduce violence against women.

Applicants can apply for up to $150,000 over two financial years through the Government’s Building Safe Communities for Women and their Children initiative, to fund one-off projects that address domestic violence in our local communities.

Total funding of up to $4 million is available from 1 October 2015 to 30 September 2017.

This funding will help our local organisations come together to respond to and support women and their children who are experiencing violence.

Everyone, whether as individuals, through

organisations or the community as a whole, has a responsibility to recognise violence against women and its impact, and be prepared to act.

Organisations such as community groups, sporting bodies, youth organisations, schools and faith groups can all play an important role in improving safety for women and their children.

The Australian Government understands that domestic violence affects different women in different ways and, as such, innovative and original solutions must be sourced from communities across the country.

Grants can be used to develop a range of practical solutions for dealing with issues of domestic violence in their community. Projects could focus on local engagement to raise awareness about the

Green Army has River Murray focus

T

he Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island communities are the latest to benefit from the Australian Government’s Green Army programme, with the Hindmarsh Island Landcare Group Inc successful in securing two projects in Round 3 of the Government’s major environmental initiative.

The projects will focus on continuing the Hindmarsh Island Landcare Group’s Murray Mouth Estuary Project, and will take place at the mouth of the iconic River Murray.

Green Army participants will be tasked with revegetating corridors, undertaking weeding management, removing debris and propagating seeds; with the desired aim of improving the local habitat and the health of the Murray estuary.

The Murray Mouth Estuary Project is an excellent example of a community driven environmental restoration project and I congratulate the Hindmarsh Island Landcare Group on its efforts to bring community members together to deliver this important project.

Young people in the Mayo electorate who are interested in being a part of one of the Government's major environmental initiatives and in helping our community deliver important local conservation outcomes now have the opportunity to join the Green Army.

Calves Shine Light On Dairy Careers

O

ver 600 excited students and teachers from thirty three schools in South Australia were awarded for completing Cows Create Careers – Farm Module, in four presentation days in late June.

The presentation days recognised the thirty three schools from across the Limestone Coast, Barossa Mid North, Murray Bridge and the Fleurieu Peninsula, that had participated in the program. Prizes were awarded to the winning senior and junior schools and to student teams.

Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a National Centre for Dairy Education program funded by Dairy Australia and industry sponsors. The Cows Create Careers program aims to increase student awareness of Dairy Industry careers in a very hands on way.

Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-weekold calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7 and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost.

Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module.

Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program Manager, Tracy Lloyd, said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to over 210 schools across Australia with 9,456 students completing the program in 2014.

“Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms Lloyd.

“By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.”

The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and

advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave 1,704 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions.

Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives statewide support from SADA Fresh, Rural Bank & La Casa Del Formaggio. Yankalilla Historical Society

ankalilla Cemetery, like many other old cemeteries, has a number of unmarked graves, many of which belong to babies and children. And it is possible that some of the unmarked graves could belong to adults, economic factors having an effect on any one of these burials. The Historical Society conducted a walk through this cemetery earlier this month however it had to be abandoned mid-way because of persistent rain. This walk will be rescheduled.

The first burial in this cemetery was that of Mary Lowe. Mary died on the tenth of February, 1858. A resident of Inman Valley, she died at Bungala Valley. These scanty facts are all that we know of Mary Lowe.

Other burials include those of the Putland family.

In 1840 John and Sarah Putland arrived in South Australia with five of their children, another son joining them soon after their arrival. In the mid 1850s they moved to Yankalilla and lived near the township but soon moved to the property of their son Henry at Cockatoo Hill. The entire family were engaged in farming in the Yankalilla district.

John junior (1825-1909) owned Bethel Farm, but sold it to John Duffy in 1875 and acquired land at

Hay Flat where he build “Rose Cottage”. Putland’s Hill is named after him. A son of John jnr, George, married Harriet Fowler, daughter of John Fowler, who was a boot maker.

In 1848 James Smith, another early settler to this district, arrived from Scotland with his wife Agnes on the “Baboo” and settled at Wattle Flat. The following year James and Agnes walked to Yankalilla where James was employed as a shepherd’s supplier on Heathcote’s Station. Agnes took on the duties of post mistress at Boord’s Flat, (now Wattle Flat). When Agnes’s sister, Margaret, and her family came out from Scotland in about 1850 it is reported that James and Agnes walked to Port Adelaide to meet them - about six weeks before Agnes’s first child was born.

In 1852 James rode on horseback to the Victorian goldfields where he did well. He sent his earnings back to Agnes, who purchased 512 acres of land.

James and Agnes subsequently built their home, “Brookside”, which was a substantial residence for those times. James was a Justice of the Peace and a Councillor, and was Chairman for two periods. He and Agnes had nine children. The first child died when seven days old and was buried under a gum

tree near the post office at Boord’s Flat (Wattle Flat).

In 1872 James took up land on Yorke Peninsula, a ketch needing to be hired to transport their goods across the gulf. His four sons began pioneering in Yorke Valley. A daughter, Jessie, married William Hamilton Sampson in the Bible Christian Church at Yankalilla in 1880, the first wedding to be held in that church.

Agnes died in 1889 at her beloved “Brookside”, aged sixty-five. Some years later James married Caroline, widow of William Caudle. James died in 1905 at the age of eighty.

ow that we are in our winter recess the next meeting of the Historical Society will not be held until 14th September, when we will meet in the Yankalilla Council chambers. On Wednesday mornings one of our members will be in attendance at the Yankalilla Library between 10am and noon. Rabbits and Magpies by Rox Rosey

he above looks a tad unusual but all will be revealed!

Some years ago I wrote of resident magpies that were residing in the gum trees on the block next door, there were two families, each in its own tree and the family consisting of Mum, Dad and usually either one or two nestlings.

The parents were very caring and Dad would be the food gatherer for his family, as the chicks

became independent then we would see the families venturing further away from their tree havens.

However, they would continue to visit the front lawn and do their warble which would let me know they wanted some tit-bits of some kind. If I was a bit late in attending to their warbling, then the beak tapping would start on the security door to ensure I would come to them.

Since their chicks have been foraging on their own not far from their parents, it has been a pleasant sight to have them congregate on the lawn looking for bugs and whatever they can find.

There now has appeared another ‘free-loader’ in the shape of a pesky rodent that is considered the national symbol for Easter, the rabbit! We had noticed holes dug in the front lawn, and not small ones either!

At first we thought it was someone’s pet that had escaped but, were soon to be visibly corrected by the sight of rabbits gnawing on our front lawn with delicious green shoots rapidly poking through from the frequent and welcoming rain.

As well, it appears that the rabbits are not confined to our particular feasting table but, neighbours have remarked on the presence of these cheeky little rascals, they do not differentiate between our or other lawns to gorge themselves on.

In the morning we see evidence of the rabbits’ dining and later the maggies come and forage for the grubs or seeds that have been unearthed as their chosen delicacy, our maggies are back, the newcomers – the rabbits are getting their stomachs filled as well.

One night turning into our driveway, there were the miscreants. Two adult rabbits and two young ones having a wonderful gnawing time.

Apparently, the rabbits are a common sight all over the town, the church gardens and lawns have been very popular (perhaps blessed?) and the rabbits don’t seem very perturbed at being seen by humans and just carry on gorging. However noone has suggested trapping them or getting rid of them, perhaps they will just disappear when the summer months come around, not so many green lawns and grasses for them.

I won’t miss them I must admit as the lawns will

appreciate a rest from consistent gnawing, I would miss my maggie families though as they have been visiting for many years now, and we have a healthy respect for each other. I will wait and there will be the usual tap tapping at the front security door each morning – this being my wake-up call, a wonderful sound, and one feels very privileged and humble sometimes for such simple pleasures.

For the Love of Croquet

t’s a far cry from the sprawling waters of St Vincent’s Gulf and the backdrop of the Flinders Ranges, but when Dean Paterson looks out southwards from the two lawns of the Aldinga Bay Croquet Club to the green drenched rolling hills stretching down to Sellicks Beach, he must wonder why his passion for the sport has brought him in circles from the courts of Port Pirie’s Mary Ellie St. Bowling Club 15 years ago.

A former Australian singles croquet champion, it was in 2000 that Dean retired as the then greenkeeper for the well-known Port Pirie bowling institution.

His plan was to retire to Aldinga with wife Nancy, build their new home there and continue their love of croquet through a membership at the Victor Harbor Croquet Club.

While preparing to relocate, news came through via Croquet SA that the Aldinga Bowling Club was enquiring about the possibility of croquet players making use of their second bowling green because, with dwindling bowls membership and a lack of funds, the bowls club could no longer look after the extra green on Port Road.

The ever entrepreneurial Dean, a then member of the SA Interstate Croquet Team since 1990 and having won the Australian Open Singles in ’95, saw the potential – as well as not having to travel to Victor Harbor – and initiated the negotiations which subsequently led to the establishment of a “brand new croquet club in the South”.

He wasn’t alone in his pursuits – with then Aldinga Bowling Club President Ron Stuart, backing the fledging new sports club with help applying for a grant to buy equipment and advertise for croquet players.

Dean – who has just celebrated his 80th birthday along with wife, Nancy – recalls the opening day of 28th October, ending with nine players joining up immediately.

For Dean, it was a period he served as both Club President and Coach – and unearthed the fact there had been a Croquet Club in Old Aldinga (all women) formed in 1932 which later folded.

A year after the opening, membership had climbed to 15 with Dean continuing to play in the State team until 2005 followed by two years as the non-playing State captain/coach.

For many years after that he served on various Croquet SA committees and was Vice President of the main body of the Aldinga Bay Bowling and Croquet Club for 2 years while Nancy was the Treasurer of the same for three years.

Having brought the sport back to Aldinga, the community continued to benefit with the Club involved with State Schools Championships in Aussie Croquet and at Primary and Secondary school playoffs held at the sport’s State headquarters in Hutt St, city.

Coaching was undertaken for hundreds of students at Yankalilla, Southern Vales, Aldinga, Willunga, Seaford, Wirreanda, Tatachilla and Woodcroft College campuses.

Over 50’s Celebrate!

ollowing on from the very successful 50th Birthday celebration lunch in June the lunch for July took the theme of “Christmas in July” which has become a favourite tradition with Australians over recent years. To appreciate the traditional Christmas fare of turkey and Christmas plum pudding in the cold weather as they do in the Northern Hemisphere is very enjoyable.

The Festive Season was created with a beautifully decorated hall, Christmas tree, balloons, traditional bon-bons and a truly delicious 3 Course meal. The turkey was succulent and the ham and vegetables delicious.

Ricky O serenaded with old favourites “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, “Unchained Melody” and “Diana” and then did the very popular Elvis impersonations.

People took to the floor and danced to the songs to very enthusiastic

applause.

The Committee is pleased to see the numbers to these lunches swell as word spreads of what fun they are and what a great way to spend a day enjoying good food and friendship and socializing with others in a great atmosphere.

avid Paton AM is an ecologist at the University of Adelaide with a passion for conservation and restoration and a strong commitment to long-term studies that help understand and manage the natural environment for future generations. He completed a B.Sc. (Hons) at the University of Adelaide and a Ph.D. at Monash University. His work on the Coorong and declining woodland birds is well known. He frequently provides informed comment on wildlife and environmental issues to politicians, the general public and the media. He was the recipient of the SA Great Award for the Environment (1 9 9 9 ), t h e P re mi e r’s S c i e n c e Excellence Award for Excellence in Research for Public Good Outcomes (2006), received a National Carrick Citation for environmental education (2006) and was appointed a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to conservation, education and the environment (2008).

These ‘hotels’ can be bundles of bamboo, straws or twigs, mudbrick blocks or wooden bee blocks with drilled holes in them.

If you want to help our environment by increasing our native bee population, there is a lot of information about it on the internet. Do your research on different types of native bees and work out which native plant species you need and the type of bee hotel with best suits different species. Good luck!

f you think of bees, you probably think of black and gold honeybees and a painful sting! But did you know that a growing number of people are trying to attract bees to their gardens?

The types of bees they are trying to attract however are NATIVE BEES. And they are very important to our environment.

There are more than 200 native bee’s species in the Adelaide Hills region alone, largely active between September and April. These native bees – including blue-banded bees, masked bees, leafcutter bees and resin bees – are not aggressive and only sting if you grab them.

Why are they becoming more popular?

Unlike the introduced European honeybee, native bees don’t produce honey on a large scale. So why are they so important?

A wide range of native plants rely totally on native bees for seed production and without pollination we would lose many species. Native bees are also good pollinators of fruit and vegetables. Blue Banded bees are particularly popular with tomato growers.

So how do we attract them?

Native bees need food, places to nest and protection. They rely on pollen and nectar for food and feeding their offspring, with flowering native plants the best. Try planting Christmas Bush (Bursaria spinose), Acacias and Melaleucas for starters.

As well as making sure you have the right native plant species in your garden, think about making your own bee hotels to ensure they have a place to live.

Vanishing Bee Movie Most of us take bees for granted but when we consider that without bees the development of life on earth may have been very different and conditions for human development may not have existed at all. Bees pollinate 80% of flowering crops which constitutes one third of the food we eat.

What would happen if bee numbers declined?

This is what is happening across the planet. Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon threatens the loss of much more than honey as we depend on these honeybees to pollinate 1/3 of the food on our tables. The movie ‘Vanishing of the Bees’ chronicles the innermost thoughts and feelings of beekeepers and scientists as they fight to preserve the honeybee and make it through another day.

Featuring experts like author Michael Pollan, the film also presents a platform of solutions, encouraging audiences to be the change they want to see in the world. This award winning documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between

he Resource Centre would like to thank local residents who pick up rubbish on their daily walk.

Normanville and Yankalilla always seem to be relatively clean towns, but on seeing what a couple of our members pick up each week on their brief walks is beyond believable. Perhaps the area seems nice and clean because diligent community members are taking the time to pick up rubbish.

One NNRC member walks from Normanville to Carrickalinga at least once a week and fills up 2 or more big plastic bags each time. Half of the rubbish is plastic which is a great reason for us all to join in Plastic Free July and try and stop using items that will never biodegrade.

The photo below shows rubbish picked up from the car park by the Lady Bay shacks to the shacks by the Hobart anchor car park, the walker came across a large blue plastic bag and picked it up.

Consequently this short walk turned into a fairly long one time wise, because she then picked up string, rope, plastic, etc. and placed it in the original bag. She was really shocked and somewhat disgusted to find that she easily filled the bag and could have still picked up more.

The beach, the parks, the community belong to all of us. Therefore it is everyone's responsibility to keep these areas clean. If you see a bit of rubbish –pick it up. Be part of the solution – not part of the problem.

These stems can be up to 1.5 metres tall, and are segmented, looking very much like bamboo! Whereas the leaf-sheaf is smooth, the leaf-blade surface is ‘scaberous’ (rough, as if it is covered with scabs). The plant occurs as a loosely tufted clump. As can be seen from the second photo, the seed stem has several spirals of branches; branches in turn divide into secondary branches which bear clusters of the grass flowers.

he ‘Christmas in July’ session at the Roman Villa B&B kindly hosted by Sue and Paul Elliot proved to be most enjoyable, with good festive food and drink, lively company, good weather and perfect surroundings. The theme for the art was ‘I don’t have time’. So we set out to prove that time is really not the main problem with producing a work of art but the artist’s mind set – ‘How much do I want to create a painting?’ We kept everything simple as possible for this session, by using four pieces of plain drawing paper, any form of mark making media -pencils, charcoal, pastels, etc and a picture to copy. The main emphasis of the exercise was ‘Time’. Picture 1 was timed for 30 minutes, 2, 20 minutes, 3 15 minutes and 4, 10 minutes. The interesting part was that after the first

Yankalilla Art drawing the members were discovering more details in their copypictures and worked at a faster rate thus completing their picture in a shorter time because that first drawing had set the pattern in their minds for the following ones. It was also interesting to observe the concentration of each member working under a time limit. It might sound a rather boring concept but everyone enjoyed the experience. After a lovely lunch and chat our second time session was a really ‘fun’ exercise, which produced mini-works of art, definitely destined for one of the great galleries of the World. Each person made a mark on her paper and passed it around and added to until it reached its owner and she then added a final mark. This simple exercise, strange to say,

fter a bad cold and flu season you may be suffering a recurrence of chronic back problems or perhaps developed back pain for the first time. This may be due to long term coughing, sneezing and too much sitting/resting. Quite often the pain does not settle on its own and can become a chronic problem leading to permanent damage.

Physiotherapists not only provide relief from back pain, they are able to give advice and exercises to prevent recurrences. Exercises will be devised to suit the individual that can be done either at home or work.

Sitting, especially incorrectly, coughing, sneezing, prolonged bending or twisting all cause increased pressure through the discs (shock absorbers) of your spine. Long term sitting has been described as bad for your mental health as well as your body. When the normal hollow (lordosis) of the back is lost for long periods whilst sitting, back pain may develop.

Sitting in a recliner chair with legs elevated also creates back pain.

I have been a physiotherapist for 40 years now and have run a successful practice in Normanville/ Yankalilla for the past 24 years. Treatment does not have to be rough and forceful and is ineffective if there is tension/resistance in the surrounding soft tissue. I often use myofascial techniques to release tightness in muscles before doing mobilisation or manipulation to a tight, painful joint. I will regularly apply this to the iliopsoas muscle (stitch muscle) which is often tight due to “living in a shortened world”. A tight iliopsoas muscle can not only cause lower back pain but can also be responsible for neck pain, headaches, frequency of urination, discomfort getting to sleep at night, constipation and abdominal pain.

As well as being a physiotherapist I have been a Bowen Therapist for 15 years. Bowen Therapy was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen from Geelong. It involves gentle soft tissue manipulation to allow one’s body to heal itself. I have had great results treating many conditions including headaches, morning sickness, restless legs/ cramps, incontinence, tennis elbow and foot problems.

Normanville Physio sells products that may be helpful to alleviate the pain of tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis (heel pain) and back pain when sitting etc.

Long term back problems can be helped considerably with physiotherapy. It is not “normal” to suffer back pain even if your parents and grandparents did.

Lions Club of Yankalilla

A

s a result of a very successful year of fundraising from a range of activities, namely Tent Hire, B.B.Q. Catering, Sheep Shot, Papers & Cans, Wood Sales, 4x4 Tours, Bingo Stall, Xmas cakes, Quiz night etc, Lions have been able to distribute a significant proportion of monies raised back into the local community.

The main recipients of donations were: The Museum for a shed extension, Myponga Bowling Club (Defibrillator), Yankalilla Area School (Social Justice Fund, The Dux of the School, and Public Speaking Awards), Run Yank Run, Pastoral Care Worker (Combined Churches), New Years Eve Pageant, Myponga Primary School, Cows Create Careers.

Support also went to a range of Lions medical and research programs ranging from Childhood Cancer, Eye Health, Prostate Cancer, Drug Awareness, Dementia and the training of Hearing dogs.

High on the Clubs priorities include the financial assistance to their National and Overseas Aid and Disaster appeals.

Lions acknowledge the generous support shown by the community and local businesses in assisting us to achieve our goals. Throughout the year the efforts of our members resulted in us being able to donate $23,700 to the above worthwhile organisations.

Handover Dinner

onday July 6th saw a happy band of likeminded people gathered together at the Yankalilla Sporting Club to participate in the 30th Handover Dinner of the Yankalilla and District Lions Club and the induction of President Elect Graham Buttery and the Board of Directors for 2015-2016.

Annette Slater, Principle of Myponga School was our inductee for the evening and accompanied by her husband John, was cordially welcomed by all the Lions members.

Amongst the invited Guests were; Michael Pengilly. M.P., Yankalilla Mayor Glen Rowland and his wife Joy, Lions Zone Chairman David Virgo, Christine Bell, Principle of Yankalilla Area School, Victor Harbor and Port Elliot Lions president, Greg Davis along with Garry and Gail Edwards and Joylyn Tiller.

The evening was both thought provoking and historically interesting through the speeches made by visitors and members alike and the serious side of proceedings was balanced by a relaxing, happy atmosphere. This was truly enhanced by an excellent three course meal skillfully provided by

George and his merry band of culinary wizards of the Yankalilla Sporting Club, who thoroughly deserved their vote of thanks.

Records showed that much had been achieved in and around the area over the last year, on a variety of projects, by the physical and financial support of the members of the Yankalilla and District Lions and this service has been much appreciated in the community.

Melinda Fogden was thanked for her graceful and capable chairing of the proceedings, and thanks were given to visitors and members for attending this important event in the Lions calendar.

To bring the evening to a fitting close Michael Fogden read the Lions Club ‘Ethics’.

he Annual General Meeting day (July 17) commenced with craft during the morning under the capable hands of the Craft Secretary Sylvia Green. In the afternoon our president Doris Gilbert welcomed our members to the business part of the day. A warm welcome was extended to our Group President Trenna Eatts and two new members Di Yianni and Davina Quirke. Trenna was invited to conduct the election of officers for the next financial year. Elected was President - Doris Gilbert, Secretary - Pat Bilney, Treasurer - Denise Walding, Craft Secretary - Maureen Stone.

Meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday in the month commencing at 9.30am for craft and 1pm for the business meeting in the Sanders Hall. If you are interested in joining our group we would love to have you. Ring Doris Gilbert 85583215 or Pat Bilney 85582806.

Quilters Success Supports Community

ollowing their extremely successful Quilt Exhibition held in April 2015, Inman Quilters have had the pleasurable task of sharing the proceeds from the raffle monies raised, to their nominated charities.

The main charity was the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group which survives on donations and their own fund raising. Inman Quilters were very pleased to present a cheque for $1000.00 to Mr John Francis, President of the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group to assist with their on-going expenses.

Mr Francis expressed grateful thanks on behalf of the Cancer Support Group. As he explained, the group gets no Government support and the increase in clients utilizing the service over the 2013/14 year, rose by 40%. The service can only be as good as the support that it receives from the community – and that support is truly appreciated.

Additionally, Inman Quilters have donated $700.00 to the Commando Welfare Trust and $300.00 to the Inman Valley CFS, bringing to $2000.00 the total monies available for donation to our nominated charities.

The money was raised through the sale of raffle tickets (prizes being two beautiful quilts) and we sincerely thank the Southern Fleurieu community for supporting our efforts.

Lions support Yankalilla Area School’s Social Justice Budget

ankalilla Area School has a Social Justice budget to support disadvantaged students in accessing all the opportunities that are part of daily school-life.

The money is used to help participation in camps, excursions, sporting events and other school activities, even uniforms and food.

Yankalilla Lions President Graham Buttery and Bruce Trigg recently presented the school’s Principal Christine Bell and Deputy Sonia Parker with a substantial donation towards Social Justice.

The money will provide a number of students with memories, experiences and opportunities they otherwise would not have.

YAS is very thankful to Yankalilla and Districts Lions Club for their kindness and generosity, on this occasion and so many others.

he Rotary club of Yankalilla held their annual changeover lunch on June 28th at the Yankalilla bowling club. Once again the catering team at the bowls club provided us with a superb meal.

Guests were welcomed by President Don Law and they included, District Governor Elect Sam Camoreale, Assistant District Governor Craig Maidment, Member for Finniss Michael Pengilly and Yankalilla Mayor Glen Rowland. An elite selection of friends and supporters attended and they enjoyed the afternoon.

MC for the day was Chris Thomas who kept the afternoon flowing in his usual inimitable style.

Entertainment was provided by the ageless Johnny Mac who reminisced about some legendary performers he has encountered over the years The positions for the coming year were announced, with new President Peter Hawker. Lyn Gardiner will continue as Treasurer and Bob Miller will again be Secretary.

Don Law presented his annual report. The highlight of the year was the running of another successful Yankalilla Cruise. This event grows in size and stature every year. This event now runs over three days and is the major annual event in our district.

Don praised his wife Hanna and Moddy and Billy Peel for their extraordinary contribution and effort.

The club supported the Run Yank, Run group who sent a team of young runners to the Gold Coast to run a half marathon. The club supported international and national Rotary projects and distributed funds to schools and community groups.

He thanked the members for their support throughout the year and was pleased to report that three new members have recently joined the club.

The theme for the coming Rotary year will be: Be a Gift to the world. Every one of us has something to give – whoever we are, whatever our place in life.

We can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities, and our effort. Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in the world.
