i everyone!

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers and grandmothers out there. Those of you looking for a lovely bunch of flowers for the occasion should visit the Normanville Shopping Centre on Saturday 13th May for the annual St John Auxiliary flower stall.

We went to press before Anzac Day, so we will have a report next issue. Could this have been the last Anzac Day at the current R&SL Hall? Moves are afoot to amalgamate with the Yankalilla Football Club. Details of this proposal is on page 29.

The Rapid Bay Jetty is still on the government agenda, and they keep talking about it, but talk is all they seem to do, even though there was a promise to rebuild the jetty just prior to the recent elections by the State Government.

The TV reception debate has reared its ugly head again with more letters to the editor this month, from locations across the area. Is it, or is it not, Council’s problem to fix? That seems to depends on who you ask.

The take-away food scene in Normanville has had a major upheaval in the last month.

After 10 years in the Marina Take-Away,

Karen has sold the business. She is now enjoying her retirement and remains in the area. Stephen, the new owner, took over on the Wednesday before Easter but was unable to trade due to unforeseeable delays in the legal processes of the sale. At the time of press, Monday 24th April, it was still closed.

The other take-away businesses made the most of the school holidays although were stretched to capacity. Another of the takeaway businesses, Moss Rock Café, also changed hands in the past week.

n Sunday 21st May the Normanville Bushwalkers will be conducting an A grade walk in the Onkaparinga Gorge led by Andy Mitchell. We will be departing from the Mitre 10 carpark, Normanville, at 10.00am or you can meet us the McLaren Vale Visitor Centre at 10.45am. This will be a more strenuous walk but please don’t be put off – you will be in good company if you take your time, and there will be plenty of rest stops.

CAPE JERVIS TERMINAL BOOSTS SEALINK

B

usiness is booming at Sealink Travel Group’s new ferry passenger terminal at Cape Jervis.

In the three months since the terminal opened in December last year, bookings from Cape Jervis have risen by about 15%, with revenues in February alone up 28% on the previous year.

A new Travel Consultant and a Terminal Liaison Consultant had recently been appointed at Cape Jervis to assist visitors and passengers.

The new $2 million, 300 square metre passenger terminal includes a reception and checkin area, visitor information services, undercover seating for up to 100 people, toilets and souvenir sales.

remiership Season 2006 ‘kicked’ off on Saturday 8th April, with 3 hard fought losses against Strathalbyn at Strathalbyn. The Reserves side had a great fighting win. Well done guys.

SOCIAL CLUB NEWS Adelaide’s Comix Comedy Cellar is coming to Yankalilla.

This is the same show you would need to drive to Adelaide for and pay more money to see.

Well known comic, Dave Flanagan is the proprietor of A.C.C.C. and if anybody has heard Dave on Triple M, you will know he is a very funny man.

The Football Club is attempting to bring city shows to the country, but we cannot do this without your support. Why not

organize your friends and rellies and book a table early. This will enable us to cater and setup for the show and also gauge interest early. If this show is well attended, it will be the start to the future booking of variety shows by the Club. If not then in the future, we will not attempt to cater for the local community in bringing such entertainment to the area.

PS – The meal alone is probably worth the $$’s for the ticket!!

FLEURIEU SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCERS

ur branch continues to flourish, new members joining now and again. We continue to get at least 8 or more dancers every Thursday evening. Recently Fiona joined our branch and also for a couple of months Yvonne, a visitor from England came to our classes. Apart from our teacher Margaret Campbell, two dancers have been with the group since it started 20 years ago in the R.S.L. hall. Margaret Armstrong and Vivien Hobbs are still enjoying dancing each week. We are hoping to have a party in October, inviting dancers from other classes around Adelaide to join us, and celebrate 20 years. For more information on our dancing class ring Margaret on 85582813.

In March we went to the Port Noarlunga Hotel for a meal and then on to the Noarlunga Arts Centre for the play "Murdered to death". This was a good production of a comedy whodunit. On Sunday April 30th, we have arranged another "tag a long" these have proved to be very popular in the past. We are going around the Battunga country this time taking our own morning tea but having lunch at a hotel, the 3 Brothers at Maccesfield during the trip. It's a bit of a mystery trip and also a quiz along the way.

In May we are going to Broken Hill, using our rail passes. We will be staying in a motel while there. WASTE TRANSFER STATION AT YANKALILLA

T

he District Council of Yankalilla have resolved to build and operate a waste transfer station at the existing Yankalilla Landfill Depot.

The existing Yankalilla Landfill cell which is being used for waste disposal will be full to capacity before the end of 2006. This has necessitated the need for Council to decide on a future option for waste disposal.

The council has spent months investigating the best option to manage its district’s solid mixed waste. Council staff have visited waste depots in the Adelaide Hills, Mount Barker, Strathalbyn and Lonsdale. They have also met with other councils, EPA officers, Solo Waste Management and interested people in the Yankalilla community.

In a report to Council, Rod Kleemann, Council’s Environmental Health Officer, recommended a waste transfer station be built and operated and that council allocate funds in its next budget.

“This is the only viable possibility to provide a local waste sorting, storage and transfer facility,” Mr Kleemann said.

After considering alternative options, Mr Kleemann told Council he believed a waste transfer station would fit with the overall regional waste strategy.

Part of the regional waste management strategy is for each council to have its own waste transfer station with a new regional landfill depot, but that is some years away.

“The immediate short-term requirement of each regional council at present is considering how to handle solid mixed waste from their communities,” Mr Kleemann said.

At its meeting Thursday 10th March 2006, Council agreed to include the cost of a waste transfer station in its 2006/07 budget.

The Regional Waste Strategy Committee member councils include Alexandrina Council, City of Victor Harbor, Kangaroo Island Council and the District Council of Yankalilla.

We had quite a lot of business to discuss as we did not have a meeting in March. However, we managed to get through this fairly quickly. Members were asked to think about donating to the Innisfail Hurricane Appeal, and whether school-children should be taught how to dial 000 in an emergency and respond to questions. These matters will be dealt with more fully at a future meeting.

Mrs. Heather Clarke was our Speaker this month. She showed us a video of New Zealand and told us about her visit to that beautiful country. Some of us expressed a wish to go to New Zealand one day; now we long to go there more than ever. It’s hard to believe that so much spectacular scenery could be contained in such a small country. Heather was thanked and presented with a lovely Begonia plant in appreciation Our next meeting is on the 3rd May. May is A.C.W.W. Cape Jervis Community Club News

T

he first pool competition for the year between the Community Club and the Cape Jervis Tavern was held on at the end of March. Unfortunately no team from the Pub appeared but a lively comp between members of the Club made for great entertainment, followed by a wonderful supper. The Club won by default and the next encounter will be at the Pub. At the time of writing, preparations are well underway for the Family Day on Easter Sunday.

The special event for May is the Euchre Competition on Saturday 20th. The fire will be roaring and tables set up around it. So join in a cosy night of good food, skill, and fun. Test the new coffee machine which makes a very good brew, and perhaps accompany it with a glass of Port.

following month. The dance floor is uncovered on the first Saturday of each month so bring along your dancing shoes and favourite music.

A collection of old photos of the area continues to be developed. More photos are requested. They will be cared for well and returned promptly to the owners in the condition in which they were loaned to the Club. Borrowed photos will be scanned into the computer and available for a display in the Club foyer and for other uses. If you have any old photos you are prepared to loan the Club please let us know.

hank you to the community for its enthusiastic response to planning the 2007 Leafy Sea Dragon Festival. A steering group has been active for some months and thirty people came to the first public planning meeting on 22nd March. Another dozen people unable to attend

made contact to show they want to be involved.

Ideas and commitment were enthusiastically forthcoming.

The group will launch the detailed program by the summer holiday season and again the offerings will appeal to all ages and interests. While it remains

a festival focussing on arts and culture, it will also have a strong environmental theme as it celebrates the wonderful leafies which are our state marine emblem.

CLOWNING AROUND by Rox Rosey

e have all seen clowns sometime in our lives, either at circuses, theatres, busking or at parties, but their origins go back centuries in time.

One of the first clowns to perform was a pygmy clown performing as a jester in Pharaoh’s court sometime around 2500BC, records show that court jesters have performed in China since 1818BC. History reveals that most cultures have had clowns. Cortez, when he conquered the Aztec nation in 1520 AD, found that Montezuma’s court had jesters similar to those in Europe. When Cortez returned, he brought with him Aztec fools, dwarf clowns, and hunchback buffoons as a gift to Pope Clement V11 of Spain.

Clowns who performed as court jesters, were allowed freedom of speech more so than the commoner, often speaking out against their ruler. In one such instance, when thousands of workers were killed during the construction of the Great Wall of China in 300BC, the then Chinese Emperor Shih Huang planned for the wall to be painted, meaning deaths of thousands more workers.

His jester Yu Sze, privileged enough to criticise, finally convinced his Emperor to scrap this plan of painting the Great Wall.

To this day, Yu Sze is regarded as a national hero in China.

In Shakespeare’s time, during Queen Elizabeth’s reign, clowns were known as an art form. Two of the 26 principal players in his productions were clowns.

However, The Bard criticised the clowns adlibbing as scripts were only written down after they had proved to be popular, he preferred clowns to follow an already prepared script.

What is considered as the first circus was created in England in around 1768 with a circus clown act called Billy Buttons.

Now the man called the Father of Modern Clowning was a bloke named Joseph Grimaldi, a theatrical clown who eventually replaced the Harlequin by what was known

as a ‘whiteface clown’, Grimaldi also portrayed a ‘blackface’ clown.

His acts usually involved cartoon type action sequences with chase scenes and comic violence, similar to what we are used to in the modern clown performances.

The scenes we usually associate clowns with is continually falling over, bumble footed, or trying to get as many as possible inside a toy car, these type of clowns are usually based on what is called “Auguste clowns, Auguste being the German word for ‘fool’ although it is thought that this name did not originate in that country, but instead copied from red haired clowns in Russia.

There has existed a rumour for years there is a ‘clown’ register, a clown face register where their faces are painted onto eggs, creating something similar to a patent so enabling them to have exclusive rights to their particular clown face.

Although not an official legal register, it is meant to preserve the individuality of each clown’s face makeup. The Department of Clown Registry information sheet states “It is an unwritten law among clowns that one must never copy the face of another”.

To include a little bit of clown jocularity (this is not mine by the way) “A clown doesn’t have egg on his face, but rather his face on an egg”.

In 1946 in the UK the tradition began at what was the International Circus Clowns club, but is now called Clowns International.

A club member Stan Bult started recording clown images on chicken eggs with the insides blown out, although started as a hobby, this collection grew and grew, being kept at Stan’s home, occasionally being loaned out for exhibitions and shows etc.

After Stan’s death the collection was still being lent out until accidentally, the collection was destroyed in about 1965.

However, another club member Clown Bluey after being appointed chairman of Clowns International in 1984, took up Stan Bult’s practice of recording clowns faces on eggs. This time though, a professional artist was hired to paint faces on china-pot eggs instead of chicken eggs. Happily, over the years many of the lost eggs have been reproduced with new eggs being added.

The current UK egg artist is Kate Stone and the collection is now housed in All Saints Centre, London.

Just a bit of interest, Kate adds samples of the clown’s costume and wig-hair to produce – wait for it – ‘eggs-act’ match.

Sorry about that, I could have included more.

On the other side of the world, back about 20 years ago, the egg tradition made its way there, and a clown from Ringling Brothers

and Bailey circus and his wife started their own registry after visiting and discussing with their UK counterparts.

Apart from painting on goose eggs ( longer lasting than chicken) and using more various materials such as flowers, felt, and clay etc, their collection is very similar to that in the UK, numbering over 600 eggs, they come from all around the world and Linda McBryde is the artist and co-creator of this US registry.

This collection was eventually housed in the International Clown all of Fame Hall of Fame in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. Interestingly, since 1987 there have been over 50 inductions of professional clowns, including such famous names as Red Skelton, Charlie Chaplin, the Little Tramp and. “Buttons” McBryde, who founded the US clown registry.

The ICHOF , a non-profit organisation is involved with projects other than the museum. It sponsors visits by professional clowns to children’s hospitals as well as programmes for troubled teens, instructing them how to make balloon animals and dress as clowns to entertain the elderly.

Clowns don’t have to speak, their visual antics say it all, from a crowd of clowns disengaging themselves from a tiny car to running in circles and falling over. There is no age, language or cultural barriers to enjoying a clown’s performance.

The question arose, “what is the difference between a clown and a comedian?”

Red Skelton put it in very apt terms, ‘a comedian makes fun of the audience, but a clown makes fun of himself’ How true? I can associate with that as I am sure we all have a bit of the clown in us sometime, somewhere.

Yaccaroo Shiraz launched at Lady Bay

avin & Julianne Schubert officially launched their first vintage, the 2004 Yaccaroo Shiraz, at a function on 16th April.

Held at the Links Lady Bay Hotel, the launch was well attended by both local and visiting wine connoisseurs and those who just like ‘a good drop of red’.

The 2004 Shiraz is the first wine produced at Yaccaroo and was sourced from approximately 4 ton of fruit harvested by

hand on the property on April 8th 2004. It was basket pressed to open fermenters then put in American oak barrels for 18 months by winemaker, Justin Lane of Redheads Studio, McLaren Vale. The wine was bottled in November 2005 and released in April 2006.

Gavin and Julianne were very pleased with the launch and the response to the wine by those attending.

YANKALILLA CHILDRENS COMMUNITY CENTRE

W

e are at the end of term 1 already. The kindy and care have had an extremely busy term with excursions and visits. As part of the ARTsmart program the children were able to have a puppet show come to the kindy. Goldilocks was a success with the children intrigued with the puppets. The children visited Ingallala Falls and the ruins, which proved very popular. The children were very excited to have the local CFS come and give a demonstration with sirens and hoses. A visit to Port Elliot kindergarten and kindergym during the last week of term was a big hit with the children. Our kindy said goodbye to 7 children who graduated into school starting in term 2.They are Jack, Jasmin, Connor, Lucy, Samara and Damon. We wish them well in their new schools.

O

ur branch meets each month in the St James church hall at Delamere on the 1st Thursday of the month at 9.30 a.m., unless we are going out somewhere for the day. There are 12 members in our branch, 2 down on last year, due to members moving. 2 prospective members have been coming to our last couple of meetings, so we hope to get up to 14 again. A good number for the area and present day memberships. Since the current year started in August 2005, to date we have had, as a speaker Beryl Woodal, who had been with a blind, green bowling group to an International match. We have also had Joyce Aspinall, who spoke to us about Queen Mary's dolls house, which is in Windsor Castle. Joyce brought along a video recording showing the dolls house. It is incredible, in 12th scale 1" to 1 foot everything in the house works, from the plumbing to the record player to the lawn mower. Emanda Fretwell came and showed us how to paint lovely patterns on wooden boxes. Members could either buy these boxes or they will be used in hospitals, given to families who have lost a baby or small child to put keepsakes in.

We were surprised to find out how many, in fact 100's are used each year and they are not yet covering all the hospitals. We have been out to the Encounter Centre where wooden toys are made, to the Victor Harbor Whale Centre, and are planning a trip in May to the Buddhist Temple At Sellicks Beach, which we are all looking forward too. It will be nice to see a different culture first hand. Our monthly meetings include points for bloom of the month and attendance, and a small prize given each year to the highest point achievers. We have a member with a large property and each year in June we go and plant trees there. We try to go to the Cundell group functions and enter table days etc. And we have craft most

PowerFM Southern Charity Challenge

S

aturday 8th April saw a turnout of 170 joggers and walkers who took part in the PowerFM Southern Charity Challenge. The competitors pushed themselves to the edge of endurance in the name of charity.

This event is expected to raise over $14,000 for a specific community empowerment project overseen by Oxfam Australia.

There was approximately $5,500 collected on the day making the target amount achievable. Teams traveled from all parts of SA to participate and enjoy the spirit of this charity event.

Normanville’s own Jean Sinkinson took part in the half marathon; masters category, with a distance of 21.1km’s and Jean completed the course in a time of 2hr 37m 14s. Jean can be seen

training on the roads throughout our district as well as being an active patrolling member of the Pt Elliot Surf Life Saving Club.

Since starting umpiring softball in 1981, Bruce has officiated in almost 2000 games at Local, State, National and International level. The Seacombe Tigers have recognised his commitment to the Club, as an

umpire, with Life Membership.

At National Level, Bruce umpired at Australian Championships for 10 years between 1990 and 2000, covering both Women’s and Men’s competitions. From 1994 to 1997 he was a member of the Softball Australia Elite Umpire Squad.

Softball in schools for both girls and boys has been a passion.

Bruce has convened and umpired South Australian Secondar y School Sport Knockout Championships for

25 years and he has been Tournament Chief Umpire in four School Sport Australia Australian Softball Championships.

In South Australia, Bruce officiates in the Adelaide Competition. For many years he was responsible for training and

examining umpires State-wide and rostering umpires for the Adelaide Competition and for State Junior and Senior Championships.

What of the future? “To continue umpiring as long as I keep enjoying it”.

MASTERS GLORY FOR MARILYN

A

thletics: age is no barrier for Marilyn MacFeate as she had discovered the fountain of youth with her exuberant personality and drive to improve her running. On the back of her success at the Australian Masters Games in

October, Marilyn has just returned from Port Pirie where she competed at the State Masters. On April 7 & 8 the inspirational 60 year old won three silver medals in the 100, 200 metre sprints and the 1,500 race walk in the 60 – 64 age category. “I am very happy as I just love competing and running” an excited Marilyn said. The secret to her fitness is the training she undertakes at Inman Valley where husband Ben has cut a 300 metre strip on the property and the intensive workout she gets at Encounter Fitness. “They are fantastic, with Erica Jacobs running a good fitness centre, which has improved my strength and stamina.” Marilyn said. Being 60 years young, Marilyn also entered the bike leg of the Victor Triathalon and represented Encounter Fitness in the Relay for Life at Victor Harbor oval, where her team not surprisingly ran 420 laps.

Emu on the loose!

ome great Police work by Paul Shepherd during the month arrested a major crisis in town when an emu escaped from its Wirrina enclosure and ended up in Normanville. Luckily Bob Magor was on hand to report the incident.

THE EMU BLUE

In the townships leafy suburbs when there's criminals at large People need to have their law enforcement officers in charge.

So in little towns like Normanville the residents feel blest With a fearless local copper quickly curbing all unrest.

And Paul Shepherd is this hero who has felons on the run.

Zero tolerance his motto with his baton and his gun.

But a recent case sure stirred up his constabulary juice When policing skills were tested by an emu on the loose.

For his paperwork was scattered and his morning went to pot As some locals crammed his office and his phone was running hot.

In the backstreets of the township a catastrophe had struck.

And the Law was quickly needed as an emu ran amok.

So Paul Shepherd to the rescue pulled his hat down on his head.

While the Channel Seven chopper hovered filming overhead.

And Paul tracked the emus' progress, (it was not that hard to find), For the emu was excited and left quite a trail behind.

Like a bloodhound he pursued it, (he was nimble on his feet), Through the maze of shrubs and bushes growing densely up the street.

Until face to beak they squared up in a lonely cul-de-sac, Where the emu eyed him fiercely and Paul bravely stared him back.

Now a lesser cop than Shepherd may have buckled at this stage, All alone, devoid of back-up, with an emu in a rage.

But he'd soon have feathers flying, (metaphorically of course) For he'd been a chicken plucker in his life before the force.

He was ready now to rumble as he read the bird its rights.

A black belt from Colonel Saunders came in handy in foul fights.

For he'd done a course on poultry so if conflict came to blows This big bird would cop a flogging from its beak to parsons' nose.

So he made a flying tackle and the emu hit the deck, With its beady eyes now bulging with Paul's hands around its neck.

And a band of scared spectators couldn't fathom what they saw With the emu locked in combat with the long arm of the law.

But they all enjoyed the contest for admission price was free.

It was ringside at the wrestling but without a referee.

And Paul's mouth was full of feathers, (it was quite a nasty fight).

Both were biting in the clinches which was not a pretty sight.

As they kicked and gouged and battled 'twas a law enforcement test 'Cause this feral fowl on steroids was resisting the arrest.

And Steve Irwin mumbled 'Crikey', at this unarmed combat spree As he viewed the news-flash photos being aired across TV. There were lethal flaying drumsticks with the copper cramped for space, For this outsized feather duster was now sitting on his face.

At close range he now discovered where an emu lays its eggs As he reached and snapped his handcuffs round the felons' scaly legs.

And that's how the fracas ended with the bird to banishment.

It was in the paddy wagon and off to the slammer went.

But the cop was torn and tattered and the emu made him reek When through fright its gut recycled all its tucker from the week.

It was in the line of duty so he didn't whinge or gripe.

And he sought no recognition for he's quite the modest type.

But Paul Hogan sure was upset with this copper by the sea When he heard this local legend wears the name 'Emu Dundee'.

I

n January 05 my wife and I thought we would step into the 21st century and purchase a “High Definition” wide screen TV with all the bells and whistles. After having the set delivered I sat down with great anticipation of setting it up so as to receive the state of the art reception (DVD quality), much to my dismay I couldn’t for the life of me get HD TV from the state of the art UHF transmitter that we all (ratepayers) forked out for a few years ago. Quite annoyed by this dilemma I confronted the council office asking why I could not receive digital TV and was told very bluntly by the woman who served me on entering the office “that there was no intention by council to install digital reception within their council area and they don’t have to, it would also be up to us, the consumer, to gain this reception once the analogue service is terminated” I thought thankyou very much and went on my way, after returning the HD box for credit I pursued another angle of attack. With the television reception below par especially on nine and some instances on seven & ten (pixilation and noise distortion), I contacted the manufacturers of my TV, in this instance Samsung, to see if there was anything wrong with this new set, after coming to my house to peruse the

situation and putting all these fandangle electronic devices on it to measure reception input and TV output, I was told that my antennae could be the problem as the receiver was perfect. A recommendation that we employ the services of an antennae technician to rectify the problem was put to us; enter Wayne Hahn of Hindmarsh Valley. Wayne attended and discovered that (to our surprise) there was nothing wrong with our antennae but the fault lay solely with the transponder that was on the tower we are aiming at, namely the one on the hill behind the Links Hotel.

This is when the back and forth started, both with council and with the tower managers. We corresponded quite frequently, more so with tower management than council, but council did tell me that they had asked for submissions from interested companies for the installation of broadband digital reception (I don’t know how far away this is).

Australian Satellite Services were very polite and diligent in their approach to fixing the problem with their changing the receiver and realigning this and that but twelve months plus down the track things have not changed with channel nine and I have been told (another surprise) that the problem is with my TV!!, merry go round? We are seriously considering reverting to VHF for peace of mind.

have followed with interest and I guess some amusement at the stories coming in to the Yankalilla Regional News regarding local television reception over the last couple of issue’s. I now feel that I have to put my two cents worth in.. Feel lucky you get any TV reception full stop. We are a mere 9km’s from both Normanville and Yankalilla and as the crow flies maybe 4 or 5 km’s from both towns. We have NO viewable television reception at all, in fact rather than stare at blank walls all

opinions relatin g to the Yankalilla Council's approval of a transportable home that had been relocated onto a block in Main Road Yankalilla. During my last two visits since then, I have watched with interest, the renovations and improvements on that property. I have also have noted that there has been no letters received or published, to commend or congratulate the owners on a job well done. The house is now one of the more attractive homes in the area and obviously the Council was aware of the plans for that property prior to giving approval to the owner. At the ripe old age of 88 years my advice would be before putting pen to paper, perhaps a short phone call or visit to the council to get information on the plans, would have informed those who found the time to write but not the time to gain the appropriate information. Well done Yankalilla Council and well done to the Owner. esterday I read the letter from Graeme Sculley, on p17 of April 2006 Yankalilla Regional News, regarding the resting place of ex HMAS Hobart.

I have a copy of the 24 page booklet entitled HMAS Hobart published Oct 2002, which I picked up at the Yankalilla Information Centre, in which the full story of the ship is written It explains that the anchor at the memorial site points out to where she lies - 4.5 nautical miles W-NW of Marina, St Vincent Cove off the coast from Paradise Wirrina Cove in Yankalilla Bay The map on the back gives her position as 35 degrees 28' 09" S - 138 degrees 9' 05" E There is also a website www.diveexhmashobart.com which gives extensive details of the ship and a video of the scuttling on 5 Nov 2002 If someone from Council has not replied, perhaps this will be of benefit to Graeme.

he first game of the 2006 season was played at Strathalbyn. The A grade match was a replay of last years grand final. Yankalilla had only two girls playing that took the court in last years grand final, in Fiona Wuttke and Claire Ellis. Natasha O’Leary and Kylie Cook who have both had little A grade experience played very well.

Congratulations to Asha Brazier, Carrie Pittaway and Kimberley James who all played their first A Grade game for Yankalilla.

t was most encouraging to welcome several new members to the April session when Wendy Jennings gave an excellent demonstration of her approach to drawing and painting animals and birds. Her medium being acrylics used like water colours, resulting in finely detailed pictures.

I am very pleased that Roe Gartleman ( mixed media) has accepted our invitation to be our May tutor, it should prove to be a very interesting session.

Congratulations to all those involved in the Easter Art Show. It has proved, once again, to have been a successful and diverse exhibition with a high number of entries.

he Fleurieu Peninsula Art Trail is proving to be a great success, why not pick up your copy from the Tourist Office or gallery 88. Many visitors to our gallery recently have discovered us through the Art Trail Brochure, which is very encouraging. The Art web-site is now on line, so gallery 88 information can be accessed worldwide. I will forward more information on the Trails’ progress as it comes to hand.

May I remind gallery members that the AGM will be held in June 2006 and all relevant details will be put on the gallery notice board.

There are a number of exhibitions coming up later on this year including the Fleurieu Peninsula Biennale. This is an opportunity for artists, galleries and community groups to register their own event, exhibition, etc. as part of the overall Biennale Program and will take place from the 3rd to the 26th of November. LOCALS SUPPORT MAGAZINE OF NEW WRITING

I

n blistering January heat locals and visitors from Adelaide and across the Fleurieu congregated at Trafford Hill Winery to support the regional launch of Wet Ink, a magazine of new creative writing. True book lover and reader, Greg Mackie did the honours. Besides currently being involved in building in the district, Greg is the CEO of Arts SA, owns a

bookshop and has been chair of Writers Week and the Festival of Ideas.

Responses to the magazine have been very positive with reviews acclaiming its quality and the need for this new venture on the literary scene.

During March the second issue was released at Writers Week in the Adelaide Festival.

One of its inaugural board members is Lorraine McLoughlin of Yankalilla who says. “Wet Ink is a response to lack of publishing avenues for quality new fiction and poetry in Australia. It provides opportunities for new writers and is attracting quality writing from around Australia.”

he Leafy Sea Dragon Festival Steering Group and the District Council of Yankalilla want to set up a “Leafy Sea Dragon Foundation” to raise public awareness and funds to preserve the habitat of the Leafy Sea Dragon in our area and one day to get the Leafy Sea Dragon off the “threatened species list”.

In March 2006 Council agreed to support the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival Steering Group in its aim to stage a biennial festival of arts, culture, community and environment in the Yankalilla area that contributes to the future health and viability

research and study, to raise awareness of, and celebrate, the Leafy Sea Dragon.

The Steering Group has already received enthusiastic responses from Dragon Search, the Marine Life Society of South Australia, the Wilderness Society and the Normanville Catchment Resource Centre about the setting up of the Foundation.

The Steering Group is now calling for Expressions of Interest from residents of Yankalilla and South Australia who are interested in assisting the Festival in the implementation of this aim.

They require volunteers and help in setting up the Foundation, developing promotional campaigns for raising funds, securing tax deductible donations, a membership drive, monitoring the Leafy Sea Dragon and its habitat, and launching the Foundation during the Festival in April 2007.

In order to raise greater understanding of the Leafy Sea Dragon and its habitat the Marine Life Society of SA have set up an information and DVD display of the Leafy Sea Dragon and its habitat at the Yankalilla Visitor Information Centre, 104 Main South Road, Yankalilla. It is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on weekends.

he Yankalilla Amateur Basketball summer season grand finals were held recently, with hard fought games being played in the Men's and Women's matches. In the Men's final, Centurions were victorious over the Demons 39 35 in a very exciting game. While in the Women's game, Supercats defeated the Sharks 37 - 20, with the scoreline not reflecting the

competitiveness of the contest.

The presentations were held at the Yankalilla Hotel, where the following individual trophy winners were also awarded their trophies.

countries around the world, the Yankalilla Club has competed in three major tournaments in the last six months.

Sam Edwards, one of the founding members, attended the National Titles in Perth earlier in 2005 and won a gold medal for Kata.

Bruce ‘Strop’ Arnold, head of the Yankalilla Club, attended the New Zealand Gasshuku (heavy duty training session) and competition where he won medals for Kata and Kumite.

The State Titles in SA were attended by most Yankalilla members and the club finished second in the overall medal count, not bad for a first time!

2006 commenced with a training camp at Darham Springs, near Second Valley from 27th to 29th January. This yearly event saw members from many SA clubs sweating it out on the grass in both rain and wind, with occasional sunny patches.

Many club members attended the Central Region Competition at Peterborough in February. This was the second major competition for Yankalilla and resulted in an outright win in the medal tally, with some members taking home up to three medals each.

A proposal to Amalgamate the local RSL sub Branch with the Because of dwindling membership, and because of the age of the average member of the RSL the foreseeable future looks dim for our branch. Add to this the rising cost of running and repairing our existing premises which is old and in need of constant work, which our small budget now is unable to meet, we are considering either closing the RSL in Yankalilla, or if possible try and amalgamate with the local sports club. In doing so create the Yankalilla Service and Sports Club.

This will of course require a vote of the members of both clubs to initiate such a move, but as both clubs represent a large portion of the interests of the whole community we believe that the members of the community also should be able to voice their opinion’s. It is with this in mind that a public meeting is to be held at the sport’s club rooms on the 22nd of May 2006 at 7.30 pm. Although these opinion’s will not have any say, members of the community may wish to gain such membership so as to make their vote count. It needs to be understood that your opinion’s Opinions could indeed have an influence membership or not, but to make this whole thing work membership to such a club would be a major issue.

Basic RSL responsibilities Using there finances from the sale of there property, be prepared to build and establish a meeting place, for official meetings. This may be an addition to the existing club premises or not. Have an area available to display its memorabilia, as may be available.

Club Responsibilities To assist in making this change of premises, so that it will be able to perform its required sporting responsibilities and that the shift goes smoothly and suitable to both parties.

How By the creation of a committee, with equal representation from both clubs, to handle all the issues that may arise.

SA. SEA RESCUE WIRRINA FLOTILLA

ell another month has come and gone and the weather is getting cooler, and the Wirrina Flotilla is still getting plenty of work. Since the last Yankalilla news we have had five call outs ourselves and two major call outs handled

by Sapol with their much larger craft "Investigator" One of these call outs was over twenty nautical miles south off Kangaroo Island in pretty adverse conditions to tow in a large yacht with a round trip of one hundred nautical miles.

When the police launch returned to Wirrina at around midnight with the stricken craft, the crew settled down for some shuteye before returning to Adelaide.

But this was not to be and just a f t e r 2 a m a n "epirb" (emergency position indicating radio beacon) was picked up by the Maritime search and Rescue Authority in Canberra. This signal was

plotted to be off Aldinga and as the Police boat was in the area it was called into the search immediately. The craft in trouble turned out to be a sailing cat, which was breaking up from the pounding it was getting from the heavy sea.

When the Police boat found the craft, one pontoon was breaking off and the mast was down. The crew of the "Investigator" did an excellent job in towing the craft back to Wirrina without it sinking. As I mentioned in the last Yank, News we had a large Multi agency exercise on the 19th of March, with thirteen boats involved including the Police launch "Investigator", eight boats from Victor Harbor, Goolwa, Four from Wirrina as well as SES from Yankalilla, SA Ambulance, local Police and Police from the South Coast region. The day went off pretty well and a lot was learned by all concerned. We were also

pleased the have thr ee representatives from the Coast Guard, Kangaroo Island with us.

Well done to all concerned. The day finished up with a de-brief and a barbecue cooked by some of our Adelaide Field Command chaps. After a few hours on the water it sure went down well.

On Friday the 31st of March I attended the farewell for Al Cormack the co-ordinator volunteer Marine Rescue with the Emergency services who is retiring after a very distinguished career with the Police and the Government.

Some of the locals will know Al and Allison as they have property in the district and from all reports will be spending a lot more time down in this neck of the woods. You never know we might even see Him on SR5. All the best for your retirement. In the last issue of the Yankalilla News we mentioned that we were looking for a person to

operate a radio base station from their home during week days etc. We are pleased to say that we have had several enquiries and these will be given serious consideration by our operational committee. It is not too late -if any one else would like to throw their hat into the ring and do a very worthwhile voluntary job. That seems to be all for this month.

Rapid Bay Jetty versus the Environment

s stated in the Advertiser 22nd April, there has been a series of meetings held to discuss the future of the Rapid Bay Jetty. Whilst the government pledged to fund the rebuilding of the jetty they are now proceeding with caution due to environmental concerns.

Mr Conlon states “The Government understands from environmental investigations we have undertaken that we need to be careful we don’t just look at

engineering solutions, “We need to ensure that the work we undertake does not destroy the environment that attracts the diving and fishing communities to the area.” “We are committed to coming up with the best, most feasible solution that will meet the needs of all parties.”

The Rapid Bay Jetty has been a wonderful recreational fishing spot for families over many generations as well as a magical diving experience to view the

Leafy Sea Dragon. Both of these activities are no longer fully enjoyed whilst this matter is being discussed from various departments of government.

Whilst it is stated that the jetty environment is to be protected because it attracts fishers and divers, they can’t actually do anything once attracted to the j e t t y a s i t i s c l o s ed .

PART THE SECOND The solemn grave tones of the Oratorio in the early portion of the Second Part, suggest the tremendous burden carried by the Lord, as he was misunderstood by friend and foe alike. The drama of the music becomes intense, as it suddenly changes to portray the derision and scorn that people heaped upon him nearly 2000 years ago as they rejected his claim to be the Messiah. “All they that see him shall laugh him to scorn,” sings the soloist. and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 mocking words of unbelieving Jews as he hung upon the cross: “He trusted in God that he should deliver him; let him deliver him, if He delight in him.” Even the disciples deserted the Lord at this time: “He looked for some to take pity on him, but there was no man, neither found he any to comfort him.” Bearing then a tremendous load of sorrow, sufficient to break his heart, “he was cut off out of the land of the living.” He died upon the tortuous Roman cross.

But there is a note of joy in the music, as the words from Acts 2 are sung, proclaiming the fact that God brought Jesus again from the grave. He triumphed, not only over the Jews and Gentiles who cruelly crucified him, but over the power of death itself. And this triumph makes possible the fulfilment of all the prophecies that tell of his ultimate glory. Thus the Oratorio bursts into the glorious chorus: “Lift up your heads, and the King of Glory shall come in.” The risen Christ became the symbol of hope to his disciples, for what he is today all they can become at his return (1 John 3:2). It became the basis of the gospel of peace which the disciples carried into the entire world as sections 3739 of the Oratorio portray. That gospel message is still proclaimed today, telling the good news of Christ’s second coming and the hope of eternal life in him. For as Christ triumphed, so also can others.

By accepting his message and passing through the waters of baptism, they can obtain forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38), and the hope of eternal life at his coming (2 Timothy 4:8).

That is the grand message of “The Messiah”, without which all the glorious music and delightful singing is but a hollow mockery. Apart from the message, the music can only tickle our ears, but the meaning of the words can set us on the road to life eternal, it can provide a peace of mind that “passeth the understanding of man.” (Philippians 4:7) In this regard, we earnestly recommend the words of the Psalmist: “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” (Psalm 34:8) for, in the words of the Paul: “He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20) Next month we will examine further the selections of scripture selected by George Frederick Handel in his musical Oratorio “The Messiah”. This will take us into an examination of the scriptures that tell us of the second coming of Jesus Christ and the burden of his power felt by the nations of the world.

he next thing we prayed for was the bleeding in his gut.

A scan a few weeks later revealed that this was gone. Our specialist who was a pronounced atheist was dumbstruck. He admitted that this was not possible and suggested that we continue what we had been doing as it seemed to be working.

As word spread about our little boy, the brothers and sisters in Adelaide and also in other assemblies began to pray and fast for some more miracles to be seen. We found compassion and support in the most unexpected places and knew whatever the outcome, good or bad, the Lord had us wrapped firmly in his arms and had surrounded us with people I am sure had prayed and see miracles happen in their own lives. After growing up in an assembly our whole lives, we finally realised what it was all about and how much love existed. It made us want to be a better brother and sister to others.

An MRI scan confirmed Kelani did not have a spleen, something we had been praying so hard not to be so and we found ourselves so disappointed. This had meant his chances of a recovery would be far less. However, we continued to pray and stay positive. Stranger things had happened!

We were told Kelani would be born blue and we would not get any time with him once born. We would need to have him flown to Melbourne for heart surgery within the first few days of his life.

At thirty five weeks, I went into premature labour and upon prayer, it stopped. A scan confirmed that he was only 1.2 kg and would be very weak. The Lord knew he was best kept inside. When our little boy finally arrived, he was a plump pink thing and in those three weeks had more than doubled in weight to be 3.4 kg (7 pound 8 ounces) at birth.

There was no hint of blue and the specialist looked confused. He was taken away for tests only to find that his intestines were no longer malrotated and he had a spleen with perfect function.

find a blank area where the spleen now was! He was also free of both Down Syndrome and the other chromosomal abnormality His heart problem was the only thing unchanged. On day three of life, Kelani was flown to Melbourne and we followed him on a separate flight. Surgery was intended for that day but due to no beds being available in intensive care, all surgery was cancelled. We were told every day that he would have surgery and we would wait by his bed every minute in case they came for him. On the fifth day that this happened, they came in and said there was no chance for surgery today and we decided it was time for prayer in numbers so we sent out a message to pray. Within minutes, the surgeon took him in.

The risks were large and chances small but we knew that the Lord would carry him through the rest.

He was expected to be in intensive care for at least a week after surgery if everything went well, and in high dependency for at least three weeks following that before we could return to Adelaide. Then he would need to stay in hospital for several weeks or until he could feed properly and was consistently gaining weight. With his condition, they expected him to be fed via tube for at least the first few months until he gained strength and that his weight gain would be slow and difficult while his body fought to recover.

When we first saw Kelani after surgery, it was a bit of a shock.

He was in an induced coma, his face was swollen with two black eyes, there were tubes and drips everywhere and he was on a respirator. For the first time, Paul felt it was beginning to overwhelm him. We went back to our room and began to pray.

Within thirty two hours after surgery, Kelani was out of intensive care and back in high dependency. This was the quickest ever that a baby had been released from intensive care after this procedure by five days!

Within a week we were out of high dependency and the following week back to Adelaide where he stayed in hospital one night. He was released under the

unusual circumstance that he was feeding perfectly and showing consistent weight gain. This was something they assured us would never happen.

Our little boy continued to surprise surgeons and specialists everywhere. In fact, he has continued to surprise us. The journey we have taken although unfavourable has taught us so much about who we are, the way we walk and the wonderful assembly we are a part of.

We want to thank all the saints for their prayers and support. It has meant more than you will ever know. Kelani does need more surgery at a later stage in life but we continue to pray for more miracles and know without a doubt, the Lord is watching over us and will provide. Amen.

The course ‘A Practical Guide to Rural Land Management’ addresses these issues and more over 6 weeks. Participants have the opportunity to ask presenters about soil, water and dam management, weed identification and control and pasture management. The next course on the Fleurieu Peninsula will be held at Normanville starting on Wednesday May 10th at 7.30pm.

Greg Mitchell, a pasture specialist, and Rod Dowie, who will speak about revegetation, will be two key presenters during the course that can assist landowners to manage and improve their pastures and to understand the principals behind establishing shelterbelts and revegetation on a property.

To complete the course, participants are introduced to the process of developing a property plan and have the opportunity to do a farm walk where the practical applications can be demonstrated.

Travelling with a Terrorist

I

t was my first day in Jerusalem. I had travelled by bus from Amman to the Allenby Bridge where we disembarked and walked under the watchful eyes of Israeli soldiers stationed behind machine guns.

The next step was getting through the tight security. One could hardly imagine the questions that would be asked. Ahead were a group of aged nuns in their black garbs and the way these folk were interrogated you would have thought that they were terror suspects.

However, I got through and joined several others in hiring an eight seater taxi to Jerusalem. As we travelled I gazed at the rugged hills and eagerly anticipated my arrival at the ancient city of fame.

What was I going to do when I got there? I had made no plans except to book accommodation at Christ Church - an Anglican centre inside the walled part of Jerusalem. I carried my heavy cases for quite a distance and then checked in.

I inquired about excursions but, to my disappointment, none were operating. My heart sank - I had come to Jerusalem with high hopes of visiting some of the very special historical sites. I spent the remaining hours of the day walking the narrow streets of the ‘old’ city and then went to the dining hall for the evening meal.

I sat down at a table and a man in a blue T shirt and dark glasses approached. He said in drawling American accent, ‘Hi, my name is Tom – what’s yours?’ ‘I’m John,’ I said. ‘Hi John,’ said Tom, ‘Do you mind if I join you?’

‘Sure,’ I said, very keen to have company.

We talked for awhile and then Tom said.

‘John, I’m arranging a guided tour around the old city for tomorrow. Would you like to come? Tom didn’t have to wait for my reply.

This was almost too good to be true.

Next day our guide – a Russian Jew - led us to the Mount of Olives , the Wailing Wall, Hezekiah’s tunnel and the steps to where the Jewish temple of Jesus’ day had been – a wonderful experience!

That evening Tom and I met again for tea. He said, ‘John, I’m planning a visit to Masada tomorrow. Would you like to join us? You’ll need to be up about 3:00 a.m. so that we can climb the summit before sunrise to beat the heat.’ I said, ‘I’ll be there Tom,’

t is the Easter weekend and I am sitting here like a newspaper columnist wondering what to write. By the time you read this, Easter will have come and gone and I hope all of those who rely on the trade have done well.

I recently read another article that one of our politicians was going to work to reduce red tape to small business. It is quite an interesting topic. The Australian Government has just had a round of grant funding to local government to assist them to reduce red tape. South Australia did quite well by applying in different consortiums. n the 15th March, the inaugural meeting of the Red Hat Leafy Sea Dragons was held on Wednesday, 12th April, the first purple gear and red hats from this new Yankalilla branch will set out on their first adventure. The Red Hat Society was started after a poem, by Jenny Joseph published called “warning” which starts like this: “When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me……” From that innocuous beginning has come an organization of over a million women all over the world ready to take up the concept of growing old disgracefully, determined to have fun and not fit the image of what other people expect of ‘a certain

age’. A programme of events is set out for members who, if they are 50 or over can gear up in purple and red or those under 50 who can still join but wear pink. This group, based in Yankalilla, expects to do something out of the ordinary - for us - about once a month. Over a million women all over the world have taken up the concept of growing old disgracefully, determined to have fun and not fit the image of what other people expect of 'a certain age'. So it's on with the purple togs and red hat if you join and are over 50. If you are under 50, you can still join but must wear pink or violet until you are a big girl. The Red Hat Leafy Sea Dragons was founded on the 15th March and launched itself into its first outing on the 12th April by going to Greenhills at Victor Harbor. We lost a couple of members early in the piece in the maze and if they were issuing whimpering cries of distress we took no notice but busied ourselves taking our shoes off for the bouncy thing. They later retaliated by leaping about like fawns on the thing and showing off terribly while we of the more lumbering variety wobbled about like jellies.

It took one of that ilk to have us in an unseemly heap quite unable to get up either from laughing or avoirdupois. I'll have you know that we have in our midst an archer of quite extraordinary talent who shamed everyone, and I mean everyone, by winging most other arrows into the circles. We played volleyball - pretty badly - and attracted the attention of a group of Americans who thought we were so cool they insisted on having a photo of us with them to take home to an admiring U.S.A. One of our number made contact with the sand rather prematurely off the flying fox and another's sea legs

wobbled her off them after the old knees had been going hell for leather on a pedallo on the pond but no damage done to either except the former was vexed that, having put on such a spectacular display, the camera was pointing in another direction. The putt-putt had us in competitive mode and when one of us took 14 putts to get the ball into the hole 3 metres away, you should have heard the language! At lunch we all thought each other's sandwiches looked better than our own and sampled them to make sure and, of course, we were into the cake and bitsas with the healthy appetites of the physically challenged. Nothing wrong with our stomachs!

Greenhills did us proud throughout even bringing out the little trailer specifically to take us around the site at the end of the day. We don't have meetings, it costs $10 a year to join, you come or you don't come to events just as you choose and there is only one rule – you must wear purple with a red hat.

So our next sortie is overland to Adelaide on Friday, 5th May, where we will do interesting things during the day and finish with a creepy Ghost Walk at the Old Adelaide Gaol and the next one is on Saturday, 3rd June, our Frightfully British Day when we end the day at the Proms. he residents at Yankalilla Centre have been offered more lifestyle options thanks to the generosity of our local community and broader networks.

A need was established in our centre for DVD players to be installed, as many of our residents wanted to watch new release movies. A request was sent to our volunteer group ‘Friends Of Yankalilla Centre’ (FOYC) to see what they could do to satisfy this requirement. After meeting to discuss ideas, FOYC sent a letter out to a number of local business’ explaining our plight and asking them to donate a DVD player for our residents. We were delighted with the response, and as a result were presented with 4 DVD players – 1 for each wing of the Centre.

Last month I put out a request for donations to the shed. This request was not ignored by the benevolent people of this area. ell, this is a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped with Red Cross Calling, especially members of the Lions Club who always find time to help us out in March.

THANK YOU to everyone who supported the Lamington Drive. Hope you enjoyed them – no guilty conscience! THANK YOU to those who came to the Body Workshop and supported Red Cross and thanks to Val Gubbin who organised it on behalf of the Senior Citizens. $66 was raised and we all came away with beautiful hands! THANK YOU to those who went to help at Corporate Roses Red Cross days where a percentage of Roses sold goes to Red Cross. We couldn’t do it without you. THANK YOU. Our next meeting is on May 1st at 1.30pm at RSL Hall. Please keep Thursday May 11th free as were hosting the Zone Conference this year.

SOUTHERN FLEURIEU CANCER SUPPORT & RESOURCE GROUP INC

n Saturday 25th March, the Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group provided afternoon teas at the “60 Years On” concert, organised by the Onkaparinga City Choral Society at the Victor Harbor Town Hall. In spite of temperatures reaching the high 30’s, the concert was well attended and everyone enjoyed the variety of excellent nostalgic items including choral singing by both senior and junior singers, all types of dancing included tap, ballet and the Charleston by the Instep School of Dance, and a wonderful narration by Robert Kimber. Guest artists Dione Palmer, Alex Bond and Annette Greenshields were a popular addition to the concert, and no one could fail to appreciate nine-year-old Anita Schneider who sang the Shirley Temple numbers “Animal Crackers in My Soup” and “On the Good Ship Lolly Pop”. The

concert was so popular that the Onkaparinga City Choral Society has booked the Town Hall again for 21st October when they will produce music from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Watch this space.

The Southern Fleurieu Cancer Support Group has produced laminated notices about their work and these will be appearing shortly on Notice Boards in Medical Centre and other places. Also, business cards with helpful ‘phone numbers’ will be placed in doctors surgeries throughout the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula.

This is an attempt to inform people about the existence of the group, and to help Cancer patients wherever possible with emotional and practical support.

M

any people have gallstones and don’t even know it. Are you at risk and what are gallstones? Gallstones, or biliary calculus, is a concretion in the gall bladder or a bile duct, composed chiefly of cholesterol crystals and occasionally mixed with calcium. They can vary from the size of a pinhead to that of a hen’s egg. Their presence is usually unrecognised until they begin to pass through the bile duct.

They may be without symptoms or may cause intense abdominal pain with irregular pain free intervals of days or even months.

A definitive diagnosis is made using diagnostic ultrasound, and the patient may experience bloating, gas, nausea and discomfort after a heavy meal of rich, fatty foods.

In the USA, studies have previously shown that gallstones exist in about twenty percent of women and eight percent of men over the age of forty. Gallstones can be made of pure cholesterol, pigment, a mix, or composed entirely of minerals.

Risk factors for the development of cholesterol and mixed gallstones include diet, sex, race, obesity, certain drugs, various gastrointestinal diseases and age.

Primary treatment, therefore, involves reducing those risk factors listed above, involved in developing gallstones. Once gallstones have formed, it is important to avoid aggravating foods and to employ measures which increase the solubility of cholesterol in bile. It is important to

increase dietary fibre, eliminate food allergies and reduce intake of animal protein. A vegetarian diet has been shown to be protective against gallstone formation.

PREVENTION IS EASIER to obtain than reversal.

Following their formation, gallstones may grow slowly in size and number and may cause minimal to complete obstruction to the flow of bile. If you have gallstones you may experience symptoms such as severe pain in the stomach and right side, a slow and weak pulse, tense abdominal muscles, sweatiness, nausea and vomiting. If you have these symptoms you should see your doctor immediately.

TREATMENT: Conventional medicine has some great diagnostic tools to confirm gallstones and also for treatment. However, the key is not to need them! The following is especially important if you have had or suspect you have gallstones. Foods to be avoided include meat, egg, pork, onion, milk, foods rich in starch, sweets, sugar, tea, coffee, chocolate and fried, fatty foods.

A Liver and Gut detoxification is essential.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are most beneficial, especially cherry, peach, apricot, beet, spinach and raw carrots. Supporting the liver is crucial, so herbs such as Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), artichoke leaves and Turmeric are indicated. Increase intake of dietary fibre such as flax seed, oat bran, guar gum and pectin. Also it is extremely important to drink at least 8 glasses of WATER daily. sometimes the eyes sink into the face, the eyelids retract and the third eyelid comes across the eye.

The muscles of the forehead may contract and to look like a worried frown. The ears may be pricked up and the corners of the lips drawn back into a macabre grin. Animals will have their jaws clamped shut (lockjaw) and go into spasms if they are touched or subjected to noises. The toxin eventually causes the paralysis of the muscles of the chest and larynx. The animal may choke or asphyxiate. Risk factors for tetanus are leaving wounds unattended e.g. punctures from animal bites or tears from wire fences. Outdoor animals have a greater opportunity for acquiring wounds – either through fighting or injury. Tetanus is diagnosed from the clinical signs and the presence of a wound or the history of a recent wound. There may also be a history of exposure to poultry, which are resistant. Treatment for tetanus depends on how advanced the disease is. Antitoxin helps to neutralise the tetanospasmin toxin, but will not stop the effect of toxin that has already bound to the nerves. Antibiotics are administered to kill the Clostridium bacteria and to treat the wound that caused the problem in the first place. The animal may need to be hospitalised with constant nursing care. Severe cases would need to have their airway maintained or may require sedation to stop the muscle spasms and convulsions.

Tetanus antitoxin kicks in within a few hours to give protection, and it provides up to 3 weeks of safety.

For long term immunity the tetanus toxoid vaccine is required. The immunity from the vaccine takes a week or more to develop and a series of vaccines is required initially. Vaccination against

tetanus is advised for animals in higher risk situations, such as dogs with a lot of contact with horses and poultry, and dogs which are frequently cutting themselves (some animals are accident prone!).

Prevention of the disease is assisted by keeping yards free of wire and glass that could cause skin injuries; getting wounds treated quickly to prevent infection with bacteria; keeping horses away from chicken yards and discouraging dogs from letting themselves into the poultry pen (generally to eat the eggs).

Janis and Sally continue to work hard in keeping all the different groups motivated and informed of future meetings, events and special occasions. This is in addition to their normal workload of helping 'Carers in crisis'.

Calling all 'Creaky Carers'.

Want to keep fit but do not know where to start? Join Inken (physiotherapist) and fellow Carers in a weekly session of fitness and fun. The group meet every Tuesday at the CWA Hall, Yankalilla from 11.00 to 12 noon. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, bring a towel and water to drink. An assessment of your fitness will occur during the first class.

Did you know that there is a small, but comprehensive library at the Centre? Most of the books have been donated and are on non-fiction carer issues. Carers can access the library (free of charge) by calling in and seeing one of the reception staff during business hours. If the topic you want/ need is not available then perhaps the local library may assist.

n Friday 7th April, the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club launched their new bi-monthly newsletter ‘Under the Boardwalk’.

“We are so happy and pleased that Sandra Lampard of Brock Harcourts Normanville has so generously given this publication her financial backing,” said Simon Simms, President of the club. “Sandra understands the vital work that we do here at Normanville, and as a local is very appreciative of the service we provide. Without Sandra’s involvement we may not have been able to produce for our members, such

an informative newsletter, and so we are very grateful for her support.”

Sandra’s involvement with the club is not only as sole sponsor of ‘Under the Boardwalk’, but also from an active members role, as later in the year she will utilise her ‘auctioning skills’ for a vital fundraiser for the club.

I found this a fabulous opportunity to support a local community service organisation. My husband and I live locally, and for some time owned and operated our own business in this district.
