Sam (Slammin) Harding

T

he loss of our friend, Sam Harding, (aka ‘Slammin’) has changed our lives forever. It was an honour to know him and we have the most awesome memories of his fun loving, cheeky and caring nature. We remember fishing on the Broome trip, numerous parties and of course Slammins Tarantula Man Dance.

Our world was a better place because you were in it and we were lucky to have called you a friend. The boys will always take you fishing and we will all have you in our hearts. Never forget you mate.

Well, there’s uranium in them there hills! The Wild Dog Creek uranium mine which last operated in 1954-5 and the surrounding area, is attracting interest from a uranium mining company. At this stage it is just a bit of exploration, but there may be further developments down the track.

We could be glowing in the dark before we know it!

“And The winner is”, the Southern Fleurieu and the prize is a new Rapid Bay Jetty.

Funding has been approved to build this new jetty parallel to the existing jetty which will remain as a marine habitat. The unstable section close to shore will be demolished, leaving no direct access. Good news for LSD lovers! (That’s Leafy Sea Dragon to the uninformed).

The Yankalilla Show is over for another year and as we were in press at the time we will have a report in next issue. Hope you enjoyed it.

November 10th is the closing date for voting in the Yankalilla Council Election. Unless you live in the Flinders Ward that is, where the

two nominees will be elected unopposed, you will have the chance to vote for your Councillors for the next few years. Fill in the voting form and take an active part in your future in this district. Or stick your head in the sand and let someone else decide for you. The first option sounds better, don’t you think?

Soccer at Yankalilla

A

f t e r m u c h discussion and voting, including over 60 kids and adults, the soccer team based in Yankalilla but incorporating players throughout the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula is to be named the "Yankalilla Dragons Football Club". Seen here is the logo that will be proudly worn on the soccer strips as a representation of the club and its Fleurieu connection with the surrounding district.

There will be a two week break for the school holidays and training will commence the first Monday of school Term 4 starting on the 16th of October. A big thanks to all kids and adults that have trained and supported the beginnings of a new club in Yankalilla. It's exciting to see young kids that don't play any

sport, joining in, learning new skills and working together (passing/defending) to score goals.

After the 2 week break we are looking at entering a 5 aside competition, with the aim of entering three to four teams in the 11 aside league in the new year.

We are always looking for sponsors and people of any age to play for the Yankalilla Dragons.

ankalilla’s Robert Bigg has swapped his quiet hometown for an experience of a lifetime in the Middle East. He’s normally based in Adelaide but now he is one of the 180-strong Royal Australian Air Force detachment operating surveillance flights over the Persian Gulf.

Biggsy to his mates, Robert joined the Air Force after leaving school four and a half years ago. With no occupational experience, he decided that having a trade qualification would be the best option and signed up as an avionics technician. He’s now been promoted to Corporal.

"I've done heaps of deployments within Australia and I've also been to New Zealand but this is my first overseas deployment on an operation. I'm really enjoying the work," Robert said. “It's good to be doing what you're trained to do and doing it for real. I'd been told about the heat, but you don't appreciate the difference it can make until you’re turning spanners!"

"Being an avionics technician is great. I’m responsible for the electrical components on the aircraft which includes the aircraft electrical system, instruments, armament and radar equipment inside the airframe," said Robert.

Brought up in Yankalilla, Robert attended Gawler East Primary School and completed his secondary education at Yankalilla Area School. His mum still lives in the area, but his brother decided to follow in Robert's footsteps and is currently undergoing trade training

in Wagga Wagga.

Robert looks forward to returning to cooler weather, his hobbies and of course, his partner of almost two ye a r s . "Th i s i s my fi r s t deployment, and it's my partner’s as well. She's done it just as tough as me because I'm not there to help out with just general day to day chores. It's a big adjustment for anyone and I can't say how much I appreciate her love and support.

She's wonderful," said Robert.

"I'm looking forward to the two of us heading to the beach for a quiet weekend and a bit of fun riding the Jet ski. At some stage, I know I'll end up back in the shed tinkering with the car and sharing a few beers with my mates. For now, I'm looking forward to my first weekend home and sharing it with her, watching the AFL Grand Final."

The Middle East is the furthest Robert’s been from home so far.

He was also promoted to Corporal mid August, which has added to the experience. "Being promoted over here was a great feeling.

Being here just added to the excitement of putting on a new rank.

"I maintain aircraft while I'm home but you can't help smiling when you watch an aircraft launch after you've spent twelve hours working hard on it. It's what makes our efforts all worthwhile."

Robert is one of the 1400 Australian Defence personnel now deployed to the Middle East to help post-Saddam Iraq get back on its feet. Known as Operation Catalyst, it is the Australian Government's contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq.

Working with the Iraq Government and other coalition forces, the Australian Defence Force continues to contribute to a secure and stable environment in Iraq and to assist national recovery programs.

Community Lanterns for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival

ocal artist Karen Hammat is planning a community art event for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival. This event, entitled Our Fragile Coast - Lantern Project, will involve different community groups making giant shell-shaped paper lanterns. The lanterns will be displayed in a procession event on Normanville Beach on the evening of Sat April 28th during the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival.

Karen will be working with

groups at the Yankalilla and Rapid Bay schools in first term 2007 when the school students will create their shell lanterns.

Over the next few months other c o m mu n i t y g r o u p s wi l l participate in free workshops to learn lantern-making skills and produce a giant lantern for the Festival.

“Why do we need to go to the moon?”

T

his was one of the intere st in g q ue stio ns addressed to Bill Bradfield at our August meeting. Bill came to speak about Astronomy and the history of space travel. Bill is well qualified to speak on these topics as he was the Principal Research Scientist at Salisbury and spent 33 years investigating rocket propulsion.

Bill was born and educated in New Zealand and he was interested as a child in Astrono my and rocket propulsion. He chose the latter as a career and Astronomy became his hobby. He was awarded a Member of Australia for services to Astronomy The study of Astronomy started with the Ancient Greeks especially Pto lemy who strengthened the idea that the earth was the centre of the uni ver se. T her e was a perception of a limitless atmosphere. Copernicus revived

the theory that the earth moved around the sun.

Space travel appeared in novels by authors such as Jules Verne and A G Wells but the first manned landing on the moon wasn’t until 1969. The criteria for becoming an astronaut was very strict at the beginning but now there are plans for tourists in space, although most plans for tourists are for sub orbital flight; straight up and down.

Bill pointed out that the problem with travelling to Mars, for instance, was to make sure that Mars was there when you arrived. Calculations would have to be exact as the earth is moving and so is Mars and for the question “Why go” one of the answers was that striving for the stars was very political and competition between the nations was high but the older answer is mo r e r o ma n t ic, a s fo r mountains, because the planets are there.

Based on the French play of the same name by Jean Poret, La Cage is probably best known to Adelaide audiences as the basis for the 1996 film “The Birdcage”,

starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. A decade earlier however, “La Cage Aux Folles” the musical wowed Broadway and West End audiences.

enjoyable, but I won't mention how many calories. The weather was perfect, and all agreed that it had been an extremely pleasant day. In October we are having a pooled picnic lunch at Ingalalla Falls, (weather permitting - check notice board). We hope to play a few games as well, so this should be a very enjoyable day too. Landara Park (one stop) Winery

I

t was with pleasure that we the Yankalilla Regional News Team accepted an invitation from the owners of Landara Park Winery, Graham & Vivienne Lander, for a full tour with lunch thrown in to see what they have been up to over the last 7 years.

After being given a full tour of the site it became obvious that this is a fully selfsufficient winery with all the necessary plant and equipment to produce and process the grapes from the vine to bottling and labeling the end product.

The first vines were planted in 2000 after Graham and Vivienne Lander purchased the property at Wattle Flat in 1996. The 4 years in between were used to research and develop their ideas and put the concept plans onto paper and eventually into action.

With Wine maker Graeme Little assisting with his expertise and advice, there was some serious sampling of the current wines at their various stages of production. These

included Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and some of the other labels using Grahams facilities. Graeme Little is a former Victorian but due to the quality of the wine being produced at Landara Park we won’t hold that against him!

Graham Lander commented that Landara Park Winery is available for any contract winemaking and bottling. Among the barrels were labels such as Yaccaroo and Minko wines, who were taking advantage of the Landara Park production facilities.

quality end product, the only thing missing is Laverne and Shirley to do the packing!

Min Palace Re-Opens

M

in Palace Restaurant at Normanville reopened after the completion of extensive renovations and extensions to the building, on Tuesday 19th August.

The entire restaurant was refurbished and enlarged to accommodate many more patrons than the previous room allowed. There is now a fully functioning bar and a sparkling new kitchen. The liquor licence has been extended from 70 to 100 persons.

Proprietor, Min Hong Lu is having a big Party Night on Friday October 20th to celebrate the extensions and also to thank the tradespeople, suppliers and customers for their support of Min Palace. YANKALILLA HOCKEY CLUB

he Yankalilla Hockey Club held its presentation night on September 9 th with about 70 players, parents and supporters attending. On a rather chilly night , hockey players and their families made their way to the Cape Jervis Community Club to celebrate the achievements of another season.

The atmosphere of the community centre was warm and inviting , the fire took the chill out of the air, a nice red and decent meal meant that guests were ready for the nights formalities. The evening culminated a moderately successful year for the Club. The Women’s team were defeated in the South Coast Hockey Association Grand Final earlier in the day by Victor Harbor Blue (2 goals to 1) The Men’s team were defeated in the B Grade Semi Final 2 weeks earlier.

The Club had an Under 13 team this year that was again very admirably coached by Vanessa Black. This team built on the foundation laid down last year and they were able to recruit some more new players. They performed very well and were competitive on most occasions but could only manage to win one game for the season. It is hoped that we can keep these new players next year and also put an Under 16 team back into the competition. Club President, Alan Curtis thanked all of the players for their efforts during the year and to the parents of the Under 13’s for their assistance with the team. He also thanked the local businesses that have supported the club during the year, especially with the donation of prizes for our Quiz Night, which raised in excess of $1300.

Spring Garden Festival 2006

he annual Spring Garden Festival will run for five Sundays starting on 15 th October and this year will include gardens in Port Elliot as well as Victor Harbor.

Organised by the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group for the enjoyment of the

community, it showcases a variety of beautiful private gardens, which are open to the public on the five Sundays.

Admission is by gold coin donation and the event is a major fund-raiser for the group.

What is happening at South Shores

read with interest the letter from Bruce Menhennett last month, and thought it may be timely to comment on what is happening at South Shores.

In relation to the colours, we would agree with Bruce that the project would be drab if they were the only colours we were using in the project, but they are not. We appreciate the observation, and can assure readers that South Shores will be a colourful architecturally impressive project incorporating 92 villas. We are currently also undertaking the first stage of landscaping works and we are sure that the project will be seen as a success achieving social context and design accolades.

We are pleased also to advise that we have also appointed the caretaker for the South Shores Village, and will introduce them to the community shortly.

There have been a few incorrect rumours surrounding the development of the South Shores village, which I have heard “on the grapevine”. I am disappointed that no one in the community has even sought to see if these were true but have spread these rumours to the detriment of the community at large and the new successful nature of the region after the several failed attempts at Wirrina.

We can state that the South Shores project is 65% sold, and we are building out the entire project. This project represents about 10% of

The Lady Bay Boardwalk, which will be used by South Shores residents and also placed for the use of the community. This boardwalk is being constructed and paid for by our firm at a cost nearing half a million dollars. Whilst visitors to South Shores and the region could have used the many existing access tracks in the dunes, we feel that we need to play our part in assisting the dunes system by controlling these activities. The rumour again that a “bulldozer” was sent into the dunes is again untrue and as we have heard was originally based from someone that had not even visited the area but made a narrow minded statement. We are constructing the boardwalk in accordance with the planning approvals, and it has been these sorts of untruths that have slowed progress on site. We have also worked with the Kaurna people and have an active relationship with them.

We are installing an improved storm water management system to protect, not only South Shores, but the retirement village, caravan park, and other residential development within local catchments. This again we have done so to benefit the area as long-term stakeholders in ensuring not only our own success, but the success of others, providing a diversity of accommodation options.

I would ask that we all as a community support each other in relation to the unique attributes and the inviting nature that this area of South Australia provides, rather than denigrating and potentially continuing to mis-brand the region with its past failures.

Whilst I am personally busy with a number of projects, I am available to talk to anyone in the community at any time if you would like to know the current initiatives we are undertaking or have a question. We hope to announce a new project in a few months that Board walk will again show Normanville as a relaxed friendly community for visitors from both interstate and abroad.

We are happy to work together to improve our community and our environment.

Whilst they are unable or unwilling to obtain a much smaller loan to give the local community access to digital television?

Development

ach time I drive North or South of Normanville township, I wonder what happened to the concept of establishing residential developments adjacent to existing areas of housing.

I thought that was an accepted policy for the district.

Recent developments: The Links, South Shores, The Vines, Carrickalinga Sands etc do not seem to comply with the policy.

Perhaps the policy has changed since the early 1990’s.

Whatever the case, a drive North or South of Normanville township now engenders as much sadness as joy.

The lessons learnt in hindsight, elsewhere – at Victor Harbor, Aldinga and Christies Beach, for example – do not seem to have been learnt by our local authorities and developers.

It seems we must reinvent the wheel in Yankalilla district, at our own expense.

To my mind, ‘progress’ means enhancing the natural integrity and beauty of an area, by means of careful and orderly development – sustainable development. It also means establishing a limit to growth on the basis of ‘quality, not quantity’.

I do not see either happening in Yankalilla District.

The Links is a case in point.

Where are the indigenous trees and shrubs?

Where is the sensitive treatment of slopes?

Where is the wise insistence on low-impact buildings and natural materials? Where is the determination to create a nourishing and beautiful environment – an environment which complements the inherited land and sea-scapes?

Could it be that developers have allowed integrity - and vision - to be overshadowed by the prospect of short-term gain? Have they genuinely embraced their public responsibilities – their environmental responsibilities?

In the ‘old days’, the idea of sustainability was scarcely mentioned, or considered; and that is no fault of the then developers and Council. But times have changed. We have the knowledge – now - to ‘develop’ in a responsible way.

There is still a wonderful opportunity for Council to maintain the integrity of open space behind Normanville dunes; and further to the east. This, among other things, is what people come to see.

This is why locals are devoted to Yankalilla District. It is still a beautiful area.

As for land already developed: a good first step the first step of many - would be extensive planting of indigenous shrubs and trees (at The Links, Ocean Shores, the Vines etc); and along the road verges. It is amazing how indigenous vegetation can transform a damaged landscape.

‘Progress’ does not have to be ugly, harmful or inappropriate.

he people who have lived in idyllic country and coastal settings for years have happily sacrificed many services and materials that city folk take for granted and traditionally the long term residents have welcomed people seeking a simpler, quieter lifestyle. 20 years ago, when people decided to move to the country they were ridiculed by friends and colleagues, they must be mad to venture away from all the action, public transport, entertainment, employment, choice of education facilities and retail outlets. Those who experienced the lifestyle change were brave yes, but not mad. Today a sea change, or a tree change, is sought by many but, a vast number of them bring the noise, pollution, consumerism and demands to local authorities with them. They don’t know how to slow down, be polite and consider other people the way community minded country folk always have done, Many are arrogant and think they can ride rough shod over the local yokels.

Rockin’ at the Mill A Community Success

O

n Saturday 27th May 2006 three Adelaide rock bands descended on the peaceful town of Second Valley – destination: Leonard’s Mill Hotel. Yes, the natives were restless, but there was a distinct air of excitement and expectation not felt in the region for many a year.

Typically, trade had slowed for the start of the winter season, as tourists at this time of year are few and far between. Proprietors Peter and Julie Barlow challenged their staff to come up with ideas to increase trade and keep the much-loved pub afloat during the winter months.

First cab off the rank was ‘market day’. Several stalls were set up on the beautiful lawned area in front of the Mill and in the glassed bistro area.

The weekend proved to be a success, with patronage almost triple the average for that time of year. Adjacent local businesses also benefited from the visiting market buffs.

However, the following months still loomed as a nervous period for the Barlows and their staff, as the continued operation of Leonard’s Mill was vital to their livelihood.

It was then that bar and waiting staff Phil and Jade put their heads together and proposed a band night. Pete and Julie were initially sceptical, worried that if the punters didn’t come in numbers such a night could be a financial nightmare. Moreover, they didn’t want to upset the neighbours by things getting out of hand.

Phil had played in a few bands over the years and told Pete he would call on a few favours to make the night a little more profitable. Pete and Julie nervously decided to take a punt, and “Rockin’ at The Mill” was born.

As Adelaide original rock band ‘Urban Unrest’ kicked things off people from all parts of the Fleurieu began to turn up. By 9 o’clock the pub was rockin’, and so it was to be for the rest of the night. ‘2 at Large’ chimed in with some acoustic sing-a-longs before ‘Joe Six Pack’ had everyone in the pub (including staff) dancing and singing to

powerful renditions of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s rock classics. The rockin’ continued as ‘Crackpot’ finished off the night with some contemporary grunge, and the punters knew they had been treated to a night of pure entertainment never before seen in Second Valley.

People from 25 to 65 years of age sang and danced their way together till they could sing and dance no more! Accommodation was booked out weeks in advance, and some that missed out used their brains and camped out for the night. Local shops profited from the 150-odd visitors to this beautiful town, both before the event and the following day, with everyone in need of a nourishing feed. One local claimed it was the best night he’d had in his “50-something years on this planet”!

In the following weeks the Barlows were inundated with letters and phone calls of praise and congratulations, and all couldn’t wait until ‘Rockin At The Mill 2’.

What a shame that may not happen.

Although 99.9% of the local community support any event that will bring some much needed trade over the quiet winter months, one or two locals became quite upset because they missed out on a good night’s sleep. Now they have deemed it necessary to attempt to veto any such event in the future. Although Pete and Julie have insisted that these events will only happen every two or three months of the year, some members of the community have taken it upon themselves to attempt to stop Leonard’s Mill from holding any evening events, such as birthday parties, engagements, weddings, etc. If they are successful the pub may as well shut its’ doors.

Leonard’s Mill is a pub. A beautiful, historic pub, with a unique ambience. To see it close would be nothing short of tragic. If one chooses to live across the road from a pub one must expect some noise from time to time. The 27th of May was such a time. There was no trouble, just a bit of noise. The noise of 150 people singing and dancing to some fine rock’n’roll.

The only thing anyone was guilty of was having a damn good time. Let’s hope justice prevails, and the good times continue for years to come.

Leonard’s Mill

am very disappointed to hear that a proposed concert at Leonard’s Mill has been cancelled, not only because I will miss out on some entertainment, but also because of the impact it has on the whole community here. Leonard’s Mill provides employment to several of my friends, who otherwise find it difficult to earn a living in this small rural community. It also attracts clients to other businesses in the area, including the Second Valley shop and Caravan Park, holiday rental houses, petrol stations and food outlets. It is also a venue for the musicians to show their skills. There are not enough local patrons for the Mill to survive through the off tourist season and the concerts provide a boost to the whole of the Second Valley community. It is also the social meeting place for us to gather and discuss issues that affect our area, e.g. tourism, sport, farming etc. To think that only three households can have the power to stop an event that supports, directly and indirectly the whole of Second Valley is both

selfish and wrong, when so much of the Fleurieu Peninsula relies on tourism. Tourists are vital to the financial and social survival of this area, and anything that attracts patrons here is vital to all of us and must be supported.

ith the good news announcement last week of the Rapid Bay Jetty project it is appropriate that the region focuses on what is needed in our electorate from next week’s State Budget to be delivered on Thursday, 21 s t September, some 4 months later than normal.

The creation of a new TAFE Centre to serve the Fleurieu and South Coast is a top priority, the extension of health service provision with a local dialysis capacity is essential.

Electricity supply and upgrades down the Eastern Fleurieu must be driven from Central Government and Cabinet.

Substantial road funding on the major arterial roads needs to be increased to deliver safer and more efficient transport corridors.

few local residents have been issued with a “Form 21 Mining Act 1971 Notice of Entry” form. It seems that there is a possibility of uranium once again being sought in the hills and valleys of Yankalilla/ Myponga. Whether there is a potentially viable uranium site it is unknown. What is known is that the residents who have been served are not happy! This area is known for its farming/wine production as well as being a very popular tourist destination. What was once OK in 1954 does not necessarily make it OK within today’s society. The change of the dynamics of this area between 1954 and today is massive.

This used to be a predominantly rural district some 50 years ago where it was “pack the esky” for a day trip down south. This has very much changed with this district being a very much sought after alternative to the suburbs of Adelaide and where a drive to work

further upgrades of school facilities in many of the regional schools with th e provision of additional maintenance and technology support in the class room.

A host of community needs and increased funding to recreational grant opportunities would enable the region to further develop its character and business opportunities and keep our youth employed locally while giving them the catalyst they need to stay and build their lives in the Fleurieu Region.

Arts need an injection of funds to boost facilities and provide entertainment outlets for the rapidly growing population.

A budget delivering much of the above and more is most necessary for the rapidly growing Fleurieu and would be recognition of the demands of the growing population and infrastructure needs.

Whilst we flippantly throw around the phrase NIMBY (not in my back yard) with anything that may impede on our lifestyle, this one has the potential to affect many back yards.

The details of any major works are certainly not known at this stage, as it is all early days with no definite future plans. What is known is that Marathon Resources Limited wish to enter various properties for the purpose of; “Undertaking mineral exploration which may include mapping, ground geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys such as soil and stream sediment sampling, and follow-up drilling…

Whilst it appears that nothing can be done to stop any exploration, what has become clear is that not enough residents or even perhaps the tourists who come here for the tree/sea change are aware of what is potentially being planned for our district. One conservationist has

referred to Uranium as “the Asbestos of our generation”, if this is so, you would certainly want more information before it goes too much further. Whether the majority of the community is “for or against” any such exploration, we need more information relating to any longterm impacts which may affect this community. We also need to remember there is a potential for some residents to have their homes “acquired” in the process if mining were to be found viable.

NEW RAPID BAY JETTY AND HERITAGE TO BE SAVED

he State Government will spend $3.9m on a newer and safer jetty at Rapid Bay, Premier Mike Rann announced. The new 260m jetty will provide access for recreational fishers and divers and will be parallel to the existing structure that has reached the end of its useful life. The T section of the existing jetty will be fully maintained to protect the fragile environmental system and safety will be ensured by the demolition of about 25m of the structure (from low tide) to restrict all access. Premier Ran n and Infrastructu re Minister Patrick Conlon visited Rapid Bay and said the new jetty was the "perfect mix" for locals, tourists and the wider community. "The new jetty will feature a convenient launching platform for divers and adequate space for fisherman to continue accessing their favourite spots," Premier Rann said.

"We are also committed to protecting the unique plant and marine life of Rapid Bay and consultation with a wide range of environmental groups will continue during the design stage, particularly as it will form part of the new Encounter Marine Park. "The State Government recognises the importance of Rapid Bay as one of the world's top dive

sites for viewing the leafy sea dragon and the rich diversity of flora and fauna supported by the existing jetty. "We are committed to ensuring access to Rapid Bay is maintained particularly given its importance for the South Coast's tourism industry. “I am thrilled to be honouring this election commitment for the Rapid Bay community." Mr Conlon said the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) had been working closely with local groups including Friends of Rapid Bay Jetty, local businesses, divers, recreational fishers, environmental groups and the Yankalilla District Council. "The new jetty will be a concrete and steel structure to reduce the high maintenance costs of the current wooden structure and provide safe access for many years," he said. "Maintenance of the existing jetty has proved impossible due to the materials and design techniques used when it was built in the 1940s.

"Providing the community with a new jetty is more cost effective than demolishing all of the existing one and significantly reduces the risks of environmental damage. "By leaving the existing jetty in place it can continue to provide shade - helping to preserve the unique plant and animal life attracted to the artificially created environment." Final designs of the new jetty are being prepared and are expected to be completed by December 2006 when broader community consultation can be undertaken. Construction of the prefabricated sections of the new jetty is expected to start in Spring 2007 and erected when sea conditions will allow the construction equipment to safely work on site.

Yankalilla Art Group A warm welcome was extended to our September tutor Mardi Martin, a regular and valued visitor to our group. Mardi is both an acrylic painter and water colourist. On this occasion her acrylic expertise came to the fore with a demonstration of a figure in a flower garden. In the second part of the session members worked on a variety of individual subjects with Mardi’s support and encouragement. Also Mardi’s critique at the end of the session proved to be most welcome. It was very pleasing to hear encouraging comments about the work of our youngest member, Amber, called ‘Beach with Boat’ which was described as a ‘delightful’ painting. Art is art at any age…

Those who may have seen our long-standing member Doris, drifting in and out of the Police Station over the week-end can rest assured that we do not have a potential Fine Arts criminal master mind in our midst. Doris mislaid her ‘phone during the art session but was reunited with her property by the kind actions of a local member of our community. An action which was much appreciated. One never knows what will transpire at our art sessions, so why not come along and join in with a whole new world of ‘happenings’…

DARK PASSAGES

ven simple Bessie had a sense of foreboding as she stood at the huge wrought iron gates which were the entrance to “Dark House”, gates through which few entered and less returned.

It was dusk and black crows were in the Cyprus squabbling over meagre pickings and disturbing the bats. Instinctively she clutched her grubby hat to her head lest these frightening creatures should rest in her hair, she knew that bats could forever become tangled in one’s hair.

Bessie was born in the poorhouse to a mother whose only crime was one of destitution, where life was a dreadful existence, one long battle for enough crumbs to salve the nagging pain which was hunger. She had always been referred to as Mary’s halfwit daughter which was of no concern to Bessie nor was it of much concern when her mother died, her only thought was that of an expectation that she would inherit her mother’s daily ration of slops.

Although Bessie’s emotions were few she did hold some fear at being taken from the poorhouse, it was the only home she had ever known and now she had been offered employment at “Dark House’ by an unknown benefactor.

As she shuffled down the long driveway she pondered on the tasks she would have to undertake. Her questions were answered when a slovenly, pimpled young girl of about her own age appeared out of the bushes and with a crooked finger beckoned in her direction and called from a mouth of blackened teeth, “Come along follow me luv”. She was taken via a back entrance down into the bowels of the decrepit building and told to deposit her few belongings in what was no more than a cupboard under the stairs. This dreadful

little hovel was to become Bessie’s private space where she slept and spent any free time. The size was of no interest to her but she did miss congregate living, she was frightened of the quiet and longed for the sound of snores and moans of the other women, sounds of the night to which she had been accustomed for her entire life.

As time passed, one day much the same as the other the two young girls never quite friendly toward one another seemed to coexist in the depths of the old house performing the tasks which no one else would attempt. That is until the day Lottie met her demise.

It seemed she had fallen from the widow’s walk at the highest pitch of the roof and clattered all the way over the varying levels of roofing coming to rest in the Laird’s glasshouse.

Poor little Lottie had no right to be up there although her loss seemed not to worry anyone except Bessie who felt an uneasiness and presentiment of evil.

It was at this time whilst pondering her death that Bessie happened upon Edward who was skulking around the dark passageways. Edward also had been “taken in” in much the same manner as Bessie and Lottie with the understanding that he too would carry out unspeakable tasks thought to be fit only for their kind. He paused and appeared to deliberate on his next move as he beckoned her to follow him upstairs.

Realising that she had no knowledge of Edward she never the less obeyed him having always found that it paid to do what she was told. For poor simple Bessie this was the biggest mistake of her miserable life.

As Edward scuttled down the back stairs into the gloom which was his world, he cackled at the memory of Bessie’s scream of terror as she hurtled through the air crashing onto the cobblestones below. He knew that he would have fun ferreting through her few possessions seeking out some unknown treasures.

As he flung open the door his nostrils were assailed by an all pervading animal stench.

Opening Ceremony - Golf Australia Interstate Teams Matches

n Sunday, September 17th 2006, the cream of Australia's amateur men's golf descended on the southern Fleurieu Peninsula to contest the Men's Interstate Teams Ma tc hes . Te a ms f r om a l l Australian States are participating in this event.

The senior team is competing at McCracken Country Club, Victor Harbor, and the Colts Team are based locally at The Links Lady Bay. Matches commenced on Monday,18th September, with Foursomes in the morning and

Singles in the afternoon.

The teams play a round robin competition with the final matches being contested on Friday 22nd September. The Presentation Ceremony will be held at McCracken on Friday evening.

The event commenced with the official Opening Ceremony at The Links.

THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

es! It is that time of year again when my annual visitors come to my house.

Of course I have my regular freeloaders that appear the same time each morning seeking out their brekky of their favourite wild bird seed.

Since last year, I have installed a dovecot and a bird house to attract the avifauna that frequent this area.

At first I thought the effort was useless but, gradually the spoggies, topknots, doves, rosellas

and wattle birds recognised there was a free feed theirs for the taking each morning.

The spoggies instantly head for the roofed bird house, topknots must have a very effective antennae as the motto for this species must be ‘first in, best dressed’ as they converge en masse for the choicest seeds. Then come the doves but, they can be a tad aggressive. Some hunch their shoulders, draw their heads in and intimidate others to forgo their juicy patch so that they can then move in.

I had a surprise one afternoon. Hanging from the lattice work under the pergola, we have a ceramic baby ‘possum’, with its head turned to one side, so lifelike that one can imagine it is real with limpid brown eyes.

On this particular day, I went outside thinking there was something different about the ‘possum.

Certainly was, instead of one ‘possum there were now two, same size alongside each other, hanging on the trellis. However, there was one big difference, one animal was inanimate and the other was shaking and trembling.

My first reaction was “what do I do now?” – Not being familiar with any of the local wild life rescue organisations, I tried the Parks and Wildlife Department but, they were not rostered at that time, then a frantic search in the yellow pages. After some three or four attempts to contact the relevant authorities, I finally rang our vet who put me onto a local fauna rescue society.

The person was very calm, more than what I was feeling at the time, I was petrified that the ‘possum would die, being so small and defenceless. However, my friendly rescuer expressed the view that the ‘possum had become separated from its mother, best thing I could do was to gently pick up the baby, take it onto the spare block next door and place it on a tree trunk, with mum finding it and they could get together, probably after dark.

I was in such a state one could have imagined it was one of my children.

That night, once it was dark outside, I went out with our strongest torch and shone it up in the branches of this large gum tree where I had set the baby, sure enough the light picked out two sets of eyes, mother had found baby and both doing well. I gave a big sigh of relief.

That covers my daily regulars and now for my annuals, my maggies.

I think I have mentioned that these two families have been around my place for about ten years now and, each year mum and dad give me the pleasure of their company and introduce their latest additions.

It is a trait with the male maggie that he is not into fathering duties much at all. He does do his important bit, and from then on it is the female who has the duties of rearing the young ones.

In the first early days and weeks, dad does come

with the family seeking handouts and to have a drink in the bird bath. Once food has been distributed, dad has first sitting, mum and the youngsters (usually two nestlings) have to bide their time and stand to one side. Trouble is, the babies try to eat at the same time as dad, bad timing. Dad rushes over, pecks the kids until they lay submissive on their backs and foolish are those who get up and try again, dad repeats the process until he has had his fill, then flies off and mum and her charges can then indulge themselves, after which they return to their favourite gum or sheoak tree.

From then on, each morning and night, the family congregates on the front lawn, either mum or dad or both warbling, pecking and peering into the windows to announce they are there for food, hovering in the background are the young ones.

These two families, although not hand fed, do not show any fear or timidity and are used to me standing near and watching them.

During this past twelve months, I have had just glimpses of a few new visitors.

When we first built our house, there was a pair of kookaburras that always settled for a short time in a big willow tree over the road however, when the block was sold so was the tree removed, and these delightful birds only returned this year to a pine tree next door.

Hopefully, they will visit again now they have found a permanent site on their migration trips.

One day when I was pruning my lavender bush right down at the back of the yard, I heard a rustling, and looking around was just in time to see a scaly tail disappearing under the pile of wood. I managed to confirm that it was, in fact a blue tongue lizard, now he has been around since 1995 as well. Needless to say, I do not venture down there too often, harmless though he may be.

We are always hearing and seeing the crows, firstly their raucous cawing and then seeing them circling to find a high position to view from. When you see them up close, they are so beautiful, rich, black, glossy plumage with those vivid blue eyes looking at you.

Finally, although we can hear and see the pink and gray galahs, they are not coming down from their screeching, crowded flock until it is that time of year when the gum trees tempt them with the overloaded branches of flowers, just simply bursting and oozing with nectar.

I am sure that the nectar must have some intoxicating properties as if I watch long enough, they seem to fall out of control from the highest boughs but, just in time they clutch a trailing branch with one claw and swing to and fro.

They should be around soon as we will hear them, rowdy beggars they are!

Until this time next year when I may have some different visitors to my garden and surrounds I can report on.

Yankalilla Area School gets boost from Seeds of Renewal

ankalilla Area School received much needed help from ANZ and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s Seeds of Renewal program recently.

The school was successful in obtaining a grant to assist establishing an edible garden for school and community use.

The garden will provide students with the opportunity to learn about growing and caring for plants as well as supporting cooking classes for students and the community.

School Principal, Rosie Harden, said, “We are very thankful to receive the Seeds grant from ANZ and FRRR. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to complete the garden and benefit our students and the local community.”

ANZ’s Regional Manager for SA Southern & Riverland, Frank Fragnito said: “We are pleased to help the Yankalilla Area School with their

edible garden project. Their work is a terrific example of a rural community working to build for the future.”

“ANZ’s support for Seeds of Renewal represents our commitment to supporting the communities where we live and work.

Walk in during the day at the Children’s Centre and it looks like organised chaos. The hidden reality is different. Workers observe closely then plan experiences over the course of the day to meet developmental needs, as well as develop and extend the children’s learning. It all hinges on relationships. The deep psychological/emotional/spiritual bond a child has with its parents and carers is called “attachment”. Child Care Workers receive the gift of a new child at the centre and extend these primary attachments. The child learns it can trust others. In a place of safety the child gains the courage and affirmation to explore and learn. When a child feels safe and supported, it will reach out to embraces the world. Child care work is in some ways an extension of midwifery. The midwife works with the mother to help the child from womb to world. Child Care Workers invite the child from its place of primary attachment in the immediate family into the wider world.

Dying people remind us of the importance of relationships. The core business of Child Care Professionals is to help us grow and strengthen relationships that will set a child up for life. Would you build a house without foundations? How much more important are the foundations on which we grow the next generation! Why then is the child care sector chronically under-funded and why are its workers underpaid? On Friday 27th October, when you raise your glass in a toast, ponder the fact that the waiter, the bar attendant or the kitchen hand involved in your restaurant meal probably earn more than those caring for your children or grandchildren. Waiters, bar attendants and kitchen hands work hard and deserve to be paid well. I would respectfully argue that appropriate remuneration for Child Care Professionals will keep the excellent workers there, and encourage high quality people to embrace the profession.

Let me finish on a personal note. Our child has been attending YCCC for 2 years. She has grown into an articulate, caring, intelligent, joy-filled little person. When I look at the community of children in that place, I see a tribe of kids equally, but differently, gifted.

Child Care Professionals are helping us grow this beautiful crop. We may pay them peanuts, but I don’t see any monkeys!! All those who work in early childhood education deserve our gratitude, particularly on Friday, 27 October, as we celebrate Child Care Professionals Appreciation Day. After all, they are helping to grow the relationships that will be our legacy.

Fleurieu Tourism Awards 2007

he District Council of Yankalilla is conducting further workshops in October and November 2006 to assist local tourism businesses to make quality submissions to the Fleurieu Tourism Awards 2007 run by Fl e ur ieu Touri sm

Marketing.

The Fleurieu Tourism Awards are a brilliant opportunity for local tourism providers to gain extra recognition, reward and encouragement.

In 2006, entries were received from 42 businesses across the Fleurieu Peninsula with the most actively contested categories being Hosted B&B/Farmstay, Tourism Restaurant/ Café and Festivals & Special Events categories.

The workshops will be run by Vanessa Byers of Myponga, a Yankalilla Councillor, a judge for the 2006 Awards and a successful B & B provider.

The workshop will assist businesses in detail about the following areas:

Fleurieu Peninsula’s brilliant tourist parks revealed

ome of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s best caravan and camping spots – all just a short drive from Adelaide - have been revealed in a brochure unveiled by Fleurieu P e n i n s u l a Tourism today.

The Fleurieu P e n i n s u l a Cara van and Tourist Parks brochure features some of the region’s finest facilities, ranging from traditional beachside parks perfect for family holidays right through to camping spots on rivers and in national and conservation parks.

“Imagine waking up in the morning just a few metres from a spectacular beach or surrounded by pristine bushland brimming with kangaroos and other native animals,” Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Marketing Manager Roz Becker says.

“Surrounded by water, the Fleurieu Peninsula offers all that and more. Not only is it close to Adelaide, but everything’s also in easy reach of shops and services combining the best of both worlds.”

Ms Becker said the choice of accommodation was huge with caravan parks, including some of the best coastal parks in Australia, offering

everything from tent sites through to executive cottages with spas and other luxury cabin accommodation.

“You could spend weeks on the Fleurieu Peninsula and never run out of things to do,” Ms Becker says.

“For families there’s jetty fishing, rides on the coastal Cockle Train and Horse-Drawn Tram to Granite Island, Southern Right Whale and Little Penguin spotting, strawberry picking, adventure playgrounds, horse riding at Normanville, trout fishing and even cable hang-gliding at Old Noarlunga.

“And the adults don’t miss out either. About 60 cellar doors in some of Australia’s most famous wine regions such as McLaren Vale are in the region, along with weekend markets, superb cafes and restaurants, art galleries, walking trails, picnic spots and cruises along the waterways of the Coorong.”

Ms Becker said even adventure lovers were catered for with bushwalking along the Heysen Trail, kayaking, diving trips to the HMAS Hobart, surfing beaches and mountain bike trails.

SELLICKS BEACH MONSTER GARAGE SALE

he most easily accessible community garage sale in the southern Fleurieu is on! Just a stroll from the historic Victory Hotel and a minute off Main South Road the community of Sellicks Beach will hold its very first Community Garage Sale on Sunday 8 October 2006.

Sellicks Beach Community Working Team is a small group from the community working together to help create a sense of community spirit.

This team is a not-for-profit community group.

Janine Power and the community working team of this year’s Sellicks Beach Garage Sale says, ‘Sellicks Garage Sale is looking to shape up to be a shoppers paradise with up to 20 sites booked already! This is certainly shaping up to be an Annual community event with the interest that is being shown.’

There will be loads of goods ranging from pot plants, children’s toys, household furniture, stereos, tools for the handyman, old cabinets, bikes, preloved doors, bricabrac too numerous to mention and so much

more.

The community will hold a breakfast and lunch time BBQ at the Community hall for the hungry bargain hunters to grab a bite to eat while perusing the many local arts and crafts on sale.

The Garage Sale will start at 8.00am.

The local Community Hall at Riviera Street and Sellicks General Store will have maps with site locations of participating garages for the potential bargain hunters.

Sellicks Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Southern Fleurieu, just off main South Road – the perfect location for bargain hunting and while looking for bargains the visitors will be able to explore the beautiful community of Sellicks Beach and its surrounds. Grab lunch at the Community Hall, Sellicks Beach General Store or for something special – the popular Victory Hotel.

Mrs Power says ‘This is a great day out for all to come and enjoy the delightful community of Sellicks Beach with bargains for all – even the ‘bloke in this shed’.

Normanville Sailing Club

W

inter provides opportunities for Club events off the water and the AGM was held at the Yankalilla Hotel on Saturday 3rd June. A good attendance by members ensured that some lively discussions took place. Vern Richter was re-elected Commodore for the upcoming season and Gavin Schubert was elected as the new ViceCommodore.

Some highlights mentioned at the meeting: A doubling of Club membership from 9 - 18 in the past year.

Selling of the old rescue boat and the purchase of a new boat. Many members donated much time and effort into fundraising to allow this to happen.

A presentation was made to Steve Rogers for his amazing organisational work behind the scenes.

Steve Rogers and Gavin Schubert were especially thanked for their efforts in operating the rescue boat, as members agreed that without them no sailing would occur.

Club T Shirts would be produced with ‘new-look’ logos.

Most importantly, the new Sailing Calendar was discussed and it was agreed to start the sailing season on Sunday November 5th and meet most Sundays until April 29th next year. Club championships will be held on the third Sunday of the month and will be followed by the all

important BBQ to facilitate post racing discussion and deliberating.

After len gth y d iscu ssi on s members also decided to change the fee structures for the coming season. The cost of individual membership will be reduced from $50 to $25 per annum and boat owners will now pay $10 each racing day. It is hoped that reducing membership fees will help to attract new members, both sailing and on-sailing ones.

Members believe that the $10 racing fee is not a large amount to cover the cost of launching their boat and having the safety umbrella of a rescue boat present whilst they are out on the water during the 2hours or so of sailing.

With Club memberships gradually growing we look forward to a great sailing season commencing on November 5th. New members and Visitors are always welcome, so if you are at tall interested in taking up sailing, now is the time to contact us. We would be happy to arrange a trial sail. Several classes of boats are raced each Sunday, the main categories being the single hulls and the catamarans and you can try both to see which would suit you best. Members range from beginners to those with many years of experience, so it doesn’t matter how much sailing you’ve done, you’ll still be welcome. We are a friendly group who believe that it is a great sport and we encourage new comers. his month seemed a good opportunity to revisit some practical notes on marketing penned by our previous small business officer, Viv Goodenough. I get asked regularly about marketing and the main thing to remember is it is not all smoke and mirrors but simple common sense. I have to point out though, it only works when you actually do it !

For the small business owner, time and cash flow do not always allow for great marketing strategies, but if you stop and spend a little time on this exercise it is often a case of can I afford not to?

We can all look to large marketing campaigns by big business to see that this is

Before you set off on your campaign, be it large or small, make a check list and answer a few simple questions.

• Have I determined my target market?

• What is my ‘point of difference’? – if there are 4 business in the area all doing or selling the same thing, what makes mine stand out from the crowd?

• How do I measure this difference and use it to position myself against the opposition?

• Is the medium I intend to use, (be that direct mail, email, radio or press advertising), the right choice for my business?

• What can I set as my realistic marketing budget for the year? (It is important to set a budget as an ad hoc approach will lead to ad hoc results).

Your marketing plan should not be a short term fix. For example, if you have surplus stock that you would like to get rid of, a local ad with great discounts may seem like a good idea, but this is not a good, long term marketing strategy. You should look at developing a strategy for the next twelve months with specific targets and processes that allow you to measure your success.

ith an Open Day at the school on the 27th of October, followed by a dance that evening in the gym, a fair in the school grounds on the 28th, and culminating in a dinner that night in the gym, Yankalilla Area School will celebrate fifty years of schooling since its opening on October 5th 1956.

Past students and their families, Principals, teachers and SSOs have been contacted via a huge mail out. Current school families have been contacted via the school newsletter. Because of the numbers involved, the invitation is being sent only to a representative from each family. The committee is requesting in the letter that as many members of the extended family unit be contacted by the recipient of the invitation and that the total numbers from that family be indicated on the RSVP. The committee are also asking that the school be contacted on 85580 888, with information re the addresses of any past families or teachers who have missed out on receiving an invitation. Over a period of fifty years, it is very easy to lose contact.

Council elections - It’s your choice

ith the clo se o f nominations the district must now decide who it wants to take over the reins and steer the district over the next 4 years With 17 nominations for 9 positions, it is shaping up to be a tightly contested race this year. With the sometimes heated discussions relating to the proposed $4m for new council chambers and the closure of Bower Road on this

years agendas it should be an interesting outcome. Could it be that the large number of nominations, especially for the Bungala Ward, is directly linked to the dissatisfaction in the community with the way these important issues have been handled? After all, most people are quite happy to sit back and let elected members do the running of the Council, as long as they are happy with how its being done. When the

public is not happy there always seems to be more people willing to give it a go. If you truly have an opinion relating to issues in this community now is your time to state it, if not then one could assume that the current direction is the one that we the community wish to endorse.

John has represented Hewett Ward on Council since May 2003. TACKLING SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S DRY

I

f South Australia doesn't receive any comprehensive rainfall in coming weeks, the State Government will implement water restrictions from mid-October. "Our River Murray is clearly struggling to cope with its driest winter on record and I want to assure South Australians that we'll take the necessary steps to protect it from over consumption," Premier Mike Rann said. “We already have the benefit of Permanent Water Conservation Measures, which helped reduce Adelaide's consumption by 10 per cent last year. If we are forced to take the next step, restrictions could even include sprinklers only being used on alternate days and for shorter hours. It could also mean greater limitations on filling pools and spas, as well as watering sports grounds.

SA Water is already planning for an information campaign to ensure that South Australians are thoroughly informed of any changes that will occur. And the lack of rainfall is seeing the Murray-Darling Basin enter its six consecutive year of drought and as a result, South Australia was now expected to receive less than its entitlement flow of 1850 gigalitres from interstate down the Murray. It is so dry in the catchment that flows into the river in the past three months have been the lowest ever recorded.

The state government has responded by restricting the water allocations of irrigators to only 80% and will s t ri ctl y ma n a ge w a t er for environmental flows along the river.

And the dry winter is having other dramatic i mpacts i n South Australia's country areas, with the State's grain harvest predicted to be down at least thirty percent, shaving $350 million off the value of the crop. "That's why I have today established a high level Premier's Drought Taskforce to advise on ways to deal with drought c on d i t i on s a ff ec t i n g S ou t h

Australia's farmers. We all remember the 2002 drought, which effectively reduced Gross State Product by $930 million, so the impact of continued low rainfall this season has the potential to severely harm the state's economy. Many areas of the state are in desperate need of immediate spring rains but forecasters are only predicting a 2040% chance of above average spring rainfall. Should the outlook continue to deteriorate, the Premier's Drought Taskforce we're setting up today will come up with strategies to help rural communities in these difficult times.� The Taskforce will be headed by the Chief Executives of the Departments of Primary Industries and Resources SA as well as Water Land and Biodiversity Conservation. Membership will also include senior executives from the Health and Mental Health agencies, the SA Farmers' Federation, the Bureau of Meteorology, the SA Natural Resources Management Council and membership from relevant state government agencies.

The Task Force will initiate a range of support measures, such as establishing a Drought Information Hotline to provide a single point of contact for people in rural communities needing advice and assistance. A series of drought information workshops will be held later this month and in October in high priority regions like the Mid and Upper South East. People in rural communities who attend the workshops will also be given advice about where they can seek mental health counselling as well as financial counselling. People who ring up the hotline seeking mental health advice help will also be directed to where they can get the best advice and help. They'll initially focus on those regions that have not previously experienced such adverse conditions."

CATCHMENT RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS Preventing Bare Areas and Weeds in Horse Paddocks s a follow up to the Healthy Soil, Healthy Horses Session held earlier this year, the Land Management Program, in partnership with Horse SA and Horses Land and Water, will be holding a workshop entitled Preventing Bare Areas and Weeds in Horse Paddocks on Friday November 17th from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Yankalilla. The aims of the workshop will be to guide participants through a process which will enable them to assess their properties in relation to factors such as pasture composition and ground cover, weeds and tracking and to implement strategies for improving pasture, preventing weeds and repairing and preventing tracking. sn’t it great to at last see the return of spring once more. But with it comes an extra cost.

Yes even the inside plants need more attention, watering and removal of the dead leaves etc. Another ‘bloody chore’, so the other day on one of my jaunts I saw a plastic plant all tucked in a pot with coconut fibre packed neatly in and thought this, is the answer to Alan.

But first you better let me explain, over the years people have given me pieces of plants or potted varieties of such. So to remind me of these people I have given them their names.

So again to simplify this problem it may become George upstairs who could be a Boston fern or George downstairs who may be a parlour palm. Or Mavis for that matter, so you see I have an array of plants that need that personal attention and this has gone on for literally years. In fact the one I called Alan that I replaced with the plastic philodendron had been struggling to survive for at least the last 5-6 years. The final crunch came when I listened to some gardening guru stating that all pot plants begin dying when placed outside. So put them outside for a while. If I met this character he’d definitely pronounce me with a brown thumb!

Forgetting about white elephants. A living plant is not a bad gift because it keeps the recipient in memory of them. Once could say the last living link after their gone. So my request for an easy answer rather loses its appeal some what.

Oh! and by the way, I’ve heard some silly buggers even talk to their plants.

elamere have won back to back Premierships. After the minor round Delamere were sitting on top of the ladder, but were defeated by Myponga’s Gold team in the first final. The Myponga Green side defeated Normanville but were soundly beaten by Delamere the second week. Normanville and Second Valley played a ‘friendly’ wooden spoon match, a big thank you to Kevin Sleep for rejuvenating the Second Valley side. The Grand Final score was Delamere 12 sets 42 games defeated Myponga Gold 8 sets 31 games. Nathan Eatts was Delamere’s best player and Shane Mignanelli the best for Myponga. Sportsmanship award’s were presented to Luke Bartlett (junior) Normanville, and Gary Lloyd (Senior) Delamere. Nathan Eatts was presented with the ‘Robert Whittlesea Memorial Trophy’ for player of the finals series. Gary Lloyd accepted the ‘Albert Jones’ Shield on behalf of the Delamere team.

A very successful weekend was held on August 5th and 6th, when the team from K.I. Association visited our area. A great day of sightseeing on the Saturday was preceded by a night of table tennis, food, drink and karaoke.

The challenge match for the ‘Tim Stokes Memorial Shield’ was played on Sunday and unfortunately they proved too strong once again. Many thanks everyone who helped to make this weekend such a success. We have been invited to K.I. next year to try and bring the trophy home

Hookworm Infection

ookworms are parasites which get their name from the hooklike mouthparts they use to attach to the intestinal wall. They are about 3mm long and difficult to see. Despite their small size, they suck large amounts of blood from the tiny vessels in the intestinal wal l. A l ar g e n u mb e r o f hookworms can cause anaemia.

This problem is most common in puppies, but it will occasionally occur in kittens and adult dogs and cats.

If a pregn an t an imal has hookworms, the pregnancy may reactivate larvae. These larvae will enter the female’s circulation and pass to the foetus through the placental flow. Puppies may become infected through the mother’s milk. Infection may also be by the larvae penetrating the skin and then migrating to the bowel where they complete the life cycle.

The most significant problems appear related to intestinal pain and anaemia. Blood loss results from the parasites sucking blood from intestinal capillaries. Some animals

experience significant weight loss, bloody diarrhoea, or failure to grow properly with hookworm infection.

Skin irritation and itching can be one of the common signs of a heavily infested environment. The larvae burrow into the skin and cause the animal a great deal of itching and discomfort. Kennels can sometimes have a problem with hookworms.

Hookworms are diagnosed with a microscopic examination of a small faeces sample. Since there are so many eggs produced on a daily basis, they are rather easily detected. One adult female hookworm is reported to produce as many as 20,000 eggs day! In young animals, large numbers of worms usually must be present before eggs are shed into the faeces. For this reason, faecal examination may be more reliable in adult animals.

There are several very effective drugs that will eradicate hookworms. These are given by injection or orally and have few, if any, side-effects. However, these d ru gs o nly kill th e adult hookworms. Therefore, it is necessary to treat again in 2-4 weeks to kill any newly formed adult worms that were larvae at the

time of the first treatment. A blood transfusion may be necessary in some animal because of the severe anaemia which can be produced.

Adult canine hookworms do not infect humans; however, the larvae can burrow into human skin where it caused itching. In some countries this is called “ground itch”. The worms do not mature into adults.

Direct contact of human skin with moist, hookworm infested soil is required. Fortunately, this does not occur very often if normal hygiene practises are observed. Rarely the canine hookworm will penetrate into deeper tissues and partially mature in the human intestine causing enterocolitis (small and large intestinal inflammation).

Prevention includes worming pups and kittens at 2-3 weeks of age; periodic worming for adult pets; prompt disposal of faeces, especially in yards, playgrounds, and public parks; strict hygiene especially for children. Do not allow children to play in potentially conta min ated envi ron men ts; nursing animals should be treated concurrently with their young, because nursing may reactivate infection in the female.

If it can't rain properly for the poor old farmers it may as well be good living weather. Having been a farmer all my life I certainly feel for them. I was up in the mid and upper north last week, and boy is it dry. Even

if we got rain now most of the crops would be battling to recover, but I suppose that's life.

Don't forget the old saying "drought on the land drought in the sea" and from what I am hearing there isn't too many fish about either. We have had a fairly interesting couple of weeks.

Firstly, our boat Sea Rescue 5 was awarded the Dorothy Follitt memorial trophy for the bestpresented craft for the year. This award was presented at the Sea Rescue annual get together in Adelaide on Saturday the 26th of August. They kept it pretty quiet and it was a real surprise. My congratulations go to the Skipper Steve Marshall and his crew for a job well done through out the year. We had only four incidents this month and I suppose the one that sticks in ones memory the most is the ferro cement yacht that we had to shift out of the Marina. The craft was registered in the Ukraine and had been sailed and motored around from Sydney having engine trouble

along the way. To cut a long story short on the day they wanted to leave the marina, there was a strong wind warning in place and the yacht was having trouble leaving the berth. We were asked to give them some assistance, which we did. The yacht was over a hundred foot long and weighed somewhere between 80 and 100 tonne. It surely tested the Volvo out but it did the job and towed the yacht to open water. The AGM was held for the Adelaide Flotilla and Joan Stanton was re elected as Commodore. Gerry de Jong takes over from Fraser Bell as the new operations captain.

Many of you will know Gerry as he has served in this position before. To Fraser, congratulations on a job well done. The Wirrrina flotilla will be holding their AGM on Friday the 20th October at 1930 hrs at the Yankalilla Fire station. All welcome to attend.

FLEURIEU HORSE AND PONY CLUB INC.

i all, Hope you’re enjoying the spring - a chance to get the rugs off those horses and rid them of their winter coats and a bit more daylight to get those chores done and squeeze in a bit more riding.

On August 27 was a Freshman’s Showjumping Day. This is a fundraising event for the rally coordinators to get a few guest instructors in to give us some fresh outlooks on what we learn. The day was quite successful despite there being several other events on the same day. The weather was great despite that annoying afternoon sprinkle. $215 was made from entries - well on the way to getting us an instructor for a rally shortly.

We also held a raffle on the day, supported by many local donations.

Also thank you to all outside pony club circle who purchased tickets, we raised $236.

uring the first week of October 2006 a survey will be landing in every resident’s letterbox or mailbox from the Yankalilla Council. The purpose of the survey is to gather resident’s attitude and experience of community services in this region. The questions vary from community safety, to accessing government services like education, health and housing; to asking about transport needs.

For the first time the district will have some solid information about how well resident’s needs for community services are being met.

This information will be instrumental in the formulation of future planning for community services. The information gathered will reflect the people who set aside the time to fill in and return the survey. I encourage you to sit down with the members of your household and fill the survey in.

Part three of Kelani’s story

I

t’s the first day here in Melbourne again and Kelani and I spent all day at the hospital. We began by having some x-rays, an ECG (measures pulses and rhythms of the heart), an echocardiogram (like an ultrasound of the heart) and blood and urine tests. Knowing that many including ourselves have been diligent in our prayers, I was curious to know just when I would see the first miracle.

To begin with, Kelani giggled the entire 15 minutes that they squeezed blood out of his little wrist drop by drop. They kept commenting on how good he was so of course I was so proud! At the echocardiogram, the heart still looked unusual to me but different to what it had looked last week when he had one. The lady doing it kept looking at her piece of paper and then back at the screen with a confused expression on her face.

Nothing was said but when we had the appointment with the cardiac surgeon, it became evident that the surgery that would take place on Thursday was different to what we had expected. When I asked why the surgeon said: "Normally the heart grows but in proportion to what is already there, however Kelani has grown some extra cardiac tissue and now has 2 chambers!" (for those who do not know, the normal is 4 and Kelani previously only had 1!)Upon checking, there was no extra cardiac tissue last week! So what did this mean? A surgery that is 6 hours instead of 18 and no need for a surgery from 4-8 years of age and no need for a heart transplant later in life. This will be the last surgery Kelani will need.

I was always a little apprehensive about sending Kelani in for surgery after 4 years old because I thought he would be scared as it’s a really daunting place. Hence I was so happy to hear this. Also the risks

involved in the previous surgery were that of 40% death. With this one, it is 1% and to this day he has never lost anyone to this procedurea very comforting thing for any parent to hear.

Life expectancy has gone from 4045 to 70y+ so he'll get his three score and ten!!! The cardiac surgeon was dumbfounded and could not explain what had happened. In fact I was delayed in seeing him because he was questioning all in the faculty to see if they had ever encountered such a thing which of course they had not.

He would not say it was sent from above but that it was in fact a miracle and to continue doing whatever we had been doing.

Finally, we were told he would never be able to play sport as he would be too breathless. Paul was devastated as his aspirations of a footy player son were shattered!!

Today we learned that after this procedure, the way the blood pumps and the gas exchange occurs, will mean he will be more capable than the average person at exercise/ sport and will require much more activity than normal to become breathless!

So thank you so much! Your prayers have been working. I can not explain to you the appreciation I have for being in a fellowship where people genuinely care for one another this much. You all have spiritually inspired me.

This story gives another meaning to "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart!" Beth McDonald gave me a scripture box with a scripture for each day I was here, a lovely gesture!!! Well this morning I opened up Isaiah 57 v18-19 ‘I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also and restore his comforts unto him and his mourners; I create the fruit of the lips. Peace be unto him to him that is far off and to him that is near, saith the Lord and I will heal him.’

What a way to start the day!

Often things that I believe are genuinely from God can be explained as good luck or "being in the right place at the right time".

These things that have happened to Kelani can be explained in no other way other than miraculous! Praise the Lord!

The Good Guys

I

noticed the sign one day that said: ‘The Good Guys.’ It made me ask, ‘Who are the Good Guys – and what is a ‘good guy’?

The next day, a headline in the Advertiser said: ‘Sir Paul wants to be viewed as good guy.’ It went on to say that former Beatle star, Paul Mcartney, drove 88kms from his house in Sussex estate to assure a friend that he was not a bad man. (Advertiser 12-8-06) We like to think of ourselves as ‘Good Guys.’ We want others to be good guys too.

Kids want parents to be ‘good guys’ - and also their school teachers. It’s nice to work for a boss who’s a real ‘good guy.’

We like politicians to be ‘good guys.’

We look for goodness in others – but it’s not always there. Others look for goodness in us and it’s not always there.

We want to be better than we are but struggle with failure.

Dominated by self interest we give in to the temptations that darken our character. The apostle Paul lamented the fact that the good he wanted to do, he didn’t do and the bad that he wanted to avoid he did. In despair he cried out, ‘O wretched man that I am who will help me out of this dilemma?’ (Romans 7:15, 24) There’s a serious flaw in human nature. The obvious symptoms appear as, assaults, abuse of little children, terrorism, endless wars, dishonesty, robberies, exploitation, etc.

A ‘Good Guy.’

Bad guys - good guys.

We can be better than we have been. Jesus came to this world to make bad guys good guys.

But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.’ 1 Tim 1:1516 At a breakfast, one morning, I sat opposite a heavily tattooed man who’d been in prison. I asked, ‘Do you mind telling why you were in prison?’ He said, ‘For murder.’

Beneath the unsightly tattoos was a man made new. He had repented and asked Jesus to come into his life and make him a good person. He was brilliant evidence of the Bible text which says, ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!’

2 Cor 5:17-18 Jesus said, ‘I didn’t come to call the people who think that they are good, but sinners.’ He added these words, ‘Those who are well don’t need the doctor – only those who are sick.’

None are perfect. ‘All have sinned,’ says the Bible, ‘and fall short of the glory of God.’ Jesus, through his life death and resurrection, can forgive the past and start us off in a new direction, with a new motivation and purpose. He once said to a religious man, ‘You must be born again,’ - pointing out the need and the wherewithal for a dynamic inner change.

Great things can happen to us and through us when we give God the opportunity he needs to realise His purpose in our lives -- making us ‘good guys’ after the perfect model – Jesus Christ.

The question is: Can anyone be a ‘good guy’?

The answer is, ‘Yes.’ There was one who achieved the highest level of goodness. He was perfect in nature, thought and deed and his enterprise was to make others good.

Details of his exemplary life are recorded in the Bible. He freely used the epithet in a way that wasn’t self glory. He said, ‘I am the good Shepherd.’

Jesus epitomised goodness. He told no lies, cheated no one and lived selflessly.

Man’s domain and reward is life in this changed condition not a promise of ascending into heaven which is a concoction of the church.

Zechariah 14:9 states: “The Lord shall be king over all the earth; in that day there shall be one Lord” and as the Lord stated himself in

prayer: “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” . In other words the hope offered man is upon earth for as Daniel states in 2:44, 7:27 “The God of heaven shall set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed” and “And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him”.

The Middle East is yet to experience a “time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation” Dan 12:1 yet out of it a time of peace promised at the birth of the Lord will result bring security, stability and happiness as Jesus Christ brings vast changes as outlined throughout the scriptures.

What happened to the School Chaplain?

T

he 3 schools in our district (Myponga, Rapid Bay and Yankalilla) have been served by a School Chaplain for many years, including Haydn Lush and Mark Pearce. These chaplains have provided pastoral support for the students, their families and the staff during this time, but Bronwyn Lang will be the last to be known as the School Chaplain.

During the 2nd Term, the School Chaplain took some of the Rapid Bay students to a hip-hop workshop at Her Majesty’s Theatre. The Chaplain nominated a senior student for a Life FM “Chaps Award” (for a student who is a positive role model). This was presented at the Yankalilla Area School and the Myponga Uniting Church laid on an amazing spread of food for the school’s staff.

The Chaplain has also been

supporting the Wakakirri story dance competition as a backstage person, planting trees with the Myponga 6/7s and been with the R-5 Rapid Bay students at Victor Harbour for their swimming lessons. On Thursdays and Fridays the Chaplain has been at Yankalilla serving breakfast, “cooked” by church volunteers.

At the same time the Chaplain has been providing pastoral support whenever it is needed at the 3 schools. All of this support is funded by local churches, not in the hope of getting more members, but to give children, staff and families the opportunity to experience love without any strings attached. While giving this support, the Chaplain has always been barred from instigating discussions about why they (and the churches) are eager to share

unconditional love with students, staff and families (i.e. they are barred from pushing their faith onto the students and staff).

However, the Department of Education and Children’s Services has decided that churches can no longer provide Chaplains to public schools. Rather, to reflect the separation of church and state, that Australia is not a religious society and in the spirit of political correctness, churches can provide not a Chaplain but a Christian Pastoral Support Worker. This policy change also provides the opportunity for any religious group to provide Pastoral Support Workers; for example, a group of Buddhists could provide a Buddhist Pastoral Support Worker.

This clumsy title is somewhat ironic as in an effort to remove the

Christian centric chaplain label; the Christian Pastoral Support Worker is now free to use the term Christian whenever they introduce themselves. And as the Christian Pastoral Support Worker is not barred from answering questions about Christianity, Bronwyn Lang (now the Christian Pastoral Support Worker) may be answering more questions about Christianity than she has up to now.

We look forward to the Christian Pastoral Support Worker providing the same care and support to our 3 schools as she did as their chaplain. Long may the children, staff and families of these schools experience love without any strings attached.

R

osalie and I have been back from our holidays for two weeks. From our flat at Port Elliot, perched above the beach and the sea, we could look out with the knowledge that there was nothing between our balcony and the Antarctic. Our bedroom faced the sea and, with open windows, we could hear the sound of the waves for 24 hours a day. Sometimes the sound was just a gentle ‘swhisssh’ as the waves reached the shore, at other times their pounding beat into our flat. For me, at least, the waves felt as though they were washing over me, at times through me, calming me and bringing me peace.

The first days at Port Elliot were sheer bliss. Rosalie was able to relax from her labours at St. John’s Nursing Home and I could enjoy my first real break since I was diagnosed with cancer. Our normal

holidays there involve going up to Adelaide to see family and tripping around almost daily to this place or that. This year we made the resolve that we would do little travelling. And so it was. We were given the great gift of peace and restoration in this place. It was a gift of grace. It was a gift that cost us nothing but was given by the grace of God. We accepted it in gratitude and with open hands.

I have to say that it has taken me a long time to receive graciously. I have felt uncomfortable when I have been given something. Giving has always been a great joy. But receiving—well that was altogether different.

The gifts we received on our holidays were freely given. They were given in love by God’s grace. Now this is so much different from the giving at Christmas. The saint of the greatest season for spending in our materialistic society, Santa Claus, doesn’t give for nothing. The Santas of our shopping malls, and I’m sure many parents, still ask the question, ‘Have you been a good child?’ What’s the point of this?

We know the child is going to get its gift anyway. But the child grows up seeing the gift as a result of being a good child. Good behaviour brings a reward. It is this attitude that raises the question of, ‘What’s in it for

me?’ that pervades our society.

It is this attitude that makes it so hard to grasp the central Christian theme of grace.

Even people who have been churchgoers all their life have trouble understanding it.

The idea of grace is that something is given for absolutely nothing! God loves us, and we don’t have to do a single thing to deserve what he gives. Years and years of doing good deeds can’t earn God’s love, but if we accept his love with joy and delight, we have no idea of what might happen in our lives.

The ‘good’, respectable, religious people of Jesus’ time simply didn’t get it, either. But those who were at the fringes of society; prostitutes, women and children, lepers, the mentally ill, the disabled, welcomed the gift of Jesus’ love and acceptance. They came away full of joy and with changed lives.

Only a power as big as God can give such an amount of love just because he likes to.

We have to recognise it and accept it as his wonderful free gift.

What does South Coast Carer Support do? Well they offer groups, activities, retreats and support to anyone who is caring for a parent, partner, child or friend who has a disability, is frail aged, or has a chronic mental or physical illness. Often these Carers are in that position 24 hours a day 7 days a week with few breaks and few laughs. All funds raised will go towards providing retreats for Carers, who live on the Southern Fleurieu, an annual few days break away from their Caring role.

Inman Valley Celebrates.

n enthusiastic crowd filled the Inman Valley Uniting Church on Sunday 10th September for its 135th anniversary.

Adrian Lush, a long standing member of the congregation and district historian, welcomed those present and introduced the preacher John Hutchinson, a third generation lay preacher at Inman Valley.

Ralph Hurrell, a former organist, returned to enthral with music from the electronic organ both at the celebration service and the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon.

Rev Andrew McDonough, superintendent of Westcare Baptist Mission in Adelaide enraptured children - and adults, with his brilliant visual presentation of Cecil, the lost sheep.

Margaret Lush, accompanied by Cynthia Hawke, sang 'How Great Thou Art.' John Hutchinson's sermon, entitled 'The Gospel according to Car Parts,' was novel in its presentation and application - the main text being the words of Jesus 'I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the father except by me.'

A pooled lunch followed with many folk chatting in the spring sunshine as well as in the church hall where memorabilia was displayed.

Humorous reminiscences were shared at the PSA conducted by Brenton Lush- more than one about preachers who had lost their false teeth whilst preaching.

Ralph Hurrel played the 'Lost Chord' on the organ and Libby Druce sang 'Be Thou my Vision.'

A short film from 35 years back featured Sunday School events.

Mr Doug Hurrell, almost 95, shared some of his earliest memories.

Appreciation was expressed to Doris Lush and her team who worked hard to make the day a great success.

Mini Colts Carnival

T

he carnival was played on Sunday 20th August at Encounter Bay oval.

Yankalilla won every game they played, then went into the Grand Final against Langhorne Creek. At fulltime they were tied at 42 a piece and then had to play five minutes each end to decide the winner.

At the final siren Langhorne Creek had won by 2 points. The boys played really well throughout the day. A great day was had by all. Thanks to Chris Bartlett (coach) and Cheryl and Steve Fox for the use of the BBQ, CFS for the loan of the tent and everyone else who helped out on the day.

Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support & Resource Group Inc.

ichael Pengilly MP, Member for Finniss, officially launched the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group’s second calendar “Visions of the Fleurieu” on Friday 15th September. The ceremony, held at the Group’s Drop-in Centre in Seaview Road, Victor Harbor, was attended by 35 invited guests including Mayor Deane Michelmore, Mayor Kym McHugh, various Councillors, major sponsors of the calendar, business representatives and members of the Cancer Support group.

President, Ann Simpson, thanked Phil and Deidre Thompson of Victor Print & Design, and members Sue Johnson and Neil Wilkinson, for all their hard work in creating the 2007 calendar which will be a major fund-raiser for the group. Neil

Wilkinson explained how last year’s calendar was a sell-out and ended up in at least 16 overseas countries as well as all over Australia. Micheal Pengilly congratulated the group on showcasing the beautiful Southern Fleurieu Peninsula to the world and encouraged all Councils to promote the calendar in their areas. All sponsors and participating businesses were thanked for their generosity and support.

Silver Success at the Japan Karate Association’s 10th World Shoto Cup

A

delaide teenager, Sam Schofield exceeded expectations when he took out second place in the Japan Karate Association’s (JKA) Junior Karate World Championships, held in Sydney from 14th to 20th August 2006 The JKA 10th World Shoto Cup, known as the Funakoshi Ginchin Cup, named after the founder of Shotokan Karate, is one of the events celebrating the 2006 Australia-Japan Year of Sam Schofield and Yui Ozawa competing in Team Kata at the SA State Titles.

Exchange, commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the 1976 Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan.

Competing in the Junior Colts (16-18 years) Kumite (fighting) event, Scholfield took on opponents from around the world making his way into the final where he lost to a Japanese opponent. In all there were 64 competitors, from over 40 countries in Schofield’s event.

Scholfield travelled to Sydney along with four other junior competitors from South Australia as well as a one senior member and a large continent of family, officials and supporters of the team.

Adelaide Metro Dojo (Brighton) team members, Schofield, younger sister Charlotte Rugless, Yui Ozawa and Guy Richardson have supplemented the regular twice weekly training sessions with extra nightly and Sunday morning sessions under the guidance of Adelaide Metro Dojo Instructor, Dion Risborg, in readiness for this event.

The extra training paid off with all the competitors performing well against their highly skilled international opponents.

Some members of the Yankalilla Karate Club also went to Sydney as volunteers and spectators at the Shoto Cup and to offer their support to the South Australian team in their efforts. They returned with a new sense of enthusiasm and looking forward to the South Australian State

JKA SA State Titles

he Japan Karate Association of South Australia held the 9th Annual State Titles on Sunday 24th September. Competitors from clubs across South Australia attended this event which was held at Immanuel College, Novar Gardens.

The Yankalilla Club took part in the competition with twelve members gaining a swag of medals in Kumite (fighting), Kata (set patterns of fighting techniques) and Team Kata (three people do katas in unison).

Yankalilla gained second place with 29 points behind Adelaide Metro (37) points and ahead of Highbury with 18 points.

The competition was Yankalilla Club’s fourth tournament since it was formed in February 2005. They placed second in the 2005 State Titles, were overall winners in the 2006 Central Region Titles held at Peterborough and were second in the medal count at the 2006 National Titles held in Adelaide this year.

Yankalilla Club under the guidance of Bruce “Strop” Arnold and Paul Jefls has about thirty members and train at the Yankalilla Show Hall on Monday and Thursday nights from 6pm. If you are interested in joining please come along and have a go.

Gain new skills and friends as a volunteer ambo

S

A Ambulance Service at Yankalilla is encouraging more local people to be trained to help as volunteer ambulance officers and to enjoy learning new skills and making new friends as they become part of the team.

More people are needed now to help fill the 24-hour ambulance roster for the local community, especially those with time to help during weekdays.

Sylvia Reeves, 58, became a volunteer ambulance officer at Yankalilla seven years ago to give something back to the community. She enjoys meeting new people and helping others.

“I enjoy the camaraderie and being part of the team,” she said. “I feel needed in my community and I am very happy to share my skills and time for the benefit of others.”

Megan Prideaux, 29, feels similarly. “I wanted to make a contribution to my local community and learn new skills for use throughout my whole life. I enjoy developing new skills, meeting new people and making life-long friends.

MARINE PARKS BILL RELEASED FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

T

he Rann government has released a draft bill for public comment aimed at ensuring greater protection for the states valuable marine environment through the creation of 19 marine parks across state waters.

Environment and Conservation Minister, Gail Gago said the draft Marine Park Bill 2006 proposed to establish the 19 parks by 2010 in line with the state government Living Coast Strategy and target under South Australia Strategic Plan. “This draft bill is a significant m i l e s t o n e ," Minister Gago said. “Our waters boast some of the most ecologically diverse cool waters in the world with over 90 per cent of our marine species only found in Southern Australia.

“Collectively, these parks will work: to provide protection to the states marine habitat, much like the on-land conservation park system. “The legislation

provides an increased level of protection, while ensuring our waters continue to be able to support essential regional industries, such as fishing, aquaculture and tourism," Minister Gago said.

"We want to not only better protect our marine waters, but also offer certainty for groups, such as fishers and tourism operators who make such a valuable contribution to our economy.

"Importantly, the 19 marine parks will be zoned for multiple-use in order to protect marine and estuarine ecosystems, while also providing for the continued ecologically sustainable use of suitable areas," Minister Gago said. "This means that most activities, such as recreational and commercial fishing, tourism operations and diving to name a few, will sti11 be allowed within marine park. "However, in order to protect significant habitats, species and ec ol o gi ca l or cu lt ur al

features, there'll be particular Zones or periods of time when some activities will not be permitted," Minister Gago said. "The draft bill we are releasing today will be available for public comment and consultation until October 13 this year. "There’s already been extensive public consultation following the release in March last year of the draft zoning plan for the first of the parks, the Encounter Marine Park, covering a 2400sq kilometre stretch of water and coastline between Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. "We were able to use the Encounter draft zoning plan as a pilot for the methodology of establishing the other 18 marine parks covered in the legislation we' re releasing for public comment today.

“Feedback from the public submission between March and June last year indicated a clear need for certainty through legislation for the dedication, zoning and

management of the marine parks. “This draft bill provides a legislated commitment to address any commercial fishing and aquaculture effort displaced through the establishment of the marine park. “The Department of Environment and Heritage will be undertaking significant consultation with regional and metropolitan areas on both the role of the marine parks and the draft legislation,” Minister Gago said.
