Yankalilla Landscaping & Garden Centre under New Ownership

T

he Yankalilla Landscaping and Garden Centre has changed ownership. Brad and Samantha Riddle from Victor Harbor purchased the business in April and are looking forward to servicing the local region. Brad who is originally from Penong on the Far West Coast and Sam are looking forward to moving to Yankalilla in the next few weeks and becoming involved in the local community.

Although the ownership has

changed you will still see all the familiar faces at the centre with Jane and the staff providing expert advice on all your gardening & landscaping needs.

Brad and Samantha are slowly giving the centre a facelift and are aiming to expand the nursery aspect of the business.

Flowers for Mum – Profits for Yankalilla Children’s Centre

T

he YCCC is planning to create a new position in the centre as “Community Support Worker” The position will entail the employment of a local person with a disability. The Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre has benefited from employing local people with disabilities either in a paid or voluntary capacity for many years. The Governing Council of the Centre would like to formalise this position and utilise the Commonwealth Government “Supported Wage Scheme” to be able to offer some regular work to a person from our community who meets the funding criteria. This position is currently being targeted towards Donna Brook who has been working at the centre for the last 8 months. As the funding for this position requires extra fundraising on behalf of the governing council a number of corporate sponsorship activities and additional fundraising projects will need to be undertaken and are currently being drawn up.

As a first initiative to raise funds to support the “Community Support Worker” position the YCCC will be selling and taking orders for "Mother's Day". flower arrangements. All profits will go directly to the Yankalilla Community Children’s Centre. If you would like to place an order you can ring Andrea Travers of Fleurieu Flowers on 0422 254 861 or the Centre on 8558 2387. Orders need to be placed by 5th May. We also expect to be able to offer more flower arrangements on sale through various hotels in Yankalilla and Normanville.

Ok, so we are a few days late on this issue. We won’t get into details but there many things happening that were out of our control.

Judging by your comments in the shop and around the area, we should keep the jokes, that’s fine by us.

Congratulations to everyone involved in coordinating the events for the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival. What a huge success this event was yet again. Well done to everyone who took part in one form or another, it was great to see the township full of colour and activity. See you all again in 2009!

Winter is coming and hopefully there will be some rain! Can you remember what rain is? It’s the wet stuff that drops from the sky in case you were wondering.

As we head for the mid-year quiet patch, it must be time to cut up that firewood and refill the gas bottles, find the old furry slippers and go into a semi-hibernation state. Sounds pretty good doesn’t it. But we still have to go to work, which sort of gets in the way of those somewhat enticing plans.

Well, it has just started raining as we go to press, hopefully it keeps going.

Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism winners announced

ore than 200 people gathered at a gala dinner on Wednesday 28 March to celebrate the Fleurieu Peninsula’s best tourism operators at the 2007 Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Awards.

Held at the Victory Hotel and hosted by Ron Kandelaars from Channel 9’s travel series Postcards, the night recognised existing businesses such as the popular Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram as well as awarding newcomers such as Red Poles in McLaren Vale which took out best New Tourism Development.

“The Fleurieu Peninsula is one of Australia’s most stunning tourism regions and once again these awards have revealed the high calibre of tourist attractions and facilities that exist across the region,” Tourism Marketing Manager Roz Becker says. “In addition to our wildlife, superb coastlines, rolling hills and world-class wine regions, we offer accommodation, booking services, restaurants, attractions and regional produce that enrich the visitor experience making the Fleurieu Peninsula the perfect holiday destination.”

The Outstanding Personal Contribution to Tourism Award went to Pamela Jensen, who has supported and assisted the Willunga Quarry Farmers Markets, which last year celebrated its 20th birthday while Kathleen White won the Scholarship Award to continue tourism studies at the Adelaide Institute of TAFE. The 14 other categories, ranging from Best Hosted B&B through to Best Tourism Media, were hotly contested with a number of entrants winning awards for the second year running.

Normanville Beach Caravan Park won the Best Caravan Park and McCracken Country Club won Best Hotel/Motel/ Pub or the second year in a row while the Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram won Best Tour Operator and was highly commended for Best General Tourism Services.

Other winners included Parri Estate Wines for Best Tourism Winery, South Coast Surf Academy for Best Visitor Attraction and Porter Street Wildlife Gallery for Best Tourism Retailing.

In the Local Government Courtesy Awards, a number of people were recognised for their contributions to the tourism industry including organisers of the Langhorne Creek Vintage Affair and Normanville New Year’s Pageant as well as volunteers Pip and Sue Burfield and Cheryl Batic and Kate Fleming.

“On behalf of Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism, I would like to congratulate all of the winners and businesses which entered the awards. It is your combined effort which is helping to make the Fleurieu Peninsula such a popular tourism destination,” Ms Becker says. In the 12 months to September 2006, Fleurieu Peninsula recorded more domestic visitors than any other South Australian tourism region, excluding Adelaide.

he USA Directors Kathy Hooven, Lauren Robinson & Tony Adler returned last week to the World Police & Fire Games held in Adelaide. The Directors holiday on K.I and Carrickalinga, plus visits to Victor Harbor, Yankalilla, and Normanville were advertised in this paper in 2006.

Their input about the area and wildlife was included in a Tourism brochure which was circulated to all visiting Athletes, as places to see & things to do.

Kathy, Lauren & Tony thanked Pauline & Philip Coulter for their special Aussie BBQ by inviting them to attend a thank you dignitaries dinner held at the Adelaide Hyatt. This dinner was attended by 300 dignitaries including the games patron our Governor the Most Honourable Marjory Jackson.

ell this month has seen the inside of the Child Care Centre receive a much needed face-lift! Local painter, David Rossiter, very kindly donated his time & expertise to supervise a group of parent volunteers. The group came in over 2 days (Saturday 31st March & Sunday 1st April) & painted the childcare section, kitchen, children's bathroom, & sleeproom. A sausage sizzle was provided both days with cold beer donated by the Normanville Hotel.

A big thank you to the following people for Cameron, Cooper, Lochie, Denver, giving up their time to get this big job done Darcy, Molly and Oscar with minimal disruption to the centre.

I guess the highlight for the month of April was the Easter weekend.

From a Police point of view things went very well. Although there was a high influx of people to our area things were overall very good. We had no serious vehicle accidents in our area and no drink drivers apprehended. With the high amount of road users came a high amount of speeding and other traffic offences detected.

The other good result was the lack of taskings in general, things are often very busy when we have a lot of visitors to the area.

A friendly reminder – Don’t forget to check your vehicles regarding road safety. It just may rain at some stage and you will need to be sure that those tyres and brakes are going to pull you up in time.

Make sure that your lights and indicators are all operating correctly too.

“UNDER THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS” by Rox Rosey

ity of smelly canals, ancient buildings held up and supported by rotting, wooden posts.

Romantic images of handsome, young men plying their poles as they steered the gondolas for the tourists.

This is the most popular image portrayed in books and travel brochures.

However, to coin a phrase, ‘you have to be there’ and what a surprise and a total re-assessment of pre-conceived ideas originally held.

Venice was founded in about 421 AD on April 25th, St Mark’s Day, St Mark being the patron saint of Venice. Actually, Venice was first known as the Serenissima Repubblica.

Tales of Marco Polo and his journey from Venice to China during the Middle Ages period from 1271-95 have kept the legend alive and provided much input for modern day historians.

The aftermath of another plague in Italy during 1630 was the start of the decadence of Serenissima Repubblica.

In 1797 Napoleon defeated the Venetian Republic and it became part of the Austrian Hapsburg Empire. Not until 1860 did Guiseppe Garibaldi

make it possible for Italy to join with Venice to become a nation which eventually occurred in 1866.

There is so much history connected with famous landmarks, that once a visitor arrives in Venice, the time is fully taken up with absorbing the culture, beauty and wonderment of its attractions, in fact there never seems enough time to complete any itinerary.

Imagine if you will, travelling from Florence via Bologna, still recovering from the wonder and beauty of those areas and arriving in the canal city of Venice Just think of being a foreigner in Venice standing in St Mark’s square surrounded by pigeons, thousands and thousands of them sitting precariously on the statues and buildings. Unfortunately, due to pollution, atmospheric conditions and, of course centuries of layers of guano deposits have contributed to the deterioration of buildings and statues alike. The pigeons have been thwarted somewhat as needle like spikes have been set on ledges to discourage them from perching. I reckon that deterrent would discourage all those thinking of settling there!

What is most noticeable is that any protuberances on buildings and statues have, over the centuries, eroded away.

As we approached the landing stage, one could only stand and take in the colours surrounding us; houses painted different colours and, according to our guide, there was purpose in this as locals returning from their fishing expeditions, could instantly identify their own home.

simplicity and variety of the meal not having been surpassed over the years.

A walk around the town, over little bridges displaying shops selling lace, hand blown glass objects and, hand embroidered linen, to name a few. I tried to work a swifty by offering some Australian memorabilia in exchange for some extra souvenirs but, all I got was a smile, perhaps the shopkeepers had heard it all before.

Upon our return to St Mark’s square in Venice, a visit to a glass blowing factory, I always imagined glass blowers having permanently rounded cheeks from plying their trade. However, their wares were worthy of the pride and expertise of their craft.

Next item on our itinerary, one of the famous gondola rides around the old city canals, finally joining up with five other gondolas, complete with an accordion playing singer. A truly memorable trip under the Bridge of Sighs, with tourists waving to us from the bridge as they strolled around enjoying their Sunday outing.

I had always imagined that the gondoliers wore their colourful costumes all the time, however their red and white striped shirts and accompanying finery is confined to the tourist trade as this is what visitors expect to see. Everyday garb is not so colourful. We would not have minded as this hour long trip was an event not to be forgotten.

We didn’t even mind the sometime wet, windy, cold and inclement weather, although the Venetian shopkeepers were quick to increase the price of their umbrellas within twenty four hours when the rain poured down. Later, we were to learn that there had been so much rain, it had flooded St Marks’s Square – we would have needed wellies as well to combat the deluge, an all consuming flood covering everything.

There was also the surprise of discovering that to have a comfort stop, one had to purchase coffee and the receipt included entry to the appropriate facility.

I was most chagrined when I missed out on an inexpensive pair of shoes after seeing them displayed in a shop window. There I was seeing myself back in old Victor wearing my genuine, elegant Italian leather shoes making my very own fashion statement. Sadly I was unaware that shops closed for the afternoon siesta, not opening for business again until early evening which was long after we had departed the shopping district.

However, I did manage to spoil myself with a necklace of colourful, mosaic beads, an unusual gift that is obviously of Venetian origin.

Too soon our stay in Venice came to an end and, it was off to another Italian city Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet (another story to be told) en route to Innsbruck in Austria

Greetings from a state of emergency...

will try to recall how things evolved last Monday morning. It is a bit of a blur really, and we are still feeling a bit paranoid as small to medium shocks continue to rock the boat.

We had left the island of Liapari on the Sunday to sail to Gizo to clear customs and stock up the boat. We had very little in the way of food and even less alcohol (and you know how we do enjoy our happy hour).

Anyway on Monday morning, in Gizo, we were enjoying a cup of tea in bed when the earthquake struck. It was about 7.45am. apparently. The boat lurched and shuddered violently for some time and the roar of a 'jet engine' above us was the most frightening. We were out of bed like a shot, but had to hold on as the motion was so violent. Up on deck, we saw the sea all around us was confused, peaking waves going nowhere. Houses in the Gilbertese village were falling and there was a lot of yelling. Immediate confusion. It was obvious this was an earthquake, but would there be a tidal wave to go with it? Three other boats in the harbour with us, all anchored quite close together towards the end by the Gilbertese village. We soon had a consensus that we would stay put after some hurried discussion via VHF radio. Our first thought was to make a run for open sea, but the 3 passages out of the harbour are long and tortuous with many patch reefs to be negotiated....too risky.

wharves along the town side of the harbour came out into the middle of the harbour.

Many canoes also, from the market which was already in full swing.....and we waited. Constant speculation over the radio from the other yachts as they wondered if we were doing the right thing. I really wished they would just shut up! Rainer and I figured if the local boats were OK about riding something out in the harbour, it must be the best option??????? We were anchored in 12.5 m. Soon we noticed that the water level was dropping. More canoes came out of the Gilbertese village, which was already decimated from the effects of the earthquake. Some were hanging on to our boat. Rock, reef and the reclaimed islands the Gilbertese build their houses on were soon exposed.

Honestly, it was as though someone had pulled out the plug.

Seaplusplus was bow on to the receding water...about 50 m from land...not far!!! By now we have people on the boat with us, out of a canoe...and it took some persuading from us to get them to move. Suddenly, over the radio came this voice just filled with dread...'look what's coming around the corner'. There was the tsunami, white water leaping and dancing high in the air. The boats swung to meet the onslaught. The white water dissipated, and the massive surge passed under us. Our anchor held, thank the Lord! As the harbour filled up and spilled into the town, our focus was on the village which was being consumed by the

Yankalilla Art Group Greetings all Sketch Block readers. My sincere apologies for the none appearance of the column in April’s News Letter. No excuse, just forgetfulness and the swiftness of time.

Anyway you will have more to read and enjoy this time round.

The Art Group cancelled its April session due to its involvement in producing work for the Easter Art Show, gallery 88’s Leafy Sea Dragon Exhibition and Lantern making for the opening ceremony of the Festival, plus a few workshops thrown in just for fun.

Our March session was a first in the history of the Group. We tackled a ‘Life Drawing and Painting’ challenge. It proved to be a most enjoyable day. I emphasis ‘day’ because everyone was still painting after the time the session normally finishes, which was most encouraging.

Our tutor Seline, was an excellent teacher and a relaxed and understanding model. The whole atmosphere during the session was comfortable and business-like and much information about light and shade on the human form, body proportions etc. were taught with knowledge and skill. The session proved to be so successful that there was a unanimous request for her return at a later date, and she has agreed. It was testimony to the concentration of the members and the skill of the tutor that everyone went home with a completed piece of work.

Now for the present and future.

Thursday May 3rd We welcome an acknowledged pastelist, Jennifer Hockey.

Thursday June 7th A new addition to our tutor list is Penelope Hallam, a water colourist.

Thursday July 5th We have been generously invited by Paul and Sue Elliot to share in the beautiful surroundings of Corinium Villa for a session of plein air painting.

There will be no tutor on this day.

gallery 88 Well, here we are in the month of May and looking back on a busy three months of exhibitions.

Pat Chibnall’s display in February (how long ago that seems) followed by Doris Mitchell’s work in March and April’s exciting ‘Sand and Sea’ Leafy Sea Dragon exhibition. Each exhibition has been well attended with pleasing comments made by our many visitors and some welcome sales of work.

The month of May will see Marilyn Jelfs’ water-colour and pastel work on display, and like the previous exhibitions, well worth a viewing. Especially if you are looking for something a little different for that special person. All members of the gallery will have the opportunity to display their work in the foyer for a month and each exhibition will be well advertised locally and in the Press.

If anyone is not familiar with gallery 88, we are a community gallery providing space to display the work of local artists.

We have a selection of quality art and crafts to view and purchase: paintings (all medias), photographs, wood carvings, hand-made pens and letter openers, hand-painted cushions, traditional rag dolls, felt dolls and animals, silver jewelry, cards and magnets.

Why not come along and say Hello, bring your friends, you will be made most welcome.

rising water. Houses were on the move. As the water began to recede again, SPP turned, and the scene in front of us was reminiscent of the Aratiatia Rapids in full flood. Houses were coming down in the flood along with empty canoes, household items, wood, trees, washing...a little pig swam by, and then a partly submerged pig sty complete with 2 pigs on sharply sloping platform. In no time at all we were surrounded by so much debris we could almost walk across it. A woman and small boy sat in the back of our boat stunned and uncommunicative. I made tea for her and gave the little boy biscuits which he ate slowly.....gave him something to do. The end of the wharf outside the Gizo Hotel had parted company from the rest, and was floating out complete with BBQ style table and leaf umbrella. This looked quite incongruous, against this backdrop of utter devastation. Waterfalls appeared all along the town side of the harbour as water raced out of buildings and off the land.

We could immediately see the damage to buildings and small craft along the edge of the harbour. The water continued to recede until we had less than 7m again.

Reef and rock was visible once again. The dive boats across from us had fallen into the gap left by the water and were now wrecked. PT109 the Gizo yacht club wharf, gone and the building askew. The water emptied out and came back with corresponding surge maybe 3 or 4 times. After 2 hours from the start, and things seemed to be restored to a beautiful calm day albeit with devastation all around us, we decided it must all be over. The woman and child were collected by the husband, who reported his 'Grans' were dead, and there were 10 others in the village dead. All others had taken to the bush up the hill behind the village. By lunchtime, the debris was thinning in the inner harbour, but house roofs and other debris clearly visible just on the other side of the reef, along with the wharf, table, and umbrella.

Rainer decided to go ashore to see if he could clear out. I was not going anywhere!!!! Off he went, with VHF in his pocket.....next thing the fire engine is racing along the road with siren going. I could see through the binoculars people running, panicked. Where is Rainer? Then I could see him hurtling back towards the boat through all the debris and boats. Another wave is coming...this time 15m.

Two boats decide to make a run for it to open water, and we and 'Piper' decide to move to deeper water... 21 meters with a lot of chain out, but still within the harbour. All other coastal boats opted to do this too. We waited hardly breathing. Nothing happened??? The boats out in the Blackett Strait came back after about 4 hours and re anchored. Next day there were 2 more scares like that.

I went ashore for the first time on Wednesday and checked the damage. We volunteered to help at the hospital, which had been relocated to an open area up the hill and sheltered with tarpaulins. About 50 people with varied injuries. They ran out of essential medical supplies quite quickly, and 'Piper' gave them his generator to use. Government housing around by the jail was literally flattened, and there was some misdirected (I thought) concern about the housing of the jail inmates. The shops were closed, no bank, Post Office...anything. We knocked on the door of the only 'supermarket' and they let us in. We were able to buy some essential supplies like rice and flour etc. Their entire stock was on the floor, but not wet. It seemed they were letting people in one at a time....afraid of looting. Thursday, we found the Immigration Officer so we were able to clear out finally. Rainer had tracked down someone from Customs on the Wednesday.

We decided it was safer for us to leave now and go North even without a full compliment of stores. We saw boatloads of people arriving in Gizo probably looking for shelter and supplies.

Unfortunately, there is neither. Aid is just starting to arrive.

Water is also a big problem, and already there are cases of diarrhoea and anticipate cases of malaria etc. With the influx of mainly sullen looking males, hanging around waiting for someone to do something for them, we were out of there......

After an overnight sail, we arrived in the Shortland Islands yesterday afternoon. The mainly NW wind prevented us going to the Treasury Islands which was our original plan. There is a lot of damage here too. One of the local police men came to the boat last evening and we swapped stories. He says there are a lot of people still up in the hills too scared to come down, and the men won't go out fishing for fear of another wave.

We will wait now for wind with some South in it....wouldn't that be something, and head for Buka to clear in to PNG. We had another few rumbles this morning...the first at 6am which got us out of bed. Measuring it against our experience on Monday, we went back to bed and slept some more.

Rainer says we have become blase??

Anyway, we are both very OK., although a little twitchy about some boat motion and noises. The boat is also OK. Some marks down the side as we were side swiped by large debris, nothing.....

We regret causing such anxiety to our family and friends.....when something like this happens everyone feels so isolated and completely helpless, including us. AUSTRALIA here we come!!!!!! (at the end of the cyclone season of course...we don't need any of those!).

Meet the R-5 SRC Members e welcome the new members of the Junior School Student Representative Council that have been elected by their peers to serve the needs of the students. They have been chosen for their sense of responsibility, con fiden ce, organization skills, team spirit and ability to speak up for others. We wish them well in their endeavours this year.

Meetings will begin in term two.

Already a pura tap has been installed in the junior primary area from money raised by the students last year. This will give a clean and ready supply of drinking water for all students in that area. There is

one in the triple block that was installed early last year for the year 3-5 students.

Students will meet once a fortnight to discuss and work on any issues raised by their respective classes and to plan school events that can include assemblies and fund raising activities.

We thank these students for being so willing to help their school community.

SAPSASA BASKETBALL SUCCESS n week 10 students from years 5,6 and 7 represented the School

The SRC team: Melanie, Jasmine, Jo, Bonnie, Shimon, Ally, Alec, Ryan, Phil, Sam, Emma, Craig, Jack, Absent Emma in basketball held at Morphett Vale over 2 days. There were 3 teams in all. The students were fortunate enough to have the experience of former YAS student Tracey Beatty (nee Braithwaite) from the Canberra Capitals. Tracey coached the children and gave them valuable advice throughout the day. Each team played four games against other schools from Willunga, McLaren Vale, Victor Harbor and Aberfoyle Hub. It was a wonderful way of participating in a community event. There was a sea of blues and greens as we were ably led by the huge sea dragon puppets. Myponga students also joined in on the fun and spirit of the event. Year 2/3 class recount: Today we had a Leafy Sea Dragon Parade. All of the Junior School, year six and seven as well as Myponga Primary School dressed up. We walked to the Aged Care Centre or the Senior Citz.

First we lined up on the oval and then we went to the aged care centre. We sang a song called Octopus’s Garden about five times.

Other classes showed some fishes, lanterns and three dragons.

The old people really enjoyed our singing. They smiled and clapped.

oing business as or with an Independent Contractor?

It has been quite an issue for a number of years as to who can reliably be classified as a contractor rather than an employee. To be on an employment contract, does not make someone an independent contractor. A genuine business contractor arrangement can have benefits for one or both parties over the traditional employer employee, but it is also open to legal ambiguity, abuse or even just the complexity of overlapping state and federal law. There are a host of issues such as tax, insurance and employment conditions that effect or determine whether the arrangement is legitimate or just a bit of a sham.

Recent changes in the law go some of the way to putting consistency into the relationship and clarifying the legal situation from a business and employment perspective. Remember though, the arrangement still needs to pass muster from other considerations such as tax and insurance.

There is a neat little comparison sheet available which defines the difference between contractors and employees as a 19 point test. I can send or email one to you.

So, all those quandaries over owner-drivers, outworkers, unfair contracts, leave, liability, insurance, etc, etc can start to be sorted.

Road ‘improvement’ a disaster waiting to happen

hadow Minister for Tourism and Member for Finniss Michael Pengilly says Transport Minister Conlon must immediately investigate the bungling of the so-called ‘improvement’ of Main South Road at Sellicks Hill.

“The original idea of a passing lane on the long stretch of rising road going up Sellicks Hill did have merit,” Mr Pengilly said.

“But motorists driving at the 100 kmh speed limit were being frustrated by heavy vehicles and visitors driving more leisurely.

“Thousands of dollars were spent creating a passing lane and then what happened?

“Some bright spark in the Transport Department decided the whole stretch wasn’t safe enough for 100 kmh driving, and lowered the speed limit to 80 kmh!

“This means that using the passing lane for its intended purpose of allowing traffic to flow and

overtake slower vehicles, may push drivers to break the speed limit in an effort to pass slower traffic.

“The suburbs south of Adelaide are some of the fastest growing areas in the state but the south is being forgotten by this government.

“Despite there being a Minister for the Southern Suburbs the area is being paid nothing but lip service by the Rann Government.

“All that’s been achieved is the creation of another stretch of road where frustrated drivers might take chances which could result in fatal accidents.

“Minister Conlon should demand an explanation for this laughable outcome and the total incompetence it shows, haul those responsible over the coals, and allocate funds immediately to improve the road surface to allow it to once again qualify for 100 kmh classification.”

ell here we are in May and the Easter long weekend is well and truly behind, We were reasonably quiet having only four incidents to attend to.

This was very surprising considering the number of craft that launched. Going on marina figures this was the busiest weekend for over twelve months, but wasn’t the weather delightful. If it can’t rain for the poor old farmers it may as well be good living weather.

Of the four incidents , one poor chap had a fish hook in his finger which required first aid another ran out of fuel, and a large twin engine cruiser lost one motor and was running very low on fuel. I am happy to say

We were put on stand-by as Sea Rescue 1 was in the area and towed the craft back to O’Sullivans Beach ramp.

There are some very inconsiderate people in this World and a couple showed their colours over the Easter week End. We went to the trouble on Easter Thursday to place bunting and no parking signs at each end of our boat shed and guess what????

On Good Friday two vehicles parked in front of the Southern door way making it impossible to leave or enter from this direction. One vehicle only stayed the day the other was securely locked, and stayed there the whole Easter period. I am quite aware that parking in this part of the Marina

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB

he sailing season finished at the end of April and will not resume until October. It’s time to put away the boats and carry out any essential maintenance over the colder months. Over Easter, several clubs from Adelaide joined us and we managed to field over 20 boats.

It may have looked wonderful from the shore to see all those beautiful boats, but from a sailor’s perspective it was a frustrating day.

The early morning northerlies had all but died out by racing time and progress was painfully slow out on the water. Several boats dropped out of the race, with Dave Carragher being seen to be paddling back to the shore (how did he get to be carryin g a paddle?).

Unfortunately he lost the paddle but it was picked up by another

competitor who put it to good use, leaving Dave stranded. Stuart Gibbs managed to end up going in circles with virtually no wind to either power the boat or help to control it, and was rescued by his wife who valiantly swam out to drag it back in. Those who continued to race did manage to pick up some wind further offshore, but only one race was held due to the very slow conditions.

At the time of going to press the Club Championships had yet to be decided, but it looked like being a close contest between Darcy Wedd, Peter Nicholson and Alan Fehlberg in the catamaran class, and Dave Herraman was leading in the dinghy class in the Club Sabre. It has been good to see Ian McDonald sailing in his Windrush and we

hope he will join the Club. We were also very pleased to see Mary Bagshaw return on Easter Sunday after her unfortunate, freak accident earlier in the season.

Next issue we will include some reflections on the season past. On behalf of all the sailing members of the Club, I would sincerely like to thank the others who work to help

make the sport more safe by operating the rescue boat, Steve Rogers and Gavin Schubert, as well as Marg Richter who is the all important time keeper for the races.

We look forward to the presentation night later in the year and to new beginnings in October.

y the time this edition of the Yank News is printed the club will be slowing down for the winter season of bowls involving Muftis on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Also Tranmere Bowling Club will have visited and the Leafy Sea Dragon Mixed Fours contested.

The Pennant season for men’s bowls was slightly disappointing with both red teams being omitted during the finals. However, the ladies top team kept the flag flying for the club capping off a great season - congratulations to all our lady bowlers. This time of the year is when some of our bowlers and their wives migrate to warmer climates for a few months to relax but you can bet the bowls bag is amongst the luggage somewhere.

The migration this year commences at Shepparton in Victoria on the 7th May for three days, and is known as the Meat Traders Association

Recently, a working day was held to replant areas of the field destroyed by reckless hoons driving on the grounds last year. “DIPPER” AUSKICKS “DIPPER” Comes to Yank for the Future of Country Football. There was a buzz of excitement around the Yankalilla Football Club, last Thursday night the 19th of April.

You could feel the tension building as it turned 5 o’clock and Aus Kick ambassador “Dipper” was due to arrive. The Kids all ready and waiting, playing footy and very excited about the up coming event. When Dipper arrived he went straight out to the kids, larger than life, but very down to earth. He started to organise the kids, into groups. Then went on to teach, lead and also told the kids it's all about having fun. He went on to take training through the ranks from juniors to seniors.

As the night progressed Dipper made his way up to the Clubrooms, Chatting with locals, about his life and achievements in Football. All that attended had a great laugh he was very entertaining and bought a very positive can do attitude to the Club. Overall it was a success and it was great to see so many Families in attendance.

ur season has come to an end and we have had a successful one this year. We were able to fill 4 junior teams and 1 senior team. Our Division 2 and Division 4 juniors both made the top 2 but unfortunately lost their matches and both finished 3rd on the ladder, great effort. Our Division 3 senior team made the finals also and were lucky enough to make the Grand Final only to draw on the Saturday and unable to field a team on the Sunday, had to forfeit, hence coming runners-up.

At the Association Presentation Night two of our juniors from Division 2 were rewarded for the great season they have had. Aaron King won Sportsperson Award for Div 1, 2 and 3 juniors

and Will Jensen won Most Consistent for Div 2.

The Club was awarded the Brian Lienert Memorial Club Award for being the most successful small club with 6 teams or less. Great achievement for everyone involved.

Night Tennis had a difficult season with teams finding it hard to get fill-ins. Some great tennis and fun was had. Unfortunately the Grand Final was washed out so the teams that were top were deemed as winners. Congratulations to Decades apart and Raqueteers. NEW PUBLICATIONS Climate Change in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Region is a new publication which looks at the impacts of climate change on Natural Resource Management in our region. The publication outlines projected climate change in our region by 2030 including gre enhouse gas e missio n s, temperature, rainfall and environmental change. It then goes on to suggest that those sectors which are likely to be most vulnerable to climate change are those which are not intensively managed by people, such as native biodiversity conservation and coastal systems. The brochure outlines the potential impact of climate change on subsectors in each of Water, Land, Biodiversity

and Coasts using a vulnerability index which reflects the potential impacts of projected climate change and our capacity to adapt to change. The brochure concludes with some suggestions for our region in responding to climate change. If you have an interest in climate change, this brochure provides an excellent overview of its possible impacts on natural resources at a local level in an easy to read format. Pest Management Strategy – Draft Strategy March 2007 – The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board is in the process of adopting a new strategy to manage the pests of the region. As part of this process the Board has developed a draft pest management strategy for review by the community. The Board will be receiving comments on the draft strategy until May 23, 2007. We have copies of this draft strategy at the centre so if this is an area of interest to you, please drop in and collect a copy.

ANIMAL MATTERS CARING FOR THE ELDERLY DOG

n the last few years of their life dogs undergo a variety of physical and metabolic changes w h i c h ma y c a u s e t he m discomfort or a change in their behaviour. Their senses of sight, hearing and smell may be dulled.

Metabolism may slow, their immune system may become less effective and arthritis may affect their joints. There is an increased risk of disorders such as heart disease and cancer. This does not mean that they have to have a decreased enjoyment of life or necessarily a shorter life. It just means that we should be aware of the likelihood of changes and find out whether alterations to their lifestyle can be made or medications given to improve the

quality of life.

Blindness and deafness can occur in older dogs, much as they can in humans. Dogs tend to get a change in the lens of the eye that alters the structure of the proteins. This distorts them so that the light can no longer be directly transmitted through.

Dogs rarely go completely blind, but even if they do, they still have other senses to assist them in understanding their environment.

Their sense of smell and feel is far more acute than our own. The whiskers around the muzzle also assist in perception.

Deafness occurs because the tiny bones lying on the ear drum tend to calcify and “seize up”, preventing reaction to fine vibrations of the ear drum and hence transmission of sound.

The brain may undergo changes that result in cognitive decline.

Cognition includes spatial orientation, housetraining, and recognizing and reacting to h u ma n f a mi l y me mb e r s .

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome is an age-related deterioration of mental acuity characterized by behavioural changes in dogs. It cannot be wholly ascribed to medical conditions such as tumours, infection or organ failure. CDS often is referred to as "senility" and is manifested by one or more of the following signs in the absence of any physical cause: 1. Disorientation/ confusion - the dog may wander aimlessly and appear confused,

getting stuck in corners or staring into space.

2.

Decreased responsivene ss to fa mily members – it seeks attention less often and is less likely to stand for petting. It no longer greets family members.

3.

Disturbances of the sleep-wake cycle – it sleeps more during the day and less at night, barking at night for no reason.

4.

Deterioration in housetraining urinating indoors, even soon after being outside, or does not ask to go outside.

The progressive, degenerative course of this syndrome involves a gradual decline producing dysfunction in the home or as a family member.

Whilst this sounds fairly grim, there are treatments for this syndrome which have been successful, and involve generating a better oxygen supply to the brain.

Degenerative joint disease and arthritis may afflict most animals, causing pain in the joints, stiffness and reduction of movement. Much research has been done on arthritis and treatments, and there are plenty of options to make pets more comfortable.

These include moderating the amount of exercise.

Consistent regular exercise keeps the joints mobile and supple. The dog should be kept as slender as possible, whilst maintaining good muscle mass, so that there is no excess weight hanging on sore joints. Some foods are better than others in providing nutrition for healthy joints.

There are also food supplements that specifically address requirements for joints.

Anti inflammatory medications can provide immense and

welcome relief from persistent pain and there are medications that help to stimulate the cells of the joints to produce better joint fluid and lubrication.

A dog ages 7 physiological years for each actual year. The annual veterinary check up is important for detecting subtle changes in health.

Many problems can either be stopped in their tracks if detected early, or else their progress can be modified to allow for better overall health and comfort.

asn't it been busy times for us all. Easter and the "Leafy Sea Dragon Festival" I hope the local clubs and business' are feeling a little fuller for it all!

Kirkaldy Park ODE was held on the 17th and 18th March. Ryan and 'Jo' came in 8th in Pre Novice. Jeri attended as her 1st preliminary event. She came in 7th - missing out on a ribbon by .10 of a point.

Our April rally was held at the grounds on April 1. It was great weather and a fantastic day. Jen, Yvonne and Sally took groups of novelties and flat work. Glenys came and took 3 groups for jumping lessons in the morning thank you Glenys! Ryan came in and took the last group for jumping in the afternoon. I'd like to take this op p or t u n i t y t o t h a n k o u r instructors, who volunteer their time in all weather to keep the rally days informative and fun for our members. Lauren, Amy and Katrina took control of the canteen

in my absence - so thank you to them as well.

Some of our members were not present - attending Clare Valley Horse Trials instead. Denise took a truck load again - Carly with 'Ceris', Bella and 'Blue', Christine and 'Snap' and Kat with 'Darkie'.

The Yeates Family came along with Kev at the helm - Anthea riding 'Meg' and Alana on 'Molly'.

The legendary Libby was there with 'sly', and Nat rode 'Paladin' with Jenny helping her all the way.

Everyone went well - completing everything. Libby and 'Sly' cleaned up inAL2 coming home with the rug. Nat came in 2nd in AL1. Carly was 4th in PC4. Alana was 3rd, Bella 4th, and Kat 8th in PC5.

Anthea was 11th and Christine 13th in AL5. It was a good weekend for everyone!

Cathy Willis held a 'Natural Horsemanship Clinic' at the grounds on April 14th and 15th.

Participants were treated to a

holistic approach to horsemanship.

Learning how to treat their animals in a gentle calm manner - learning to think like a horse. Yvonne attended with both CC and Thomas and found it a very rewarding experience. Well done Cathy.

CrandCru Horse Trials was also held on this weekend. Ryan took 'Wally' and 'Jo'; Libby took 'Sly' and Jeri was there with 'Petros'.

Libby cleaned up again in preliminary - another rug for her.

The gal is on fire!!!! Jeri came in 7th - just missing out on a ribbon.

Ryan and 'Wally' were 3rd with a spectacular cross country round in 1 star. Ryan and 'Jo' were 6th in pre novice. Well done all of you!

Glenys Hayman hosted more Megan Jones Cross Country Clinics on the 16th and 30th of April. Megan is a 5 star rider and her knowledge and instruction is most valuable to all those who are able to attend. It really is a fantastic opportunity for all those who are

able to attend.

May Rally will be held on the 6th.

This will be a special rally held at the Hayman property at Inman Valley. Thank you very much Glenice. This is a very generous opportunity for our members to try their hand at cross-country obstacles. Our committee will be working very hard to ensure all of our members are able to get there.

This is a fun horsy event for all those able to attend. BYO everything.

Mobile messages

o you have problems with mobile phones - like forgetting to switch it on or charge the battery or being out of range?

I sometimes forget where I leave it. I stayed with folk once and lost my mobile in their house. After almost giving up trying to find it, some one said, ‘Try dialling it’s number.’ We did – and heard it ring.

The down side to mobiles is the arrival of the bill. They can be very expensive for those who don’t know when to hang up.

Something odd Recently I dialled a number and heard the ring tones and then it was blank. I dialled again and it did the same. I tried another number – then another and each time I heard nothing.

Later some one said, ‘Did you try and phone me?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ They said, ‘We could hear you, but you weren’t hearing us.’ Time and again I tried the ‘phone and, not a word did I hear.

Something had gone wrong.

They were hearing me but I wasn’t hearing them.

A wider problem This kind of problem isn’t restricted to mobile phones. My wife often says, ‘You haven’t heard a word I said.’ She hears me but I don’t hear her. Every now and then she says, ‘Now, what did I say?’ That’s when she discovers the fact that I was thinking about my own things and not listening to her.

We let others down when we don’t listen - particularly when what they wish to tell us something important.

The Bible says: ‘Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak…’ James 1:19 Let’s sharpen our listening skills and hear what our kids, spouses, workmates and friends want to tell us.

A privilege Some people hear nothing at all – they’re deprived of the privilege of hearing.

The gift of hearing is priceless and what a multitude of marvelous sounds there are. I love going out at day break and listening to God’s musicians. In the distance I hear roosters crow and then the warble of magpies, the calls of finches, parrots and other birds. Later in the day at the farm, I’m enraptured when a lone magpie sits in a branch of a nearby tree and warbles softly – as if musing to itself.

I like being in the Coolawang gully and hearing the beautiful whistles of the thrushes as they call to each other. Another soothing sound in that area is the water of the creek as it runs over the rocks on its way to the sea.

Purpose A favourite saying of Jesus was: ‘He who has ears, let him hear.’

What’s the point of being able to hear if we don’t listen? We have two ears and one tongue.

Perhaps that indicates the proportion of their use – listen

twice as much as you speak.

President Lyndon Johnson kept a plaque on his desk to remind him of something very important. It read: You ain’t learnin’ a thing when you’re d o i n ’ al l t h e ta l ki n g. ’ Conversation is very informative – if we’re listening!

What we say is what we know.

What we hear is what we learn.

Sympathetic listening is therapeutic for those who struggle with disappointment and grief. An empathetic ear allows them to share their heart break and know that someone understands.

Superficial listening is insulting.

Listen well and hear what people are trying to say. If we expect others to listen to us surely we should listen to them.

Listen to God When Jesus said, ‘He who has ears let him hear,’ he was referring to what he had to say.

We need to listen to the right people – those who are professional in their field and know what they’re talking about.

Jesus had very special things to tell us and we must ever be grateful to those who heard him and passed it on.

His ‘Sermon on the Mount’ is a priceless gem of literature. I had the privilege of climbing the hill where that life changing talk was given. I was captivated by the beauty of Lake Galilee and its surrounds. The aesthetics of

the place were the perfect setting for those priceless sayings that we call the Beatitudes. The little group that I had joined handed me a New Testament and asked me to read them to them. What a privilege to read these priceless words right near the spot where Jesus spoke from.

The Wesleyan Church had erected a commemoration stone there which included the words: ‘Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.’ If you haven’t yet read the Sermon on the Mount take time to do so. It’s found in the gospel of Matthew, chapters five to seven. And then reward yourself with a careful reading of the gospels.

One of my favourite verses that came from the lips of Jesus is found in John’s gospel chapter 5 verse 24. He said. ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.’

The disciples of Jesus once said to their great teacher: ‘You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.’ John 6:68-70 ‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear.’

A

re you aware that a small building in our little community is moving towards a significant celebration? On Saturday, 7 July, Christ Church will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding. Our church has been here in this community since the very early days of this district. That’s not to say that people, other than the traditional land owners, were not here before the township of Yankalilla was mapped out and our church built. We know there were pastoralists were here with several stations established. What is significant is that this tiny church has stood the test of time. It has survived where others have failed. And I believe it is the oldest church in the district.

Our faith community is resilient and, if the present congregation is any indication, it has been a warm and welcoming church with a strong tradition of orthodox worship and pastoral ministry. It is true that it has weathered storms, but what church or faith has not?

There are two old windows in Christ Church that are significant. One is the Beare family memorial. The other, of the same design, is dedicated to the pioneers of the district. These are a reflection of the place of the church in the rural society of the Yankalilla of bygone days.

We are truly blessed. God has given us a beautiful setting for our town. The surrounding countryside reflects God’s creative power. We can see it through all the seasonal changes and we can see it in a different light every day of our lives. New beauties are revealed. The hills, valleys, beaches, and sea change as the light varies and, when God graces us with rain, we are blessed with growth wherever we look.

Much has happened since those early days.

Farming practices have changed. We now have several vineyards and olive groves. More recently, Yankalilla has been ‘discovered’, or should I say, rediscovered. With Carrickalinga

and Normanville, it has become firstly a holiday destination and now a developing residential and resort area. The number of approved building applications is astounding. And, while people may not actually be flooding into the area as permanent residents, many are making life-style changes and coming here to life.

Through all these changes Christ Church, the Anglican Church in Yankalilla, continues to minister to the people of the area. It is the only Anglican community in the YankalillaNormanville-Carrickalinga triangle. If you are new to the area and are looking for somewhere to worship our doors are open to welcome you.

Don’t be deterred by stories you may have heard of the recent past. That, as far as the congregation is concerned, IS a thing of the past.

We’ve put it behind us and we are moving on.

More importantly we are looking to a much brighter future.

Yankalilla Centre ACH Group & Worthwhile Community Projects

O

n Saturday 10th March, if you were shopping in the Normanville Mall you might have met residents, 2 volunteers of Yankalilla Centre, Coralie & Margaret, & me, who worked at our stall on that day. It was mid February when we saw the Salvos Drought Appeal on TV & someone suggested a trading table to help raise funds. .From there on in it snowballed with ACH Group residents, relatives, staff & volunteers baking cakes, donating produce and plants etc. John Jelfs kindly allowed us to utilise the mall and Mitre 10 loaned us two trestle tables on the day. By 1 pm on the Saturday we were just about sold out & at final count we had raised $458.60 for the drought appeal. Out thanks to the wonderful people who donated goods & to the community for supporting us on the day.

Two weeks later on the weekend of 24th & 25th March we were off to Victor Harbor.

We had entered a team of 12 in the Relay for Life – a 20 hour overnight walk to honour cancer survivors & remember those who had lost their battle with cancer whilst as the same time raising public awareness & funds for cancer research. It was just 6 weeks earlier when we, staff & residents tossed the idea around & decided to give it ago. Our team emerged – 3 residents (who have lost family members or have family members fighting cancer), 1 volunteer, our intrepid handyman & 7 staff of ACH Group Yankalilla Centre. When the residents, Coralie and I arrived at Victor Oval at 1 pm the rest of the team had the campsite up, decorated & looking fantastic. At 2 pm the team resplendent in our purple “Relay for Life” T-shirts were led off by three courageous ladies who happen to be three of our wonderful volunteers & themselves cancer survivors. Later there was a very poignant & emotional candle lit memorial service & entertainment throughout the night, but all the time one or more of the team were walking around the oval. Finally at 9 am Sunday morning all the team cheered themselves over the last lap – our pedometer showed we had walked 160 klms in total – we were all so very tired but elated to have walked the 20 hours & raised

$1294.00 in the process. So thankyou again to all who sponsored us – residents, families, staff, volunteers & local businesses. To our “brilliant, wonderful team” – thanks a million.

It was fun, a lot of laughs & a real talking point for the ACH Group Yankalilla Centre residents who played an integral part on both the relay & the trading table.

We the residents and staff of Yankalilla Centre are looking forward to participating in the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival; - see you there.

unyara is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of healing’.

Twenty-four Carers and support staff attended a retreat at Nunyara, Belair and are still talking about their experiences. Morning tea at Pt Elliot followed by a barbeque lunch at Clayton, set the scene for four memorable days.

Arriving at Nunyara, Carers were treated to more pampering, from music to massages, food to facials. Other activities included walking, playing tennis, playing cards and board games, knitting, reading or just relaxing on the verandah overlooking Adelaide. There was an impromptu pyjama party that shocked Janis (the co-ordinator) but gave the group a good laugh. There were bus trips to places of interest, in the area, and shopping excursions to Blackwood. The Op shops did a roaring trade! It was nice to have seven Carers (the Magnificent Seven) from Yankalilla in the group and a number of first timers to a

retreat. Many met for the first time and new friendships have been forged whilst old friendships have been renewed amongst the group.

For Carers in the Yankalilla and surrounding area there is a group called TimeOUT. The group ``meet on the first Tuesday of each month, at 12 noon, in the CWA Hall, Yankalilla. The group would welcome Carers from Cape Jervis to Myponga and areas in-between. The group enjoy laughing and learning from each other and on a serious note are currently making interesting comment on the new Carers Legislation.

In Ephesians 3:8 the Apostle Paul wrote of ‘the unsearchable riches of Christ’.

h e C h r i st i a n W or l d ’ s celebration of Easter has come and gone. Jesus Christ was the central figure of those celebrations; a man who had truly the greatest influence on humanity? Do you really believe dear reader that he actually existed and accomplished all the Bible says of him? Lets look at this over several additions.

A nineteenth century writer, Robert Roberts wrote in his opening paragraph in a book entitled `Nazareth Revisited' – `Whatever view may be taken of Jesus Christ he cannot be excluded from history. he is not a legend, or a superstition, or a theory that may be brushed aside lightly. He is one of those `stubborn things' that men call facts. an indelible impression on history in all lands' I don't think many could dispute that. He is not a myth, he is `a fact' of history . Just let the mind sweep backward through history and he towers the most conspicuous.

Every Church, every Christian Sect, at least 1.5 billion of the human race agree. Every dated document is a constant reminder of the years that have rolled over mankind since his birth.

It is because of this that it seems anomalous that the records of his life are ever so brief. There are only 2 historical records of his life.

Both quite small, insignificant in a way, compared to biographies of other men. There's the biblical record of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John penned by the men who lived and worked with him and eventually died testifying of him.

The other writing (perhaps spurious) is only a brief paragraph by the Jewish Historian Josephus who lived around the Lord’s time.

Why then did he have such a great influence on humanity? Was it because of the great feats he performed? Stilling a storm, multiplying bread, discerning the thoughts of men, resurrecting the dead!

What has brought about such renown? Was it because he became such a controversial figure? After all its true to say there wouldn’t be a more controversial figure; no one more talked about, wondered at, warred over, loved or loathed even a stumbling block to his fellow countrymen, the Jews.

His greatness was not associated surely with his humble beginnings. He wasn't an eminent scientist with formal university education; he was no wealthy aristocrat, he was born in a stable!

He conquered no lands, he was not an explorer; he never travelled more than a 300 kilometre radius from where he was born; he was no historian, no revolutionary - he died a condemned criminal. It is also quite remarkable that he being a Jew is yet so eminent. I say this because men are nationalistic. We elevate and revere great men and woman of our nationality. Speak of Alex the Great and a Macedonian will brim with pride.

But how many Jews want to recognise Jesus Christ. They don't want to know him (except for a small number of Christian Jews).

He claimed to be their deliverer,

their Messiah, their King but this they reject, and they vigorously persecuted the men that preached him to the world in the 1st century. Despite this, the anomaly is, he's the biggest figure in their history as well as the world's.

Why? There are a number of reasons, not the least being that his Father God intended that he be the central figure in all history.

Putting this aside for the moment and looking at the question from a purely human perspective. I believe it is because his life and works impinged upon the great human question of all ages! What happens to me when I die? His teachings deal with this; they deal with personal behaviour, reward, the meaning of existence, the destiny and purpose of human life and these are at the very heart of human existence. Because every human being will have to face up to these issues, they have to come to some decision in regard to Jesus Christs claims. To be informed you are dying or you are going to lose a loved one, causes every one to question life; its purpose; death seems too final; too hard, too cruel to accept. Jesus Christ dealt with these issues and therefore he's forever a force for consideration.

Also there are two outstanding things in the recorded life of Jesus Christ apart from miracle that have made him great. His teachings and his application of them. In other words the applied wisdom of his life! He was able to do what no other before or since was able to achieve, the complete control of self. King Solomon was reputed to be wise but he acknowledged the difficulty of this when he wrote in the Proverbs 16:32 `He that masters his spirit is mightier than he who by war can capture a city' Mastery of spirit. Perfect mastery of spirit, of human nature. How was Jesus Christ able to do this when no others before him or after him have achieved this degree of mastery?

This we will consider next month as we continue to examine the uniqueness and greatness of Jesus Christ.

hrist Church, the tiny Anglican Church that sits in the middle of the village of Yankalilla has been exercising a ministry in the district since 1857. This year, on Saturday, 7 July, we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding.

This church has stood the test of time and has, no doubt, weathered many storms. It is one of the only two Anglican churches that are still open out of the several that were built in the district.

Christ Church is an historic church, listed by the National Trust, and a beautiful part of the whole fabric of Yankalilla. It is something to be treasured.

Inside the church there are reminders of the early settlers: the pioneer and Beare windows.

Other windows, ornaments and organ have been dedicated to the memory of past clergy and devoted workers for the church and the community. Christ Church is a parish church ministering to the needs of the communities of Yankalilla, Normanville and Carrickalinga.

Individual floral arrangements will be for sale. This has always been a very popular event and an important fundraiser for St John Ambulance Service this year, the arrangements will be created in the supper room at the Agricultural Hall, Main Rd Yankalilla on Friday 11th May.

The image of Our Lady and the dedication of her Shrine have made Christ Church a focal for healing and prayers for the sick.

This is a broad ministry reaching people of other churches, faiths and nationalities. The ministry of the Shrine continues.

Our celebrations on 7 July will begin with a Eucharist at 10:00am, con-celebrated by the Bishop of the Murray, Bishop Ross Davies, and the present parish priest, Fr, Chris St. John.

The Rector of Strathalbyn, Fr. Trevor Jackson, will be the guest preacher. Following the Eucharist, there will be the opening of an exhibition of the religious art of Barbara Robertson by Mark Pearse.

Our members were very pleased to have the Myponga and Yankalilla Area School students arrive at our Rose Garden and join with our members for Leafy Sea Dragon festivities, and perform for us. Thank you to all staff, parents and students, it was a great time for all.

Senior Citizens Op Shop We appreciate what is donated to our Club this enables us to give back to the community in different ways, with the major project, the upgrade of the old cottage and Op Shop. April has been a record month and we do thank the people who have donated items and have patronised our Op Shop in April, especially through Easter. Best seen in the temperate waters off South Australia, the Leafy Sea Dragon attracts divers from all over the world who come to see the delicate fish, related to the seahorse, in its natural environment. Fleurieu Peninsula. This is the second time the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival event has been held with the inaugural event in 2005 attracting more than 7000 visitors.

Meander Cottages Opening eander Cottages at Yankalilla had its official opening at on Sunday 15th April.

The first cottage had the ribbon cut and a tree planted by Mayor Whitford followed by an open day with refreshments throughout.

The Meander Cottages is Yankalilla's first retirement village which will hopefully keep some of our retirees in the district rather than seeing them head over to Victor Harbor or elsewhere.
