We Have A Shed!

he Yankalilla and Districts Community Men’s Shed would like to thank everyone who has helped us to get to this stage. The cement pad was laid by Dion Pannell from Pannellcrete and an extra big thank you to our local electrician Peter Bell from Normally Open Pty Ltd, for installing all of our electrical requirements. You’re a champion Pete, thanks mate.

We are having our grand opening on April the 3rd at 12:30pm, everybody is welcome. We’ll have a BBQ and tour of the shed along with some speeches and encourage anyone who is interested in the Men’s Shed to come along.

We are now open every Tuesday from 10am till 2pm. We will extend

our opening hours to more days of the week and longer opening hours in the near future.

As always we still need more tools, if you have anything that you may think might be useful to us, contact Ash on 0439 047 336 and he’ll come to you and pick it up.

Writing Workshop

r Kathryn Pentecost, artistic director of Sealand Theatre Inc., will conduct the first writing workshop – in what she hopes will be a series – at The Centre in Yankalilla on Saturday 16 April, 11am – 1pm.

This workshop includes creative exercises to increase your confidence and skill as a writer – be it in the fiction or non-fiction field.

Pentecost has been writing and publishing for over 20 years. She has written numerous essays, articles,

press releases, plays for stage and radio, creative non-fiction, short stories and poetry. She is the author of Peace & War: 9/11 stories, and has taught at SAIBT, UniSA and Flinders University. Pentecost has also taught memoir and song-writing in the Adelaide Hills, at ‘Wairoa’ (formerly Marbury School) and at Stirling Library.

Pentecost believes that ‘writing is thinking’. ‘Too often people see writing as something that can wait for a particular moment of inspiration to strike’ she said. ‘This may simply be an endless delaying tactic that leads to ‘writers’ block’. ‘Writing is an active process’ she insists, ‘one where practice fuels both technical skill and creativity’.

A First For The Men’s Shed

he Anglican Church has been the first recipient of the Men’s Shed in Yankalilla (even before the shed was erected). Father Max Bowers, parish priest, made the request to make large crosses for the two congregations at Yankalilla and Delamere for use during Holy Week (the week before Easter). In discussion with Phil Walcroft, it was decided he would attempt the project, and two wonderful creations was the result with the Anglican Ladies Guild financing the work. The challenge is now out for a new project to use on Mothering Sunday in May. Fr Bowers said “It is a true blessing to see this men’s project happening in the

district and for the pleasure and comrade it will give to those who participate”.

International Women’s Day in Yankalilla

A

hugely successful International Women’s Day event was held at The Centre in Yankalilla, organised by Yankalilla Library’s Kimberley Hargrave, assisted by Claire Taylor and volunteers.

Kimberley Hargrave highlighted the history and significance of International Women’s Day which had its first event in 1911, but whose date became fixed as 8 March in 1917, in commemoration of a strike by Russian women involved in the peace movement.

Library members Coral Ward and Dr Kathryn Pentecost were the main speakers of the day. Coral Ward spoke about her favourite authors and her career, including becoming the first Equal Opportunity adviser in the ACT government in 1990. Dr Pentecost focussed on the topic of ‘Women in the Arts’, covering a wide span of influential women and also speaking particularly of her favourite author Helen Garner’s significant contribution to the arts in Australia. Pentecost invited the audience to consider how the arts shapes society, and how many women in the arts continue to break through the social and political constraints of their time, to create not just art but awareness, and to promote social change.

The event also included a pop-up gallery and art competition. Later, all the women who attended had a chance to catch-up or make new friends over afternoon tea.

by Lars Tharp of ‘Antiques Roadshow’ fame was outstanding.

The audience was treated to a history of the origins of porcelain in China and photos of the journey undertaken to take the ceramics across mountains and down rivers to Canton and from there, via the East India Company to Britain and Europe. Fascinating and informative, Lars engaged us with fact and humorous anecdotes of his own journey through the same area of China. After such a wonderful start, please come along to our second lecture and be transported to China once more.

Having lived and worked for 25 years in East Asia David has an insight into the life of Emperor Qianlong - an exceptional scholar, military leader and a highly successful “traditional” Emperor. His achievements in the fields of the sciences and arts are seen as representing his greatest contribution to China’s heritage. A specific aspect considered by David will be his project to update and revise Regulated Court Costume and Dress Accessories. While living in Hong Kong he assembled a collection of, predominately Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911), Imperial and related textiles/costume and dress accessories.

wo local artists are opening their studios over the ANZAC weekend, Sat 23 - Mon 25 April.

Contemporary art can be enjoyed in our community during the ANZAC weekend as Nicole Gilding, 51 Main Road Normanville and Rebecca Arman, 11 Dorset Court Carrickalinga open their doors to the public.

Like open gardens (but free) these artists are showing various artworks and are available to talk about their work processes and how creativity compels them.

Nicole's latest abstract paintings are layered, colourful and powerful.

Nicole has also transferred a ordinary backyard into a green, sustainable oasis and is also available to chat about garden ideas.

Rebecca for the first time is demonstrating the tradition of copper plate printmaking, and will be printing a complex multi-plate design. Seeing this process will help viewers understand how some of Rebecca's textures are built up.

demonstration is at 2pm Sunday 24 April at colourINN. Rebecca is also opening her 'Tell Him He's Dreaming' show, with blogs leading the viewer through an art trail that celebrates our community and its 'best kept secrets'.

he club held their AGM on 1st March. The new President is Des Chilton and the incoming Secretary is Bob Miller. Outgoing President Tim McCumiskey reflected on a good year and said his TIME had been made easier by the good nature of all members. The previous Secretary Warren Johnston deserves special mention for all his time and effort to keep the club bubbling along. He is now taking a break.

Our guest speakers were Corrine & Tony Harding who have started “Seavewe” sheep dairy & cheese making business on Hay Flat Rd. Tony got the idea of running a sheep dairy after visiting a dairy in Switzerland.

Upon returning to Australia he undertook practical studies. It has taken six years of trial & error to get the dairy operating. Tony often had to modify second hand equipment but he always found a whey!

They are currently building their Poll Dorset/East Friesian sheep to a maximum of 60 “girls”. Their aim is to supply small volume, high quality “ewe”nique sheep cheese to the local market. Their current range of cheeses are whole milk ricotta, fetta & white mould camembert style which is currently maturing in the aging room.

He still has to decide whether to brie or not to brie.

What was very evident was their concern for the welfare of their animals. Also evident was their dedication to producing high quality products. They are now taking phone orders on 0418 628 506. We wish them every success.

New Girls On The Block

ate in 2015 ‘Ronnie’ the last of the ‘girls’ passed away – a shock but we knew she had not been a very young bird when we bought her.

She was a dear and would follow us around wherever we were in the yard, crouching and wanting her back rubbed, making that noise that only chooks make that sounded as if they were content with their lot.

We pondered on whether to replace her or, even another three and finally decided to go ahead with some new birds.

It was decided not to take a chance on being caught with another trio of oldies on their way out, so finally set out for Mt Compass and joined about another 20 folk waiting to collect their ‘point of lay’ “Isa Browns”.

Seeing the flash harry containers the others all had to transport their new acquisitions, we felt quite ‘ma and pa kettleish’ with our hastily contructed old wooden bottle drink crate with a strip of shade cloth to prevent them getting out in the boot of the car on the way home.

However, hubby had come prepared and included a strong stapler as a temporary measure to keep the shade cloth attached. Mind you we had some funny glances from the others with their various take away boxes!

Never mind, we headed for home and the girls were released to have a wander around exploring their new surroundings.

They settled in quite quickly and snuggled together in the nesting boxes on new, fresh straw.

What we did quickly notice was they never moved away far from each other, once more convincing us that our previous girls had not been as originally ordered, (a) point of lay (b) not from the same brood.

When roaming the yard, for some reason they always manage to come up to the back wire door and we have quickly realised if the screen door not shut properly, the girls have no hesitation in exploring the kitchen. Try and catch two chooks that each take different directions, making it extremely difficult to herd them where they don’t want to go!

Then add to that, a border collie who has been trained for protection and doesn’t like the new girls at all, doing his best to herd them out in the best sheep dog manner.

Lots of squawking, barking, us yelling, the canary frantically doing circles in his cage and, even though each of the girls has had one wing clipped, they still managed to add their fluttering to where we could not reach to get them outside.

When I am asked what kind of a day I have, I

usually say with a nonchalant wave of the hand ‘each day is an adventure I never know what is in the offing.’

With our new ‘girls’ I sometimes wish I could eat my words, however I continue to regard each day as an adventure and mostly thoroughly enjoy what is forthcoming.

ookings are now open for the South Coast Choral & Arts Society’s next major musical production – My Fair Lady to be held in May at the Victor Harbor Town Hall.

The 40-person cast has been in rehearsal since January and has recently been joined in rehearsal by the orchestra which is expected to number up to 19 for the performances. As well a band of volunteers have been working tirelessly behind the scenes preparing the elaborate costumes, props and sets.

The all-woman production team includes director Cathy Venning, musical director Liz Eland and vocal coach Susie Lush with Carolyn Jeffrey as production manager.

Remembering Local Anzacs PRE ANZAC DAY SERVICES “Giving thanks for our local Anzacs” he Anglican Church is organizing two special Pre-ANZAC DAY services on Sunday 24th April.

The focus will primarily be remembering WW1 soldiers in general, but especially from the two Anglican churches of Yankalilla and Delamere, as per the Memorial Boards in each centre. Descendant family members, if still in the district

As people enter they will be given a sprig of rosemary (to be used later in the service) and a special focus will be created in front of the altar for the laying of a wreath where the ode will be recited and the last post played.

Following the services there will be a fellowship time. A special Morning Tea at Delamere, and a Sausage Sizzle Luncheon at Yankalilla.

The Delamere service commences at 9am and the Yankalilla service 11am.

he Club Events Co-ordinator Louise Allstrom invited coordinators of activities at Club Fleurieu to join her in a “getting to know you” afternoon. Co-ordinators are usually very busy people and there are seldom opportunities for them to meet together and discuss their individual groups activities in a relaxed environment. Louise thought that Adelaide Cup Day afternoon would be the perfect time!

There were representatives from the groups that meet on different days for a variety of activities such as Bingo,

Cards, Indoor Bowls, Mah Jong, Mosaics, Scrabble, Tai Chi and “Threads” Quilting plus members of the “soon to be operational Men’s Shed”. The afternoon was a great success with people hearing about all the activities plus plans for the future.

Bubbles on arrival set the scene and people enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere and responded by offering good suggestions and positive comments. Afternoon tea was enjoyed and people left saying that it was a worthwhile exercise and that they look forward to the next “get

together”. A list of suggestions was compiled and this will be discussed at the next committee meeting.

ur guest speaker for today was Andrea Ogier.

She amazed us with the story of her personal life journey as a pioneer patient in the field of craniofacial surgery.

Andrea was born in the 1940’s, the middle child of three. Her older sister was a perfect little girl and her younger brother a perfect boy. Andrea was born with a triple cleft palate and her mother found her care very challenging. With no roof to her mouth she couldn’t feed normally and spent a lot of time in the Adelaide Children’s hospital with a tube to her stomach. Her father was away as it was war time. This was before there was any known surgery for such malformations of the head and face. Her mother couldn’t cope at all and Andrea spent much of her first five years in hospital or with an Aunt.

Andrea felt that her mother didn’t love her as much as her siblings and at times felt rejected as she didn’t meet the standard her mother expected. At five years of age she had to start school. Where to send her was a dilemma and she couldn’t communicate but didn’t meet the criteria for Minda school or the Spastic Centre. She had to attend a normal primary school.

Andrea suffered immense harassment and teasing from a group of boys who would wait for her to arrive in the morning and they continued to bully her during recess time and lunch times. Andrea had no friends and was very unhappy. Even the teachers showed little empathy for a child with such problems and found it difficult to cater for her needs. It was a sad childhood and it seemed no help was in sight.

Some new migrant children came to the school in the 1950’s and there was one boy, Salvatori who stood up for her. Prior to that no one showed any compassion. She was never invited to parties and never had any of her own. Her father decided to keep her at home for a while as she was so unhappy. She had difficulty eating as food and drink would come out of her nose which was very embarrassing. Her teeth grew strangely, in two sets from the roof of her mouth and under her tongue.

Later on she went to a girl’s high school and the girls treated her very badly. One day when she was nearly 15, she was running in the playground and tripped over a stray dog, hurting her wrist quite badly. Her Grand mother took her to the emergency at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Her

wrist was broken and put in plaster. The Doctor, Mr Robertson had worked in Korea during the war and was a very caring man. He was more concerned about her inability to speak than her broken wrist and arranged a meeting with her father.

Andrea’s father was told that a new plastic surgeon was soon to arrive and that it may be possible to repair Andrea’s cleft palate. A young Doctor, David David had been inspired by work carried out with patients in a mental hospital and was to join the hospital staff.

Andrea’s father was keen for something to be done to improve Andrea’s quality of life as so many Doctors had said nothing could be done. He consented to treatment but only if it would improve her condition. The cost of the surgery would be $500 which was quite a lot of money back then. To raise this amount the father sold a block of land which he owned which was to be where a new home was to be built in the future for her mother. Her mother was not happy that she had lost the chance of her dream home.

Andrea was the first person in South Australia to have plastic surgery of such a delicate nature. She endured six hours of surgery, during which her mouth was stretched to twice its size to enable the roof of her mouth to be repaired taking skin from her inner thigh. She was required to stay in hospital for six weeks during which she received speech therapy and exercises to teach her how to eat and drink. Soft or vitamised food was all she could eat.

Andrea’s diagnosis had been a double cleft lip and palate and with no roof to her mouth. It was described as a Triple cleft palate.

Andrea was a patient of great interest and articles describing her condition were published in the Australasian Medical Journal.

A new home was eventually purchased in Rostrevor and her mother was reconciled to the fact she had a new home, if not the one she had hoped for. Andrea always felt that her mother blamed her for not having her ‘dream home’.

Andrea’s father passed away a few years later but died knowing that he had done his best for his daughter and her future was looking a lot brighter.

At the age of 30 a second operation was performed to further correct the abnormality of teeth and mouth. Mr Robertson died in the year 2000 but the specialised work continued under the guidance of Professor David David. Andrea is very proud of what she has achieved with the help of the Craniofacial Unit.

There are some things which Andrea cannot do such as blow out a candle, or drink from a straw.

However her strength of character shines through and you would never know by listening to her or watching her speak that she ever suffered such immense abnormality.

A Church Pastor once said to her ‘Only special people are given special problems’.

Forty years ago the Craniofacial unit was formed in Adelaide. The multi disciplinary team led by Professor David David is now renowned world wide for the surgery it does to help babies and children born with facial abnormalities. Over 17,000 patients have received treatment. One in five hundred are born with craniofacial abnormalities and 100 years ago such babies were placed in mental institutions. In the 1940’s it was a cause of shame with children hidden away.

Andrea’s own mother rejected her but her father saved her from an unhappy future.

Andrea’s book entitled ‘Finding my voice’ describes her life story. Part of the proceeds go to the Craniofacial Unit where she works as a volunteer.

Our sincere thanks to Andrea for her inspiring and well presented talk.

We look forward to our next meeting which will be our AGM on the 4th Wednesday in March [when this issue was at press].

recommended ‘Fat’ and ‘Thin’ mediums to help with flow-ability of the oil paint and ’Desolve’, a non–toxic cleanser, to efficiently remove oil from brushes. After a short demonstration on painting sky, sea and sand using only three colours, Ultra Marine, Burnt Sienna and white, and a brief spell for lunch, the members happily settled down to paint with Judith on hand ‘to lend a hand’ where needed. The session proved to be both inspiring and informative.

nce again it was delightful to see so many members at our March session and it was a pleasure to welcome Judith Sweetman, a new tutor for our group. Judith works in oils and enjoys painting land and sea scapes. Her topic for the day was observing the movement of water in the form of reflections, eddies and ripples. Capturing the movement of the light was an important part of her work. When painting, for example, a seascape, Judith works down her canvas ie; sky then sea then shore line. She usually allows, time wise, a day for each section of her work. Judith does not varnish her paintings, prefers white edges to enhance her work and when framing is required likes silver frames. Judith enjoys sharing her technique with other artists and brought along a variety of examples to show this technique including reflections of jetties in the wet sand, ducks surrounded by ripples in a pond, trees reflected in a river and waves eddying on a shore-line. She talked about the ‘magic’ of water in any environment as an inspiring subject for a painting. Judith often paints outside her studio and uses photographs for reference such as composition, light and shade allowing her skills and imagination to do the rest. She uses underlay washes on her paintings before fine tuning her colours.

Judith often works from a limited colour palette and uses good quality paints and brushes, mainly larger sizes. She also uses paper colour-mixing pads which are very convenient at clean up time. She also

Governor To Visit Second Valley

he Second Valley History weekend will be held on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May with both events being registered as part of SA's History month in May 2016.

The first event entitled 'Stone Ground' will be a dinner held at Leonards Mill on Friday 13th May. This special event will see Leonards Mill travel back to a bygone era showcasing authentically cooked meals from the 1800s.

On Saturday 14 May, the Second Valley Progress Association will host the launch of the Second Valley Heritage Trail. The inaugural walk will be officially launched by His Excellency the

Honourable Hieu Van Le AO, Governor of South Australia.

Additionally, the Second Valley Entrance Statement will also be officially opened by His Excellency with a ribbon cutting ceremony involving the grant sponsors, Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and the private sponsors.

he first recorded use of our southern coast goes back to a time when John Wise and Henry Field took out a Depasturising Licence covering the area. Wise, from Edinburgh, Scotland, had arrived in the colony on the “Buffalo” in 1836 and became friendly with Henry Field who had arrived in the “John Renwick” in 1837. Both began buying land as soon as it became available. Over the years Wise purchased land at Tunkalilla beach, (an aboriginal name meaning “Place of Bad Smells, caused by the stench of the rotting carcases of beached whales), and also land at Bollaparudda, and Callawonga, while Field bought land closer to the Bluff and Encounter Bay. In partnership they intended to raise cattle along the coast and bring them into Field’s sections near Encounter Bay to spell before slaughter. The meat was to be sold to the whaling stations. Wise employed several families from the Bald Hills/ Yankalilla area, milking cows and making butter at Callawonga and Tunkalilla, and shepherding sheep on the grassed land along the coast.

Among other early settlers in the area were the McKay family who milked up to eighty cows a day, by hand, at Tunkalilla. The milk would be placed in pans and left for the cream to rise.

This would be skimmed off and churned into butter. The butter was then transported by packhorse to Second Valley for sale. James McKay, a son, just fifteen years of age, was washed off the rocks near Tunkalilla Beach and though a good swimmer, was drowned.

These were lonely times for isolated settlers having to travel long distances for buying provisions, and when selling their produce. Horseback,

horse and cart, and walking were the options - no wonder most of the women and children stayed home.

In 1854, John Wise was thrown from his horse and seriously injured while mustering cattle near Tunkalilla beach. His companion took him to the Whaling Station at Encounter Bay for medical treatment. He died, however, and was buried at the Tabernacle Cemetery at Yilki. Mrs. Wise continued running the property and contacted a Scottish friend, Robert Macindoe Robertson to come and help her. They married, more land was bought and a shearing shed and cottage were built at Tunkalilla.

Robertson also established a fine home, “Appakaldree” at Normanville, and used this as a family headquarters. The family were so fond of their old home at Tunkalilla, however, that they spent their annual holiday there.

Arthur Wise, the son of John Wise, completed his education in Adelaide and returned to the Tunkalilla estate of his step-father, Robert Robinson, where he worked for about fifteen years, partly on Robinson’s land, and partly on the property he had inherited from his father (John Wise).

Excellent wheat crops were grown at Tunkalilla however there was a problem with getting it to market.

Attempts were made to ship the wheat by sea, but the heavy swell even on calm days made this impossible.

When Robert Robinson died in 1892 his son, Robert Alexander Robertson, already established at “Tonto”, inherited Tunkalilla Station and land adjoining Appakaldree. In 1924 James John James purchased Tonto, Tunkalilla and part of Appakaldree however he became ill and died soon afterwards. His estate divided between three family members, his

Getting the wool to market was a big problem, the hill having a gradient of one in four, with a maximum of one in two. Wilfred, known to be a superb horseman, handled his team well and made it up the steep grades. The journey from the woolshed to the large wagon waiting at the top of the hill was repeated until the wagon was full. That done, a larger, wool-laden wagon proceeded via Putland’s Hill to Yankalilla. A second man was required to work the brakes when descending Putland’s Hill and other steep grades. Residents of Hay Flat would come to the roadside to see the large load go by.

Eventually Cockrums, carriers of Normanville, did the carrying from Tunkalilla.

With adequate fencing and better sheep husbandry practices the flock at Tunkalilla increased. In 1950 the successful grazing property known as Tunkalilla Station was dispersed.

Wilfred’s son Lionel lived at Tunkalilla from 1951 to 1960 when Tunkalilla Beach land was sold to C.L. Bonython.

he season has continued to give strong winds leading to many capsizes but a lot of fun too. It is pleasing to see that the Yankalilla Council has reinstated the boat ramp and I understand that the flooding caused by unseasonable rains did lead to a dangerous situation and that temporary removal of the ramp was necessary for safety reasons. Thanks again Council for providing safe access to the beach.

On February 21st in Division 1, Dave Overall took out the first race followed by Roy Douglas and Peter Nicholson, but in the second race Roy Douglas won out followed by Peter and then Dave in a closely fought contest. In Division 2, Michael Graves won followed by Brian Matthews and then Kim Thoday. In the second race, Brian won followed

o all the caring locals who have inquired about Sabre over the past few months. He is still confined to his yard and separated from his companion (Shekinah) and still in need of surgery. I am doing my up most to keep him comfortable and as pain free as is possible, but it breaks my heart to think that his demise has been caused due to an inconsiderate and arrogant dog owner!!! An owner that has admitted to being, 'The Notorious Woman with the Out of Control Dog'.

Having used my mortgage repayments to pay for his treatment to date and to erect a fence in an attempt to keep him safe from any further attacks - I am now fighting to save my home. Yes, it was my choice to put my beloved dog before my loan payments, but that's how much I love my Sabre. Late last year, I approached Mediation SA in an attempt to resolve this dispute. I was advised that a response had been received agreeing to mediation, but later deferred due to Olga's partners work commitments. I must reiterate that I have no issue with her partner James what so ever, so I am at a loss as to why she has involved him - Olga is the irresponsible dog owner. During two council meetings last year with the

On February 28th there was a much larger field in all classes, though heavy winds and some minor mishaps changed this by the second race. Both Division 3 races were won by John Gratton followed by Ralph Williams, George Reeves, Dave Herraman, and Karl Meyer. In the Division 1, Peter Halsworth won, then Dave Overall, Roy Douglas and Matt Ward, but Matt was the only starter in race 2 and won by a mile! There was a similar situation in Division 2, with the order for race 1 being Michael Graves, followed by Paul Senior, Brian Matthews and Kim Thoday. Brian was the only starter for race 2.

general inspector, he stated in front of two separate witnesses, that there is a history with her and her dogs. He also stated that, being a "Rural Council" they prefer to keep the peace and issue warnings - well, it's about time they imposed the penalties under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 and maybe there would be less complaints, less attacks, less injuries and LESS STRESS. Earlier this year, Olga declined mediation (or should I say, James declined mediation) - so I am back to pursuing this legally. I am well acquainted with the justice system, so when I was advised by the magistrates court that this could be long winded - I was not surprised. Although I have made EVERY attempt to resolve this dispute without involving the already chaotic court system, I have been advised that - my attempts will be held with positive regard. This dispute will not be over until I decide it's over and I am in the process of taking it even further. With the encouragement and support of others who have grievances with Olga and her dog Jep and along with several other locals that are supporting my cause - I am going to make an example of those who think they are above the law!!!

and only 6 boats hit the water for the first race. Many of these went for a swim! Dave Overall was the only boat in Division 1, and Michael Graves and Kim McBeth took turns in winning both Division 2 races.

March 13th was only slightly less gusty. Roy Douglas beat Peter Nicholson in both Division 2 races, Kim McBeth won both Division 2 races followed by Paul Senior in the first and Brian Matthews in the second. John Gratton was followed by Dave Herraman and then Karl Meyer in both races.

NOW [while this was at press] at Easter on Easter Sunday, 27th March, we will again be holding the Wave Generator Folly Race for the third time (we thought the first would be the last but time will tell). This is a Le Mans start off the Beach with the slowest boats starting first according to handicap. The slowest boat will leave the beach dead on 11am. The course is a drag around the wave generator and back to the finish line.

It’s a really fun day and there will be socialising after the race as usual.

The club conducts races from 2pm every Sunday during the season (weather permitting) with sailors arriving after midday and rigging their boats. We welcome the involvement of anyone who has an interest in sailing, wishes to learn how to sail or to provide support to the sailing activities. People interested in getting involved can contact the Club Secretary (George Reeves, 0417348613) or just say hello on any Sunday afternoon during the sailing season.

he southern Fleurieu has a rock record extending back at least 1600 million years. These rocks are the foundation for our landscape and scenery. Join geologist Dr Pierre Kruse on a guided tour of our fascinating geological history, beginning with a short introductory talk at the Natural Resource Centre.

We will then visit Carrickalinga Head, Little Gorge, Wirrina and Second Valley to get a hands-on overview of the rocks of the southern Fleurieu.

A moderate level of fitness is desirable, as we will be walking a few hundred metres at some stops. Please wear strong footwear suitable for clambering over rocks as well as sun hat and sunscreen. Bring a picnic lunch. The talk at the NNR Centre will start at 10am and hopefully we will finish between 3 & 4pm.

Thank you very much to the 6 dedicated volunteers who turned out for Clean Up Australia Day. They play a critical ecological role through their ability to act as an environmentally-friendly insect control, with some species eating around half their body weight on an ideal summer’s night. These unique and fascinating creatures are the only mammals that can fly.

Bats can also be used as indicators for ecosystem health. Creating and improving habitat for bats will also provide habitat for other wildlife.

However, over the years, the bat population has been steadily declining. This is due to habitat loss caused by growing development and urbanisation, attacks by pets and natural predation.

Bats in South Australia - It is thought that nearly all bat species that occurred in the Adelaide area prior to European settlement in 1836 still occur here today, although their relative abundance is likely to have declined. Bats are still common animals in South Australia, but because they are active at night and many of their vocalisations aren’t heard by humans, they have often been overlooked.

Within metropolitan Adelaide there are nine microbat (small insect-eating bat) species. Found in most habitats, from woodland to urban and wet to arid areas, most South Australian bats are tree-dwellers. Bats roost during the day and are most active shortly

Microbats are insectivorous, using echolocation to navigate and find prey. They do drink, so are also found visiting creeklines and other water bodies like dams.

Threats - A number of pressures threaten the conservation of native bat species including: availability of roosting hollows, food, resources, predation and the presence of environmental pollutants. The primary threat is habitat loss through urban development and the resulting increased competition for hollows. A trend toward manicured gardens and cleared spaces has led to a decrease in the availability of roosting sites in mature trees for bats across the Adelaide region Habitat requirements - Being nocturnal, bats need places to roost during the day that provide shelter from the weather. Most bats roost in tree hollows or under bark, rather than in caves. However, for the more adaptable species, they can also roost in buildings and other structures.

In winter months, these roosts offer protection and a place to go into torpor (a kind of hibernation). It is important not to disturb bats during torpor as they may become stressed, causing them to lose their fat reserves and possibly resulting in death.

Bat roosting boxes – The provision of artificial roosting boxes will increase the number of potential roosting sites for microbats to use, and perhaps breed in. Bats are faithful to one roost area and regularly move between roosts in the area. By providing more than one box in your backyard along with retaining any natural hollows, you will increase your chances of seeing them and aiding bat conservation efforts in Australia.

Roosting boxes made specifically for bats differ from a more generic wildlife nest box in that: bats prefer an easily accessible entrance at the bottom and tight surrounds; they need internal surfaces to be rough so they can grip to it; boxes need to be draught and water proof. You can also put them on more than one side of a tree at the same height so that bats can move between them according to weather conditions.

This is a really hardy garden plant, with long, dense strappy leaves the whole year round, a tuberous/ rhizomous root system, and lovely, lanky 1m flower stems that abound in summer. Low maintenance, showy, grows just about anywhere, drought resistant…no wonder they are so popular! Each flower stem produces up to 100 blue or white bell-shaped flowers; each flower can produce a

three-sided fruit, and fruits can produce 20-100 viable seeds …that’s a lot of seeds per plant, to be spread on coastal winds! So please, deadhead the flower stems when the fruits are green (or earlier) before this lovely plant becomes another problem for the coastline!! Alternatively, buy hybridized cultivars that set very little seed e.g. miniatures, or Queen Mum.

research to gain a better understanding and have noted that there is essential and desirable criteria for RVFDs to which I am sure DCY staff are aware of and are taking into consideration.

However, one of the documents I sighted states that for years RVers have been pulling into interstate rest areas and other areas with free dump stations to empty their holding tanks. But, because of abuse, many states are removing dump stations from their rest areas, and campground owners and others view their dump stations as an expensive maintenance headache. The information further states that dump station abuse causes aggravation, creates a health hazard, and costs money. As for the latter I would anticipate that these costs would be rate payer funded.

So, as there is obviously setup costs as well as ongoing costs for maintenance of dump stations choosing an

appropriate number of the right locations and meeting the criteria for dump stations (and hopefully not at the toilet block at Normanville or at the Memorial Park) is critical and needs to be carefully thought through by elected members of Council prior to making any decisions.

r Helen Bryden will be joining us in May. Dr Bryden is originally trained in the UK and has been a GP in Australia for the past 4 years. She loves being a GP as she gets to look after all age groups and get to know people and their families.

She has a special interest in Diabetes care, and in women's health. Dr Bryden also visits elderly people who live in nursing homes and is involved in palliative care. She has told us that she is very excited to be joining the team at Yankalilla and having the chance to become part of our local community. Out of work Dr Bryden is involved in Surf Lifesaving in Moana (where she lives), along with her husband and 2 children. ince graduating from The University of Adelaide with a Master in Health Psychology, Lynda has been working as a privately practising psychologist in Adelaide and in Goolwa. Over this time, she has enjoyed being able to help clients achieve better psychological health, wellbeing and happiness. Therapies employed have included evidencebased approaches such as

Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and relaxation strategies. She uses an empathetic and supportive counselling approach to reduce psychological distress and enact adaptive positive experience and lifechange. She is well experienced in treating depression and anxiety disorders, psychological issues related to health problems including living with chronic illness, disability and pain, drug and alcohol issues, and relationship problems including marriage/intimate relationship difficulties.

Prior to working as a psychologist, Lynda was involved with several research projects, including investigating the health-related quality of life in people with eye conditions (Ophthalmology Department, Flinders University of SA), the experiences and psychological status of refugee children residing in South Australia (University of SA) and the psychological status and wellbeing of Australian Defence Force personnel after service in combat zones (The University of Adelaide).

On a more personal note, her passions and pastimes include enjoying time with family and friends, shopping and op-shopping, repurposing old or ‘iconic’ things, material crafts such as d r e s s m a k i n g a n d p a t c h w or k , gardening, walking, camping, fishing, boating, sailing, and other water activities.

Podiatrist Norm Scott

orm started his career in health care when he attended the University of South Australia to begin his studies in Podiatry. That was over 30 years ago; he has since completed further studies and has a Master’s Degree in Health Science.

After completing his initial training as a podiatrist he has worked mainly in private practice, and presently runs a podiatry and acupuncture clinic in Warradale. Over the years he has treated all age groups from young children to one hundred year olds.

The work he does covers all aspects of podiatry but he has a particular interest in treating musculoskeletal conditions.

Norm has a passion for natural health alternatives and is also a registered Acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine Practitioner. In this role he treats many different ailments anything from hay fever to back pain at his Warradale clinic.

When he is not working he is a volunteer for “Time for Kids” and is currently a part time carer for the organisation. He is also a member of “trees for life” and loves growing seedlings for his rural property near Yankalilla, where he plans to live in the very near future.

He will soon take up the position of visiting Podiatrist at the Southern Fleurieu Family Practice in Yankalilla, and looks forward to meeting you all soon.

Norm replaces Airlie Waller as the onsite Podiatrist. We thank Airlie immensely for the care she has provided to our Patients and wishes her well in her new clinic.

Celebrating a century of service Lions donate $100,000 for 100 projects

o mark the Lions Club International’s centennial, the Lions Club of Yankalilla and District have signed on to help Lions Australia give away more than$100,000 to over 100 local projects as part of its Community 100 program.

The $100,000 will be available in the form of $1000 grants to projects which make a difference to the community in the fields of youth, vision, hunger or the environment.

The Lions Club of Yankalilla and District are among more than 100 of Australia’s clubs chosen to form ‘Team 100’, which will help roll out the grant opportunity locally.

Local organisations, initiatives and projects in the Fleurieu Peninsula region and the surrounding areas are encouraged to make the most of the $1000 grant opportunity offered by the Lions Club of Yankalilla and District.

Lions Australia Executive Officer said the Community 100 program provides local clubs with the opportunity to reach out to communities and create new partnerships.

“If you can think of a community need, the chances are there’s a Lions Club doing something about it,” For almost 100 years Lions have shared a core belief that community is what we make it and the Lions Australia Community 100 program celebrates this belief.

“The program brings together our clubs in a campaign designed to drive awareness, while also

helping to fund new projects in the communities we serve.”

Lions Australia, which celebrate 70 years of service in 2017, was first established in 1947 and is currently Lions Club International’s 18th oldest club in operation.

Each year the local clubs of Lions Australia raise between $25-30million for the community initiatives, projects and causes.

“Where there is a need, there is a lion and nothing shows this clearer than by looking back in the history of our service in the Australian community,”

The Community 100 program is open for submission until June 30, 2016 and entrants are encouraged to apply online.

The Lions Club of Yankalilla and District will then select three finalists, from which Lions Australia will nominate a winning project by mid-August 2016.

nternational Women’s Day draws women together in unity and friendship to commemorate past achievements and highlight current social, economic and political issues. It also provides the opportunity to develop networks and facilitate partnerships between women, organisations and the broader community.

The Women’s Day Breakfast was held at the Centre on Thursday, March 10th, in support of the Fiji Cyclone Appeal.

Around ninety per cent of the population has been affected, the majority of whom are women and children.

The Breakfast which commenced at 9am proved to be a colourful and chatty event raising $370.00 for the appeal. Thirty one ladies sat down to a

beautifully prepared meal of egg, bacon, baked beans, tomatoes, pin wheels, toast, muesli, fruit juice, tea and coffee.

All those who enjoyed the food and companionship on the day wish to thank Lion member Tracy Taylor and Evelyn Buttery for organising the event, also Claire Taylor from the Centre for her willingness to make the facility available.

Beach Access

was most disappointed with the letters submitted by the Normanville Sailing Club and Barbara Matthews in the last edition of Yankalilla Regional News concerning the cover installed on the beach at the end of the vehicle access to the beach. I would have thought that both the Sailing Club and the Life Saving Club were both major beneficiaries of the cover which has been installed by the Yankalilla Council. My understanding of the situation is that the cover had been temporarily removed because of a risk assessment by the Council which indicated that the outlet of the Bungala River had changed course and it was nearing the cover and it could have been a danger to traffic using the cover, or in danger of it being damaged. I note that the cover has now been

reinstalled and, by the number of vehicles and boats on the beach in recent times, it is very popular.

I know that I speak on behalf of most of the patrons of the Jetty Caravan Park, I congratulate the Yankalilla Council on its efforts in making access to the beach easier and safer. To all those on the Council, both elected and employed, our sincerest thanks for your foresight and planning in trying to improve Normanville as a great place to live and play.

The Conscience Vote

he common view that this means, “I like, I’ll say yes” or “I don’t like, I’ll say no”, I find totally childish and inadequate for adults, especially

Members of Parliament. MPs need a mature conscience, so they can assess the needs of the electorate separately from their own preferences. The present situation, where a small section of a minority is asking for Same Sex Legal Living, requires MPs to ask the questions – 1. Will its introduction harm the community? NO. 2. Will it turn the voter into a homosexual? NO. So there is no legitimate reason for anyone to deny permission for the request.

Homosexuals are programmed that way. It is not something they choose. They are just as worthy as other people. If all the MPs voted yes, this would be resolved very quickly, easily and at no extra financial cost and no harm to anyone. So this group will have achieved their want and need for equal rights and a choice.

aving heard on the grapevine that the Normanville Kiosk was now a good place to go for a meal I booked my WAGS (widows) group in for lunch in March. There were 10 of us and without exception every one had a lovely lunch which was beautifully presented and reasonably priced too. The staff were friendly and smiling and helpful.

agree with J. B. Bennett that in an ideal community, rates would be based on disposable income, but we all know that's not going to happen. The only other option is the existing system based on property values. Mr/Ms Bennett's views do not negate the fact that assets are a form of wealth, or that under Council's proposed changes people in very high value properties would 'pay less' in rates, while the bulk of ratepayers - including struggling pensioners in middle-range value properties - would 'pay more'.

Happily, Council has since backed down from their unfair proposal - under pressure from the large number of community members who are strongly opposed to changes that privilege the rich. I suggest that we keep to the existing model - unless Council can propose one that is fairer to everyone.

he civil students have been busy with the steer shed building, wash bays and new watering troughs well done boys.

The year 10 Ag. students have taken on raising chickens to sell to the community later in the year.

A big thank you to Tabitha McGorm from Mt Billy Heritage Poultry for supplying the day old chickens.

Also a big thank you to Wakefield Grange butcher for processing our lambs for staff to purchase earlier in the term. We wish them all the best on Saturday 19th March for the Grand Opening of their new shop “Wakefield Grange Butcher and Grocer Store”.

There will soon be fresh produce for sale again in the front office.

he last three weeks Trudy and I have started a Parent Coffee Morning and it’s been great meeting both familiar and new parents. Our Morning Tea is a great way to meet other people in the school community. Some of my good friends were made as a mum myself meeting other mums.

Dad’s and grandparents are also more than welcome and we cater for the preschool children with some activities. The Parent Coffee Morning is held every Friday morning from 8:40am in the Cockatoo Café; if you get lost ask us or the front office.

All lunch time activities are running as per normal, Making Club on Tuesdays, and Lego Club on Thursdays.

he Yankalilla Twilight Golf season has come to an end. Those attending enjoyed a good season with the course improving from recent rains. The Summer Cup competition was close between

4 consistent players. With one round to go Joe Little was leading by 2 points ahead of Lorna Nugent. The final round was won by Lorna with bonus point giving her 39 points with Joe on 38. The 2015/16 season

Summer Cup winner was Lorna Nugent. The season wind up was held on Friday 18th March with a BBQ & presentation.
