Looking Through A Child’s Eyes’ – Photographic Exhibition 11th – 17th September 2007 Victor Harbor Civic Centre

T

he children’s photographic exhibition titled ‘Looking Through a Child’s Eyes’ was a great success. Cheryl Wadsworth from Fleurieu Families said, “ It was great fun putting the display together and the beautiful photographs provide a unique view of our community”.

Kylie Collinson from Young Mum’s CAFFE came up with the idea for the exhibition and Fleurieu Families was happy to resource the project. Fleurieu Families also located some photographers through local early childhood services to celebrate and raise awareness of “early childhood” and “Child Friendly Communities”. Fleurieu Families is a partnership between the Alexandrina Council, City of Victor Harbor, District of Yankalilla and South Australian and Australian Governments.

The photographers are from The Victor Harbor Child Care Centre, Goolwa Children’s Centre, Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre, Port Elliot Primary School and some are the children of Young Mum’s CAFFE participants. The photographs will also be displayed during the “Fun on the Fleurieu: Event on Friday 26th October at the Victor Harbor Indoor Recreation Centre and in Yankalilla and Goolwa once suitable venues are identified.

It is hoped that the exhibition can be run as an annual event with even more children being involved next year. Leann Symonds from Fleurieu Families will be working with Karlie from the Young Mum’s CAFFE over the next few months to look at funding sources.

i everyone Spring is officially here and we really need some locals to get out and do a rain dance of some sort.

Maybe it should be tried whilst naked...no, oh well just thought it might help!

It is that time of year when we have a changeover of sporting codes, contact details are in this edition for anyone wanting to take up tennis or lawn bowls.

Normanville Foodland has a new manager, we welcome Con Papamichail to the team and wish him all the best and look forward to some positive changes. We thank Mrs Royle for all her years of service and wish her an enjoyable retirement in the lovely Barossa region.

The Yankalilla Show was on the Sunday after this edition went to press so we will have a full wrap up in the November edition, of course it would have been a great day, it always is.

The work on the new Rapid Bay jetty is underway and apparently on target which is great news. Drilling for core samples began on 25th September.

Also great to read that work on the Yankalilla Youth & Community Centre is getting closer to being started with the “slab” being laid towards the end of this month.

Wirrina, Sunset Cove or whatever the name is has been getting a bit of press again.

Seems someone is interested in purchasing it yet again. Do we really care… or do we really believe it for that matter… let us know what you think.

Great to have a positive letter to the editor regarding the new KI Ferry operations, keep up the good work guys it is appreciated.

he soccer season has come to an end and the Yankalilla Dragons Junior U9's team did extr emel y well.

From rough beginnings an organised and competitive team has emerged.

Each team member having gained good skills and a true understanding of the game through the leadership and guidance of their coach Richard King. On Saturday the 21st of September the Yankalilla Dragons Junior team held their presentation afternoon. The weather was perfect as players, family and friends gathered at the Scout hall for a BBQ and

trophy presentation. Each player receiving an award for their contribution to the team and as an acknowledgement of their abilities. The Sweet Magic Sponsored Supporters Choice Play Maker Award (voted by parents over a series of matches) went to Laura Muldoon and the Coaches Encouragement trophy went to Lachlan Ryan. Well done to all players. Paul Jelfs as a representative of one of the major sponsors, Jelfs Group, presented the trophies to the players. The Yankalilla Dragons Soccer Club would like to thank all sponsors for their support and donations of various kinds. The club appreciates your help in building the YDSC in their inaugural year. he 1950s and 60s were the decades of great songs and singers, most of whom relied on material from the song books of earlier decades for much of their material. Composer-songwriters such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart and Jerome Kern wrote many Broadway shows that have long

American West Coast. It’s a swinging affair and a touch of nostalgia for those of us who enjoyed popular music as it was pre-rock’n’roll.

ome and enjoy a free community event at the Agricultural Hall and Show Grounds on Saturday the 6th October 2007. Starting at 4.30pm, this community event will feature games, a free barbeque, motor bikes and the showing of the family friendly movie “The World’s Fastest Indian”.

Motorbikes will be the feature of this event. Come and see the bikes ridden by the Christian Motorcyclist Association as they gather at the Show Grounds, with the promise of other riders also displaying their pride and joys. It is hoped that one of the machines on display will be the Australia’s sidecar champion motor cycle. In

addition to the bikes, the movie “The World’s Fastest Indian” will be shown in the Ag Hall after the free barbeque. This movie is based upon the true story of a NZ motorbike enthusiast struggling against huge and seemingly impossible odds to achieve his dream of building the world’s fastest Indian motorcycle.

This family friendly community event promises to be great fun and is being offered to the community “with no strings attached” by the 5 Uniting Churches of the South West Fleurieu.

t this month's meeting, the first to be held following our winter recess, Chairman Graham McAinsh, brought us up to date with our plaque project. It is proposed that any plaques dealing with parks, buildings and bridges, along with those that are named for people, will be photographed and published in a book.

At the end of the evening our past chairman, Bob Fairchild, shared with us one of the day to day trials of the early settlers. These days we take post and wire fencing for granted, the cattle contained on their pastures, the crops an uninterrupted sea of waving wheat.

In 'olden times' farmers had great difficulty keeping their livestock from getting into the wheat. At first they erected brush fences, but these had a short life and were a fire risk.

Post and rail fencing was expensive. (Posts were always redgum, and the rails bluegum).

'Live' fences were planted: briar roses, acacia, and gorse being common, however these 'got away' and became a problem. Later, when wire fencing first took over, the wire was a quarter of an inch thick and not galvanised. Therefore it needed to be painted!

The Historical Society meets at 8pm on the second Monday of each month at the council meeting room near the Mitre 10.

TWO BRAND NEW SPECIAL STAGES FOR AEROMIL PACIFIC CLASSIC ADELAIDE

T

he addition of two exciting new special stages will boost the 2007 Aeromil Pacific Classic Adelaide, adding to competitor and spectator enjoyment.

The two stages are both scheduled for the second day of competition on Friday 23 November and are certain to please all competitors.

Mt Compass is a 5.5km special stage described as a more traditional Classic Adelaide stage, technically challenging and tight, with some free flowing corners that are sure to please the Porsche crews.

The other addition to the 2007 stages, Carrickalinga, although difficult to pronounce will be easy to read, its 7.5km special length filled with free flowing, fast and easy to read corners with some moderate straights and is certain to be a favourite with the big horsepower entrants.

Aeromil Pacific Classic Adelaide clerk of course, Rob Hemmings has been overseeing the introduction of both new special stages and admits both are sure to have competitors smiling.

“Mt Compass is just what you expect at Classic Adelaide, with some fabulous challenging corners,” said Hemmings.

“Carrickalinga is a bit different for Classic Adelaide, with some easy to read corners that can be attacked at some speed,” Hemmings said.

“Overall, I think both stages will add enormously to the event and prove to be a lot of fun for drivers,” said Hemmings.

“Classic Adelaide’s 33 closed road stages over four days, will provide plenty of entertainment for competitors and fans,” added Hemmings.

The Aeromil Pacific Classic Adelaide gets underway on Wednesday 21st November with the prologue over two laps of a shortened version of the old Adelaide Grand Prix circuit around Victoria Park.

Official times from the 3.1 km Prologue will provide the seeding for the event proper, which gets underway on Thursday morning.

Day one of the rally will take crews into the Barossa Valley with day two heading down the Fleurieu Peninsula, while day three snakes around the Adelaide Hills and the final day on Sunday heads into the picturesque McLaren Vales before the finish in central Adelaide on Sunday afternoon.

The rally covers just over 1000 kilometres in total with more than 250 competitive kilometres over 33 closed road special stages.

Rotary Club of Yankalilla Celebrates 1000th Meeting

O

n Saturday 1st September, the Rotary Club of Yankalilla celebrated its 1000th meeting.

President Josephine Thomas welcomed 76 Rotarians, partners and guests to the dinner meeting, which was held at the Yankalilla Bowling Club. Amongst those present were our Local Member for Finniss, Michael Pengilly and his wife Jan; Yankalilla Mayor Peter and Madge Whitford; our first Rotary District Governor, Terry Edwards and wife Chris; President of Yankalilla Men’s Probus, Ed Pumphrey and wife Pat; Vice President of Yankalilla Ladies Probus, Wendelina Hawker; Lions members Mike and Melinda Fogden; and Rotarians from Strathalbyn, Goolwa, Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay. Many past members of our Club, and their partners, were also in attendance.

After 20 years, the Club still has three of its original Charter Members Past President (PP) Chris Thomas, PP Dr Lyn Gardiner, and PP Don Law and all three were present at the 1000th Meeting celebration. These three Charter Members are also Paul Harris Fellows. Mayor Peter Whitford is also a past Charter Member of our Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow is a prestigious and respected honour for Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike and is presented for ‘outstanding service’ to the community and Rotary International.

A special highlight of the evening was the screening of ‘Rotary Club of Yankalilla: The Movie’, a DVD

of the Club’s history produced by Honorary Rotarian Hanna Law. Comprised of photographs and other memorabilia, ‘The Movie’ showcased many of the projects that the Club has been involved in since its Charter on 4 December 1987, encapsulating the good times, the hard work and the fellowship enjoyed by Yankalilla Rotarians, their partners and families. Memories too, of past Exchange Students, Group Study Exchange Teams, and, not least, of members who have ‘Passed to Higher Service’, were invoked by this DVD. Tribute was also made to our ‘Sponsor Club’, The Rotary Club of Victor Harbor, and to the many sponsors, businesses and individuals who have assisted the Rotary Club of Yankalilla over the past 20 years.

Many of those present at the dinner also enjoyed reminiscing over a display of memorabilia and photographs documenting the Club’s history. The Club has been most fortunate in having had Club historians who accumulated and archived the photographic history of the club. Former Club President Grant Mayfield, and the late Albert Jones (Past President and Paul Harris Fellow) served as Club Historians for a number of years, and we owe a debt of thanks to them for having kept such good club records. Rotarian Don Law is now continuing this valuable work.

t our August meeting we had a Getting To Know You session, each member bringing an interesting item for

a 'show and tell'. The items brought in ranged from family heirlooms and photographs to some novelty pieces, and a Bacictes fossil dating back 180 million years. Another, which seemed a fossil in its own right when compared with modern technology, was a pair of hearing trumpets (circa 1880), made from rams' horns!

Supermarket Scanning Code of Practice

dislike complaints, and prefer to live and work in such a way that they are largely unnecessary. It is therefore with reluctance that I report as follows: On Sunday 9/9/07 I purchased 4 items at Yankalilla Foodland. At the checkout I had to query 3 of the scans - one to check the weight of fruit purchased as there is still no hanging scale in the greengrocery area, and the other two for price verification.

Both prices scanned were incorrect, viz. the checkout scan showed higher prices than the shelf displays - $10+ in lieu of $6.99, and $2.74 in lieu of $2.66. Whilst this may seem insignificant as a one-off, two out of four is a 50% error factor & unfortunately this is a recurring occurrence although not usually of such magnitude. Not only is it annoying, but also most time-consuming and embarrassing, and it does make me wonder how many customers are being overcharged for their items.

Mistakes may and do occur - we all acknowledge that, but without the normal 'scanning code of practice' in place, there is no real incentive for the store to strive for

n our little corner of South Australia, we have a treasure: Kangaroo Island. And we in our little corner of the Fleurieu, have another treasure: the ferry from Wirrina Cove to Kingscote.

The other day we caught the 8am ferry to Kingscote and returned on the 5pm ride. We drove around going wherever our fancy took us and we found it delightful. But what was even more delightful was the service, efficiency, courtesy and smiles we received from everyone associated with the ferry whom we came into contact with.

Good job, very well done. Kudos to all of them. And we strongly recommend others take advantage of these treasures.

Advanced tracks joining the more extreme circuits @ kemmiss hill, Second Valley Forest, Wirrina and Myponga Beach. All roads leading back to a central location to ensure tourism is kept in the towns. (All road lead to Rome) The Mountain bike riders Associations are very keen to open up more country to the sport. There are good models out there.

The biggest loser is the Yankalilla ratepayer, we know who the winners are just look at the resale prices. If council had value added these land releases the winners would be us, the ratepayers.

What I am trying to say if the community owns land and the council wants to liquidate it. Proper assessment needs to be made. If a developer can make a buck, why isn’t the council acting as a developer and doing the same.

Esplanade Square Leisure Precinct We could slice off some more land from the caravan park and build some more shops at Normie Beach. Council controls the environment so we have a coherent and visually stimulating facade.

Then lease them out with realistic rents. Split the rates to allow for the winter down turn.

I have participated in 3 Eisteddfods, as a performer and in 2005 as the Student Coordinator. The Eisteddfod is a fantastic experience, one can not describe completely.

The array of emotions felt, the stress, fear, excitement, but ofcourse fun and enjoyment. I have seen students who I always thought were shy get up on stage and explode with energy!

I don't often think people understand how difficult it is to get a performance like this off the ground. From my time as the student coordinator I gained a greater understanding of the time, cost and energy involved.

Especially when competiting against larger schools. I hope in the future Yankalilla continues to participate in the Eisteddfod. As a community we should continue to encourage and support the Eisteddfod and similair events so more students can undertake this wonderful experience.

WF enjoyed two workshops recently.

Betty Gubbin taught us how to create pictures on silk fabric. Even those of us who have trouble drawing stick people blossomed under Betty’s tutelage.

In the 2nd workshop run by Zoe Ferguson we created quilted book covers, we didn’t follow conventional quilting, but a variation on crazy quilting. One of our fluff girls used a sewing machine for the first time and was very happy as we all were.

Steve from Atavistic Alpacas visited on September 17th with his carding machine. He offered us the opportunity to card fleeces mechanically, as well as showing us some

SELLICKS BEACH MONSTER GARAGE SALE

he most easily accessible community garage sale in the southern Fleurieu is on! Just a stroll from the historic Victory Hotel and a minute off Main South Road the community of Sellicks Beach will hold its very first Community Garage Sale on Sunday 7 October 2007.

Sellicks Beach Community Working Team is a small group from the community working together to help create a sense of community spirit. This team is a not-for-profit community group.

Janine Power and the community working team of this year’s Sellicks Beach Garage Sale says, ‘Sellicks Garage Sale is looking to shape up to be a shoppers paradise with up to 20 sites booked already! This is certainly shaping up to be an Annual community event with the interest that is being shown.’

There will be loads of goods ranging from pot plants, children’s toys, household furniture, stereos, tools for the handyman, old cabinets, bikes, preloved doors, bric-a-brac too numerous to mention and so much more.

The community will hold a sausage sizzle at breakfast and lunch time at the Community hall for the hungry bargain hunters to grab a bite to eat while perusing the local arts and crafts on sale.

The Garage Sale will start at 8.00am. The local Community Hall at Riviera Street and Sellicks General Store will have maps with site locations of participating garages for the potential bargain hunters.

he ‘tree group’ now has a name Leave the trees.

This name suggests lots of different levels of meaning and connection to the environment. This is what the group aims to do.

Simply, we want to leave the trees.

We want to leave the trees because they have existed for a long time We want to leave the trees because of their place in the cycle of energy and life We want to leave the trees because they convert sun energy to food We want to leave the trees because the food sustains other living organisms We want to leave the trees because those living organisms sustain us We want to leave the trees because they balance C02 and 02 We want to leave the trees because they are beautiful We want to leave the trees because we need reminders about our place in life We want to leave the trees because we are forgetting nature We want to leave the trees because we are part of, not on top of, nature We want to leave the trees because we need to support the whole environment We want to leave the trees because we cannot reclaim what we obliterate Simply, we want to leave the trees. As a community, we need to make decisions and choices about what kind of community we will be living in, in ten and twenty year’s time. We need to make decisions about what kind of ‘progress’ and what kind of ‘development’.

Urban sprawl Bad for planet The state government’s plan to extend urban sprawl has been criticised by a world renowned environmental expert who says it will exacerbate climate change.

U.S. environmentalist and author Richard Register, says the plan “makes absolutely no sense” in an age when emissions from transport and energy use had to be reduced.

The State Government wants to expand Adelaide’s urban boundary by 2000 hectares, to meet demand for housing as the population grows over the next 20 years.

s we are now into the warmer months, boating activity is starting to increase, although the weather is very changeable. The rain for the garden and the farmers is some what disappointing to say the least.

Having two dry years following, while not unusual in this big country of ours, is going to have wide spread repercussions for the Australian economy and in particular small country regions. Well, the water situation alone is going to be a huge problem in the coming years, with a no easy fix solution. Being a retired farmer I can relate to the severe problems that our rural folks are going through at the moment.

The Sea Rescue Squadron attended five minor incidents last month, and reminded us what is to come in the next few months.

There were a couple of highlights that readily come to mind. We attended a ceremony at West Beach to spread the ashes of Ross Williams who sadly passed away some weeks ago. Ross was a log time member of the Squadron and will be missed by all who knew him. On our

way to West Beach on Sea Rescue 5 we encountered five whales between Normanville and Myponga. They put on a tremendous performance for us and we were indeed privileged to witness such a display of nature. I think Ross must have organised the show just for us.

The second highlight of the month was at the annual dinner of the Squadron, Sea Rescue 5 and crew was awarded the very prestigious trophy for the “most efficient craft and crew” for the State. I must congratulate the Skipper Steve Marshall and crew of Jim Stacey, Dennis Leavesley and Paul Brown on their achievement. It was a big surprise for a country flotilla to be awarded this trophy. One of the Adelaide skippers has already put us on notice that they intend to win the trophy back next year.

A bit of competition doesn’t hurt any one.

By the time this article goes press, we will have had our multi agency exercise with the SES, CFS, Police , S A Ambulance. The Yankalilla show will have been and gone and so will our AGM. I will give a report on all these activities in the next issue of the Yankalilla News.

A service that we provide that is not widely known is the spreading of ashes.

We have done a few down in these waters, but the Adelaide Flotilla has done many. There is no charge for this service but a donation is appreciated.

A certificate is issued with the GPS marks, name etc on it. If you would like to know more about this service please contact us. Another service that we will undertake subject to negotiation is some coastal survey work. If you have any special task that you wish to do please give us a ring and we will let you know if we can do it for you.

Talking Small Business Listen up !

O

ne thing for sure, if anyone is ever going to listen to you it will be when a customer asks you a question. I still say things that come out differently to how I intended.

Experience and a few past bloopers have the advantage of helping me hear what I am about to say before I say it. It doesn’t always work, but it is still worth the effort because first impressions do count and there is often no second chance. Mind you, I am still known for calling it as I see it.

The one I hear all the time is “Sorry, but that’s not my job.” Now that may well be correct, but is that what the person wanted to hear?

Before you ever say anything, have a think about how it will be interpreted. The simplest test is how would you hear it, if it was said to you. “Sorry, but that’s not my job” is heard as a negative “I am not interested” attitude. Do you want to be seen as negative or positive? Think about the different after-taste you will leave with the enquirer depending on how you respond to their question. This reaction will govern how they remember YOU. Why not go the

extra yard (or metre) and think about who can help the person you are talking to and do your bit by helping them along in the right direction.

Try these for so me other evergreens. . .

“I am surprised you haven’t heard about our product before” heard as “where have you been, dummy”.

Why not just tell them about it and explain why it can solve their problem?

“You’re the first person who has had trouble with this” heard as “you must be a grouch, a nit or both” Why not ask to find out what the problem is, listen to the issue and help the customer through … even if it is their fault.

“Sorry, it is closing time” heard as “I don’t really care what your problem is, I am off’. This potential customer now sees you as selfish, uncaring and a clock-watcher.

While people who habitually arrive on closing time are not usually good or profitable customers, make the effort, manage the enquiry with a smile and give them the benefit of the doubt …. it might be you next time.

The SA Whale Centre’s website currently reports that so far, the 2007 whale season has been very exciting with numerous sightings off Basham Beach, Surfers Beach and Middleton Point, as well as The Causeway, The Bluff, Encounter Bay and Waitpinga.

Elsewhere in the state, 67 Southern Right Whales and calves including three white calves have been recorded at the Head of the Bight Whale Sanctuary, Nullarbor, up until 23rd August 2007. Other Southern Right Whale sightings have been reported at Penneshaw Ferry Terminal Wharf and Kangaroo Island, while Humpback Whales and Pilot Whales have been reported in various other locations.

Celebrating Fathers at Yankalilla Children’s Centre

n Thursday 30th August the Yankalilla Children’s Centre held a Special Fathers Night.

Dads and their children engaged in fun activities such as Lego, puzzles, drawing, playing with trains and building with blocks.

For an early tea we all had a sausage sizzle and ice creams in cones.

Thank you Kelly (Child Services Assistant) for cooking all the sausages !

We sang some favourite songs, danced and had a story about “Daddies”.

The Director Cathy Tozer helped the children to present their fathers with a special Fathers day picture and a photograph.

It was a fantastic night at the centre !

Jervis, Rapid Bay, Second Valley, Wirrina, Lady Bay, Normanville and Carrickalinga to Myponga, on a daily basis, and send in reports of whale activity.

The only equipment such volunteers will require is a car and a good pair of binoculars.

The SA Whale Centre will provide training in recognising different species of whales and the sighting information that needs to be recorded.

This information will then be fed into the Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre and SA Whale Centre on a daily basis in an effort to enhance the experience of visitors to our area.

Undoubtedly such an initiative will make a further contribution to the success of the whale season on the Fleurieu Peninsula and South Australia.

YANKALILLA AREA SCHOOL SCIENCE WEEK IN THE 2/3 CLASS

T

he year 2/3 class is very keen on science and celebrated National Science Week in August by doing lots of interesting experiments centered around a theme of “Water.”

As well as being fun, there was a lot of problem solving and learning taking place.

We tested for water in some bread by toasting it and catching the water in a cold saucepan held above the toaster.

Water and straws go together very well and what fun that can be. It was more than just a little puzzling for our young scientists as to why water stayed in the straw when we put a finger over the end. By the look on Bonni’s face, she has got it all worked out.

WARRAWONG

n the 6th Sept. in perfect weather, the year 3s, 4s, and 5s headed off in a luxury coach to Warrawong Sanctuary near Mylor. It was pleasantly surprising how quiet 57 excited children seem when all are individually strapped in behind high backed seats. We thank Goolwa bus services for that.

We stopped at Chookaloo camping ground in Kuitpo forest on the way for recess and a run around – some students would have liked to stay there for the whole day.

The first order of business on arrival at Warrawong was to set up the sleeping arrangements in the tents provided. It was quite a feat to fit everything and everyone into the area without burying someone in the broiling mass of arms, legs, bags and pillows.

We were divided into three groups for four activities over the two days: skulls and scats, pond study, habitat walk and a night walk. Some early risers joined us on a Friday morning dawn walk. One group was even lucky enough to see a platypus. Other animals seen were koalas, possums. brush-tailed bettongs, bandicoots, potoroos, tammar wallabies, western-grey kangaroos and red kangaroos. It was amazing and fascinating to see how the Australian bush would have been before the introduction of feral animals.

The camp program complemented our unit of work in Environmental Studies on endangered native species and introduced pests and what controls have been implemented to protect habitats.

It was pleasing to hear the camp supervisors say how impressed they were with the children's behaviour. All went well and we thank the parents for supporting us and their children in this learning experience.

ANIMAL MATTERS ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE

A

ntibiotic resistance is becoming more of a problem in our world, especially in hospitals. This means that a drug that used to be effective in killing a certain organism now is only partly effective or may not work at all.

Causes of resistance are: 1. Under dosing with a medication. In this instance the organism comes into contact with a smaller than lethal amount of a drug, which enables it to gradually adapt to something that is toxic to it.

(This could be compared with adding increasing amounts of chilli to food until a very spicy meal can be tolerated, rather than just eating the very spicy meal without building up to it).

2. Not treating for a long enough period of time. Many infections can be due to several types of bacteria in the one site.

Some of the bacteria will be more susceptible to a particular antibiotic than the others, and will die off faster during the treatment.

The animal may consequently appear to have improved, because it is now dealing with fewer bacteria.

Ho wever, the remaining bacteria still need to be fully

treated. If the course is stopped early, the surviving bacteria will bounce back faster, partly because there is now less competition from the other bacteria. This means that the stronger bacteria have been selected for.

3. Organisms occasionally mutate, producing small differences. If the mutation occurs on part of the organism to which a drug is designed to chemically attach, the drug’s actions will be stopped, because it cannot attach Failure to maintain the antibiotic course can lead to bacterial resistance. This is where the organism causing your pet’s problem is now too strong for the antibiotic to control it. Resistance is a concern, because it means using longer courses of antibiotics and more expensive antibiotics to control the problem. In some cases the resistant infection may not be controlled and this can lead to persistent illness and even death in animals and humans.

The ability to be resistant to an antibiotic can be transmitted to other bacteria.

This can results in untreatable infections in other animals and also even in humans.

Your pet usually needs to be reassessed at the end of an antibiotic course (or sometimes during it as well). The vet can

then decide if further antibiotics are necessary. Sometimes the treatment can be altered or added to part way through a course to achieve a more effective outcome.

Occasionally there may be a reaction to the medication. This may take the form of vomiting, diarrhoea and skin rashes. You s h o u l d contact the clinic and the dose rate can be altered or t h e medication changed.

A

Rapid Bay Jetty works on schedule

consortium of Bardavcol and Maritime Constructions has been appointed to undertake the geophysical investigations at Rapid Bay for the new jetty. The work will include three parts.

The sonic testing work will start on the 25th September. A small sled will be dragged over the seabed and foreshore sending out ultra sonic pulses and seismic microphones will record the reflected sound. The timing and frequency of the reflected sounds will allow a profile of the sea bed to approximately 6 metres deep to be developed. The profile will

show how deep the layers of sand and rock are and the relative density of the rocks. The field work will take approx 3 to 5 days. The equipment will have minimal impact on the environment and will not prevent divers or anglers from using the bay.

A couple of test holes will be drilled on the foreshore to confirm the rock structure. The date will be compared to the sonic profiles with the two sets of data used to confirm the thickness and density of the rocks in the bay.

This information will be used to identify the best places to undertake the test piling, usually the hardest rocks.

Depending on the weather, the test piling will commence after the 5th October. Several piles will be hammered into the seabed to check that the proposed techniques will work on site. The piling will be undertaken from a barge using an eight tonne piling hammer and will

If impenetrable rock is encountered, a range of techniques and jetty locations will be investigated.

The results of the investigation will be used to finalise the design for the jetty. The amended design will be presented to the Rapid Bay Design Group for consideration before any construction work on site commences.

The Friends of Rapid Bay Jetty were presented an award for their work on getting a new jetty built.

It was presented to them by SARFAC (South Australian Recreational Fishing Advisory Council) on the 10th September in Adelaide.

t has once again been a very busy month for Normanville. The Club Captain Todd Scheer and Vice Captain, Mick Shipard visit to the National Lifesaving Conference on the Gold Coast proved to be a very worthwhile exercise and they were able to bring back a number of new ideas that will assist Normanville SLSC in the future.

Ann- Marie Hanak of South Coast Surf has taken on the important job of Junior Chairperson. One of our major aims this season is to increase

the opportunities for juniors on our beach and we welcome Ann-Marie to this important position.

The President, Geoff Moffat was invited to address the Yankalilla council about the club’s plans and its role in the community. He also attended the official opening of the “Between the Flags” exhibition at the South Australian Maritime Museum. This travelling exhibition celebrates 100 years of surf lifesaving and is open to the general public until 11th November 2007.

The surf season will open on 3rd November 2007 and we offer opportunities for the following memberships Nippers- age 7 to 13. This is an age group that can enjoy the water learn basic surf skills and have fun Juniors- age 13 to15. This age group can qualify for a Surf Rescue Certificate and participate in more advanced activities suitable to this age.

Bronze Medallion- age 15 plus. This is the basic qualification of the surf

lifesaver and on completion opens up many and varied interesting options to enjoy this unique lifestyle to its fullest.

Pony Club

t has been a rather quiet month for horses in this country with the equine influenza crisis in NSW and QLD. Luckily, to date this state has remained clean - Let’s hope it remains that way. I have included some guidelines from “Primary Industries and Resources” later in this.

Cindy and Carol were able to make the “Goolwa Pony Club Gymkhana” just before lock-down was enforced. Very well they did too, bringing home several ribbons each.

Well done girls.

Yankalilla Show - with horse events being cancelled including our planned “Pony Rides” we had to come up with something to keep us in the loop. Tracey Wilson worked her butt off to organise the ‘fresh wrap’ stand. Thanks very much to her and all others who volunteered to help with this fundraiser for our club. I hope many of you were able to enjoy the lovely healthy fresh “fresh warps” available on the day. Sean Gallager organised the farrier talks and

demonstrations that were very interesting. Great effort all round, congratulations again to the show society.

October 7th Rally - After an emergency committee meeting it has been decided that the rally will go ahead, but no horses due to equine flu. (If ban lifted horses will be ok, ring rally coordinators or a committee member). Christine and Alisha will convene a “Pentathlon” day. Teams of five can compete, each with a non-rider, in “handyhorse”, darts, “horseshoe throwing’, running’...maybe even ‘swimming’?? Pentathlon is really good fun and can include other family members for the non-riding bits. Please spare a thought for those who have brought their horses to share and adhere to the simple guidelines for equine flu safety.

The ladies also have several extra functions as ladies drawn pairs (9th Oct) Ladies Spring 4’s (Fri 19th Oct) Ladies championship 4’s (Tues 23rd Oct) and again (Tues 30th Oct). The men have Sat 6th Oct practice, Sat 13th challenge v Willunga at Willunga before pennants commence Sat 20th Oct. Its also time the “Night Owlers” got themselves into gear for the coming season with a practice session Tues 6th Nov at 7.15pm (after you have backed the winner of the Melbourne Cup). ight Tennis, and the warmer weather, is just around the corner so dust off those racquets and come along on Thursday 1st November, 2007 at 7.30pm at the Yankalilla Tennis Courts for the commencement of the new season. For something different, all people attending on the night will have their names put in a hat and drawn to see who you will be playing with. It is a social way to have fun, meet people and keeping those skills up to date. New players are always welcome, even if you haven’t played before. TABLE TENNIS

he Yankalilla & Districts Table Tennis Association played their first match of the season on Monday April 30th 2007. After the minor round the two Myponga teams finished first and second on the Premiership Table; with Second Valley third and Delamere fourth. On August 13th the Myponga Green side defeated the Gold team with Trevor Wendleborn their best player for the night. Delamere defeated Second Valley in a close match in the elimination final. Myponga Gold then continued to defeat Delamere and also the Green side in the grand final. After ten years of providing two teams it was great to see the Myponga teams play off in the Grand Final. Well done!

Presentations on the night were made for Sportmanship to Luke Bartlett (Normanville) and Scott Barwick (Myponga Green). The Robert Whittlesea Memorial Shield for the player of the finals was presented by Craig Martin to Shane Mignanelli (Myponga Gold) and the “Albert Jones Premiership Shield” was

presented by Gary Lloyd to the captain of the Myponga Gold team Mike Mignanelli. The Wooden Spoon, beautifully carved by Joe Curtis was shared by the Yankalilla and Normanville teams. On Saturday August 6th our team left Cape Jervis for the challenge match against the KI Association. Our team consisted of six men, Craig Martin, Trevor Wendleborn, Mike Mignanelli, Scott Barwick, Joe Curtis (all from Myponga) and Jack Kornaat from Normanville.

The ladies were Averil Jones, Ineke Hill and Desiree James (Normanville) with Coralie Law and Pam Mignanelli acting as team manager and chaperone. A great weekend was enjoyed with very hospitable and friendly folk. The “Tim Stokes Memorial Shield” was once again won by the Kangaroo Island Association. A big thank you to Sealink who sponsored part of our trip; it was greatly appreciated. Hope to see everyone again next season, new members are always welcome.

The Yankalilla Youth & Community Centre

t last the essential preliminaries for the construction of the Centre have been completed.

David Roberts won the tender for the position of construction manager and he and Stewart Gowers, Council's building planning officer, have obtained tenders from the various trades involved in the building such that an accurate forecast of the total cost has been obtained entailing some adjustments to meet the available budget. But the result will be a building designed for its purpose in which the priorities as recommended by the YYCC Planning Committee and authorized by Council will be met.

It has been quite an arduous business during which the integrity of a design tailored to the building’s anticipated use has had to be balanced against cost and we have to thank all those involved in the process from the architect (Michael Noble), engineers (Meinhardt PT Design), to Messrs. Roberts and Gowers for their industry and patience in progressing thus far.

You can see Mark Pearse’s sketch and the final floor plan. The “slab” should be completed by the end of October ready for a launchcelebration at the site in the Youth Park - mid November, then all “go!” from thereon in.

Are you Being Served?

T

he return of the popular British comedy of Grace Brothers brings before us an important question: Are you being served?

There’s something nice about being served. It makes you feel special – particularly if met by some one like Captain Peacock!

But, what is happening to service?

One time service station attendants fuelled our cars, cleaned the windscreen and asked whether everything else was OK. Now they watch from their counters while we do it for ourselves.

Grocers once came to the counter in a white apron, a pencil on their ear, wrote down our order and then climbed up and down a ladder to get our weet-bix, sugar and flour. Now, around supermarket corridors, people wheel trolleys trying to find what they need and then proceed to a queue, place their things before a check out person who swipes them across a scanner and tells them how much they owe.

It seems that businesses and banks get us to do as much as we can for ourselves – using our time and save on wages, work-cover and super.

Serving Serving others is a privilege. It’s a way of saying, ‘We care, and appreciate the opportunity to do something for you.’

We can serve in lots of ways – open a door, carry a parcel, care for the neighbour’s pets when they’re away, look after a disabled child for a day to relieve the parents, help some one sick, go beyond the call of duty to assist others and ever be alert to needs we can meet.

welcome our help. How wonderfully we’re served by fire-fighters, SES volunteers, those who provide meals on wheels, Red Cross, volunteer ambulance service and many others.

Those entering retirement may well have more time available to serve.

A Servant Jesus gave himself totally for others and served those in greatest need. His powerful miracles were a means of service. He turned water into wine for a wedding host, fed thousands from the lunch box of a boy and healed many diseased people.

At the last supper he served his disciples by filling a basin with water, taking a towel and washing their feet – and suggested that they follow his example in serving one another.

He stated his mission in these words: ‘For even the Son of man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Service for Jesus was both expensive and extensive. His greatest act of service was giving his life – ‘as a ransom for many.’

Criminals sometimes ask exorbitant ransoms, for people they hold hostage – like the Koreans held by the Taliban for a ransom of $25000,000.

Jesus, in his death on the cross paid the highest price to set us free. He has served us in the most complete and condescending way.

Of Jesus the Bible says, ‘…who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant.’ Phil 2:6-7 John Hutchinson johnhutc@bigpond.com

he Honorary Secretary of the Southern Group of Justices is pleased to advise that this community group, representing the interests and activities of Justices of the Peace and Special Justices residing in the Fleurieu Peninsula region, will conduct its AGM for 2007 at Victor Harbor on Friday 5th October commencing at 7:30pm.

The meeting will be held at the Newland Memorial Uniting Church Hall in Victoria St. and all JPs in the district are warmly invited to attend. All positions will be

declared vacant and a new team elected on the night.

Following the AGM, a light supper will be served, followed by a very entertaining musical interlude where we will explore the c o n t r a s t i n g mo o d s o f t h e contemporary pipe and electronic organs.

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

W

E have been looking at the practical matters associated with Christ on earth again and examining the bible evidence of its certainty.

Again please let me continue to draw your attention to these remarkable prophecies, this month particularly to the afflicted world’s needs. There will be no resolution to the afflicted worlds needs until the second advent of Christ. What is his purpose? In it’s briefest form, it is this: to “fill the earth with God’s Glory” (Numbers 14:1)and remedy all the evils to which man is subject.

When men multiplied upon the earth, and grew into communities, instead of divine regulation governing their behaviour, leaving God and His restraining influence man became rapacious and soon human force became the rule and it was not long before fighting resulted in the earth becoming “filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11) War in endless succession ensued and has continued to the present day. In the interval there is “law and order” as man pleases to devise it, and in some corners of the globe the result is mere repression, affliction, resulting in frustration and sorrow for many in the

earth.

The work of Christ at his second advent is to bring mankind back to the service and friendship of God, in which alone his true well being can be found. This can only be done by an open and visible manifestation of power. Do you thing the present incumbents will readily relinquish their power? The work of abolishing the present order requires divine force; and the scriptural language admits of no other means. “The God of heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms”(Daniel 2:44) “ Thou (Christ) shalt dash them in pieces like a potters vessel” (Psalm 2) “ I will execute vengeance in anger and fury among the nations such as they have not heard” (Micah 5:15) “I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms and destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations” (Haggai 2:2) Who will perform this work for God? God answers: “My servant, whom I uphold, Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth, I have put My Spirit upon him: He shall bring forth judgment to the nations” (Isaiah 42:1) All of these references are discounted by the Churches when they embark upon the erroneous teaching of a “kingdom in the skies” and assigning their members to heaven at death. This is not the biblical Kingdom referred to by the Lord in his prayer: “Thy

Kingdom come Thy will be done upon earth, as it is in heaven” The Church has conjured a mythical Kingdom in the skies instead of staying with the truth of the teaching of God’s Word the Bible. Listen to the beautiful words of Isaiah the prophet; words selected

by Handel in the Oratorio Messiah.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) Mary the mother of Christ was told “The Lord God shall give unto him (Jesus) the throne of his father David” (Luke 1:32). This is why the disciples were interested in the restoring of the Kingdom to Israel when they asked this of the Lord after his resurrection in Acts 1 “Wilt thou at this time restore the Kingdom to Israel?” He explained that it was not the right time. Nevertheless at a future time that would be inevitable according to Bible promises. Christ was crucified with a placard “King of the Jews” and he will be just that when their Kingdom is restored. The Lord

will be a king upon the throne of David in the place where it was formerly established. David reigned in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 8:15); Christ will reign. (Isaiah 32:1; Revelation 11:15).

David executed justice and judgement (1 Chronicles 18:14); Christ will execute justice and judgement in the land (Jeremiah 33:15). David made war (1 Chronicles 17:1-13); Christ will make war (Revelation 19:11-15).

The throne of David was a visible institution. So too will Christ’s rulership from Jerusalem. He will be visible in his beauty. (Isaiah 33:17).

Kings and princes will come from afar and pay homage to him (Psalm 45:12, 72:11). These are the plain truths of the Bible.

Next month we will continue to provide proof of the Lords visible presence in the earth.

SOUTHERN FLEURIEU CANCER SUPPORT & RESOURCE GROUP INC

F

riday 7th September saw Michael Pengilly MP, Member for Finniss, officially open the new Cancer Support Centre at 2 George Main Road, Victor Harbor. Michael praised the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group on their achievements and thanked them for their tireless work in the community. Aaron Puvi, representing the Honda Foundation, handed over the keys to the latest car which has been loaned to the group for their transporting of patients to Adelaide hospitals for their cancer treatment. He acknowledged that the car is also used to pull the groups trailer for Outreach Days and to events around the Fleurieu Peninsula. Ann Simpson, President, explained how the group had

outgrown three shared properties in the last 6 years, and thanked Lew Sanders, Pastor of the Christian Gospel Centre for letting the group rent one of their buildings. The Centre is now open Monday to Friday, 10am - 4pm, and the group is planning to offer many more services than before. Ann thanked Aaron for the beautiful Honda Odyssey, the groups second and pointed out that last years car clocked up nearly 40,000 kilometres in 12 months, mainly trips to and from Adelaide hospitals. Michael and Aaron joined City of Victor Harbor Mayor, Mary-Lou Corcoran; Kym McHugh, Mayor of Alexandrina Council and Peter Whitford, Mayor of Yankalilla District Council and about 50 invited

guests, for a delicious light lunch in the centre.

The Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group would like to thank all the volunteers who helped organise the event and Lesley and Yvonne who the following day took the car and trailer to Strathalbyn for an Outreach Day. Cancer patients wishing to use the car for hospital or specialist appointments should contact Ann Simpson: 85552 5152. New volunteers are always needed, especially for reception duties (2hours), and leaders and facilitators are also required for new activities at the centre.

Shirley Jones attended the Group Floriculture School at Victor Harbor on September 3rd and in the absence of the Group Floriculture Officer she showed members how to do modern flower arrangements, bringing two arrangements to our meeting. Shirley also was invited to attend a luncheon with other SA CWA International Committee members at State office (30 Dequetteville Tce, Kent Town) on 31st in honour of the ACCUW World President Dato Ursula Goh of Malaysia. Dato, who only had a short time in SA was a guest speaker at WAB conference held in Mannum. The photograph below is Pat Sharky deputy President of the International committee, Dato and SA CWA president Mary Shattock. Cathy Reid & Doris Gilbert had an enjoyable but busy day at the SA CWA Show Café. It was interesting to learn that Laucke Flour Mills in conjunction with SA CWA have launched a packet scone mix. The packet has the SA CWA emblem on the front and a brief history of CWA on the side and recipes, contains 2 packets of scone mix each making approx 12 scones. We can recommend these scones. Our flower competition was judged by Wyn Kenyon and she gave Joyce Hall 1st, Doris Gilbert 2nd and Blanche Harvey 3rd for their blooms. Glenda Oats received flowers for her birthday in September.
