ug was everyone’s best mate. Always willing to lend a hand, no matter how big the job. He had a love for sports, footy, basketball, surfing, fishing and hunting and enjoyed life to the fullest.

He was a true gentleman, so patient and kind. He was quiet and shy, yet you would never have known that if you saw him on the dance floor. We always knew when he had been around by the trail of empty ice coffee cartons and pizza shape boxes.

Bug, our lives were better because you were in them. You will have a place in our hearts

forever and will always be our dancing partner, best mate and Uncle Bug to our kids.

A silent nod back to a true friend, sadly missed and never forgotten Rest in Peace Mate from all the gang at Freddo’s ug, so sad to see you go, we will miss ya champ! You have left us with many great memories and you will forever be in our hearts and will never be forgotten, our thoughts are with Vic, Sue and Elaine.

he Harding, Champion and Stringer families would like to sincerely thank all those people who were in any way involved in the effort to save Sam, Hayden and Daniel following their tragic car accident on 16th September.

We understand that there were numerous volunteer and professional emergency service personnel at the scene. We cannot hope to give all of you the personal thanks that you deserve.

It is not until any of us find ourselves on the receiving end of such dedicated care that we fully realise the personal contribution that emergency service volunteers make to supporting others in the

local community and beyond.

This personal contribution goes far beyond the response at an accident scene and involves many hours of training to ensure they are as efficient and effective as they are. Our families would also like to publicly acknowledge the way the community supported us in the days following the accident via messages, phone calls, prayers and other caring gestures.

We have been overwhelmed by the volume of good will extended to us and again would like to say ‘thank you’ to everyone of you.

H

i everyone!

The Yankalilla Show was a big success again this year, even though it was on the AFL Grand Final day. A few less people didn’t make it any less enjoyable and the weather was great.

Min Palace re-opened after extensive renovations and Min and Chin held a party to celebrate during October and invited their supporters, family and friends. It was a great night, enjoyed by all.

The new Yankalilla Soccer Club is gaining momentum with the formation of a steering committee. If you are ‘into’ soccer, then you might want to get involved. See the article on page 5 for details.

The Uranium debate continues with a planned meeting at the Sporting Club on the 29th November at 7pm. Again, if you want to be in the loop, get along and find out what is going on with this major issue.

Second Valley Store Sold

T

he Second Valley Jetty Store will be changing ownership on the 10th November. Kev and Jan Sleep, who have operated the business for the last 9 years have sold the shop to the operators of the Second Valley Caravan Park. They will be moving to Yankalilla to commence their retirement. Kev & Jan thank everyone for their custom and friendship over the years and will no doubt keep in touch as they are staying in the district.

Soccer Update

T

o avoid any confusion within the community the Yankalilla Dragons Football Club is now the Yankalilla Dragons SOCCER Club. The soccer club is moving forward with a steering committee working towards our first AGM and affiliation.

On our first training back from holidays, we were greeted by old and new faces, many thanks to the parents/senior players that stayed to help Richard and Joseph with training, skills and drills. Your support is very appreciated. Everyone was very enthusiastic and their skills work was displayed in the short game played at the end of the session.

business meeting was the order of the day as we are finishing off all the details for our 70th birthday on the 1st of November. The State President will be with us and it is hoped that many former members will be with us too. We are to visit our link branch Clapham on the 12th of December. The Table Day subject for this year is as the quote" I still call Australia home". Our flower competition was won by Glenda Oats. The next meeting will be our birthday. The classic car rally will be held on the 17th November when we will assist the catering.

Second Valley Progress Association

T

he Second Valley Progress Association thanks the Yankalilla Area School students who recently constructed a new all weather shelter in the Second Valley Playground. Thanks also to Darryl Schintler (Yankalilla council) for engaging the school in this local project.

The shelter, completed in September, is being well used by locals residents and visitors in conjunction with the picnic table and chairs under the shelter and recycled plastic seats provided by the Progress Association earlier this year. The Progress Association meets every 2 months, and welcomes new members. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday Nov 11th. The number of farmers markets in the United States has grown dramatically, increasing 111% from 1994 to 2004. According to the 2004 National Farmers Market Directory, there are over 3,700 farmers markets operating in the United States. This growth clearly indicates that farmers markets are meeting the needs of a growing number of farmers with small- to medium-size operations.

With rising fuel prices any market that encourages its community to buy and eat locally is making a significant contribution to the environment through reduced fuel costs.

Farewell to Pastor Peter and Faith Moore

F

leurieu Assembly of God will hold a Community Tea on Sunday 26th November at 5.00pm in their church hall, 135 Main South Road, Yankalilla, to farewell Pastor Peter and Faith Moore who retired on October 29th. Everyone welcome, but please bring a plate/ dish of food to share.

Pastor Peter has been the longest serving minister in the community, having been Pastor at the Fleurieu Assembly of God for 15 years. He pioneered the church in May 1991, commencing as a small group, which met in the tearooms (which later became Baytree Strawberry Farm) before commencing Sunday morning services in the R.S.L hall.

In 1999 Ps Peter was instrumental in the Fleurieu Assembly of God

purchasing their own building in Yankalilla.

Pastor Peter and Faith will be leaving the area and moving to a Lifestyle Village in Seaford.

Since Faith moved to Normanville on her marriage to Ps Peter almost 2 years ago, she has become a very familiar face at Yankalilla Area School, firstly as a volunteer then as a TRT. Faith is also on hand helping at the breakfast club with Bronwyn Lang.

Both Pastor Peter and Faith will be greatly missed.

We pray for a long and happy retirement for them, although we know that God is already opening news doors of ministry - much to their delight!

essica Saffin (Pharmacy Assistant with Jelfs Group and Darren Goodsell (Apprentice mechanic at Inman Valley Garage) were married on Saturday 14th October 2006 in front of 100 family and friends. They were married at the Lady Bay Lookout, Lady Bay followed by a cocktail style reception at the Dunes Restaurant Links Lady Bay. Jessica & Darren chose Lady Bay as their location for the ceremony as is was where they met and also where Darren proposed.

Jessica and Darryn are honeymooning in Queensland for 3 weeks.

Darryn is the son of Freddy Goodsell of Normanville and Roger Goodsell of Yankalilla.

Jessica is the daughter of Ann and Stephen Saffin of Warradale.

hile many locals were enjoying this years show, a celebration was being held for a couple of know locals, Ric Taylor and Vanita Johns celebrated their wedding day, they shared their vows amongst 75 friends and family in a beautiful garden ceremony at McLarens on The Lake which was then followed by a cocktail reception. Vanita was assisted by her long time friend Lisa Wagner of Adelaide and was walked down the aisle by her eldest son Damien, Ric’s best man was his brother Steve Taylor. It was a perfect day for a perfect couple, Ric and Vanita Taylor have since been enjoying a months holiday travelling and will remain living in Normanville on their return.

After catching up with friends and colleagues, and perusing the many auction items available for purchase, ‘masked’ guests were seated at tables in the Coachroom that was filled with candle light and many decorations.

very successful 124 Yankalilla Show was held on Saturday 30th October with perfect weather and a good crowd enjoying the day.

Organisers were particularly pleased with the high standard of indoor and outdoor exhibits with the photography section receiving 50% more entries than in 2005. Dean Brown former

State Premier & Member for Finniss opened the show. The crowd was entertained by Hard Yacca band with shearing, karate, dancing girls & wood slabbing displays along with sheep, cattle, yard dogs and many static displays and traders.

Children were kept busy with the climbing rock wall, sideshows, show bags, face

painting, balloon animals and hands on animal displays. Local wineries showcased their produce and some of the regions community groups catered for the day. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped out the week before the show and on the day and clean up day on the Sunday. Your help was

greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors for their support. Our AGM will be held on November the 20th at 7.30pm at the Yankalilla Show grounds supper room. All welcome.

Local Boys Help Make A Stand Against Poverty

wo locally grown talents Rhys and Wade Nixon, who make up half of the recently formed band “Informal”, helped make a stand against poverty with a free concert held at Centro Colonnades in Noarlunga on Saturday 20th October. “Informal” is made up of Jason Ellbourn (Lead Singer/ guitarist), Josh Leibelt (bass/ backing vocals), Wade Nixon (drums) and Rhys Nixon (lead guitar). The band formed earlier this year after Rhys transferred to Seaford 6-12 school to continue his music studies and was joined by Wade who recently completed his certificate 2 in music also at Seaford 6-12. All of the guys are currently studying music and Rhys and Josh have auditions coming up soon for entry to TAFE to carry on with their studies, Jason is hoping to go on to University at the completion of year 12. All of the

guys willingly took part in this free concert which was organised and supported by the employees and volunteers of Mission Australia’s Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre to help raise awareness of this global issue. The other southern bands that performed on the day were, Black Night, The Kicks, Finding Grace and Hair on Fire.

Informal produced a set mixed with some original material along with some well know covers to get the crowd on their feet. They will be playing again at the Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre on Friday 3rd November. The cost of entry is $5 at the door. The Reynella Enterprise and Youth Centre has open mike nights every 1st & 3rd Friday of the month and have proven to be a great place where bands from the southern suburbs can cut their teeth in front of a live audience. Party Night at the ‘new’ Min Palace

he team at the Yankalilla Regional News were honoured with an invitation to help celebrate the official re-opening of Min Palace as guests of Min and Chin Hong Lu on Friday 20th October. We were among approximately 100 guests in total with the crowd being made up of builders, electricians, plumbers, councillors, local identities and Min & Chin’s family and friends. With thanks being given to all who helped with the renovation process along the way. Min & Chin put on a sumptuous buffet style meal with tables overflowing with tempting dishes followed by a beautiful sponge cake specially made for the occasion. Brian Spilsbury gave a wonderful speech outlining how far Min has come since first arriving in Australia in 1992 and has since brought out members of his extended family to Australia. Brian also commented how Min was determined to keep the palm tree out the front, and the lengths they went to, to achieve this. As you can see by the photos a great night was had by all, well done to Min & Chin, may you have many more years of success.

Yankalilla Bakery expands with new owners

I

ts been a long time coming but on September 19th the stage 1 of the Yankalilla Bakery refit was opened for business.

Within three days the old Bakery Shop and Café were transformed into one shop, the new Yankalilla Bakery. With the help of B&C Symonds Builders, A Cole Electrical, M Oliver Plumbing, O’Callaghan Electrical, SW Engineering, Dickson’s Shop Fitters and Bakery staff, the impossible was achieved in three long days. We thank these businesses and the staff for their help and support.

At last a shop to match the quality of the product produced within.

Walls disappeared, old display cabinets and drink fridges made way for the latest in refrigerated drinks displays with room for a greater range of products. New cake display units were introduced to assist with quality

products at correct temperatures for public consumption.

A sandwich bar has been added, to provide sandwiches and rolls made to your description in front of you. This provides even more options for the family and while mentioning family you now have the choice of fresh family quiches, family steak pies, pasty slices and fruit pies so mum can have the night off.

The latest San Marino coffee machine now provides fresh Monjava Coffee to enjoy at the renovated café. No longer do you need to grab and run, you can sit and enjoy a coffee with your meal in our café or on the red gum table and seats in our pergola area. Over the next few weeks you will be seeing further changes as we receive our new pie warmer, daily and weekly specials will feature products and meal deals. As an example on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

2007 LEAFY SEA DRAGON FESTIVAL

It feels that the community really gets what it’s all about and is very much behind us. Thank you to so many of you fo r yo u r gen ero us an d constructive contributions.

The festival is now incorporated under the Yankalilla District Communit y Cultural A rts Network Inc. as our application

was accepted at its AGM on 11th October.

Its objectives and functions are completely in line with the purposes of the festival, enabling us to be a discrete group under its umbrella as is the Pageant Committee.

Other community groups connected with the arts are likely to follow suit.

The Festival Planning Group consists of Ruth Davis (Chair), Lorraine McLoughlin (Artistic

Director and secretary), Deb Sweetman (Treasurer), Rosie Harden, Erika Inhofer, Jacqui Salkeld and Heather Teakle with Carol Seagren assisting with sponsorship.

MOSAIC WORKSHOP AT INMAN VALLEY-OH WHAT A WEEK!

I

t was fun, it was empowering… those who’d never been creative before found they could be, the arty ones found they could expand horizons and enjoy it too and learn lots. We all had a go and we were all successful. Some did some incredible work The reason?

Jane Smeets is an outstanding teacher and her offsider, Nancy from California, was equally encouraging and inspiring. It was a fri en dl y and unthre at en i n g environment as we had an outpouring of creativity at beautiful Corinium Roman Villa where Sue and Paul Elliot were great hosts.

The result?

All participants have produced an outside wall plaque 60 cms X 60 cms and Julie-Anne Schubert is going to organise an exhibition of

them at the next festival.

Meanwhile our friends and rellies will be required to admire our incredible skill and artistry.

The future?

We hope to get a grant to enable Jane and Nancy to return in January to lead community workshops to put mosaic on seats and local features and create a community art work to be unveiled at the festival itself.

So you missed out?

Decide now to volunteer to be part of community mosaic works in January and learn on the job. It’s enormous fun, and you’ll have a great time being involved with other locals so that the district never looks the same again. If you have a community feature which needs decorating, make that a suggested site. Bring along friends.

T

he Parawa Progress Association conducted a ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ on Sunday 24th September. The format of the tour was that competing cars, (comprising driver, navigator and passengers), were given a series of cryptic c l ue s t ha t , if c o r r e c tl y interpreted, would lead them around the back roads of the district, collecting tokens on the way. The ‘tour’ (which was not a race, rather a test of skill and orienteering) started and finished at the Parawa Hall.

No one got lost though there were a few unplanned detours and delays! The event ended with a barbecue and general social gathering back at the Hall.

Here competitors and visitors were able to see the first stage of

the main hall renovations (new ceiling and emergency exit lights, as well as an end wall) – favourable comments were made and further improvements are being considered.

This will almost certainly involve the management committee looking at fund-raising as well as some working bees (you have been warned!)

The competition was decided by collection of the correct ten tokens, travelling nearest to the exact distance and a predetermined time taken to complete the course – local knowledge was not necessarily an advantage!

The winning team was the Ron Larkin team, comprising Ron Larkin (driver), Debbie Orken (navigator) and passengers Steve and Lindy Taylor. Runners-up were Graeme and Trevor Golding Article submitted by Nigel Brand, secretary/treasurer, on behalf of the Parawa Progress Association.

here will always come a time when a business operator needs to move on due to a changing focus in life or business, age or health. A real effort is now being put towards planning to maximize the returns from this change of direction, when much of the “locked-in” value of the business is so often lost. What is called “succession planning” relates to the ongoing future of the business and what plans you have for your business when you are ready to retire, sell, close or hand the business over to another family member.

his months local identities are Peta and Stephen of Jetty the food store (look for the blue building opposite the pub in the main street of Normanville).

The Story: Starting “Jetty” is about a lifestyle change for Peta and Stephen. Peta and her daughter Paris have moved from Adelaide and Stephen is back in South Australia from Sydney. Peta's previous

career was in human resources and industrial relations management in hospitality, retail, aged care and emergency services sectors. Stephen's is in the hospitality, wine and food produce sectors. Both share a passion for life's pleasures, including food, and have desired a place to live where they feel centred and inspired.

The Service: 'Coastal food hunted and gathered for you' is Jetty's mission and the

store is all about providing a diverse food environment. Peta and Stephen have been encouraged by the local support of the food store as it evolves into a 'treasure hunt for adults'.

The Future: At the turn of the century this corner building was Normanville's General Store and a meeting place for locals. Jetty is reinstating this for both the locals and tourists by offering interesting local produce fresh or cooked. Peta and Stephen

believe in product knowledge and friendly service, while investing in the store's infrastructure.

Chance for Fleurieu Peninsula tourism businesses to shine

ominations are open for the 9th annual Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Awards.

The awards, sponsored by the City of Onkaparinga and Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism, celebrate the region’s brightest and best tourism operators in 18 categories ranging from best tourism attraction through to hosted B&Bs and caravan parks.

“The Fleurieu Peninsula has some of the best tourism product in Australia and these awards present a real opportunity for local tourism operators to shine,” Regional Marketing Manager Roz Becker says.

“Businesses that win can go on to promote their products as award winners – a crucial advantage in today’s highly competitive marketing environment.”

Last year, Mount Bold Estate won the Self-catering Accommodation category and owner Lyn Rogers said she was elated by the win.

“Winning this award has enabled us to incorporate this recognition in all aspects of our marketing. Our guests appreciate the confirmation of high calibre accommodation,” she said.

Ms Rogers said the awards process had taught her a lot about her business and she was hopeful of winning the same category at the

South Australian Tourism Awards in November.

IT’S OFFICIAL - FIRE DANGER SEASON WILL TEST US!

mergency Services Minister Carmel Zollo says the past week should serve as a graphic reminder of what we can expect over the next few months. October 15, is the official start to the fire danger season right around South Australia, which is 4 to 6 weeks earlier than usual. From that date if you want to light a fire in the open you will need to get a permit. "We are taking unprecedented steps this summer and the past week has shown our actions aren't without good reason," says the Minister. "The fire danger season isn't even officially underway and this past week alone we've had more than 120 fires around the state - 7 believed to be deliberately lit. "We are on target for tinderbox conditions and I urge people to be aware of the danger and the steps they can take to lessen the risk." The Department of Environment and Heritage is also bringing the fire restrictions forward in its national parks and reserves. Restrictions will vary from reserve to reserve and will range from bans on the use of wood fires or solid fuels and in some areas, through to total bans on all types of fire, including gas fires. “Our fire fighters - CFS, MFS, Forestry SA and NP&W - and the police are bracing themselves for a season that could be one of the worst for quite some years,” says the Minister. The Minister was speaking at the launch of Firewatch - the SAPOL campaign to catch arsonists. “By keeping an eye out for arsonists, members of the community have a vital rote to play. “There is no question that arson is a serious crime and, to reflect this, our 20 year maximum term for convicted arsonists is the toughest in Australia.” People can support Firewatch by reporting any suspicious behaviour to police immediately on 131 444 – or pass on information about an arson incident to BankSA Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. The police are placing a large number of resources into the areas at risk, says the Minister.” In fact, in the past couple of days it has been patrols from their anti-arson unit, Operation Nomad, who have located fires on four occasions.” The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of bushfire arsonists is $50,000. Meantime, property owners who don't clean up their land will once again face penalties ranging from a $160 fine to a maximum $10,000 for failing to comply with the legislation. “The community must be bushfire ready,” says the Minister.

“The weather conditions experienced during the past couple of weeks are unprecedented and a sign that we can expect a long and active fire season.”

The CFS recommends a protection zone of at least 20 metres - you can create an effective fuel break by cutting long grass, removing dead vegetation and pruning lower tree limbs. Minister Carmel Zollo says the State Government is committed to support the work of fire fighters. “We value the work of all fire fighters and will to continue to ensure they are properly resourced. “Our volunteers, in particular, dedicate so much of their free time to help their communities.” The State Government has already spent or committed: $2 million to upgrade Personal Protective Equipment $2.4 million dollar to boost aerial fire fighting resources. “YOU SMELL NICE”

hen someone says this to me, I sometimes wonder if there are hidden connotations as to what they mean, if they say ‘what stinks around here’, their choice of words may infer there is a hygiene problem. Instead I like to think if one has dabbed subtle drops of a favourite perfume behind the ears and on the wrist, then perhaps it is an overall compliment.

An old aunt of mine, not into scent (the common name for perfume) always stressed that those smelly things were not as good as plain old velvet soap and water, she even used to say that ‘odecologny’ (her pronunciation of eau de cologne) was just a ploy for selling frippery things.

Actually, if one goes back as far as the Bible, allusions to perfumes were mentioned as being used to attract the opposite sex. Apparently, Cleopatra covered in perfume met Anthony on a barge, with sails soaked in rosewater.

Perfumes are made from many natural (plant and animal) and synthetic ingredients, distilled by steam and alcohol added to enhance the fragrance.

Some fine examples have 100 or so. Other techniques involve ‘maceration’ (steeping peels from fruit before being treated with alcohol).

Thankfully, some of the animal sources of perfumes such as musk, civet musk or ambergris from the sperm whale have been replaced by the use of synthetics due to price and ethical issues.

As they wear aftershave, a perfume by another name, rather than smelling of carnations or roses, men opted for fragrances such as spice, leather and wood, considered more masculine and ‘butch’, although sweeter ones are gradually winning favour as the men lean towards floral bases instead.

Even today in modern religions, frankincense and myrrh are still used to make crypts smell better.

During the Middle Ages in Europe perfume was most important in the higher social circles, as washing oneself was not a popular pastime, in fact clothes and wigs were never washed or cleaned and, eventually became particularly musty. Lice and fleas were an accepted part of life no matter from which social level.

Hygiene was non existent, and one can imagine that body odours would have been offensive, hence in our present time, we are immediately aware that someone has been remiss in any deodorant application.

When one talks of perfumes, then one also thinks of containers. The Ancient Egyptians way back at least 1000BC used scents and perfumes for various religious ceremonies. As it was most important that the perfume either did not go off in the heat or evaporate, perfumes were stored in mostly pottery bottles, but glass and pottery bottles were then used by the Greeks and Romans.

With increasing production of the Venetian glassblowing industry, elaborate perfume bottles and containers became very popular and, by the 1700’s they were decorated with gold, silver and jewellery to indicate the social status of the wearer.

Well known perfumers have more or less remained with their classic, simple and easily recognisable bottles however, newcomers to the market have gone for the exotic, although still popular, the containers often cost more than the contents.

The Romans, in particular splashed perfume around everywhere including in their baths, as they believed it could improve the prowess of men an d w om en . Sp ec ia l sl a ves c al l ed

‘cosmetae’ (why does that sound logical and aptly named?) were there just to keep their masters and mistresses fragrant smelling.

Not all perfumes are suited to everyone as metabolisms react differently to various aromas.

In France and other perfume fashion houses, there are specialists who compose perfumes for the individual taste, where an expert ‘nose’ or perfumer is trained to combine fragrance ingredients enabling them to capture the requested aroma as specified.

This same ‘nose’ may just be inspired to create a perfume that later becomes successfully marketed for smaller or independent perfume houses.

It is interesting to note that in the 18th century aromatic plants were being grown in one suitable region of France to provide the expanding perfume industry with the necessary raw materials. France remains the centre of perfume design and trade in Europe.

More and more there has emerged a trend for celebrities to market their own brand of perfumes, whether they be artists, footballers, pop stars,

divas, or actresses.

According to an old friend who was not au fait with the various names of well known brands, here are a couple in her words: Eva St Lawrence and Channel.

As a bit of perfume trivia, some of the world’s best known perfumers originally created their products from as far back as 1714 to the present, eau de cologne being one at that time.

Each Xmas my husband dutifully organises my annual gift of his favourite women’s perfume, and each year he asks “do you want the spray stuff or the dab stuff”? It is no earthly good to say “eau de toilette or eau de parfum”, it is all the same to him and too hard!

I must admit though that perhaps one year I may prefer something totally new and exciting. After all habit becomes boring and monotonous year after year and I still like to be surprised at my ripe old age. Looks like I will have to start hinting from now on as Xmas is not far away.

All good things must come to an end’ as the saying goes and October saw the end of our art sessions for another year. A year of furious creative activity and plenty of laughs. With water colourist Peter Chaplin, as our guest tutor, we definitely finished on a high note. His demonstration of a street in Melbourne’s Chinese quarter was fascinating to watch, particularly his technique in showing shadows and light on buildings, his ability to show groups of people with such limited strokes of the brush and his over all restricted selection and use of colour. But then, you will be able to judge for yourselves some time in 2007 when his generously donated painting, for which I sincerely thank him, will be gallery 88’s raffle prize. Peter’s advice and work with individual members after lunch was much appreciated. .

At this point I also wish to acknowledge the generosity of guest tutors throughout the year who have donated their time to the group and work to support our Community gallery. Also thanks go to Paul Jelfs for providing this ‘shop window’ through which, you, the local community are made aware of our activities as a community art group. 35 Artists Selected to Compete for Nation's Richest Landscape Art Prize

5 artists from right across Australia have been pre-selected, from a record number of entries, to compete for the $50,000 Fleurieu Peninsula Art Prize.

The Prize is the centrepiece of the 2006 Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale which will be held in South Australia’s picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula from 3 – 26 November 2006.

Established in 1998, the Fleurieu Peninsula Art Prize celebrates the enduring importance and the contemporary significance of landscape painting in the Australian art world.

Past Winners of the Fleurieu Art Prize include South Australia’s Robert Hannaford (1998) and New South Wales’ Elisabeth Cummings (2000) Joe Furlonger (2002) and Ian Grant (2004).

With awards totalling $90,000 and main prize on offer of $50,000, the program ranks as one of the most significant visual arts prize programs Australia-wide. The 2006 judging panel, National Gallery of Australia Director Ron Radford, curator and independent art writer Sarah Thomas, and artist Rick Amor recently spent time in the suitably picturesque McLaren Vale, to pre-select the entries

Fleurieu Peninsula celebrates its waders and wetlands

he Fleurieu Peninsula is celebrating one of nature’s most amazing events - the annual mass migration of thousands of birds from Siberia, North Asia and the Arctic Circle to South Australia – during the Wetlands & Waders Festival which runs until the end of November.

With the onset of spring, the festival provides the perfect opportunity for nature lovers to get out and enjoy the warmer weather, taking part in activities such as: Water Music – a poetry book launch Members of the Sandwriters Group have captured the Murray River, Coorong and the ocean in verse and word. Join the launch of this poetry book by Adelaide poet Jude Aquilina.

e are well and truly into summer, and as I write this article I have heard over the marine radio that there is a gale warning current with 35knot winds and 35 to 40 deg and we are hardly into October. What is it going to be like by February, I hate to think. The boating season has arrived and on a couple of occasions at Wirrina there has been in excess of fifty launches. We have had four incidents since the last Yank. News, and one could have been fairly serious but thankfully it turned out O.K. A large freighter traversing Back

Stairs Passage reported an empty dingy, complete with out board motor drifting in the shipping lanes off K.I. After contacting the water police it was decided that the matter should be investigated and to make sure that nobody had fallen out of the dingy. A report was also put in by the captain of the Sea Link Ferry who had also sighted the empty dingy. (Well-done Sea Link) The sea was fairly angry with three metre seas making the going pretty slow. After some time searching we eventually found the dingy, I think that it was a bit of luck with the sea conditions that we found it at all. It was half full of water, which we had to bail out to make the tow back to Wirrina a bit easier. To bail it out we had to board it and with the big sea running it was not a job for the faint hearted. Poor old Steve Marshal drew the short straw and got the job of boarding the dingy, well-done Steve. At this stage the police were trying to ascertain if any one had fallen out of the dingy and who owned it. There were registration numbers painted on but they were un- readable and finding out later that the dingy was not registered, did not help the situation at all. At about the same time a dingy was reported missing from The bay of Shoals and to cut a long story short this turned out to be the dingy in question. Some five hours after setting off on the search we arrived back at Wirrina with the dingy in tow. The local police were waiting at the pontoon to check out the craft and make a report to the water police. We have now made contact with the owner and he has given us a very generous donation for the recovery of the dingy.

Many thanks to the gentleman involved. As I mentioned several months ago, time was running out for fitting brakes on all boat trailers weighing over750kg when loaded. Well that time has now expired, so be prepared if you get pulled up either at the ramp or on the road, you will have to do some sweet-talking. If you want to fit them yourself, ask a couple of our members who have done an excellent Job on their own trailers. Well, that's all for this month. Safe boating and tight lines.

t last, the new sailing season commences on Sunday November 5th (weather permitting). The long winter season has finally drawn to an end and Club members can at last dust down their boats and welcome the start of the sailing season. This is the ideal time to contact us if you think that sailing might be your thing. Club membership is growing and we welcome new members, both experienced and new. Sailing is a great sport, both on those lazy days with little wind when you can sit back and leisurely watch the world go by on the beach, or challenge yourself on the windier days when you must be fully concentrating on sailing

the boat and be alert to any sudden shifts in the wind.

The cost of individual memberships has now been reduced $25 per annum and boat owners pay $10 each racing day. We hope that reduced membership fees will help to attract new members, both sailing and nonsailing ones.

Yankalilla's 70th birthday in November and a Teddy Bear's Picnic with our new Link Branch Milang on the 18th October. Other business matters were also dealt with. We fare-welled Pat Goulding whose moving to Strathalbyn. Pat has contributed to our Wrap with Love rugs & enjoyed many of our activities. We also discussed what involvement we could have with the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival. At the close of business we had afternoon tea and then prepared the two halls for Table Day, which was to be held the following day, Table Day was a great success held on 12th October at Myponga.

Branches from Goolwa, Pt Elliot, Victor Harbor, Hindmarsh Valley, Dela me re, Yan kali lla an d Myponga were in attendance.

Each branch supplied 2 card tables for competition. The first held 4 craft items to a song title theme and the second contained a jar of marmalade, an iced orange cake, a floral spray and a green arrangement. Individual members from all branches could then submit entries in the Green Arrangement, Floral Spray, Orange Cake, marmalade and 3

categories in photography for competition. A table was also available for each branch to display other items of craft only.

RECORD ENTRIES FOR SA TOURISM AWARDS

A

record number of entries have been received for the 2006 South Australian Tourism Awards, with 14 from the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Local entrants ranging from visitor information centres to a surf school will compete in their respective categories for the opportunity to be named one of South Australia’s finest tourism operators.

South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Bill Spurr says entries have jumped 10% this year to a total of 120 from across the State, following the introduction of a new three-tiered awards system, which aims to recognise and reward more entrants each year.

“Depending on the standard of entry, entrants may be acknowledged with a gold, silver or bronze medal, while the entrant with the highest score in each category will be known as the winner and go on to represent South Australia at the Australian Tourism Awards in February,” he

Such enterprise really encapsulates the idea of the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival which aims to celebrate the district and its marine emblem using this symbol of our biennial festivities.

Doug’s Motoring Tips SHOCK ABSORBERS This month I would like to talk about shockers.

In this rural area our roads are in pretty poor condition.

This well and truly accelerates the time your shockers will deteriorate compared with suburban driving.

Shockers are a very important safety device on your car, 4WD and some caravans etc.

They not only affect the vehicles handling on these windy roads, but also have a significant affect to the vehicles braking.

I.E. If your shockers are worn out and you need to brake suddenly, the distance you take to stop can be much longer than normal. Have a think about this and have your local mechanic check the condition of your shockers.

In it he asks that we all, as a community, support each other in relation to the area, which is fair enough. Some residents of Beachside Village Estate (BVE) are directly affected by the activities now taking place in this area. WE have an access road approximately 15 metres from our backdoor, which now carries all manner of vehicles carting construction material to the building site nonstop. This activity usually starts around 6.30 a.m. until dark with no respite as on week-ends a number of private vehicles use the road to take a closer look at the buildings.

Security to the site via the access road leaves something to be desired. A chain was provided to close off the road when not in use but the post that was placed to secure the chain has either been removed or knocked over and, as a result vehicles can now use the road anytime they like as we have heard on numerous occasions the presence of vehicles as early as 2.00 a.m. The chain at present now lies at the side of the road in long grass. Diesel fumes and dust are

ever present in our home forcing us to close all windows and doors in an effort to reduce this problem.

Thanks must go to High Country Trails Horse Stables (HCTHS) to allow C&Q to construct this access roads without any prior consultation with the residents affected by the consequences of their actions. Despite speed restriction signs within the area a number of contractors appear to ignore these and travel in excess of the 10 k/hr as designated. This situation has been brought to the attention of the site manager on numerous occasions and for a while there is a noticeable difference, but the old ways reappear a few days later. How long these conditions exist for, who knows? C&Q and HCTHS don't seem concerned and never once have they made contact with us over these issues. Mr McClurg, we also appreciate the wonderful attributes this area had to offer, that is why we chose to reside here, but now with the SSD we are apprehensive about our future lifestyle.

Association - Bungala Ward Preventing Bare Areas and Weeds in Horse t present there is no autonomous resident or ratepayer’s group for Yankalilla/ Normanville, so on Sunday the 15t of October a meeting took place, at the Yankalilla Senior Citizens Club. Those attending this meeting discussed and voted in a steering committee to establish a Bungala Resident and Ratepayers Association Inc (B.R.R.A Inc).

The steering committee will address the establishment of a constitution including objectives, and complete the required legal formalities.

The next, general meeting will be on Sunday 3rd December at 7.30pm in the Yankalilla Senior Citizens Club. We the group members will be calling for approximately 8-10 volunteers to form the committee. We strongly hope the Bungala community will get behind us so we in turn may assist individuals who have unresolved issues, for example with council. Any community members with a vested interest in the Bungala Ward are encouraged to attend.

It is envisaged that the new Association will have an independent and strong community voice, with the ability to support its members.

Paddocks – Just a reminder to those of you with horses that a follow up to the Healthy Soil, Healthy Horses Session held earlier this year, the Land Management Program, in partnership with Horse SA and Horses Land and Water, will be holding a workshop entitled Preventing Bare Areas and Weeds in Horse Paddocks on Friday November 17th from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm at Yankalilla. The aims of the workshop will be to guide participants through a process which will enable them to assess their properties in relation to factors such as pasture composition and ground cover, weeds and tracking and to implement strategies for improving pasture, preventing weeds and repairing and preventing tracking. The workshop is being organised by Simon Welch, Land Management Adviser with the Land Management Program. Desperately seeking rain whoever has our spring rain please can we have it back?

The longer days are making life easier to get it all done - even squeezing in some late afternoon riding - just all too dry.

Our October rally went well despite low numbers. Denise Sally Ryan and Cathy were instructing - Dee starting on the 'C' certificate practical work; Ryan, the theory. Sal instructing jumping and trot poles and Kathy continuing with Natural Horsemanship. Our small, but diligent group worked well. Welcome to new members Tomeka and Michelle Francis.

Welcome back to Denise, who has

been travelling around Europe, attending the International Equestrian Games in Germany. She also spent some time with our adopted German friend, Suzi who I believe kept her very busy - not that Dee needs much encouragement there.

Members have been busy competing in the last month or so.

Libby and Ryan went to the 'Monarto Horse Trials' mid September. Libby and 'Sly' finishing 1st in AL1 and Ryan and 'Wally' 3rd in PCl1. Great work.

The Yankalilla Show was a great day, was it not. Congratulations to the Show Society again for putting on a wonderful show.

D

uring the summer months, a variety of problems associated with heat may arise.

Care needs to be taken that animals are not left in hot cars.

The temperature rises rapidly once a car is parked in the sun, and what may appear to be a pleasant day outside, will be life threateningly hot inside the car.

Cats and dogs do not sweat as people do. Panting and radiation of heat from the skin surface are their main means of controlling body temperature. If the air temperature and humidity are high and the air circulation is reduced, these protective mechanisms may be inadequate.

Body temperature can increase dramatically, resulting in collapse and severe shock.

Animals not treated properly

may die of heat stroke. If an animal is found in such circumstances, cover it with a wet towel or tea towel to lower its body temperature. It will probably be unable to drink initially due to excessive panting, and may vomit soon after drinking. Emergency veterinary attention is required.

Animals at home should be given adequate shelter from the sun and access to cool drinking water. It is a good idea to have more than one water container available, in case the first one gets knocked over. A hessian bag under a bush or tree.

Dampened with water may be favoured as a cool resting place.

Moderate exercise in the cool of the morning or evening is advisable. Dogs with short flattened noses, such as pugs, Pekinese bulldogs and boxers are particularly susceptible to breathing difficulties if over

exercised and overheated. Dogs with heavy coats such as Alaskan Malamutes and huskies are prone to heat stress. In the evening, it should be remembered that the bitumen and concrete on the roads and footpaths might still be relatively hot. Dogs' pads can become burnt from walking on hot paths.

Some working dogs will continue to run until they dehydrate. This may be noticed as the dog getting a little wobbly, before lying down. For dogs that work themselves hard, electrolytes are worthwhile to have on hand to add to the drinking water. They should be given a small drink every half hour or so to prevent severe dehydration. As always in spring and summer, snakes are on the move, and letting dogs off leash in long grass or bush areas should be avoided. Caged birds

should not be left in the full sun, but should have shelter and shade available. They should not be placed in a position where breezes cannot be avoided, as a hot north wind may dehydrate them. Similarly, small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs and mice should have access to clean cool drinking water and shade.

t our October meeting we were short on members. We have lost a few members lately, also some were away on holiday or ill health. along a video on the Leafy Sea dragon. Unfortunately I had to leave before the speaker, but I understand that Lorraine and the video were very interesting and informative.

On Thursday 12th October it was Table Day for Cundell Group at held at Myponga. The theme for this year was a Song title, our branch chose "Somewhere over the Rainbow". Items to be judged on the table included a knitted coat hanger, a cross stitch card with a rainbow, sorbello knot scissor holder and crochet pin cushion.

Several other items with a rainbow theme were also on the table. We also had a table with floriculture and cooking Athalie Ford got 10 out of 10 for her marmalade. We were thrilled when the judges pronounced that Delamere was the winner.

Sue Williams, Vivien Hobbs and Sylvia Green also got highly recommended with photographs.

Well done everyone.

Next meeting on Thursday 2nd November will be International day.

he photo shows Philip Coulter with World Police & Fire Games visitors from the United States of America, Kathy Hooven, Lauren Robinson and Tony Adler wearing Cooper’s jackets and cap. Coopers Brewery are one of the World Police & Fire Games sponsors.

These visitors are part of the team of American Directors of the World Police & Fire Games. The next Games are being held in Adelaide between March 16 – 25, 2007. Whist here, they visited Yankalilla where they joined South Australian Police Board member Allan Vilcins for a weekend on Kangaroo Island, courtesy of Brian Parker.

As the Seminar Leader pointed out the Middle East is yet to experience a “time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation” (Daniel 12:1). Yet out of it a time of peace promised at the birth of the Lord will result, bringing security, stability and happiness as Jesus Christ rules with a balance of power and compassion; the hallmarks of his Kingship.

(Read Psalm 72).

Dear Reader, sadly church tradition and dogma has displaced the plain teaching of the scriptures and in many of your local churches you will not hear of the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to reign on earth over the Kingdom of God. The advice of the angels to the disciples on the Mount of Olives as they witnessed the ascension of the Lord is rarely advanced. “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11) When was the last time you heard it said that Christ is to return personally and visibly to the earth as King and Conqueror to occupy a throne?

The Church discards Christ’s own words! “When the Son of Man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory” (Matthew 25:31) The nature and locality of that throne are made plain by the declaration of the angel to Mary in regard to Jesus: “The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign

over the house of Jacob (Israel) for ever” (Luke 1:32) The throne of David was situated at Jerusalem and the Bible Prophets testified “they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem..” (Jeremiah 3:17). It might interest you dear reader that this would only come about in a period of time when the nation of Israel had been reborn in the Middle East. Listen to these words from Jeremiah “behold the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous branch and a king shall reign and prosper and shall execute judgement and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely..” (23:5) This is why the Lord Jesus Christ said to his disciples in Mat 19:28 “ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." For this to take place he knew that at a future time, a time when there would be a “rebirth” of Israel’s nation, as “regeneration” signifies, he would give positions of power to his disciples. David himself, in anticipation of the day when his Son and Lord should occupy his throne ruling in righteousness, declared: “This is all my salvation and all my desire” (2 Sam 23:35). He recognised that Christ is coming for that purpose: for, says Peter, David knew that “of the fruit of his lions, according to the flesh, God would raise up Christ to sit on his throne” (Acts 2:30) These references clearly show that if you accept the Bible as true, you are compelled to acknowledge that Christ is coming as a Monarch to occupy the restored throne of David and to reign on the earth as the promised King of the Jews. (Matt 2:2) When have these teachings of the Lord and his disciples; the prophets, and of God Himself been put to you dear reader by your Church leaders?

These truths have been abandoned by the Church centuries ago but the living Word of God will always remain a testimony against the corrupters of His Word. The Apostle Paul forecast these times when he wrote: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4) Sadly this has come to pass and today Christianity with all of its divided sects is a promoter of fables unsubstantiated by plain Bible

Walk Against Warming

have received many emails and calls from people wanting to know what they can do about Climate Change. Many feeling quite helpless and overwhelmed.

November 4th will provide the opportunity to show our decision makers how many of us are concerned about climate change as Adelaide participates in the International Event, Walk Against Warming.

Here is an your opportunity to do something!

Meeting at Adelaide Airport entrance (opposite IKEA) at 10am dressed for the beach (your choice of fashion) for a media event forecasting the future arrival of the coast at the airport with a 7m sea level rise.

At 10:30am we will move off to walk to West Beach down Burbridge Rd, a distance of under 4kms. When we get to the beach we'll have a speakers corner and set up a human sign on the beach obviously using ourselves as the text. This will be followed by a b.y.o. picnic lunch and the chance to enjoy the beach before it disappears under 7 metres of sea level rise.

Your role in this is to invite all your family , friends and workmates to be there too , because if we are ever to prevent dangerous climate change , we all need to show up and let Mr Howard know that we want action , not scepticism!

Drought Conditions

easonal conditions across Australia have manifested themselves locally in the electorate of Finniss. The Federal Government has announced a drought package which may be able to be accessed locally in due course. I am particularly conscious that on some parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula, stock

water and domestic water is very low and water carting will have to be a major part of the primary producers’ activities and expenses until we get substantial rainfall and run off.

While Primary Industries locally are running some drought related meetings, I am making residents aware that my office is available to assist in sourcing possible funding areas and support service advice.

No to Rodeo say Lions Club

T

he Yankalilla Lions Club has made a safe business decision in deciding not to go ahead with the January 2007 Rodeo. Chairman of the Yankalilla Rodeo Committee, Michael Fogden commented that the Yankalilla Lions Club had made a “safe business decision” and it wasn't because of any activist pressure.

Mr Fogden stated that the committee has offered assistance with running the

event if another group decides to go ahead with it. They are currently negotiating with a separate unnamed group who may be willing.

Rotary and Lions both used to be involved with the organisation of the event, Rotary have also decided it would no longer be involved.

The rodeo had injected around $50,000 back in community groups and projects over the past nine years.

[ as noted in the book ‘To Find The Way, Yankalilla and District 1836 – 1986 written by R.F. Williams purchased from the Yankalilla and District Historical Society Inc. at the Yankalilla Museum] Silver – lead – copper shows were found over a wide area, mainly along the coast from Rapid Bay to Sellick’s Hill 1844 H.W. Phillips was the first person to mine when he noticed surface indications of lead and copper on his property at Rapid Bay. Phillips opened up the most promising mine and named it ‘Yattagolinga Mine’ Twelve men were employed in the first year and raised fifty tons of hand-picked ore averaging 75% lead and 22 – 25 ounces of silver to the ton.

1850 The Mine closed with a total production of 190 tons of handpicked silver – lead – copper – ore.

The ‘Yattagolinga’, ‘Wheal Coglin’, and ‘Great Southern Mine’ at Rapid Bay , were re-opened in 1910 , very little ore was recovered but a huge underground cave was found 1862 The ‘Wheal Mary – Barrett’s Mine’ William Barrett purchased land in Carrickalinga – known as ‘Devonshire Farm’, The mine yielded 130 tons of galena worth approximately ten pounds [$20] per ton , the mine closed in 1873 1862 The Campbell Creek Mine.

Intense prospecting revealed the ‘Campbell Creek’ lode, a mine was opened in 1862.

27 tons of ore containing up to 65 ounces of silver per ton were raised in the first six months.

After several changes of owner-ship and steady production, work ceased in 1868 1862 Talisker Mine The Mc Leods of Cape Jervis discovered a deposit of galena while searching for gold and named the mine ‘Talisker’, after a town in their homeland, the Isle of Skye.

Surface ore samples were taken to estimate the richness of the lodes. The first returned 200 ounces of silver to the ton.

The Talisker Mine Company was established late 1862, with twenty men engaged under the management of Captain Jenkins and Son. Two mining ‘townships’ were built, Silverton and Silverton Extended, to house the miners and their families.

The area grew into a large ‘township’, it included – Post Office, General Store, Restaurant, Hotel, a Wesleyan Church, Day School, and a Night School for youths employed during the day

Re: Mining in Wild Dog Creek All production was shipped from Fishery Bay, this continued to 1866; 36,000 bags of ore weighing 1600 tons and 890 tons of ingots were carried by the men who waded through the chest-high water to the waiting ships.

1870 was a disappointing one for the company, shallow reserves were exhausted and an expected continuation of the ore at depth did not eventuate.

1871 the Main Shaft had been sunk to its maximum depth of 132 metres and the pumping engine had difficulty coping with the volume of water 1872 the Mine closed, the 50 employees, the Company owed them two months wages, were offered employment at Moonta – Wallaroo Mines .

Total production from 1862 –1872 was valued at 46,000pounds [$92,000] but no dividend was ever paid.

The Mine was re-opened in 1890 with the driving of a new adit from Campbells Creek into the workings but operation ceased in1891.

Interest in Talisker Mine revived in 1917 owing to the demand for arsenic contained within the silver-lead ore, this continued until 1925.

The original Talisker Mine lease remained as un-allotted Crown Land until 1976 the area became a recreation Reserve, this became Talisker Conservation Park in 1985.

1864 The ‘Callawonga Creek Goldfield at Parawa had been worked intermittently since 1864., sometimes known as ‘Gold Digging Swamp’ – it is noted for its extremely finely divided gold which makes it difficult to pan. No ‘mother lode’ as such has been found, but traces of gold were found at the bottom of a shaft on ‘Coronation Block’.

1865 ‘Wheal Coglin and Smelting Co. Rapid Bay Patrick Coglan discovered a silver – lead show on his sheep-farm property at Rapid Bay and a Mine was floated.

The discovery created a sensation with speculative mining circles of the day.

The steamer ‘Elanor’ was chartered to take a party from Glenelg to Rapid Bay. Pklus, a German Band from Melbourne to ‘lend colour to the proceedings’ The visitors were taken ashore by small boats.

Patrick Coglin , mounted on hos horse, welcomed the visitors.

The Mine ‘Wheal Coglin’ was sold for 25,000pounds ]&50,000]and renamed ‘Wheal Coglinand Smelting Co.Ltd. The Company sank sixteen shafta, the deepest to 258 feet, resulting in production of 70tons of hand-picked silver-lead-zinc ore, shipped to England for treatment.

The Mine closed in 1869 1866 Myponga Cliff

William Crouch worked a claim at Myponga Cliff, taking much of his ore by a 858feet adit.

Un-favourable report from Government Geologist caused abandonment of the Mine.

[David Crouch took up the lease of the Myponga silver mine and he raised 30 tons of galena ore from four - 50ft. shafts.

1871 Mount Jagged A very rich deposit of haematite in quartz was found, The S.A. Iron and Steel Company held the leases from 1872 – 1875and erected a charcoal burning smelter nearby to treat the ore 1901 The ‘Golden Ridge Mine’ between Second Valley and Little Gorge.

A 150 feet long lode was opened up.

A ten-head gold stamp was installed and 680 tons of ore containing 3dwt per ton were treated . Operations ceased in 1903, the Mine was reopened in 1930 – 1934 with a very small yield discovered,1911-1918 ‘Queen Mary’ and ‘Gaba Tepe’ Mines were mined for tungsten and gold.

Five hundred tons of ore yielded three tons of Ferberite [iron tungstate] Ferberite was discovered in 1911 by 71 year old prospector Mr John Munro 1912 –1918 The ‘Olivaster Silver Lead Mining Co. sunk a shaft at the top of a hill at Rapid Bay,due to the high cost of freight and charges closed the Mine.

1913 – 1919 Carrickalinga Head.

The first alunite discovered in South Aust. Was on the cliff – tops just north of Carrickaling Head.

A small trial sample sent to England for valuation received a favourable report with Regards to quality – this resulted in a to mine the Company formed deposit.

Mining by open-cut, shafts and adits began in 1914.

Pods of alunite up to four feet across were found.

Work ceased due to the outbreak of war.

Due to a demand for Potash products full scale mining began in 1916.

Mine Manager W. Shakeshaft and six men were employed .

Several orders of 50 tons were fulfilled , the alunite being shipped from Normanville .

Production declined and the Mine closed in 1919 1953 Myponga uranium W.F. and J.J. Wenham received an award of 5,000pounds [$10,000]for finding uranium at Myponga.

The S.A. Mines Dept investigated the prospect and extracted 340 tonms of ore, which yielded 2,748 lbs. of yellow-cake [u308].

The Mine was closed 1955 1920’s Rapid Bay Limestone..

In the mid.1920’s the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. Became

interested in the limestone deposits in the Rapid Bay district.

Small samples from Rapid Bay were taken to Second Valley where they were shipped away for testing.

1938 A consignment of 800 tons of limestone was quarried and trucked to Second Valley where it was more or less hand-loaded on to the ‘S.S. Kapara.’ And shipped to Newcastle for trials and testing.

1940 The testing proved successful , five men were hired from Whyalla, they pitched their tents and began building – men’s quarters, a mess room, and office.

During the next two years the building of the Mine began – quarry – face and floor were developed , primary and secondary crushers installed with the associated conveyors, a screening tower erected over a storage bin 15,000ton capacity constructed in a natural gully.

A 1600 ft. jetty with a 650 ft. ‘T’ head built and a conveyor system installed to give a loading rate of 1,200tons per hour.

At the peak of construction 150 men were employed.

Houses were built for employees , electricity installed 1942 Production began and the first ship ‘Iron Knobs’ loaded with 5000 tons of limestone to be taken to Newcastle.

At first children of School –age were transported to and from the Delamere School in a large car, then due to increase in numbers of school-age children. the parents pleaded with the Education Dept. for a ‘local’ school 1950. The children were temporarily accommodated in the Mine Co.’s mess –room.

Nov. 1950 a new School was built in Rapid Bay and officially opened, 34 pupils attended the School.

At the peak production in the late 1950’s two shifts per day were being worked and about 60,000 tons of limestone per month were being shipped.

1981 The Company advised the 27 workers that sourcing limestone at Rapid Bay would cease, due to changes in technology and quality requirements.

The quarry was offered as a going concern, the houses on the eastern side of the Co’s property were for private sale.

1982 Adelaide Brighton Cement took over the Rapid Bay Limestone business.

For almost 12 months cartage of limestone was by a large number of very large-heavy vehicles travelling all hours to deliver the limestone, this caused annoyance for residents who lived on the Main Road through – Normanville, Yankalilla and Myponga Pat Nias Normanville

‘God has made everything beautiful in its time,’ says the Bible, ‘and has also set eternity in the hearts of men.’ Ecc 3:10 Why has God set us in such finite and fragile circumstances? Surely, to think beyond ourselves and make us aware of our dependence.

Cryonic suspension isn’t the way to go

Resurrection is the genius of God – the miraculous restoration of the personality in a body that will last for ever.

The Bible teaches an instantaneous and dynamic resurrection. It refers to it in 1 Corinthians 15: ‘Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changedin a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 1 Cor 15:51-54 Another of the many references to the resurrection is Phil 3:20-21: ‘But our citizenship is in heaven.

And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his

control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.’

Unlike cryonic suspension in which people anticipate being thawed in a diseased condition hoping for advancement in medical science, believers in Jesus Christ expect to be dynamically raised in a body free from defect – designed for eternity.

Cryonic suspension depends on the management. Will the business remain solvent? Will its operators be able to pass the care of frozen bodies on to others in the centuries ahead?

The big thing about the freezing of bodies is that no one has returned to prove it. Christian faith is based on the fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ – the one who ‘was crucified, dead and buried’ and who rose again on the third day.’ The risen Christ said: ‘I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.’ Rev 1:17-18 What kind of world will believers in Christ return to? Will it be a world at war, ravaged by hunger and disease and made uninhabitable by our irresponsibility?

The Bible speaks of a new heaven and a new earth in which dwells righteousness (2 Peter 3). God, who by his omnipotent power and wisdom created the universe and everything in it, will reconstitute the heaven and the earth. Those resurrected will return to a perfect world.

Jesus said, ‘For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.’ John 6:40 ‘We have nothing to lose,’ says the crypto preservationist. ‘We have everything to gain,’ says the Christian believer.

The Bible says, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.’

ALBERT RONALD MORRISS BOWYER 11th February 1911 - 17th September 2006 Last issue we reported on the death of local icon, Morrie Bowyer. We have since been sent the eulogy written by his son Royce. We have included it here as is contains many interesting historical references as well as being a good story.

M

orriss was born at Woodville in Adelaide 11th February 1911 and moved at an early age to “Forktree” station near Normanville where his father was the manager.

They then moved to “Mill Farm”.

Morriss was raised with his three brothers Hiram, Melville and David at “Mill Farm” which is now know as “Comic Court Lodge”, being named after the 1950 Melbourne Cup winner Comic Court who was bred by Morriss’ brothers at Mill Farm.

The four boys had many stories to tell of their early experiences; Morriss told the story of when his father once asked him and Hiram to sing, and not being one of their favourite pastimes refused the request. As a consequence their father took them over the road to the Catholic Cemetery and tied them up in the dark and left them.

This was just another challenge, they untied each other and explored the headstones and then tied each other up again, waiting for their father to return.

Another story Morriss told; He and Hiram were thatching a roof on a haystack where they became bored so decided to try their skills with a circus trick or two. Morriss held a tall ladder and Hiram proceeded to clim it, which was between two of the stacks, when Hiram reached the top Morriss jokingly call out ‘I’ve lost it’ and

Hiram thinking he had, jumped for the stack and missed, hitting the ground with a thud. Needless to say neither joined the circus.

As he got older another of Morriss’s hazardous weekend amusements was to round up the steers at Tunkalilla Station along with his co-workers and stage their own rodeos, sometimes with painful consequences.

Morriss did outside work to supplement his income including general farmhand, road making and grape picking in between hand milking cows, to buy his first farm of 22 acres at Hay Flat.

It was from this base that he met his wife Nancy Hamlyn who lived on a property next door and after an extensive courtship they were married at Christ Church Yankalilla on 22nd January 1938. Morris and Nancy began their long partnership on the 22 acres Morriss had bought next door. The following August their first child Royce was born and three and a half years later their second child Faye arrived.

Morriss has four loving grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Morriss later added another 23 acres while renting a further 80 acres. In the early beginnings they milked 30 cows by hand, so it can be said Morriss was no stranger to hard work.

Morriss would tell how he would walk behind horses harrowing paddocks all day only stopping for lunch. ‘They were the days’ when men really knew what work was.

One of dads greatest challenges came when he lost his thumb and forefinger in a farm accident while in the prime of his life. Although

this was a tragic setback to his career, he persevered overcoming the disability with amazing courage and dexterity. Dad had always been a hard working man and had little interest in anything else, including sport. He thought there were better way of keeping fit than to chase a bag of air around all day.

He was always a very generous man preferring to give rather than receive which is a rare trait found today.

He was one of the few givers in this world, as anyone who knew him well would testify, remembering his many kind gestures. It may have been considered a virtue by some but it gave Dad his greatest pleasure in life when he was giving.

After Mum passed away on 6th June 2002 at the age of 90, things were not the same for Dad and he never fully recovered from the loss of his soul mate of more than 60 years. It became evident near the end, this wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many, was ready to join his long time partner at last to rest in peace. The family although saddened by his passing should celebrate this wonderful life of 95 years, with the knowledge we all loved and respected him.

Dad had some very dear friends whom I would like to sincerely thank for their unselfish dedication they have shown towards us all over many years to make dad part of their lives and comfort him in time of need. You are true friends and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the love and dedication shown by all the staff at

the Aged Care Facility at Yankalilla, especially those in the East wing. Their compassion love and sincerity really shone through over the last few days, all prepared to do what ever it took to maintain his dignity and comfort to the last.

It was very clear to see how much he meant to them by their sadness when he reached the end. They all thought the world of him and he will be sadly missed. A special thank you to Dr Christie for the care he gave dad over a long period and for maintaining his comfort during this difficult time.

I would like to acknowledge the many hours Wendy has dedicated to the happiness and wellbeing of dad through her love, compassion and consideration over many years, she looked upon him as if he were her own father.

Goodbye old mate, thanks for the good times and great memories!

You can now rest in peace.

With the dire warning about bushfires confronting Australia this summer I think your warning will resonate with a sense of foreboding, I remember my doctor friend complaining that even though the authorities were well aware of the impact a white tailed spider can have on a person’s long term health, there was no manifest declaration or announcement about this ,just media warnings and some lame attempt at researching the little bastardinos. The more the govt talks about an issue, obviously the more it is committed to addressing or correcting it’s impacts.

It is interesting to note that the Euro wasp infestation in 1980 had more attention and research money spent on it as it’s effect on the honey bee industry was potentially threatening Australia’s honey bee industry and regional jobs.

BOTTOM LINE if a phenomenon impacts negatively on fiscal/industrial/economic considerations then a Government MAY ACT, other wise we have to fend for ourselves, and hopefully not become AMPUTEES or worse in the process, I have also been a spider bite victim.

I was bitten on the face while asleep and woke to find a soccer ball growing out of my face when I was out bush in Australia during my time in the army, and have had intermittent out breaks ever since.

I hate the white tail BBBsss and kill everyone I see “So nothing has changed even though I have presented over 10,000 signatures to the Government ,over the last 10 years.

oz and I are going to live apart, except for fortnightly ‘get togethers’, for nearly a year as I go to my new parish based on Keith, in South Australia.

How can such an arrangement work? Well, I think it has to do with the love that exists between us and which has been forged through true friendship. That friendship allows each of us to recognise the needs of the other and to make adjustments so those needs can be realised.

Loving another person must surely be the most difficult task that has been entrusted to us. I know people talk about love at first sight—it doesn’t happen; it’s a fairy tale. Certainly there is that time when someone is the object of your desire and passion and you are filled with physical and sexual excitement. That’s what the Greeks called ‘eros’, and it doesn’t last forever.

They had another word for ‘love’. It is ‘philia’, and it indicates a fondness, which develops as people are attracted to each other and build a relationship within, or outside, the concept of

Many are not and that is a recipe for disaster because they do not understand the hard work that has to go into true friendship.

ACH Yankalilla Centre Says Eat My Cake!

t was a beautiful Spring day on September 30th. The day that saw the Eagles devastate all Swan fans by beating the reining premiers by 1 point. This was also the day that Yankalilla came alive. A day in which local community organisations show their support for the district , for residents and friends to come together to share some laughs and good fun.

ACH Yankalilla Centre is very much a part of this great community. With many local volunteers and a high percentage of local residents, we feel compelled to be apart of such a uniting tradition. It has become a tradition with our residents to attend and experience the atmosphere of the show, meet up with some old friends, and for some to help man the stall. The sights, sounds and especially the food at the show can bring back some powerful memories of earlier years. This, once again proving, that these types of events are not only for the young, but for the young at heart.

Our part in the show started many weeks ago with our volunteer group “Friends of Yankalilla Centre” agreeing on a plan for the show stall.

This year, our plan was to sell cakes and coffee to the show patrons. We asked our volunteers and staff to make cakes to donate to the stall for us to sell. We also had some cooking afternoons at the Centre where all those interested had the opportunity to make something to be sold at the stall. Once again we were thrilled with the willingness of our staff, volunteers and residents to support the event.

With a variety of cakes, jams, chocolates and refreshments, we set up and sold our wares. Our bar cakes seemed to be the most popular as many locals and visitors went home with something sweet to indulge in from our humble stall. Thank you to all who bought something from us on the day. We enjoyed your company and appreciate your patronage.

Our other fundraising venture associated with the Yankalilla Show was our Dinner Indulgence Raffle. Our illustrious volunteer Carol Seagren, sent the word out to some of our local restaurants asking for donations of a dinner voucher. We were over joyed when we got 11 positive responses. Due to these very impressive prizes our $1 raffle tickets sold well. The winners of the Dinner Indulgence vouchers were drawn at the Yankalilla Show at 3pm by Mayor Peter Whitford.

ll staff at the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre warmly welcome its children and their families. However, as with all kindy welcomes there are farewells to bid! We wish Bianca, Caleb, Campbell, Danik and Jasmin the very best. The holidays allowed some time to reflect upon term three. Children were able to experience a myriad of activity that encompassed much creativity and diversity. An excursion to Second Valley to watch a wonderful production of ‘Kids in Camelot’ performed by the students of Rapid Bay Primary School, was a real treat for us as was having the opportunity to ‘help’ community artist Helen Jackson create mosaic farm pavers for our centre – they look great! Each term kindy children walk to the Yankalilla ACH to visit. This term children sang old-fashioned songs with the

Another regular outing is our weekly walk to the playground and library. With children unselfconsciously holding hands and enjoying a chat along the warm, it seems to be a favourite!

Emma Irvine form Dance SA worked with both care and kindy children to create dances. The children enjoyed these session and costumes and were then able to perform to family and friends on Fathers Night and for out last day of term. Thank you Emma. Toward the end of term (and the end of the alphabet!) animals featured prominently at Kindy and we were fortunate to have Carla from the Yankalilla Vet Surgery come and speak to us about caring for animals. We listen to our beating hearts with a stethoscope, Jasmine pretended to operate on Orion and Carla explained to us NEVER to feed our pets chocolate. She gave the children animal stickers and an ENORMOUS block of chocolate which the teachers shared out. Thank you Carla for your time and effort. Finally, reaching ‘Zig Zag Zebra’ meant an excursion to the Zoo. Some of the older children were able to come along too and together they observed many different creatures before settling down to a picnic lunch.

Term four always proves to be a thoughtful and busy time with the culmination of the year’s event and children excitedly preparing for Christmas and holiday celebrations. I expect at the time of publication we will be singing and learning about
